THE CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE LUNCHES WITH COUNCILLORS AT GRADUATE HOUSE On 27 November 2002 the Chancellor, Mrs Fay Marles and her husband, Don, lunched in the Johnston Library at Graduate House. She spoke of plans for the University of Melbourne’s 150th celebrations, the Graduate Union’s place in the history of the University since 1911 and her vision for the future.

She took with her some ideas from Councillors on possibilities of Graduate Union’s further contributions to the 150th celebrations.

CHRISTMAS AT GRADUATE HOUSE Christmas at Graduate House was a lively affair from mid-November until 20 December. Members held many of their functions at the House, including luncheons and more formal evening dinners.

At the Members’ Christmas Party on 19 December, the quartet, Quattro set the Christmas mood during pre-dinner drinks. Bruce Campbell, a member of the group, led the carol singing after dinner by the more brave in the group.

RESIDENTS’ CHRISTMAS PARTY Councillors joined residents for a Christmas celebration on 29 November featuring a Karaoke machine. As the evening went on, even the more timid of the group, raised their voices to the beat. Residents partied well into the night and the Karaoke was deemed to be a great success.

John Gill, Chairman Development Committee I am pleased to report that our Town Planning application has been approved by the Melbourne City Council with only minor conditions which we can easily meet. This is a good result because in such a sensitive heritage area as University Square it is not unusual for Town Planning approval to be held up with objections and appeals to VCAT. The Development Committee is now very busy with our architects, Perrott Lyon Mathieson attending to the detailed interior design, which we plan to complete by Easter and then invite tenders by builders. In the meantime, construction of the tunnel from Bouverie Street through to the underground car park appears to be proceeding according to schedule for completion about the end of March.

Proposed Amendments to the Rules Graduate Council has agreed to recommend to members some minor changes to two aspects of the rules to be in step with modern conditions. Formal motions will be presented as part of the agenda for the Annual General Meeting.

The rules governing inspection of the register of members and other records allow restrictions as to time and place. The proposed amendments will recognise the effect of the new privacy laws and permit restrictions on the basis of privacy.

The potential use of electronic communications as well as the postal service has been included in the model rules for incorporated associations.

Amendments will be proposed to allow members the option of listing an electronic address on the register of members and to receive formal notices in this way. The model rule used as a guide permits a member to revoke this choice at any time.

Extract from letter to the President from Professor Geoffrey Blainey ...... I liked The History of the Graduate Union – you preside in distinguished company. I thought the Bill Berry era was handled appreciatively, all to all. I liked him, provocateur as he could be.

January 2003 Extract of a letter to Barbara Funder from Warren Perry, Life Member I was delighted to receive some days ago a copy of the above History. All concerned with its production have done a good job in the time available. The format of the book is good to look at. It does not “affright my gaze” as Shakespeare might have said. I was pleased to see that it also has a Chronology and the typefaces have been tastefully selected. There is a good range of illustrations which is always a good thing in a book of this kind.

May I suggest that if this History runs to a second edition that a Frontispiece be inserted of the first President of the Graduate Union, the Rt Hon Sir John Latham be shown and that an Index be inserted, even if it is just a Name Index.

‘The Spirit of the Graduate Union’ – Sponsorship and Employment Network Nishan Aubeeluck comes from Mauritius, is bilingual in English and French and has been a resident of Graduate House since February 2002. Following his previous professional work experience in international marketing and investment, and his recent Masters in International Business at the University of Melbourne, he is now urgently seeking sponsorship from any potential employer in Melbourne and is prepared to start his career as from entry-level, preferably in the areas of marketing, communication, sales, relationship management or finance in any industry.

Last year, Nishan had the opportunity to work on lending projects for the ANZ Bank as well as the Rio Tinto Kwinana project financing development in Western Australia as part of his Masters program. Despite the rigour of his Masters degree, Nishan has been able to take part in many extra-curricular activities including sports, clubs, university student unions and voluntary work.

He is proud of the friendships he has made in Melbourne with classmates, instructors and the wider community, including members of the Graduate Union, whom he considers his life-long friends.
