Briefly

Formula 1

Mercedes duo started the championship as they had finished the previous one. As Toto Wolff, executive director sad later on ’homework done’. The race was dominated by Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Rosberg could lead the race only during the pitstop sequence, but he couldn’t really threat Hamilton’s win. Half minute after them the battle for the final podium position happened between Sebastian Vettel and Felipe Massa. But the battle was a strategic one. Williams pitted Felipe Massa on Lap 21 fearing Ferrari might try to undercut him by pitting a lap earlier. Instead, Vettel stayed out another three laps on used soft compound tyres and had better pace than Massa on new medium tyres.

Source: UBS

Vettel saved his tyres early on to mount an attack at the end of the first stint. Massa lost time behind Daniel Ricciardo on his first lap out of the pits. This was enough to give Vettel track position after he made his stop on lap 24. So finally Sebastian Vettel began his Ferrari career with a podium.

Quote

It was still a tough race,

though, as Nico was very quick throughout. It was about managing fuel and also the tyre. Once I'd built a two second gap it was about maintaining it. But when Nico turned up the heat it was tough.

It's good to see Ferrari back up here

on the podium. I think they have taken a big step, so I anticipate a good fight with them this year at some point and we can't back off.

Formula 1

It’s quite unbelievable, really, what this team has done. It’s a great feeling to start off the season the way we finished the last and the car is just incredible.

In fact, the podium was pretty awesome. I don’t often get star struck but I can’t believe I was up there with the Terminator! by Lewis HAMILTON

Emotion

“Forza Ferrari!” the Italian accent might still need some work, but this was Sebastian Vettel’s happy radio message to the team on his slowing down lap, as he made it to the podium in his debut race for the Prancing Horse.

Circuit Strategy by UBS Reliability will be less of an issue in this second year of hybrid turbo engines, so this should be a hard fought race. Pirelli has nominated the same tyre compounds as last season, soft and medium. Testing showed that the medium front tyres can take a while to warm up, especially in cooler conditions, as we sometimes encounter in Melbourne. This should be a two stop race and with the soft a good margin faster than the medium, so strategy will be crucial. Last year the first stop was dictated by the safety car, which is a regular feature at Albert Park. It is important for teams and drivers to be reactive to a sudden safety car deployment as there are places to be made up by being decisive.

VAN DER GARDE, THE BOSMAN OF FORMULA 1?

Background

It was 1995 December the 15th when he stepped into the history of sport in a manner similar to that of when the European Court of Justice sentenced an unknown Belgian football player. Can a court sentence change the world of Formula 1 twenty years later?

This was supposed to be van der Garde's car

Formula 1 He did not play for any of the best clubs, and did not participate in any high-ranking world event, however Jean-Marc Bosman still managed to write his name into the history of football. His story started in 1990, when his club, RFC Liege asked for such a high sum from Dunkerque, who had their eye on him, that the French club deemed the amount unpayable. He therefore remained a Liege player, where he ended up spending most of his time warming the substitute bench. Bosman took his stand and brought forth a claim to the venue against his club and the Belgian union, stating that the club had no right to accept bids for his as his contract had expired, and prevented him from practicing his worker’s rights, thus breaking the amendment of the free movement of labour stated in article 48 of the Treaty of Rome. The court decided to allow Bosman to join Dunkerque, without them placing a bid with Liege. In 1995 the European Court of Justice also came to a decision in favour of Bosman. At this point, the world of football changed forever: in reference to this court decision, all athletes were allowed to freely move to wherever, their club could not ask for any money for them after their contract had run out, and also the court deemed it illegal to put a limit on how many foreign athletes a club can sign. In terms of employment, the rules apply to professional football players, not just the average person. After Bosman’s case, it became an everyday phenomena that world-class athletes are signed by foreign clubs with significantly high wages.

Background

Formula 1 Two decades later, Giedo van der Garde claimed his seat at Sauber back after a court trial. The Dutch driver claimed that the team signed 2 other drivers for the 2015 season despite the validity of his contract with Sauber, and the fact his Dutch sponsors had already paid sponsorship for the year. The court accepted his petition before the Australian Grand Prix, and they ordered the team to give him one of the seats, and if they do not, then their equipment would be confiscated, and the team leader could even be taken into custody. Check-mate. In the end, the case was closed with a with an agreement outside the court: van der Garde gave up his seat and received compensation in the form of an alleged 15 million euros. It was not the first time that a Formula 1 driver had to step aside despite a valid contract, however it is a first for one to get their seat back through a trial in court. Nevertheless, whether this case will change the world of Formula 1, as Bosman’s did to Football, only the future can tell. Even though there is a small chance that these consequences are as serious as they were in Bosman’s case, changes can still be expected as van der Garde exhibited the fact that not all racing drivers have to play the role of the underdog, and if they take their stand the teams cannot take advantage of them and their sponsors. So, perhaps drivers will feel more inclined to stand up for their rights as well. Van der Garde could easily become the Bosman of Formula 1, but hopefully only in this sense, as Bosman never received anything in return for achieving the footballers so-called freedom, who have since become millionaires. The compensation he received mostly paid for his legal fees, and the remaining amount was put into a bad investment, and Bosman currently struggles with debt, depression, and alcohol abuse.

Sebastian Vettel won the Malaysian Grand Prix for Ferrari which is the Scuderia’s first win since 2013. Having started from second on the grid, the German managed to finish ahead of the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

This committed them to a three stop race, wh behind the safety car allowed Vettel to stay o make a two stop plan work. Meanwhile Mercedes struggled to find its usu in the 60 degree track conditions.

Formula 1

Undoubtedly the turning point of the race was the safety car on lap four, which the German and the Italian teams tackled differently. Confident of its superior tyre life and with nothing to lose, Ferrari left Sebastian Vettel out on his medium tyres, while Mercedes pitted Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg and switched them onto the hard compound tyres, as they had planned before the race.

Grande gara, bella macchina! (A great race and a beautiful car). Sorry for starting to speak in Italian, but today is such a special day for me. I don’t really know what to say, I am speechless. It’s not only one childhood dream that becomes true, it seems to be many dreams together. It was amazing to look down from the podium and see the mechanics, the engineers, the whole team and listen to the German and Italian anthems. For today, the important thing is for all of us to enjoy this moment together and celebrate. I’d like to be in the same position at every race, but

we must be

realistic, Mercedes were a bit

struggling today but they have a great package and our target is to make the gap smaller at every Grand Prix and make sure that we are the team right behind them”.

as I always said, is huge, it’s good to see what a step forward we did over the winter. This is a special day, it has been a while since both I and team won for the last time. by Sebastian VETTEL

Emotion

“I have won many races, but the first one with Ferrari is very, very special” - said Sebastian Vettel. After a morning in the simulator, the German champion met all the staff of the Gestione Sportiva, in Maranello assembled together to celebrate last Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix victory. The winner’s trophy that traveled with the cabin luggage of Team Principal Maurizio Arrivabene is on display at the Maranello Factory Restaurant. “This is no one-man win: it’s a success

for the whole team, which has been working impeccably at all levels. Seb was just unbelievable today, and Kimi was able to put on a fantastic charge from the back. The whole team has showed a great deal of discipline, just like a Swiss watch-or should I say, an Italian one!” said Maurizio Arrivabene.

Circuit Strategy by UBS There are many challenges at Sepang. The start is always critical here; the distinctive first corner turns right and then left and always results in a big change of field order. The intense heat and humidity of Malaysia pushes the cars’ cooling systems to the limit. If a team is in trouble, they are often forced to open the bodywork to improve cooling, which will hurt their aerodynamic performance and the stability of their carin the corners. This hurts tyre life too. The new Pirelli tyres are more consistent than before, but this track has high energy corners.

BREAKDOWN OMMUNICATION

kl贸s V茅g / Photos: McLaren

NEXT ARTICLE

Background

Formula 1

In view of the results, we could talk about the blunder of McLaren and Honda, due to the fact that before the return of the Japenese brand, all of their press releases were about the repetition of past successes and the outplay of Mercedes. But the press department’s communication regarding Fernando Alonso's accident was the cherry on top of all previous performance.

We will probably never know what happened exactly on that February afternoon when Alonso’s McLarenHonda crashed into the wall at turn 3 of Catalunya circuit. As the team’s communication was really unclear after the accident, the rumors and conspiracy theories took wing immediately, and some of them remained popular for a long time, although Alonso himself has tried to clarify the circumstances too. Unfortunately this is partly McLaren’s fault. It is true that they have refuted diligently all the – we can say – wild rumors regarding the electric shock and similars, but they have not been able to come up with any reassuring explanations. They have also correlated the crash with the strong wind. It is a fact that the blasts on that day made the job more difficult for all the drivers, however, it is almost impossible that the two-time world champion lost the control of his car because of this. Then during the press conference of the Malaysian Grand Prix Alonso stated that the wind was not involved in the accident, as not even a hurricane could move the car under the speed at which these cars travel.

Background

Formula 1 The Spaniard also talked of his remembering the accident, and also pointed out that even if the analyses did not reveal any technical error, it seems clear that there were some problems with the steering-wheel, which locked to the right in the middle of turn 3. By the way, the team mentioned this in a statement a few days earlier - well hidden. It is not our role to sit in judgment on such a professional, successful team with such a rich history as McLaren, but after the accident they made multiple communication errors. Clearly, an accident like this requires long investigations, and you can not come up with the details immediately, but the team should not have speculated and made empty assumptions. They should not have to pointed out every time that the accident was with certainty not due to technical failure, because with this they have left themselves open to suspicions. If they have repeatedly denied any fault, then perhaps there is something to it. It was a mistake from the management's part to class it as an ordinary accident – even if the crash itself was not really powerful indeed – seeing as the driver had to spend three days in hospital. McLaren’s chairman, Ron Dennis should not have denied that Alonso had suffered a concussion at an official press conference, as a few days later it became clear that he missed the season opening due to this. We do not assume that Dennis mishmashed or – as some media defined – lied, it is more likely that he was confused because of the medical terms, but in a situation like this it is unadmittable. Later on he apologized for his mistake. Of course, in this situation it is difficult – or almost impossible – to find a perfect solution. It is obvious that the team needs time, and also that they do not want to reveal all the details to the public. Nevertheless, with their theories and conflicting statements, they have made their situation tougher and tougher. It would have been better to say that ’right now we no information about the accident and the most important thing is Alonso’s health’. The whole truth, as we have already mentioned, probably will never be presented to the public. The most important thing, in fact, is that Alonso has successfully recovered, and with time his car will do aslo, and perhaps McLaren will not make this many communication mistakes next time.

JOB

Briefly After the difficult first two days in Qatar, the Yamahas performance at the race were kind surprising. Jorge Lorenzo seemed to be the probable winner for lot of laps, but finally his teammate, Valentino Rossi did it. For the full story you need to know that Lorenzo had problem with his helmet, so basically he couldn’t see anyithing on the last seven laps. Reigning world champion, Marc Márquez’s podium chances has gone in the first corner, when he run off track relegating him to last place. Ducati riders, Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone both had a spectacular race too. Dovizioso, who started from pole position lead during the race in the opening lap and later again after a long battle with Lorenzo. But the real fight came with Rossi in the last two laps. Finally Rossi won just 0.174 seconds ahead of Dovizioso.

Iannone’s debut as a factory rider finished with his first-ever MotoGP career podium. The last time we could see an all-Italian podium in MotoGP was atMotegi in 2006 with the win of Loris Capirossi followed by Valentino Rossi and Marco Melandri.

THE FIRST WIN The first Moto2 race of the year was full of thrill. On lap four, the pole man, Sam Lowes crashed then the reigning champion, Tito Rabat’s race ended too with a crash. With four laps to go it seemed that we can hear the Marseillaise, but Johann Zarco’s gear shifter had a different idea. Meanwhile he was checking the bike, he almost crashed into the wall in the main straight. Finally the lucky man of the day was Jonas Folger who won his first ever Moto2 race.

K FOR PEDROSA

MotoGP

After the race in Qatar Pedrosa has stolen the show a little bit from Valentino Rossi with his worrying statement. „It’s kind of a long story, but I try to be quick. Basically this race I had an arm pump issue, which is being a problem since exactly a year. Last year I have struggled every singe race, I couldn’t really perform well since then and my results have never been that good due to this fact. I’ve been trying all this time to fix it and to improve. It wasn’t easy, I couldn’t get any good answers. I went through one surgery, which wasn’t successful, but I’ve tried not say in public. Obviously it wasn’t an easy thing. Honda and my team always knew about it. This winter I was travelling all the world around, trying to get many different opinions from several doctors, trying to know if I could have a new surgery, becaus I wanted to be ready for this championship. All the doctors recommended to me not to have an other operation due to the risks. I’ve tried to follow all the advices and worked a lot in a non agressive way, which brings me back today. I wasn’t feeling really well, but I had no other option. Now after the race I can see that I cannot perform as I know I could. I have to decide to find a way to solve this problem. I cannot continue racing and perform this way. So my plan now is try to fix my arm. I don’t exactly what will be the way. The doctors don’t know what to do. Not so many answers for the moment, everything is quite uncertain obviously and I hope to have news soon. Finally thanks to all my sponsors supporting me in this hard time and to all my fans.” said Pedrosa at Losail.

MotoGP The moment after everyone started to guess who would replace the Spaniard and lot of people already saw the headlines with a name of Casey Stoner. HRC’s team manager, Livio Suppo has denied immediately the comeback of Casey, but this is a different story already. Suppo also said that the most important thing is Dani’s condition and HRC will support and help him in all the way. „Dani with this problem is still a top rider. Last year he was anyway really strong. I totally understand him this moment and we need to help him. Show me somebody else that can do the same what he does with one arm.”

THE OPERATION

Five days later Pedrosa underwent an other surgery on his right arm (the third one after 2004 and 2014) in Madrid, performed by Dr. Angel Villamor – orthopaedic surgeon and Medical Director of iQtra Medicina Avanzada. The surgery, aimed to fix Dani’s problematic arm pump, took just over 2 hours. Dr. Villamor completely removed the layer of fascia – the casing around the muscle that gives it form and shape – which is causing problems for Dani. “The surgery was complicated and aggressive using a microsurgery technique and microscopic lens. It lasted two hours, and was done under a local anaesthetic. We examined the muscle fascia, which were hypertrophied and had to be opened up and released. The muscle fascia has been dissected and removed from the forearm. This increased volume engorged the muscle within the inelastic fascia resulting in increased pressure within the compartment, and causing a painful condition of oxygen deprivation – thus causing intense pain in the forearm which collapsed after exercising during riding. We will now monitor Dani over the next few weeks to measure the success of this surgery.”the doctor said. Dani was discharged from the hospital a few hours later, after confirming that his post-operative evolution is positive. The recovery time of 4 to 6 weeks is expected, however his return to racing won’t be confirmed until Dr. Villamor can ascertain the success of the surgery.
