[ Chapters 1-9 ] Before You Read Sharing Ideas With a partner, discuss different situations that can cause overwhelming sadness, such as the death or absence of a loved one. How do people express their sadness over a great loss? What helps them keep going and find purpose in life, in spite of their sadness?

Setting a Purpose Read to find out about a young girl who experiences a great loss.

The Aleuts At the opening of the novel, outsiders called Aleuts visit Karana's island. The Aleuts were native people who lived on the Alaska Peninsula and Aleutian Islands to the far north. The Aleuts lived in small villages and hunted various sea mammals. The first Europeans to encounter the Aleuts were the Russians. In 1784, Russian fur traders arrived to hunt for sea otters, which were abundant in the region. They were quickly joined by British and U.S. fur traders. Competition for hunting grounds was fierce, and huge numbers of sea otters were killed. To find more otters, fur traders and hunters traveled far down the Pacific Coast.

The Time and Place The novel takes place on a remote California island in the mid-1800s. The setting was inspired by San Nicolas Island, one of the Channel Islands. The Channel Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean less than one hundred miles off the coast of southern California and separated from the main-land by the San Pedro and Santa Barbara Channels. These islands are home to a rich variety of sea birds and sea mammals, including sea lions and elephant seals, which thrive in its waters. San Nicolas, the outermost of the southern Channel Islands has an area of about 22 square miles. Most of the island is made up of sand dunes, so the island has virtually no trees but is surrounded by a thick "forest" of giant kelp, a seaweed with large brown leaves. The kelp beds attract many forms of life, including rockfish, lobster, and sea otters. The Channel Islands have a mild year-round climate and are generally windy. Like mainland California, the islands are shaken by earthquakes, caused by sudden movements in the earth’s crust.

Island of the Blue Dolphins

[ Chapters 1-9 ] Character Motives A motive is a need or a desire that causes a person to act. Sometimes the author states a character’s motives. At other times, a reader must infer, or figure out, a character’s motives from details that the author gives.

WHY MOTIVE MATTERS As people, we’re often judged by what we do. To a large extent, we are what we do. In a book, as much as in life, a person’s actions are crucial. Readers want to understand this person by seeing what he does. However, often, it’s a character’s motive that matters even more. Creating a character who acts in exciting and larger-than-life ways is wonderful, but unless this character also has a reason for these actions, the writer will ultimately fail to capture readers’ attention. Giving a character a motive is vital.

DIRECTION Remember what you have read in Chapters 1~9, and use the chart to write in the motives in each situation.

Setting a Purpose Read to find out how Karana makes use of the resources available to her on the island.

Elephant Seals One of the largest animals on Karana's island is the elephant seal, also called the sea elephant. Like other seals, the elephant seal is a powerful swimmer with a streamlined body and four short limbs that end in flippers. The elephant seal received its name because of its large size—males weigh almost four tons—and because of the chunky but flexible snout that hangs down over the mouth of the male. During the breeding mason, the males, called bulls, frequently engage in fights as they establish their territories and try to attract females. Elephant seals spend about 80% of their lives in the ocean and are able to hold their breath for about 100 minutes. Elephant seals can dive to 1,550 meters (5,085 feet) below the ocean's surface. 41

Island of the Blue Dolphins

Writing an Expository Essay The purpose of the expository essay is to explain a topic in a logical and straightforward manner. The topic of your writing assignment today is superstition in different cultures. The basic five-paragraph essay structure, which you have probably used many times by this point, works extremely well for an opinion essay. An opinion essay exists to prove your main point – your thesis. This should be clearly stated in your opening paragraph. Don’t leave the reader to guess what your position is on the issue – make a clear stand!

✎ STRUCTURE [ Paragraph One : The Introduction ] Here you introduce the topic of your essay and state the essay’s main idea -- the point you are trying to make or prove. This paragraph should include your thesis statement plus three reasons why you believe this statement to be true.

[ Paragraphs Two, Three, and Four: The Body ] These are the body of your essay. Remember back in Paragraph One, you gave three reasons for your opinion. Three reasons equals three body paragraphs. Each of the body paragraphs should take one of your reasons and explain it in more detail. You can use examples and illustration, cause-and-effect reasoning, comparison/contrast, or other methods of development to support your argument. Any statements you make that would cause a reader to say, “Wait, how do you know that’s true?” need to be backed up with support. Each body paragraph is made up of five or more sentences that develop your single, clear idea.

[ Paragraph Five : The Conclusion ] Former Newfoundland premier Joey Smallwood once said about giving speeches: "First I tell them what I'm going to tell them, then I tell them, then I tell them what I told them." In the conclusion, sum up your argument by restating your thesis statement and reminding the reader what your three reasons were.

✎ TOPIC The story talks about several superstitions, such as not using your secret name often (Chapter 1) or women not being able to make weapons (Chapter 9). Discuss a superstition from your own culture. Give background information on it (for example its origin, what it means, etc), how people in your society perceive it, and whether you do or don’t believe it (giving reasons to support this). You can discuss more than one superstition if you wish.

✎ PREWRITING: Generate Ideas Before you begin writing your essay, you should take some time to flesh out your ideas and get some things down on paper. Listing, freewriting, clustering, and questioning can help you to develop ideas for your essay. First, jot down some major ideas for your topic. Then brainstorm details for those ideas.

✎ PROOFREADING Do a final proofreading of your paper by double-checking your grammar, spelling, organization, and the clarity of your ideas.

Island of the Blue Dolphins

[ CHAPTER 20-29 ] Before You Read Sharing Ideas What mental and emotional changes do people typically undergo as they grow from adolescence into adulthood? Think about how people at different levels of maturity might cope with fear, hardship, disappointment, and personal disagreements. How would a child, in comparison with a teenager, deal with these things? How would an adult? Consider reasons why their abilities to cope might differ.

Setting a Purpose Read to find out how Karana continues to change in response to her experiences during the story.

The Channel Islands Today Today, five of the Channel Islands off the coast of California make up the Channel Islands National Park— San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Barbara, Anacapa, and Santa Cruz. Most of the islands have primitive campgrounds and hiking trails. San Nicolas, where Island of the Blue Dolphins takes place, and San Clemente are owned today by the U.S. Navy and are used for military training and research. Santa Catalina, also called Catalina Island, is a popular tourist destination and close to one million people travel there every year.

Did You Know? The plot of a novel is the sequence of events in the story. Most plots unfold in five steps: • In the exposition, the author introduces the characters and sets up the conflict. • The rising action includes events in which the conflict is developed. • The climax is the point of greatest suspense. • The falling action includes events that happen after the climax. • The resolution is the final outcome of the conflict. In Island of the Blue Dolphins, the exposition is presented in Chapters 1-9 which tell how Karana ends up on the island alone. Chapters 10-19 provide the rising action, showing Karana confronting the problem of living alone. The last section, which you are about to read, presents the climax, the falling action, and the resolution. On page 105, you will label the story plot events to the illustrations to test your knowledge.

Writing an Opinion Essay The basic five-paragraph essay structure, which you have probably used many times by this point, works extremely well for an opinion essay. An opinion essay exists to prove your main point – your thesis. This should be clearly stated in your opening paragraph. Don’t leave the reader to guess what your position is on the issue – make a clear stand!

Next, develop your argument in the body of your essay. Each paragraph should contain a single, clear idea (the “topic sentence”) that supports your point of view or your main idea. You can use examples and illustration, cause-and-effect reasoning, comparison/contrast or other methods of development to support your argument. Each body paragraph is made up of five or more sentences that develop your single, clear idea.

✎ STRUCTURE [ Paragraph One : The Introduction ] Here you state the main idea of your entire essay -- the point you are trying to make or prove. This paragraph should include your thesis statement plus three reasons why you believe this statement to be true.

[ Paragraphs Two, Three and Four: The Body ] These are the body of your essay. Remember back in Paragraph One, you gave three reasons for your opinion? Three reasons, three body paragraphs. Each of the body paragraphs should take one of your reasons and explain it in more detail, citing sources where necessary. Any statements you make that would cause a reader to say, “Wait, how do you know that’s true?” need to be backed up with support.

[ Paragraph Five : The Conclusion ] Former Newfoundland premier Joey Smallwood once said about giving speeches: "First I tell them what I'm going to tell them, then I tell them, then I tell them what I told them." In conclusion, sum up your argument by restating your thesis statement and reminding the reader what your three reasons were.

✎ TOPIC 1. Did you find the story sad or inspiring or both? Explain. 2. The qualities that have helped her to make a life for herself include resourcefulness, courage, creativity, and flexibility. Point out three characteristics that were vital to her survival. 3. Discuss ways in which Karana might be considered a pioneer. Symbolically, Karana forged a new life for herself when, near the beginning of the book, she destroyed the village where her tribe once lived. As a part of moving into her new life, she broke the rules of her tribe to make the weapons she needed for survival. How is Karana a model for women who, today, are entering professions that once were occupied only by men?

✎ PREWRITING First, jot down some major ideas for your topic. Then brainstorm details for those ideas.

✎ PROOFREADING Do a final proofreading of your paper double-checking your grammar, spelling, organization, and the clarity of your ideas. 116
