CHRISTMAS AT GRADUATE HOUSE The festive spirit took over at Graduate House from early November, with members’ lunches and dinners almost every day. The Councillors’ and Residents’ Christmas Party was a lively affair with a Karaoke machine being delivered early on Thursday, 27 November and residents practising their ‘art’ throughout the day. An ‘Italian Santa’ visited the party during the evening, handing out prizes to all participants and compliments to the ladies.

PROGRESS OF ‘THE NEW GRADUATE HOUSE’ AS AT 20 JANUARY 2004 Work commenced on the building site following the Christmas holiday period. The photograph shows construction at the rear of the building which will house essential services. The concrete slab is expected to be laid by the end of February and completed by the end of March.

A more reserved Santa again visited The Graduate Union Members’ Christmas Party on the evening of Friday, 12 December, dispensing his perennial good cheer and gifts generously donated by suppliers to Graduate House.

Once again, new member Dr Bruce Campbell entertained guests with his violin, playing carols and other festive songs accompanied by Giovanni on the piano accordion. A very enjoyable evening was had by all who attended.

Good progress is being made with the refurbishment of rooms and public areas in the annexe. Alterations include the conversion of one of the two kitchens into a lounge room and the provision of a laundry facility for the three terraces.

Residents in the annexe will appreciate the convenience of these changes. Internal painting is almost completed and has brought new life to the buildings. The annexe facades were refurbished last year with the main building facades.

Following the December monthly-mail out, volunteers joined the Secretary-Warden and staff for a traditional Christmas lunch of turkey, ham and Christmas pudding. Without the volunteers the monthly mail-out would not be possible and our sincere thanks go to them all for their continuing dedication to the Graduate Union.

The Christmas Dinner for nine of us in the Library was just perfect. We felt as if we were being entertained in a private home – and no dishes to do afterwards!

We truly can claim to be ‘golden oldies’ clocking up 66 years of friendship since our first days at school!

Congratulations to John on the meal itself and to Graduate House for the ambience.

November 2003 To Chairman, Dr David Bellair, from Emeritus Professor Roy Webb, Life Member I was delighted to receive your letter about my award in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

To the Editors, Extract of letter from Frances Scott of Western Australia I would like to congratulate Mr de la Lande on his excellent obituary on Mr Stan Dean in the November issue of The Melbourne Graduate. A Melbourne friend has just sent it to me. My late husband was deeply involved in Graduate House in its early days. My husband was not a leader, but rather an admirer, supporter and co-worker.

He helped with the practical side of things.

Naturally his involvement brought us into contact with Stan Dean. My husband rightly said that Stan was the finest gentleman he had ever met. When my first husband died, Stan Dean, knowing that we had no extended family in Melbourne, was one of the first over the threshold to ask in what ways he could be of help… I was privileged to be on a visit to Melbourne at the beginning of October, attend the luncheon at the Graduate Union as a guest of an old friend, witness the turning of the first sod and then be present at Stan’s funeral service.

There I heard a narration of an amazing life of dedication and service to humanity both before and after his retirement. One can truly say that Stan Dean left the world a far better place than he entered it…

Kate Hammond, Legal Ombudsman, Victoria was introduced by Dr David Bellair, Chairman of Council. The term ‘ombudsman’ is of Scandinavian origin and means ‘receiver of complaints’.

Ben Bodna recounted some of the famous pilgrimages he has undertaken : in England, from Winchester to Canterbury, to Walsingham and Iona; in Wales, to St David’s; in Ireland, to Croagh Patrick and Knock; in Israel, to Jerusalem’s Wailing Wall and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, to the Church of the Annunciation in Bethlehem and to the Cave of Machpelah in Hebron; in France, to Lourdes and St Bernadette; in Portugal, to Fatima, where people moved towards the church on their knees; in Italy, to Assissi and the Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome; in Poland, to Auschwitz and in Germany, to Dachau.

She has a background in consumer protection, but employs seven lawyers with private practice experience, who carry out investigations and make recommendations to her. The Legal Ombudsman is a statutory appointment and differs from the Banking, the Telecommunications and the Energy ombudsmen, for example, who are ‘owned’ by those industries.

Members were amused to learn that Victoria is the ‘complaints capital’ of Australia and that several national ombudsmen are located in the one building in Melbourne. Most complaints against lawyers arise in Family Law, then in Criminal Law, though many are lodged concerning Conveyancing, Wills and Estates.

Delays in carrying out services and poor communication with clients are the main areas of complaint. Some lawyers take on work beyond their experience, which can become the cause of complaint. Kate Hammond felt that there are too many law graduates, giving rise to fierce competition in the suburbs.

The purpose of the Legal Ombudsman’s office is to protect the public, as consumers of legal services. The Annual Report of the Legal Ombudsman contains details of the complaints handled by that office.

His travels on the pilgrim route from Le Puy to Compostela were illustrated with entertaining examples of interactions with other pilgrims and travel companions making the journey from France to Spain. To gain a certificate of completion of the pilgrimage, the traveller needs to have a ‘passport’ stamped at church points along the way to prove that the route has been properly followed.

The Latin certificate for this pilgrimage was displayed at the luncheon.

People walk the pilgrim routes for a variety of reasons : homage, communion, curiosity, sightseeing, adventure, penance and in exile. The journey can awaken a sense of awe of the beauty and might of nature, reflection on the achievements of humankind, and a desire to search for ways to live with greater humility, simplicity, humour and respect for one another.

Kate Hammond answered questions from the members and was thanked by Eva Nagy.

FROM THE ARCHIVES Graduate House v. International House Soccer Match [The Melbourne Graduate, Vol. 18 No. 8 (October, 1967), p.40] A social soccer match was played on Sunday, 10th September, on Princes Park between a scratch team of Graduate House residents and an International House team, which had already beaten Monash University. The Graduate House team won 1-0, the only goal being scored by Peter Lam (China) after ten minutes in the first half.

Best for Graduate House were Graham Mitchell, a former inter-varsity Australian Rules player, who relished the position of goalie, and Amilton Ferreira, a new resident from Brazil. Other team members who had not previously played soccer found themselves frequently penalised for using Australian Rules tactics.
