LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Graland Community, As I reflect on last year, I return to the themes of Inspiration, Innovation and Inclusivity. We began the year continuing to focus on our teachers and how they inspire us. Specifically, we honored those initial teachers who completed a thorough sphere transition process by demonstrating their impressive growth as educators and ultimately reaching the next sphere. Little did we know that by the end of the year, we were going to be even more reliant on all our teachers as they adjusted to Virtual Graland and demonstrated key elements of the sphere system—innovation, collaboration, and leadership—all while keeping children at the forefront of their efforts. Even if many found the online, Zoom-dominated medium challenging, they continued to extend to their students, honoring their individuality and facilitating their continual growth. By the end of the year, my admiration for our inspiring teachers grew even deeper. Thank you to all of you who showed your appreciation of teachers through the Inspire Campaign and other displays of gratitude. As I was impressed by faculty innovation, I was also affirmed by our school’s long-term dedication to innovation. Specifically, I am so grateful to the Gates Family, as we celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the Gates Innovation and Invention Program. That program’s conviction that children can solve any problem with fresh ideas and perseverance is essential for the Gates Program but is also essential to all of Graland. As we have seen over the past six months, the world needs complex problem-solvers more than ever, as there are current health and humanitarian crises that require it. Graland has a tradition of graduating those types of problem-solvers. We had a chance to meet with two of them in the spring, Dr. Anne Braun ‘93 Zink and Beth Linus ‘97, Ph.D., at an alumni event focusing on how best to address the COVID-19 crisis. Thank you to the Gates Family—specifically Diane Gates ‘69 Wallach—for keeping us accountable to our guiding principle, Stimulate Innovation, and to fostering innovation skills—empathy, critical and creative thinking, grit, experimentation, and collaboration—in our students. Inclusivity depends on a belief in the interdependence of our effort to foster social-emotional and intellectual growth in our students. All members of our community need to feel welcomed and supported for us all to thrive. I have always held this to be true and that belief was reaffirmed during last spring when we were all ambushed by the sudden impact of the coronavirus. Shaken by the shock of it all, we had to come together for the benefit of our shared purpose—the children and their growth. I commend all of you who continued to give your time, talent, and treasure to the school in this moment of crisis. In particular, I would like to extend my thanks to Bernie Dvorak, President of the Board, and the Board of Trustees for rising to the occasion, volunteering hours and hours beyond their expected commitment, and providing me and the leadership of the school with consistent guidance and encouragement. I wish I could review all of the examples of solidarity and support throughout this letter or even through this report, but there are too many to capture here. Still I want to stress two meaningful symbols of that generosity. First, I am awed by the annual fund effort led by Development Committee Chair Tim Buese and Director of Development Jessica Goski, who exceeded their goal at an unprecedented pace. Having those resources in hand when COVID-19 hit was so essential to our ability to meet the various challenges presented during Virtual Graland and to keep our community intact through it all. Secondly, after all the disruption caused by COVID, I was so thankful that over a third of our families returned their spring disbursement back to the school, providing us with much needed funds to help mitigate health risks and support learning, whether on or off campus. We will continue to rely on this community support as we enter this school year, a year in which we will need to call on all of our resources to continue to climb this mountain with adaptability, grace, and courage. Thank you all for embracing those traits through your committed engagement and bolstering us along this unpredictable journey. Ascende Omnem Montem Sincerely,

Josh Cobb Head of School 5

LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT Dear Graland Community, As we close the book on a successful, unpredictable 2019-20 year. I’d like to give a big thank you to departing trustees Sarah Alijani and Karen Reidy. We will miss their dedication, support, and enthusiasm for Graland. I’d also like to give a big welcome to new trustees Sara Knickerbocker, alumna Sarah Martin ‘95 Stettner, and Michael Bell. I would also like to thank our parents, students, dedicated faculty/staff, the administration, and the Board for their tremendous support during times that have truly been unprecedented. Today I looked back at Graland’s guiding principles which support our mission. I’m inspired by how the students and our community rallied and upheld those principles through this challenging time: pursue excellence; guide critical thinking; instill integrity; inspire leadership; promote independence; stimulate innovation; honor individuality; cultivate compassion; embrace experiences; celebrate perseverance; value tradition and build community. Given what was thrust upon our kids and all of us, I believe we did an outstanding job of upholding our principles. Graland’s leadership team mobilized very well in these circumstances to rapidly address the evolving situation and its impact on our children: In early March, Josh set up a COVID-19 task force comprised of very dedicated staff and administrators and supported by five board members. This group initially oversaw the shut-down of Graland’s campus and all that entails. In April we established a task force to oversee various financial scenarios for the next year and into the foreseeable future. To prepare for reopening, Graland committed to robust professional development for the faculty throughout the summer. Another group will look at the generative implications of what we are experiencing and envision Graland’s strategic approach for the next 5-10 years. We are very fortunate at Graland to have incredible teachers, dynamic leadership, committed alumni, and a supportive community. Being in the trenches with this team has reinforced to me that we are in excellent hands; I see first-hand the dedication, leadership, and commitment Josh and his team have to our community and our children. Financially, Graland’s prudent decision-making ensures the school has a strong foundation to survive these uncertain times.

Volunteer Spotlight: Elaine Oliver After landing in Denver only a year ago, selfdescribed “nomad,” Elaine Oliver, thinks she’s found her home. Originally from Michigan, Elaine has held addresses in New York (where she met her husband Andrew), Hong Kong (where her two older children were born), and most recently Chicago before a job opportunity brought the family to Denver. They joined the Graland community in the 2019-20 school year and right away felt welcomed. “I was surprised at how easy the transition was,” she admits. “Before school even started, another parent reached out to us because we were new and invited us to a pizza party. On the first day of school, my kids smiled and waved and walked right into their classrooms. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and it never did.” As a new parent, Elaine wasted no time getting involved at Graland and building a network of friendly connections. “I read all the committee descriptions over the summer and tried a variety of different activities and met a lot of people,” she remembers. “It was fun to volunteer in the classroom where I could see my kids in their environment and see Graland’s amazing teachers in action.” 14

Passing out dessert in the dining hall was a particular delight, as she not only felt like a hero to the children but she also observed “a mini psychology study in decision making” each time. “The kids who studied the dessert tray, contemplating the frosting-to-cake ratio, always made me laugh,” Elaine says. The Olivers now have three children at Graland: Charlie (Grade 2), Catherine (Grade 1), and Libby (Preschool). Aside from volunteering on campus, Elaine also enjoys the opportunities provided by the Graland Parent Association where she can serve in the community alongside her children. And in 2020-21, she is the representative-elect for the Early Childhood Learning Center and will be learning the duties of this position while shadowing the lead rep, Cullen Wold. If you are the newest parents at the school, Elaine recognizes this year is different, however suggests you look for a volunteer activity that inspires you and then go for it. “If you love it, great,” she says. “If not, move on and try something else. Being involved in the Graland community is the perfect way to connect with other parents, teachers, faculty, and staff.”

VOLUNTEERS Graland is grateful for all the parent volunteers who shared their time and talent with the school during the 2019-20 year. Graland would not be the same without the parents who give extra hours to share with our students, faculty and campus. Thank you! Graland has increased its effort to recognize parent volunteers. The school apologizes to any volunteer whose name may have been inadvertently omitted. Please contact Jeri Volpe at 303-399-8370 or jvolpe@graland.org to report any errors or omissions.

Giving Back to Graland: The Yao/Yim Family It’s said that some forks in the road - though marked by the unknown and filled with no small amount of trepidation - can lead to unexpectedly great things. For Tony Yao and Deborah Yim, the decision to move their young family from Los Angeles to Denver three years ago was one of these forks in the road. Tony, who is a portfolio manager for Denver’s Arrowmark Partners, had been trying to convince Deborah to move to Denver for almost ten years. However, Deborah was reluctant to leave Los Angeles as it was “home,” having lived in California most of her life and given birth to their children (Alex ‘26 and Justin ‘29) there. She had a fulfilling job as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Justice Department and planned to retire in L.A. As a compromise, the couple agreed that Tony would commute to his office in Denver and live there during the week, returning to Los Angeles on the weekends to be with their family. “I was certainly accumulating a lot of hotel and airline points during these years,” Tony jokingly recalls. They maintained this arrangement for years, but it was not easy being apart for such long periods of time, especially after their children were born. “We found ourselves at a crossroads when Alex and Justin were old enough to realize that daddy was gone for most of the week, and we could only see him a few days a month. I have a distinct memory seared in my mind, of my little girl crying as Tony drove away to the airport for yet another flight back to Denver. It was at that moment I knew we would have to choose between L.A. or Denver.” The Yaos made a decision to move to Denver in the summer of 2017, after the entire family visited the area and fell in love with the community, the beautiful mountains, and the family friendly lifestyle of the Mile High City. Deborah accepted a position as an attorney for the Department of the Interior, and she opened her own law practice this year. Once they decided to move to Denver, Tony and Deborah began researching schools for Alex and Justin, who were about to start kindergarten and preschool respectively. As Tony remembers, “The name that kept coming up in our research and recommendations from friends was Graland. Once we visited the school, we very quickly realized that this was exactly where our kids needed to be. The thoughtful approach to academics, innovative learning, creative programming, use of technology and unmatched facilities were compelling. But, more importantly, the warmth, camaraderie, and kindness of the community was very evident.” That was three years ago. “All these attributes that initially drew our family to Graland,” Deborah says, “continue to keep us grounded here. We are so gratified to have found a school community for our children that is like a home away from home, where they are not only attaining a first rate education but also learning how to be socially conscious citizens of our society.” Tony agrees, and notes that the welcoming Graland

community has eased their family’s acclimation to Denver. As Tony explains, “The folks we have met at Graland have been tremendously warm and welcoming to us, and we know that these will be our friends for life.” Deborah adds, “the pandemic has highlighted for us how truly important community is. The Graland community has really pulled together and supported each other during this difficult time.” Deborah is glad to give back to the Graland community by volunteering for the GPA as a co-chair of the Community Outreach Committee, and she has served as a room parent, library volunteer, and grade-level representative for the Graland Annual Fund. The family also generously supports the Inspire Campaign and the Annual Fund. “The Inspire Campaign to increase compensation for our teachers was especially important to us,” Deborah shares. “As a room parent, I was able to see our teachers in action -- how truly creative and innovative they are as educators. This was made even more evident during the pandemic when they were forced to rethink and reformulate the traditional education format and implement technology in new and interesting ways to keep our kids excited about learning. Equally important, our teachers really treat every child as their own, and go above and beyond in the care and love they have for our children.” Tony adds, “We also contribute to the Annual Fund because we want to help Graland continue to build upon its strong technology and innovation program, which includes Tinker Time and the Gates program, among other things. I see the speed of innovation in the financial world and it’s a major advantage for our kids to have access to growth areas of the future.” Having found a place to belong at Graland, Deborah and Tony choose to make giving and volunteering a priority for their family. “We are very lucky to be here at Graland,” Deborah says, “and we give back because we believe in our school’s mission to achieve intellectual excellence, build strong character, and prepare our students to be engaged citizens and thoughtful leaders.” 23

“Through art, music, drama, innovation, athletics and academics, Graland is committed to the whole child. While steeped in long standing traditions, Graland is nimble enough to respond to the ever-changing landscape of education and the world. As a past parent, trustee and board chair, I was continually impressed by the faculty’s dedication and level of excellence day in and day out. When all of that is combined with the leadership of Josh Cobb and his administrative team, Graland is an institution worth supporting. Another important reason for parent, past parent and alumni support is that Graland’s tuition does not cover the total cost of school programs and financial aid.”

-Doug Childs, Former Trustee

“ What inspires us to donate, volunteer, and hold various roles in the GPA is the commitment that Graland has in our community and the joy we see in our children. I enjoy being able to get glimpses of the school day all while working alongside the wonderful teachers and parents of the school. We feel fortunate to have our children at Graland and thankful that there are so many different opportunities to be involved. -Kalliope Balafas, Graland Parent PARENTS CONTINUED Max and Megan Schmid Eric Schmidt and Cristina Dugan Scott and Katie Schoelzel* Jenny Scholes ‘95 Terry and Elaine Scholes* Daniel Schrader and Megan Meyers Timothy Schuetz and Anna Phelan Ken and Elana Schwartzreich Marc and Megan Scremin Gil ‘95 and Lauren Selinger Howie and Marilyn Selinger* Vahid and Ariana Shabro Alex Shapiro and Michelle Kuba Nick and Kerry O’Shaughnessy ‘00 Sheedy Josh and Maia Selinger ‘98 Sidon Bernie Siegel, Jr. and Kimberly Siegel Justin and Dina Silverman Bill ‘95 and Josephine Sinclair Greg Sissel and Therese Ivancovich Sissel Steve and Myra Skinner Amy Slothower Chris and Sheilah Smith Lee and Sarah Solomon Gail Sonnesyn* Michael Spann and Diana Quezada Erik and Krista Speicher Sean and Sarah Spiegel Ben Stapleton IV and Stephanie Malliaris Stapleton David and Michele Steed Paul and Laura Steinwald

ALUMNI Dear Graland Alumni Community, It has been an honor and pleasure to work with fellow Graland Alumni Board members as well as the school leadership to represent, support, and engage with Graland alumni. The 2019-20 school year started strong with the Alumni Board’s continued focus on inclusivity to continue to draw more alumni back into the fold of Graland and connect with one another. We are so proud of the strong connection so many alumni have at Graland and how many roles they play at the school. This includes: 93 current parents are Graland alumni 7 trustees are Graland alumni 17 former trustees are Graland alumni 9 grandparents are Graland alumni 2 faculty/staff are Graland alumni 20 alumni board members

Prior to the pandemic, alumni enjoyed opportunities to engage with current Graland students, teachers, parents, and community members this past year by speaking at assemblies and presenting on a panel about the not-always-linear pathway to professional success. I wish to thank the more than 200 alumni who came back to campus for events such as the fall cocktail party and the winter young alumni event - they were both a huge success! Our second Graland in the Making event, which invites all alumni from Graland first 50 years to come back to Graland had to be postponed, but will be rescheduled for 2021. The annual Alumni Reunion scheduled for May had to be canceled, but all those milestone classes will be celebrated at the 2021 Reunion as well. Some of this year’s milestone classes still celebrated their reunions by holding very successful Zoom events, with participants attending from all over the country. I am pleased to report that 215 alumni showed their support for Graland by making gifts to the school in 2019-20. Alumni gifts were directed to the annual fund, financial aid, the school archives and the Inspire Campaign for faculty compensation. It is affirming to see alumni demonstrate their chance to “pay it forward” by making gifts to support today’s students and teachers! Due to the pandemic, I strongly believe the sense of community and acceptance is more important than ever. I couldn’t be prouder of the Graland Alumni Board members and their active engagement to be creative and problem-solve around the pandemic and continue to connect with the greater Graland alumni community. Don’t let the passage of time or the fact that you may live outside of Denver be a hesitation to get reconnected with Graland! I encourage you to reach out to me or to any board member listed here to learn more about the alumni board. We would be happy for you to suggest ideas, events or volunteer opportunities to support Graland and its ever-growing Alumni Community. Finally, I am thrilled to announce that David Watts ’92 started his two-year term as president of the alumni board this past summer. As I conclude my humble service on the alumni board, I encourage you to reach out and connect with each other, see challenges as just stepping stones to something greater, venture out and learn something new, and know Graland and the Alumni Community are behind you!

Therefore, it is our responsibility to foster this unique relationship to enhance the present environment and help shape the future experiences of generations to come. We seek to achieve this by encouraging alumni involvement with the school, representing alumni interests and advocating lifelong learning in accordance with the missions and long-standing traditions of the school.

ALUMNI NEWS ALUMNI Jeffrey Hughes ‘99: Not Your Average Violinist Musician Jeffrey Hughes has come a long way since he first picked up a child-sized violin at age 3. Today he is an accomplished artist who combines classical violin, soul, funk, rock, jazz and hip-hop to create an original sound. Hughes was acknowledged by Graland with an alumni achievement award named after former Graland teacher Nancy Priest. With the 92-year-old Priest in attendance at the award ceremony, Hughes reflected on his career path: “The violin and Graland, those are really the two best things that happened to me as a kid.” After being introduced to the instrument as a toddler, he continued his classical training, earning a scholarship to the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music. Hughes has spent his career exploring the versatility of the violin and expanding its audience. By bridging the gap between classical and modern music like hip-hop, he showcases a traditional instrument in a new way. Among other notable performances, Hughes has played for President and Mrs. Obama, with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, and at the Grammy Awards. “Music is a form of self-expression,” he said. “It is a wonderful feeling to express myself in positive ways. I love to perform.” Art teacher Cathy Naughton remembers the year Hughes came to Graland as an eighth-grader in the late ’90s: “He was a great kid who was very charming. He made friends easily and was extraordinarily well-liked.” The classmates are still connected, and many alumni from the class of 1999 were in attendance to see Hughes receive his award. Hughes attended Graland for two years and graduated after ninth grade. “I only wish I’d come sooner,” he said. “Graland prepared me for the real world. The environment and the school helped to give me the skills and tools that shaped me into the man I am today. “I’m very honored to receive this award in the company of such accomplished and incredible peers, for it was here where my dreams began and were fostered and cared for. I developed much of my identity at Graland, and began my evolution as a musician.” The Nancy Nye Priest Alumni Award is presented each year to recognize an outstanding Graland alumnus or alumna who, through their work, demonstrates an outstanding commitment to community and loyalty to the ideals nurtured at Graland.

20 years of innovation at the Gates Expo in March where  W140e celebrated inventors presented their best ideas and invention journeys to students, 52

faculty, and campus visitors.

Gates Endowment Inspires 20 Years of Innovation Special thanks to Diane Gates ‘69 Wallach for sharing her time, memories and perspective for the creation of this article. On December 19, 1998, Graland

alumnus Charles C. Gates, Jr. ‘34 presented the school with a $1 million gift to establish the Gates Innovative Invention Science Competition. Initiated to nurture and support creativity and the entrepreneurial spirit in elementary school students, this unique program came to Graland five years after Gates established the Grubstake Fund at California Institute of Technology. The Grubstake Fund was designed to assist faculty members who have a technology that may be commercially viable by providing funding to advance promising projects to the prototype or proof-of-concept stage. “Five years later, Dad said ‘it’s almost too late,’” shared Diane Gates ‘69 Wallach, daughter of the late Charlie Gates. “He said, ‘Third graders may be more creative than grown-ups. We have to get them starting to think like business people at an earlier age.’” Recognizing Graland as a much more experiential school than others, Mr. Gates approached the school with his idea to start an invention competition. The school responded with an emphatic “yes” immediately.

Expanding the Vision

Ten years later, in 2009, Mrs. Wallach introduced another school to the Gates Program, Cardigan Mountain School, an all-boys boarding school in New Hampshire. “Cardigan is a more traditional school than Graland, however, I recognized the need for boys to tinker,” she said. Cardigan is now in its 10th year and celebrating this milestone with a new lab inspired by conversations with Martin Twarogowski and Andy Dodge, co-director of the Gates Invention and Innovation Program at Graland. “I was so pleased to have Graland be involved in sharing its learning and success with Cardigan,” said Mrs. Wallach.

The Power of Endowments

The decision to endow the Charles C. Gates Invention and Innovation Program was a thoughtful and intentional one. “We wanted to ensure that money would always be there for the program and its leaders. We did not want the coaches worrying about funding or the program’s existence year-to-year. We wanted them to focus on the students and their work,” Mrs. Wallach explained. In the 20 years since the inception of the Gates program, the Gates Family has made additional contributions to Graland, most significantly during the school’s recent ASCEND campaign. Beyond the funding of the program itself, the family expanded its support with the creation of the Charles C. Gates Director of Innovative Learning, currently filled by Mr. Twarogowski. “We are so happy to have helped Graland create this position and to have endowed it to protect it,” said Mrs. Wallach. “This position is a total gift to Graland.”

Pride in Program Philosophy

Reflecting on the past 20 years of the Gates program here at Graland, Mrs. Wallach is proud not only of the program’s individual success, but even more so in its effect on the overall “way of thinking” for Graland students. “Dad always believed that real innovative thinking was a critical life skill. He said that Graland was the best education he ever had - more than any higher education or graduate program in which he was involved. The Gates program allows students to roll up their sleeves and ‘just do it,’ not to simply talk about problems and issues,” she shared. “I believe our hidden goal was always to have this way of thinking permeate the whole school. The Gates program is simply a tool, a vehicle for offering students an opportunity to dream, create, test and refine their problemsolving skills. We are so proud to see how that concept has been promoted and infused throughout all classrooms and grades at Graland.”

Graland Gratitude

As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Gates Innovation and Invention Program, the entire Graland Country Day School community extends its deepest gratitude to the Gates Family for its vision and for providing a lasting legacy to support student creativity and the entrepreneurial spirit.

“This very special gift allows Graland to embark on a project that should enthrall and inspire children here for generations to come. Not only will the endowment allow us to proceed with the very exciting plans we have been discussing, it also will enable the school to serve as a model to educational institutions across the country.” ~ Alexander “Exie” Harvey IV, Headmaster (December 18, 1998) 53

Montem Society Luncheon Last fall, Graland hosted a luncheon for Montem Society donors on campus. Guests included Jim ‘66 and Tudi Arneill, Ellie Caulkins, Diane Claassen ‘70 Nichols, David Claassen, Ronni McCaffrey, Susan Osgood and Kristin Robbins. These individuals showcased the breadth of our school community as their relationships included former head of school, current board member and grandparent, former board chair, alumni, parent of alumni, alumni board member and former faculty member.

Diane Claassen ‘70 Nichols with her father, David Claassen

Each attendee was kind to share his/her personal memories with the school, deep connection and strong desire to financially support the school into the future. A luncheon highlight was hearing from two eighth-grade students who shared remarks about their own experiences at Graland. Special thanks also go to Josh Cobb, Head of School, who gave a brief update of the school and his major priorities, and Jon-Erik Borgen ‘92, current parent, trustee and finance committee chair, who shared an overview of the school’s financial strength and fiscally responsible management.

Graland is forever grateful to all the Montem Society members who have included Graland in their estate plans. For more information about how you can create a legacy at Graland through planned giving, contact Jessica Goski at 303-336-3705 or jgoski@graland.org. 55

SPECIAL FUNDS Graland is grateful to donors who have established special, designated funds for the school. These special funds further the school’s mission through a variety of ways in concert with the donors’ intention and purpose. The funds listed below actively support Graland and new contributions are welcome at any time. Samantha Loewi Scholarship Fund Begun in 2012, the Sam Loewi Fund was initiated to enhance training for students, teachers and parents with regard to diversity and inclusivity efforts, and to assist students with diverse needs. Over time, the Fund has evolved, robustly furthering Graland’s commitment to inclusivity. Currently, it provides funds to assure that all students and faculty have the intellectual, physical and social-emotional tools and access necessary for them to pursue excellence. It likewise supports the Sam Loewi Unified Neighborhood Games, the culminating service learning event for Grade 4 students who spend their year building relationships with special buddies and learning kindness and respect for children who are physically and mentally different. Robert S. Romero, Sr. Scholarship Fund

Graland’s Archives and Heritage Project

The Robert S. Romero, Sr. Scholarship Fund was introduced in 2016 to recognize and honor Coach Romero upon his retirement after 39 years of teaching and coaching at Graland. This endowed fund will offer financial assistance in perpetuity to deserving students whose families cannot afford full tuition. Graland continues to strive to reach its goal to formally establish this fund within the school’s endowment and to officially name it in Coach Romero’s honor.

Graland’s Archives and Heritage Project has allowed the school to digitize many historic photos, documents and yearbooks. Carefully culled memorabilia and themed images from the Archives are displayed in the Corkins Center in an effort to connect the school’s history to current students’ learning and enjoyment. Funds are needed to assure all archival materials can be properly preserved, stored and shared with the broad school community.

Giving Back and Paying It Forward: Betty Arkell & Family

Betty Arkell, parent of alumni and former trustee, recognizes the incredible impact Graland had on her and her family: “We considered the Graland community of teachers and fellow parents to be extended family to our two children, as well as to David and myself. By going to Graland every day for so many years, it became the focal point of our lives.” Parents to Elizabeth ‘03 and Peter ‘07, Betty and David Arkell were and still are full time lawyers, and thus, Betty’s schedule did not allow her to spend as much time volunteering in the classroom as she would have liked. However, she prides herself on never missing a school performance or sporting event in which her children were involved. She did take on the volunteer role of serving as an Annual Fund Grade Representative - a role which was, and still remains, flexible in its time commitment and execution. After serving in this capacity, Betty was invited to join the Board of Trustees - a position which she was honored to hold from 2001 through 2007. “Sharing my time and effort on the Board was an opportunity for me to give back to the school that was giving so much to my children and my family,” Betty said. Betty is most grateful for the confidence that Graland instilled in her children throughout their elementary years of education. “While attending Graland, my children were encouraged to believe that they could do anything. Because of their teachers and the rest of the Graland

community, they have always had the skills and confidence to be flexible, adaptable, compassionate and aware of the broader world around them. Graland has helped make them into the people they are today,” she shared. Elizabeth Arkell ‘03 studied international relations as well as literature during her college years at Claremont McKenna College. After graduating, she accepted a job with the State Department that brought her abroad to the Middle East several times. Following her work at the American Embassy, she decided to shift her focus to law and graduated from Harvard Law School in 2017. She now practices law and lives in Washington, D.C. with her husband, Scott Anderson. Peter Arkell ‘07 ventured to Washington, D.C. as well to attend Georgetown University and obtain his undergraduate degree in economics. After graduating, he spent time in both New York City and San Francisco in the investment banking industry. Peter later shifted to venture capital work and, most recently, began working in business development with Intuitive Surgical, the maker of a roboticassisted surgical system of tools. “David and I are so pleased to continue supporting Graland,” Betty said. “It has helped our children thrive in their current lives; we want others to have an opportunity to experience it for themselves. In giving back to Graland, we likewise hope to ‘pay it forward’ to current and future Graland students.”

Graland is so grateful for the Arkell Family and their loyal giving for over 25 years. The school is likewise honored to list 366 donors in this year’s Gratitude Report who have donated to Graland five consecutive years or more - thank you!

Graland Gallop in September was the GPA’s main fundraiser in 2019 T20heafter the spring golf tournament was canceled because of COVID-19. The event raised $30,000 for GPA-sponsored programs.

GPA Purpose Statement

The purpose of the Graland Parent Association (GPA), as stated in its bylaws, is to support Graland Country Day School in achieving its mission, to work in partnership with the school to foster community, to promote volunteerism and to raise funds for the benefit of the school community.

62

GRALAND PARENT ASSOCIATION Hello Graland Families! Wow! What a year this turned out to be! Despite the mid-year interruption due to COVID-19 the Graland Parent Association continued to thrive and work at planning events and programs to bring our community together. The continuous goal of the GPA is to build community, promote volunteerism and raise funds to support its programs. Behind the scenes the GPA reworked events and programs to ensure the relevance, timing, and impact met the needs of our community. In the 2019-20 school year, 25 council members, 47 committee chairs, and over 450 volunteers cultivated an inclusive and vibrant community at events such as the Back to School Movie Night which drew its largest crowd yet and the Graland Gallop which raised over $30,000 and had more than 600 registered racers. This school year brought many changes for community outreach. We were excited to offer new opportunities that allowed students as young as 5 to volunteer, allowing whole families to participate in outreach together. Ekar Farm, Colorado Feeding Kids, Project Linus, and Capitol Hill United Ministries were some favorites from the year. A record setting 104 students and parents served at the annual Volunteers of America Snowflake Party in December. The community demand was so great we were able to offer monthly service opportunities. The Parent Education Network (PEN) assisted in bringing Tony Wagner to campus in the fall. Tony spoke about the need for traditional education to evolve so our students can become more curious, adaptable, and resourceful learners who meet the demands of the society and economy they will soon enter. In addition, PEN formed a wellness panel of local doctors and educators who gave personal and professional insight to parents on supporting student wellness through mindfulness, stress management, and intentionality. All GPA events and programs ran at or below budget all year and the GPA was on track to meet its annual budget obligations. Unfortunately, the campus closure in March and resulting cancellation of GPA spring events and programs affected the GPA’s ability to make its annual cash donation back to Graland during the 2019-20 school year. It was the continued support and involvement from parents that kept our community together even during the hardest of times. Many thanks to each one whose contribution and commitment made this a year to remember. With Gratitude,
