Why Hire a Personal Trainer?

Hello to all of our Grand residents! May you experience many blessings this holiday season. This month, I would like to talk about investing in you. What actions do you take to live a quality life today?

Here at The Grand, we have opportunities to continue growing physically, spiritually, intellectually, and socially. My goal is to support that. Participation in clubs and interest groups, improving your golf game, engaging in socialization at the Palm Center patio and the Village Center, serve many of these principles.

At Grand Fitness we want to help serve community wellness through physical

fitness. One component to achieve this is to hire a personal trainer. Our gyms are stocked with a wide variety of equipment and accessories to assist in making fitness effective and fun. Sometimes it helps to have professional help to better understand how to reach your goals, or how to work around physical conditions. I believe investing in a series of personal training sessions is a great investment that can catapult you toward achieving the results you seek. Pause and consider how you want to live the remainder of your life. If it includes autonomy, activity, discovery, then having a body that cooperates and supports these objectives, is worth the investment in you.

Here are some ways in which hiring a personal trainer is beneficial:

It’s easier to keep that commitment when you made a financial obligation, and have a set appointment.

2

With a certified trainer, you have an organized plan of where you start physically, where you want to go, and how you’re going to do it. The goal is clear and measurable.

3

As you progress, your trainer will adapt and alter your program to continue to challenge your physicality safely.

4

When encouraged by your trainer to safely to do a little more, it’s often surprising to experience what you are capable of.

victim is often unaware; however, the damage is done. Lifestyle contributors to heart disease are diabetes, physical inactivity, excessive weight and obesity, unhealthy diet, and excessive alcohol abuse (CDC, 2022).

1

Keeping you accountable. The biggest battle in exercise is consistency.

5

The accountability to show up, helps to solidify a longer-term lifestyle change for better health.

Let’s review some medical facts that can be helped by a regular exercise routine. In 2022, the CDC reports, that heart disease remains the largest cause of death in the United States. We lose someone every 34 seconds in this country from heart disease. One out of five heart attacks are silent. The

Physical activity guidelines for substantial health benefits recommend 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise weekly. The CDC goes on to recommend a multi-faceted approach that includes aerobic and balance training, and weight training at least 2x per week (HHS, 2018). A qualified trainer can help you effectively get closer to meeting these recommendations.

Stop by the Adobe or Cimarron Fitness center to learn more about how a personal trainer can help you.

We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call (CAM) 623-546-7432 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! You may also find more information about C.H.A.P.S. (including an application form to join) at suncitygrand.com – Volunteer Central – C.H.A.P.S. Resident Patrol

C.H.A.P.S.* SERVES THE GRAND COMMUNITY

C.H.A.P.S.* is a volunteer group made up of Sun City Grand homeowners. We serve two main functions: Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol.

VACATION WATCH

When residents are away from home for two weeks or more, they are encouraged to fill out a Vacation Watch form which is available in the Welcome Center and the Membership Office at the Palm Center, as well as online at suncitygrand.com. Completed forms are to be returned to the Membership Office in the Palm Center. Two criteria are required for homeowners to use this program: (1) homeowner must be away for a minimum of two weeks; (2) a keyholder must be identified on the request form. C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers will walk around the home checking for unlocked doors, unlocked or broken windows, etc. The goal is to make the house look occupied. When an irregularity is found, the designated keyholder will be notified. C.H.A.P.S.* does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.

EVENING PATROL

During evening hours, volunteers patrol our streets in Association vehicles to observe and report unusual activity. The volunteers look for breaches of security such as open garage doors, suspicious vehicles and/ or people. Street light outages and road hazards will be reported to the proper authorities.

TO VOLUNTEER

We are actively looking for new volunteers.

All residents are welcome. We will provide classroom and field training. There are two-person patrols where you select your days/evenings to volunteer and you select how many times each month you wish to volunteer. Call Carol Murr (CAM) 623-5467432 or the C.H.A.P.S.* office (623) 5467553 if you may be interested in joining us. Our next meeting is Tuesday, January 24th at 1:30 p.m. in the Aqua Fria Room at Cimarron. All homeowners are welcome to join us.

NOW FOR A FEW FRIENDLY REMINDERS

Did you know you can lock your garage door when you are away from your house for extended periods? Your wall mounted door control panel inside your garage has a “Lock” button, which when pressed and held for two seconds prevents operations of the door from any hand-held remote control. You can reverse the lock function by pressing and holding the “Lock” button for two seconds or by using the Outside Keypad if you have that feature on the outside of your house. Locking your garage can be especially useful when you are away from your house on vacation or while on summer escapes.

2Do you keep your garage door opener attached to your car’s front seat visor when your car is outside of your garage?

If your door opener is seen by a thief and he steals it along with your car registration address, he may get back to your house before you do. Burglarizing you while you are dining, worshipping, or shopping. Hide your garage door opener out of sight when keeping it in your car.

3Are your address house numbers lighted at night or are the bulbs burned out? Emergency personnel and also C.H.A.P.S.* evening patrollers need to be able to see your house numbers at night. Check those bulbs now. In addition, are your house numbers clearly read from the street, or are they faded and need to be replaced?

4Are your tree limbs growing into the city street signs? Evening patrollers travel a prescribed street-by-street route. If your tree is hiding a street sign, please have it trimmed back.

5Are you uncomfortable opening your front door at night, even if you believe the person at your door is a C.H.A.P.S.* volunteer? You do not have to open your front door at that time. Feel free to talk to us when we ring your door bell by using your intercom panel or talking through your closed security door. Security doors should be kept locked both day and night even when you are at home, and especially so when you are away from your house for any length of time.

*C.H.A.P.S.: Community Homeowner Association Patrol Service C.H.A.P.S. MEETS THE 4TH TUESDAY EVERY MONTH (except December) AT 1:30 P.M.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME. MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH C.H.A.P.S.

I am asked quite often how a certain project is going to impact the annual assessment (dues) each of us pay. A very fair question and one that deserves an answer.

The answer is, “it depends”! That’s an honest answer as it does depend on which fund we decide to use for support of that particular project or initiative.

A bit vague?? Certainly. So, allow me to attempt to explain the different funds used in GRAND to provide services to keep our current amenities fresh and clean, and be able to provide new amenities for our fellow residents. (See graph on opposite page)

WHICH FUND?.. AND… WHAT FOR?

Operating Fund: November 1 Balance of $14.9 million. This fund’s title best describes it’s purpose, which is to support the daily operation of all elements within GRAND. The Operating Fund is funded primarily through the annual assessment and other revenue generated throughout the year.

Reserve Fund: November 1 balance of $22.5 million. The Reserve Fund is used to support the replacement of assets valued in excess of $2,500. When these assets are in need of replacing, the Reserve Fund is used to pay for their replacement. The Reserve

Fund is funded through a portion of the homeowner’s annual assessment, and at times a limited amount of “unrestricted” retained earnings.

CARE Fund: November 1 balance of $6.5 million. The CARE Fund is used to support the planning, development, design, and implementation or purchase of new projects or assets. This fund may also be used to support planned Capital Projects such as lake hard edging, turf removal, and more. This fund is funded by a CARE Fee paid by the purchaser of a home within GRAND. That CARE Fee today is $5,000.

20 Grand Lifestyles | December 2022 | suncitygrand.com

It is estimated that when a new homeowner purchases a home in GRAND, they are buying into a community valued in excess of $15,000 per home. The CARE Fund affords GRAND the resources needed to provide new or improved amenities for all residents without adding any financial burden on existing homeowners.

Retained Earnings: November 1 balance of $3.5 million. Retained Earnings represent the sum of prior years’ surplus and may be used at the Board of Directors’ discretion for capital improvements and any unforeseen expenditures such as uninsured damage caused by windstorms.

Our Board of Directors recently agreed to set aside $1.8 million as “Restricted Retained Earnings” which represents approximately seven percent of our budgeted annual revenue. As is the case with our Reserve Fund, the amount set aside helps protect all of us from any “special assessment”.

The remaining balance of $1.7 million is referred to as “Unrestricted Retained Earnings”. These monies may be used for Capital Projects the Board of Directors chose not to use CARE Funds to support. We are planning to use a portion of these “Unrestricted Retained Earnings” to support year two of the five-year Turf Reduction Plan for our common area

at $300K and the completion of the planned turf removal on Granite Falls North next summer at $400K.

This will result in a balance of $1 million in our “Unrestricted Retained Earning”. Due to many uncertainties, we felt it best to not commit any use of these dollars until a more certain future is available.

I do hope this helped everyone in understanding the several funds we have to use each day. We are in very good financial shape and will continue to strive to stay that way. Thank you.

Stay Well, Keep Moving, and Be Kind to Others.

Story of Chanukah

The eight-day Jewish celebration know as Hanukkah or Chanukah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend, Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December.

When the Jews took part in the rededication of the Second Temple they witnessed what they believe to be a miracle. Even though there was only enough

untainted olive oil to keep the menorah’s candles burning for a single day, the flames continued flickering for eight nights, leaving them time to find a fresh supply. This wondrous event inspired Jewish sages to proclaim a yearly eight day festival.

For that reason, only one candle is lit on the first night. Two candles are lit on the second night. Three candles are lit on the third night until all eight candles are lit on the last night.

Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is celebrated with lighting of the Menorah, traditional foods, games and gifts.

MEET YOUR BOARD MEMBER

This is the fourth in a series of articles about your Board of Directors. It is one initiative of our goals this year to make your board more transparent and better known to the community. Each month, we will give you a glimpse of one board member’s background. We hope this will be interesting to you.

Tony Spata

My wife (Joy) and I moved to Grand four-years ago from Arlington Heights, IL. We were both born in Chicago, and always lived within the city or an adjoining suburb. Our love for the entertainment, culture, restaurants and special events offered by Chicago resulted in us maintaining a “pied-à-terre” in its River North area for many years as our escape from suburban living. (We are definitely “Urban”, not “Rural”.) Our son still lives in a NW Chicago suburb, and his spare bedroom is our base of operations when we go back for visits.

As a licensed Professional Engineer that specializes in Building Systems (the mechanical, electrical, security, fire protection and plumbing aspects of structures) I enjoyed a great forty-plus year business career working for great national / international companies in the retail (Walgreens), foodservice (McDonald’s) and hospitality (Hyatt) industries. From travel to almost sixty countries, I have experienced many of our world’s numerous cultures, customs and living conditions firsthand, and am very grateful for the life my wife and I have enjoyed here in the USA.

I knew my body was ready for retirement in 2019 (it has spent more than two-million miles flying around the world), but my brain was not. Golf, bicycling, photography, leisure travel (rather than the almost-weekly “Get-ona-plane-NOW!” for business) and DIY projects at our house provided what the body desired, but the “gray stuff” wanted more. Initially,

occasionally doing consulting for select friends in the industries I had been part of was sufficient.

However, my brain also wanted to contribute to our community, as my previous hectic schedule did not afford many opportunities to “give back” on a regular basis. The home we purchased in Grand was vacant for about 8 months before we moved in and, as we appreciated the Vacation Watch service C.H.A.P.S. offered, they were the first group I joined. It was through participation with them I was able to become acquainted with our various neighborhoods, and somewhat understand the roads within Grand. (Coming from Chicago and its suburbs with their layout of streets primarily in a grid pattern, this place is still confusing to navigatehooray for GPS!) Kudos to them and their many volunteers, especially for their Night Patrols helping ensure our garage doors are closed at night.

Next came joining the Architectural Review Subcommittee, then moving up to the main Committee. As with my involvement in C.H.A.P.S., my knowledge of Grand grew. I gained insight on the establishment of our community’s original design concepts, how they were maintained, and how our Residential Design Guidelines evolved. It was during this time the ARC undertook a complete front-to-back update of the RDGs, resulting in a document that: incorporated input from our residents, facilitated enhanced outdoor living, and recognized new materials and technologies.

It was also about this time I started to offer classes through Grand Learning on basic home automation and LED lighting & Lighting controls. (BTW – I receive no financial compensation for this.) Our homes, while 20-to-25 years old, are remarkably easy to upgrade to the latest “smart” technologies, with a wide-range of benefits available. (Check out the course descriptions for ALL the classes Grand Learning offers – they have something for everyone.)

Subsequently, I became involved with the Technology Subcommittee of Long Range Planning, then migrated to be a member of LRP. (My brain would just not respond “NO MORE!” to requests for its involvement.) Both groups were instrumental in my seeing (and helping form) the future vision for Grand; one of linking and maintaining its heritage while adapting it for our next generation of residents.

And finally, it was inevitable to run for election as a Board member. With knowledge of our past, an understanding of the direction for our future, and technical skills that could assist in decision making regarding our physical assets, how could my brain decline? (I’m really glad it arrived at this point incrementally, otherwise it would be similar to attempting a marathon without training.)

So here I am. In addition to the responsibilities shared by all Board members to our community, I additionally function as the liaison to ARC, Village Center Phase II Subcommittee and Charter Clubs Peer Group Council (CCPGC). Each of these groups, as with so many others, is essential for both preserving what we enjoy at Grand, and assisting in meeting our future wants and necessities.

My brain, and my body, are very happy to call Grand home.

Knowing the widow’s wealth is untouchable, the stepchildren commit her to a sanatorium. GRAND EVENT 2023 GRAND SERIES: THE PAPAS

& MAMAS

The Mamas and the Papas become a pivotal part of American culture in the 1960’s. The very roots of the hippie movement can be directly traced to their artistic influence. Their unique style and light pop arrangements helped put California on the musical map and the laid-back 60’s West Coast lifestyle was born. Billed as a loving tribute to the original 1960’s rock band, The Papas & Mamas recreate the musical chemistry of one of the few North American groups to maintain widespread success during the British Invasion. BILL ANDREWS

Meets 2 times on Thur 12/1/22 - 12/8/22

9:00 AM - 10:30 AM FEE $20

One of the most recognized symbols of the Old West is the Wells Fargo stagecoach being pulled by horses. But the history of this 192-year-old company encapsulates so much more. Founded in the board rooms of the east and maturing in the west, Wells Fargo is interwoven into not just the history of the West, but the entire nation. The company was present in the California Gold Fields, Nevada’s Comstock Lode and innumerable other gold and silver strikes. Wells Fargo is closely associated with the transportation of gold and silver coin and dust, express delivery, mail, including the Pony Express and banking. But there is also much more. Join us as we review the early history of this company, its ability to transform itself with the changing times and its unique leaders who guided the company through prosperity and hardship.

DRAMA & COMEDY CLUB

The Drama & Comedy Club presents theater entertainment to the community, performing plays and musicals on the Sagebrush Stage and comedy skits at the Cimarron Nightclub. Our motto, “On Stage, Back Stage, A Place for Everyone” describes our belief that we welcome everyone to our club where they can find a place to contribute and feel welcome and productive. We have many opportunities for folks who are organizers or who want to expand their creativity. Most of our members are not actors! Some of our members do have acting and directing experience, and they are ready to share their techniques to those members who want to learn new skills. We offer so many opportunities to be involved in costuming, make-up, marketing, and communication, and technicians for lights and sound. Do you like to redecorate? You might be a wonderful set designer. Are you a DIY kind of guy? Or gal? Join the construction crew building sets that take you to a governor’s office and campaign, or an old English mansion on a foggy night. If you like to greet people, we welcome you to volunteer to be an usher. What a great way to make new friends. We are a fun club! And all this for just $10 a year. Check us out at www.granddrama.com.

We also offer dance classes at many levels, sure to fit one of your styles, from beginner to advance tap and jazz. There is also the opportunity to dance with the Grandettes, a favorite Grand tradition, and perform in our Variety Show. This year will be the 23rd season! Not only is dance a great exercise but you will not come out of a class without making new friends. For any inquiries about dance, please contact Robin Kachurak, Dance Committee Chairperson at 818-795-4859.

Tucked away in Sun City Grand, three times a week, we play Chess and forget about everything else. It’s true, while playing Chess with us, you think only of Chess, an inexpensive (no membership fees) and calorie-burning activity (yes, it’s true, you burn lots of calories playing Chess).

You’ll need to know the basics as we won’t be spending too much time teaching, but we are welcoming and friendly to everyone, even if you aren’t Bobby Fischer!

So, check us out, Mate. Just show up, with or without a board and pieces, and be ready for a rewarding escape. We usually meet in the Agua Fria room (Cimarron) at 11:30 -3:30 Monday and Wednesday and the Sago Room at the Palm Center on Friday. This is subject to change, so call us first at 623-293-2884 for Paula, or 203979-1194 for Marty.

WEEDS

Friendly Reminder From Standards

We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

GRAND REPUBLICANS INTEREST GROUP

Our well-attended September General Meeting featured Mr. Loren Spivack, Economist and selfproclaimed “Free Market Warrior.” He titled his presentation “Why we Fight - Understanding the Modern Left - what they really want.” He combines education, information and humor in explaining the perils and dangers of today’s Left. He paraphrased the late Supreme Court Justice Anton Scalia: “Socialism promises everything and delivers nothing; Capitalism promises nothing, (except ‘if you don’t work, you don’t eat,’) but has delivered the greatest standard of living the world has ever seen.”

The October 15 General Meeting featured popular conservative radio host and accomplished speaker, Mr. Seth Leibsohn. Co-author, along with William J Bennett, of “The Fight of Our Lives,” Leibsohn used two different sources to help explain how our country has gone down the path it has gone. The first was from a fourpoint Epoch Times article “How to Change a Government.” The second is from Saul Alinsky’s twelve-point “Rules for Radicals.” The bottom line: “We need to wake up, grow up, and get ready for the fight of our lives!”

In place of a General Meeting in November the Club is having a catered post-election Veteran’s Day bar-b-que at the Grand Pavilion. Our special guest speaker is none other than General “Mick” McGuire!

For our December 17 meeting, we are very excited to present Mr. Shane Krauser. He is billed as arguably the most dynamic speaker and educator on liberty and the U.S. Constitution. A trial attorney for 14 years, both as prosecutor and criminal defense attorney, Krauser has taught Constitutional Law for over 15 years at two different Arizona colleges. If there was ever a time to defend our liberty and the Constitution, it is now!

We plan to meet every month during 2023 and 2024, including the summer months, as

campaigns begin and events unfold leading up to the 2024 presidential election. Please watch our website, grandrepublicans.com for more detail. While there, click on the “about” tab and read our Vision, Mission and Values statements. We may be just the group you are looking for! You are also encouraged to click on the Liberty Ladies tab to see and appreciate how they are serving the cause of conservatism in our communities.

Our General Meetings will continue to take place on the third Saturday morning each month at Church on the Green, 19051 R H Johnson Blvd in Sun City West.

SOUND & LIGHTING

The SCG Drama & Comedy Club and the Music Club provides quality theater and musical events throughout the year to our community. We are fortunate to have many talented residents who volunteer their time and talents and spend many hours of rehearsal to ensure top entertainment for you! And no commute or parking fees!

One of the many things the two clubs have in common in presenting this outstanding live entertainment is sharing the talents of our volunteer Sound and Lighting teams. The teams are often pressed to do shows back-to-back, which puts a demand on this skill set. As the Drama Club and Music Club prepare for a full 2022-2023 season, we are looking for persons who may have an interest in sharing their talents or learn new skills involving these areas. No prior experience or knowledge of sound or lighting equipment is needed. We have volunteers who will train anyone who is interested. Many hands make light work. No pun intended – it is light work! And sound work! But many persons sharing makes easier work.

Here is your opportunity to become a member of Sun City Grand’s entertainment community. Give it a try, you may discover not only a new interest, but you will be sure to make some great new friends. For more information, please contact Ove Jakobsen at 256-721-0431 or ovejakobsen@ msn.com for sound or Bob Nix at 623-214-8280 or bobnix@cox.net for lighting.

You will not be on your own, you will be a valuable member of the team who will help you learn a new skill. As any actor or musical performer will attest, your valuable skills create the magic of live performances. You’ve seen it, how about helping make it happen!

STATE OF MINDFULNESS

The SCG state of Mindfulness Interest Group is a mindfulness community, practicing together, bringing peace, compassion, and gratitude to our selves and those around us. Group meditation can help develop a real connection with people while tapping into the same silence and source of peace, all at the same time. The SCG State of Mindfulness Interest Group is focused on science and evidence based tools and resources. DETERMINING WHICH STREAMING SERVICE IS BEST

Georgia from Grand

Dear Georgia,

Your question is excellent, and a good follow up to Cappie’s October column about streaming. The best streaming app for YOU depends on what type of content you watch, where/how you watch that content, and how much you are willing to pay for that content.

n Content. Make a list of the programs and channels you watch regularly. Then check the website www.cnet. com, a trusted resource for tech questions. Its October 12, 2022, article “Live TV Streaming Services: A Look at the Top 100 Channels” provides a chart that compares six streaming services. It identifies which services provide which of the 100 most popular channels for free or as a subscription. Does any streaming service include enough of the channels you want to warrant its subscription? Do you really want only linear TV (traditional networks) and HBO? [See endnote A for the list of streaming services (that bundle apps.]

n Devices. Most people today like to stream on multiple devices, not just on televisions but on mobile phones, tablets, desktops,

game consoles-- and in multiple locations. Most streaming services offer tiered plans with varying price levels.

n Cost. What do YOU value?

✺ You miss weekly tv shows and HBO. You can buy a home antenna to pick up local tv stations for free and you can stream HBO with your existing internet on a smart TV, phone, or computer. An antenna is a one-time purchase of under $50, and HBO Max is $15 a month.

✺ A streaming alternative to an antenna, if most of your favorite TV shows are on NBC and/or CBS would be Peacock and/ or Paramount+, each $5 per month. Like HBO, these apps give you the option to watch shows at any time and you can unsubscribe at any time. [See endnote B for descriptions.]

✺ However, when your friends talk about their favorite programs (e.g., “Rings of Power” or “House of the Dragon”) or when streaming services create award-winning originals (e.g., “CODA” for Best Picture Oscar

or “Ted Lasso for Best Actor Emmy”), you may want to want to add apps like Netflix, STARS, Showtime, Hallmark or platforms like AmazonPrime or Apple+, if you did not choose a streaming service which includes them.

✺ Streaming is evenmore convoluted as media companies reorganize themselves to stay profitable. One example is professional football. Most Sunday and Saturday NFL and college football games are included in Sling, YouTubeLive, and Hulu streaming services. However, “NFL Red Zone” is an additional subscription; the rights to “Thursday Night Football” belong to Amazon Prime, another subscription; and “Sunday Ticket Football” is currently negotiating with AppleTV, which might be yet another subscription.

✺ Keep track of how you sign up for individual apps. Subscriptions are offered by streaming services, by cellphone carriers, in “marketplaces,” and as

View the digital version of “Ask Cappie” monthly column by going to www. grandinfo.com. Click on the More News>Grand Lifestyles Magazine> to choose the month you want to view. Special thanks to Barb for this lovely photo (taken by Gail Roberts) of Charlie, who came to live with Barb through Happy Tails Dachshund Re cue. Charlie had been taken in by Surprise Animal Control in 2021. Although she had had some difficult times in her ten years, her tail is constantly wagging.

standalones. Subscriptions often offer free trials, sales, or promotions, perhaps dependent on continuation after the trial period. It is easy to lose track of total spending.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT
Dear Cappie,
Since discontinuing cable TV, I miss my weekly TV shows and HBO. I know there are streaming apps both for free and by subscription, but I want to pay for only one. My friends recommend Amazon Prime, Hulu, Netflix, or Disney. What do I do?
60 Grand Lifestyles | December 2022 | suncitygrand.com

All of the above planning can be done before a person “cuts the cord,” i.e., drops cable, to compare costs. It really won’t matter if streaming saves you a lot of money, however, if you no longer have your favorite channels or if you struggle to

find and play programs. Not everyone likes maintaining favorites or being able to stream a program at any time. Cappie strongly recommends that you try streaming for a month as a parallel system. Subscribe to the service or apps you think

you want and start using them. Don’t use the cable … but don’t cancel it during the trial period while streaming.

Finding the right streaming service can be overwhelming. The term streaming evolved in the early ‘90s, but it was only about fifteen years ago that smart TVs allowed users to “stream” music and videos. Your grandchildren have grown up with this technology while most of us have been golfing or learning how to play pickleball. Be kind to yourself and don’t try to learn everything from one Google search or Cappie column. Keep in mind that technology is never static.

Endnote: Prices, streaming services, platforms, apps, availability change continually. Check the internet and

individual websites for specific descriptions.

Endnote A: YouTube TV, Disney’s Hulu+LiveTV and SlingTV (both Orange and Blue) are perhaps most well-known, BUT Philo, Fubo, DirecTV, AXS TV, Discovery Life, GSN and Universal HD are also streaming services.

Endnote B: Peacock is owned and operated by the Television and Streaming division of NBCUniversal. Paramount+ content is drawn primarily from the libraries of CBS Networks and Paramount Pictures. Like Peacock, it also includes original series and films, live streaming sports coverage, and live streaming of local affiliate broadcast stations.

Fitch upgrades Surprise credit rating to

bringing Library Services in-house

Surprise

Libraries have always held a very special place in the Surprise community; so much more than just a place to check out books, Surprise libraries have been a spot to engage and get involved in our community, a place to learn, grow and innovate. After very careful consideration, the Surprise City Council and City staff decided that the next steps for our City’s growth is to bring our library services in-house mid-next year. The City has already been paying 100% of the operational cost of the libraries, so there will be no impact on the Fiscal Year 2023 budget as a result of this conversion. While this is an exciting time marked with new opportunities and ideas, many of the services you’ve grown to love will stay in place. If you have other questions or want to provide feedback, please visit surpriseaz. gov/library or email Kelsey Lamphier, Acting Director of the Arts, Culture & Library Department at Kelsey.Lamphier@ surpriseaz.gov.

‘AAA’ Fitch Ratings, one of the “Big Three” nationally recognized credit rating agencies, has upgraded the City’s Excise Tax Revenue Obligations and Issuer Default Rating to ‘AAA’ from ‘AA+.’ A city’s credit rating is important due to its impact on interest rates in the bond market. A better rating means the City can sell bonds to finance capital projects and pay a lower interest rate to the buyer. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3Se3Xiz

Dining at the

Grand Cafe

Stop by the Grand Café to see what’s cooking. Our culinary team had fun coming up with some tasty menu items to get you excited and coming back for more!

Try our new Chicago style hot dog or a classic grilled ham, tomato & cheddar sandwich. We love feedback. Let us know what you think of the new menu changes by talking to us in the café.
