FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
A MESSAGE FROM OUR GENERAL MANAGER, DAVID TWIGGS
Happy Holidays!
W. David Twiggs General Manager
We wish you a happy and healthy December and New Year. With the holidays here, I know money is the last thing you want to hear about, but financially, we are ending strong as we close the year. On November 11, the Board of Directors approved the 2022 budget following weeks of preliminary work conducted by the Finance Advisory Committee (FAC), additional Board committees, CAM staff, and volunteers. This yearly budget process has created one of the greatest strengths of this community that contributes to residents' satisfaction and attractiveness to potential homeowners. According to many homebuyers, in addition to examining the landscaping, outside maintenance, checking out the conditions of the amenities and common indoor space, the review of the HOA finances ranks high in their process before purchasing a home. And for the same reasons homebuyers want to buy are the same reasons that keep current homeowners in the community. Knowing the association's financial situation is crucial, especially the amount of money in their reserve. The community has to have adequate funds to pay for capital improvements, ranging from replacing expensive common-area elements, like heating and cooling, to repairing sidewalks. If money is not well managed, unlike our case, significant increases in assessment fees occur as they are directly tied to the association's financial management. This year residents will see a 2% increase in assessments from the previous year, which showcases the strength of our finances. Residents can track how well their finances are managed each month. We post reliable, consistent, and transparent financial statements to help the Board of Directors make wellinformed decisions to support community financial health and to allow all residents and other stakeholders access to the information, enabling them to be a part of the conversation. Also, each month our Finance Advisory Committee Meetings and Board Meetings review finances, which are open to the residents for feedback. Check out the total 2022 budget on suncitygrand.com Thanks to FAC, Board committees, Board of Directors, and staff, you won't have to worry about these finances going into the holidays this season.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
Welcome back
RESIDENTS
If you are just getting back into town and you are finding that your game might be a little rusty, I want to remind you that my staff and I are available for lessons to help get that rust off. It is amazing on how just one lesson can improve your game and give you more enjoyment and confidence.
Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations
Staff is looking forward to another spectacular season. I want to invite all of you to come out to the three golf shops and look at all the great new merchandise that has been arriving. We feel that this is our best year ever for merchandise selection and hope that you agree. Staff wants to remind everyone that is just getting back into town to remember to bring your resident card with you every time you check in. Every resident must check in with the golf shop with their I.D. card to receive the resident rates. To help keep our operating cost down and to make it easier for you, we have a credit book available. A credit book is a way for you to place an amount of money on an account and every time you play or buy something, it deducts from that account. It saves us the credit card swiping fees and still allows you to get the benefit of using a credit card. This will also allow you to skip the long check in lines on shotgun days by just signing your name on a list at the golf shop.
Our teaching staff consists of: Jeff Hochman, Class A PGA $50 for 30-minute lesson (located at Desert Springs) PGA Specialized in Teaching & Coaching (On-Course Coaching Sessions Available) Kevin Reagan, Class A PGA $45 for 30-minute lesson (located at Granite Falls) Cassidy Potter, Class A PGA $40 for 30-minute lesson (located at Desert Springs) Kirk Hanaway, Class A PGA $40 for 30-minute lesson (located at Cimarron)
Kim Hunley, Class A PGA $40 for 30-minute lesson (located at Desert Springs) Jennifer Johnson, Class A LPGA $40 for 30-minute lesson (located at Granite Falls) Matt Boher, Associate $30 for 30-minute lesson (located at Desert Springs) Eric Swobody, Associate $30 for 30-minute lesson (located at Granite Falls) Art Nelsen, Associate $30 for 30-minute lesson (located at Cimarron)
We also have group clinics available called “Cactus Practice” located at Cimarron on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10am-11am for $20/pp. Please don’t forget to repair ball marks on the greens and to fill divots. On your last hole of play in a shotgun, please take a few minutes to empty out your sand containers and fill as many divots as you can. This will help keep the courses in great shape. Until next month, keep it in the short stuff.
"State of Mind" SCG Interest group is for residents interested in Mindfulness practices that can enhance our well being and resilience.

WEEDS
Friendly Reminder From Standards We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
COGNITIVE
health
What does cognition have to do with our physical health?
Allison Adams Fitness Manager
When we speak of cognition and cognitive health, we’re referring to brain health. Maintaining a healthy and functioning brain is a priority for quality of life. Brain health therapies are more prominent in recent years, as growing awareness of the many forms of dementia are garnering focus by the scientific community. According to the Oxford dictionary, cognition is “the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses”. As we age, many of us experience changes in our cognitive health, usually when we start to see lapses in our short-term memory, however, there are many processes that can be modified as we age, including attention, language, learning, memory, perception, speed and reasoning of thought. 14
Well, Physical exercise spares age-related loss of brain tissue and enhances functional aspects in the control of cognition (https:// www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/ articles/PMC3951958/). It’s relevant to point out that the World Health Organization differentiates physical exercise from physical activity in relation to the topic of maintaining or improving cognitive health. It defines physical exercise as “a subcategory of physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and has as a final or an intermediate objective, the improvement or maintenance of one or more components of physical fitness” (https://www.ncbi. nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/ PMC5934999/). According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), there is much evidence to show that physical exercise “affects brain plasticity, influencing cognition and wellbeing” (Weinberg and Gould, 2015; for review see Fernandes et al., 2017), As a gene regulator, exercise generates structural changes in the brain.
You may be familiar with the term, neuroplasticity. It’s become more common to hear this term in current TV commercials promoting a pill to maintain or enhance memory. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s modification to experiences. It refers to the formation and reorganization of synaptic connections through the brain’s experiences. In other words, neuroplasticity can reset our internal systems. Biologically, physical exercise enhances oxygen levels through improved blood circulation throughout the brain. Psychologically, physical exercise is known to decrease symptoms of anxiety, depression, hostility, and headaches.
What kind of exercise should we do to positively impact our cognitive health?
Aerobic activity has shown to have a larger influence on improved memory and cognition than strengthtraining, not surprising, considering the health benefits of higher oxygen transmission via robust blood circulation, and developed through consistent aerobic practice. Studies have shown that higher intensity exercise increases cognitive health over lower-intensity. It’s important to point out, however, that the key is consistent movement to deliver cognitive benefits.
Why do we see cognitive decline as we age? Science reports that cognitive decline in aging can be attributed to medical illness, psychological factors, genetic, vision and auditory impairments, as well as lifestyle choices.
Some may need to start with gentler exercises such as T’ai Chi or Chi-Gong. That’s okay as long as there is a beginning. Although often not as vigorous as many aerobic methods, yoga is proven to be a positive tool to prevent cognitive decline due to its focus on body awareness and meditative nature.
Those who are more consistently active in life are shown to retain higher cognitive function than non-active persons; those higher fit individuals process information more quickly.
If you are starting out slower, over time higher intensity exercise like walking, running, dancing, and HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) are great choices. The goal is to be consistent.

The True Meaning BEHIND OUR COMMUNITY
THE HOLIDAYS ARE HERE, AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS? The gift of giving is ever-present across the world, including our community. We’ve received some of the greatest gifts. From our Billy Casper and Steve Nash championship golf courses to our state-of-the-art Fitness Centers and Pools, and so much more. We’ve been given the present of living life to the fullest in a resort-like community, thanks to our hard-working staff and volunteers.
YOU CAN MAKE AN IMPACT With all the glitz and glam of our offerings, it’s important to understand the true meaning behind our community in order to truly appreciate our vibrant home. It all starts with participation and leadership. With the help of our dedicated volunteers and staff to keep our community a place where members are proud to call home, seven elected individuals lead our community forward, known as the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors makes important, impactful decisions that provide us with some of the greatest gifts we are presented year-round.
GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY This holiday season, four positions on the Board of Directors will soon become available. Consider running for the Board of Directors and receive the gift of giving back to the community. Follow our story for an inside look on what makes our community unique and how you can participate.
WHO
A community run by residents. Formerly part of Del Webb and later on Pulte, our members adopted Sun City Grand, and is now governed by our community Board of Directors. Each Board member is a resident homeowner, just like you. Day-to-day operations are carried out by our Community Association Management (CAM) team of experienced professionals, headed by our General Manager, who in turn reports to the Board of Directors.
WHAT
The Board of Directors are seven members who work together on behalf of all community members for the greater good. The Board of Directors provides executive leadership and strategic governance. They oversee the community's short- and long-term goals, including major projects and infrastructure improvements, such as community enhancements, land use, finances, and strategic planning. Each director is elected to serve a two-year term, and this year, four directors are up for re-election.

Rene Mitchell, current Board Member Volunteering to serve our community is a privilege. It's an opportunity to apply my past skills and knowledge and a way to give back to the community. Carol White, current Board Member I enjoy being able to look at the community as a whole, with all our competing interests and ideas, and trying to figure out how to best serve those needs and desires as we go forward. We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call (CAM) 623-546-7468 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! You may also find more information about C.H.A.P.S. (including an application form to join) at suncitygrand.com – volunteer central – C.H.A.P.S. Resident Patrol
KEEPING US SAFE
Our Surprise Police Department is committed to maintaining a safe community by providing extraordinary law enforcement service with an emphasis on professionalism, accountability, and respect. They do their part, we can do ours too! The volunteers in C.H.A.P.S. care, perhaps more than most, about the safety of all of us here in our little piece of paradise, Sun City Grand. It isn’t a coincidence that our neighborhoods are safer than most. They are safer, because you take the time to look out for your neighbors and volunteers to be of service to your neighbors by joining us in C.H.A.P.S. As the weather cools, and we open our windows and doors and enjoy the fresh air there are some common sense things you can do to stay safe. n Make sure your security door is locked during the day. n Make sure you’ve locked all windows and doors before you go to bed. n Don’t spread your business to strangers. The good guys may be listening to you about your next trip, but so are the bad ones.
n
Be cautious about trades people you let into your home and do not leave them alone in your home.
If you do hear something go bump in the night, remember that you can keep your extra key fob on your nightstand. If you hear your neighbor’s horn go off, call 9-1-1, your neighbor is in crisis! Likewise, if your neighbors hear your horn blaring, they will call 9-1-1 for you! This easy alarm system is a great idea especially for those who live alone. If you would like to join us, at a C.H.A.P.S. meeting, we meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 1:30 P.M. in the Sonoran Plaza (the exception is December, we do not meet in December). You can also find out more about C.H.A.P.S. by visiting Volunteer Central https:// www.suncitygrand.com/grandlifestyles/volunteer-central Be safe out there!
NOTES FROM FACEBOOK ON CAR ALARM Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn if off or the car battery dies. This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage. After a few seconds, all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there. P.S. Would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a phone. This may save a life!

Journey with us this winter to Biosphere 2, named by Time Life Books as one of the 50 must see wonders of the World. Dedicated to the research and understanding of global scientific issues, Biosphere 2 serves as a center for research, outreach, teaching and life-long learning about Earth, its living systems, and its place in the universe. The University of Arizona Biosphere 2 consists of a unique large-scale experimental apparatus housing seven model ecosystems, a team of multidisciplinary scientists, a broad science education and public outreach program, and a modern conference center. This remarkable opportunity to explore one of the world’s most unique facilities also includes a delicious luncheon of freshly prepared sandwiches and salads, catered by the talented chefs at Oracle Patio Café. Don’t miss it!
Based on a true story, The Hello Girls is a jazzy new musical about the unsung heroines of World War I—America’s first women soldiers. Fighting in France, the United States Army was having trouble with the phones. Speed was essential in the dispatch of information, and calls weren’t getting through fast enough. Bilingual telephone operators volunteered for the front lines to help turn the tide of World War I, then returned home to fight a decades-long battle for equality and recognition. The Hello Girls tells a powerful war story you only thought you knew… We’ll also enjoy lunch on self at The Miracle Mile Delicatessen—a true Phoenix landmark—family owned and operated since 1949. Famous for their towering deli sandwiches, The Miracle Mile also serves three scratch soups made fresh daily, along with fabulous mac & cheese, a roasted turkey plate, baked cod, and so much more! We hope you’ll join us.

Upon arrival, we’ll check into the brand new contemporary styled Holiday Inn Express, conveniently located in English Village, next to the London Bridge. Guests of the hotel are just steps away from restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. glow like enormous holiday ornaments. Later we’ll enjoy a free evening in Lake Havasu City, on a festival weekend, where there will be much to see and do. Day Two: Breakfast is included at the hotel, then we’re off to experience the heart-stopping Mass Ascension—an early morning launch of hundreds of balloons—the most amazing display of sound and color! Afterwards we’ll explore all that this exciting festival has to offer, including tethered balloon rides, an antique & classic car show, arts & crafts show, food vendors booths, live music and so much more. Early afternoon we’ll head for Oatman, one of Arizona’s most interesting ghost towns. This crazy little town began as a mining tent camp over 100 years ago, but quickly became a flourishing gold mining center in 1915, when two miners struck a ten-million-dollar gold find. Mining in Oatman was short lived, but the town survived by catering to travelers on old U.S. Route 66. Oatman nearly died when the route became what is now Interstate 40. Today tame burros roam the streets, descendants of the early mining burros. We’ll check out the Oatman Hotel, where Clark Gable and Carol Lombard honeymooned in 1939, stroll the charming streets and handfeed the burros, before heading back to Havasu for a free evening. Day Three: Breakfast is included at the hotel, then it’s bags out and we’ll head back to the Valley with plenty of great sightseeing along the way. Don’t wait to make your reservations for the 11th Annual Havasu Balloon Festival designated as one of THE TOP 100 EVENTS IN NORTH AMERICA. You’ll be glad you did!

FROM STANDARDS
Oops -
Now what do I do?? So you have received a courtesy letter from the Standards Department, what does that mean? Sun City Grand is a community guided by its Governing Documents, which include the Residential Design Guidelines (RDGs) and the CC&Rs. The Standards Department enforces the RDGs and CC&Rs on a daily basis. The Standards Department does not make policy decisions concerning the RDGs or the CC&Rs. Instead, RDG policies and provisions are recommended by the Architectural Review Committee and approved by the Board of Directors. When you receive a courtesy letter, the Standards Department is asking
you to correct an RDG violation and bring your property into compliance with the RDGs. If you have questions concerning this courtesy letter, please contact the Standards Department, and we will work with you to reach our goal of compliance. With the Standards Department enforcing the Governing Documents, the property values in Sun City Grand are maintained, and more people want to buy into this beautiful community, which helps increase the CARE fund for further projects.
THE STANDARDS DEPARTMENT IS OPEN MONDAY–FRIDAY BETWEEN 8 AM–4 PM IN THE PALM CENTER, AND CAN ALSO BE CONTACTED AT 623-546-7474 OR ARC@SCGCAM.COM.
REPAINTING
YOUR HOUSE There has been some recent confusion and misinformation on social media concerning whether ARC approval is needed before repainting your house. THE ANSWER: You
26
must file an ARC application and receive approval before repainting your house, even if you want to repaint the same color scheme. The Residential Design Guidelines were changed this summer to implement this requirement. Prior to this change, ARC approval was not required for repainting the same color scheme. The change was made because of confusion and mistakes about paint placement and current color schemes. Please call the Standards Department at 623546-7474 if you have questions or need more information. Grand Lifestyles | December 2021 | suncitygrand.com

Meets 1 time on Fri 12/3 9:00 AM–1:00 PM (break from 11- noon) FEE $20
Gian Lorenzo Bernini was the foremost sculptor of his time. Bernini personified Baroque sculpture as Michelangelo personified High Renaissance sculpture. We will see how he captured the ‘Baroque Moment’ in his sculpture. We will discuss what the Baroque style is and how it compares to the High Renaissance style. In addition to being a prolific sculptor, he was a painter and innovative architect. His buildings combined architecture, sculpture, and sometimes natural light. They were known as bel composto [beautiful whole]. We will discuss his life, view many of his works, and discuss some of his masterpieces in detail until we run out of time. You will see how Bernini set the standard for centuries to come.

For more than a century and a half some of the world’s best photographers focused their lenses on Arizona. In addition to the renowned Edward S. Curtis, Kate Cory lived with the Hopi and represented them in photographs and on canvas, while C. S. Fly gave us the famous Geronimo pictures. In the 20th century Josef Muench’s pictures brought the movies to Monument Valley, Dorothea Lange captured Dust Bowl families, Barry Goldwater depicted Navajo and Hopi culture, and Ansel Adams glorified Arizona’s skies, canyons, and mesas. This presentation’s powerful images make the land and its people come alive.

Although the majority of European Jews were murdered during the Holocaust, some did survive and many immigrated to the United States soon after the war's end. I am the son of two of those survivors. As their lives were greatly altered by what each of them experienced, growing up as the son of survivors had a profound impact on my life. I will talk about events in Germany that led up to the Holocaust, the horrors my parents witnessed and end my presentation on how their parenting styles influenced me as I grew to adulthood and who I am now. Questions will be welcomed at any time during my presentation.

Meets 1 time on Thur 12/16 11:00 AM–12:30 PM
FEE $15
In the months and years right after 9/11, poetry flooded the American literary landscape. Original verse came to us nonstop via the Internet, social media and through traditional book publishing avenues. Billy Collins, (Poet Laureate 2001-2003 and distinguished professor at Lehman College/City University of NY) said this resurgence of poetic creativity happened “Because poetry tells the story of the human heart.” Poetry gives us stories we need every day. This program will address examples of modern American poetry including Billy Collins and Joyce Carol Oates with a nod to the influential and highly experimental style of Emily Dickinson.

BOCCE Bocce ball was developed into its present form in Italy, and is now played around the world. It has become very popular in the United States. The game largely depends on throwing skills, but because the balls and the pallino are delivered underhand, it is not as physically taxing as some other sports, such as pickleball. The Sun City Grand bocce club plays on the courts near the Adobe pools, and equipment is stored in the closets near the restrooms. We are currently playing Drop-In bocce on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. and on Wednesday evenings starting at 7 p.m. We’ll show you how to play if you’re new at it. No fees or registration are required. Come out and try it out. The SCG bocce club league play will start in October and November. For more information, contact president@scgbocce.com or our website www.scgbocce.com.

SOUND & LIGHTING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO KEEP THE GRAND’S ENTERTAINMENT “BEST IN CLASS” The Sun City Grand Music Club and Drama and Comedy Club justifiably receive accolades for the many fine musical, dramatic and comedy shows that they bring to our stages each year. But it’s true for any live entertainment venue – the shows are only as good as the sound and lighting teams make them. With the many performances we are planning well into 2022, and the different roles each require, there will be much need for more trained technical people. This is a great way to learn some new skills and become a member of the Grand’s entertainment team. If you have ever wanted to be a part of Live Theater, this is your opportunity. Now that we are returning to a full schedule of performances, the need is even greater for more people to join our lighting and sound teams. ONLINE SAFETY TIPS
Dear Cappie, My current phone is still working okay but a bit sluggish—it doesn’t hold a charge as long as it used to when I first got it. At what point do you think it’s a good idea to buy a new smartphone? Teddy from SCG
Dear Teddy, How do you use your phone? If you mostly use it just for basic tasks like making calls, browsing the web, and sending text messages--a newer, faster phone will not make a huge difference. You did not mention if you have an Android or iPhone, how old your smartphone is, or what condition it is in. Regardless of the operating system, if you answer “yes” to the following questions, you might consider buying a new phone:
Can you no longer download the latest updates to your phone’s operating system? n Will your smartphone no longer run the latest versions of apps you have downloaded? n Is your “touch screen” cracked, losing brightness, not responding as well to your touch? n
A good rule of thumb of when to consider an upgrade is when you no longer can get software updates or if the cost of fixing the device is more than the phone is worth based on its

age and condition. iPhones get security and software updates for five to six years. Android devices get them for about two to three years. Another practical reason to get a new phone is if the cost of fixing broken parts is too high, e.g., severely cracked, or broken touch screen, phone waterlogged and unresponsive, suffered a serious fall, etc. Before deciding to spend your hard-earned cash, if your smartphone is responding too slowly or using up battery life too quickly, try these fixes: n Reset your phone Wi-Fi signal. The easiest way is to turn on airplane mode, wait a few seconds, then turn it off. If your browser is still running slowly after it reconnects, try turning off your Wi-Fi, then reconnecting or using a different Wi-Fi connection. If your connection improves, then the problem was with the Wi-Fi itself and not with your phone. n Get rid of old text messages. They take up an enormous amount of storage. Your phone will run faster, and you’ll have an easier time navigating through your texts. (For an iPhone: Find the conversations you want to remove>Swipe to the left>tap on the trashcan icon>click Delete. Steps for Android phones vary depending on manufacturer and model).
View the digital version of “Ask Cappie” monthly column by going to www.grandinfo.com. Click on the More News>Grand Lifestyles Magazine> to choose the month you want to view. Special thanks to Annie and Bruce Lowe for sharing this lovely photo of Darcy-Dog Lowe, a half Cocker Spaniel, half Blue Meryl Mini Berne-doodle.
Get rid of apps you don’t use because take up storage space and chew up battery life. Before you delete each app, log in to the app and go to the menu page that lets you deactivate or delete your account so your personal information will be deleted as well. n Avoid running several apps at one time as this too will slow down your phone--so close n

them by turning your phone off, then back on, to clear the RAM (random access memory). n Periodically clear your phone’s cache. If you frequently surf the web, it might be filled, which can slow down your phone significantly. If you use Safari, go to Settings>Safari>Clear History and Website Data. For Chrome, open the browser> tap the three dots in the corner>Settings> Privacy>Clear Browsing Data>check Cached Images and Files>Clear Browsing Data. (The cache stores images and other data so it will readily display the next time you visit the website.)
n
Update the operating system and update your apps when notified, to optimize and improve performance. Updates generally result in software running better and using fewer resources.
A more drastic approach is to return your phone’s operating system to its original state, which is called a factory reset. It removes everything from your phone except the operating system. Before you perform a factory reset, perform all the above fixes and then back up your phone so you can re-install “cleaned” apps and data. (For an iPhone: Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. Enter your Apple ID then tap Erase. For
Grand Lifestyles | December 2021 | suncitygrand.com
Android: Settings>Backup & Reset>Factory data reset>Reset phone. Enter your passcode and tap Erase). If the above recommendations fail to speed up your phone and your battery continues to lose its charge before the end of the day, you still have options. n One of the simplest and most affordable solutions is to replace the battery. Batteries have a finite life and manufacturers recommend they be replaced every two to three years. Replacing the battery stretches a device’s lifespan and speeds it up. n Consider buying a newer but used phone from a reliable source.
n
Consider buying a new phone BUT an older model. You don’t have to jump to the latest phone on the market.
If you still decide to buy the latest smartphone with the newest design changes, better camera, brighter screens, more powerful processors, longer battery life, etc., do your homework. Buying a cell phone is a complicated decision. Check out the best options from both the manufacturer, (based on performance, cameras, price, etc.), as well as the latest deals from the phone plan provider (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc.).

SPEEDING I have heard from some of my constituents regarding concerns of speeding and drivers not yielding to people in crosswalks. The City of Surprise has a Street Speed Limit Map where you can easily view the speed limits of our streets. The map can be found online at surpriseaz. gov/1611/Know-the-speed-limit. Speed limits are established based on careful examination of all the factors affecting safe driving in that stretch of roadway.
In residential areas and business districts, the speed limit is 25 mph, in alleys the speed limit is 15 mph and on access streets the speed limit is 35 mph. These speeds may not always be posted, but you are required to know these basic speed laws. Speed limits approaching yellow school crosswalks are 15 mph when the portable signs are placed on the street. When a speed limit sign is not posted, Arizona's Basic Speed Law applies. It requires you to drive at a speed that is reasonable and prudent under existing conditions. In every event, speed must be so controlled as to avoid colliding with any object, person or vehicle on the highway. It is the duty of ALL drivers to exercise reasonable care for the protection of others.
