Three times world champion, Nelson Piquet was a special guest at the celebration of the 30th Hungarian Grand Prix as the winner of the maiden race in the communist block back in 1986. He spoke to a group of local journalists starting with this topic, but then all ended really really off topic. Piquet was cruelly honest, sometimes only cruel. But he was the same also during his active career, brutally honest, not a typical PR-ready guy. Attention! Only this is not for the faint-hearted! This is already the 30th Grand Prix in Budapest. How do you remember to the first one? It’s always good to travel to a new track, because the conditions are equal, as no one knows anything. I was pleased to come, especially because I won immediately and then a year later again. I was sitting in the best car fighting for the world championship title with my teammate, Nigel Mansell. Finally, of course, Alan Prost became the world champion, because we were fighting too hard with each other. We won nine out of the sixteen races, but still we lost the championship‌ Nevertheless, it was good to come to an unknown country, learning about a new culture, and also the track is fantastic. Very hard with this great sequence of corners: leftright-left-right, the straights are short and it is difficult to overtake, but we had good races here. What was the most surprising in Hungary? The beautiful girls. And the socialist cars? No, more like the happy people, same as the Brazilians. We come here in a good period. We always loved to come here. There were tracks that we despised, but Hungary is nice.

Interview

The Hungarian GP in 1986 was the first F1 race in the communist block

Formula 1

Do you still see happy people here? The truth is that I do not have too much time to look around and in addition I came with my wife so it is harder like this... One of your sons has a Hungarian name, Laszlo. How did this idea come? I realize that it is pronounced the same in every language, not like the English John, which is Joao in our country. Laszlo is Laszlo everywhere, even in Brazil and England. It’s legendarily difficult to overtake at the Hungaroring, but even so, you passed Ayrton Senna from outside. Because Senna was a wanker, a terrible pilot, it was easy to pass him. You also had the time to show your middle finger at him? Did you see any of the overtaking? Have you seen the previous laps? If you look carefully, you can see that the first time I tried to overtake from inside, but he pushed me to the dirty side of the track. On the second time he tried to do the same. But instead of going right, I came from the left and he did not expect that. He always raced very dirty in his career. He won the Formula 3 Championship because he hit Martin Brundle, in Brands Hatch, in the last race. He did the same with Prost in 1990 to win the championship. I do not agree with this. In motorsport, it needs to be a clean race. You want to be champion? It's all right. But race clean. He wasn’t clean at all. That's why I pointed the finger at him. But that moment we slowed down, so I could leave the steering-wheel. I have the photos of it in my house.

Interview

For example, when I raced in the British Formula 3, in England it was very cold in March, when we had the first races. When we got the engine warmed up, it could easily get dirty and when I went out to the grid, it overheated. I was really pissed off, because I blew all my money and I could not race either. So what did I do? I set up a tent over the car, I stuck a tube into it and three hours before the race I started to blow warm air into it, thus warming up not only the engine but the whole car as well: the gearbox, the brakes, the oil - and the tyres. After the first lap I lead by three seconds and after the second one I already had a 6 seconds gap. The key was the warm tyres, so later we warmed them up in the camion on a special fryer. In total I won 14 races out of the 17 rounds. Just to clarify: it was you then who invented the tyre-warming manoeuvre? The tyre warming, the weight and power This would be your suggestion to the youth, to learn the basics? They don’t need it. I was an engineer, I was working in it before I started to race go-karts. Also today I tinker with my cars, because I love it. Car racing has changed a lot, mostly because of the techniques. I’m not saying that it is the worst as we can see fantastic innovations, like there is nothing better than the gear on the steering-wheel, but this made the drivers life so much easier. If you would begin your career now at the age of nineteen, then ... ... I would have much more sex!

Formula 1

Do you still dream of racing? I'd rather call it a nightmare! Why? Because of the big accidents? Oh, no, I just do not like the nostalgia. Look, when you are twenty or thirty years old, all is good and nice. Recently in Austria before the race I made some demo laps in an old Brabham, I was just thinking about how I was able to drive this shit for so many races. As a young man I did not have to care about anything, just racing, but being older I think back completely differently. Going back to Hungary. In 1987 it was announced here that you signed with Lotus for the next years. Why did you choose a team where you didn’t have a realistic chance to win? As I said, the mood at Williams was really bad and Lotus offered me three times more money. And this was enough? Of course! Listen, what are the two things that a man needs in life? What is on the first place? Girls? That’s right. And what is the second one? Money? You see? You can do it. Even you can be a Formula 1 driver! What is it like to be the father of the first ever Formula E champion? Great! Especially after all the abomination that had happened to us in the F1. Could you tell us something about it? One of the biggest scandals in Formula 1 history came from it. It is a very simple story.

Interview

In the season of 2008 Renault put so much pressure on Nelsinho that they convinced him to purposely hit the wall in Singapore in order for Alonso to win. When my son told me all of this I was very upset, but at first I kept the events a secret. Nelsinho had a valid contract for the 2009 season as well, and when Flavio came out with his intention to replace him with Grosjean, who was the son of the team lawyer, I told him: “If you go through with it I will ruin you!” To which his response was: “Are you threatening me?” I merely told him that I was not making threats, only that I can manage it that he would be banned from Formula 1, and so I did. I told the whole story to Max Mosely, the FIA president at the time. We proved the truth, and Flavio was kicked out of Formula1. It is this simple. Did Alonso know that Nelsinho would crash into the wall in his favour? I will not say. So basically yes. I do not know. When did you find out the truth? Three days after the race. Nelsinho called me with the intention of telling me a long story. He said that the whole weekend went by with them persuading him to do it, to which I responded: “Have you gone mad? This is a sport!” They completely brainwashed him though, he was young, manipulative and impressionable, and thus he did it. Luckily Charlie Whiting the race director was my mechanic for seven years at Brabham, and when the case came out I told him in Brazil what they had done with Nelsinho, the whole madness. He was very surprised and taken aback, but said we had to prove it, and so we did.

Who was responsible for persuading him to do it? Flavio – the biggest douche ever. He is convinced that he is a God, and that he can do anything he wishes without any consequences. However, we all saw what happened in the end‌ Have you spoken to him since? Of course not. I do not think that I caused him much happiness, but it was unpleasant for me as well. Even though I told him that he could either fire Nelsinho, and I would cause a huge scandal, or everything would stay the same and he would get off with no consequences. He fired him, although by firing a driver during a season they are basically running his career. I asked Flavio not to do it, but he started going on about how he is a businessman and that he has to act as one does, and I just told him that I would ruin him again. How do you spend your days nowadays? Twenty-two years ago I started a satellitetelecommunication company, which is specifically for cars. At present I now have 136 cars in my system. This is what I do. It was around one and a half decades ago that you said that with this company you would make more money than Michael Schumacher. Is this the case? It is. My company is worth an estimated half a billion dollars. It has been worth more, but the currency conversion rate changed as well. One cannot even spend that much! Oh but they can! On what? The city in which I live is full of hookers.

E AND LUCK

Briefly

Formula 1

The victory was already decided after the start, as championship leader, Lewis Hamilton made a perfect start, meanwhile Nico Rosberg were stuck, immediately losing his chances for the win. Hamilton lead the whole race with a certain gap, his advantage decreased only during the Virtual Safety Car period, but he was able to manage this situation also. Rosberg finally regained his second position, but he gave Hamilton a 28 points advantage in the overall standings. The biggest drama of the day happened at the end of the race, when the right rear tyre of Sebastian Vettel – who was third that time – exploded in the penultimate lap. Vettel and the Ferrari had a brave strategy for the race pitting him only once, which allowed the German to obtain the third position, until the tyre failure. The 4-times world champion declared his anger after the race. 'Things like that are not allowed to happen, full stop. If it happens 200 metres earlier, I am not standing here now - it is unacceptable.' he said. On Friday Rosberg had a similar tyre failure, but Pirelli fended off the complaint saying that the tactics of Ferrari were too risky. The third place finally went to Romain Grosjean, who had not had a champagne since the Indian GP in 2013.

I'm really happy with that one. I had great pace in the car and the balance felt fantastic. If anything it got better through the race and I never felt under pressure. After the stops I took it a bit easy on the out laps and Nico closed up but I always had a comfortable gap. A massive thank you to everyone here and back at the factories for all their hard work. The car was awesome all weekend and the crew did a great job. And what a great crowd. Loads of noise and plenty of British flags out there too which I really appreciate, so thanks to all of you for your support. Lewis HAMILTON

Unfortunately I messed up the start. Maybe the extra warm up lap had an influence on that - we need to find out what exactly happened but, in any case, I definitely have to improve that for Monza. Because of this I had to play catch up, which worked out well to a point. I managed to be second again and also was able to close the gap to Lewis a bit - but I didn't get a chance to come within overtaking distance. He deserved the win today.

Today’s result is wonderful. It’s good for the team and for myself of course. Yesterday’s good qualifying result put a smile on my face but today was an unbelievable race.

I drove with my heart

today and pushed 100 % throughout the race. I did some great overtaking manoeuvres and I was really closing the gap on Seb. It’s very unfortunate he had that puncture and it was a bit of a scary moment just being behind. I felt very emotional during the last lap of the race! It’s a great feeling today. Romain GROSJEAN

Circuit Strategy by UBS This one of the toughest races to manage strategically. The changeable conditions, the challenge of the daunting circuit, strong chance of a safety car and high tyre wear make. Spa has many fast corners and the loads on the tyres are high. As the track is set over a large area with lots of elevation changes, there is a chance that it can be raining on one part of the circuit and not on the rest. It is easy to overtake here on the long straights, which means that it is possible to recover any lost ground.

UPS AND DOWN

Text: Niki Kovács / Photos: Lotus F1 Team

He is still not even 30, but has already seen a lot of life. He had his ups and downs, but the phrase ’give up’ is not in his dictionary. We had the chance to have a short talk with him before the Hungarian GP, when getting back on the podium looked like a far dream. We do not quite agree with his viewpoint related to the thrill in Formula 1 nowadays, but we definitely like his way of thinking about life. The beginning of your Formula 1 career was quite eventful, let’s say. Yes, indeed. After 2009 I would never thought about to come back to Formula 1, but I kept following my dream and suddenly I became Kimi’s teammate. We didn’t have too many conversations during those years, but I learned things from him. After your comeback you didn’t have to wait too long for your first podium. What was the feeling like to be there? I remember, that when I was going to the podium, I was thinking that when I was a kid, I was watching Mansell, Prost and Senna going to the podium and that time it was me going to be there and maybe some kids were thinking the same. Mechanical failure, accidents, punctures, and another two podiums, your season was already really exciting when we arrived to the Belgium GP and that scary multiple incident you caused. Yes, it was a missed braking point… I’m glad that Fernando didn’t get injured there. That was a moment of my career that taught me a lot and helped me to become who I am now. Nevertheless, it was a difficult time to go through.

NS

INTERVIEW

Interview

How could you elaborate on that period? Well, it’s not a secret that since that day I have been working with a psychologist specialising in sport and top athletes. There’s a lot of people in the sporting world, especially in the Olympic Games or in professional rugby and football teams that are working with psychologists to succeed in overcoming and understand their problems. Remaining at all the excitement of 2012 in the summer you got married with Marion. We all now, that she is a reporter. As an expert can she give you advice how to handle the media? Yes, she gave me a few pieces of advice in the past how to do things. A year later your first son, Sacha was born. Has it changed you in any way? As a driver no, but as a man, yes. If you become a father you don’t do things anymore for you, but you do it for your family. After a bad race, when you arrive home on Sunday night and you see your child it helps you to move on the things easier. They give you energy that you didn’t have before. To be honest my second son, Simon is giving us hard time during the nights. But it’s part of the game. Anyway, when you put your helmet on, you cannot think of your family, otherwise it’s better to stop racing. I’m here to race, to achieve the things that I was born for, like trying to become world champion and I need to give it my 100 percent. How do you see the situation of young French drivers in the lower series? Maybe do you want to see your sons amongst them? No, I have just been giving a tennis racket to Sacha, saying ’go play tennis’.

Formula 1

Interview

Motorsport is dangerous and as a father you don’t want to see your son doing dangerous things. But clearly he will decide what he wants to do. So, yes, if he, they want to be a driver or rider, I will give them a chance, but I won’t push them. About the French youngsters. a few are just coming through the lower series, like Pierre Gasly in GP2 and hopefully one day they will get a chance to arrive in F1. How is your relationship with Pastor? He is too loud. I hate being his neighbour. He has a very South American style [he laughs]. Well, French people are not quiet either… I’m a French driver, but as a person, I’m more Swiss, I think. Also I’m always on time, he is always late [he laughs again]. What about other motorsports? Do you like MotoGP, for example? Yes, last year I was able to go to the French GP and I also met Lorenzo at the Race of Champions in 2012. They are just crazy. I’m big fan of bikes, but I never tried to ride on a circuit. I know that I would probably kill myself. I’m also happy that my compatriot, Johann Zarco is leading now the Moto2 championship. You are a huge fan of gastronomy too. Do you have any plans in the future to publish a cook book or to open a restaurant? Cook book, not, but to open a restaurant, yes. I would do it in Paris. Is there any „forbidden fruit” I mean any food that is really unhealthy, but you like it a lot and cannot resist? We have to go back to my Swiss origin, I love fondue. When I start, I cannot stop eating it anymore. So when I get tempted once or twice a year, I have to cycle and train more the day after.

Formula 1

Interview

Formula 1

There is a lot of criticism that F1 is going in the wrong direction. Do you agree? I don’t think Formula 1 is boring. Yes, a few years ago it was more exciting. In 2012 we had five different winners in the first five races [actually 7 in 7 races – the ed.], but we have never seen as many overtakes as today. Maybe in terms of communication, we didn’t take the corner right, but if you see F1 as a product itself, the races are quite fun. Yes, we drivers also complained a little bit, but we like to complain, that is a driver’s life. Only thing I would like is to go back to the level of car performance we had in 2012 and 2013. The cars were more powerful, so when you were going in a corner, sometimes you were like ‘should I go or not’, which is less the case today. As we mentioned already, you had many ups and downs in the previous years. Yeah, it’s not easy, but at a high level sport it’s never easy. Every time you do something you need to be hard. It would be great to be back on the podium and be able to fight for the victory, it gives you a lot of motivation. In 2012 I was close to winning a few times, but then for example in Valencia the engine decided to go another way. Sometimes it’s not easy to keep going, but on the other hand tough times teach you a lot. So what did you learn last year for example? A lot! Keeping the frustration down, don’t work all the time. I learned some new skills how to drive the car, which was important, and you know, that was the first year I was the team leader.

Interview

Formula 1

Following our interview the podium finish came earlier than maybe anyone expected. After missing this feeling for 30 races, Romain could enjoy again the taste of that special champagne. During the press conference at Spa-Francorchamps he envisioned also his last time on the podium.

'Probably this was one of my best races ever. I still remember the feelings in Austin, a long time ago, but I also remember that I was a bit drunk at the press conference! We had a little bit too much champagne on the podium with Seb.'

Honestly I was waiting for a different race. Jorge improved a lot during the race. I was able to follow him but on the mid race I was struggling a little. At the and I had to attack and I tried to surprise him. On the last lap a pushed really hard. Following a lot of laps Jorge I could see again that the Yamaha bikes have a really good potential, especially in corner exit. Marc MĂ RQUEZ

In the warm up I had the first crash of the season, I think because of a defective tyre. So it was a little bit difficult for me to fight against my mind and recover the confidence fot the race, but I did it and I also made a really good start. I was very fast and constant, but I couldn’t escape from Marc. My lack of energy at the end was the key for the race. Also when he passed me I made some mistakes.

During the Moto2 start procedure the rain was still present, but not enough to messup the race. It doesn’t mean that we didn’t see an exciting battle, oh no. Six different riders lead the 25 lap race that was declared wet, but the majority of riders decided to start on slicks as the track were drying from the first moments. At the beginning of the last lap the pole-man, Álex Rins extended his lead to 6 tenths of a second, which was enough to secure his win after Johann Zarco ran wide. After a really aggressive riding the Frenchman finished second ahead of Franco Morbidelli who grabbed his first podium finish ever. Even if this was Álex Rins’ first ever Moto2 victory, he couldn’t celebrate on the podium with champagne according the U.S.A. law. He is only 19. Although he had to wait a bit for his first middle class win, he is constantly fast in his rookie season. Thanks to this he is ahead of now Tito Rabat in the overall standings at 2nd position.

If we say, that none of the Top3 finishers could stand on the podium before and championship leader, Danny Kent finished out of the points as he crossed the line in 21th place without a crash, we still didn’t say anything. The hero of the day was the 18 years old Livio Loi. Half an hour before the pit lane opened, the rain had arrived. Light rain, but enough to made the track wet.

The race was declared wet and th lined up to the grid with wet tyre Livio Loi while John McPhee and Ă–ettl decided to pit and change t back to the slick ones. Doing this the rain stopped and it was only of time, when it would be dry aga

he riders es, except Philipp their tyres s because a matter ain.

Finally this was the key moment for these guys to finish ahead of all their opponents at a really crazy race with lots of lappings and pit stops. Loi won his first ever grand prix by 39 seconds ahead of McPhee and Ă–ettl.

MotoGP

This season in Moto3 there has been a clear leader, the 2015 championship is his to take as he seems above and beyond all others. Mature, sometimes three or four years older than other riders in his category, Kent has never looked better and after a few seasons of not fulfilling the expectations, going to Moto2 and back to Moto3, most likely the Brit will be crowned Champ before the end of the season. Confident, coherent, pleasant, he sat and chatted without a PR or team manager hovering above, as they trust him, it's easy to understand why. After a few seconds, we started off chatting about travelling‌

SUPER KENT Text: Tammy Gorali (MotoGP commentator Sport 5, Israel) / Photos: 2SNAP, Niki KovĂĄcs

Interview

Do you like to travel? I do but it's a bit difficult when you have only one week between races and you just feel like staying at home and training. Do you still live with your parents? Yes, I do. So do you train at home? Yes, I go to the gym, or run alone or with friends, sometimes I go to Luxemburg with the Sponsor and they organize the trainer for me and staff like that. Who do you like to train with? It varies, so no one in particular, training is never fun or easy but it's always good to have someone if you go cycling for example. I have a few friends I like to have with me. I also have a friend who races in the BSB Joey Rive. We train together and sometimes with MX. I haven't trained with Toseland for quite a long time but we speak a lot on the phone as he is busy working for BT, and now he does a lot for his music career. How did James Toseland help you with your training? Basically, his knowledge. He has been through what I am going through, he has been in the paddock for so many years. Regarding the training he was known to be one of the fittest guys on a motorcycle so he taught me what to do and what not to do. You mentioned cycling and gym - most riders hate the gym and spend their time motor crossing. Our job is motorbikes but a part of it is fitness, to be fast you now have to be fit, and with the demanding bike you must be fit and strong.

MotoGP

Interview

MotoGP

So I do a little of everything: running, cycling, gym, personal training, and squash - all the kind of things which can help. I never tried wall climbing and, even though I heard it might help with building up arm muscles, I never suffered from it so if I am not struggling with something I would not try to improve on it. If I tried to work on my arm muscles I might get my arms pumped, but if I have no difficulty with something then I tend to stay away from it. You seem very calculated. Yes, you have to be and I think a lot of it comes from the hard work at the gym, the stronger your mind is the better you are. For example, the reaction needed with squash when the balls come in and you are running around, I think all this hard work that I have done in the gym has helped me this year to achieve the results I have received. Are you thinking about the future? Of course I am thinking about the future, I placed myself in a situation now where my dreams can become a reality - that being me leading the championship. So I try to keep winning races, leading the championship. Obviously with the results people come and try to jump on the bandwagon, I talk to them, but still I concentrate on this year and thus, next year will fall into place. Therefore, I barely have to worry about next year and I just worry about this one. You sometimes seem to keep a calm poker face... Phased, as a lot of riders can get worked up when there are only 5 minutes left but I think you only do more damage by getting stressed, because what can you do? So for me the best way is to relax, just stay calm.

I try to kee don't want all of this no we have a problem I do the problem is, or if we the engine I don't want job - I am not the mech do my bit and let my me later on if it comes abou will know what the prob go and ask, I just look fo relaxed. I have worke talk, but he is still my riv the track but on the trac other. He can see all my data, we did not have problem Therefore, I have not loo they looked at ours to s improve. MotoGP

MotoGP

Has being annihilated in the past helped you a little bit? Yes, it only made me stronger. We try not to make too many mistakes, like at Le Mans where we messed up. We had our hard times in the GP, we were not gifted with the silver spoon, we had to work hard though hard times, and this year I got the full package: a good team, and a good bike. They put all their efforts into me and I am not their number 2 rider. Our team gave us all the same package and it only made us stronger. You mentioned number two and Aki Ajo said that he never treated you as number two and that he treats all riders the same. Yes, he treats everyone the same, but he still has his number one group. Marc Márquez had this group, Sandro Cortese, Jack Miller, Luis Salom - they all had the number one chief mechanic and support team which makes me and everyone else think that everyone fighting for the championship had that group. I was never the number one rider, maybe he did not believe in me. I cannot answer that, maybe he gave us same machinery, but for a rider's head you think, ‘He is getting better than you’ and that's not good. I can prove that all the riders who had that specific tech group were fighting for, or won a championship. It also happened with the Estrella Galicia team. Now, let us take look at Rins and Álex Márquez this year. Márquez won the championship and was the number one rider in the team for Honda. Obviously with his brother, HRC were perhaps a little pressured to back his brother a bit more. You could see throughout the season just how much more successful Rins has been compared to Márquez now that Rins is number one rider in a team, or perhaps he just has the package to go out there and win races.

Interview

Do you have support from home? My family comes to most European races, my mum, dad, brother and sister. My team and sponsors are really good to me and they make sure I have all I need. I am really happy with everything this year. The team is very good and we are like a big family who wants to win. It's a long year, and we spend most of the year in this paddock, so the more friends you have, the more fun it is. Who are your friends in the paddock? I have a lot of friends here, like Karel Hanika and Jack Miller. We get along well and have a lot of fun. Sometimes I go out to Spain and stay there with Jack, but we also train together with Karel. How is the support at home? Support is good, you almost have to expect it as we had 3 wins which has not happened since Barry Sheene in 1977. Therefore, there was more coverage and my fan base got bigger this year. It comes with the job when things go well. However, when it doesn't, people forget about you. I see some people tweet me, when we have a good weekend, but then they contradict themselves when we had a bad one - they think you are rubbish. When you are doing well they are your friends and when you are not, they are not your friends. It's the same for everyone in the paddock, and it's the same in life.

Then he shows me the fridge with all of his team sponsor's drinks, explaining the different flavours and smiles and says, ‘You see? It’s real!’ - after I said something smart about it. He recommends the one with the Ginger and as I take the can and leave I cannot help but think that in this paddock, nice guys actually finish first. Not sure where we will see him next year, which category and team, but it's clear Kent needs to feel supported, trusted and comfortable. I hope he can find that, as when he has the full package we get to be very lucky spectators.

Briefly

MotoGP

After 11 rounds the MotoGP championship restarts from zero. Following the mistakes and bad lucks of the first races, Jorge Lorenzo won his fifth race this year and equals Valentino Rossi as leader in the overall standings. The race itself wasn’t that exciting as we were all hoping, as Lorenzo was untouchable during the race. Marc Mårquez could keep his rhythm for 8 laps, but then the Mallorcan opened a gap. This means that Lorenzo has led across the line on every lap in each of his five MotoGP wins in 2015. During the practices Valentino Rossi was hoping that a better grid position could help him in the first part of the race, so we was quite happy with his 3rd position after the qualifying. But it was all to be for nothing though, as he found himself down in fifth at the first corner. By the time he could climb back 3rd, Lorenzo and Mårquez were already almost 3 second ahead with a better performance, so the Doctor had nothing to left but keep this position.

MotoGP

During all the weekend I had a really good base set up and I felt very strong. When I made a pole position, normally I can do a good race too. This is a really important race. I knew that already, so I had a bit of pressure on me. I knew inside that this was the occasion to win the race and recover more points than in Indy. With Vale we start now an other championship together from zero like the first race. At one point I had a disadvantage of 29 points and we are here now, so I must concentrate and at least finish on the podium even if I cannot win. Jorge LORENZO

Quote

MotoGP

I expected a better race and a better place from myself. I made a bad start, but I didn’t have the rhythm either. Jorge came back from the summer break in a great shape, and he had two fantastic races. Also in Indy, because he could fight with Marc until the last lap. I know that for fight with him and for the championship till Valencia, I have to be stronger and try to go faster. It won’t be easy, because when Jorge is in a great form like in Jerez and here, it’s difficult to stop him. Valentino ROSSI

Oooops

MotoGP Lorenzo’s crew were extremely waiting for their fifth victory of the year. They really hoped that it would happen in Assen, and they were prepared for that. How do we know this? The board that was made to celebrate the next win has been presented finally in Brno. But with a ‘small’ mistake. The fifth one arrived, but not in a row.

If you are racing in Moto2 and in every five minute you get the question ‘with which team are you planning to go to MotoGP next year’ it means that you are doing well in the championship. And Johann Zarco was asked lot of times about his possible future in MotoGP. Not without a reason… In Brno he extended his lead in the standings to 79 points thanks to his 4th win of the season. Thomas Lüthi had the best start of the race, but it wasn’t enough for a podium finish either. Zarco took the lead on lap 2, then also Tito Rabat and the rookie Álex Rins overtook the Swiss. From halfway of the race the gap between the first three was already one-one second which means that we didn’t see more actions fighting for these position. With fourth position Álex Márquez claimed his best result of the season.

SWEET MAIDEN VICTORY The race day started with some dramatic moments, as two multiply (four riders) crashes happened in the first lap of the Moto3 battle, which caused that the original race was red flagged. The new distance was reduced to 12 laps, so lot of riders switched to the soft tyre option. After the first 7 laps The race itself was a frantic sprint which saw 11 riders break away at the front and open up a 2 second gap after the first 7 laps. Niccol贸 Antonelli took the lead with 2 laps remaining and after nobody could stop him to claim his first GP victory, and his first podium finish on his 62nd attempt. His compatriot Enea Bastianini fought his way back from 15th on the grid to claim second. South African Brad Binder finished third. Championship leader Danny Kent had a bad luck again, as he remained without a new set of tyres for the re-started race, so he had no chance to fight with the top guys and finished only seventh.

Interview

MotoGP

WHAT IS NEXT? Text: KiKo / Photos: Niki Kov谩cs, Monster Yamaha Tech3

The 24-year-old boy from Oxford cannot recall ever wanting to become anything other than a motorcyclist. He is currently running his third MotoGP season, and stands in fifth position as the best satellite rider in the championship. Along with his teammates Pol Espargar贸 and Nakusaga Katsuyuki, he won the legendary 8 hours endurance race in Suzuka. However, even after this it was still not the time to lay back and take it easy as for a while it was unsure where he would go on. After a long negotiation just before his home race, it was decided that he would continue with his current team Monster Yamaha Tech3 also in 2016.

Interview

MotoGP

Have you always wanted to be a racer or did you have any other dreams before? Since I was 6 years old I just wanted to ride motorcycles. I think if you ask any of my school teachers, my mum or my dad they will answer the same. When I played at home it was never with anything but motorbikes and bicycles. I remember that I always used to wear my dad’s motocross helmet around the garden on my bicycle, so it’s always been a huge passion. So we know that your father was a motocross rider. How did you then end up in road racing? To be honest, it was his decision. He tried to push me in this direction. He’d been involved for so long in motocross. He had the talent, but because of injury and lack of money etc., he couldn’t develop any success. He knew John Menuls, when he was in motocross, and he said that he was quite good, but not really at a high level, so he switched to road racing and was immediately successful. My dad was like ‘let’s try and see if you are competitive or not’. I hated it, honestly, I hated every minute, but they pushed me to stay there and practice. I suppose at the beginning I didn’t enjoy it because I was slow. I wasn’t fast, I couldn’t get any results, and when you are 13 years old all you want is to win. Then at the end of 2004 I started to get some success, so I said ok, maybe we can try another year, and that was when Alberto Puig called me to join the Spanish Championship. From there everything was crazy and now I’m in MotoGP, so that was the right decision.

Interview

Motorsport is dang Have you ever been this? Personally I have no bit and I’m sure my d he never shows it. [B his son at every race but my dad was able that road racing was which I don’t unders do. Now my mom kn I think he played his doesn’t believe him Yeah, it’s dangerous and we are used to i get back up, you try that scares you is if y that doesn’t do norm unpredictable. That’s horse for example, b it’s going to do.

I know that you are What happens whe How can you get th Yes, I’m very self-crit a mistake I blame m ashamed let’s say, if example I crashed d in Suzuka. It was a sm crash I’ve been alrea in that corner, becau there than anybody, in faster’. But I could and at the end clear me and I took that q ’don’t worry, it’s ok’, to learn from these k learn from every mis angry with myself. A mistake is only a m

That annoyed quite personally. They said , but I was like no, I need kind of things. I try to stake. I’m not sad, but I get

mistake if you do it twice.

MotoGP

Interview

What do you think about Formula 1? Is it better than MotoGP? I love the attention to details in Formula 1. Sometimes I think it’s too much, too excessive, but that’s the type of person that I am. I got to watch the Monacan GP and be just above the garage with the headphones and staff. Every time they go out they are talking to the driver to do this and that, warm up this disc or that one. Sometimes I think that’s a little but too much, but what I like is that every time before they go out they lower the car onto the weight scales, so they know the balance of the car. The fact that someone spends 2 hours to clean and polish the car before the race just for aerodynamics, I think, is crazy, but I love that type of attention to details. There are only two things I don’t like; the huge difference between the cars and the huge amount of radio communication. I think they really should get rid of the radios, because there is no human error anymore. Like in Canada, between Lewis and Nico there was less than one second, but they knew exactly the problem of the other, like Lewis had more fuel than Nico, Nico’s breaks were too hot for him to attack, so basically they were driving with one second between each other. Lewis knew that Nico couldn’t attack him, which makes the races so boring. But from the technical aspect, I love it. What is your strongest and weakest point on the race track? My strongest point is probably my weakest one too. I like to analyse everything, which helps me a lot, but can also be quite negative as well, such as when I start to overanalyse a situation, like in Assen. I was angry with myself as Andrea Dovizioso was in front of me and I was only thinking how I can pass him and also stay in front.

MotoGP

Interview

So I lost quite a few opportunities because I was thinking like, if I pass here, he will come back in the next straight, so it’s better not to take any risk here, but try another place. But the problem was that I let the chances go by instead of just taking the risk and overtaking before. However, I also improved the bike a lot, especially in the race situations this year because I analyse everything. Yes, you are doing a great job this year, but still the first podium hasn’t come yet. I am very pleased what I’m achieving this year. I managed to change a lot of people’s perceptions, doing a good job at the minute. The question is from where I am now, what is next? That’s what I’m asking myself. And unfortunately nothing. If I can finish the race in 5th together with Iannone for example, there is nothing more for me to do. This kind of a situation is a bit depressing, as we all know the difference between the factory and non-factory bikes. Like in Formula 1. If you are not sitting in one of the two top cars, you cannot do anything. And I reached the limit of my package. This is why I’m really excited to see what the changes in the regulations bring for the next year. The packages will be closer which can help the satellite riders in my position a lot. Do you have any good friends in the paddock? Inside MotoGP probably not so much, but for example I know Nicky Hayden quite well from 2006, when I came into the world championship and he won that year, so we had a lot of launches inside of the hospitality. So to be now riding against him and chatting about dirt tracks and all those kind of things seem a bit surreal. When I arrived here I was an English guy inside a Spanish team, so he said to go to his motorhome whenever I’m bored or just want to talk.

MotoGP

Interview

MotoGP

What is the biggest lesson that MotoGP has given you? To be patient. You can’t override a MotoGP bike, especially the Yamaha. There is a way to ride this bike and you need to learn to make the package as good as possible and to ride the bike to its limits, but not more. You can pass the limit on a 125cc or a Moto2 bike and still you can have success, but not with a MotoGP one. Maybe it’s because of the weight or the power, but if you pass the limit, you will crash and it will hurt. If you ride angry it is the same. Somehow the bike knows it. How can we image you in your spare time? I train a lot. I love training as it’s a huge passion of mine. I ride motocross, I still have my own track, but to be honest, the biggest thing is just to do nothing and separate myself from all the schedules, that’s why I’m living in Andorra. Really few people there, no stress, no traffic etc. And when I’m home in the UK, I just walk with my dog. Where do you see yourself in 30 years? Wow, I’ll be 55, Oh my God! I would love to be in nice warm place somewhere riding my bicycle and sitting with a couple of friends that also like to ride bicycles, and drinking coffee like the Italians. Taking it a little bit easy, but still having something to do, because even when I retire, I don’t want to stop, so I’ll still have some interests. But hopefully I’ll be at a stage where in the morning or in the afternoon I’ll have some free time and I go with my buddies, we talk complete bullshit, but we are happy. How about kids and family? Yeah, that’s a scary one. I mean the word ‘wife’ and the word ‘baby’ scares me at the moment. I know, that I think completely different now than I did five years ago, so then I expect in another five years I’ll change again, so ask me again that time.

LUCK AND HARD LUCK Text: Niki Kovรกcs / Photos: 2SNAP, Yamaha, Pramac Ducati

Briefly

MotoGP

In dry conditions Valentino Rossi did not show an extraordinary pace during the practices, but on the wet he was the fastest during the warm up session, so all the Rossi fans were praying for more rain. And they got it just second before the original start that finally was delayed after all the riders came into the pit to chance their bikes. Although Jorge Lorenzo made the best start, Rossi were leading already on lap 2 and started to build up a gap. The only one who could go with him was Marc Mรกrquez, till his crash on lap 13. The hero of the day was Danilo Petrucci who stood on the podium for first time in his MotoGP career keeping behind his brand-mate, Andrea Dovizioso. In the last laps Petrux reduced his gap from 7 to 1.7 seconds behind Rossi, but the Doctor still had enough reserve to secure his first ever win in Silverstone. Loser of the day was Lorenzo again, who currently lies 12 behind Rossi in the championship. In the last laps while he was catching Dovizioso his visor fogged up. This is not the first time that he loses important points because of his helmet.

!

Only two circuits left in the present calendar where Valentino Rossi has never won yet: Austin and Aragon.

Quote

MotoGP

This was a very difficult race in wet conditions. On the grid I was scared as we had the worst condition: cold, light rain and we had to start with the slick tyres. So I was happy that on the warm up lap it started to rain again. My Yamaha was fantastic on wet. This 12 points gap are so important, but psychological advantage? Not a lot! Unfortunately. Jorge is a really hard opponent. He is strong. It’s important to stay on top and reopen the gap on a track where on the paper Jorge can beat me, but that’s it. Valentino ROSSI

Quote

After his presence at the pre-event press conference in Mugello, we could enjoy again the spirit of Petrux. Normally we don’t do, but this time we have to share his speech a bit longer.

Sincerely I was hoping for the rain, because yesterday went so bad with P18. When I saw the rain, I was like, ’OK, maybe we can do some mess’. I pushed really hard, then one moment I was behind Pedrosa and Lorenzo. I’ve never seen this before, only on PlayStation. So now what can I do? – I asked myself. It was really difficult to pass them. When I was third I was scared to crash, as I was already on the podium and I didn’t want to lose it. Then Dovi came, so I thought that he could help to have a better rhythm again. Then Marc crashed and suddenly Valentino was closer and closer to me.

MotoGP

Quote

I was scared again, it’s not usual that you gain some tenths on Valentino. And it’s not a comfortable situation. With two laps to go I saw that I created a little bit of gap before Dovi. I think, I made a mistake in every corner on the last lap. In the last corner I just started to laugh. Now I wake up in the bed. But then I’m still sleeping I think.

In the box, they said, they were scared, because I looked like to crash in every corner. I’m a bit worried now, because at the beginning of the season Gigi [Dall’Igna – Ed.] asked me to finish 8th in the championship. Now I’m 8th and I know Gigi, so when I’ll see him again, he will ask me to finish 6th, and I don’t want that.

MotoGP

With Jorge I was scared about his reaction after the race and not during. So I tried to stay as far from him as possible.

Last week we trained together with Vale on the ranch and we touched in one corner. I pushed him off the track, so I finished in front of him. After I thought that was the last time that we trained together. Today I didn’t want to repeat it, clearly, as I was already happy with this great result. Danilo PETRUCCI

Like four weeks ago, the rain made everything even more exciting again. This time the Moto2 was the first race of the day. Moments before the start the track still was not suitable for slick tyres, in addition the rain began to drizzle again, so the race was declared wet. However, this condition didn’t last long. The track started to dry up, so the wet tyres were heating up lap by lap making the rider’s life more and more tough. Johann Zarco managed the best he first critical point, when he could build up a nearly eight seconds lead in only five laps. The second place was in Tito Rabat’s hands for long, but then he couldn’t manage the drop of the rear tyre, so with 5 laps to go Álex Rins made the move and overtook him. At the end there was a small chance that Rins could catch also Zarco, but it didn’t happen. Rabat secured the third place from his teammate, Álex Márquez, who is finally beginning to pick up the rhythm of the category.

After two really difficult and unlucky races, Danny Kent is on the top again. The last battle of the day was clearly a wet race, a really wet one. This time the primary excitement was who could manage to stay on their feet on the track turning into a lake. The Czech Jakub Kornfeil reached his best result ever finishing second. The guys didn’t leave us without some real overtakes and fight, as Niccoló Antonelli, Andrea Locatelli and Francesco Bagnaia brought as some thrill. From three of them finally only Antonelli saw the chequered flag.

Now I have 17 tattoos as I count separately the tattoos on my right arm. The first one was my family name, Salom, then I got Luis and then the Virgin with the roses, because I really love the roses. The first one was a present for my 16th or 17th birthday, because I really really wanted to the have a tattoo. Already when I was younger, but honestly I don’t know why. I mean in our family nobody has any tattoos. Here you can see my Mother. It was a surprise for her and she really liked it. You know, she is very important for me. She is always with me, she is my helper. I also got ‘This is my life’ and a small cross. Normally I get the new ones during the winter, as because of the infection you cannot train after for a 2-3 days for example.

*1-2-3 can be found on the next page.

The compass, I got it in Australia, it’s something like not to lose the right direction in your life.

Underneath the face of Jesus there is ‘When everyone has gone, he is with you.’ As you can see I think a lot on Jesus, God and I pray a lot.

Then I had the Mexicano one, my nickname, it comes from my manager. His brother had a horse in Argentina – he spent a lot of money on him – the same time I started to work with my manager. The name of the horse was Mexicano, so the brother said to my manager, ‘now I have my Mexicano and you also have your Mexicano’. Then on the first race, Mexicano, the horse didn’t start, he was so scared that he couldn’t move. (After he quit from horse sport because of this.) So he came to a race and said to me, ‘hey, Mexicano, you have to go, you can not stay on the grid’. Then everyone started to call me like this.

To motivate myself, I put together some phrases I like.

'Pain is temporary, it can last one minute, one hour, one day even one year. But sooner or later it relieves and something else will take its place. But if I give up the pain last forever.' '70 percent of the success is believing in it.'

I also have a cross on my ba The one on my neck I got to It keeps away the bad energ symbol.

I have only one tattoo I’m not proud of. It’s underneath the Virgin with the Angels. Everyone said to me not to do and maybe they were right…

HĂŠctor BarberĂĄ This was my first tattoo, an elephant. I got in in Brazil in 2004 together with my mechanics and my chief mechanic, Mario Martini. The truth is that it was like a gamble, that if we win the race, we all get a tattoo and we did it. It is really special for me.

e cross on my back has a special meaning too. I got it er my huge crash in Japan when I broke my fourth and h thoracic vertebra. fortunately it never recovered perfectly, I still have oblems with it.

nd tattoo was on my left foor. This is a Hawaiian with three Japanese letters that mean power, nd courage. I did it together with two friends so we have the same tattoos again.

Till now this was the last one that I got together with 6-7 friends.

At the end of the season for sure I will have new ones. My mom is not a big fan of them and neither my two ex-girlfriends, I used to be together longer with, liked it. But it’s interesting, I never had a girlfriend who had tattoos.

2 It took 30-35 hours in 8 months all together to have my left arm as it’s now. I didn’t design or decide in advance, all the elements came when something happened and it fit to the others I had already.

Then I have a chronometer with the sentence around ‘I love my life’ 27 October 2008, still because of my accident there. Underneath there is a skull that screams as I was in a dangerous situation, but it laughs also as it could have been much more worst.

Then there is an Angel, the Angel of victory.

There is an other skull with the meaning of ‘to be or not be’. That’s why there is a clock over the skull, like there isn’t a specific time to die, it comes when is comes. Adriana was a special person in my life.

About the tattoos the one that goes around my wrist is a family crest, so it’s got all the initials from my family in it. The top is the family crest, and the bottom is an interweaving lock which resembles the family. My sister and I wanted to add something to it, her idea was to get a tattoo. I said whatever you want, just give me an idea and I will do it. So she came up with this, it means grateful in Hindi. Grateful for life, for my career. That’s the most visible one that you can obviously see. It goes all the way up to my shoulder.

My shoulder is bunch a different story. That’s the hard thing with my tattoos that they are really difficult. It started out at the top. It says ‘to high places by narrow roads’. That’s the alpha omega symbol with the angel around it, and I did clouds with the staircase going up to it. The staircase to me going up to the clouds with the quote on top kinda’ means the meaning of life, you know, going on through life and going up to heaven later. And also through roads of my racing career. So to high places by narrow roads is in the normal life style and also the way I have to go through it by racing, and that was the reason for that.

My arm wasn’t one project. Actually it’s my favourite because of the way it came together piece by piece. It took probably 20 hours tattooing, but something like four years to do it. My tattoos have to be explained and I really like it. They have meaning for me which is the most important.

C

On the inside I have a clock because me and my dad we are really into clocks and pocket watches. And the time on it is 7:11, which is my birthday and his birthday. I was born 11 July and he on 7 July, so seven-seven.

The triple seven is obviously for luck on a slot machine and the slot handle has my number on it. I also I like really old style tattoos, like Roman looking and that’s why I have the columns on the back and the shape of my number again.

The inside quote is a quote that me and my sister used to love that my mom always got us to say was ‘This too shall pass’ so whatever bad times you are in or anything like that comes, it always pass. I’m in one of those right now I guess with my injuries. I have to look at I every once in a while.

Then I have two big ones on my side and also I have two on my stomach that I have to cover up. But it has to be quite big so I have to be careful and think about it. I want something clean and nice not like a Cadillac or my name or number, anything like that. I’m thinking something like an old, traditional American tattoo with the old roses or something like that. I haven’t figured it out yet. But it will be more an artistic tattoo, so I have to do a lot of thinking before. The two symbols I have now are from when I was 18 years old and they are stupid and look like shit. The only tattoos that I regret and I don’t like. All my other ones I love, I don’t wanna take off, but these two have no meaning to me. Actually I just got them because my mom told me that I was scared to go to have a tattoo, so I went and got them.

Then I have a shield with the number nineteen which I think people remember from World Superbike. My best friend was passed away, so that’s why I got his number on the shield, so hopefully it can protect and help me. I have two dice with my number on it as I gamble a little bit sometimes.

I have a cross that goes around my right leg and it’s the same cross that I was wearing. I got it tattooed on me because it was a cross that my grandpa gave me, and for some reason if I lose the cross in twenty years, this one I can never lose, because it’s on me.

Claudio Cort In 2010 I got the silhouette of Australia. Being there I wanted to have some memories from there.

ti This was the third tattoo I got. I saw one like this and liked it and I wanted as well. I know it’s a strange place. Yes, it hurts, but just in a normal way. Still I’m saying, that close to the armpit was much worst.

I have four tattoos. The first was my number, seventy-one. I got it when I was I think 18 years old. I wanted to try the pain of a tattoo, so I got it. And I think I started with the worst one, close to the armpit is hurts like hell.

This is not a specific kiss, but let’s say it’s my mom’s kiss. It’s from the beginning of 2013.
