At the beginning of the ceremony, H.E. Shaikh Abdul Rahman bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Monitoring the Issue and Implementation of Decisions concerning Fisheries, delivered a speech. In his speech , he said he was pleased to participate in the launch of the first extension of the GPIC Fish Farm. He said he considered this Project as a means of supporting fisheries by lending assistance to the National Fish Culture Centre, which is the authority in charge of fish breeding activities and releasing live fish in the natural marine areas or the newly created artificial corals. He also praised the Edict issued by His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister for the formation of a committee in charge of monitoring the issue and implementation of decisions for protection of fisheries, which committee has been formed by the authorities concerned with protection and exploitation of marine wealth, and is beginning to yield fruits. The positive results that have emerged represent the outcome of the efforts made by the Committee. Of particular interest is the issue of co-operation and co-ordination in applying and implementing the Fisheries. Law by the executive authority. Such results include, curbing illegal fishing, banning the use of harmful fishing gear and banning the catching and marketing of small fish. The committee is also responsible for enhancing awareness through the media of the importance of preserving the environment and fisheries that are a vital natural source of food. Concluding his speech, he thanked Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company for its continuous efforts to improve and raise fish stocks in Bahrain’s territorial waters. He also urged all the local economic sectors, to follow the good example of GPIC by supporting one of the vital projects that have a positive impact upon fisheries not only in the short term but also in the long run. Such projects are both vital and essential for developing and safeguarding fisheries. Then, Mr. Mustafa Al Sayed, GPIC General Manager delivered a speech in which he reiterated the strong interest and support for all the activities contributing to the preservation of the Bahrain environment. He said GPIC is fully aware of the significance of safeguarding the environment in Bahrain. It has always sought to comply with the regulations of the Environment Authority and its applications. This inturn resulted in the Company’s success in obtaining the ISO 14001 Award in 1999, which is the first international environmental achievement given to a Bahraini company. He reaffirmed in his speech that the Company strongly believes that it is an integral part of the texture of the society. With the above in mind and in order to underline its national

and social role, the Company sponsored, the Fish Farm Project in co-operation with the Fisheries Directorate, Ministry of Agriculture, the for breeding various species of Bahraini fish. This Project was launched in November, 1996. The aims of this Project are enrichment of marine life, increasing Bahrain’s fish stocks and informing the society that industrial development does not conflict with the safety of the environment if environmental laws are complied with to ensure its safety and security. He added that this unique fish farm is located in the southern part of the Complex near the water inlet used for cooling the plants’ operations. The farm has more than 10,000 seabreams which is a rare kind of fish. When brought to the farm, this species used to weigh a mere 60 grammes but now each fish weighs about 800 grammes, This is evidence that the fish grew in the proper and natural environment and this is part of the efforts made by GPIC for protecting the environment. He said that the launch of the first extension to the fish farm is planned to increase the Farm’s area by double so that it will have a capacity of 20,000 fish. This is a demonstration of the company’s desire to increase its contribution to backing wildlife in Bahrain. In addition, we will celebrate reaping the fruits of success by harvesting part of this season’s crop or production to be distributed to the needy families. The remaining fish will be released once again into the sea for reproduction purposes. Mr. Al Sayed reaffirmed his loyalty to the Bahrain leadership due to the current situations, hoping to grant our beloved nation security and stability. Concluding his speech, Mr. Mustafa Al Sayed expressed his thanks and appreciation to everyone for the continuous efforts for protection of wildlife including sea-life, animal and plant life and reiterated GPIC’s commitment for safeguarding the various environmental aspects in Bahrain. Later, H. E. Shaikh Abul Rahman bin Abdulla Al Khalifa unveiled the commemorative plaque to launch the work for the first extension to GPIC Charity Fish Farm.
