GPIC CELEBRATES RECEIVING HIS HIGHNESS THE PRIME MINISTER’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN INDUSTRY

U

nder the patronage of H.E. Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Minister of Oil and GPIC Chairman, the Company recently held a major ceremony at the Gulf International Convention Centre on the occasion of receiving His Highness the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Industry, for major companies. At the opening of the event, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General Manager, said in a speech that the award marked the achievements made by GPIC in various fields. He expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the continuous support and backing received by the Company from His Majesty the King Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister and His Highness Shaikh Salamn bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Commander-in-Chief of the Bahrain Defence Force.

He also praised the continuous support given to GPIC by the Shareholders from Kuwait represented by Petrochemical Industries Company an Saudi Arabia represented by Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC). He also thanked all the GPIC employees for their sincere efforts towards the Company’s growth and success that culminated in the outstanding results achieved through their co-operation and team spirit. He noted with satisfaction the employees’ high level of performance, compliance with the highest safety levels and protection of the environment and applying quality standards.

He added that given the spirit of hope and positive contributions within our constitutional monarchy, he is honoured to take pride in GPIC’s participation in this progress and development. The Company’s success in winning His Highness the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Industry is considered a major achievement not only for GPIC but also for Bahrain industry in general.

He noted that it was encouraging that the Company’s success in winning this major award coincided with the Company’s 22nd anniversary and continuation of the high level of production efficiency in the three plants. Overall production of Ammonia, Methanol and Urea totaled more than 1,479 million metric tons or 8% more than the projected figure. Such products were marketed on the world markets, mainly the United States of America, South America, the Indian subcontinent and Japan.

He expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the pioneer of industrial progress, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the Prime Minister for his kind support and backing for industrial companies that are now strongly motivated for growth and development to diversify Bahrain’s sources of income.

He further said he was pleased to congratulate all the employees of GPIC for winning the prestigious International Sector Award for Petrochemical Industries from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), United Kingdom in 2001. cont. on page 9 &10

GPIC PLAYS HOST TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES COMPANY KUWAIT

G

ulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) received members of the Board of Directors of Petrochemical Industries Company Kuwait, a major GPIC shareholder, at the Company’s Sitra Complex to familiarise themselves with GPIC operations and management systems. The Kuwait visitors were briefed about the reasons for the Company’s success and how it won several prestigious awards.

On this occasion, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to PIC Kuwait’s Board members for their continuous support to GPIC since its incorporation. In his briefing about GPIC’s operations, he spoke in detail about the Company’s management strategy, management of the Complex and its systems and programmes that contributed to its remarkable success on regional and international levels. It should be noted that GPIC shows considerable concern for the environment. and applies the international environmental standard ISO-14001 and

applies the advanced international quality standard ISO-9001:2000. For this reason, it received international awards in recognition of adopting the two standards.

The distinctive aspects of GPIC’s concern with the environment are demonstrated by such projects as the Charity Fish Farm, Charity Vegetable garden, landscaping scheme at the Complex and the latest project is the setting up of the Bird Sanctuary.

Moreover, GPIC previously received numerous awards such as the GCC Award for Best Industrial Company in the field of Environment in Bahrain, 1998 and the International Sector Award for Safety and Occupational Health from ROSPA, UK.

PIC recently took part in the Career World Expo held by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs in co-operation with the Rotary Clubs. The vent was held under the patronage of H.E Mr. Abdul Nabi Al Shoala, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs.

H.E. the Minister accompanied by Ministry officials toured the stands of participating companies and firms. Upon their visit to the GPIC stand they were received by Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General manager and personnel officers in the Company. They were briefed on the Company’s activities and concern with training Bahraini graduates. GPIC also took part in the Career Day Exhibition held at the University of Bahrain campus in Sakhir under the patronage of Dr. Majied bin Ali AL Noaimi, President of the University of Bahrain. H.E. University President toured the exhibition and upon arriving in the GPIC stand he was received by Mr. Fawzi Al Jaber, Administration Manager and Personnel and Training Department officials. A briefing on recruitment and training in GPIC was given. These events are designed to inform Bahraini job seekers, commercial and technical students and university graduates about available job opportunities and careers in a wide range of sectors. The students who visited the stand expressed their admiration of the Company’s activities displayed at the stand. 2

GPIC EMPLOYEES HONOURED ON MAY DAY

nder the patronage of H.E. Mr. Abdul Nabi Al Shoala, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, the General Committee of Bahrain Workers held a major ceremony marking May Day on 1st May 2002. Honoured at this event were hard working workers and employees in private sector companies and businesses. PIC took part in the 31st IFTDO World Conference which was held for the first time in the Kingdom of Bahrain under the patronage of H.H. Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister under the theme of "Power of Knowledge in a New Age".

Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General Manager presented on the second day of the conference a paper entitled "The combined effects of creativity, motivation and culture on the success of an organisation". The thrust of the paper was to demonstrate professional research into and practical experience with the impact of creativity, motivation and organisational culture on the performance of an organisation becoming a world enterprise. He highlighted the fact that organisations, whether private or government owned, can be made to work effectively and efficiently provided the organisational culture can nurture creativity, support learning and motivate the workforce. It is worth noting that this highly professional paper was based on Dr Al Sayed’s extensive research in the field of management and follows on to studies he had carried out as part of his doctoral thesis at the London School of Economics and Political Science, London University, England. Dr. Al Sayed also emphasised the importance of strategic transformation of the business of organisation in order to compete effectively and achieve success by utilising the five tasks of strategic management, which have been abbreviated as MOSIF. MOSIF is a new approach to management and stands for Mission, Objectives, Strategy, Implementation and Feedback, Organisations need to follow these steps in order to ensure success in today’s global environment. The challenges of globalization require leaders to go beyond the normal resources available to them in managing their organisations. Dr. Al Sayed’s research concluded that the most important resource available to any leader or management team is their human resources. It is by utilising these valuable resources, tapping into the creativity of the employees and motivating them towards achieving the organization’s objectives, that a positive culture is created. CHINESE DELEGATION VISIT GPIC

r. P. Hui, Deputy Chairman of China’s Sanochem and Mrs. Xiao Lui, Deputy General Manager recently paid a visit to GPIC Complex. They were welcomed on arrival by Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General Manager and senior managers of the Company. Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed gave them a detailed presentation on production operations, product quality and a number of international certificates awarded to the Company in a wide range of fields. Then, the Chinese group toured the plants and was briefed on social and environmental schemes. They also visited the Palm Tree Oasis in the Company and planted three bushes. They expressed their admiration of the Charity Vegetable Farm, Bird Sanctuary and Charity Fish Far saying that such schemes are an advanced method of preserving the environment. At the end of their visit, Mr. Hui Thanked Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed for the warm welcome and hospitality. They wished GPIC and its staff every success and progress. The General Manager presented a commemorative plaque to the Chinese visitors hoping that their visit would open up broader prospects of fruitful cooperation between the two sides.

GPIC AT INTERNATIONAL QUALITY CONFERENCE

PIC recently took part in the 2nd International Gulf Quality Conference organised by the Bahrain Society of Engineers in conjunction with the Saudi Quality Board. Mr. AbdulRahman Jawahery, Plants Operation Manager presented a paper that discussed quality development and practical steps for achieving outstanding performance through the optimum utilisation of the quality system. This system, he said, is based upon the employees’ participation and their positive contribution towards enhancing the quality concept. In his paper, he highlighted the tangible benefits of a management team that is committed to the development of the quality system as a means of achieving excellence.

Having visited the Charity Fish Farm and familiarised themselves with its noble objectives of protecting the environment by developing fisheries in the Kingdom, the visitors lauded the steps taken by the Company in preserving the environment around the Complex. They said the project was a pioneering example of the role of industry in serving the environment.

Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed welcomed the visiting group who were briefed on the Company’s operations, production, training activities, exports and future plans. They were informed about the achievements in the areas of safety, occupational health, quality and environment. They were shown a scale model of the Ammonia, Methanol and Urea plants. Later they toured the GPIC plants, Charity Fish Farm and Bird Sanctuary.

GPIC EMPLOYEES DONATE ONE DAY’S WAGES IN SUPPORT OF PALESTINIAN LABOUR UNIONS

s part of the national campaign for raising donations to support the steadfastness of the Palestinian people against the Zionist war and savage atrocities by the Israeli occupation forces and in response to the call made by the general Committee of Bahrain Workers (GCBW), GPIC employees have donated one day’s wages in support of the General Federation of Palestinian Labour Unions. On Saturday 4th May, 2002 Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, GPIC General Manager received at his office Mr. Abdul Ghafar Abdul Husain, GCBW Chairman to present to him a BD. 8,785 cheque representing the total donations of the Company’s employees.

GCBW to raise funds for the benefit of the Palestinian labour unions. Meanwhile, Mr. Abdul Ghafar Abdul Hussain expressed his thanks and appreciation to HE Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Minister of Oil and GPIC Chairman, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General Manager and the Company’s management for its speedy response and backing for the idea proposed by GCBW. He expressed the hope that other companies and firms would follow GPIC’s example in supporting this noble humanitarian cause.

Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed said all the Company’s employees demonstrated their positive response and hastened to approve the deduction of one day’s wages from their salaries. n 1st May, 2002 GPIC exported the biggest shipment of Urea granules totaling 41797.867 metric tons from the Company’s Urea shipping terminal in Sitra on board the ship "M.V. BRITANNIA". The shipment was consigned in favour of the Australian Pivot Company. This is the third Urea shipment to Australia. The first shipment was 10,000 metric tons and the second shipment was 40,000 metric tons that were exported to HI-FERT PTY LTD. The ship was loaded in a record time of 70 hours. General Manager, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed expressed his appreciation of this excellent achievement and congratulated all the employees involved n the safe loading of the ship. It should be noted that GPIC has recently received an international Urea quality award from France in recognition of its high quality standards.

ENGINEERS AND OPERATORS VISIT SAFCO AND IBN ALBYTAR

A

s part of ongoing co-operation for exchange of expertise between GPIC and petrochemical affiliates of Saudi Basic Industries corporation, a group of engineers, operators and technicians from the Company’s Plant Operations recently visited the plants of Safco and Ibn Albytar, in Jubail, Saudi Arabia. The visits were aimed at getting acquainted with different manufacturing technologies of Ammonia and Urea. Such visits contribute to the development of Bahraini manpower to enable them to occupy key positions in the Company. These contacts enable the forging of closer ties with similar Gulf companies as a demonstration of co-operation between the GCC states.

HEALTH AWARENESS AT GPIC

A

s part of the activities of the Health Sub-committee in the Company, a high blood pressure awareness campaign was jointly organised with the BDF Hospital. The event included two days of lectures in both Arabic and English delivered by Dr. Abdul Rahman Buali, Internal Medicine Consultant and BDF Hospital Medical Chief of Staff. Specialists also checked the employees’ blood pressure. A 2.5 kilometer walk inside the Company’s premises took place with 140 employees taking part in this walk.

GPIC OBSERVES WORLD TREE DAY

PIC observed World Tree Day with a large number of employees donating different kinds of trees to be planted in the Complex, believing that a beautiful and clean environment was vital for safe and healthy working conditions. Donors totaled more than 505 employees whose trees were planted in various locations to beautify the trees in various sites landscape at the Complex. Several prominent visitors and guests of the Company also took part in cultivating trees. GPIC management, led by Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General Manager shows considerable interest in protecting the environment and feels that looking after the environment is the responsibility of all.

He added that the Company continued its efforts for rationalizing expenditure and reducing product costs resulting in achieving net profits of US$25 million, in addition to continued customer satisfaction with the high quality products at home and abroad.
