Formula 1 They had been debating about the future for a while. About those events which could change the very foundation of their sporting world. All eyes were on them, everyone was impatiently waiting for those individuals to come to an agreement for months. The frustration just kept increasing, and then when some news finally arrived it had very little impact. Whilst the bosses of the F1 family were talking about the future, a very dear member of that family departed. The debate ceased, and the world of Formula 1 fell silent.

On July the 17th 2015, a great talent left us at the age of only 25. Jules Bianchi struggled and fought for his life throughout a coma after his accident in Suzuka. He fought just as hard as he did to one day become a driver for Ferrari. It was to happen, as the team had been supporting his career for many years. ”This boy was born amongst us, we think of him as a driver of the future” – Luca di Montezemolo, previous president of Ferrari. They supported him when he was fighting for the GP2 championship title with a somewhat aggressive style and courageous overtaking. He won over the supporters, and received significant support during the Renault World Series, where he just missed winning the title due to a debatable accident, and even when he miraculously gained points in a Marussia, which, we have to admit, is not exactly a winning car. All of this formed the foundation on which his career and the team’s future was built. With this he has managed to make F1 history. Then came the unfortunate, tragic accident. The dry, official accounts of the crash stated it was his own fault as he was going too fast under a yellow flag. However, he was just doing what any other corageous, passionate driver would: striving for the best result. He had the same motive in Monte Carlo, in GP2 and in the Renault World Series, that was to win points, and to claim the title. Whether he was a true-born talent, a star of the future or a potential Ferrari world champion, sadly we will never know the answer. However, we do know that Jules was one of the nicest, most modest and down-to-earth figures in the Formula 1 grid.

A young guy, who was receiving a lot of attention over the years due to Ferrari’s support, and after several years achieved that of which hundreds and thousands of young drivers dream of, and even then he still had both feet on the ground. In a world of glam, intrigue, competitive and egocentric world he still managed to remain level-headed, fought for his goals, and always had a few minutes for fans. There was something about him which, with time, made him become a favourite of Ferrari supporters. His willpower, aggressive style, charisma resembled that of Jeal Aleisi, who also won over the crowd. This world has fallen into a state of silence. The debate had no weight anymore, the Hungaroring is silent, and Formula 1 continues to mourn a climbing star. Farewell Jules! Rest in peace.

He was one of my first mates I had in Europe when I moved over in 2007. We spent time in Italy together, so one of my first memories is eating piadina together. It was a sweet and quite heavy one with nutella and coconut, so after one I was pretty full, but he went for an other one. That time he was already driver at a high level, and when I saw him to eat to nutella piadina, I was like, ok, maybe I can relax a little and don’t take myself too much serious. He had a lot of grace about him, he was so competitive, but also humble. He was good fun to hang out with, obviously he is going to be missed a lot. Daniel RICCIARDO

I think the first time I heard his name was back in 2003. He was a much better driver in go-karts than I was; he was a bit younger. My funnies memory of him? It was an electric gokart race at the end of 2011. It was a crazy race, I got hit during the second race while I was fighting for the podium. I was really angry, just wanted kick his bottom. Then Jules also got hit by [Sébastien] Bourdais and he wanted to kill Bourdais, so everyone ended the race like ‘I wanna punch this guy’. After a short time my wife came and asked me whether I was cool down. I said yes. Then she asked Jules and he was still furious saying ‘I gonna kill him’ [laughed Romain].

After a disappointing start Lewis Hamilton slipped to third losing two positions and therefore being stuck behind the two Williams cars for a while. The race was very, very tough. After the bad start I was chasing down the Williams. It was very, very hard to get close and overtake. Then the rain arrived. I think for the first time probably in my career I made the perfect choice tyre wise and so I’m really, really happy with that. I started to tear up on that last lap, just really hoping I could hold onto it for you guys and man, I felt you all way. I hope we can come back next year… I’m going to keep pushing for this championship. Thank you so much for all the support. Now, let’s party. Lewis HAMILTON

Circuit Strategy by UBS Silverstone has the fastest corner combinations on the F1 calendar and is loved by the drivers, but it can be a real headache for the engineers and strategists. The reason for this is the high-speed corners, which put huge loads through the tyres. Pirelli brings the hardest tyres in their range to Silverstone and it is hard to predict their performance. Strategy for this race is dependent on how significant the performance difference is between the medium and hard compounds. Unless the temperatures rise too high this year, one stop should be the default again.

IT WAS AROUND A YEAR AGO WHEN IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT HE WOULD BE A FORMULA 1 DRIVER. THE PUBLIC OPINION TURNED AGAINST HIM IMMEDIATELY. ’IN THE PREMIER CLASS AT AGE 17?’, ’ARE THEY MAD?’, ’THIS WILL BE THE BIGGEST SHAME FOR F1’, ’HE IS TOO YOUNG, INEXPERIENCED AND JUST NOT READY’. AFTER ONE YEAR MAX VERSTAPPEN IS REPUTED AS THE BIGGEST FUTURE CHAMPION – NOT WITHOUT REASON.
Formula 1
UE TALENT
Background
But if someone ignored the sounding headlines that Toro Rosso is bringing a 17 years old guy to Formula 1, and maybe looked up who Max Verstappen was or, God willing, they had seen his previous races, they would know already that a special talent would cross the doorstep of Formula 1. Special indeed. This is not only a boring stock phrase or overdrawn, this guy is one in a million.
Unbelievable, but it’s true, two years ago Verstappen was still racing in a gokart. After he won everything possible in this genre, they let him drive a few smaller formula cars, in which he broke some circuit records right away. Then he finished 3rd in the European Formula 3 Championship winning numerous races in a row. He presented delirious manoeuvres and who saw would never forget his race at the Nurburgring winning by 2 seconds under the changing conditions. Accoring to the legends he charmed the Red Bull bosses that time.
Formula 1
Background
More importantly – and this is the key point in the whole Verstappenstory – most of the time he performed without any mistake. He carried out his work like a machine. Red Bull did not have the time to lose as other F1 teams started showing interest in him as well, so they had to get him quickly. Verstappen didn’t care about the voices of criticism – even if it generated something like public anger – he just started to already show his talent during the winter tests. It was remarked in Barcelona that besides the champions and top drivers he was the only one performing at the same rhythm using the same lines every time.
Formula 1
He also fulfilled his first races flawlessly, even if he had to race on circuits he had never seen before. Still in Australia he was driving on the 10th position until his car stopped, in Malaysia he became the youngest ever point scorer, while in China he was one of the stars of the race thanks to his brave overtakings. Eventually the first big mistake was made in Monaco, but after his collision with Romain Grosjean he was not attacked that much, he became more of a ’martyr’, as fans like to watch brave drivers.
Background
Not surprisingly, now even his critics see him as a future champion thanks to his race in China, and his tricky way following Sebastian Vettel after being lapped and utilizing that also the other drivers had to let Vettel go. All these came from the mind of a 17 year old kid. At the Hungaroring he exceeded all the expectations. He was able to finish the thrilling and chaotic race in 4th position, even after the collision (which damaged his first wing) with Valterri Bottas following the safety car restart. 'Where did that come from? I still can't believe it.’ – he said. This result made him the youngest driver to finish in the top four of a Grand Prix. Verstappen is incredible indeed. Just imagine what he can do later if at the age 17 he is already able to complete actions as mentioned before, and he can also make the older drivers’ life more difficult. His patience, aggression and mature thinking makes him certanly special and a star that can twinkle in the sky of Formula 1 for a long time.

Briefly
The Formula 1 family arrived to the Hungaroring after a really dark period following the death of Jules Bianchi. Whether the numerous mistakes of the drivers related to this delicate period (most of them had gone to the funeral, all of them had been asked about the tragedy, also a 1 minute silence break were held right before the start) or to the track conditions, nobody can tell, but for sure this was the race of the year so far. Making a brief summary won’t be easy, but let’s see the basic moments of the 10th round of 2015. Vettel took the lead right after the start thanks to the poor starts (or better to say, the start-system problems) of both Mercedes cars. Vettel saw his 30 second advantage wiped out when the Safety Car came out on lap 42. At this time Kimi Räikkönen was having already a problem with his energy recovery system which forced him to retire finally. Ferrari’s German could keep his concentration also after the SC period, but behind him the race was quite eventful with collisions, punctures, technical problems and extra pit stops. Finally Daniil Kvyat could stand on the podium - first time ever in his carreer – none the less getting a ten seconds penalty. Daniel Ricciardo’s third place is his best position since Austin last november, Max Verstappen reached his best ever result and also Fernando Alonso could be really happy with his best finish far away this year.
Formula 1
Briefly
Championship leader, Lewis Hamilton was having a bad day. After his run off in Lap 1 he was running 10th, then from 4th position he went down to 13th following a collision with Ricciardo after the SC period. His final 6th position is kind a miracle also the fact that he could gain his advantage in the championship on Nico Rosberg who also collided with Ricciardo suffering a puncture with only 5 laps to go. It has been a week with a lot of ups and downs and as I said after the race I dedicate this win to Jules and his family. I think, it was for all of us very, very difficult, so this one is for him and especially all the people in Ferrari. At Ferrari we knew that sooner or later he would have been part of our team, part of this family.
Cette victoire, c’est pour Jules.
The race was difficult especially at the end with all the thoughts coming through my mind. I had to stop thinking because it’s really easy to make any stupid mistake in a second. Our race was very strong from the beginning and of course the safety car in the end was not helping us, but it obviously made a lot more interesting at the end. Sebastian VETTEL

I’m like 99.8 per cent happy. I’m a little bit disappointed because we didn’t have the traditional Hungarian trophy with the porcelain on the podium today. I was looking forward to that – not that I have a crush on porcelain or a weakness for porcelain but I think it belongs to this grand prix. I hope the organisers will go back to it.
I think in 2010 I was very close to win and did a stupid mistake and then we had this very ugly – I’m not saying the brand – dog with four legs, or five legs, or six, I don’t even know – then they went back to the porcelain one, now they’ve gone back to something else! Obviously it’s great to win but not entirely perfect. Sebastian VETTEL

I am very happy with the results; it was a fantastic turn around in what was such an eventful race. After turn one I thought my race was over to be honest, because I had such a massive flat spot, I could hardly stay on track. But then the team told me to keep pushing. You know some people say “never give up” but they don’t know what they’re saying and until today I didn’t also know what it means really, but today I really learned what it means to never give up because it can always come your way. But you know this podium it goes first of all to Jules Bianchi and to his family. We lost a great guy, a great driver. So all my thoughts are with him right now. Danyiil KVYAT

Circuit Strategy by UBS The Hungaroring circuit is quite a challenge for the drivers and for the strategy team; it’s rarely used, the track is usually dirty at the start of the F1 race weekend and the grip improves as the weekend goes on. This means that it’s very easy to be misled by the tyre performance on Friday. The Hungaroring is notoriously hard on the front tyres, partly due to a number of long corners. If the weekend stays dry, Qualifying and the start are always crucial to doing well at the Hungaroring, as the slow second and third corners tend to stretch the field out on the opening lap.

WE DON’T NEED SOCIALISM! Text: Nemzeti Sport - Barna Zsoldos; Potos: DPPI, John Townsend
We are glad to announce that Jacques Villeneuve hasn’t changed at all, at least considering his character. It is not the first and for sure not the last time that he shares his sharp thoughts. This time is about how radically he would change Formula 1. How do you see the F1 in our days? Do you like it? No, not at all. This is not Formula 1, considering the present regulations we just cannot talk about F1. When a driver asks his team through the radio to figure out a strategy for him, because he is just not able to best his rival on the track, it projects a really bad message ruining the image of F1. Lots of people say that the races are boring… I don’t know why it would be boring, but if they find nonstop overtaking thrilling, well this is not Formula 1. It can be expected from a cross rally race, but not from F1. It is just not a legitimate request. Also, nowadays we can see interesting close ups and strategic fights, but the DRS kills all the races. Because of the adjustable rear wings, there are no real overtakes, but only changing positions.
The interview was originally published in Nemzeti Sport
Formula-1 MotoGP
Interview
Don’t you think that without DRS we couldn’t have position changings either? Who cares?! Well, there is not anything more boring than just trailing after each other. Dodging each other is no more exciting either. What means more thrill is the real manoeuvre, the real overtakes, the thing that if the one in front makes a mistake, he has to pay for it. In the 1990-2000s we could see amazing overtakes, but today nobody takes the risk and force it as there is another way to do it. And what about the tyres? Would we need more stabile ones? We need a tyre war to force the suppliers to develop, and we need to get rid of DRS to leave the drivers to make a decision about the small or big downforce during the race. No one chooses the small downforce, because that can be helped by the adjustable rear wing in the straight, and this is the problem because with the highest downforce the cars will stir up the air even more in the bends which will destroy the tyres on the car behind. These problems just keep generating each other, they should be solved in one go. But with different suppliers tyres would became too important. And? Well it won’t be too fair if another supplier would make a difference between the teams. This is F1, you have to push everything to the limit. The performance of the cars, engines, tyres – this was always the case. Trying to achieve equality for everyone and everything is not a good way. F1 cannot work in a socialist structure.
Formula 1
Interview
Formula 1
But in 2005 for example you could have any of the cars, if you used Bridgestone instead of Michelin you hade no chance to win. This is life. Then you would have changed to Michelin. If you are not happy with your engine or tyre, next year you choose another one. That’s it. It’s quite an extreme capitalist way of thinking. Absolutely, this is an essential of this sport. What is the problem with capitalism when the teams run with a 400 million dollar budget per year? You are too young, you have your head in the clouds and have utopian views. You are thinking in a way like all the socialsts, but the world and the F1 don’t work like this. Stop dreaming, it has no meaning. In your active time racing was so much cheaper. You could win a world championship with having around 100 million dollars, now you can barely finish the season. It’s the team’s decision how much money they want to spend. Someone spends more, others less. How many millions of dollars do the teams waste with unnecessary simulators? They spend money on that, because they have enough money. If they didn’t have any, they wouldn’t spend any. So you think cost reduction is not necessary? Absolutely not! This way, the smaller teams would die and only three-four teams would stay. How many do we have now? You cannot consider Manor as a real team, also Lotus is on the borderline. Yes, lots of them are just suffering, but you have to understand that this is Formula 1. If you try to bring everyone to the same level, all the magic would be lost, the product wouldn’t be vendible or profitable.

Briefly
Last year we could used to see the Repsol Honda guys on the podium together (8 times out of the 18 races), this year we had to wait till the German GP. Going back to the 2014 chassis with the new swing arm, Marc Mårquez was able to ride properly again and win his 6th race in a row at Sachsenring. The German track suits well Dani Pedrosa too, who after his arm pump issue is back in business again. Valentino Rossi finished 3rd (ahead of Jorge Lorenzo), so he is waiting the second half of the season with 13 point lead in the championship standings over Lorenzo. Still a long way to go, but the statistics is on the Italian’s site. Since 1998 (when the first race was held at the Sachsenring) the rider who was leading the classification at this stage of the championship, has won the title finally....

We needed this victory a lot. I worked really hard in Assen and here to get back on the top and finally we did it. I’m happy because of the result, but I’m more happy that I started to enjoy riding the bike again. I missed this feeling a lot. I most admit that a race with the battles is much more fun for us and for the fans too. In one moment I was thinking about to stay there and have a look on the others, but this wasn’t a race for that. In the future we will have other chances to have great battles, but now I had to be clever and win.

This was the first race of the season that I could finish close to the top guys. I had a good rhythm already during the practices and my start was quite ok too finally. My only regret is that at the beginning I couldn’t really push strong and go with Marc. Dani PEDROSA

It was a good race, I enjoyed it. After suffering during the first days, we found a good solution on the warm up. So I had a good battle with Jorge and Dani. I also learned some good lines following Dani. At one point I started to think that maybe the 2nd place is still possible, but in the same moment he went away so I didn’t have to think about anymore whether to take any risk or not. Finally that DAY arrived for Xavier Simeón too. From the six different winners we had so far this year, he is the third one to take its first ever victory in the middle class (and the a second one with a first carreer victory). With a strong close up in the final third of the race, Simeón was able to catch Johann Zarco and overtook him with 4 laps to go. Simeón could hold off the Frenchman till the end to take his first ever win in the world championship. The 3rd place went to Álex Rins after the last corner crash of Tito Rabat who was taken out by Franco Morbidelli. Despite of the six different riders to win in the first half of the season, Zarco is top of the classification with a 65 points lead with an other 9 races to go.

DANNY COOL
Danny Kent performs a superb season, which is a good story, but from the other hand it’s getting more and more difficult to find the proper words on him. An other time again this year he dominated all the practices and also during the race his only enemy was himself. He won his 3rd race this season with an advantage over than 7.5 seconds, which could have been also one more if he didn’t relax a bit in the last laps. His teammate, Efrén Vázquez’s second place was also secured, but for the 3rd spot at least there was a big battle till the last millimeters. It was Enea Bastianini to take the 3rd place by only 0.026 second from Romano Fenati and 0.061 from Niccoló Antonelli.

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Suzuki GSX-R machine Aleix Espargarò and Maverick Viñales raced with a special livery at the Sachsenring (and also in Indianapolis). The graphic is based-on the iconic blue and white colour scheme from the 80s that was also debuted on the race track by Kevin Schwantz in 1987. The former 500cc world champion shared these special moments with his Suzuki family in Germany where we had the chance to have a short chat with him.
It is difficult to belive that your last world championship race was back in 1995, twenty years ago… Yes, I announced my retirement in Mugello, it was probably the 9th of June. Do you remember that day well? It was hard to make the decision, but when I did make it and I announced it, it was a lot easier. There were a lot of emotions that day, but I also felt that it was a huge weight being lifted off my shoulders. It had been 12 month since I hadn’t had fun racing, I was just racing to make money. I always told myself that if it was not fun anymore, and if I didn't get excited about going into the garage to get on my bike, then it was time to stop. I waited a little bit longer than I should have. I should have stopped at the end of 1994 and should have taken care of my wrist properly instead of making a quick fit.

MotoGP
Do you find the MotoGP much different now compared to what it was in your time? The biggest change is the professionalism, the images that the teams wanna portray to the manufactores has changed this sport a lot. The riders used to finish the race on the Sunday then after we talked to the teams, we went out for dinner, we had drinks etc. Now if you are not on the podium, you just want to take the first helicopter and try to get out of here. I think it also comes with all the media exposure, with all the TV etc. But it also makes a really good living for the riders. The money was good also in our times, but now it’s different. These guys have a whole different image to portray. But the paddock I think still has a lot of the sames faces. There is lot of the same people here that wanna have fun. I know it is difficult to say, but is it better or worst now? It’s probably not as fun as it used to be. Going out after the race was also part of the fun. If you won or lost, to see what the mind says of the guy that you beat or how the team reacts. They celebrate or they are mad, upset. You could see how unconfortable you could make people by beating them. But Valentino is really good in playing games with people with their minds anyway, so he doesn’t need go out on Sunday night to do that, he says stuff to the press and makes others’ raceweekends more tough.

My first tattoo was this no34 with a star. I got it after I won the 125cc world championship in 2004. This remained my number till I started to race in MotoGP (No34 was retired by the FIM as a testament to Kevin Schwantz’s popularity – Ed).
This tattoo I got together with all my friends in 2010. 'Ten bota' means 'stay strong' in Romagnol dialect. I was born and I am still living in the region of EmiliaRomagna.

There isn’t any special meaning of the flowers encompassing my left arm, I liked them esthetically. But clearly the tattoo itself has the meaning. The ’S’ is the initial of my daughter’s name, Sara. Next to this there is the date of her birthday. But there is an other date, which is a memory to my sister, who unfortunately died in the belly of my mom. Her name would have been Sara, this is why I chose this name for my daughter.

This is a Polynesian tattoo, I got it after Simoncelli’s accident. You can see the sun god, which symbolize the life, a frigate bird, image of destiny and a gecko. The words of the tattoo say, ’I am the master of my destiny, but only destiny knows the end of my journey.’ I do believe that we command our life and what happens to us, no matter what is the sport or job you do. But the day when all comes to the end, it’s written.
Usually mothers are not so happy with the tattoos of their children. What did your mom say? Well, she doesn’t like the tattoos either, but she loves me a lot. For her I’m perfect as I am no matter what I do. We have a really special relationship and also she trusts me a lot. Maybe because I have never ever caused any problem.

I got this tattoo when Sara was two years old. She said ’ciccolo’ instead of ’piccolo’, which means little.
Background
The one on my chest was my first tattoo, it’s from the beginning of my first year in Moto2. Right before the test my grandpa had a heart attack and he passed away. One month later my Nan followed him as well. Both were one of the most important persons in my life. My Nan was like my mom, we grow up with her, with my dad and with my step grandfather let’s say, we called him Roy. So my older sister and me decided to do something and we got the same tattoo. The other tattoo starts on my shoulder and then goes down on my arm. It’s about life and racing. The flower goes into like a sprocket from the bike. For some people we are like normal ones, but some thinks that we don’t have feelings. They believe that we only think about racing and nothing else, but clearly it’s not true. Some way we are like machines, but in the other way we are just as normal as anyone else.
’Don’t count every Race, Make every race count.’ It’s because sometimes we are criticized, saying, ooooo an other race, an other race. Then when you have a bad season you just cannot wait to have it finished, but when you wanna win the championship, every race, every little points count and make the difference. So before every race it reminds me to give my maximum during the next 40 minutes.

I have to think about the story of it… So this is a compass mainly because we are travelling everywhere all the time. It doesn’t have a strong meaning like the other ones. And clearly I liked the design, as I think it fits well to the others.
This is the newest one, I got it after Le Mans this year. It doesn’t have so much meaning. I went to the guy and said to put me something a bit different, something you wanna this time. I still need to fill up the space on my arm. The next one will be an eye from the wolf, maybe during the summer. If you remember my helmet from Silverstone, that one. I got it at the end of last year, during the winter. It’s because everything is against time, like if you are 2 tens faster you can make a big step, But even in every day life, the day is only 24 hours, so everything you do, you have to take advantage of it. On the small one, the finger is on my number 45, but the big one is on 48 which is for Tomizawa. So I have it private. Not a big one, but this was the main reason for it. Yes, after years, I still think about him. Not like every day, but he is always there in your mind. I always feel that he is there when I’m riding, which is a good thing. And what happened is one of the things that you will never forget. I’m taking him with me and we do all together.
Background
This is the signiture of my mother. It’s like when a painter finishes his painting and then he signs it This was my first one, I got it when I was 15 years old. It reminds me of my first ever race in the world championship in the 125cc. In the middle there is my racing number. All the letters and numbers around it have a meaning, but I won’t tell it.
”
I would like to get a bigger one, but it’s really important to have the right tattoos and ideas. You cannot make a mistake.
This is my symbol, you can see it also on my helmet, leather etc. I chose this viewfinder because it’s important to have objectives and try to do everything to reach and realize them.

On my other shoulder I have the text, ’I love my life, thanks Dad’. I’m really grateful for my life, I couldn’t ask better. And I’m very thankful to my dad in general. He has been helping me to realize my dreams. He is such an important person in my life.

I put believe close to my heart because lot of times it’s more important what your heart says, than what others do or what they think.
Background I have five tattoos, but two are hided, so I won't show. One of these two was my first tattoo and I got it to my lower abdomen, because I wanted to understand whether I like it or not. This is a caricature of myself, showing a moment when I’ve just woken up. He was my company during lot if mornings.
This tribal was my second tat 2002 before the race in Barcel philosophy behind it. But I des version, as you can see, there i middle. For a long time I had only th someone said that the tattoo bring luck. Even if I won my wo two, I decided to get an othe too ridiculous. It’s better not t
Marco M It’s a Polynesian tattoo, I got it for two reasons. One is that I wanted to detract the attention from my scars and I really like the way as it encompassing it. The other reason was the meaning as it’s symbolize the God that gives you power for the sports. For a rider the right arm is the best place for this design and power.
After the fi everything needed so me to pas the other d

Danilo Petrucci Being a policeman, I cannot have tattoos at any visible place, like my arm for example. That’s why I didn’t have any tattoo at all. Then last year, after I broke my wrist, I started to work on my mentality and also I felt that I had to do something different to make my life change. So I cut my hair and I also got a tattoo. It says ’Life is racing’. I believe this in general, not exactly on the racetracks. For me the best and most beautiful things born during a race. For example when a baby arrives, it’s a race to get to the hospital. I took this as a way of living. Everything starts with a race, competition.

Behind every successful man, there is a woman. If the man is a MotoGP rider or an F1 driver for sure that that certain woman is also beautiful. But in a lot of cases they are not only nice but well supporting as well. This young lady, for example, had a dream since she was a little girl – to become an interior designer. She is coming up to her last exams, but in the same time she is the most important support for his husband, Aleix Espargaró. Dream life, dream love, harmony. Let me introduce you to Laura.
Last year was full of action for you and Aleix. First, you moved to Andorra. How is life there? It’s really good, I just love it. We are living in a valley, which is beautiful. It’s really healthy, the air is so clear and fresh. So if you like sports, this is the best place to live. Whose decision was to move there? I think we decided together, but clearly it comes from Aleix and Pol. They needed a place a bit far from friends, family, managers etc. In Barcelona there was a lot of compromise for them, and they couldn’t disconnect at all. In Andorra they can relax or just concentrate more on their things. Does it fit well ith your life too? For me it’s good as well, but when Aleix travels and I can’t, I’m totally alone. The other thing is that still I cannot work there as an architect as I don’t have the residence yet. But it’s not a big problem, because I’m just finishing my degree now, I’m working on my last project.

Why did you choose this profession? Did you have anything else in your mind? I really liked interior designs. When I was a child my mother read a lot of interior design magazines, so I cut out the photos they made in AutoCUD (a software for 2D and 3D computeraided design). I also had a little house, a dollhouse with all the furnitures and everything which I played a lot with. I still have it at my grandmother’s house. I love the enthusiasm as you are talking about it. I also see a lot of photos on your Instagram page related to your future profession. To become a good interior designer you must study a lot from the things that are already done. That’s why I post photos I like. They are also really good inspirations. So your profession is like a pre-ordination. What about Aleix? Was it also something that has been obviouse for a while? Well, we were only 13 when we met in Granollers our birth city. Aleix just won the Spanish Championship and we met after at a „party” – I mean party for kids. There was a little pub for young people where we could meet after the school or on the weekends. Once they organized a mini fashion show where I was one of the girls presenting clothes and they also invited Aleix. So we met there as we had some common friends too. But at that time I didn’t like him at all. He was really nervous and crazy. I remember that I also said this to our friends. Anyway, because of this event and fashion show we were all together for a week to practice, so we had some chats and we became close friends. I didn’t know anything about him and their racing career and I think it was a plus for him. But as I said, that time I didn’t think about him as my future boyfriend as (being a girl) I was already more mature. We became a couple only four year later.

I have asked them already, but you have a special point of view, so I have to ask. How difficult is it for them racing in the same category? Well, Aleix is the big bear. He always takes care of Pol. If Pol arrives in front of him, he never gets angry. He is frustrating with himself, but he is really happy because of Pol’s success. But for Pol it’s not like this. He is the younger, so he wanna beat Aleix more. Last year was a special one for you and Aleix as you got married. Was it your wish? All was a surprise for me. I mean the engagement. When I was in Brazil (for one year of Erasmus scholarship) our relationship changed a lot. We moved ten steps forward. The distance brought us closer than ever before. I remember when Aleix first came to visit me after three months, and he appeared with the special ring. He said: Laura, now I know, that I need you. I was a bit shocked as I still had nine months there in front of me. But clearly it didn’t matter. I always trusted him and our love. What about the future? Are you planning to have a family? Clearly I want to have a family, but not now. Now Aleix is in a really good period of his career. I know him, I know how much he loves children, so I know that it would be like Stoner. He is pushing me quite hard, but I really think that now this is the best for us and him.

MARC COMA’S UNEXPECTED ANNOUNCEMENT OF RETIRING WAS A DOUBLE-SHOCK. FIRST BECAUSE HE WAS SAID TO RETURN TO THE 2016 DAKAR RALLY FOR HIS SIXTH WIN. SECONDLY, EVERYONE SAW HIM RACING ON FOUR WHEELS AFTER HIS CARREER ENDED ON THE BIKES. BUT HE DEDIDED TO STAY CLOSE TO HIS BELOVED DESERT IN A DIFFERENT WAY.

He quits. Because he feels the time arrived. At the age of 38, after five Dakar victories and six world championship titles, Marc Coma hangs his boots up. Clearly not without a reason as accepting Étienne Lavigne’s request, he will be the new sporting director of the Dakar rally. ’This way I was given a chance to give back all the energy that I got from this race’ - he said. Leaves one with mixed feelings. On one hand, we can understand the rider as he has all the rights to retire whenever he wants, but from the other hand we all feel sorry. We all feel so sorry that it looks like the record (6 Dakar wins) of Stéphane Peterhansel is safe for a while. After Cyril Despres switched to four wheels Coma was the only one with the chance to break this record. If he had won the next Dakar (and he had a really good chance to do it), he could have equaled the 6 wins record.
Background
MotoGP
Also, to tell the truth, this was his target. At least in April when he won the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, first round of the 2015 Cross-country Rally World Championship (that he still leads). ’I would be a liar saying that I don’t think about the record. Moreover, this gives one of the biggest motivation for me. I would like to reach my 6th win, but not at all costs. I still enjoy riding the bike, I will continue my work, then we will see…’ - he said that time, but less than two months later, the accouncement arrived: he will stop. His life is going to change, that is certain. However, he won’t leave the riding behind. Even Peterhansel was not able to do it (even if he is a driver since 15 years, he still races in smaller bike events), nor Despres or Jean-Louis Schlesser who just for fun picks his bike to have some ride in the mountains. This is a way of living that you cannot quit from. ’The man comes here because he loves nature. I’m glad that people respect us for what we are doing, but luckily the circus around the rallye races is far smaller than around the track ones.’ - said Coma, who is still the same simple, relaxed and nice guy he was at the beginning.
Background
He was not in over his head after five Dakar wins he is still living in the same small village with 1800 inhabitants where he was born (one hour drive from Barcelona) and no one thinks to ask an autograph from him as everyone has known him there since he was in nappies. Maybe if he makes too much noise with his bike, people say, ’Marc is training…’. He still has the same friends since primary school, but he got a new family, the KTM team, where he will remain a family member forever. Even if he doesn’t ride a bike, which is really unlikely. What was his secret as a rider? In the last few years already his experience. That he knew that is was impossible to have everything under control, but it is a must to be renewed and keep your eyes on your opponents.
MotoGP
Background
If he counted how many days he spent in the desert, if would be a really high number, but his feelings for the desert have not changed at all. ’I love and respect the desert, I feel so comfortable there. Between the huge dunes even the smallest things could become important and this teaches humbleness to everyone. What I like the most is the philosophy of racing and the comradeship.’ When his biggest rival, Cyril Despres moved to car racing, he said he understood that no one could stay on the bike forever. The Frenchman was faced with a good chance and he took it. Now the opportunity is in front of Marc Coma. One thing we can already guarantee. He will also be a perfectionist as a sporting director‌
