uring a game early in the 2016-2017 season, Trenton High School Head girls basketball Coach Brian Upton sent a group of five then-sophomores out onto the court. With a lead late, Trenton’s talented group of young players was asked to get some time off the clock.

“I’ll never forget, we were just running a five-out offense – just pass and cut,” Upton said. “It was one of the longest possessions we had all year. They were just after it. It was just ball movement and it was really kind of fun to watch. I don’t even remember if we scored out of it, but it was fun to watch.”

The memory, though fond, is one of only a select few on the basketball court for the group dubbed the Fab Five before they even reached high school. As fresh-

men, they were split between varsity and junior varsity. An ankle injury cut Salem Croy’s sophomore season short as the team reached the Show-Me Showdown.

Taylor Richman missed all of her junior year with a leg injury suffered in softball.

Now seniors, Croy, Richman, Mykah Hurley, Ainsley Tolson and Sidney Lynch are geared up for one more run together – a last ride for the Fab Five, if you will.

Only three of the five are involved in track and field. The opportunity for the group to share a college softball diamond is there, but likely a longshot. This basketball season will be the final chapter for the group, which has already etched itself into Trenton High School lore with Final Four trips in both basketball and softball. Croy, Hurley, Lynch, Richman

and Tolson know this is it and they are treating it as such.

“They are practicing with a purpose,” Upton said. “It feels a little bit different.

I think they want to make sure that whatever happens this season is not for lack of effort, it’s not a lack of giving everything that they have. They always play hard, but they seem to be really focused on doing everything they can in practice and, hopefully, that translates into good fortune during the season.”

Tolson and Hurley will resume their roles at the top of the key, providing the Bulldogs with two of the best ballhandlers around. Tolson is a points machine who should eclipse Rebekah Capeder’s all-time scoring record at Trenton this season. Hurley can score as well and is an

effective three-point threat, but her ability to read passing lanes on the defensive end has her on the verge of breaking Trenton’s all-time steals record.

That duo will be joined by Croy, who should be able to return to a wing position full-time this year after being required to spend some time in the post a year ago.

Underneath the basket, Sidney Lynch has been one of the team’s top rebounders in recent years. Her physicality causes problems for opposing players under the hoop, even when they hold a significant height advantage. Richman’s return this season will give Trenton added depth in the post that the Bulldogs lacked last season. “Those girls are competitive and they are just good players,� Upton said. “We’ve been enjoying them for the last three years and I’m not going to expect that we would have anything different this year.�

For the group’s senior season, they couldn’t have asked for a much better supporting cast. Sophomore Maci Moore will be a force for the Bulldogs inside. A likely starter, Moore received big time minutes as a freshman last season. She comes into this year more polished as a result and, if possible, even stronger.

Moore had a knack for finishing baskets with contact last year - a trend that should

carry over into this season as well.

Junior Lexi Whitaker could be the best pure athlete on the team. She has a ton of speed and is a defensive stopper. Her defense on Hamilton’s Norah Ford was perhaps the biggest reason Trenton was able to force overtime in last year’s district championship game. She can play a forward position or a guard spot and Trenton won’t lose much with her in the game at either spot.

Guard McKayla Blackburn, also a junior, is back and should see an elevated role this season. Freshman Chandler Lynch will likely also see varsity minutes, spelling the starting guards along with Blackburn. “There’s not really a weak lineup there and that’s the nice thing� Upton said. “We may be stronger in one area with a certain lineup, but no matter how you combine that, there isn’t a bad lineup that you can put out there. Most teams in our area would kill to have any five of those, maybe even just having one or two of those on their team. We have eight really solid players and if we weren’t just loaded like we are, Chandler would be playing a lot bigger role because she is good enough to play varsity.�

What lies ahead in this basketball season remains to be seen, but Trenton will be a heavy favorite to repeat as Grand

River Conference champions after going undefeated in league play in each of the past two seasons, capping both runs with victories over Stanberry in the conference championship game.

Trenton should be a district title contender again this year after falling in overtime in its bid for a second-straight district title last year. This year’s district will look a little different for Trenton as the Bulldogs move to Class 3’s District 14 after sitting in District 16 in each of the past two seasons. Trenton will be joined in its new district home by Brookfield, Carrollton, Higginsville, Lexington, Richmond, St. Paul Lutheran of Concordia and Chillicothe, which comes back down to Class 3 from Class 4.

Trenton will hope to avoid injuries this season as well, something the Bulldogs haven’t been very good at lately. There are some minor aches and ails within the team already - a byproduct of a softball season that ran all the way to the state

championship game on the last weekend of October - but the team has all of its players available for the first time since early in the 2016-2017 season. That, at least, sets up a decent jumping off point for the Fab Five’s final season together. “I think there is going to be plenty of fun moments this year, providing everybody stays healthy – which over the last few years has always been a big if,�

Upton said. “We have a lot of girls who are not 100 percent, but I’m just hoping we can keep it together because this group is special. No matter what they do in this basketball season, they have been a great basketball team. “This group is confident in what they do. They are going to perform at their best every night because they know that this is their last run together.�

Trenton opens the season tonight, playing host to East Buchanan. Action in the THS gym gets under way with a junior varsity girls contest at 5 p.m. The varsity girls-boys doubleheader follows.

he Trenton High School boys basketball team is no stranger to having to find new sources of offense. The Bulldogs did it last year when they turned to Lathan Croy to score in the absence of Spencer Harris, Connor Cotton and Corbyn Guile. As another page turns in the history of the program, Trenton will now seek production to replace Croy, who graduated after averaging 16.4 points per game last season on the way to all-Grand River Conference and all-district status. “We are in a similar situation,� Trenton Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “We did

lose a large percentage of our offense.

Probably not as much as what we did the last time that we talked about this, but Lathan scored a ton for us.�

Trenton also loses a starter in point guard Hunter Dugan and Kade Ockenfels, who gave Trenton steady minutes in the post, is gone as well. But what the Bulldogs do have are three returning starters. Chief among those is Max McNabb.

McNabb enjoyed a breakout campaign last season, bursting onto the scene midway through the year. After a bit of a slow start to the season, McNabb

PAGE 6 emerged as Trenton’s number-two option behind Croy. He poses match-up problems for opponents with his height and length and became a prolific shotblocker last season, swatting 20 shot attempts last year. “Max has been fully committed to what we have done,� Austin said. “He has put in the time in the summer and you can tell it by the stuff we do day-to-day in practice – he is excelling at it. He is playing with a lot more physicality than he did last year in games and he is going to have to because he is going to be the guy that everybody is going to watch.�

Other returning starters for the Bulldogs are Carson Radcliff and Dylan Harris. The duo played at the two and three spots for Trenton last season. Each delivered some big performances, but both will need to deliver on a more consistent basis as Trenton looks for other threats to take attention of opposing defenses off McNabb. “They are going to have to score more points,� Austin said. “Carson wasn’t overly consistent. He had some tremendous games last year, but he just needs to take that and build off that. From what I’ve seen in practice, he is capable of doing that. He has been taking the ball to the basket and playing strong defense and that’s what we need him to do.

TRENTON REPUBLICAN-TIMES “Dylan has had moments of just exceptional basketball so far. We saw it over the summer and definitely a few times since practice has started. He is doing a good job of handling the basketball, too, but we need to get some other guys going around him to help him with that.�

While that trio will give the Bulldogs a solid foundation, Trenton will need to find two other starters. There are plenty of options to fill those spots as the Bulldogs should be able to play eight deep without missing much of a beat this season. Carson Burchett was a strong post presence last year and Isaac Harris, Jaren Whitney and Dalton Burchett have emerged as potential starters as well.

Royce Jackson has also been a bright spot in early practices and should give Trenton another option off the bench. “There is a short list of potential starters that we have,� Austin said. “Isaac Harris has shown a lot of good things and Carson Burchett and Dalton Burchett have looked good as well. Jaren Whitney has played really well and all of those guys have been really aggressive. They are all pretty strong, they can all finish around the basket and those guys are all very bright. They understand how to run the offense from a lot of spots. “It’s just going to come down to the situation and what group plays the best

together. It may not be who is the best at a certain spot, it’s about who fits in and does their job to fit in with the group.�

After the top eight, Trenton has some players with talent, but they are raw and inexperienced. With time, it is a group that could put a player or two into the varsity rotation after some seasoning.

As a team, Trenton will look to knock off Milan, the defending Grand River Conference East Division champions.

Trenton defeated Milan last year, handing the Wildcats their lone conference loss of the season. Trenton, at 5-2 in the league, finished second in the East and defeated St. Joseph Christian in the crossover game to finish third overall in the GRC. Austin again sees Milan as the team with the target on its back entering the season, but points out that the East is once again a wide open division. “I would say Milan probably considers

WINTER SPORTS 2018-2019 itself the favorite,� Austin said. “All of these games are toss-ups. You start going to schools that you are not used to playing at and anything can happen. You could see that in some of our games last year.

Our win at Maysville comes to mind.

That’s a place we hadn’t played at in seven or eight years and we went over there and played pretty poorly. We were fortunate to come away with a win. So all of these games are going to be pretty tough. We have played some pretty good basketball in our two years in this conference, though, so I like our chances about as much as anybody else’s.�

Trenton opens the season tonight, playing host to East Buchanan. Action in the THS gym gets under way with a girls game between the two schools at 6 p.m. and the boys contest will follow.

t is an intriguing year on the wrestling mat for the Trenton High School Bulldogs. Not only does Trenton field a team that has a returning state medalist, a returning state qualifier and a host of young, talented wrestlers, but the 2018-2019 season will also mark the first time that MSHSAA has made girls wrestling its own sport. As a result, Trenton has three females out who will participate in a girls-only district tournament at season’s end.

While the girls will get their first chance to advance to a state tournament specifically for their gender, Trenton will expect to have some representatives making the trip to Columbia on the boys’ side. Chief among those will be Jadan Whitney, who returns at 195 pounds after

winning a third-place medal at that weight at last year’s state tournament.

Whitney has wrestled at 195 since joining the team as a freshman. He has always had the power to wrestle at the weight, but his technique has improved each year. After earning the state medal a year ago, Whitney is poised to make some noise at 195 again this year. “Jadan is looking to be at 195 again for a fourth year, which is pretty rare when a kid stays at the same weight class all the way through high school,� Trenton Head Coach Charlie Bacon said. “My expectation for him after bringing home a thirdplace state medal last year is a state championship and I know that is his expectation as well. He’s qualified twice, medaled once and now it’s time for him

to bring home the gold.�

One weight class below Whitney is Mark Trump. Trump burst onto the scene last year at 182 pounds and will be there

WINTER SPORTS 2018-2019 again this season. He was a state qualifier at that weight and Bacon expects him to join Whitney in making a return trip this season. Having Trump and Whitney wrestling back-to-back also gives Trenton an opportunity to swing a dual score in a big way. “This year it seems like we are going to be strong from the middle weights all the way to about 195,� Bacon said. “I think Mark needs to be going down (to state) with the philosophy of getting a state medal this year.�

Below Trump is Noah Lewis. If Lewis needs a blueprint to follow, he can get it from his teammate at 182. Bacon believes Lewis could fit the mold that Trump was in a year ago. Lewis has put a lot of time and effort into the sport over the summer and will look for that to pay dividends this year. “I expect Noah to have a breakout season, kind of like Trump had last year�

Bacon said. “He’s in that same situation.

He went to a real intense camp over the summer and no one else went with him, it was just him. He’s put in a lot of work, so I’m expecting big things from him.�

A pair of freshmen will look to make an impact in the lineup just below Lewis.

If Kaden Owen and Tyler Siemer can pick up the sport at the high school level, that will give the Bulldogs a very strong stretch in the lineup. Both Siemer and Owen have had a lot of success in the sport at lower levels, but will have to transfer to a higher level of competition than what they faced a year ago at the middle school. “Kaden Owen is just a freshman, but he has wrestled a lot of freestyle and he has put in a ton of work over the summer,� Bacon said. “Tyler Siemer is another kid that went through the Kids program and I think he has had a medal at their state tournament a time or two. That stretch right in through there, we should be as tough as any team in the state.�

Trenton will likely have some open weights to work around. Connor Lovell is the team’s lightest wrestler and will factor in around 113 pounds. Austin Bouzek is out as well and should be at a lighter weight, but both of those wrestlers are relatively new to the sport.

Brice Gibler and Payden McCullough are both back out after learning seasons a year ago. They will factor into the lower weights as well and Bacon hopes last season’s experience helps those two this year. “Those first-year kids kind of took their lumps last year, but I think they are going to improve as a result,� Bacon said. “That first year is always the toughest and they are going to be able to help us out some down there in the lower weights. I expect to see some improvement out of them.�

How much improvement is made at the lower weights and how quickly the freshmen grasp the sport at the high school level will go a long way toward determining Trenton’s dual record, which has hovered just below .500 each of the past two seasons. “It’s all just going to depend on where we are at with our lineup, but I would like to see us beat teams that we haven’t beaten in the past couple of years,� Bacon said. “What’s different for us this year is that we are going to have help from the freshman class. They just need to be patient, take their time and learn the technique. There are times when they get frustrated because some of them have never even seen a

It won’t take long for the three girls to get their first taste of wrestling as the Marceline Tournament will have a girls division this year. Trenton travels to that event on Dec. 1.

The season officially begins for Tretnon on Nov. 29 as the Bulldogs travel to the Cameron Quad.

Jadan Whitney returns for the Bulldogs at 195 pounds, a weight he won a third-place state medal at last season.

Kaleb Bjornlie is a returning starter and is going to be a good player for us. Right now, we are waiting for Gage Sperry who broke his fibula during football season. We are hoping to get him back around Christmas time or right after. Those are a couple of key guys coming back and then we have some youngers guys, some sophomores that I think will help us. It will be nice to get those guys in there and see if they can develop a little and maybe get some team chemistry.

also gained a new senior, Amanda Tucker, to help provide an inside presence. We lost our AllConference guard and now we will be looking for our seniors and sophmores to step up and replace her.

Sophmore Sarah Garcia looks to control the offenseive tempo this year and be the main ball defender.

We will look to our senior Emily Otto to provide leadership and aggressiveness this year.

In addition to returning all players from last year, the boys gain five new incoming players. The boys look to improve off a learning season last year with three seniors leading the way.

Senior Andrew Garcia will look to be the main scorer and provide leadership to the team. Senior NaVontae Rainey looks to make more of an inside presence this year, scoring the ball more efficiently and packing the lane on defense. The other three starters look to take on a bigger role from last year with better ball management, rebounding, and scoring.

can do and we ended up winning nine games. We had a pretty young team, so this year our expectations are higher. We have an opportunity, with everyone returning and then adding some freshmen that are going to help, to compete for the top half of the conference. We expect to see big improvements and we think it is going to be a better year for us.

They were all trying to find their identity as a team and, with a new coach, it is always difficult to figure that all out. This year we have a lot more potential. Those freshmen are all sophomores now and we had a really successful junior high season last year and three of those

guys will be moving up to the varsity team this year. We have our two leading scorers back in Than Tomlinson and Fernando Bechtel and we will look to those guys to give us quality minutes once again.

We only lost one senior who did a lot for us, Lance Cook, so we have a lot of guys back and we are hoping to see some improvement this season.
