ASCEND: A Campaign to Inspire Excellence Graland Country Day School
LETTER FROM CHRISTOPHER W. HUNT Dear Graland Community, In line with our mission, Graland has always focused on providing the best academic program and learning environment for our students. When Head of School Ronni McCaffrey began challenging us to “look over the horizon” at what Graland students would need to prepare them for future success, we agreed that three areas were necessary to accomplish our goal. The plan was to adapt our facilities to meet programmatic needs while keeping people at the forefront of our aspirations through professional development and financial aid funding. The opportunity was to develop a unique, comprehensive campaign that combined three fundraising efforts: capital, endowment and annual fund. Step by step, we tackled this challenge like Graland students would: try, improve,
try again. Thanks to a strong partnership between the Board of Trustees, Ronni and the Graland administrative team, we set a goal to raise $24 million within two years, build an incredible new building within one year and award more financial assistance and professional development funds than ever before. On May 12, 2015, with full confidence that the Graland community would rally behind this effort, we presented ASCEND: A Campaign to Inspire Excellence. We were not disappointed. I remember the day very clearly. As we gathered together at an event called “Climbing Mountains,” there was a buzz in the air. I stood at the podium to announce ASCEND and our intent to move mountains. While our community watched the ASCEND launch video for the first time, I saw smiles, heard laughter and even noticed a few tears. We were all touched by the vision and the
impact it would have immediately on today’s students and also the lasting legacy it would leave for children of the future. We were on our way to achieving great things together. There is no greater example of the current strength and future potential of Graland. It was my privilege to help bring ASCEND to life and I am honored to have served a role in shaping the future of Graland.
Christopher W. Hunt Past President, Board of Trustees (2012-15)
LETTER FROM JOHN GOWEN ASCEND, as Chris has described, was an ambitious and multi-faceted campaign. We were able to exceed our $24 million goal due to the generosity of the broader Graland community. While we can certainly be proud of the dollars raised, to me the more impressive number is that we had over 1,000 donors participate. To help put that number in context, our previous capital campaigns had donor pools of 200-300. Our current families total approximately 500, so we were able to reach out beyond traditional sources and engage past parents, grandparents, faculty and alumni. It was truly a team effort and for this we thank each of you. Another highlight was announcing the
ASCEND results during Ronni’s retirement party on May 20, 2017. I feel blessed that our collective efforts were celebrated at the same time as Ronni’s four decades in education -- what a great present to give Ronni and the community. Now we take the success of ASCEND and put it to work. We have the resources necessary to focus on increased innovation in the classroom, strengthening our faculty recruitment, retention and development and expanding our financial aid program. These efforts will lead to stronger student outcomes and a stronger Graland. An unsung hero at Graland is our endowment. Started in the early 1990s by several visionaries, today these assets
help fund a broad array of Graland programs including financial aid, faculty compensation, professional development, the McCaffrey Early Childhood Learning Center and general operations. During ASCEND we raised approximately $9 million to further grow the assets. Graland’s endowment is a gift that keeps on giving, the investments grow in value over time which in turn leads to higher annual distributions back to Graland. We are excited to see how ASCEND will continue to impact our community in the near and distant future. Thank you, once again, for generously supporting Graland in so many ways.
John Gowen President, Board of Trustees

FACULTY
CELEBRATE!
The ASCEND campaign revolved around four unique goals, each a key component of our program. With funding complete, Graland students are already seeing the benefits of a robust and challenging school environment made possible by ASCEND donors.
THE FACULTY: THE BEST TEACHERS CAN CHANGE LIVES. Empowering Graland faculty to be active leaders is one thing, equipping them to motivate students is another. Through the professional development endowment, we are supplying educators with the tools, techniques and time to become the best teachers they can be and ensuring a permanent source of funding for this crucial initiative. Some other ways we are already using this endowment is by staffing a new position, the Charles C. Gates Director of Innovative Learning, and awarding the Borgen Family Fellowship, a new endowment that allows teachers to advance their formal education. The subsidized onsite childcare in the McCaffrey Early Childhood Learning Center is another way Graland is committed to teachers. With their children on campus and accessible, teachers can focus more fully on meeting the needs of their students. It’s a win-win for everyone.
THE COMMUNITY: A STRONG COMMUNITY FUELS A STRONG SCHOOL. As we continue to reflect society’s demographics, our diversity definition includes differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economics, culture and family structure. Case in point: 83 percent of new families in 2017-18 include dual-working households. Furthermore, our robust tuition assistance endowment is designed to attract a more diverse student population to our campus. We award financial assistance to one in five Graland students, demonstrating our commitment to an inclusive learning community that prepares students with the character traits and compassion to succeed in a globallyconnected society.
THE LEARNING SPACE: DYNAMIC FACILITIES INSPIRE EXCITEMENT AND A PASSION FOR LEARNING. Our newest building on campus, the Corkins Center, is a fantastic space for innovation, technology and science. It also serves as the new main entrance to Graland where the Martin Family Hall is used for lounging, meeting and socializing. The expanded Gates Innovation Lab is utilized by all grade levels, and in the Lower School science classrooms, teachers have access to state-of-the-art tools to inspire learning about the natural world. The Hunt Family Learning Commons is in the center of it all, a place where traditional books work alongside the Borgen Family Makerspace, Digital Media Studio and Hamilton Family Foundation multi-use classrooms to challenge young minds. The Corkins Center is certainly impressive, but we didn’t stop there. Other areas of campus saw critical renovations, including Middle School science, Lower School Spanish, and a gross motor room in the McCaffrey Early Childhood Learning Center. Our student support program expanded with the Freyer Family Student Support Center in the Middle School and its counterpart, the Jurek Family Lower School Student Services Suite. Performing arts spaces were upgraded to enhance choir, band and the recording studio, while plans are in place to design a new outdoor play space.
THE ANNUAL FUND: ONGOING SUPPORT FUNDS CRITICAL PROGRAMS. With thanks to generous donors who participated in the annual fund, we were able to continue funding programs and services that are unique to Graland. In addition to the support from current parents, we are grateful to other donors including 100 percent of trustees, grandparents, alumni, 100 percent of faculty/staff, and friends of Graland.

RONNI MCCAFFREY HONORED FOR COMMITMENT TO FACULTY AND STAFF In a gesture of recognition for all Ronni McCaffrey has accomplished at Graland and in particular her generous support of faculty and staff, the preschool program has been renamed The McCaffrey Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC). The ECLC opened in 2011 to serve children ages 1 to 4, and it is widely known that Ronni held a special place in her heart for Graland’s youngest students. She is not only credited with developing the program, but is also considered its generous benefactress. Ronni’s touch is all over the facility, including the children’s literature she donated from her personal collection and the fantastic preschool playground she funded with her wife, b. Frank. The addition of an onsite childcare transformed campus for many teachers, turning work into a family affair. Teacher Julie O’Connor said, “We are so thankful to Ronni for her love and care of our children. When we see the babies on campus in the six-person stroller Ronni purchased, or watch the children play in the ECLC water feature, we are reminded of how blessed we are. Their happiness and well-being were her priority and we are truly grateful.”
School nurse Megan Schmid added, “Because of Ronni, making the decision to go back to work has been an easier one. Knowing that my kids are close by and that I can see them during the day is such a blessing. My family will always be grateful that Ronni advocated to have the employee daycare on campus.” Program director Johnnie Romano put it this way: “It’s Graland’s worst-kept secret that Ronni will sometimes ‘escape’ the Head of School’s office and ‘hide’ in the Early Childhood Learning Center. When she sits down, surrounded by children, and reads picture books to them, it’s not hard to imagine her as a young teacher 40 years ago when her love for education first began. I would like to thank Ronni from the bottom of my heart for her brilliance, unwavering support, compassion and her inspiration for excellence! She has truly been a role model for us all.”
