THE Music Gallery The EMC launches with a new type of concert experience: intimate presentations of music by the EUYO throughout the magnificent rooms of Grafenegg Castle, with the audience free to wander from room to room. In each room a particular piece of music will be performed at set times. Listeners will be free to either follow pre-arranged music «trails», or to create their own programme by choosing which rooms to visit and in which order. Some may even go further, abandoning any fixed trail, instead simply walking from room to room as the mood takes them. Here is a chance to abandon that fixed chair in the concert hall, walking through the music as if through an art gallery.
Open rehearsals What really happens when musicians prepare for that all-important concert? We can help you answer that question as we guide you in listening to the EUYO rehearse. You get a rehearsal guest pass, and a free guide who will introduce you to the rehearsal process, explaining what is really going on. Rehearsal guests can meet players during rehearsal breaks and reassemble to talk about what they have seen and heard in the open rehearsals. Your chance to see what a symphony «office» looks like at work. Who knows what you might learn about your own office?
EMC Music LaB The EMC Music Lab will experiment with ways to develop how orchestras rehearse, and how players like the EUYO’s young talented musicians can deepen their performances and develop their careers. During the 2014 EMC there will be three EMC Music Lab evenings. During these evenings the orchestra will arrive with their instruments but may spend most, or perhaps even all of the time in discussion. The first EMC Music Lab session will be Looking East, exploring Shostakovich’s turbulent life and social context. Further EMC Music Lab sessions will focus on Berio’s Sinfonia, and also on what kind of career, musicians like the EUYO’s young players should be looking forward to. And at the EMC, audiences get the chance to witness this process for free.
Concerts At the heart of the EMC stand two evening concerts with world-class conductors and soloists. Acclaimed Russian Maestro Vasily Petrenko introduces the Looking East theme with a performance of Shostakovich’s epic fourth symphony, the story of which draws audiences into thirty years of world events in the mid twentieth century, and a story which Bychkov knows from a personal as well as from a musical angle. In the second concert Maestro Petrenko looks west to USA composers Bernstein, Gershwin and John Adams, alongside Grafenegg composer in residence Jörg Widmann. Soloists ž Vilde Frang and Simon Trpceski complete the line-up for the EUYO’s evening concerts. Before each
evening concert a prelude introduces music related to the evening concert. And after each evening concert, come and join the EUYO’s players, conductor and soloists with invited guests for an informal Late Night Session | After Show.
