LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear Graland Community,
The launch of the new strategic plan gave us new focus going into the 2022-23 school year. Specifically, after COVID had taken its toll on our faculty and staff for over two years, we prioritized the goal and objectives under Empower Educators and looked to build relationships and morale through the Professional Growth Partner (PGP) Program and other methods.
I felt confident that we could allocate the appropriate time and resources to address this critical strategic priority because of the strong financial position of the school. Once again, our community didn’t disappoint and bolstered my confidence throughout the year by showing unprecedented generosity. This support allowed us to successfully implement the PGP program, leading to low educator attrition rates and record numbers of faculty taking advantage of our sphere compensation system. In addition, the contributions of the Graland community the the Annual Fund provided a sense of stability during a year impacted by rising interest rates, stubborn inflation, and general financial unpredictability.
The following gratitude report details the impressive community engagement that will propel us to achieve our strategic goals to inspire students, empower educators, engage families and cultivate a culture of belonging. I specifically want to acknowledge the extraordinary annual fund effort of Development Committee Chair Kate Gulick, Director of Development Jessica Goski, the Development Department, and the entire team of Development Committee members and Annual Fund Grade Representatives, who once again exceeded their dollar goal by a significant margin and maintained a strong showing of parent participation.
This year, as we shift our focus to other elements of the strategic plan, I am excited to see how this community’s energy and engagement maintain our momentum as we spin the wheel to thrive and achieve our mission to foster intellectual excellence and strong character.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT
Dear Graland Community,
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to express my thanks to everyone—students, families, and educators—for all that you do, every day, to make Graland the thriving institution that it is.
Reflecting on the 2022-23 school year, it was wonderful to talk to a lot of parents about their Graland journey and experience. Yes, there are certainly opportunities for improvement, as there will always be. Nearly all conversations are passionate, heart-warming, and inspiring. The best comment, which I heard frequently, was, “My child absolutely blossomed this year.” That’s what it means to thrive and that’s what we’re here for.
The pinwheel depiction of our strategic plan is brilliant in how it symbolizes the importance of connection among our three primary constituencies: students, families, and educators. The depth and strength of that connection creates our culture of belonging.
With deep gratitude and excitement about how we will continue to thrive together,
2022-23 Board of Trustees

Volunteer Spotlight: Amanda Witheiler
After moving to Colorado from New York, Graland parents Amanda and Matthew Witheiler got right to work finding a school that would be a great fit for their daughter, Madeline, and their family. Amanda grew up in Colorado and had heard about Graland’s positive reputation from friends and knew she didn’t want to miss the opportunity to tour the school. In fact, before the Witheilers even made the move from the East Coast, Madeline attended summer camp at Graland, and the rest was history!
Today, Madeline is a first grader at Graland, and both Amanda and Matthew love spending time volunteering at the school. “We’re so grateful for the incredible education our daughter is getting at Graland, so volunteering is a way for us to give back to the school,” Amanda said. “It’s also important for our daughter to see us helping on campus as it instills in her a desire to lean in and get more involved in the community too. I enjoy volunteering because I get to meet new people and spend time with other parents in the community who are all so dynamic.”
Those who know Amanda know that no task is too large or small, especially when it comes to working with the Graland Parent Association (GPA). In her first year at the school, she spent time volunteering at the library and at the school store, at various educator appreciation events, class parties, and Grandparents and Special Friends Day, as well as at the 2022 Graland Gallop. This year, Amanda is the co-chair of the Graland Gallop and GPA communications chair-elect, in addition to her other various roles. Amanda’s husband Matthew has also stayed busy by helping in the lunchroom, at the art show, at educator appreciation breakfasts, and with the Annual Fund committee.
When asked how her time volunteering at Graland has inspired her, Amanda said, “Volunteering at Graland has been inspirational because it’s given me an opportunity to see just how much goes into making our community the incredible one that it is. Many people devote hours of their time to help with activities and experiences for our kids in addition to the countless hours all educators and staff already spend. It’s amazing to see, and my family and I are very grateful for it. It makes us want to get involved even more.”
In addition to the time she spends at Graland, Amanda also makes it a point to help out weekly at the St. Francis Center in Denver. As a lawyer and former owner of a criminal defense practice in New York, the organization and its important
work directly align with her professional passions and values. She especially loves running into Graland students who also volunteer at the shelter through the school’s service learning program and is looking forward to her daughter having similar opportunities. “We chose Graland for our daughter in large part because of its engaged community. Having the opportunity to get involved as a family was hugely important to us in the school search as we believe the stronger the sense of the community, the more well-rounded education our daughter will receive,” Amanda said.
When it comes to being a new family at Graland, Amanda’s advice is not to waste any time getting involved because it will only improve your experience. “There are so many ways to get involved in the community, so do what you can with the time you have. It will only enrich you and your family’s experience, as well as strengthen the incredible sense of community Graland has.”

2022-23 LOYALTY GIVING
The Graland Loyalty Society was established to recognize donors who give to Graland for five or more consecutive years. Society members receive special recognition in our annual Gratitude Report. Membership is based on household giving each fiscal year (July 1 - June 30) and gifts of any amount count toward Graland Loyalty Society membership.
Graland is incredibly grateful for its most loyal donors who choose to give year after year. These donors are recognized for their long-standing commitment to the school.

After meeting at the University of Pennsylvania and living in New York for 17 years, Graland parents Chris and Erin Smith said it was only a matter of time before they relocated their family back to Erin’s home state. With two young children (Owen, Grade 5, and Clark, Pre-K), the Smiths were ready for a house with a yard, the active lifestyle that Colorado brings, and to be closer to family and friends. What they didn’t know was that the pandemic was just around the corner, and a strong community would become more important than ever.
When asked what they love most about being part of the Graland community, Erin said, “The Graland community has welcomed us with open arms since we first joined in the fall of 2020. As you might imagine, it was a difficult time to be starting at a new school, especially since our son was entering second grade, which is not a typical entry year. But the school itself and other Graland families reached out and connected with us in so many ways that we immediately felt at home.”
Ever since, the Smiths have found countless ways to support Graland through their “time, talent, and treasure.” In addition to her work as a human rights attorney and a Court-Appointed Special Advocate
The Smith Family: Finding a Home Away from Home
for children (CASA), Erin has been a room parent, a member of the Parent Admissions Network (PAN), a grade representative for the Annual Fund, and a member of the development committee. This year, she is looking forward to being the carline organizer for the Graland Parent Association (GPA). In addition, Chris, who runs an investment firm, enjoys serving on the finance committee and coaching his son’s football team, made up almost entirely of Graland kids.
belongs. We feel it is important to support any community that we are choosing to be a part of. Giving to and volunteering at Graland helps create a good environment for our children and also models for them the importance of service,” Erin said.
During her time on the Annual Fund Committee, Erin learned important aspects about the Annual Fund that she wishes other families knew. “Through my work with the Development Team, I have learned that tuition does not cover the entire cost of educating our children,” Erin said. “The Annual Fund provides important support that goes directly toward operating expenses in the current academic year, meaning those dollars get put to work right away supporting our children’s learning experiences and providing flexibility for the school to respond to shifting needs.”
Even with their busy schedules, Erin shared that their family’s commitment to Graland is not only top-priority for her and Chris but important for her kids to see. “As our children’s school, Graland is one of the most important communities to which our family
In addition, Erin’s time as an Annual Fund Grade Representative provided an opportunity to work towards a cause aligned with her professional passions: making schools more accessible for children. “Chris and I care deeply about making a Graland education accessible to any family that feels it is the right place for them. I have seen in my own work that accessibility is not only about opening the doors and

So many people pitch in every day to make Graland the special place that it is. We are grateful to do our part to continue supporting this incredible school and the people who make it what it is.”
allowing people to walk through them. Instead, it requires actively reaching out and supporting underrepresented groups to learn about and access important resources that may feel unavailable to them. The Annual Fund supports this work through financial aid and also by supporting the school’s talented and caring staff. For example, I have learned that the Admission Team assists families who have language or technology barriers to complete their Graland application, improving equitable access to the school.”
In fact, the school’s caring environment is often a conversation that comes up around the Smith family dinner table during a game of “rose, bud, thorn.” Each night, Chris and Erin’s kids, Owen and Clark, enjoy sharing a good part of their day, a bad part, and something they are looking forward to. It is almost guaranteed that during these moments, Owen and Clark recount a positive anecdote about one of their classmates. “It’s impossible to think about what makes Graland such a special place without thinking about the students,” Chris said. “I could give so many examples, but we are often talking in our home about how caring the Graland students are and how fortunate we feel that our boys get to grow up and learn from such genuinely kind and inclusive children.”
When asked what they are looking forward to in the years to come, Chris and Erin shared that they are excited to watch their kids participate in all of the events that bring Graland together (the Charles C. Gates Program Invention and Innovation Expo, the Kindergarten Rodeo, etc.). In addition, they are excited to remain involved in the school community that they love. “We have learned that a community is made strong by its members,” Erin said. “So many people pitch in every day to make Graland the special place that it is. We are grateful to do our part to continue supporting this incredible school and the people who make it what it is.”

The Right Family: Cherishing Memories and Creating New Ones
Richard and Michele Right joined the Graland community in the fall of 1978 with their eldest child Andrew '90. “Andrew’s godmother had children at Graland when he was born,” Michele said. “She told me she thought the education her children were receiving was excellent, and she suggested that we take a look at it when he was ready for school. We did. We loved the school and applied and Andrew was accepted.” Andrew '90 was later joined by his younger brother and sister, Jonathan '93 and Elizabeth '97.
Third generation Colorado natives, Richard and Michele have lived and worked in the Denver area all their lives. Richard obtained his law degree at University of Denver, and Michele also received her BA from the Communications School at University of Denver. Once the Right Family joined Graland, both jumped in with volunteer involvement. For Richard, that included serving as Annual Giving
Chair and on the Development Committee. For Michele, that ranged from serving on the Long-Range Planning Committee, Education Committee and Parent Education Committee of the Board, as well as leadership roles with what Graland then called the Parent Council, including Room Parent, Volunteer Co-Chair, Carnival Co-Chair, Middle School Representative, Parent Council Secretary and even as President in the 1991-92 school year. With Andrew, Jonathan and Elizabeth all having attended Graland from PreK through ninth grade, Michele and Richard are proud of their 22-year distinction as Graland parents.
“We grew up along with our children at Graland. We share so many fond memories of and with them and with so many of their friends and their parents!” Michele and Richard shared. The couple continues to attend Graland events today, celebrating when their children’s friends have received alumni awards from the school and assisting with
babysitting duties of their grandchildren to allow their own children to attend special events, including Jonathan’s recent 30th Reunion.
Andrew, Jonathan, and Elizabeth all live in New York City. Andrew has been in finance and infrastructure private equity since 2002. After working at Goldman Sachs, the U.S. Department of Transportation and Related Fund Management, he started his own private equity firm, US InfraVest Managers, in 2020. With the exception of a four year stint earning a JD/MBA, Jonathan has spent his career at Goldman Sachs, where he is a managing director investing in the secondary private equity market. Elizabeth is a sport and exercise psychologist who works with middle and high school athletes on the mental side of sports. Prior to this, she taught health and wellness and physical education in various K-12 private schools.
All the Rights have children of their own and Elizabeth’s and Jonathan's even have monthly Greek mythology enrichment sessions with long-time former Graland faculty member, Phil Hickey, who now resides in New Jersey. “There is a group of Graland alumni who get together in New York with one of our beloved teachers, Mr. Hickey, and it’s a great way for our own kids to experience a bit of our education and childhood,” shared Elizabeth. “Whether they liked it or not, every Graland alumnus/a remembers Greek mythology with Mr. Hickey. Now when we get together, we say it’s for our kids, but I think it’s also for us, the alumni.”
Fond memories of Graland are numerous and a consistent throughline for the three Rights. Andrew reflects on the experiential and interdisciplinary learning units, such as Knighting and the Roman Museum, and school trips, as well as deeply impactful relationships with Graland teachers. He also shared, “It is a pleasure to support Graland as I firmly believe that I owe much of what I have achieved so far (and hopefully more in the future!) to Graland and my teachers while I was a student there.”
Jonathan cites similar memories of learning, trips and teachers, and also added the significance of long lasting friendships that stem from his youngest days. “We really had a special class. We all have busy lives as - oil men, surgeons, famous television political and economic pundits, puzzle makers, investors, a CFO of a public company - but we had a huge showing for our 30th year reunion this year. It’s telling that so many of us still found our way back after so much time, and it’s because Graland had such a huge impact on our lives.”
The Rights also shared about the life lessons that Graland instilled in them. Andrew shared, “Graland did so much for me by teaching me how to work hard, learn, and be a productive and positive member of my community. It also taught me an innate intellectual curiosity. I want to help ensure that the institution can do the same for others.” Elizabeth added, “Graland taught you how to succeed but also how to fail. Everything was applied to the ‘real world’ so all different types of learners could grasp the concepts. I think it also says something about the teachers. Adolescence is hard and the teachers were always available. They wanted you to succeed in finding the joy in learning.”
In January 2023, Elizabeth hosted a Graland gathering in her New York City apartment, with attendees including fellow alumni, parents of alumni, current grandparents and yes, even Mr. Hickey himself. Guests heard from Head of School Josh Cobb about current events at Graland and then had a chance to share with one another their personal experiences and memories. “I love hosting alumni events in New York,” said Elizabeth. “I wish I was able to come back to Denver more often, however for now, my brothers and I are so happy to open our doors to alumni and the broader Graland community. It’s just as Graland has open doors for us.”
She continued, “I think when you live in Denver, you take for granted how special it is. However for me, it’s always such a treat to return to campus or to gather with Graland alumni elsewhere. Ten years is a long time with someone - you rarely forget the Graland family. And it’s so fun to see how things change but also stay the same. Graland treasures the history of the past and honors it, as it grows into the future.”

During Innovation Night, Graland families are invited to the Charles C. Gates Invention & Innovation Lab to experience Tinker Time and the values it provides to their children.
Rather than just learning about Colorado mountain ecosystems, life zones, and wilderness in the classroom, sixth graders head to Keystone for an annual overnight trip to investigate for themselves.

At Graland, we create a sense of belonging by knowing and inspiring each student. A broadly diverse community fosters empathy, enriches teaching and learning, and promotes intellectual excellence and strong character.
New Art Piece Installed to Commemorate the Inspire Campaign
During the 2018-19 school year, the Inspire Campaign was launched and led by co-chairs Amy and Peter Corrigan and Andi and John Freyer ’92, to fund a groundbreaking sphere-based faculty compensation model. Rather than rewarding teachers simply for their years of experience and educational achievements, the innovative structure rewards teachers for impacting students in the classroom while going further to recognize those who demonstrate the school's values and advance the overall program. It raises Graland faculty salaries to be competitive, both locally and nationally, and rewards teachers for being masters of their craft. It honors exceptional teaching and is designed to impact program
growth and expand student learning. And it provides Graland with the means to attract outstanding teachers by showing recruits that the school values educational expertise and encourages a growth mindset. To commemorate the Inspire Campaign's positive impacts, show appreciation for its donors, and honor Graland educators, a new art piece was installed on campus in spring 2023. The piece, created by Tony Ball from Tork Collaborative Arts, resembles birch trees, paying homage to the school's original address (30 Birch Street) and the growth, knowledge, learning, and reaching for great heights that trees symbolize, all attributes Graland seeks for both its educators and its students.

Mancourt “Corky” Downing ’37 and Sybil Smith ’43 Downing Elementary Education Is the Foundation of Everything
In the spring of 2022, Wynn Downing Gandera called Graland to share news that her parents had left a gift for Graland in their estate. Decades before, Mancourt “Corky” Downing '37 and Sybil Smith '43 Downing had established an educational trust designated for college tuition for their grandchildren. When they designed the trust, they also included the stipulation that when the youngest grandchild turned 26 years of age, the trust was to be dissolved, and the remaining funds to be dispersed to educational institutions that meant the most to Corky and Sybil during their lives.
Graland Country Day School meant a great deal to both Corky and Sybil. Wynn shared “They were very strong on elementary education because they saw it as the foundation of everything.” She shared that her father stated that “elementary education is ‘the key’ and deserves great funding.” Their gift was designated for student scholarship.
Corky Downing enlisted in the U.S. Navy upon turning 18 in 1943 while attending East Denver High School. Upon his return to Colorado at the end of the war, he enrolled in Colorado College. Now back home, Corky consulted his father’s friends for advice on what to do next. Education was the prevailing answer and it played a significant role in the course of the couple’s lives.
Corky and Sybil moved to Chicago, where Corky eventually received his Ph.D in Biochemistry from the University of Chicago. They later moved back to Colorado and settled in Boulder with two daughters in 1955 where Sybil became involved with and eventually became president of the Boulder League of Women Voters. While raising four children, she
became active in local school affairs and was elected to the Boulder Valley RE-2 School Board in 1967 and served as its president until 1974. During her tenure on the school board, she took classes at University of Colorado’s mini college and completed her bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado in geography, participated in Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1976. In 1984, Sybil was elected as candidate at-large to the State Board of Education where she presided as chair until 1995. Meanwhile, Corky served as a professor of biochemistry at the University of Colorado for 25 years.
These esteemed educational leaders never forgot the impact of Graland on the trajectory of their later lives. And so, in turn, they left a gift to Graland in their estate for student scholarship, so that current and future students may have access to the school and its opportunities as well. Corky and Sybil’s daughter, Wynn, shared: “Their elementary foundation allowed my parents to excel later in life with further schooling, including my father’s Ph.D.” Graland is so grateful for the family’s gift and for the doors that their scholarship funding may open for other young Graland scholars.
Graland is sincerely grateful to Corky Downing '37 and Sybil Smith '43 Downing, and all the Montem Society members who have included Graland in their estate plans. For more information about how you can create a legacy at Graland through planned giving, contact Jessica Goski at 303-336-3705 or jgoski@graland.org.
