Topic of the month

Rule no.1: your team-mate is your biggest opponent. Everyone knows it and they never hide it.

In case of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg they were friends. Also good ones. They raced together in gokart and other lower categories, they know each other well and thoes days it was also common that they dinned together. But it’s not like this anymore. The reason? Rivarly. They are in the best team now, both have everything it takes to win, but as we know, only one can do that. Last year, that one, was Hamilton. The problems already started last year. After Monaco when Rosberg secured the pole in controversial way, Hamilton told to BBC Radio 5 live, that he can count his friends on one hand and he is sure that Nico can do the same. He is not in Nico’s five and Nico is not in his five, he said.

Formula 1

Few days later the British used the social media, putting an old photo of him and Rosberg saying: We’ve been friends a long time and as friends we have our ups and downs. Today we spoke and we’re cool. Still friends. But the truth is what also Niki Lauda said after. There is no friendship on the track. When you race you have to fight, that's it. So true. But there is an important thing.

Topic of the month

Rule no.2: respect your opponents.

This is what Valentino Rossi and Lorge Lorenzo learned in the last few years. Their story is completely different. They have never been friends. When Lorenzo joined to Yamaha, Rossi was already the biggest star. The Spaniard just wanted to win (clearly). In the first year he made a lot of rookie mistakes, but a year later he was fighting for the championship against his team-mate. And of course the bigger problems started that time. When Lorenzo won his first MotoGP title, Rossi left the Japanese manufacture as he lost his No1. position. Now they are in the same team again and only six points seperate them in the classification. We know that they are still not friends, but they say every time that they learned to be in the same team and respect each other.

Moto GP

We are now after the first six races both in Formula1 and MotoGP. Out of the six rounds five were won by the Mercedes (in F1) and by the Yamaha (in MotoGP) duo. Right now all is about teammate rivarly.

Briefly

For the third time this year we had the same drivers on the podium just an other time. The victory was taken by Lewis Hamilton again, second time in a row. The result also marked his second Grand Chelem; pole, victory, fastest lap and leading from lights to flag.

Mercedes team made a good decision in the second stint of the race, when they changed there strategy and put both drivers onto soft tyres instead of the mediums. In order to make the tyres last 18 laps, Lewis Hamilton had to manage them by driving slowly.

Formula 1

This backed up team mate Nico Rosberg, who was in second place, towards the Scuderia Ferrari car of Sebastian Vettel. At the second stop, Vettel tried to undercut Rosberg, but the Mercedes team covered the situation by letting Rosberg pit first.

The Mercedes cars were then faster on the medium tyres than the Ferraris and the 1-2 finish was secure.

I'm really happy. It was a great race and really positive to have a clean weekend throughout every session. The team did a great job. Going into today we expected it to be close with Ferrari as they had been good on the tyres on their long runs. The goal was to run my own race and manage the tyres as best I could; I was driving as hard as I could within the constraints of the tyres and just trying to stretch out the Option stints for as long as possible.

Quote

I never really had a threat from Nico but I didn't do anything intentionally to slow him up. Before the second stops I was able to put in a few fast laps to build the gap which I really enjoyed. Then, it was a case of managing the life of the Prime tyre to the finish. It’s a great feeling to win again in China in front of all these amazing fans. Sebastian VETTEL

I’m a bit frustrated today, as I saw how much of a difference four hundredths of a second to Lewis in qualifying can make. Lewis managed his tyres a lot in the middle stint and that put me at risk with Vettel right behind. I’m sure we will sit down and discuss it all now. But in general it’s up to me to change the situation. I just need to make a better job on Saturday. Nico ROSBERG

Circuit Strategy by UBS Because of its layout, with some long, tight corners, a significant percentage of the lap time in Shanghai is spent turning and so this is a circuit where the cars are limited by the way they use their front tyres. This will be even more true this year as the Pirelli rear tyres are much stronger than in 2014. Teams will have to work around how many laps their car‘s front tyres will last before performance drops off and they must plan their strategy around their relative strength or weakness in this area compared to the opposition. Overtaking is easy here because of the long straight (1.17km), so teams can plan for the fastest strategy, knowing that passing through traffic will not be a huge problem.

Background

A few years ago they were on top of the whole world. Formula 1 was lying before them, they were breaking the records and seemed to be unbeatable. Of course, they knew as well that one day this era will come to and end. Even Sebastian Vettel had warned them at the beginning of their descent: „Guys, remember these moments well, because they won’t last forever” – he said on the radio. It appears he was right.

Formula 1

Harmony It’s not extreme to say that this is what the modern F1 is all about. All the parts of the V6 turbocharged engines – from the ones worth millions of dollars to the ones worth a few cents – must fit and work well with each other, otherwise the complete artwork of the engineers (i.e. the engine) will not function perfectly. The engine must also fit well with the bodywork to form a competitive racing car.

Background

Let us take Honda out of the equaiton and put a questionmark next to their name. They have started the whole project a bit late and now they seem to be just running after results. In order to pass a judgment on Honda, more time is needed . One team remains: Renault. Renault that have appeared to be lost in the crowd.

Formula 1

Furthermore, it is also quite necessary to have harmony in one’s team. Similar to when the specialists who produce the car can collaborate closely and well with the ones that design the engine. All the warnings in 2013 (apart from Vettel’s one) were not without foundation. It was already clear that from 2014 you can not be successful without factory suppor,t and the teams building the cars and the engines by the same ones will have a big advantage. As we had already seen with Mercedes last year, Ferrari seem to be waking up from their nightmare.

Background

Formula 1

Disharmony It is important to note that Renault does not have a factory team. They have a relevant partner, that was almost completely unbeatable between 2010 and 2014, Red Bull. Last year there were signs and promises that they would start to work together closer to reduce the Mercedes advantage. They were determined to call in other companies and work like a real factory team.

Although, they are still missing the harmony. The new engine is proving to be disastrous. Not just untrustworthy, but much less powerful than the Mercedes or the Ferrari engine. So far the common work does seem to be going well. The Austrians and the French are like newly-weds, who after a lot of happy years together, decided to marry and move in together. However, it does not seem to be working out. Renault for example wants more space. They want to work more independently and away from Red Bull’s pressure. Thus, it looks like this marriage is going to come to the end soon.

Background

Renault is thinking abou team (more precisely to already excisting team), were promised a bigger division. Meanwhile Red leaving Formula One, bu a wake up call to the lea achieve some modificati especially now that Audi successor of Renault.

Formula 1

A runner-up spot was the result of Kimi RäikkĂśnen’s great climb up, which ended in him passing Nico Rosberg two laps from the end. The team did a great job putting him to a different tyre plan from the cars ahead. This brilliant second place finish is his first podium since 2013. The Finn crossed the line 3 seconds behind the Mercedes of race winner Lewis Hamilton. It also means an other double podium finish for the Mercedes Team even if both of their cars suffered unrelated brake-by-wire problems in the final laps.

Quote

It doesn't matter who it's against - you always try to beat everyone. But it's great to have a fight with Ferrari as well as Nico. Mercedes has been the best team on the grid for the last year or so but Ferrari are pushing us really hard now.

Formula 1

It definitely wasn't an easy win. It was close when I came out of the pits after the first stop and the battle behind me was intense. I had a bit of a slow stop which reduced my gap and when I was braking into T1 I saw them right there in my mirrors! From there I felt like I had it pretty much under control.

I have to say a big thanks to everyone back at the factories and here at the track. I know we'll work even harder to do better at the next race. That's what motorsport is all about and that's why we go racing - to fight with other teams. Lewis HAMILTON

Circuit Strategy by UBS Bahrain could be a similar kind of race to China - the Pirelli tyre choices are the same (soft and medium) and although Bahrain is more abrasive, the temperatures will be slightly cooler, as the race will be held at night. Therefore, we are likely to see a similar pattern of two stops with soft/soft/ medium as the default strategy. This season Merdcedes is less able to take risks with strategy due to Scuderia Ferrari being closer behind them. In Bahrain last year Mercedes was able to give the second placed car a chance of winning the race with an alternative strategy, which made for a brilliant race. This won’t be possible this year and so qualifying and the start of the race will be critical.

Formula 1

Would he be a sore loser, or just stroppy? Should he attack on the track instead of the press room? Well, perhaps we should not be so harsh. There is no person on the planet who would want to best Lewis Hamilton more than Nico Rosberg. However, he has reached a tough period, and coming out from a downturn like this is not so easy at all‌

The bomb exploded after the Chinese GP when Rosberg was complaining that his teammate (Hamilton) slowed him down on purpose during the race, and this was the reason why Sebastian Vettel was able to get closer and closer and eventually came to the position to attack.

Background

If he felt he was faster then why he did not overtake? Or if he wasn’t able to overtake how come is he complaining? These questions can be legitime, but the answer is not that easy. Rosberg’s complaint is in part right and in part not. It’s true that Hamilton slowed him down, but he had the right to do it as he was leading the race and could set his own pace. Nevertheless, this is not as important to us. A more important question is what led to this outburst and how Rosberg could change the scenario and his fate, if it possible at all…

Formula 1

After he lost the championship last year, he stated on countless occasions that he would return more improved and even stronger. There was a moment when it seemed to be true, as during the winter test he was more complex and ready than Hamilton who was struggling with some issues in his personal life. However, Hamilton returned. He won in Australia again and was more ready than ever before in his career. Undoubtedly he is in his best form ever: he is fast in qualifying, his tactics work well during races, he doesn’t make mistakes, and also proves to be significantly strong mentally.

Background

Rosberg can clearly see this as well. Rosberg, who had completed a really strong preparation for the season and changed his style, really believed that his time had arrived. A few weeks later he had to realise that whatever he is doing, however strong he is working, however determined he is, he cannot beat his teammate. We can all imagine how bitter this moment was when he realized this fact. For an athlete it is like hell, so is it really surprising that he loses his mind during a press conference after another fall? Can we blame him?

Formula 1

There have been several occassions similar to this over the past years. It was in the same manner that Micheal Schumancher dominated his teammate, as did Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel also. This is how Rubens Barrichello lost his motivation, how Felipe Massa lost all hope, and how Mark Webber had to accept he was to play second fiddle despite the fact that he proved to be a strong competitor, as did Rosberg, and was so close to the title of world champion. Nevertheless, in the name of all who wish for an exciting season, we can wish Nico good luck!

We had a perfect weekend here in Spain. We have a fantastic car and everybody did a really great job in the break, so thanks to the team for everything. My start was great for the first time this season. It’s been a while coming but today it worked out really well. From there I was able to control the pace and I never felt in danger throughout the whole race. I'm so happy about this win. It's still early days in the season so it's good to close the points gap to Lewis. At one point I thought maybe, who knows, maybe Sebastian can keep Lewis behind, which on the one side isn’t good for the team, but in terms of my points… It’s always a compromise, for my points that would have been better. But that’s the way it is.

Circuit Strategy by UBS Barcelona is the main test track for F1, however it can still catch the teams out and strategy plays a key role in the race outcome. It is a tough track on tyres, with the long Turn 3 the most difficult corner as it puts a heavy load on the left front tyre. The surface is also quite abrasive and as a result the Pirelli medium and hard tyres will be used again. Traditionally Spain is the race where the teams bring the first significant performance update to their cars, which can change the order.

Briefly

In Monaco we could see one of the biggest strategy errors of recent times. Lewis Hamilton had been master of most of the weekend. Only in the early phase of qualifying did he look anything other than in control. He was eagle to win again in Monaco and he had everything in his hands for this. Till that inexplicable mistake came.

Formula 1

Mercedes chose to pit Hamilton for the second time with just 12 laps to go, when the Safety Car was called for a big accident for rookie Max Verstappen at Sainte Devote. They did not have enough gap to Rosberg neither to Vettel; this is because Hamilton lost some time behind the Safety Car and his pit stop was 1.3 seconds slower than his first. At Safety Car speeds he would have needed a 17-second margin to retain track position; he was three seconds short of that.

The biggest question is: why did they stop him at all? The team says that it was because they were concerned that Vettel might pit and take on supersoft tyres, then attack both Mercedes at the restart, so they covered off that eventuality. They accept it was a mistake, but the damage is done. Now he is leading the championship with only 10 points instead of 27.

That was my luckiest experience in racing so far. What a crazy race. I was surprised when I saw no one else behind the safety car than me. I didn’t know what was happening in that moment. But I concentrated on getting temperature into the tyres as they felt like ice. Until the safety car Lewis has done a perfect job, he was better than me over the weekend, so he definitely deserved the win. I know how horrible he must feel now. This weekend was a warning for me that I have to work even harder for the next race in Montreal. For sure I also feel happy to win again here in Monaco. It's always so special, and one part of me will celebrate that victory today. A win is a win.

I can’t express the way I feel at the moment. I saw the team out in the pit-lane on one of the screens and thought Nico was pitting. I came in with full confidence that the others had done the same. This is a race that’s been close to my heart for years and it’s special to me, so I really wanted to win.

Formula 1

The team have been brilliant all year, so I don’t blame them. We’ll analyse and work out what went wrong, but we’ll do that collectively and try to improve for the future. I always say to my team and my fans, we win and we lose together. You live to fight another day.

It’s clear. No discussion. This is for me unacceptable. It was heartbreaking for Lewis, for me and everybody in the team.

Niki LAUDA

Lewis driving for championship his driven great. The team made a simple mistake, that's racing, long way to go to end of year no problem. I feel for Lewis quite unbelievable, but I have been there myself. The accident was unfortunate, Lewis was brilliant today but be confident. A good day for Mercedes and at the same time sad day for Mercedes. Great achievement for Nico not his fault what happened and Seb did a great job too.

We have won the Monaco GP and we have lost the Monaco GP all at the same time. First of all, we must apologise to Lewis. We win and we lose together and what I am proud of in this team is that we take collective responsibility. But this is a day when we simply have to say sorry to our driver, because our mistake cost him the victory here. Toto WOLFF

Circuit Strategy by UBS Monaco has the lowest average lap speed of the season at 160 km/h, but it is never short of excitement. As it is so hard to overtake, qualifying is critically important to establish a slot at the front of the grid. The track layout is tight, with no high speed corners and two short straights. Monaco requires a particular technique of driving close to the barriers and this is a venue where a driver can make a real difference. With barriers waiting to punish a driving error, there is a very high (80%) chance of a safety car, which can turn a race on its head and hand the advantage to a rival.

My immediate thoughts after watching the Monaco GP and listening to Lewis Hamilton’s comments were that he was obviously upset for the mistake by his team calling him in for new rubber with 12 laps to go. At the Australian GP in 1986, Nigel Mansell was leading by a long way when Keke Rosberg in a Mclaren stopped out on the track with a deflating rear tyre. Mansell and Rosberg were on the same Goodyear tyres. The Williams team should have immediately called Nigel in for a precautionary tyre change but they did not and very soon afterwards Nigel’s rear tyre blew on the long straight and he was out of the race and his chance of winning the Championship was very slim. Prost eventually won the race and won the Championship. Nigel finished 2nd in the Championship 2 points behind Alain Prost.

The mechanics pushed the car back down the pit lane to the William's pit and fitted the wheel back on and sent him ou back into the race. So here we have two mistakes by the Team which the driver had no control over. The decision to pit Lewis Hamilton in Monaco was a terrible decision as he was leading the race and there was only about 12 laps to go. There was a safety car situation and really there just was not enough time to change the tyres and get him back in the race in first position. Lewis had track position they should have not called him in. With all the strategies these days the driver often rely’s on his team to make decisions for him to win the race. Lewis put his trust in his team and came in but this time the team made the wrong decision. They are not the first team to do this and they won’t be that last.

Briefly

After his mistake in the first corner at the opening round, Marc Márquez is back. The day after his thrilling pole position, he made the race easier and more relaxed even if the first five laps were led by Andrea Dovizioso. When Márquez took the lead, he opened a four seconds gap which he could managae till the end of the race. The front tyre consumption was an issue also for him, so this was the best and smartest tactics he could follow. Behind the reigning world champion, the two Italians – Dovizioso and Rossi – had their second fight of the season. This time the battle ended well for Dovi, which means and other an other 2nd place for the Italian brand and for the Ducatist itself, who could handle the front tyre better. The start of the race didn’t go normally. The riders were already waiting for the start of the warm up lap, when the „Start delayed” board had been displayed. The reason was some standing water under the bridge of Turn 3 that suddenly fell down after the rainfalls of the previous days. This wasn’t the only delay and not common thing on track during the weekend. On Friday morning there was a notable delay because of the not sufficient number of the marshalls, however on Saturday a dog caused some dangerous moments during the FP1 of MotoGP.

Yes I’m really happy for this victory after Qatar. Even if we know that all was about the first corner mistake, but you always have the question mark inside of you. I felt really good this weekend. At the begininning it was a bit difficult, because after the rain of this night, the grip has changed a lot. But finally I could open a small gap and that was enough. Looks like this will be an interesting championship, because both Valentino and Andrea, they are really consistent.

Marc MÁRQUEZ

It was really difficult to manage the tyres, especially the front. This result is an other confirmation how good the bike is. We are still missing a few things on breaking and in the traction area to be in front at every track, but the speed is there. We are more in front that it was expected and the team is doing a great job.

Andrea DOVIZIOSO

On the paper this is one of the most difficult track for us and for Yamaha. Marc was faster, but not a lot. On Sundays normally I only see him at the press conferences.

That special first one, which is the most difficult sometimes. Now also Sam Lowes has it, his first ever world championship victory. He made a good start of the season already during the winter tests and also in Qatar, where he got his first ever pole position. In Qatar he crashed out from the race and he brought this form also to Austin, where he had three crashes in four sessions. Six laps to go still Johann Zarco was leading the race, when Lowes changed his rhythm. The British run the fastest lap of the race three times in a row, so finally he also opened a nice gap. Zarco could keep his 2nd place after his collision with Xavier SimĂŠon (who crashed out). The lowest podium spot went to the rookie Ă lex Rins, who leads the overall standing now.

Veni, vidi, vici – this could be the strategy for Danny Kent this weekend. He had the feeling for race already on Saturday after the qualifying and he could work it out indeed. Having the perfect pace from the beginning of the race, he could win with a huge gap. Last time that similar happened in the Moto3 category was the Catalan GP in 2012 when Maverick Viñales won the race by 7.7 seconds. Since that there were only five occasions out of the 47 races that the winner’s gap was more than 1 second. Behind Kent the race was much more exciting with lot of crashes because of the wet patches. Finally Fabio Quartararo finished second only at his second world championship race in front of the veteran Efrén Vázquez.

!

It was the first time that two British riders have won solo grand prix races on the same day since the Grand Prix of Sweden in 1977 when Barry Sheene won the 500cc race and Mick Grant the 250cc one.

MAGIC POLE

Marc Marquez took one of his most extraordinary poles at Austin, after stopping on track with just 3 minutes to go. He had to run down the pit lane to retrieve his second bike with only seconds to spare as the clock ticked down on Q2. Not even this could stop the Spaniard as he went on to set the fastest ever time on two-wheels around CoTA, over sixth-tenths quicker than his previous lap record set here last year.

MILESTONE

At the grand prix in Austin, Nicky Hayden became only the fourth rider to reach the milestone of 200 starts in the premier-class of grand prix racing. Hayden is the first American rider to reach this milestone in the premier-class. Only three riders did more races in this category: Valentino Rossi (254), Alex Barros (245) and Loris Capirossi (217).

We knew that the rear tyres and the strategy relating to them would be decisive for the race. We were also hoping for an exciting race but we got much more drama than we ever expected. From the factory riders only Marc Mรกrquez and Cal Crutchlow chose the hard rear for the Argentin GP, whereas the Yamaha riders and Scott Reddig were on the extra-hard one. So the strategy was clear, Mรกrquez had to push away immediately. On lap 8 Valentino Rossi was already faster than the Spaniard and after overtaking Doviziso and Crutchlow on lap 11, the Italian was ready to catch Mรกrquez who had a 4.1 seconds gap that time.

Briefly

!

Andrea Dovizioso’s 2nd place in Argentina was the 200th time he has finished in a point scoring position across all classes. He is only the fifth rider in the 67 year history of motorcycle Grand Prix racing history to reach this milestone along with Valentino Rossi, Loris Capirossi, Alex Barros and Dani Pedrosa.

MotoGP

The last two laps could have been thrilling as Rossi was literally stuck to the rear wheel of Márquez. Then the real drama started. Rossi overtook at turn 2, Márquez attacked back immediately to reclaim the lead. When Rossi overtook again in turn 5, Márquez kept the same line in the corner. When his front tyre collided with the Doctor’s back wheel, Márquez was a Mannquin of his Honda RC213V, unable to safe it from crashing he finished the race in the gravel. It’s hard to understand what Márquez was thinking as Rossi was fairly faster in the second part of the race. Hindsight is always 20/20 but 20 points would have been more than zero. He took a risk with the hard compound, but he rode true to the motto: „Win it, or bin it“. Big respect to Andrea Dovizioso again for his second place finish. He is the first Ducati rider ever to finish on the podium at the opening three races of the year. Third place went to Cal Crutchlow as his teammate, the rookie, Jack Miller coming from the Moto3 category, won the Open classification.

Quote

Valentino ROSSI

I’m sorry for the incident with Marc, but he touched me before the center of the corner and after that an other time. I hope that he is okay. But this was a great race and I’m very happy. I knew that I had the pace and I had to push hard, because Marc was fast, but I knew that the tyre would help me after. When you first see Marc really small, but then he become bigger and bigger, you think that you can do it. It’s a shame for the crash, but for me he did a mistake. Marc is a rider who always bet, all in. All or nothing.

„Fortunately I'm ok. It was just a bit scary in the beginning because I had so much pain in my stomach. It's a shame what happened, because we were having a good race. It was really interesting, because our tyre choice was different from Valentino's. I knew that it would have been impossible to beat him with the [same] harder compound. The strategy was working out well for us – it's just a pity about the last two laps. You saw on the video what happened. Valentino is Valentino and it is difficult to beat him. I've always said that he's my idol and my reference, so you always learn things from him.”

Briefly

An interesting tradition is emerging in the middle class category, because until now this year we have had a new winner in every race so far. This time it was Johann Zarco’s turn to take his first ever Moto2 victory. The French took the lead on the third lap, and after that no one has endangered his first place. For the second position there was a great battle between à lex Rins and Sam Lowes, which eventually ended better for the Spaniard. Rins is the only rider who finished every race this year in the Top4. The greatest hero of the race was Jonas Folger, who was last at the end of the first lap and he pretty much had to start a new race from there. Finally he finished 9th. The reigning world champion, Tito Rabat also made a mistake on the first lap, he was penultimate, then he finished 12th.

Danny Kent won this second race in a row and this time with an even bigger advantage. He once again rewrote the record of the largest margin of victory in the Moto3 class in a fully dry race. The last Brit who won two consecutive races in the lightweight-class was Barry Sheene in 1971. For the second place there was a superb battle between the following 10 riders till the last lap. It‘s difficult to even guess the number of overtakes, so let’s stay with the facts. Kent’s teammate, Efrén Vázquez finished second in front of Isaac Viñales. The biggest come back was shown by Romano Fenati, who originally qualified 8th. During warm up he completely lost his head. First he kicked Niklas Ajo, then hit him and finally he stopped the Finnish’ engine when he wanted to make his start practice. For all of these actions he received three penalty points, and he was also banished to the end of the grid. Finally the small mascot of the VR46 Team finished at 8th place.

Briefly

This was actually not the longest series of loosing for Jorge Lorenzo (his last win was at the 2014 Japanese GP), but it never happened to him before that he neither won or finish on the podium at all at the opening three races of the season. He clearly had enough of making mistakes and wrong decisions, so Lorenzo finally reconquered his Land. He said it over and over again during the weekend, he had changed his riding style since the last race, but even more important, he gained back his mental strength so he could put aside his ego. The positive change came immediately, Lorenzo won the Spanish Grand Prix confidently. Though in the first laps his compatriot, Marc Mรกrquez was able to keep his pace (on lap 3 they had a completely identical laptime), but later Mรกrquez started to have problems with his right forearm (as he had to compensate his broken left hand), so Lorenzo could move further away step by step. The weather was more than perfect for the racepace, so Lorenzo not only set a new lap record, but he reduced the time of the fastest race in Jerez by 20 seconds.

MotoGP

!

With his third place finish at Jerez, Valentino Rossi became the first rider in the 67 years of motorcycle Grand Prix racing to reach the milestone of 200 GP podium finishes.

THE FIRST SECOND WIN

No new category winner this time in the Moto2 category, but we have the first man with two wins this season, his name is Jonas Folger. The German opted for the soft rear tyre as most of the riders, other than Tito Rabat and à lex Rins. On lap 10 Folger started to take advantage of the tyre and he started closing in on Rabat (who was on top) and also took the lead. Despite being on the same tyres, Rins showed a much quicker pace than Rabat towards the end of the race. This hard battle played out over the final three corners. An all or nothing action from the rookie ended with a crash, hitting the back of Rabat’s bike at the last corner. The touch pushed Rabat slightly wide and off line, allowing Johann Zarco to sneak through. Rabat subsequently finished in third, securing his first podium of the year.

THAT LAST CORNER

Just like a typical Moto3 race, we saw a thrilling last lap clearly a breathtaking last corner fight for the victory, this between four riders. The quartet was made of the pole-man Fabio Quarta Danny Kent, Miguel Oliveira and Brad Binder. Oliveira was leading the last lap, but then he made a s mistake, so him, Kent and Quartararo arrived to the last co side by side. The Frenchman tried an ambitious move on Kent from q far back that saw him slide into the Brit and narrowly avo taking them both down. Finally Kent was able to retain his lead and won his third in a row. Oliveira suffered some bad luck finishing second with teammate, Binder behind.

Briefly

This wasn’t the race we were expecting after the qualifying and the warm up sessions. Marc Mårquez was far away from the podium, while Jorge Lorenzo took over Le Mans as well. But for us the man of the day was Andrea Iannone.

MotoGP

After a short fight with Andrea Dovizioso and Marc Mårquez, Lorenzo took the lead soon on the first lap and started to build up an advantage. In the middle of the race his team-mate, Valentino Rossi started to close up so the Spaniard had to change this rhythm again to an even more agressive one. Finally the Doctor wasn’t able to catch Lorenzo who won the second time in a row. Rossi is doing a superb season anyway. The last time he could stand on the podium at the opening five races of the year was back in 2005.

Briefly

MotoGP

The third spot of the podium went to Dovizoso, but the battle of the day was between Andrea Iannone and Marc Márquez for the 4th place, with Bradley Smith behind. On the last eight laps they had two rounds of head to head fighting with numerous overtakings just like we see it in Moto3 races. Márquez won this battle, but the real hero was Iannone, since he was riding with a dislocated shoulder (He had crashed only three days before the French weekend during a test in Mugello.) he made the reigning world champion’s life even more difficult than it already was.

Quote

Jorge LORENZO

This victory gives us a lot of confidence, but also we demonstrate our potential. This year we have a great and very competitive bike, especially during the races. We have to take profit out of these sweet moments till it last. Indeed in the last two races we didn’t make a mistake, but Valentino is having a great start of the season. He is very consistant, to reduce the gap in the championship will be difficult.

TEN YEARS LATER Five races into the season Thomas Lüthi really needed a top step podium finish with his Kalex chassis. The 28 year old Swiss had won his first ever GP here at Le Mans in 2005, so he couldn’t have a better way to celebrate this anniversary. Back then he became world champion in the 125cc category. It’s too early to say whether he can repeat it, but it’s sure that now he is second in the classification behind Johann Zarco. Zarco finished his home race third, behind Lüthi and Tito Rabat who is still without a win this year. The biggest loser of the day was the pole-man, Álex Rins, who was 9th after a really bad start, then he crashed again fighting for the 5th position. He could have finished the race, but without a single point.

ITALIAN K.O. The 24 lap race was a complete sequence of overtakings without a single moment to breath in. The battles within the first few laps seemed to be like they were fighting in the last corners. The pole-man, Fabio Quartararo crashed out on lap 18, which is the biggest nightmare to happen at your home race. For the last four laps only four guys were fighting for the win - Romano Fenati, Enea Bastianini (started from 18th), Francesco Bagnaia and Danny Kent. Kent made an enthralling race finally finishing 4th from the 31th grid position (due to a mistake in Qualifying). Fenati took KTM’s first victory this year ahead of Bastianini and Bagnaia who claimed his and Mahindra's first ever podium finish.

!

The last time that Italian riders have filled all three podium places in the Moto3/125cc class was the 125cc Japanese GP at Motegi in 2004 when the riders on the podium were: Andrea Dovizioso, Fabrizio Lai and Simone Corsi, with another Italian, Mirko Giansanti, in fourth place.

No big surprises during the Italian GP. At least talking about the winner. After both his wins in 2011-2013 Jorge Lorenzo is the king of Mugello again. The Italian fans (who created a superb, indescribable atmosphere anyway), unfortunately, are still not able to bear the defeat of their Valentino gracefully if it made by the Spaniard. They should get used to it as Lorenzo is similar successful at Misano too. So, dear fans, no catcall, please.

MotoGP

Back to the raceing. Lorenzo was followed till the fifth lap by Márquez, Dovizioso and Iannone. Yes, Marc Márquez, starting from 13th, after a phenomenal start and a first lap parade was immediately on the rear wheel of Lorenzo. Speaking about the start. Andrea Iannone’s start according to the race direction, wasn’t a jump start. Well, looking at the footage, we are still not convinced at about that... Valentino Rossi was 9th in the first laps causing kind of an excitement and anxiety for his fans. But he managed the first tyre consumption really well (once again) so soon he started to close up.

Briefly

MotoGP

This is how we arrived to the half of the distance, when Iannone, Mรกrquez, Dovizioso, Pedrosa and Rossi all fought for the podium spots. First it was Dovi getting out of the fight due to a technical problem - the rear sprocket has been broken - then Mรกrquez made yet another mistake, so his race ended in the gravel again. Despite the shoulder injury, Iannone brought the Ducati to the podium, as Rossi, just like last year, finished third.

Emotion

It was all about the „Yellow Power“ in Mugello. It’s so nice to see all these fans adoring their idol, their king, their God as they consider. Shame they don’t wanna show any respect to other winners, especially if it’s Jorge Lorenzo. The ‘boo-ing’ is really not fancy, neither singing the Italian anthem during the Spanish one for the winner. Maybe next time we can see Valentino Rossi cooling down his crowd, even a little bit maybe.

MAKING HISTORY Again we could see a super exciting Moto3 race with six riders finishing between less than four tens. Miguel Oliveira was leading the race most of the time even if right behind him everything was so tight. He could stay calm which helped him winning his first ever GP race by just 0.071 second ahead of Danny Kent. This victory means even more as Oliviera is the first Portuguese rider to ever win a World Championship race. Romano Fenati, who was in the middle of the battle till the last corner, was clever enough to use some slipstream to arrive on the lowest spot of the podium at his home race.
