here is no doubt that hopes are running high within the Trenton high School wrestling team entering the 2020-2021 season. And for good reason. A year ago, Trenton sent five wrestlers to the state wrestling championships. Another five lost in the bubble match at districts, falling one win shy of going to state as well. With state medalist Mark Trump and Noah Lewis as the only key losses from that group, Trenton has set its sights on another strong season this year. The Bulldogs are eyeing shots at conference and district titles as well as a coveted state plaque - awarded to the top four finishing teams at the MSHSAA Wrestling Championships each February. At the top of the lineup Trenton returns state medalists Hunter McAtee and Caleb Johnson. McAtee finished third at state at 106 pounds last year while Johnson was fifth at 220. McAtee will likely move up in weight this season, but Johnson will continue to be an anchor in the lineup at 220. “When you earn a state medal, especially as an underclassman, it just gives you that much more of a boost for next season,” Trenton coach Charlie Bacon said. “Caleb is going to be a junior this
year and Hunter is a sophomore and they both kind of have the same goal in mind. They have gotten the medaling part out of the way and now a state championship is on both of their minds.” Those two, combined with returning state qualifiers Gavin Chambers and Coleman Griffin, gives Trenton a very solid base for scoring points in duals and tournaments in 2020-2021. “Just getting to state is huge for your confidence,” Bacon said. “Both (Griffin and Chambers) last year as freshmen, I don’t think had as much confidence as they should have until the very end of the season. They got things figured out and
really it just boiled down to confidence. They are going to take that next step this year, I hope. They know they are capable.” Trenton’s talent doesn’t stop at its returning state qualifiers, though. The Bulldogs return wrestlers like Kaden Owen, Brice Gibler and Sam Gibson, all of whom were a win away from going to state themselves last year. Owen has fallen in the bubble match at districts twice now and is eager to punch his first ticket to Columbia this season. Gibson, who reached the bubble match as just a freshman last year will be a contender at districts as well.
Flip pages for 16 page Tab.qxp_Layout 1 11/19/20 2:34 PM Page 4
Page 4 Gibler is the team’s lone senior. He would love to cap his career with a trip to state. “Kaden, Brice and Sam are guys we are really counting on to get to the state tournament and score some points for us when they get down there,” Bacon said. “I truly believe as a team this year we are in the hunt for a plaque. We can’t do it without those guys.” Outside of Johnson at 220, McAtee, Chambers, Griffin, Gibler, Owen and Gibson should all bump up a weight class, but that keeps them all in the lineup still. Freshmen like Charlie Riley, Trey Guerrero and Brayden Hughs will come in to help Trenton fill out some of its lighter weight spots, but with McAtee still sitting at a lower weight, Trenton will have to do some work to space those grapplers out and guarantee a full lineup night in and night out. Having a team with so many possible state qualifiers is nice, but the fact that, outside of Gibler, they are all underclassmen makes this a potentially big two-year stretch for the Bulldogs, at least. “It’s just really nice to have those kids,” Bacon said. “There isn’t as much pressure on them because of their age. Outside of Brice, it’s not like it’s their senior year. Seniors tend to put more pressure on them-
TRENT TON N RE PUBLICAN N -T TI ME ES selves and some of my more successful state stories are kind of those kids who were dark horses coming in. It’s just nice to have not as much pressure. They are still learning and we are coaching them that way, too.” Nate Burkeybile is out for high school wrestling for the first time and will step into the lineup somewhere around 182195. Tim Kempton and Kael Brock will also be in the lineup while Michael Nyakoojo and Gaven Kelsall are battling for the 152-pound spot. “We have definitely got a lot of experience on the team and then we have some areas where guys are going to be learning as they go,” Bacon said. Outside of the big goal of a state plaque, Trenton will compete for Grand River Conference and district championships as well this season. Last year the Bulldogs were second in both the GRC and at districts. If the team’s top-tier talent continues to develop, it might be a trophy case-filling season for the Bulldogs. “I think the conference is definitely more up for grabs,” Bacon said. “We were definitely within striking distance last year and just couldn’t seal the deal. I think we are going to turn that corner this year.” It all starts on Dec. 5 when the Bulldogs travel to the Tiger Mat Classic in Marce-

Trenton Girls Wrestling Team Enters Year Seeking Experience The Trenton High School girls wrestling team enters its third season with a new coach after the school officially split the girls program from the boys program by hiring Kayce Terhune to guide the girls squad. Trenton will be just five wrestlers strong on the girls side as Allison Yoder, Nautica Dowling, Makayla Hamilton, Mercy Schweizer and Kenzey Dolan make up the roster. Of the five, only Yoder was out a season ago, meaning the team is relatively inexperienced. Yoder paced Trenton with 10 escapes last season but the Bulldogs will have to build around her this season. With just five girls, Trenton will have trouble scoring points in duals, but several teams in the area will have similar sized girls rosters. The Bulldogs were 8-5 in girls duals last season with a five-wrestler squad. At districts, Trenton might have a tough road. Class and district assignments have not been released as of yet, but the state has yet to split girls wrestling into class sizes. This means Trenton wrestlers may

have to go through girls from schools the size of Kearney, Liberty, Staley and Truman to get to state. The girls open their season along with the boys at the Tiger Mat Classic in Marceline on Dec. 5.

t is a new era of Trenton High School girls basketball. With Lexi Whitaker and McKayla Blackburn graduating and Maci Moore forgoing her senior season to jump start her collegiate career at North Central Missouri College, the last ties to Trenton’s third-place finish at state in March of 2019 are gone. Trenton will miss Whitaker’s defense,
it will miss Blackburn’s ball handling. But, the absence of Moore’s scoring and rebounding will be crippling. A season ago, the Bulldogs were just six points shy of a district championship, falling to top-seeded Chillicothe 37-31 on the Hornets’ home floor. Moore was responsible for all but six of the Bulldogs points.
Moving on means Moore is giving up on chasing down Ainsley Tolson’s career scoring record at Trenton. But, joining North Central places Moore on a region championship contender. With the NJCAA pushing back the start of its basketball seasons to January due to COVID19, Moore had the unique opportunity to graduate at the end of the semester and

WINTER SPORTS 2020-2021 join the Pirates in time for the start of their season. It was a tough decision, but an opportunity Moore could not pass up. “First off, we’re extremely proud of Maci and excited for her to get this opportunity,” Trenton coach Kameron Cool, entering his second season at the helm of the program, said. “You can’t replace a player like her. She’s a great ball player and a better person. With her moving on, it means a lot of girls will get an opportunity to get more minutes.” Trenton will now look to players like juniors Chandler Lynch, Teya Cooksey and Gracyn Rongey to vastly increase their productivity. Lynch will likely be the team’s primary ball handler, but she will get a late start on things after missing early stages of the season quarantining due to contact tracing from COVID-19. Still, her ability to drive to the hoop should present her scoring chances as well as opportunities to set up teammates. Cooksey has shown an ability to knock down the outside shot and the Bulldogs will need that in a big way this year. Rongey, meanwhile, will be needed to supplement her two teammates. “They’re working hard and setting the tone,” Cool said of the trio. “It’s going to be an adjustment for them, but I’m excited to watch them grow this year as players and leaders.” But those three are just a portion of Trenton’s large junior class. The Bulldogs also have a big freshman group this year, so numbers won’t be an issue. Finding the right mix of players will be the challenging part. Trenton could use a variety of different sets early in the season trying to find the right mix of experience and talent. “We have a big junior class and all of them are in the mix for significant time,” Cool said. “They’re a great group and
TRENT TON N RE PUBLICAN N -T TI ME ES work really hard, so we’re excited to see who makes the most of their opportunities. We have a big freshman class as well and they’re working to learn what we do and are getting better at competing every day. I think there’s definitely the potential for some contributions there, though.” Trenton was slightly above .500 last year, going 15-12. Yet at the end of the season Trenton was playing at a level that made it a district title contender. It will be tough to be in that position again with Moore moving on. But Cool still believes his team can have a successful season. The goal of competing each night hasn’t changed, though competing might mean something different this year than it has in years past. “Our goal is to always compete, night in and night out,” Cool said. “This season, growth will be very important for us. We want to improve every game and hopefully be playing our best basketball by the end of the season.” Trenton will have the benefit of adjusting to life without Moore in the comfort of their own home. Four of Trenton’s first five scheduled games are set to be played in the THS gym. The Bulldogs open the season tonight (Friday), playing host to Cameron in a junior varsity-varsity girls doubleheader. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 o’clock. Trenton is at home again on Tuesday, playing host to East Buchanan and, due to the Gallatin Tournament adjusting its schedule in light of COVID-19, Trenton will play two of its three Gallatin Tournament games at home in Trenton. The Bulldogs will hope to get most of the kinks worked out in that span and have a better idea of what works and what doesn’t by the time the schedule takes Trenton on the road more frequently.

Trenton will look to Chandler Lynch, above, to be one of several players asked to step into bigger roles this season.

here are reasons to be optimistic for the Trenton High School boys basketball team. Their head coach, Corbin Coe, and his system, are entering a second year. He is no doubt more familiar with his players and they, in turn, are more understanding of the concepts he has implemented. Save for one Jaren Whitney, a starter on last year’s team, every single varsity level player is back, a year older, a year wiser, a year stronger. These are the pillars upon which Trenton will build its 2020-2021 season. On
the surface, Trenton looks to take a big step forward from last season’s 4-21 overall mark. “We bring 10-of-11 varsity kids who ended the season back” Coe said. “Last year we were installing everything, getting everything going and this year we are only like eight or nine practices in and things are already rolling smoothly. We didn’t have to talk about offense as much or anything like that. I think it’s just continuing to do what we did last year. Now we are just trying to key in and get a little bit better defensively.”
Though Whitney is the only player leaving, he leaves a large hole. He was arguably the team’s top player a year ago. As the lone senior he provided leadership in a transition year. He will be missed to a degree after averaging 9.5 points per contest a year ago. Trenton will be looking to other players who played smaller roles last season to step up and fill the void left by Whitney’s graduation. “Jaren was a tremendous athlete for us and a bigger body,” Coe said. “I’m excited about some of our younger kids and the next group that’s ready to go, though. I’m

WINTER SPORTS 2020-2021 looking forward to what they can do.” Trenton does have a strong contingent of shooters who will look to help replace the offensive production. Players like Brycin Loyd, Chase Otto and Gavin Roeder all showed an ability to knock down the three last season. The Bulldogs won’t rely completely on the triple, but it should figure to be one of the team’s best weapons. “The three-point shooting is a key in what we are trying to do,” Coe said. “When we get dribble penetration we are trying to kick it out and get wide open threes. Our most efficient three-point shooter last year was Chase Otto, but he only shot 47 of them. This year I told him I’d like to see that almost double. Brycin Loyd had 67 threes last year and if that number could increase it would be a good thing. Just the types of threes that we are taking needs to improve so we are being a little more efficient and effective whenever we are taking them.” While Trenton has a wealth of guards, on the inside Royce Jackson is the only player of real size for the Bulldogs. He missed the early practices being forced to quarantine – a byproduct of contact trac-
TRENT TON N RE PUBLICAN N -T TI ME ES ing from COVID-19. The pandemic will be an off-court opponent all teams in the state will be attempting to navigate this season. But, when he returns, Jackson’s role will be big for Trenton. His size means keeping him on the floor will be important for Trenton in the rebound category. Last year he averaged 8.5 points and nine rebounds per game for the Bulldogs. Trenton will expect other players to go in and grab boards, but there is no question that Jackson will be the team’s leader in that category. “He’s got to stay on the floor,” Coe said. “I’d like both of those numbers (points and rebounds) to jump up a bit this year. We haven’t seen him in practice yet, but definitely he is going to have to help anchor us on defense and be a presence inside on the offensive end.” Trenton enters the season feeling confident in its offense, but the defense is where the Bulldogs have the most ground to make up. The Bulldogs yielded over 68 points in each of their first 10 losses last season, but did much better in the second half of the season. In the final 11 losses Trenton endured, opponents went over 68

points just four times. Taking another step forward to open this season will set the Bulldogs on the right track to accomplish one of their goals for this year, which is simply to be a better defensive team. “The biggest area where we have to improve is defensively,” Coe said. “We can’t be giving up the amount of points we were giving last season. We do that just by helping and getting more pressure on the basketball.” Trenton will still look to be the high energy, run and gun team it tried to be last year, just with better results. A lot of potential success will be driven by Trenton’s ability to handle the ball at a high tempo without the unforced errors that arose at times last season. With what will look like a four-guard lineup on the floor at most times, Trenton should have plenty of ball handlers ready to take a crack at it. “My whole philosophy is that we are going to play basketball the way I envision basketball being played,” Coe said. “We just have to get better at it. The skill level of our kids is getting better. To play in a system like this where you have to put the ball on the floor, you have to move, you have to sprint, we have to get better.”
Page 9 Trenton’s boys are scheduled to open the season on Monday, traveling to Cameron to face off with the Dragons. A junior varsity session gets the action under way at 5 p.m. and the varsity contest will follow. The Bulldogs follow that up with their first home date the next night, playing host to East Buchanan on Tuesday. A JV boys game tips off at 5 p.m. to open play that night and the varsity doubleheader will follow.

We have girls that will have to step in and fill roles that they have never been in before so it will be an adjustment early on.
