Editor’s Note Hello everyone,
W
editorial
elcome to the June issue of dREam. The midyear issue has always been my favourite one to work on, mainly because of the many exciting events that happen during this time of the year. From the much anticipated graduation ceremony to the myriad of arts events happening on campus, there’s lots for the editorial team to cover! This year, RP hosted its fifth and by far, the largest batch of graduates at the graduation ceremony. A total of 2,953 graduates received their diploma certificates during the 3-day event which was officiated by Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Mr S Iswaran. Even though the dREam team was there to capture the proud moment, we couldn’t resist the temptation to invite a fresh graduate to write about his account of the ceremony. Read more about his personal experience at the graduation ceremony as you reminisce on your days in RP. In the same space that hosted the biggest event on RP’s academic calendar, dancers graced TRCC’s theatre with eclectic dance pieces that resonated with Mark Twain’s famous words, ‘dance like nobody’s watching’. Themed ‘Bold and Beyond’, Momentum Dance Festival 2010
left a blazing trail of dynamism and inspiration for those who dance, and those who simply enjoy watching the art form. If you missed the action during the festival, re-live the moments in A Night to Remember. As we close one chapter of life, another one begins. With the end of our new graduates’ academic journey in RP, a new one of job hunting and career building begins. Check out Your CV is your sales brochure for career advices by experts and nab that job you’ve always wanted. In To Market, To Market, we introduce shops started up by our entrepreneurial graduates. Check out the best places to hunt for some chic work wear without burning a hole in your pocket. I mean, who isn’t in for a good bargain? With all those events covered, we hope you enjoy reading this issue of dREam and on behalf of the dREam team, I would like to send our heartiest congratulations to the 2010 graduands. If you’re receiving dREam for the first time, it means you’ve just joined the ranks of those who have created an inextricable link with RP. Warm wishes, Celine
A new chapter begins:
Graduation Ceremony 2010 A Written by: Nurhafiza Ahmad
fter 3 memorable years in Republic Polytechnic, we have all finally graduated! This year was supposedly the largest number of graduates with a total of 2,953 graduates received their diploma certificates within the three days! Three years had passed so quickly and I could still remember the very first day that I stepped in to RP. Even though I felt nervous, shy and scared, I managed to make some friends and these people have become my best friends up till today. The friendships fostered over the year are what motivates me to study hard and kept me going strong the past three years. 13th May 2010 was the day that all year 3 students have been waiting for. Many graduands gathered around TRCC with their parents while waiting to be ushered to the hall. At 9.30am sharp, we were addressed our Principal, Mr Yeo Li Pheow. This was followed by an inspiring speech by Guest-of-Honour, Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Ministry of Education, Mr S Iswaran. Sitting in The Republic Cultural Centre Theatre, I felt a great sense of achievement. It is hard to believe that my three years of education in RP has come to an end. As I reminisce the days spent in school, my friends and peers were invited up on stage to collect their diploma/certificate from Mr S Iswaran. Once all the diploma certificates were distributed, invited guests were invited to the reception while the graduands were asked to collect their yearbook. After the ceremony all of us were gathered outside the theatre. With the mint diplomas in our hands, we exchanged congratulatory messages and embraces. The end of our academic journey in RP means that a new one of career development has just begun. Congratulations to all my friends on their graduation and let’s charge forth on this new journey in life!

LIFE Activities
T
o many students, the abbreviation SLA would simply mean ‘Student Life Activities’, but to me, SLA means more than mere activities for students. SLA represents, well in fact, the highlight of our lives in the Polytechnic. SLA breaks the monotonous routine of everyday school life as it provides a myriad of activities for students to participate in and bring more excitement to the usual school life. Being in our light years, what more would attract us more than doing something to pursue our passion and being a part of a Club or Interest Group? The annual SLA fiesta held on 21st and 22nd of April 2010 showcased the various Interest Groups (IGs) in Republic Polytechnic. A total of 108 booths, located at Agora Halls 3 and 4 were beautifully decorated and music of all genres was played loudly to allure our first year students. As I entered the Agora Halls on the first day of SLA fiesta, School of Hospitality (SOH) booths such as ‘SOHphiscate’, ‘Fuse’ and ‘Jive’ greeted me with vibrant decors and friendly faces. As I manoeuvred my way through the halls, I was amazed by the students’ enthusiasm and creativity. Each booth was designed in a unique way, distinctive of their IGs. The booth decoration ranged from showcasing pictures by Photo IG to images of stars and planets by the Astronomy IG. Floorball IG set up a miniature floorball ring right smack in the middle of the Agora halls and students were invited to give the game a try. The boys from Dragon boat, even went an extra mile of painting themselves gold to signify glory and victory. Student who attended SLA Fiesta 2010 were enthralled by how the various IGs had gone into detail to bring out the best of their IGs. By the end of the first day, various IG committee members commented that the response from interested students was overwhelming. With IG sign-ups closing on the second day of the fiesta, it was not surprising to see Agora Halls 3 and 4 filled with students. Though it had been a tiring two days for most of the clubs and IGs, I believe that all the hardwork was worthwhile as we welcome the new batch of members in our respective Clubs and IGs. A new beginning and more joy, fun and laughter awaits members in each IG! Text by Marella Krista Effendi

Although I have graduated from RP and am currently working, I have never once regretted being a part of the RP mentoring team. Mentoring has become my part time ‘job’, one that is voluntary. Take good care of yourself in the days before the interview. “Play” the interview out in your mind as you would like it to happen and also use relaxation techniques to calm yourself.

Be sure that you are appropriately dressed for your interview, based on the organisation’s culture, as well as the position for which you are interviewing. Also, try to choose your outfit at least the day before the interview to avoid more stress on the actual day.

I
t is now June and winter is upon us down under in Melbourne, we doing our best to stay warm during this midyear exam period! Wish us the best! The RP contingent here is growing strong, and at least count, 40 of us are pursuing studies in Victoria’s capital. This time round, we catch up with another RP pioneer who has been taking the road less travelled. Formerly from the School of Engineering in RP, Michelle Chan is now studying music at the prestigious University of Melbourne. Quite the globe-trotter, Michelle originally hails from Hong Kong, and she has now experienced living in a multitude of cultures in three countries - Hong Kong, Singapore and now, Australia. Bob: Hi Michelle. G’day! How’s it going? Michelle: Hi RP mates! I’m currently in
my final year of reading music at the University of Melbourne. The course title is the Bachelor of Music, and I’m majoring in music performance. Please, don’t ask me about when I’m going to perform or stuff like that. My initial intention was to take a music education degree. To be frank, teaching music is still my first interest. Unfortunately the school no longer offered that option the year I got there, but I now look forward to the final-year
placement at Hello Music School in the coming semester. Going back a few years back to the days studying in RP, I was teaching the piano in Cristofori Music School every weekend. I really miss those days. And yes, I studied Industrial and System Engineering in RP, and was proud to be amongst the pioneer batch of graduates of year 2006. Bob:

Bob: Melbourne is known to be Australia’s cultural capital - are there reasons why you came to Melbourne to study music? Michelle: It’s mainly because of my formal teacher’s recommendation. Her reason was Melbourne is a busy city, yet rich with cultural heritage such as Melbourne Town Hall and The Arts Centre. At the Town Hall, there are quite a number of free music concerts open for the public. Bob: How has life in Melbourne been for you? You have been quite a traveller, moving from Hong Kong, to Singapore, and now Melbourne, how is life different between the 3 places? Michelle: While studying music as my major, I’m required to take breadth subjects which are not related to music. One of the subjects I took last year was cultural studies. To answer the question, these three places are multicultural cities. Hong Kong is a fast changing city where Hong Kong people are also changing themselves to keep pace with the
Bob: Wow, those are great choices, now what about your favourite places here in Melbourne?
Bob: What, in your opinion, are the top 3 things to do for fun in Melbourne? (If you had to recommend 3 things to anyone coming to visit Melbourne)
Bob: Let’s turn back the clock and recall your days in RP. Are there any memories of RP worth reminiscing about?
Michelle: My favourite places in Melbourne are Federation Square and Crown Casino. At Federation Square, there are free live bands performing Jazz and Rock every week. As for Crown, there are many entertainment outlets including food and shopping on top of the casino.
Michelle: I really miss those days in RP where I could voice my opinion in class. The PBL system in RP is highly recommended. This system actually - Han Guk Guan, an authentic korean promotes high interaction among restaurant where most Korean like students as they are encouraged to to go, is located at 13A Victoria St, speak up in class. Michelle: I really enjoyed doing calculations in my previous engineering course very much. However, over time I realised that I am not suitable to work in an office environment. During the days of music teaching in Cristofori Music School, I realised that teaching was important in my life. My students could actually boost my sense of satisfaction if they showed improvement in their playing. While teaching the piano in music school, I realised my musical knowledge and playing technique were way too limited. For that reason, I switched to focusing on studying music.
