Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co. (GPIC), Bahrain was formed on 5 December 1979 as a joint venture between the governments of Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The company was formed to utilise Bahrain’s natural gas resources for the production of basic petrochemical products. The GPIC complex consisting of two production plants, i.e. Ammonia and Methanol, was commissioned in May 1985 at Sitra Island on an area of 60 hectares. The initial plant capacities were 1000 tonnes/day each of Ammonia and Methanol. In 1989 this capacity was increased to 1200 tonnes/day of each product. In 1998 a Urea plant, capacity 1700 tonnes/day with full marine export facilities, was added downstream of the Ammonia plant.
Gulf Petrochimical Industries Co. (GPIC), Bahrain a été établi a¯ participation ég ale entre les gouvernements de Bahreïn, Koweit et d’Arabie Saoudite. Le but de l’entreprise était l’exploitation des ressources de gaz naturel de Bahreïn pour la production de produits pétrochimiques de base. Le complexe de GPIC consiste en deux usines de production pour l’ammoniaque et de methanol et a été mis en production en mai 1985 à l’île de Sitra, sur une zone de 60 hectares. La capacité de production initiale était de 1000 tonnes par jour pour chaque produit l’ammoniaque et le méthanol. En 1989, la capacité a été augmentée de 1200 tonnes par jour pour chaque produit. En 1998, une usine d’Urée d’une capacité de 1700 tonnes par jour avec des installatoins pour l’exportation, a été ajoutée à l’amont de l’usine d’ammoniaque.
