M About

MADates is a new and exciting dating concept that reflect the world of

online dating in a physical setting.

The online dating world can be a mad

and misleading place that begs the question; do you really know who is on the other side of the screen?

MADates will take you through the online dating process in a safe and secure

environment. It will demonstrate how

dehumanising online actions are and will make you question the ethics of your

judgement. MADates aims so leave clients

with a date in the bar or outside the venue, much like the online counterpart. The aims of the space are to meet a partner through opposing verdicts of

looks and personality individually. With each attribute (Looks and personality)

presented one at a time, clients will be able to focus on particular aspects of the dates

before narrowing down their options

Statement of Intent.

Throughout this unit I will be exploring how The First Church of Christ, Scientist, a former church, can be used as an Online dating experience. I intend to design a space where singles can interact with others in the style of online dating to replicate the madness behind it. Precedents including Take Me Out, and tv programmes like Dating Naked, Naked Attraction, Love at first Kiss and Dating in the Dark, will inspire my work in terms of the concept and function. On the other hand, spaces such as Gresham Venezia cafĂŠ, The Restaurant, Milan and The Museum of Islamic Art will inspire my interior and design. I will take on challenges of working with listed church and a debatable topic as well as creating a design with safety and security of the individuals in mind even though the space replicates the dangers of the internet. I will use the skills I have learnt in my first year, and new skills to create a realistic but creative design.

Madness can be interpreted as many different things including insanity, mental illness, hysteria, instability or psychosis. Other definitions compare madness to extremely foolish behaviour or a state of wild and chaotic activity. All of these behaviours are characterised as abnormal mental patterns and violating social norms. This can be interpreted as the behaviour of people who use a space or the space itself. The people who use the space may be seen as mad by society due to their abnormal behaviour or beliefs such as religion or hobbies. The 'norms' in society include conforming to what the wider publics views and interest are depending on the political and social stance of the area. Groups of people that often end up excluded from society have the lesser views and interests of society. Some examples of these groups include ethnic minorities or groups that have a common interest. Madness in architecture can be characterised with similar definitions like instability, vulnerability, mayhem and disorder. I think a for a building to portray madness, it must reach outside the norms of traditional building appearances and challenge the average interior space. The madness of the architecture should reflect the madness of the use, in order to work together to question what is normal and should it be normal.

To live and let live, without clamour for distinction or recognition; to wait on divine love; to write truth first on the tablet of one’s own heart - this is the sanity and perfection of living. Christian Science was discovered by Mary Baker Eddy in Boston in the 19th century and the original mother church in 1894. The teachings of this newfound religion include the mentality is that the most powerful from of healing is prayer. They are not against the practices of medicine, but believe it has the best affects alongside prayer. Eddy believed that illness and poor health is an illusion that we create ourselves, and therefore have to power to correct it. She additionally believed that the bible was her only authority and that it had thousands of errors in. She believed that God need her to interpret his words to the world as before her the world was in darkness. There are four main beliefs that differentiate Christian Science from Christianity: Rejection of original sin, and that illness is due to the separation from God therefore one must indulge in prayer in order to close that gap. The church does not ordain pastors because it believes everyone has divine characteristics. Alternatively, they democratically elect readers to run church services. That salvation is an everyday process as they seek to reform rather than pardon sins.

There is an emphasis on spiritual healthcare that prayer is the first answer to illness. Some may believe that this concept that Christian Scientists follow is madness due to the complete trust in prayer and lack of belief in the development and research of modern day medicine. Its furthermore mad to entrust someone else’s beliefs in healing themselves without understanding the concept, such as within children. Mary Baker Eddy’s views seem that she believes she is omnipotent and that followers including herself are equivalent to God and Christ. Therefore, there is a level of conflict between Christian Scientists and Christians. Christians describe them as a cult that believed that Jesus was not unique. There is a group called Christian Way that is made up of former Christian Scientists that aim to share the salvation message to those in the Mind Sciences such as Christian Science.

There is an endless amount of online dating sites today, some being appropriate to everyone and others for more specific people. Many are a place for finding a serious relationship and others for non-serious. What all websites offer however is a chance to talk to a variety of individuals on a mass scale compared to the amount of people you may come across in your daily life. It is estimated that by 2040, 70% of people will have met their partner through online dating. This modern method of dating offers more opportunity to find what you are looking for but unfortunately doesn’t come without problems.

Online Dating. Another dating site with a judgemental and mad process is called Beautifulpeople.com. Whilst signing up you must give personal details such as your weight as well as a photo. Afterwards you go under a scrutinizing process of waiting for around an hour to be voted ‘in or out’

This allowed them to pick and choose potential partners based on characteristic and other traits. One of the cons they found with this accessibility as that users became confused and overwhelmed with choice, as they found themselves endlessly ‘shopping’ for potential partners. Matching yourself with another was also a difference in dating. When using sites, you present yourself with certain traits and descriptions for others to filter you in or out and vice versa. However, this can affect accuracy in compatibility due to one’s ability to change over time, or appear differently in person. Communication is a vital part of dating that can be affected through online methods. Online dating allows you to talk to someone before sometimes on their interests. This allows for a quick analysis of an initial photo before a swipe through a few images if someone catches their eye. This brutal method of dating demonstrates the madness behind judging a book by its covers.

However, the study showed that communicating through a screen lacked information about one and other and that cues for building attraction such as touching are unachievable with can make

the communication unemotional and artificial. The madness behind online dating is the concept of reality. Amongst the happy endings and serious profiles are fakes and criminals, and unlike the many other filters you can choose, fake profiles cannot be easily avoided.

TV Dating. A Bournemouth based company called Speed Dating hosts singles nights at Bar So around 2 to 3 times a month. You must be over 20, but have the opportunity to speed date with a variety of singles through the night. Another venue used by company Speed Dater is The Stable. They offer speed dating events, that are open to certain age groups such as 38-55 or 24-38. There a are a variety of dating websites that offer a filter of the area, which allows people to narrow their search to Bournemouth. This means people can talk and then easily meet up locally if they want to. A website called Meetup also allows people to find groups of people with similar interest such as walking or sightseeing to meet up and enjoy activities together. Most of the profiles include single people, and this therefore offers a slightly different way of online dating. My design will create a style of dating different to anything seen in Bournemouth and will attract a variety of people to date in a mad way.

Site Anlysis. The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Bournemouth is located on Christchurch Road between Bournemouth and Boscombe. Currently known as the Coastline Vineyard church and Europa School of English it is mainly used as a language school. The sun curves around the back of the building from east to west, meaning the back of the building gets the most light, however there is a series of trees behind the car park that may block a lot of the sunlight reaching the windows. In the immediate vicinity there are a variety of buildings consisting mainly of residential and hotels. There is an abundance of flats to house the seaside population so close to the coast. This can be seen in figure 1 the advantage of this is that users of the building can stay in nearby hotels if they have travelled from outside the area, and locals are within a walking distance from the site. Some locals and businesses however my not be happy with the new use of the site for dating purposes as it could drive away family holiday makers, as it may be considered inappropriate. The use of a religious building for this may additionally cause this concern.

11

12 The original Church of Christ, Scientist now sits in an obscure location with no other buildings surrounding it of the same style. Other buildings are old mansions that are converted into hotels or new built flats. Therefore, designing a dating experience in this location increases what people might consider a mad location.

There is a series of bus stops that run along the road with 7 bus services running along Christchurch road from More Bus and Yellow Buses. This form of transport makes the site easily accessible for people around the area. It also has a large front and back carpark, enabling people to use their own transportation. The A338, otherwise known as Wessex Way leads straight into Bournemouth from Ringwood, Southampton, Salisbury and Poole, making it easy for drivers to travel straight into the town and onto Christchurch road. Bournemouth is filled with bike lanes, on main roads and through the centre. The council since 2005 has been trying to make Bournemouth a safe shared space for cyclists in order to reduce increasing traffic in and around town. Bournemouth also has its own train and coach station, making it reachable from further parts of the country. This allows for the dating venue to be accessible from far and wide as well as locally.

Site Sketches. Here are a few sketches of the site from the outside and inside. Whilst we were surveying the site I wanted to capture the space through drawings to remind me along with photos some details of the site. I also added some materials to render my drawings which highlight the key materials used. Externally the building is made from red brick. And internally, there is dark parquet wood throughout. This dark wood adds to the gothic feel of the hall along with the large black metal chandeliers.

organisation formed in 1916 as a branch to the Mother Church in Boston, however it wasn’t built until 1926 by W. J. Dacombe. The purpose of the church was to provide services such as church services, a Sunday school, free lectures and a reading room. Although self-governed it followed the Manual of the Mother Church.

Upon walking to the site you immediately notice the historical difference and development around the church. Moderatley set back off the road, it is grand and symmetrical, an aesthetically pleasing buildings. It is surrounded by large flat buildings that are a combination of hotels and residencies. This demonstrates

architecture that was developed during a time when principles of civic design were receiving little public attention. The aim of the design was to not only return to the English tradition of urban architecture but also to create an appropriate hall to connect with a religious body. Christian science had rejected many traditional design aspect of the Christian church such as a spire and an altar, which was replaced by a large auditorium with a Rostrum where speakers address the congregation. This arrangement therefore allowed for a central organ that also defied traditional churches, where an organ is generally placed at the side.

There is a long drive around the building with a large open space with benches at the front, which follows around to the back of the building, where you can find a large car park with spaces for multiple cars. Additionally, there is a small children’s play area, set in the back corner. The main entrance appeared to be along the left hand side, which takes you directly to the reception. From her you have access to the old Sunday school, which is now a cafeteria, and the auditorium, which has the same purpose. At the top of the stairs on either side are two small storage rooms and a medium size classroom. Around the corner is another set of stairs that leads to a corridor with a series classroom. These are made of temporary walls that were used to create more private spaces. In the first two classrooms closest to the north face, there are large skylights with metal frames. The first floor holding these rooms features a blue carpet throughout, with plain white walls. A series of ceiling beams can also be seen throughout that are part of the supporting structure On the other side of the north wall, above the auditorium are two small classrooms with stairs on the inside walls leading down to the ground floor. The main auditorium features the highest ceiling of the building, and is decorated with geometric square ceiling moulding.

Far left; Art Deco lighting features that reflect the buildings era. The long lights enhance the curved ceiling. From this hangs 6 large black gothic chandeliers which draw your attention immediately upwards. Surrounding the space are 12 arched windows, 6 on each side. They have a stain glass detail and again emphasise the height of the room. The large space is drawn towards the listed stage on the south face of the room, which is made of wood and is bordered by a low gold railing. Long curtains hang centrally at the back of the stage covering the space where the original organ was placed. At the other end of the room is a temporary stage that reaches from both east and west side of the building. This creates a higher seating area that backs onto the front entrance of the Church. The front entrance is grand through its height. The similar height ceiling is curved with a semi-circle window at each end. Long pendent lights hang from the ceiling which exaggerate the height. Either side of the hall are bathrooms which have lower ceilings. In here a more detailed stone floor is found, featuring tones of cream, red and grey. Centrally are two large front doors with a porch between them, and two stain glass windows either side. The internal door has glass panels whilst the exterior is made from solid wood.

Left; back wall of the main hall on the stage. Below; a view of the whole room from front to back. The historical age of this room shows through the ceiling features and gothic lights.

Outline Brief. My design will be for young adults who wish to experience a new way of dating in a safe environment. The concept of online dating that I have chosen will challenge the idea of normality and dating. From my site and building analysis I feel I can reflect the language of the building, which is symmetrical and has religious connotations, in my design. From my site visit I have also realised the size of the space and want to use this to its full potential. This may include exploring the mezzanine possibility. I have recognised that dating in Bournemouth needs a boost, particularly as there is a large amount of young people, due to the universities and migration for work potentials. Therefore, my design must appeal to young clients.

Here is some layout development from my sketch book. It shows the process I went through to realise my final design. I sketched a lot of ideas and explored different ideas to get to a final resolution. Below shows how I came to use the language of the building with a cross mezzanine. The previous page shows before hand developments.

Layout Development.

45

Red Light District, Amsterdam. The red-light district in Amsterdam is a part of an urban area where

design is the glass room concept. I think putting an individual on display

a concentration of prostitution and sex-oriented businesses, such as

makes the vulnerable and open to everyone to view, alike an online profile.

sex shops, strip clubs, and adult theatres are found. The reason this has inspired my work is through the dehumanisation of people that are put on display in windows like objects or clothes. They stand in front of a glass window in a tiny room for all eyes to see and for clients to select and pay for. This concept is a physical representation of some online dating processes where you judge a profile and select who you want to date. Another aspect of the red-light district that I want to carry through in my

46

Paco Rabanne, Advert.

This advert for Paco Rabanne's XS fragrance for men features a one-

and watch somebody on the other side without them knowing. This

way mirror. Through this woman can look at a man in a millionaire style

demonstrates the point that you never know who's on the other end

bathroom on the other side without him knowing. This concept inspires

and what they are doing. This has inspired my design through the use

me due to its invasion of ones' privacy and stalker-like situation. The

of one-way glass to seek out a potential partner.

one-way mirror allows the woman to gaze at the man and judge his looks whilst he remains unaware. This concept is similar to online dating where anyone can look at your profile at any time and stare at you, the difference being it is not physical. Another mad situation that can take place through the internet is when stalkers can hack webcams

47 Naked attraction is a recent show where an individual can select a date based on their physical appearance through process of elimination. Participants are placed naked in pods and slowly in each round more of their body is revealed. This leaves them in a vulnerable position to be scrutinized in depth about their looks, until the individual finally gets naked as well for the final round. I am inspired by the pods in this show as they put people in a spotlight position where all focus is on them. The different coloured pods is all that differentiates the position they are in compared to the others. This idea inspires me to design a space where people are isolated and put in a position to be looked at and judged by people surrounding them.

Naked Attraction, TV Show.

Dating in the Dark, TV Show. Dating in the Dark is a show were two people enter a room which is in complete darkness. They then have the opportunity to get to know each other physically and emotionally, without the prejudice of judgment on looks. This concept opposes others like Naked Attraction as it focuses on personalities. Taking away someone sight sense can help them focus on the other person without any distractions. By bringing this concept into my design, it is another way of creating a mad scenario for daters. Darkness can additionally dehumanize the clients as they are interpreted as a voice rather than a being.

48

49

Take Me Out, TV Show. Take me out is a game show where an eligible man is judged by 30 girls. They keep their light on for someone they like and turn it of otherwise. In the final round the roles reverse. I am inspired by this concept because it demonstrates a brutal way of selecting a date. Turning your light off for someone based on their looks is demoralising and shaming, which can knock their confidence. I want to replicate this process through using adjustable lighting in my design that can be controlled by the clients. They will be able to use lighting to reflect what they are feeling towards another person.

50

This cafĂŠ shows an original Art Deco interior which is full of glass, mirrors and chandeliers. In this drawing, you can see the tall pillars that are key features to the space and use long mirrors to enhance their height and reflect light around the room. The tall ceiling is similar to the one in the main hall of my building, therefore I want to use these features to enhance the space. The building is also from the Art Deco era and it is important to utilise this in order to maintain the building and allow its age to be recognised. In the right-hand photo, the cafĂŠ has been modernised to suit todays design taste, which I will similarly do.

GreshamVenezia Cafe.

The American Resturant, Missouri, 1974, By Warren Platner. This precedent shows a later design that demonstrates Art Deco interiors. Platner utilises the tall and light spaces through decorative pillars with lighting features. They are slim and elegant in order to not block any of the natural light from the exterior curtain walls. When the natural light fades, the features glow warm and dull to create a romantic mood in the space. The materials and furniture are sophisticated and use rich colours to emphasise the atmosphere. I want to explore this in my design to create a romantic mood.

The BlueBird, London This restaurant has inspired my project through its symmetrical shaped space. The photo below demonstrates this and shows how the ceiling is higher in the centre. It presents almost a cross shape with is a theme I will include in my designs, to reflect the history of the church. The building is currently symmetrical, which I want to retain. The exposed steel beam structure is also interested and is something I want to look at when adding a mezzanine to the hall, where there are double height spaces. The copper and blue tones are also something I will consider as orange can be associated with romance as a less harsh tone of red.

52

IM Pei’s Museum of Islamic Art, Quatar. This precedent stood out to me because despite its purpose as

a museum, I think that is has church like attributes, one being symmetry. The photo below shows the symmetrical ceiling with a

round suspended light. This feature reminds me of the ceilings in the centre of churches where a spire usually starts. The photo of the

exterior additionally reminds me of a church as everything leads towards it and up the step-like façade to the highest point. This element of definite symmetry is something I really want to include.

54

The Restaurant by Caesarstone and Tom Dixon

The restaurant inspires my design though its similar change of use. It was converted from an old church into a restaurant in Milan. I am interested in this design as it uses elements of the church in its new design, which can be seen in the bottom left photo. They have used an alter/ archway as a decorative feature in the restaurant which is something I am trying to replicate. I also like the modern style dĂŠcor that they have contrasted with the space, against the old stone of the church.

55

Concept Models

These concept models show a geometric idea I had for the profile space. I looked at making triangles of glass to display customers, and lighting effects from day to night. However, upon making these models I realised that a more practical and dehumanising design would be a cube, as then it would appear that people are being displayed more like products in boxes.

57

58

Concept Sketches. Here is the development work of my sketchbook where I started to explore different design ideas. On the previous page is an idea for the profile room. I want to use glowing glass boxes to display people like the red light district. I have placed the boxes along the edge to create a catwalk type path down the centre of the room. On this page are some restaurant sketches. I have looked at an art deco style like my precedent the Blubird and The American Restaurant. I have used pinks and purples to create a romantic atmopshere, and bold direct lighting from a free standing light to focus attention of the particular seating area. I have sketched an idea of booth seating as it creates a comfortable and private space for couples to sit in.

59

60

On the previous page I have sketched a mezzanine concept section. You can see the seating area from above and the bar arae below. Again I have used large curved booths to create a comfortable atmosphere to relax the customers, who may be nervous on a first date. Next to this is a sketch of the side of the restaurant. I have explored the use of curved edges for the mezzanine banister to reflect the arched windows in the main hall, and the language of the building. In the centre, below the mezzanine, is the bar which keeps attention on the centre of the room. On this page I have looked again at a way of lighting people up in boxes and a better layout for viewing them. Being able to walk around the box is important to make the person inside feel uncomfortable.

61

This design shows a geometric idea for the mezzanine. I have decided to make the banister of the mezzanine straight instead of arched for a sleeker look. I have also created a rectangle raised area in the centre of the mezzanine to create a significant area. This will have a lit edge to create a hovering glow effect. This will also hold a booth area, bringing the design on downstairs onto the mezzanine for a fluid design.

62

Here I have developed my idea of a mezzanine to a more geometric design with straight banisters. However, to keep the language of the arched windows, I have created a round paltform are of seating in the centre above the bar. This will be lit with a round lighting feature like a halo. I have brought the idea of nature into the design to relax people and make them feel free and outside after an intense dating experience.

63

Sample Boards. Exploration

I have looked into a lot of colours and materials that would be appropriate for my design. A dating space should evoke romance and mystery, and in the case of this design, it should appear innocent as its hiding the dangers from underneath alike internet dating. The first scheme I looked at was using natural colours like baby pink and olive green. This is because they are clam and summery which will create a ‘summer romance’ vibe. I like to include a variety of textures because I feel it sparks all of our senses and can make you feel comfortable or uncomfortable in a space. I chose soft fur to create a warm cosy feeling. Using faux animal skin is another element of this scheme as it hints luxury, but with a rough feel. Faux croc skin therefore will make people feel like they are in an expensive environment, and make the date seem more romantic and unpredictable. The pattern in marble stone can additionally create this feeling of luxury, especially this variety of pink tones, which appears rare and bespoke. The overall feel of this mood board is romantic and subtle, but I feel that I need more rich tones to be included.

64

This page shows a scheme similar to the previous, but with more exaggerated colour and textures. I have added a latex material which may create a more playful and exciting atmosphere and less associated with romance. The bold gold tiles also move away from romance and has a richer feel. Terrazzo stone incorporates all the colours of other materials, and has a rougher appearance. This scheme appeals more to no serious relationships which is the aim of my design. However, I do want a more romantic scheme that creates a respectable and luxurious atmosphere.

65

For this scheme I have completely changed the colours to a bold copper orange and navy. I have stuck with similar textures such as marble and fur, as I like the moods these evoke. I am particularly interest in the faux ostrich skin texture, as it is a rare and expensive material. The dotted surface stands out against the rest and will be the unique part of the design. The reason I looked at orange as a scheme is because red is considered a romantic colour. However, I feel sometimes It can alos be seen negatively. Whereas orange is similar to red but less harsh and ‘blood-like’.

66 To develop this scheme further I changed the marble to a darker colour which creates more mystery and luxury, rather than the icy appearance of white marble. I also added another croc skin texture to maximise the rough feeling of the space. I like this scheme as it is filled with vibrancy and luxury, but I feel it is on the edge of romantic.

67 This final scheme I have developed has an array of feeling including luxury and romance. Purple is seen as a romantic colour as it is deep and smooth. I looked as a satin material that presents these moods, as it appears to run and flow elegantly, but with depth. It reminds me of smooth melted chocolate, which is romantic and mysterious. A variety of stones also create a rich interior as it is known as an expensive material. It will also demonstrate the power and size of the tall building through echoes. Due to the buildings history I have looked at some materials that boast art deco patterns, like the green tiles. A hint of this adds detail to the design in an elegant way.To brighten up the scheme I have explored champagne gold as another colour. Hint of this show through the marble and will be used it fine details, adding a hint of elegance.

69

Restaurant Collage - This collage shows a design idea for my restaurant dating space. Purples and pinks form the main atmosphere of the space, as well as symmetry. I have created a symmetrical staircase and a repetative floor pattern among other aspects to create this.

70

Profile Room Collage - Here I have created a romantic idea through warm colours and luxurious styles. The profile pods are made from glass to display people like objects on a platform. This concept collage helped me visualise the dehumanisation of people placed in these pods and the isolation from the rest of the room that occurs.

71

Stalking Room Collage - This collage shows the stalking room that features a cube with a two way mirror perimeter. The luxurious room features a darker atmosphere to replicate the dark side of the concept.

72

Bathroom Collage - This collage shows how I have used the same design collage throughout even into the bathrooms, to continue the theme.

73

When guest arrive at the dating entrance they walk into an enticing entrance and reception ready

They first enter the Profile Room, which aims to replicate the concept of online dating profiles.

to start the experience.

Here some of the group will be placed into the profile pods of glass to be gazed at by the others. Whilst wondering around they can judge and choose potential partners to take through to the next round. This experience should last between 10 minutes to half an hour in which time, they can sit and relax on the sofas and just stare at the ‘profiles’, as you would at a computer at home.

Story Board.

74

Up the stairs and on to the stalking stage, the profile customers will now step into a larger communal pod made of two way mirrors. From the inside of the pod they will be able to see their own reflection and nothing from the outside. However, in the surrounding room will stand the other customers who will now be able to ‘stalk’ those in the pod without them knowing, another attribute to the madness of online dating. From here customers can chose a partner to take to the dark room.

In the dark rooms partners have a chance talk and interact with each other for the first time. Being in a dark room takes away visual senses and therefore heightens others. The partners that has been selected will not know what the together looks like, and the other will have a limited recollection of them. This identifies with the online concept of talking through messages, which can be impersonal.

From here Partners will then decide if they like each other and if so they can go on a first date in the final stage, which is the restaurant. Here the couple can take part in a normal date situation, which often derives from an online dating experience.

and realise the madness of the internet. I feel that if people experience this physically, it will make them more aware of the dark side of the internet.

I was inspired by TV dating game shows such as Dating in the Dark and Naked Attraction as well as interiors like Blue Bird, The Museum of Islamic Art, the Restaurant and more. I chose a pastel

that people see as mad. MADates comprises of 4 main spaces; Profile Room, Stalking Room, Dark Room and the Restaurant. Upon entering the experience, clients will first enter the profile room and be able to have a look around other people’s bodies inside a cube. Then they will be able to turn the lights off of the people they don’t like, like closing a window on a screen. Moving through to the next stage is the stalking room. Here the selected few will stand inside a two-way mirror cube and be ‘stalked’ by others on the outside. They will then be able to enter a dark room

Final Sample Boards. My final material schemes show the restaurant and dating space materials. I have used similar ones for both including white marble, pink velvets and wood floors. However, I have used different coloured and patterned marble tiles in each. In the restaurant I have used white marble with gold metal detailing. And in the dating room I have used black and white marble arranged diagonally as tiles. These will be custom made for the design.

Restaurant .

I have also used a darker purple velvet in the dating rooms to create a more mysterious atmosphere.

This model is a section model of a bar corner. In this you can see through into the shelves of the bar and into the bar frame itself. This shows the detail of how the sides fit together on top if each other. I have used white foam board to represent this. I have used brown card over the top to shows the fixed marble stone top that covers the surface. On the opposite page I have shown a more in depth model of how the bar is fixed together and connected in the surfaces. I have also shown how the shelves fit on top of each other .

92

Section Model.

93

Plan Model. This model is a section from a plan view of the bar corner. It shows in detail the adjustable shelf pins that hold up the shelves in the cupboards. I have used the same materials as the previous model to create a fluid representation of the detail.

94

96

Renders. This render is of the lounge space in the restaurant. It demonstrates the height of the space clearly which I have enhanced with long hanging lights. The atmosphere is romantic and airy, which is needed after the intense experience of the dating game. The tree and plants bring in the calm sense of outdoors to give a natural feel to the envurp0eiemtn after an unnatural process of dating. It brings people closer to the outside world after a dark experience of online dating. The velvet sofas exaggerate the subtle glimpses of pink in the tall marble walls, and the space is looked over by tall light windows. A faint and light curtain runs along the window wall alluding to privacy and disrupting the harsh sunlight. The large curved floor lamps emphases the arched windows and tackle the issue of double height spaces over these tables, without being in the way of head space. The light wood flooring additionally adds to the airiness of the space. After being in a claustrophobic environment of a dark room or a glass pod, the customers need this space to relax and feel free.

97

This render shows the downstairs restaurant seating area. The pink booths create a romantic and comfy place for customers to eat in. each table has its own lighting to create an intimate and personal space. The marble surroundings lift the mezzanine ceiling up and keeps the space light and not overpowering. The bold pink seats are a focus point that draw customers to sit in. I haven’t overcrowded the area with unnecessary furniture or materials because all the focus should be on the relationships. Below I have put an image of the plan to show where this area is.

98

This render shows a seating area on the mezzanine. In the centre features a raised platform area of seating which is highlighted by a subtly strip lighting feature around the base. Overhead is a round light. Both of these features reflect the language of the building as a halo and reflect the original use of the building as a church. Similarly, to the downstairs, I have placed elements of the environment on the mezzanine like the tree, to create a relaxed atmosphere.

100 On the left page is a render of the profile room. The atmosphere
