They were welcomed by members of the executive management. The visiting group attended a presentation about the company’s operations and the innovative management approach followed by GPIC. This approach enabled the company to achieve international recognition. GPIC Labour Union Congratulates New General Manager
O
n his appointment as new General Manager of Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company, Mr. AbdulRahman Jawahery received a bouquet of flowers from the chairman and members of the company’s Labour Union. The presentation took place during a meeting held between the General Manager and the Labour Union members in the presence of the company’s executive management. At the meeting, Mr. AbdulRahman Jawahery thanked the Labour Union Board for this kind gesture and expressed his pleasure with the co-operation between the Labour Union and management in the best interest of the company. Bapco President Receives GPIC General Manager
O
n Saturday 8 January 2005 Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, President of the Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) received at his office Mr. AbdulRahman Jawahery, General Manager of Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC). During the meeting, Mr. Jawahery congratulated Dr. Al Sayed on his appointment as Bapco President. He praised his previous efforts developing GPIC and realising numerous local, regional and international achievements. He wished him further success in his new position. He also presented Dr. Al Sayed with a commemorative gift on behalf of GPIC’s management and staff. Dr. Al Sayed expressed his thanks for this kind gesture. He also congratulated Mr. Jawahery on his appointment as GPIC’s General Manager. He wished him every success in his new post. NEW APPOINTMENTS
s part of the company’s policy of encouraging Bahrainis to occupy senior positions, Mr. Yousif Abdulla Yousif was appointed as Plants Operation Manager and Mr. Ahmed Nuruddin was appointed as Technical Services Manager. Mr. Fadhel Mallalah Al Ansari was appointed Maintenance Manager with effect from 1 January 2005. On this occasion, the new managers expressed their thanks and appreciation to the Board Chairman, members of the Board and executive management of the company for their trust and confidence. They reiterated their determination to work hand in hand with their colleagues on the executive management and the employees to ensure the company’s growth and progress.

nder the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, a ceremony was held honouring the hardworking and outstanding employees in the private sector. The event was organised by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. HE Dr. Majeed bin Mohsin Al Alawi presented the Work Environment Safety Certificate to Mr. Eduard Horn, GPIC’s Acting General Manager for the outstanding performance of the company in this field. Honoured at the event were a number of GPIC’s hard working employees, Mr. Yasser AbdulRahman, Mr. Basim Dawood and Nawaf Ebrahim Ahmed.
GPIC Takes Part in GCC Joint Exhibition
I
n line with the directives of HE Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Minister of Oil and the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company’s Chairman, GPIC took part in the 13th Joint Exhibition of the Arabian Gulf States Co-operative Council that was held in December, 2004 in the State of Qatar under the patronage of HH Shaikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatari Crown Prince. HE Shaikh Mohamed bin Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani, Qatari Minister of Commerce and Economy inaugurated the Exhibition and visited the GPIC stand. GPIC AT DAMASCUS INTERNATIONAL FAIR
I
n line with the directives of HE Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Minister of Oil and GPIC Chairman, GPIC took part in the 51st Damascus International Fair held in Syria in September 2004 under the patronage of HE President Dr. Bashar Al Assad of Syria. HE Mr. Waheed Mubarak Sayyar, Bahrain’s Ambassador to Syria visited the company’s stand where he was welcomed by Mr. Zuhair Tawfiqi, Public Relations Manager. Mr. Tawfiqi briefed the ambassador on the company’s history, operations, Ammonia, Methanol and Urea exports and the various safety, quality, vocational health and environmental achievements. Mr. Tawfiqi presented the ambassador with a commemorative gift on behalf of GPIC’s management in appreciation of his promotion of closer relations between the two countries. On this occasion, the Bahraini ambassador to Syria hosted a reception at the Kingdom’s stand which was attended by many Arab, Gulf and foreign ambassadors who visited GPIC’s stand. They praised the high standards in Bahrain’s petrochemical industry and wished the company and its officials further growth and success. This was the third time GPIC has participated in this exhibition. This participation is a confirmation of the strength of the economic and trade relations between the two countries. Mr. Majeed Al Aali, a trainee engineer at GPIC accompanied Mr. Tawfiqi to represent the company at this event.
GPIC Exports Biggest Urea Shipment
G
PIC added yet another achievement to its record in 2004 following its success in loading a 40,000 tonne shipment of Urea on board the giant carrier MV Bunga Melor Empat. The shipment was exported on 31 December 2004 to customers in Australia from GPIC’s Urea marine terminal in Sitra. This is the biggest shipment ever to be exported to Australia since the company was awarded certification from the Australian Quarantine Inspection Services (AQIS). GPIC’s marine facilities were afforded Level 1 System Status for the export of granular Urea. This recognises the high quality of product Urea GPIC exports to Australia. GPIC is the first Urea producer in the Middle East to be afforded this status by the Australian government. Contd on... Pg 8

PIC participated in the 2nd International Training and Human Resources Development Conference and Exhibition held by Al Ahleya University in Bahrain under the patronage of HE Dr. Majeed bin Mohsin Al Alawi, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs. HE the Minister and the accompanying officials toured the exhibition. When he visited the GPIC stand, he was welcomed by Mr. Eduard Horn, Acting General Manager who briefed the Minister H.E. The employees of GPIC are considered the cornerstone of future growth and progress. s part of GPIC’s policy of allowing qualified Bahraini to occupy senior positions in the Company, Engineer Hanan Al Maskati
was promoted to the post of Training Superintendent with effect from 1st January 2005. This appointment reflects the management’s belief in the need to give women a leading role to play. It is also felt that Bahraini working women have achieved high levels of excellence and success in their job duties, hence the trust given to them by officials is quite justified. Mrs. Hanan Al Maskati expressed her thanks and appreciation to the management for their confidence and hopes to be able to meet their expectations.

GPIC AT IFTDO WORLD CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION
U
nder the patronage of HE Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, President of India and the current President of the International Federation of Training and Development (IFTDO), the World Conference of Training and Development and Exhibition was recently opened in New Delhi in the presence of more than 1000 delegates representing 32 countries in November 2004. Following the opening of the Conference, HE Mr. Abdulnabi Al Shoala, Bahrain’s Minister of State opened the related exhibition participated in by a number of international exhibitors. The Bahrain delegation of 25 participants, representing both public and private sectors, took part in the Conference and Exhibition. TRAINING OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AT GPIC
A
s part of the continuous co-operation between GPIC and educational institutions in the Kingdom, a number of University of Bahrain students joined the company’s Training Centre. During this period of vocational training the students were exposed to a variety of specialised and sophisticated industrial equipment used in GPIC. The knowledge gained will stand the students in good stead upon their return to the academic world. Students were required to prepare a study report which counts towards their final qualifications. All students who completed the programme received a certificate.
FOUR PENSIONERS HONOURED AT GET-TOGETHER
O
n Saturday 30 October, 2004 four GPIC pensioners were honoured at the Second Ramadhan Get-Together for Pensioners which was held under the patronage of HE Shaikh Abdulla bin Khalid Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Islamic Affairs and Chairman of the High Committee of Al Hekma Pensioners Society. The event was held at the Gulf Hotel. The Minister deputised HE Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohamed Al Khalifa, the Society’s Chairman to attend the event on his behalf. The ceremony included the performance of religious songs, poetry recitals, cultural competitions, speeches and Bahraini folk heritage performances. GPIC was one of the contributors to this successful get-together which was concluded by a raffle and a Ramadhan ‘ghabga’ meal. GPIC Exports Biggest Urea Shipment
Mr. AbdulRahman Jawahery, GPIC’s General Manager, expressed his thanks and appreciation to HE Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Minister of Oil and GPIC’s Chairman and to the Board members for their wise guidance. He also thanked the Saudi Basic Industries Company (SABIC) and Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC) of Kuwait for their continuous support and their efficient marketing of the company’s products worldwide. GPIC PARTICIPATES IN THE ADIPEC EXHIBITION AND CONFERENCE

PIC participated in the Eleventh Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (11th ADIPEC) that was held at the Abu Dhabi International Exhibition Centre in October 2004. GPIC presented two technical papers. The first was titled ‘Organisational Success through Effective Training and Development, the GPIC Experience’ and was presented by Mr. Sami Khairi, Personnel Superintendent during the HR Session. The second paper titled “Workplace Safety Management at GPIC” A Case Study’ was presented by Mr. Yasser AbdulRahim, Safety and Security Manager in the HSE Session. Both papers were well received by the audience attending the sessions. Mr. Dhafer Saffy, Senior Training Supervisor also attended the conference.
HEALTH LECTURE AT GPIC
A
s part of the Safety, Health and Environment Week, the Health Sub-Committee organised a lecture entitled ‘Protecting the Heart Against Disease’ at the company’s Training Centre. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Mohamed Ebrahim Amin, a cardiologist at Shaikh Mohamed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa Cardiac Disease Centre. This lecture was part of the staff health awareness programme which has the objective of improving employee welfare. The lecture was attended by a large number of GPIC’s employees.

NEW BLOOD DONATION CAMPAIGN
A
s part of the company’s Safety, Health and Environment Week, the GPIC Medical Centre organised a blood donation campaign in co-operation with the Blood Bank at Salmaniya Medical Centre. A total of 71 donors donated blood, a demonstration of the sense of responsibility and care of all employees.
GPIC Organises Charity Fishing Competition
O
n Thursday 30 September 2004 GPIC held its 12th Fishing Competition. With the participation of 20 teams representing the company’s different departments, more than 300 kg. of fish were caught during the day. The species included Chanad, Hamour, Shari and many other kinds of fish. The Urea C team came first in the Biggest Catch competition. Runnersup were the Maintenance A team who also won the Longist Fish category. The Urea C team were runners-up. The Heaviest Fish category was won by the Urea C team and the runners-up were the Maintenance D team. The Urea C team were first in the Best Quality category. The runners-up were the Maintenance D team. On this occasion, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, GPIC’s General Manager expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to all the participants in this event. The contest has charitable aims that contribute to fostering goodwill among members of the staff. He emphasised that this event would continue on an annual basis. The increasing number of employees involved is clear evidence of the enthusiasm and interest in this voluntary activity. GPIC organises this competition annually as part of its social and recreational programme for staff and in aid of charity. The catch is presented every year to the homes of the elderly in the Kingdom.

The delegation was briefed on the company’s future plans and existing programmes in training, industrial quality and safety, production and protection of the environment. A scale model of the GPIC complex was used to explain the inter-relationship between the process plants. During the visit, Mrs. Chewlian planted a palm tree at the Palm Oasis in the GPIC Complex. The delegation also toured the Ammonia, Methanol and Urea plants. The tour was concluded by visiting some of GPIC’s environmental projects such as the Fish Farm, Herbal Garden and Bird Sanctuary. At the end of the visit Mrs. Chewlian thanked GPIC for their warm hospitality. She expressed her admiration of the company’s schemes for the development of Human Resources through the adoption of the MOSIF and CREAMOC theories. She admired the involvement of workers in the improvement of productivity. She was impressed by the high levels of operational efficiency. Noted in particular was GPIC’s concern with occupational safety and providing a healthy and safe work environment. In addition giving Bahraini women the opportunity to effectively participate in the company’s operations and achievements should serve as a further stimulus for responsible development. She hoped that other companies would follow GPIC’s example in applying policies of this nature.

He presented the Qatari Minister with a commemorative gift on behalf of GPIC’s management. The Qatari Minister expressed his admiration of the petrochemical industry in the Kingdom of Bahrain. He praised its regional and international achievements. He stated that this project is an example of effective joint Gulf States co-operation to achieve the hopes and aspirations of the political leadership in the service of the peoples in the region. HE wished GPIC and its officials further growth and success. The Kingdom of Bahrain’s stand included 35 government companies and organisations representing the Industrial and Trade Sectors. The event provided an excellent opportunity for displaying products and meeting with investors from various part of the world.

senior officials. The parties included several entertainment and musical performance and activities. Some Bands as well as talented employees participated in such activities which were highly appreciated by a happy audience. The Company’s management believe this event is very important to continue to crucial to GPIC morale, taking into consideration the role of such activities in creating a family spirit, promoting a friendly spirit among all the employees a way from the climate of work and giving the opportunity to get to know each other.

The Minister of Oil welcomed both the Board members and the new General Manager. He congratulated him on his appointment. He noted that his promotion to General Manager was part of the company’s policy of qualifying Bahraini nationals to occupy senior managerial positions.
During the meeting, the Minister lauded the company’s achievements over the last years in terms of increased operating profits, profitability, environmental issues and other fields. This success is due to the continuous support of the wise leadership in Bahrain, the Government of Saudi Arabia and the Government of the State of Kuwait, which together with Bahrain own equal shares in the company. GPIC, he said, is the fruit of joint Gulf co-operation and is advancing towards further achievements in all fields.
Mr. Jawahery thanked the Minister and all members of the company’s Board for their confidence. He pledged to do his utmost in co-operation with senior management to further develop operations and to maintain regional and international achievements.

Mr. Jawahery joined GPIC in 1983 as a trainee chemical engineer and was promoted several times to higher positions, finally to be appointed in 1988 as Manager. He was Plants Operation Manager prior to being appointed as General Manager.

T
he GPIC Labour Union organised an Open Day for employees and their families at the GPIC Club.
The event coincided with the National Day celebrations and included various recreational programmes such as games and competitions that attracted participation of all age groups. In addition, a GPIC Super Star competition was held. A large number of talented young singers took part with the backing of a band. All the participants presented songs that delighted the large crowd at the event.

GPIC Marks Family Safety Day 1200 GPIC Employees Families Participate
A
s part of GPIC’S Safety, Health and Environment Week the company arranged a function for employees’ families and children to promote safety, health and environmental awareness. The event coincided with the Gargaoun Day and was held at the Gulf International Conference Centre. During the ceremony prizes were presented to the winners in various competitions about safety, health and environment, including drawing, colouring and essay writing. Winners of the safety competition organised for employees’ wives were also honoured. During the celebration music and recreational items were presented, including a traditional folk fashion show. At the end of the event all the children who attended the ceremony received gifts.

PIC Public Relations Department has produced the new 2005 calendar which this year highlights the seasonal flowers that are grown in the company’s own gardens. The flowers depicted symbolise further growth, success and happiness for everyone in the New Year. The new calendar is a further reflection of the company’s concern with the environment in addition to the increased public awareness of issues related to occupational health, safety and the environment. This concern boosts morale and promotes increased productivity and innovation.

On this occasion, Mr. Ed Horn, the Acting General Manager delivered a speech in which he conveyed the best wishes of H.E. Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Minister of Oil and GPIC Chairman who expressed his thanks and appreciation to all staff members. Mr. Horn reiterated that the aim of this celebration is to demonstrate the management’s interest in safety, health and environmental care on a continuous basis. He congratulated the employees on the success of the company in receiving the Highly Commended Chemical and Refineries Sector Award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) in recognition of its continuous efforts in the fields of safety and health management. This achievement is of equal stature and importance as that achieved in previous years. He also congratulated the employees on receiving the Safety and Occupational Health Excellence Award for Major Companies from the Minister of Labour for 2004. Mr. Horn noted the outstanding achievement of registering more than 4.5 million combined accident free employee hours in over 1000 days of continuous work, demonstrating the level of commitment to safety, both by employees and contracting companies working at the GPIC complex. He also announced the certification of the GPIC occupational health and safety management system to OHSAS18001. These achievements are a reflection of the employees’ efforts and their concern with strict enforcement of safety rules and instructions in all daily operations. Mr. Horn also said that these achievements could not have been possible without the company’s efforts in promoting efficiency and development through increased preventive and environmental awareness in the petrochemical industry. The introduction of a charity fish farm, a bird sanctuary and charity vegetable farm are steps demonstrating this commitment to the environment. He underlined the significance of this year’s theme ‘Safety is our Business’. He announced the launching of a companywide behavioural based safety programme for the coming three years. Mr. Horn concluded by saying that achievements in the fields of safety, health and environment could not have been possible without the support and backing of H.E. the Chairman and members of the Board of Directors with the continuous support granted by the Ministry of Oil, the good cooperation and coordination with other industrial companies in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and the concerted efforts of all the employees and contractors. He expressed his thanks and appreciation to all government and national organisations in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC) of the State of Kuwait, for their support and cooperation. He thanked the management and employees for their sincere efforts and loyalty, which have contributed to these achievements in 2004. He thanked the safety, health and environment committees for their arrangements and for making this event enjoyable and worthwhile.

He congratulated Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, former GPIC General Manager on his appointment as the new President of Bapco. He praised Dr. Al Sayed’s cultivation of a team spirit and his motivation of the company’s employees towards further development. He reaffirmed that the numerous awards and achievements received by the company in recent years were the outcome of Dr. Al Sayed’s unique leadership style and management policy. During these years the company realised a number of objectives including the addition of a Urea plant, safety, environment, productivity and profitability awards. Dr. Al Sayed is a remarkable example of co-operation between executive management and the board of directors. The large number of Bahrainis who currently occupy senior positions in the company was clear evidence of Dr. Al Sayed’s ability to develop human resources. He wished him every success in the future. A commemorative gift was presented to Dr. Al Sayed. Mr. Mohamed Abdul Rahman Al Terkait, the Managing Director, then announced the appointment of Mr. AbdulRahman Jawahery as General Manager of GPIC. He also announced the approval of a bonus to all employees. He praised the team spirit that is held in such high regard and noted management’s continued rationalisation of expenditure and cost reduction which led to net profits totalling more than US$90 million.

In particular his success at cultivating a team spirit and training and developing Bahrainis. The corporate culture established by Dr. Al Sayed will be developed further in the future. He will continue to co-operate with everyone in the company to realise greater achievements. He looked forward to the support of everyone to make the company’s goals a reality.
