FROM THE DESK OF THE SECRETARY-WARDEN The past six months have been a very busy and challenging time for The Graduate Union and Graduate House. While a demand for the conferencing and functions was expected, the interest in these facilities has been overwhelming and consequently Miss Molly Kelly has been employed to handle this aspect of the operations.

Additional housekeeping staff have also been required to cope with the demands of increased accommodation and the necessity for daily cleaning of bedrooms and the general areas.

After some initial tribulations in finding just the right chef, Peter Wills has joined us. I am sure Peter will be a great asset with his extensive experience combined with his positive and unruffled manner.

Our relationship with the University continues to prosper and expand. The new Chancellor, Mr Ian Renard has visited for an informal lunch and tour of the building and we were thrilled to have Professor Glyn Davis address members at the Autumn Dinner.

The Annual General Meeting was held for the first time on Graduate Union premises and was very well attended. The five Special Resolutions were passed by members with the result that membership and use of the facilities can now be offered to a broader range of prospective members, in particular Associate and Corporate members. Our University Graduates Club offers many activities and I am confident members will enjoy the opportunities to socialise and network with other members and friends. I would like to thank all members who showed their confidence in my administration and the new direction by supporting the proposed changes. We all work very assiduously at Graduate House to ensure a viable future for the Graduate Union and it is gratifying when members recognize this and offer their support.

I look forward the continued growth of the Graduate Union and University Graduates Club. I thank you all for your support and continued interest.

With a background in promotion and marketing, of which function and event management has been an integral part, Molly Kelly will be overseeing Graduate House operations generally, concentrating primarily on the conferencing and functions area which have become such an important busy area.

Peter Wills has worked in a broad range of five-star hotels, restaurants and function centres in Australia, Switzerland and England. He has well developed knowledge in all areas of kitchen management and food preparation and presentation.

Molly’s expertise is in hospitality and hotel venues, most recently for Tooheys Victoria (Lion Nathan Australia). As part of the Business Development Team, she implemented effective marketing strategies, organised front of house operations and coordinated functions and events. Trained in ballet since the age of five and a professional ballet dancer from 1989 to 1999, Molly continues her passion for the Arts now as a hobby rather than a career. She believes, however, that the discipline and drive required as a dancer has enhanced her capacity in all other areas of her life.

Peter commenced his training at the Hilton International in London before moving to Switzerland as the Demi-Chef at the Basel Hilton. Since coming to Australia in 1986 he has gained further experience in function catering, spending nine years as Executive Chef at Eight St Georges Road Receptions and Head Chef at Churchers Restaurant in Richmond. Peter has already become an integral part of the team at Graduate House. His sense of humour and lack of ‘artistic temperament’ are much appreciated by everybody.

VALETE Maurice Ainsworth Jackson was born on 28 August 1915 in Coventry, England. His father was killed in France during World War I and was awarded the Military Medal for bravery. His mother died when he was 12 years of age and so Maurice was sent out to Australia to the care of an uncle and aunt. He was enrolled at Trinity Grammar where he completed his secondary education before entering The University of Melbourne. He graduated with Bachelor of Science in 1935, became an Associate of the Australian Chemical Institute in 1941 and completed the Diploma of Analytical Chemistry in 1943, and a Bachelor of Arts in 1946. He was a very musical man and obtained a Performer’s Diploma through Trinity College of Music, London in 1947 for organ playing. He was appointed as a Lecturer in the Chemistry Department of RMIT in 1945 remained in that position until his retirement in 1980. Maurice then began studies part-time at the University Faculty of Music graduating as a Bachelor of Music in 1987 aged 71 years. He was a very talented organist and willingly gave his services when needed to many churches in Melbourne.

Maurice sadly passed away on 6 July 2004 and is survived by his wife Isobel, sons Clive and Ross and three grandchildren.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT Our 93rd Annual General Meeting Annual Report gives qualitative and quantitative information and the highlights of a successful year. I thank you all for the privilege of serving as your President.

Our task in the years ahead is to take these benefits and apply them to the utilization of our new building with innovative programs for our members and students. I am frequently asked, ‘How do you see the future?’ My reply on 3 December in an address Two symbols and our future was that I am optimistic about our future. Optimism is founded as much on faith as on reason. Author Rollo May gave this advice …

The Japanese believe that society must live in harmony with ‘The most effective way to ensure the value of the future is to confront technology. They believe that ‘technology has created what may be the present courageously and constructively’.

Frank A Lees The progress of the new building could not have been achieved without harmony and we should recognize what we have achieved: harmony with our mother University, with our Graduate Union community and within our council and professional staff. Now it is time to move on.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The 93rd Annual General Meeting of The Graduate Union was held on 26 May 2005. Mr Frank Lees, President and Chairman of the meeting, welcomed members and the addressed the meeting. He gave an overview of the preceding year, saying it had been a pivotal year in the history of The Graduate Union. He said that despite construction works, high occupancy had been maintained and thanked the Secretary-Warden and staff for their team work and commitment.

After thanking the President, the Chairman of The Graduate Union, Mr Neil Taylor, updated his published report. He said it had been an outstanding year. He advised of the successful registration of the new Club name which can now be used exclusively by The Graduate Union.

Mr Taylor went on to say that while there are enduring traditions which should be preserved and continued, "there is simply no value in weeping tears for the days that have gone. There is a whole new world opening up to us".

Dr R Gibson, Chairman of the Accounting and Audit Committee, spoke to the financial statements, noting the report contained in The Melbourne Graduate was very comprehensive. He summarized the financial position of The Graduate Union saying that while risk and uncertainty are a part of life, the Union was in a strong financial position with assets of around $12m.

All five Special Resolutions were passed by the meeting, allowing the membership base to be broadened with the introduction of Associate and Corporate Membership of The Graduate Union.

The Returning Officer gave an overview of the election process and announced the results of the election following which the President declared Ms Johann Ruth, Dr R Gibson, Mr A Vriends and Mr D Room elected, their term of office being until 2008. He congratulated the successful candidates and welcomed the new members to Graduate Council.

Antonius John Vriends, BA, LLB

At work or at home, Johann’s life is consumed by the needs of university students. As General Manager at UMPA she connects daily with postgraduate students, resolving issues and providing support. At home in Newport, her partner is studying for a Masters degree at the University of Melbourne, her son is part way through a Bachelors degree and her daughter is to commence university study in 2006.

Tony Vriends has worked in the law for approximately twelve years, now as a barrister, and is accustomed to the dual challenge of running his own business whilst looking after clients. He says it is this experience of understanding and achieving individuals’ needs that he hopes to bring to the Graduate Union. In his leisure time Tony’s interests include home renovations and furniture making. He finds cooking relaxing and is known for his excellent risotto. His greatest joy, however, is his family with whom he spends as much time as possible.

As a member of Graduate Council he hopes to make life easier in any way he can for residents whom he would like to feel free to contact him if they have any issues with which he can be of assistance.

Social life too is very much connected to university life. Good friends made at Monash University, visiting creative art performances and installations and ferrying family members to hockey matches frequently played at Melbourne University Sport, consume most of her spare time. She believes that her Graduate Union responsibilities fit right in with this lifestyle. Away from University pursuits, the Bulldogs AFL football team are her passion.

Darren Hamilton Room, BA, DipSocStuds Darren Room has been a Life Member of the Graduate Union since 1964 and on House Board for two years. Retired in 1991 from the State Public Service after 32 years service, he is now a self-funded retiree, a keen follower of the Stock Market and attends the meetings of several companies.

His many lifelong interests include trams and trains – he is a member of Puffing Billy and the Australian Railway Historical Society. Darren is also a keen cyclist and former motorcyclist having travelled widely in North America and Europe by motorcycle.

He enjoys train travel above all and was a passenger on the first Ghan from Darwin to Alice Springs and also on the first public tram with restored locomotive G42 on the Puffing Billy Railway. He is also a life member of the National Trust with a keen interest in church history.

RESIDENTS AT GRADUATE HOUSE Residents are thrilled with the upgrading of resident facilities. The new plasma television makes watching an enjoyable experience. The new comfortable retro couches and armchairs also add to the atmosphere. The new Graduate House certainly gives a sense of new excitement for residents. The well-presented dining hall, new lounge area and bar area all add to the comfort of staying at Graduate House and the improved dining menu certainly adds to the dining pleasure.

The different mix of nationality, culture, race, educational and professional background always means interesting conversational topics and the friendships that one makes at Graduate House are great for residents travelling overseas. Graduate House provides a pleasant, stress-free environment for postgraduates and researchers where, by sharing their social activities and their problems and achievements, they form long-lasting friendships.

Mee Len Chye Associate Professor, Department of Botany, University of Hong Kong: Graduate House resident in 1982-86; Mee Len Chye was again in-residence May 2005. She returned to Graduate House this May after an absence of 19 years. She tells us, "I was recently awarded an Edward Clarence Dyason Universitas 21 Fellowship to visit my research collaborator at The University of Melbourne. I did not have to think twice as to where I should seek short-term accommodation.

From my experience in Graduate House as a postgraduate student in the 1980s, I was well aware that it provided accommodation for short-term academic visitors other than postgraduate students.I first arrived at Graduate House from Malaysia in 1982 to enrol as a PhD candidate.

It is interesting to note that as a House Scholar I paid a mere $70 per week in 1982. I was in residence for altogether four years. It was very convenient to have breakfast and dinner provided as this gave me time to focus on my research and there were lots of other

residents for company and one met people from all around the world.

Looking back, my time spent at Graduate House was indeed a rewarding experience. I acquired the ability to detect accents of people from various countries and can now recognise where a person originates, by accent. Of activities with house residents, most memorable were trips to Wilson’s Prom and along the Great Ocean Road, weekend cooking sessions and the dinner outings. I am pleased to note that activities still abound and a friendly atmosphere resides in the House.

On this visit, I have noticed how the facilities have improved, with it being possible to have a bedroom with bathroom attached. I am particularly impressed with the improved security and the lighting in the new building The renovated weekend kitchen is well-equipped and the chef has presented some very good meals incorporating Asian dishes, a welcome addition for those of us who miss home food. Indeed I have been very fortunate to have had this opportunity to revisit the University of Melbourne and Graduate House on this Dyason Universitas 21 Fellowship.

James Rossetti James Rossetti is currently studying for his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Geology at The University of Melbourne, where he will be focusing on the study of volcanoes. He also works part-time as a duty manager for a YMCA Sports Leisure Centre in Melbourne, which has swimming, aerobics and gym

facilities. He says that doing all of this means that he has to stay very fit and working out at the gym and martial arts tie in well as pastime sports. James is very outgoing and enjoys socialising, as witnessed at the recent Christmas in July party, when Frank Sinatra appeared, looking very much like James, and crooned his way through the evening.

OUR MEMBERS IN THE NEWS GLOBAL HEALTH INSTITUTE NAMED TO HONOUR EMINENT RESEARCHER The University of Melbourne is establishing the Nossal Institute for Global Health, a new research node named in honour of one of the University's most eminent medical researchers, Professor Sir Gustav Nossal. [Sir Gustav is a Patron of the Graduate Union's Building Appeal]. He retired in 1996 as Director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, and as Professor of Medical Biology at the University.

The University and its Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences have committed $7.5 million over five years to create the Institute, which will build on the existing world-class expertise of the University and its affiliates in child health, mental health, women's health, and vaccines to drive improvements in global health, particularly in the Asia Pacific region. Several international service programs undertaken by the Australian International Health Institute, a not-for-profit organization of the University, will be incorporated into the new Institute. These programs include relief and training programs implemented this year in tsunami-affected Banda Aceh in Indonesia and Galle Sir Gustav Nossal in Sri Lanka. USA INTERNSHIP David Price was with us for two weeks in July, during summer vacation in the northern hemisphere. He is studying at Indiana University for a Marketing degree with a minor in Psychology and Entrepreneurship. He is in Australia under the International Education for Students scheme with a group of 42 other students from the USA. During his stay the group travelled to Sydney on a sightseeing tour and spent a weekend at the Grampians National Park and another weekend driving along the Great Ocean Road to Port Campbell where he stayed overnight. David says he has found the Australian city life to be very similar to that of American cities but the Australian personality to be somewhat more laid back. He says Americans live to work while Australians work to live. At Graduate House David has been part of the daily operations and his help has been particularly valuable with the many functions and seminars conducted during the period of his stay here.

GRADUATE HOUSE FAREWELLS REBECCA BALLARD Rebecca’s expertise in marketing and function organization has assisted the Graduate Union during a period of transformation and transition. She has been an invaluable member of the Graduate House team and a particularly important member of the special working group investigating marketing and business opportunities for the Graduate Union within the broader business community. As a member of this group, Rebecca has been instrumental in introducing the Graduate Union to the wider university community and to many other groups. She has produced a new advertising brochure and has also managed and arranged the many conference and function enquiries. Rebecca’s expertise and assistance have been invaluable and she will be greatly missed at Graduate House, not only for her knowledge but also for her cheerful personality, sense of humour and her commonsense.

A letter to Frank Lees from his father recounts the atmosphere in Melbourne on that day and which Professor Geoffrey Blainey considers the best description of the celebrations he has read.

HIGHLIGHTS AND SPECIAL EVENTS SINCE THE APRIL EDITION The Chancellor Visits A visit by the new Chancellor of The University of Melbourne, Mr Ian Renard, was a highlight in April. Without any fanfare, Mr Renard slipped across Grattan Street for a tour and a informal buffet lunch with the President and Secretary-Warden.

The Development Committee The final meeting was held on Thursday, 5 May followed by a special dinner marking the completion of the building project and to thank all concerned for their excellent work over the past two years. The Secretary-Warden arranged a delicious three-course dinner and Dr Robert Gibson, Chairman of the Committee supplied the wines to accompany each course.

Birthday Celebration Dr Phillip Law’s birthday dinner was a gala event at Graduate House. The evening began with pre-dinner drinks in the Lounge, where Dr Law signed copies of his book, and was followed by a delicious meal which finished with a luscious tiramisu birthday cake complete with flickering candles and the best wishes of the assembled guests. Dr Law’s opening remarks expressed the basic theme of his address. He said, "When one comes to look at what has been written about the history of Antarctic exploration, one is not very impressed". He went on to speak about some well known Antarctic explorers giving his views on their contribution to Antarctic discovery and exploration. It was a wonderful evening with guests remaining long after its conclusion and reluctant to depart.

Autumn Dinner A formal dinner followed the Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 26 May 2005. The new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glyn Davis, who kindly agreed to address members, spoke about the future direction of the University, the role of overseas students and compared present academic standards with those of earlier years. He spoke also about the difficulty of combining the University’s role as an educator with the realities of financial necessity.

LUNCHEON ADDRESSES - MAY • JUNE • JULY Jennifer Kloester was a breath of fresh air at the May luncheon with her bright personality and youthful exuberance for her subject matter. Her keen interest in historical fiction was very apparent, as was her extensive knowledge of the works of the best-selling historical novelist, Georgette Heyer. Jennifer was recently awarded a PhD at the University of Melbourne for her thesis on Heyer, her Regency novels and history in fiction. She is currently writing a book to be published in 2005 and in 2006 she hopes to publish a new biography of Georgette Heyer. The lunch was excellent, the address stimulating and the audience captivated. All in all a very successful monthly luncheon.

Mr A Jock Chudacek was the Construction Manager for the Alice Springs to Darwin line and is currently involved with the Victorian Fast Regional Rail Project. He spoke about the difficulty of building a modern railway in a very remote area and how this was achieved, including the complex method of laying the continuous, unbroken ribbons of steel rail to withstand the very cold nights and hot days. This has resulted in a railway which was economical to build and maintain, while giving a very smooth ride for passengers but more particularly for freight wagons. Freight is the main focus of the line which services the vast Port of Darwin allowing the Northern Territory to send its agricultural products, fruits and vegetables to other States. New mines have also been built now that an economical railway transport facility is available.

John McCredie opened his address by referring to his war service as a fighter pilot over England during the Second World War and continued with his service in India, following which he entered the diplomatic service. He spoke about his time in south-east Asia from the late 1940s and Australia’s role in and perception of unfolding events. His anecdotes of Bob Hawke’s visits drew some laughter as he recounted comments made by him in the language used by Mr Hawke. He explained in ‘layman’ terms and so the audience gained a clearer understanding of historical events which had happened in their lifetime. John spoke with great affection about his time at The University of Melbourne and the inspiring teachers he had been fortunate enough to have encountered there. It was clear from the audience reaction that many had been at the University during those years and still held them in great respect and affection.

UNIVERSITY GRADUATES CLUB ACTIVITIES April - Ferry Trip. A Sorrento to Queenscliff ferry trip and picnic was enjoyed by residents and members and a great success as the inaugural excursion to be organised by the University Graduates Club. The carefully planned itinerary lasted until Mornington with an unscheduled stop by the driver, our Secretary-Warden Eugene, for morning tea. This ‘detour’ set the carefree atmosphere for the rest of the day. The next stop was Sorrento for some local sightseeing followed by a ferry trip to Queenscliff where lunch was enjoyed on the foreshore.

A street market proved an unexpected bonus on the day with some being tempted by bargains while others explored the sights. A weary but contented group returned to Graduate House in unanimous agreement that it had been a wonderful day.

May - Bike Ride On a sunny Sunday in May a bike ride was organised by new Graduate Councillor, Darren Room who took a group of members and residents along the bike paths around the local area. Residents in particular were very interested to see some of Melbourne from a different perspective.

June - Tour of Art Exihition A group of members toured an exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Senior Curator, Mr Terence Lane, escorted members through the Colonial Collection where works by early 19th century artists are exhibited.

July - DeBortoli Winery Tour The DeBortoli winery tour, cellar door tasting and barbecue was particularly popular. The weather was extremely cold and lunch was moved from the outdoor barbecue area to one more enclosed at the Punt Road Winery nearby. A tour will be organised during summer as all were very impressed with this winery.

Classic Film Matinee The film matinee which concludes with Devonshire Tea has become a regular activity each month, showing such films as How Green was my Valley, Gone with the Wind, It’s a Wonderful Life and My Fair Lady. The day of showing varies each month depending on conference and function activities.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY

Residents, members and staff join in the fun

Santa Claus returned to Graduate House on 29 July for a night of frivolity and fun as residents and members alike joined in the festivities of the evening. The dining rooms were opened to their full capacity and decorated with tinsel, bonbons and candles. The karaoke machine proved a great success as residents took up the challenge to outdo each other, singing and dancing to the music.

The decision to have Christmas in July for residents was much appreciated as many long term residents have already left for the Christmas holidays when their Christmas party is held at the end of November each year.

BACK TO THE POTTER The University of Melbourne’s Ian Potter Museum of Art re-opens next week (6 August) with six new exhibitions to welcome visitors back and a program of other exhibitions and events through 2005–2006.

The Burn is an ideal base for visiting the famous Castles of Mar (Castles Fraser, Drum, Crathes and Balmoral on Royal Deeside–only a half hour drive by car on the Cairn O’Mounth road). Glamis Castle and Edzell Castle are also very
