ABOUT ME / DESIGN APPROACH Hello, my name is Grace Craig. I am a student at the University of Kansas, and I am enrolled in the Interior Architecture program within the School of Architecture. I am in my third year, and within this booklet you will find a comprehensive presentation of the projects I have worked on over the years. My focus on design rests within making sure the user is comfortable in the space I am creating. Performing research on how to create the best atmosphere for the client is something I make sure to include in my design process. I believe that research on how the specific user group utilizes a space and functions within a space is important to understand as a designer.

Project Description In order to provide a space that can handle the future families of all four children in my family, my parents decided to build a new lakehouse where we could all gather. The goal is to have 5 bedrooms, a bunk room, three and a half bathrooms, an open great room and kitchen, and ample outdoor space for everyone to gather comfortably. I designed the floor plans and elevations, and then worked with an architect to make sure everything worked with our budget and could be built.

Project Description Located in La Jolla Heights, California, the Blue Ocean Senior Village will be an Alzheimer’s facility for those with low to medium severity Alzheimer’s Disease. Our goal this semester was to design the commercial side of this village in order to provide the residents with amenities such as a spa, movie theatre, restaurant, and more. Research was conducted on Alzheimer’s Disease in order to design spaces in a way that was most beneficial for the residents.

What is Alzheimer’s Disease? A progressive brain disease that causes problems with memory, function, and behavior.

What happens to the brain? • Brain cells are unable to function properly • As damage progresses, the brain cells die • Irreversible changes • Plaques and tangles are developed more than the average brain, creating blockages in communication

Concept

The design of the Blue Ocean Senior Village aims to gracefully bring back a sense of control to the residents. By developing a design that seamlessly provides secure and clear transitions from one space to another, bridges the gap between the outdoor and interior spaces, and catalysts independent interaction with the space, the facility works to engage users in a way that encourages them to make decisions for themselves.

Project Description For this project, we worked with the non-profit organization FosterAdopt Connect (FAC). This organization works with children, youth, and families as they naviage the complexities of the foster care system, leading them in a positive and healing direction. Their headquarters building was to be in an existing 30,000 square foot building previously used as a Catholic school.

Concept The design of this space will initiate the transition through the Hierarchy of Needs; starting from providing the basic, physical needs of survival to encouraging the development of self-actualization, the realization of one’s potential. The pyramid, in conjuction with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, can be directly translated into this building and its different floors’ goals.

The Nook Semester Fall 2019 Professor Casey Franklin Skills Developed & Used Research-based design Concept development Adobe Creative Suite Revit

Project Description The goal of this project was to take an existing space and design a co-working space to replace its abandoned shell in Kansas City, Kansas. Throughout this project, I learned about the details of the design process as I developed the space I coined the “Nook,” a contemporary space with a library feel to promote quiet study and focused work.

Libraries are spaces that have both progressive, communal areas, and traditional, heads-down work areas. The goal is to create a choice of the feeling of work as play or work as study. Incorporating this idea into the co-working space could create a versatile environment for those who work best in a dynamic or a quiet area.
