ithin the framework of the Company’s policy of supporting charitable and humanitarian organisations and societies that directly serve the Bahrain community, GPIC donated a BD37,000 ambulance to the Bahrain Red Crescent Society (BRCS). H.E. Shaikh Abdulla bin Khalid Al Khalifa expressed his thanks and appreciation to H.E. Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Minister of Oil and Company’s Board Chairman and to Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, GPIC General Manager for this generous donation. It is a clear reflection of the GPIC management’s interest in supporting charitable and humanitarian organisations in this country, he added.

On a similar occasion, under the patronage of H.E. Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohamed Al Khalifa, President of the General Organisation for Youth and Sport and in the presence of Dr. Majid bin Ali Al Noaimi, President of the University of Bahrain, the Career Compny Participated in the Day Expo which was held from 29 to 30th April, 2001 at the University’s Sakhir campus. H.E. Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohamed Al Khalifa accompanied by H.E. Dr. Majed Al Noaimi and other senior officials of the University toured the stands of the participating companies. Upon their visit to the GPIC stand, they were welcomed by Mr. Fawzi Al Jaber, Administration Manager who briefed them on the Company’s various activities.

PIC took part in Career Expo 2001 that was jointly organised by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and the Rotary Clubs on the island under the patronage of H.E. Abdul Nabi Al Shoala, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs from 9 to 11th April,2001.

This is considered as the second time for the Company to participate in this event. The Expo aims at giving the students looking for jobs information about the available opportunities in different sectors and the jobs available in local companies and businesses. The students were impressed with the information provided at the stand about the operations and training programmes on offer.

His Excellency the Minister accompanied by senior Ministry officials toured the stands of participating companies and businesses. Upon arriving at the GPIC stand, the Minister was received by the Company’s senior Training Centre officials led by Mr. Sami Khairi, Personnel Superintendent and Acting Training Superintendent. They briefed the Minister on the Company’s products, business activities and interest in training Bahraini school and university graduates.

The main theme discussed at the Conference was the importance of world changing information and knowledge of human resources development in these times of globalisation and competition privatisation, fast communication, Internet and home banking. This is a fundamental requirement for the professional of human resources development to know how to face the changes. The future IFTDO President Mr. Ebrahim Al Dossary, President of Bahrain Society of Training and Development and the head of the Bahrain delegation, said at the opening that Bahrain is one of the world’s most developed countries in training and development. His goal is to aim for excellence in next year’s conference. He invited participants to join the 31st IFTDO Conference in Bahrain on 21st - 24th April, 2002.

Bahrain’s delegation of 20 participants representing both local and private sectors took part in the Conference and Exhibition. Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General Manager attended the Conference and Exhibition. Also taking part in these events was Mr. Sami Khairi, GPIC Personnel and Training Superintendent. Following the Conference, the Bahrain delegation organised a cocktail reception for all the conference delegations at which the Bahrain delegation wore the national dress representing Bahrain and the Arab culture. This was warmly welcomed by all the international delegations that attended this event.

Following the opening of the Conference, the Governor opened the attached Exhibition which was participated in by a number of international exhibitors including the State of Bahrain organised by Bahrain Society of Training and Development to promote Bahrain’s 31st IFTDO World Conference.

he Economic Committee of the Arab Fertilizer Federation held a workshop on “Marketing Skills and Principles of Price Forecasts” in the Republic of Tunisia during the period from 16 to 20th April, 2001. The event was organised in collaboration with the International Fertilizer Development Centre (IFDC) and the Tunisian corporate members of the Arab Fertilizer Federation (AFF). Participating in the workshop were Mr. Yusuf Fakhroo, Marketing and Planning Manager, Mr. Yasser Abdul Rahman, Financial Co-ordinator, Mr. Ahmed Mahmood, Marketing Superintendent as well as 80 participants from the FAA member companies.

n line with the Company’s strategy resulting from various focused meetings the Technical Division invited Mr. Stanley Anderson, Senior Risk and Reliability Engineer from Technical Safety Specialists EQE Limited - USA, recently visited the GPIC Complex for two weeks to review the many Process Safety Management control systems in place at GPIC. A GPIC PSM Review Team was formed to review PSM controls in 1999, comprising of the Safety and Security Manager, Chief Engineer, Senior Project Engineer, Ammonia Superintendent, Quality and Environment Facilitator, Safety and Security Superintendent and Inspection Testing Engineer.

The recent audit and associated training conducted by Mr. Anderson was co-ordinate as a further safety initiative by GPIC management. This is particularly commendable for GPIC as the US safety laws and standards are not compulsory in this country but are another example of GPIC wishing to meet all appropriate international safety, health and environmental standards.

Mr. Anderson audited GPIC Safety Systems in accordance with ‘OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) mandatory laws and standard regarding Process Safety Management. The purpose of the standard is to help provide a base set of largely technical safety requirements for organisations that manufacture or otherwise handle quantities of hazardous, toxic and flammable chemicals. The safety systems required assist organisations in preventing major releases of these types of chemicals that could create disaster.

Mr. Anderson was extremely impressed with the existing ‘PSM’ control systems GPIC already had in place. Full compliance with the US ‘PSM’ standard should be fully achieved at GPIC by the end of this year. LECTURES ON THE ENVIRONMENT

A

s part of the activities of the Environment Sub-committee formed by Safety, Health and Environment Committee for promotion of environmental awareness among the employees, a lecture entitled “Environmental Developments in the Gulf Region” was organised by the Subcommittee in co-operation with the UN Environment Programme. The lecture was delivered by Miss Melanie Hutchins of the UNEP Office in Bahrain. She was accompanied by Dr. Ahmed Basil Al Yousif, Industry Programme Officer at the Office. The lecture was well attended and attracted the interest of many GPIC employees. The lecturer was impressed with the efforts of the Company for protection of the environment and ensuring that operations of the Company would create a clean industry.

The Environment Sub-committee organised another lecture entitled “Protection of Marine Environment” delivered by Mr. Isa Yateem, Marine Security and Environment Protection Oficer at Mina Sulman. Mr. Yateem said he was greatly impressed with the interest shown by GPIC management in protecting the environment through compliance with international standards, setting up the Charity Fish Farm and protecting the marine environment around the petrochemical plants. He said such steps have a positive impact upon the Company’s reputation in safeguarding the Bahrain local environment.

s part of the health and cultural activities of the Health Sub-committee formed by the Company’s Safety, Health and Environment Committee, a lecture entitled “How to Deal with Headaches” was recently delivered at the Training Centre by Dr. Isa Al Sheroogi, Consultant Neurologist at Sulmaniya Medical Centre. This lecture was held as part of the health awareness programmes for the Company’s employees and its significance to such factors as job satisfaction and positive reflection on performance and productivity. Many GPIC employees attended this lecture which provided them with useful information.

ARAB PETROCHEMICAL CONFERENCE OPENED (Cont from page 2)

The Conference’s theme was “Prospects for Integration of Petrochemical Industries in View of Global Developments”. H.E. Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Minister of Oil and GPIC Chairman delivered the opening speech. He was followed by H.E. Mr. Talaat bin Dhafer, AIDMO Director General who delivered a speech to the Conference. Other speakers included Mr. Nasser Ahmed Al Sayyari Chairman of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) and Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, Chairman of the Conference’s Organising Committee. Participating in the Conference were some 250 participants from 12 Arab states and 5 other countries and they discussed 22 working papers covering a wide range of specialised topics.

Conference visited the GPIC Complex. They were welcomed by department managers and were briefed on the production of Ammonia, Methanol and Urea. Their tour of the Complex included visits to the plants and Charity Fish Farm.

On the sidelines of the Conference, H.E. Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Minister of Oil and GPIC Chairman accompanied by H.E. Mr. Nabil al Hamar, Minister of Information opened the exhibition held on the fringes of the Conference. The Ministers and prominent figures toured the stands of this exhibition.

ithin the framework of the ongoing cooperation between GPIC and the Ministry of Education, the Company organised a number of lectures related to the environment. A number of engineers were sent to intermediate schools throughout Bahrain to give lectures about the environment. These lectures are aimed at drawing the students’ attention to the significance of protecting the environment and how to reduce pollution that has negative effects on man and the environment. and school administration staff. HAMAD TOWN GIRL GUIDES VISIT GPIC

A

group of Hamad Town Primary Girls School girl guides recently visited the GPIC Complex. Soon after their arrival, they watched a documentary showing them stages of production, industrial processes and the Company’s concern with safety and the environment. The group then made a tour of the Company’s plants and

Charity Fish Farm. This visit comes as part of the School’s activities to familiarise its pupils with the interest shown by the Company in safety and environment and the good reputation enjoyed by the Company in these fields. At the end of the visit, the school girls said they were pleased with this familiarisation tour.

H.H. BAHRAIN FOOTBALL FEDERATION CHAIRMAN HONOURS GPIC FOOTBALL TEAM

. H. Shaikh Salman bin Mohamed Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Bahrain Football Federation and Shaikh Ahmed bin Ali Al Khalifa, Board Chairman of Muharraq Sports Club visited GPIC Complex on Monday 16th April, 2001.

Afterwards, H.H. Shaikh Salman bin Mohamed Al Khalifa and Shaikh Ahemd bin Ali Al Khalifa presented certificates of merit and token gifts to members of the GPIC football team who won the Companies & Establishments Football League Championship during the 2000 sports season.

They were welcomed by Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, GPIC General Manager and members of the Company’s executive management. He briefed them on the Company’s operations and achievements in the areas of production quality, environment and safety, as well as about the Company’s future projects. In a speech, he praised the commendable efforts made by His Highness the Bahrain Football Federation Chairman and other officials responsible for developing sport in the country through their support and encouragement. Such efforts have succeeded in admirable achievements being realised by all sports teams. He reaffirmed the Company’s willingness to support sports on the island and added that the GPIC management was keen on setting aside an annual budget for promoting sports activities.

Later the prominent visitors were briefed on production and export processes and stages for Ammonia, Urea and Methanol with the use of the plants’ scale model. The group also made a tour of the plants and Charity Fish Farm at the end of the visit H.H. Chairman of the Bahrain Football Federation and Muharraq Club Chairman expressed their thanks and appreciation to Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed for his hospitality and warm welcome. They also praised the efforts made by the GPIC management to develop the Company in various fields and noted in particular the numerous achievements made by the Company in different areas. They made particular mention of the Company’s outstanding efforts in community service by supporting charitable, social and sports activities and said the Company was a good example that should be followed by all companies and firms in the country. They also expressed hope that other companies would support sports events and activities on the island.

On the sidelines of this event, GPIC honoured the Company’s volleyball team who won the Industrial Companies Volleyball League for the 2000 season. Merit certificates and prizes were presented to the team members. Later, Shaikh Hisham bin Abdul Rahman Al Khalifa delivered a speech in which he expressed his thanks and appreciation to GPIC management for this kind gesture and praised the support received by the Club from GPIC. luncheon was held by GPIC on Sunday 13th May, 2001 in honour of Al Hilal Handball Club’s winning the 21st Gulf Handball Clubs Cup Winners Championship for winning the late H.H. Shaikh Isa bin Sulman Al Khalifa Tropy that was recently held in Bahrain.

Afterwards the team’s coach Captain Abdul Aziz bin Saqer delivered a speech on behalf of the team members in which he praised the efforts made by Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed and his keen desire to meet with the players to give them advice during this event.

ithin the Company’s policy of supporting the island, the Company sponsored the 15th championship of the President of the General Organisation for Youth & Sports Cup, organised by the Bahrain Tennis Club during the period from 7th June to 3rd July, 2001. The Championship matches and final ceremony were held at the Club’s grounds in Juffair under the auspices of His Excellency Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohamed Al Khalifa, President of General Organisation for Youth and Sports. The final ceremony was attended by Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohamed Al Khalifa, President of General Organisation for Youth and Sports, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General Manager, as well as a number of the officials and a large gathering of tennis enthusiasts. The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bahrain Tennis Club Mr. Yousif Haider praised the annual support given by GPIC to the Tennis Tournament of the President of GOYS, organised by the club and sponsored annually by GPIC since 1992.

Mr. Yousif Haider on behalf of members of the Executive Committee and all the Club members extended their thanks and appreciation for this kind gesture by the Company and praised the Company’s role as an important national company supporting and assisting national clubs, youth and sports activities in Bahrain. He stressed that such support has had a considerable impact on the continuation and success of the annual championship until it has developed into a major tennis championship in Bahrain.
