President's Foreword important certificates in the quality of the laboratory work and technical inspection of equipment. This increased the number of quality assurance certificates to 14, bringing GPIC to the forefront of the institutions receiving certificates for quality performance.

We meet today for the first time in 2017, on the pages of Khaleejieh, immediately after the beginning of the New Year and the concluded holiday season. May God bless the Leadership and people of the Kingdom of Bahrain and ensure they stay in good health and happiness. I hope 2017 is a prosperous will be a prosperous year for all humanity, and GPIC will continue its journey of success and excellence, as it has in previous years. This new issue of Khaleejieh lists all of the Company’s achievements in 2016 and its chapters contain details of all the major events that GPIC participated in during the year, in accordance with the policies and strategies of the Board of Directors chaired by H.E. Dr. Ahmed Al Sharyan. The Company implemented the programmes on the basis of a clear methodology, in all sincerity and a sense of responsibility and commitment to team spirit, which resulted in various achievements and winning a series of prestigious awards that added to its reputable high position and earnings. An important landmark in 2016 was the Company achieving more than 24,901,727 million work hours without a lost time accident, equivalent to 5,365 workdays. It also won the RoSPA Award in the field of occupational safety, health and environment protection and renewed its commitment to social responsibility by winning the Arab Award for Social Responsibility among Arab companies. GPIC also confirmed its approach to human resources by winning the award for excellence in the field of human resources management in the private sector category. In terms of the development of work systems, we added two

The end of the year achieved a resounding success for the Management who reviewed reviewed the Company›s business over the past year and developed strategies and plans which will enable GPIC to continue its strong vision and sustainability goals. The year concluded with GPIC’s 37th Annual Ceremony, during which a large number of guests, including Board Members, members of the Executive Management and employees celebrated the Company’s success throughout the year. These achievements would not have been possible had it not been for the blessings of Allah, and the cooperation from GPIC’s Shareholders and Partners. I take this opportunity to extend my deep appreciation to our distinguished Board of Directors, our Labour Union and, importantly also to every employee, for their incredible hard work and dedication this year. Through the strong focus of each and everyone of you and with the wise leadership of our Board guiding us, we have continued to achieve great things. I also extend my utmost thanks to all of GPIC›s Committees who have diligently paved the way throughout 2016 and with special mention to our Ladies Committee, our Equal Opportunities Committee and of course, our Youth Committee. All these achievements shed light on the successful community based partnership that the Company is keen to foster with various institutions of civil society. I thank everyone who contributed to the success of all events and pray we continue with these achievements for many years.

2016 – a year of achievements GPIC added landmark achievements to its credit in the last year, thanks to the ambitious approach of its Board of Directors and the commitment of its staff, and in spite of the challenges of global markets. Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said market fluctuations; challenges of Chinese exports and the instability of balance of supply and demand were not able to affect GPIC’s performance and its ability to achieve sustainable development in business activities and community responsibility, which the Company considers as one of its top priorities. He said GPIC is keen to continue on the ambitious path to reach new heights of excellence to preserve its gains and remain committed to its approach towards safety at the workplace. Dr. Jawahery said he was pleased with the results in the last year when GPIC was able to achieve

approximately 5,364 working days without a lost time accident, which is equivalent to more than 24.9 million hours. He said this is a significant challenge not only in numbers but also in keeping the workers, who are the backbone of sustainable development, safe. Dr. Jawahery said record exports were achieved and the Company exported a total of 1.23 million tonnes of Ammonia, Urea and Methanol, an increase of 3 percent over what had been planned for the year. This was also an increase of 11 percent of what was exported in 2015, when it was 1.01 million tonnes. The Company also exported 348,472 tonnes of Urea to the emerging Brazilian market, which is the largest amount to be exported since the start of production. This was a significant achievement since this requires a lot of effort and work due to the intense competition to grab a share.

The Company produced 117,000 tonnes of Ammonia during the last quarter of the year, of which 17,900 tonnes was exported, exceeding the 2015 figure of 12,354 thousand tonnes. Another milestone represented the production of 113,000 tonnes of Methanol during the same period. Brazil also accounted for the largest share of the Company›s total exports at 49 percent, followed by the United States a share of 19 percent and Taiwan which had a share of 15 percent. All the exports were on board 65 vessels that left Bahrain shores. Dr. Jawahery revealed the last quarter of the year achieved a record production of 206,000 tonnes of Urea, of which 179,000 tonnes was exported,

Throughout the year, the Company exported 712,179 tons of Urea, 443,729 tons of Methanol and 78,218 tonnes of Ammonia. Dr. Jawahery said in spite of all the challenges faced by the Company during the last quarter of this year due to oversupply of Urea and the emerging Chinese market, there was no obstacle to the Company in continuing its operations and exports to alternative markets.

GPIC holds 184th Board Meeting GPIC held its 184th board meeting, chaired by Deputy Chairman H.E. Mr. Yousef bin Abdulrahman Al-Zamil. Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Chairman welcomed those attending and greeted them on behalf of Board Chairman H.E. Dr. Ahmed Al Sharyan, who is outside Bahrain on official business. He thanked the Board for their efforts during 2016 and said these had helped the Company implement all its planned projects and double its production of petrochemicals and fertilizers, besides helping it overcome all obstacles. The Board Members reviewed the Company’s most important achievements since the last meeting and also highlighted several important visits to GPIC complex. The meeting also discussed items listed on the agenda and took appropriate decisions. It discussed the Company’s operational processes, especially those related to social responsibility and community 6

development; staff motivation and work environment, training programmes and development of national cadres that have enabled the Company achieve new heights of success and excellence. The Board said it was proud of GPIC’s achievements in spite of the challenges it faced, particularly in the field of safety, where it achieved more than 25 million hours without a lost time accident as well as carrying out the largest periodic comprehensive maintenance. The Board also took note of the most important local and international awards won by the Company. The Board of Directors thanked the Company President and the Executive Management for their wise policies and directions and noted their efforts had contributed to GPIC’s continuing successes as an example of GCC cooperation. The Board stressed it would seize all opportunities to promote and develop the Company and make the most of the abundant resources available in the region, which is a major industrial base for the petrochemical industry. GPIC was founded in 1979 as a joint venture Company


in the field of fertilizers and petrochemicals, taking advantage of the natural gas produced by Bahrain as a raw material. The Government of Bahrain; Saudi Arabia represented by the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) and the State of Kuwait, represented by the Petrochemical Industries Company, jointly own the Company. The Board of Directors has representatives of the three partners. GPIC was the first petrochemical Company set up by the partners. GPIC initially manufactured

Ammonia, Methanol and related products. GPIC is looking to the future as a distinct Company in the production and exports of high-quality petrochemical products globally and maintain the position. Towards that end, there are plans to invest in, develop and modernise management and control systems within the complex. This is in addition to the envisaged expansion plans to maximize the potential of existing facilities and factories.

GPIC participates in Petrotech 2016 A delegation from GPIC took part in Middle East Petrotech 2016, held under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the Prime Minister, from September 26 to 28. In a statement, Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said taking part in events, attended by specialists and experts, was an opportunity to discuss and learn about the latest developments in the oil and gas industry, and to become aware of participants’ experiences. Dr. Jawahery spoke about the importance of the Arabian Gulf region as a global hub for the industry and praised Gulf Leaders’ efforts to develop the sector. He stressed GPIC’s delegation was keen to benefit from the expertise available at the event. He said it included information on the latest Oil and Gas Industry products and technologies in use and on the 8

current major projects for the Oil and Gas Industry. Middle East Petrotech 2016 was held under the slogan, “Together for Excellence in industry, government and education.” It is one of largest gatherings in the Oil and Gas Industry in the Middle East. The Conference, at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre, included 63 technical sessions. These included case studies as well as best practices and developments in the industry through nine major themes - operational excellence, reliability and integrity of the plant, project challenges, energy management, health and safety and the environment, risk management, plant intelligent technology, market information, motivation and human development.


GPIC applauds HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa on the Successful National Bahraini Women Conference GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery has thanked HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), at the conclusion of the Third National Conference of Bahraini Women. The Conference, on the theme, “Women and the Law: the march and the completion - challenges and aspirations”, was held as a prelude to Bahraini Women’s Day on December 1. The day, held every year under the patronage of Her Royal Highness, is credited with empowering and encouraging Bahraini women with programmes and activities to help them access new opportunities in all areas of development and support. Dr. Jawahery said December 1 this year has been allocated to celebrate women working in the judicial and legal fields. He congratulated Her Royal Highness for having selected the theme and said it was a great gesture appreciated by all those in charge

of women’s affairs. He said the important role played by women in Bahrain is visible to everyone. Dr. Jawahery spoke on the success of the Conference and praised the speech of Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments His Excellency Sheikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa during which he stressed the special place enjoyed by Bahraini women in the legal and judicial field and the great potential offered by the Bahrain Government to encourage Bahraini women to join and further develop the sector. Dr. Jawahery outlined the importance of the Supreme Council for Women as an advisory and reference body for all matters pertaining to Bahraini women. He said it was like a house of quality and knowledge that provides expertise and advice in the field of women’s progress, so that they could be a part of the development process. He said it also encouraged Bahraini women to exercise their rights and provide value-added influence to the decision-making processes.

H.E. Minister of Oil visits GPIC stand Minister of Oil H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa opened the Fourth Maintenance and Reliability Conference 2016 at the Gulf International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event was organised by the Gulf Society of Maintenance Professionals and the Bahrain Society of Engineers with the support of the Global Forum for Maintenance and Asset Management and the National Oil and Gas Authority (NOGA). H.E. the Minister visited GPIC stand at the exhibition after the opening ceremony, where he was received by company Chairman H.E. Dr. Ahmed Al Sharyan; President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery and members of the Executive Management. The Minister was briefed on GPIC operations, its high quality products exported to the world’s largest markets, its achievements in the field of health, safety,

community service and the environment and winning several awards locally, regionally and globally. The Minister expressed his admiration at the Company operations and for its outstanding contributions in the industrial field as well as its contributions towards society. He also applauded GPIC’s participation in the exhibition and said it had enriched the event sue to its expertise in the specialist field of work. Dr. Jawahery thanked H.E. the Minister for the visit and for his praise of the Company’s achievements and community role. He stressed that such praise and encouragement motivates the employees to perform better. Dr. Jawahery said the Middle East is a key region for crude exports and is a leading trading centre for oil. He pointed out that oil firms understand the risks and take action, which contributes to their success.


GPIC achieves production record in year 2016 GPIC achieved a record production of 3,348 tonnes on September 1, 2016 the highest ever in a day since the Company’s inception. At the same time, the Company also achieved a record 1,287 tonnes of Ammonia production in a day since the beginning of 2016. GPIC Managing Director H.E. Mr. Ibrahim AlMusaiteer was present during a ceremony at GPIC Complex to celebrate the achievement with members of the Company’s Executive Management and other officials. Speaking on the occasion, H.E. Mr. Al-Musaiteer said the achievement was the result of continuing modernization of operations and an eagerness to provide training and development programmes aimed at making the staff more professional at a time of intense global competition. GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said the

feat was possible due to the balanced and futuristic strategy of the Board of Directors and the Executive Management as well as all employees. Dr. Jawahery said the Company continued its success at all levels and attained international standards with a commitment to applying the highest levels in the field of occupational safety, health and quality, keeping in mind the protection of the environment. GPIC has, in recent years, seen an increase in production, which has resulted in more employment, increased exports as well as more investments in the field of maintenance and safety, making the Company an example of a clean and successful regional industrial entity. As a result, GPIC has achieved record working hours without a lost time accident, which, in turn, has led to record production levels.

Dr. Jawahery elected Chairman of GPCA Fertiliser Committee GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery has been elected Chairman of the Fertilisers Committee of the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA). Dr. Jawahery, who heads the International Fertiliser Industry Association (IFA) and the Arab Fertiliser Association (AFA), is also a Board Member of GPCA. In a statement, Dr. Jawahery thanked GPCA Chairman H.E. Mr. Yousef Abdullah Al- Benyan, Secretary General H.E. Dr. Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun and its Board for Directors for their support and assistance and for having faith in his capabilities. He said he has had the opportunity to work on several regional and global fertiliser industry forums and added his being the head of this GPCA Committee is both an honour and a privilege and that he hopes he will add value to the Committee. Dr. Jawahery further added that he would work hard to contribute proactively for the Committee’s

management and supervision and that he would also follow-up on all details and put to use his international experience for the benefit of GPCA. Dr. Jawahery said his membership of international organisations has given him the opportunity to learn how to develop this important sector in a sustainable way. With the other Committee Members, he said, he would work towards furthering GPCA’s overall strategy, especially in the light of the great development witnessed by the industry in general and the Gulf Arab region in particular, where modern factories and Arab expertise had proved their ability to lead and to innovate. Talking about GPCA’s important role, Dr. Jawahery explained how the Association is one of the largest entities supporting the fertiliser industry and contributes towards the exchange of industry best practices by organising workshops, seminars, conferences and networking sessions.


GPIC takes part in GPCA 11th Annual Conference A high-level GPIC delegation, headed by Board Chairman H.E. Dr. Ahmed Al Sharyan took part in the Gulf Petrochemical and Chemical Association (GPCA) in Dubai. The event, on the theme, New Paths in a Competitive Race, was opened by GPCA Chairman H.E. Mr. Yousef Al-Benyan, who said the Gulf petrochemicals sector needed more partnerships and mergers between companies, in addition to them adopting measures that would reduce costs and increase productivity. Several high-profile speakers, including UAE Minister of State and Chief Executive Officer of the ADNOC Group of Companies, H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, gave presentations on the occasion. In a statement, GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said GPIC, as a GPCA founding member

in 2006, has been keen to take part in all its activities and described the Association as the most prominent of the regions petrochemical sector. He said the Forum was an opportunity for participants to take advantage of the presence of experts in the field of petrochemicals and chemicals. He outlined key developments experienced by the industry globally and noted extensive discussions before the event, which focussed on growth and value addition. He said the presence of more than 2,000 executives from some of the most important global and regional companies from 52 countries contributed to creating a rich exchange of views, experiences and knowledge among participants who specialize in this strategic industry. Dr. Jawahery said GPIC’s participation in an accompanying exhibition highlighted its achievements and shed light on future projects.

GPIC takes part in GPCA Exhibition The stand erected for GPIC at the 11th Annual Forum of the Gulf Petrochemical and Chemicals Association (GPCA) in Dubai, attracted several prominent visitors, who were given an overview of Company operations, its high quality products and its application of international standards in the fields of safety and environment. With the help of models and publications, the visitors were given a presentation on the Company›s products, which are exported to the world`s largest markets. The

publications show in detail all aspects of safety and the environment and GPIC’s commitment towards the community. They also show the modernisation of GPIC facilities, its plants and operations. The visitors expressed great admiration for the Company and its efforts in community development and GPIC`s outstanding efforts in organising awareness programmes. They also praised GPIC for its many achievements and rewards it has received in recognition of this stewardship.

Mr. Ibrahim Al Musaitir has applauded the Company Management on winning the Arab Award for Social Responsibility for 2016. The Award was presented to GPIC during the Arab Network for Social Responsibility annual celebrations in Dubai. The Company was recognised for its social and environmental activities in the field of sustainable. The Managing Director congratulated GPIC President, Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery, the Executive Management and all employees for the latest achievement and expressed the hope that such success would continue in all fields, including in the areas of social responsibility, which the Company considers a major pillar of its philosophy. The Managing Director said this success had come due to the high level of support from the Company’s Chairman, the Board of Directors, the President and the Executive Management along with the employees of GPIC who had shown great dedication in the service of society. He said this latest Award had added to GPIC’s accolades of achievements and confirmed

its commitment towards safety, the protection of the environment and its strategic vision. In a statement, Dr. Jawahery said the Company had set an example and had made important strides in fulfilling its social responsibility objectives and in its support of social and economic issues for the welfare of the citizens. He also stressed the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility and said GPIC attaches great significance to staff training programmes in all disciplines in accordance with Bahrain’s national industrial strategy. The Company, he said, also encouraged its workers to participate in activities that support all sectors of society. This Award is given to pioneers of social responsibility in institutions and organisations all over the Arab world. A total of 881 applications were received from 26 sectors in 13 Arab countries for this year’s nominations. Several dignitaries in the field of corporate social responsibility, as well as representatives from 23 different countries took part in the Dubai event, where Dr. Jawahery led GPIC’s high-level delegation. 15


GPIC employees honoured at Labour Awards Ceremony

Labour and Social Development Minister H.E. Mr. Jameel Humaidan honoured hardworking and dedicated workers in the private sector during a ceremony at the Isa Cultural Centre, held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister conveyed the greetings and appreciation of His Majesty to all the honorees and his appreciation for their hard work and dedication. The Minister said the ceremony is held annually to honor and motivate Bahraini workers and encourage them to work with professionalism and dedication. Among those honoured were GPIC Marketing Manager Mr. Ahmed Mahmoud Mulla and Mr. Mohammed Yousef from the Plant Operations Department. They were honoured for their outstanding performance and for their ability to demonstrate their professionalism and dedication in contributing towards making GPIC the backbone of Bahrain’s industrial sector. In a statement, GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman

Jawahery said the annual ceremony is a much-awaited event by employees of the Country’s industrial sector. He thanked and appreciated the Minister for his efforts in organizing the event. He pointed out that the ceremony represents the recognition of the important role of officials and workers in the private sector. Dr. Jawahery added that the Company is keen to take part in the ceremony to honour the outstanding employees every year. Dr. Jawahery congratulated Mr. Ahmed and Mr. Yousef for having achieved the honour and urged them to continue to work with dedication in the coming days and months, in co-operation with the Executive Management and staff of the Company to preserve GPIC’s gains and achieve greater success and excellence. Dr. Jawahery Participates in CPCIF Conference in Shanghai With his continued efforts in internationally and regionally promoting industrial safety and environmental protection, Chairman of the International Fertiliser Industry Association (IFA) and GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery participated in the China Petroleum & Chemical International Conference, which took place in Shanghai, China, from September 12 to 13. Opening his working paper, Dr. Jawahery stated “As Chairman of the International Fertilizer Association (IFA) and as the President of GPIC, an important fertilizer producer from Bahrain, I would like to talk about Changing the World through Good Product Stewardship today.” Dr. Jawahery stressed that product stewardship and

supervision starts from the support of safety and health standards, and environmental protection on the product itself, and the cooperation of everyone in carrying out their responsibilities with regard to the reduction of any adverse effects that may result from the production and processing product cycle. The paper also explained the importance of strengthening the application of safety, health and environmental standards, particularly in light of the Fertilizer Industry’s contribution of about 50 % of global agricultural production, which of course impacts the environment. Dr. Jawahery talked about safety issues and confirmed that such practices are present in all industries


around the world, however it is also different in the Fertilizer Industry due to the nature of the products produced in this dynamic industry. He also spoke in the paper of the great progress the fertilizer industry has made in recent decades, which has contributed to strengthening safe occupational environments by implementing strict guidelines and procedures. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Jawahery expressed his happiness with this participation, stressing that such events anticipated by specialists and those interested in this vital industry is an opportunity to discuss and learn the latest developments in the fertilizer industry and benefit from different experiences enjoyed by its participants. Top Sabic official visits GPIC H.E. Mr. Anas Kentab, SABIC`s Executive Vice President for Agri-Nutrients, visited GPIC and was received by its President, Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery, members of the Executive Management and the Labour Union Deputy Chairman. The President said fertilisers are responsible for about 50 per cent of the global agricultural production but added this was not enough. He said fertiliser these days provided greater agricultural yields, but focus on the environment exposed the Industry to more scrutiny from various UN agencies, organisations, scientists, non-governmental organizations and national policy makers, with several critics saying the Industry is the main source of pollution of the environment.

He explained the importance of the Gulf region as a global hub for the manufacture of chemical fertilisers and complimented GCC Leaders for their efforts to develop the Industry that has become the mainstay of the region. Dr. Jawahery advised delegates how this vital Industry could not be stagnant but that it had to continuously evolve to keep pace with rapid developments all over the world. This, he said, is necessary since production capacity is increasing globally and that confirms the Industry’s strategic importance on people’s daily lives and basic human requirements of achieving food security. He explained the continued need for food imposes great pressure on the Industry. “As Chairman of the IFA, I would like to focus on some of the challenges, or rather, opportunities, faced by the global fertiliser Industry,” he said. “The conditions are not ideal for the market because of the economic

UAE envoy visits GPIC United Arab Emirates Ambassador to Bahrain H.E. Mr. Redha Abdullah Khouri visited GPIC, where Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery and members of the Executive Management received him. Egyptian Labour Unionist visits GPIC GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery received the Chairman of Egypt›s Federation of Workers Union Association and Head of the Workforce Committee of the Egyptian Parliament, Mr. Jebali Mohammed Jebali Maraghi. Mr. Maraghi, who is also President of the Central Council of the International Federation of Arab Labour Unions, was accompanied by Chairman of the Executive Council of the Bahrain Free Labour Unions Federation, Mr. Yaqoob Mohamed Yousif and members of the Union’s Executive Council. Welcoming the visitors, Dr. Jawahery praised the role played by the Egyptian Union in preserving the interests of workers, taking into account the interests of the country, especially during the testing times it has witnessed in the past. He said the Egyptian experience confirms the right of workers to deepen and develop their experience of

association and freedom to choose their representatives through fair process and allow, not only the promotion of workers› rights but also support of the stability and economic growth of the country itself. Dr. Jawahery stressed the importance of continuing cooperation and coordination between Arab Labour Unions and said this was aimed at improving workers› level in the Arab world, while preserving their legitimate rights. He recalled the courageous stand taken by the workers union during the extraordinary circumstances the country witnessed, when it rejected the pressure of some of its members to involve Labour Unions in political activities. Mr. Maraghi thanked Dr. Jawahery for the welcome and the hospitality and for the opportunity to learn about the modern dimensions of Labour Union activities. EU delegation visits GPIC A delegation from the European Parliament visited GPIC where they were received by Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery and members of the Executive Management. Top Sudanese official visits GPIC Sudanese National Council Chairman H.E. Prof. Ibrahim Ahmed Omar and his accompanying delegation visited GPIC along with the Sudan’s Ambassador to Bahrain H.E. Mr. Abdul Rahman Khalil Ahmed and MP Jamal Dawood accompanied the delegation. GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery, members of the Executive Management, Deputy Chairman of GPIC Labour Union and senior Company officials received the Sudanese delegation. Dr. Jawahery spoke of the close historic ties between Bahrain and Sudan and the co-operation between the two sides in various fields. He said it was in 2012 that the Company exported its first 20 tonne consignment of Urea to Sudan. Dr. Jawahery attends IFA Forum in Dubai International Fertiliser Industry Association (IFA) and GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery opened the IFA’s 2016 Strategic Forum in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Jawahery told the delegates about the IFA’s important achievements since it was first set up in 1947 until the present day. He said such forums and conferences were an occasion to enable IFA members an opportunity to meet to exchange experiences and information as well as to strengthen bonds between them and other relevant bodies.

Dr. Jawahery also mentioned the challenges faced by the fertiliser industry, which had an adverse impact on various sectors, especially farmers. He thanked the IFA Secretariat for organising the important strategic gathering and also those who were present to share their experiences. The forum is a prominent global and Arab economic event and was attended this year by more than 200 international personalities specialized in the field of fertilizers as a those interested in fertiliser industry affairs.

GPIC sets up Youth Committee GPIC has formed a Youth Committee comprising employees under 30 years old. Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said the Committee is aimed primarily at ensuring the sustainability and prosperity of the Company, and creating a direct link between the leaders of today and tomorrow by involving young people in decision making today that would impact the future. He said the youth should also understand the challenges that are being faced by the Company and what needs to be done to address those challenges. Dr. Jawahery said the Company, over the last few years, had made great strides in various fields and has contributed to Bahrain’s development. It has also won accolades and 26

awards at the local, regional and international level. He said the decision to empower young people is a solid means of ensuring the continuation of what has been achieved. The President said the members of the Youth Committee would have to work hard to continue the process of research, gain knowledge and access modern development. He stressed the Company would continue to develop and grow over the years. He also urged the Committee members to pay more attention to the promotion and use of modern technology, innovation and creativity in application of the Company›s systems to fit with modern developments and new attitudes. It is worth mentioning that 25 per cent of the Company’s employees are under 30 years old.

He was taken around a tour of the complex, during which he learnt about the various stages of operation, the top quality of the fertiliser produced and the environmental projects that reflect the harmony between the industry and the environment.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Jawahery praised GPIC’s friendly relations with Italian companies and said the Board of Directors had given this bilateral co-operation the highest importance because of the Italian companies’ considerable experience in the field of petrochemical and fertilizer industry as well as in the manufacturing advanced equipment and spare parts GPIC needs. Dr. Jawahery also spoke of the significant role played by Italian companies and their contribution in initially setting up GPIC factories as well as providing necessary technical support and services. He said according to the strategy of the National Oil and Gas Authority, GPIC is keen on closer ties with foreign companies in general and Italian companies in particular. He praised the unique and historic trade ties that bind the Company with Italian industrialists. GPIC promotes Mr. Bader Al Mansoori as Maintenance Manager

Mr. Bader Al Mansoori has been named as the new Maintenance Manager at GPIC. He replaces Mr. Ahmed Ghuloom, who retired at the beginning of September. The promotion came as part of the Company’s policy to appoint Bahrainis to senior leadership positions within GPIC. In a statement, GPIC President, Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery congratulated Mr. Al Mansoori and said he was confident the new Maintenance Manager would effectively and efficiently manage his new

GPIC Promotes Bahraini Employee as Planning Superintendent

GPIC has promoted Mr. Jasim Haji to the position of Planning Superintendent. Congratulating Mr. Haji, Dr. Jawahery urged him to continue to build his knowledge on the latest developments in his area of work and expertise at a time when there were rapid developments and changes taking place. Dr. Jawahery conveyed that Mr. Haji had been a dedicated and efficient employee all his working career and expressed how he had faith in Mr. Haji’s ability to take on the responsibilities that come with his new role. 28

Mr. Haji joined GPIC as Mechanical Engineer in 2002 and later worked as a Supervisor. He also served as the first Supervisor in the Maintenance Support Services Department, and went on to become an engineer in the same department. He holds a Bachelor›s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bahrain. He has attended training courses within and outside Bahrain, specialising in Maintenance and Project Planning.


Top UN official visits GPIC United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Bahrain, Mr. Amin Sharkawi visited the GPIC, where Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery and members of the Executive Management received him. Welcoming Mr. Sharkawi, Dr. Jawahery conveyed to him the greetings of the Chairman and the Board of Directors and gave an overview of GPIC operations, its business philosophy and modern Management Systems that give all employees equal opportunities to show off their skills and work for the development of the Company. Mr. Sharkawi outlined the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that Bahrain was in the process of implementing and said these would be in place by 2030 according to the decisions taken during a historic summit in September. He said he hoped all countries would work over the next 14 years to mobilize efforts to implement these objectives on the ground. He applauded GPIC’s efforts in working towards the delivery of the goals and its co-operation and support to the UNDP in Bahrain in the areas of preserving the environment, sustainable development, women’s empowerment and community service. He said according to international agreements, governments are expected to take ownership and develop a

national framework to achieve these goals. The private sector, he said, is also following up and reviewing the implementation progress. He said this would contribute to better monitoring across the world and assist in implementing the goals through a set of global indicators. Dr. Jawahery spoke of the close relationship between GPIC and the UNDP and said the Company had taken the initiative to implement the 17 goals as part of its objectives in long-term sustainability and its efforts to demonstrate a commitment to sustainable development practices, which have become an integral part of the Company›s philosophy and strategy. He said GPIC recently prepared its third Sustainability Report on the topic, «Leadership Innovation and Cooperation» in line with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Dr. Jawahery stressed the importance of the United Nation’s decision to adopt sustainable development goals, pointing out that the world body is seeking to promote growth and eradication of poverty and further explained the importance of the role of the private sector, especially in the fertilizer industry, in supporting these endeavours. He said fertilizers are the main source to increased agricultural yield. He also spoke of other initiatives in the field of preservation of the environment and described the move as a major step forward for the Company.

The event, under the patronage of Eastern Province Governor HRH Prince Saud bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, highlighted the theme, Excellence in the Integration of Assets. SABIC Board of Directors Chairman and Chairman of the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu HRH Prince Saud bin Abdullah bin Thunayan Al-Saud, Saudi Minister of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources H.E. Khalid Al-Faleh bin Abdulaziz, and SABIC Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer H.E. Yousef bin Abdullah, along with senior officials of the Eastern Province, were present. Welcoming participants, the Governor praised SABIC’s achievements and its efforts to strengthen the national economy. He also spoke about the Company’s leadership role in stimulating technology and innovation and its desire to focus on innovation and contribute to creating job opportunities for young people, who are then able to establish their own businesses. He said he was optimistic about the future of the petrochemical industry in the Gulf region because of the availability modern technology, plenty of natural gas, application of the latest Management systems and developing the youth. Dr. Jawahery explained how GPIC is a successful model of GCC co-operation, thanks to the support of the leaders of these countries to develop the industry and strengthen region’s prestigious position in the field. GPIC celebrates National Day

The Ladies Working Committee at GPIC celebrated Bahrain National Day and Accession Day of His Majesty King Hamad. Members of GPIC`s Executive Management, along with representatives of the Labour Union and employees, were present. Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said organising such events comes out of their desire to not only celebrate National Day but also 17 glorious years of the reign of His Majesty King Hamad. He said this also promotes a spirit of true citizenship and renews a pledge of allegiance to Bahrain’s wise Leadership. He pointed out that celebrating National Day always had a special place in Bahrain’s Character and is closely linked to patriotism as well as portraying an expression

of belonging and loyalty to the kingdom and its wise Leadership. GPIC Attends Kuwait Internal Audit Conference

GPIC took part in a Conference on Internal Auditing in Kuwait. GPIC Chief Internal Auditor Mr. Omar Al Bastaki presented a paper at the event, held under the patronage of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation Chief Executive Officer H.E. Mr. Nizar Adsani. The paper, on the important jobs that have a significant impact on the financial operations of companies, included application of duties at GPIC. The paper also discussed the importance that Internal Audit has in adding value through improving efficiency and effectiveness and, how GPIC›s Senior Management are committed to Corporate Governance and sound Management. In a statement, GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery praised the continuous cooperation between GCC industrial companies in exchanging information and experiences and said such conferences and forums follow up on the latest and best systems on management.

He said the companies are experiencing rapid growth that requires them to stay informed and follow-up and stay updated on systems or equipment. Dr. Jawahery also thanked H.E. Mr. Adsani for having invited GPIC to attend and benefit from its extensive experience in the field of Internal Audit, especially at a time when the success of most industrial companies depends on excellence in applying the best Management Systems. Dr. Jawahery also stressed the importance of Internal Audit in the work systems of all institutions and organizations and said these had an impact on controlling their professional performance rate. He pointed out that the conference had discussed several important themes, which included participants discussing ways to improve Corporate Governance and risks, in addition to re-evaluating the important role played by Internal Auditors in ensuring sound management of risks of institutional governance.


GPIC Green Wave Initiative Launched GPIC has started a drive to plant trees in Bahrain’s schools, as part of an initiative in co-operation with the Ministry of Education.

The Ministry of Education stressed the initiative would contribute to familiarising students with a concern for the environment and preserving green areas. He said it would also help in spreading awareness of the importance of the environment and work to motivate students to properly deal with the environment and work to protect it by all means available.

GPIC organises health lecture The Health Committee of GPIC organized a lecture hosted by Nutrition and Fitness Expert from the Carlton Health Fitness Centre Ms. Diana Nakhl as part of its efforts to create awareness on such issues among Company employees. The workshop also aimed to reinforce the Company’s excellence in the field of health, safety and the environment and in making sure the Company’s workers and their families remain healthy, fit and aware of the environment.

In a statement, GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said many believe their job is just to finish the working day and not to care about what kind of lifestyle they are following. Dr. Jawahery thanked Ms. Nakhl for the lecture and said it focused on one of the most important concepts of everyday life.

Lecture on parliamentary process at GPIC GPIC organised a lecture on the legislative and supervisory role of the Council of Representatives as part of its continued support of its role in Corporate Social Responsibility and addressing national issues that leave an impact on the lives of ordinary citizens. Council of Representatives Head of Resolutions & Support to Legal Advisors Section, Mr. Mohamed Mubarak Bu-gais, who addressed the lecture at GPIC’s Academy of Leadership and Learning, spoke about the Company’s role at the professional and community level and the efforts of its President, He said GPIC’s President had left a lasting impression as 40

a member of the Shura Council, during which time he effectively spoke about the cause of Bahrain’s industrial sector. The lecturer spoke on several other important topics, including Bahrain’s contemporary history, the launch of the National Action Charter, the democratic process, the era of reforms and the elections to the Council of Representatives, set forth by His Majesty King Hamad. Dr. Jawahery emphasized the important role of Bahraini citizens in decision-making and their participation in the electoral process every four years.


GPIC Working Ladies Committee visit Bahrain Mobility International The Working Ladies Committee of GPIC, in coordination with the Bahrain Mobility International, organised a visit to their centre and distributed gifts on the occasion of Eid. The visit was part of the Company’s community outreach programme. In a statement, GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery thanked the Chairperson and members of the Working Ladies Committee for the humanitarian

initiative, which, he said, reflects a spirit of sharing and the desire to provide support to the needy. Dr. Jawahery praised programmes implemented by the Committee throughout the year and its keen desire to preserve the social and humanitarian links with the Bahraini society. He also appreciated the efforts of the society towards the cause.

The Working Ladies Committee of GPIC distributed school bags to students of Government Schools in Bahrain as part of the Company’s efforts to serve the Bahraini community. Okba bin Nafaa Primary Boys School

GPIC’s new fire-fighting truck GPIC has added a state-of-the-art fire-fighting vehicle to its fleet. Specially manufactured to meet safety requirements and fight fires in oil and petrochemical plants, the vehicle can also be remotely controlled and is characterised by its ability to withstand high temperatures and extinguish a blaze in oil and gas tankers. 42

Clothes collection drive at GPIC GPIC organised a charity drive to collect clothes and donate them to the needy at the start of the winter. The month-long campaign was part of the Company’s Social Activities Committee activities and is focused on fostering community partnership. GPIC employees turned out in large numbers to donate and take part in the campaign. A special area within the complex was set aside to receive and sort out the highquality clothing. GPIC Managing Director H.E. Mr. Ibrahim Al Musaitir praised the Company’s charity activities as part of its

social responsibility efforts. He said he witnessed an overwhelming response from employees and their families, who are known for their love and compassion. He also applauded GPIC’s commitment in creating awareness of social and humanitarian issues that have an impact on the lives of ordinary people. Turkish Business Forum Delegates Visit GPIC Participants in the Second Turkish-Gulf Business Forum held in Bahrain visited GPIC, where several members of the Executive Management received them. The delegation was briefed on the Company history, its business strategy as well as its operations and production processes. They were also told about its most important achievements and its high quality products that are produced while applying the highest standards in safety and the protection of the environment. The visitors then toured the Company Complex and were taken to the various environmental projects within the complex, including the Princess Sabeeka Aromatic Plants Garden, the Medicinal Plants and Herbs Garden, the Charity Fish Farm and the Bird Sanctuary. Members of the delegation thanked the President and

the Executive Management team for the welcome and the hospitality and their efforts in getting them acquainted with the development of Bahrain’s industry. They were impressed with the unique environmental projects set up by within GPIC, which underlined the commitment and orientation towards a clean industry. They also praised GPIC’s global standards during their production process and in applying safety and health standards, which have earned it a reputation not only in Bahrain and the Arab world but also globally. The Forum was held on November 1 and 2 to strengthen the public-private partnership in the health field, encourage private sector investment, medical tourism, exploitation of natural the environment, and to identify best practices and standards for funding health and medical services in the health insurance sector.


GPIC Engineer is LEED-certified GPIC Managing Director H.E. Mr. Ibrahim AlMusaiteer has congratulated Company Engineer Ms. Reem Al-Otaibi for having achieved a Certificate in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The Managing Director said he is proud of Ms. Reem’s achievement, which proves Bahraini women are continuing to be exceptional achievers. He added the Company would continue to support its employees by channelling their energy and capability since they deserve all support and encouragement. Ms. Reem thanked the Company’s Board of Directors and the Management for its support and said this

achievement was the result of co-operation between colleagues and other employees on their efforts to modernise operations. The U.S. Green Building Council developed the LEED system in 1998 to provide a framework for the owners of environmentally friendly buildings and for their design, construction and maintenance. Since then, the council has supervised more than 14,000 projects within the United States, as well as other projects covering 99 square kilometres in 30 different countries. The LEED system is a benchmark for the design, construction and operation of environmentally friendly and high performance of buildings.

GPIC continues training programmes for summer students GPIC will continue to provide leadership programmes for students of Universities and other educational Institutions as part of a programme to increase leadership competencies, Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery has said. The programme includes field training within the Company, including its plants and non-technical Departments as well as specialised courses in first aid and firefighting. In a statement, GPIC President said the Management has developed this Summer Programme to help build leadership qualities among students, teach then techniques and help develop a vision for Bahrain. He said the programme focuses on communication and negotiation skills, understanding decision making and problem solving techniques and skills relating to

innovation and creativity. The programme also provides practical training on a number of basic skills such as first aid and firefighting. The trainees thanked Dr. Jawahery and all those responsible for the programme to allow them to train and learn and hone their leadership skills. They stressed the programme had contributed in enriching their intellectual and scientific capabilities. GPIC, in the last few years, has made great strides in the field of development and training in terms of quantity and content. The Company also believes that academics play a pivotal role in the training process and the development of cadres of the Company. It, therefore, has the latest and most modern equipment, including a scale model of all its plants.


RCO fun day at GPIC Club The newly formed Youth Committee at GPIC organised a fun day for orphans in collaboration with the Royal Charity Organization (RCO) at the Company’s Club. Competitions and games, designed to bring joy to the participants, were organised on the occasion, held as part of the National Day celebrations. GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said the

Company realised the importance of such events that showed a spirit of patriotism and belonging to the community. Dr. Jawahery also praised the arrangements for the event made by the Youth Committee and said it undertook several such initiatives throughout the year to mark national and international celebrations and occasions. He said the Chairperson and Members of the Committee had contributed to the success of the event and made sure the participants enjoyed themselves. RCO Secretary General Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed thanked Dr. Jawahery and GPIC Management on organising the event and said it fostered an atmosphere of joy and enthusiasm among the participants. He said all those attending had a good time and spent it enjoying the facilities at the club. He said he hoped other companies would organise similar programmes, following on the footsteps of GPIC, and contribute towards the welfare of orphans and other needy sections in the community. GPIC employee excels at Spartan Race Arabia

Fighting disability, and displaying his exceptional talent, grit and determination, GPIC employee Jassim Janahi won a medal at the recently held Spartan Race Arabia in Sharjah. Commenting on the achievement, GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said such successes by Company employees make everyone happy and overwhelmed. Such accolades in sports and other fields, the President said, were testimony to GPIC’s commitment to encouraging them to be competitive and creative in whatever they do. Dr. Jawahery said this achievement was special since Mr. Janahi, who is an individual with special needs, required additional efforts and commitment for the success that he got. He said Spartan Race Arabia is considered one of the world’s toughest and most challenging endurance races in terms of difficulty. He said Mr. Janahi’s achievement

made sure the flag of Bahrain flew high at the event, making him, his Company and his Country proud in the sporting world. Congratulating Mr. Janahi, the President applauded his high potential, calling it an example of how young Bahrainis seek success and achievement despite their physical disabilities and other challenges. Mr. Janahi thanked the Board of Directors and the Executive Management, whose support had encouraged him to continue his work and give him a chance to take part in sporting activities as well as other programmes involving physical activity. The race consists of 30 unique obstacles, including climbing, crawling, and running through unknown terrain, such as water pools, mud tracks, barriers and fire.

GPIC celebrated its 37th Annual Day during a ceremony at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. The event was held under the patronage of National Oil and Gas Authority Secretary General and Company Chairman H.E. Dr. Ahmed Al Sharyan and attended by members of the Executive Management, Labour Union Chairman, employees, workers and retirees.

to the throne. He took the opportunity to congratulate the Country’s Leadership for providing a safe and stimulating environment to help the Company achieve success. He said the right approach, the strategic planning and the commitment of the Board of Directors and the Executive Management were the reasons for GPIC’s global success. The co-operation by the Labour Union and the professionalism of all employees as a result of their «one family» spirit were also the reasons for the Company to achieve success, he said. Dr. Jawahery said GPIC employees and all workers had become well known around the Gulf region for their professionalism, excellence and commitment. The Company, he said, had encouraged its workers to attend various conferences and regional and global workshops to gain confidence and experience. He said GPIC had achieved more than 24,901,727 million working hours without a lost time accident, which was equivalent to 5,365 workdays. On the

manufacturing front, he said, the Company was able to produce 702,000 tonnes of Urea by the end of this year, the highest annual production since its inception. It was also able to achieve a total production of 1, 615,321 tons, which exceeded last year’s production by 123,154 tons, or a percentage increase of 8 percent. Dr. Jawahery also spoke about the several awards won by the Company on the local, regional and global stage, the most important being the Arab Award for Social Responsibility, in the category of the best companies in the Arab world, given by the Arabic Network for Social Responsibility. It also won the Arab Award for Social Responsibility Excellence for the best partnership programme and cooperation between the public sector and the private sector. The environment award for students of a secondary schools programme also came GPIC’s way during the year. In the area of development of business systems, GPIC received two certificates – for the quality of work of laboratory processes and, through being at the forefront of institutions in ensuring quality of performance.


Dr. Jawahery thanked the GCC leaders for having contributed to GPIC’s success and for providing all assistance and support. He said GPIC is today an example of a successful Gulf cooperation and added joint work had enabled it to achieve recognition. A number of former Members of the Board of Directors, who made significant contributions during their tenure, were honoured on the occasion. The Board of Directors congratulated outstanding workers who showed professionalism and sincerity

during the year, as well as employees who have completed long years of continuous service. A gala dinner later concluded the ceremony. GPIC was established on December 5, 1979 as a joint venture for the manufacture of fertilisers and petrochemicals between three countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council. The Government of Bahrain, the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) and the Petrochemical Industries Company of Kuwait are the joint equal owners of the project.
