The weekend in Trenton was filled with Christmas music with holiday programs held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In the top photo, kindergarten students share their rendition of “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” during the Rissler Elementary School program on Friday night. The Grand River Valley Choir and Orchestra, pictured above, presented their annual winter concert on Saturday afternoon. The Trenton R-9 Vocal Music Department, pictured at left, performed its annual Christmas Vesper service on Sunday afternoon. Large crowds attended all three events.

WRIGHT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Third Physician In 2021

New Doctors Coming In 2019 by Diane Lowrey R-T Editor New doctors and expanded health care services are some of the things the community will see in 2019 as Wright Memorial Hospital continues to serve the area. CEO Steve Schieber, who assumed those duties this past August, said three new doctors will be coming to the hospital in the future, including two who will join the staff next year. A third is scheduled to come to Trenton in 2021. “With the resignation of Dr. (Jennifer) Treece last summer, we have really targeted efforts to rebuild our physicians’ staff,” Schieber said. “We made it a goal to recruit three doctors to Wright Memorial - doctors who were well-trained and would work well in our system - and I am happy to say we have been able to do that in a pretty quick time frame.” Dr. Molly Harp, who is a native of Cameron and has practiced the past 10 years in Hamilton, will be coming to Trenton in February, while Dr. Khanna Smith, who is currently in practice with the University of Texas in Corpus Christi, plans to be in Trenton by later summer or early fall. Dr. Chris Odehnal, a native of Liberty, is currently in the Cox Residency Program in Springfield and will be arriving in Trenton in 2021. All three will be family practioners. “We are very excited to have all three of these doctors coming to Wright,”  Schieber said. “And the fact that they have ties to this area I think will be key in keeping them here for a long time.” Schieber said that he had been trying to recruit Dr. Harp to the Saint Luke’s System for some time and noted she was ac-

tually ready to go to Kansas City before coming to check out WMH. “She came here to visit and was impressed by what she saw and when she was ready to leave that afternoon, she wanted an employment contract,” he said. “She is very talented and will really enhance our staff.” Dr. Smith’s husband, Alex, is originally from Linneus and the two have always wanted to come back to this area to live. Dr. Smith did her initial training with the Saint Luke’s System, so Schieber said she was already familiar with Wright Memorial. “She’s a very dynamic individual and we will be lucky to have her on our staff,” he said. Dr. Odenhal’s connection to this area is a little different in that he is a landowner in the Brimson area along with other members of his family. “They like to hunt and have some property at Brimson, which is how he became familiar with this area,” Schieber said. “When he was contacted by Saint Luke’s, he learned about the situation at Wright and was definitely interested. We now have a contract in hand and I can say that he will be here in August 2021 when he finishes his family practice residency.” A fourth physician with local ties has also expressed an interest in Wright Memorial, however, no committment has been made by that individual, whom Schieber said has an interest in doing family practice in a clinical setting. “We are in the final stages of extending a contract to (this individual) and, hopefully, this will work out because (this individual) would be a tremendous

addition,” he said. Recruiting doctors has not been the only focus of the hospital, which has recently added new programs as well as expanded existing services in an effort to better serve the community. The newest program is “Senior Life Solutions,” which targets individuals age 65 and over who are struggling with issues as they enter their “golden years.” “This was a program we started as we began to see a need for these services in helping our elderly deal with the aging process,” she said. “We have really had a great response and, in fact, already have as many enrolled in the program as we thought it might take us a year to reach.” Wright Memorial has been designated See WMH, Page 4

As the final details are completed for this week’s High School Holiday Hoops, Director Steve Maxey acknowledged the many individuals and businesses who help to make the annual event a success. “Holiday Hoops is all about the hundreds of student athletes who experience playing basketball at the Ketcham Community Center on the NCMC campus, but many folks are responsible for assuring the event goes off without a hitch," he said. An event of this size could never be the success it has become without the commitment of many individuals, businesses and organizations. “Among the many groups are the businesses and organizations who assume sponsorship of a day at Hoops and staff the front desk as the official welcoming committee to the event. This number is larger this year than ever before," Maxey said, noting that 11 of the 13 days are sponsored by area volunteer groups. He went on to recognize the groups who will be sponsoring specific days, including Farmers Bank of Northern Missouri, Rhonda WatkinsShelter Insurance, Grundy Electric Cooperative and MidState Services, North Central Missouri College, the Princeton Rotary Club, Century 21 Smith and Associates, BarnesBaker Motors, the Trenton Rotary Club, Wesley United Methodist Church, Smithfield Foods of Princeton and the North Central Missouri College Foundation/College Alumni. “These are just a hand full of the important folks who contribute to the event, not to mention 115 individual team hosts, over 70 volunteers who are responsible for the official clock and score book, volunteers who assist with ticket sales and hospitality," Maxey said. "The Trenton community has always been special to step up and support such important events to the community, but the support has grown over 14 years to include individuals from over 20 area communities.” Area agents of American Family Insurance will again be sponsoring the “Shoot Sixty Seconds for Your School” during this year’s Holiday Hoops. The event will be held during halftime of each game, with individuals pre-selected by the participating teams. The will shoot free throws for 60 seconds in pursuit of cash prizes for their high school athletic departments, with the winner earning a $500 cash prize while the second-place finisher will receive $250 for See Hoops, Page 4
