FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
Driving Range Etiquette Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations
How many times have you gone to a driving range to practice and when you go to hit balls, it is hard to find “nice” turf to hit off of? Often you will probably see divots scattered everywhere and not making it very easy to practice off of quality turf.
Below is a picture of what 30 divots looks like when done differently.
When you hit balls on a range, please be considerate to the turf as well as other golfers. Please keep your divots in patterns to maximize the use of the turf and to allow the damaged turf to heal quickly. Please remember that the practice balls and baskets are to stay at the practice area and are not to be taken to other ranges or saved to hit at a later time. This way everyone can enjoy the use of the practice facilities.

5 HABITS CAN ADD 14 HEALTHY YEARS TO YOUR LIFE, ACCORDING TO SCIENCE This month’s article is taken from Bluezones.com, a website dedicated to educating all on how communities around the world live to accomplish exceptionally long and capable lives. percent full; belong to faith-based communities; always put family first; and have close friends with similar values—we call these the Power 9.
Allison Adams Fitness Manager
Science confirms what we know from our research and study of centenarians in blue zones regions. The longest-lived people in the world share nine commonalities: they move naturally in their daily lives; eat a plant-slant diet, go to happy hour and drink Wine at 5; they wake up in the morning with purpose; find ways to down shift and shed stress; eat to 80
According to new research published in the American Heart Association’s journal Circulation, five very similar lifestyle habits have been shown to increase life expectancy at age 50 by 12 to 14 years. The study is the first comprehensive analysis of the impact of adopting low-risk lifestyle factors on life expectancy in the U.S. Researchers at Harvard T.H. Along with lifestyle and medical data from adults in the Nurses’ Health Study, the Health Professionals Followup Study, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), as well as mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), researchers determined that in the more than 30 years of follow-up, following all five lifestyle habits improved projected life expectancy at age 50 by 14.0 years for women and 12.2 years for men. “This study underscores the importance of following
healthy lifestyle habits for improving longevity in the U.S. population,” said Frank Hu, chair of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard Chan School and senior author of the study. “However, adherence to healthy lifestyle habits is very low. Therefore, public policies should put more emphasis on creating healthy food, built, and social environments to support and promote healthy diet and lifestyles.” In Blue Zones Project communities, our team of experts works with local municipalities to make the healthy choice the easy and unavoidable choice by transforming the built environment and creating food policies that ensure that health isn’t necessarily pursued by citizens, but rather it ensues from the right environment.

ELECTION 2022 Thank You
AND SOME THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW! Congratulations to the 4 candidates who were selected in this year’s election, and a thank you to those who didn’t win but wanted to serve our community. Bob Aiken received 3184 votes, Rene Mitchell 2864 votes, Tony Spata 2404 votes, Alan Meyer 2198 votes, Robert Chilmonik 1844 votes, Mitch Friedlander 1777 votes, and Ira Simmons 1394 votes.
T
his year’s vote total, 4307 votes, is the second highest total since 2017 with 44.0% of the residents voting. The neighborhoods of Lago Vista, Cimarron, and Escalante had the highest vote totals. Clearly their neighborhood reps deserve credit for getting out the vote– so thank you to all three of them! Most of you cast your votes electronically 4080 of you (94.7%). There were 167 paper ballots and 60 telephone votes, so all 3 methods of voting that we provided were used. Unfortunately, some on Next-Door were misinformed when it was reported that you could only vote electronically
16
or that you had to leave your house to vote. And of the 9800 voter letters that were mailed out in those window envelopes with Important Board Election Information stamped across the front in red, only 74 were returned as undeliverable. Many of you sent in new email addresses or new home addresses in the comment section of your ballot. Unfortunately, those changes will have to be done with the Membership Office, as our voting partner, Vote-Now, has no way of making those changes. Updating your email address and/or the address where you want your mail sent is the best way to make certain for next year that your voter letter with your unique voter code is delivered in a timely manner and
you receive an email that immediately directs you to the ballot link. Thank you for the kudos that we received in putting the candidate’s statements on the ballot with a link so that you could review them prior to casting your vote. Though we provide the candidates with suggestions for their statements, they can, of course, write whatever they wish and we neither edit their statements nor verbally suggest changes. We did make a note, however, that many of you contacted us to tell us that you wanted the candidates email addresses so we will include your suggestion in next year’s briefing. This election was challenging in many regards; for the election team, the

candidates, and you, the residents. We have never, in year’s past, had to cancel a planned event, but over the past two years we have become more accustomed to sudden changes to our routines. Not everyone followed the rules, misinformation was spread on social media and at the Q and A, all were disappointed that they didn’t have more time with the candidates, some sent emails saying that the Vote-Now system of voting is corrupt, and one resident flatly stated that we were engaging in voter suppression. And yet, you voted in record numbers, we have a Board ready to lead us through the exciting opportunities that lie ahead, and Sun City Grand remains a community where people consistently step up to volunteer their time and talent to make us a remarkable place to live. If you voted, pat yourself on the back for being a participant in the governance of Sun City Grand. If you didn’t, for whatever reason, we hope you will next time around. The Grand Election Team wishes to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of the Communications Department; Adam Nunez, who had headed the team, along with Angelica Bland and Cassaundra Navarro. Without their work you never would have seen so many News of the Day articles, never been able to see the Q & A recorded, never would have seen such an amazing stage set-up, nor the
banners that were up, and the candidate information on the website. We had the largest crowd ever at this year’s Q & A. We expected 100 and more than 250 showed up. So, a big thank you to the maintenance workers who not only did the original setup but also carried and dragged all of those extra chairs into Sonoran. Thank you to Marc Billings and his crew who did a delicious breakfast for our meet the board function for potential board candidates, and Lorena Nieto and her group for providing the beautiful centerpieces. Our team does not function without the tireless work of our Cam liaison, Theresa Fleck. New to both Cam and the Election Team, she caught on quickly and made our job so much easier.
entire election process. And last but not least, I want to thank the members of this community who took the time to send positive comments about the ease of the voting process and thank us for running the election in such a professional manner. You make what we do worthwhile! Joan Bean Facilitator Grand Election Team
I personally want to give a shout out to our voting partner, Vote-Now, and specifically, James Claiborn, who consistently provides us with a secure, accurate, and seamless voting system. I must also thank the women in the Membership Office who helped those of you who needed a paper ballot or didn’t have their unique code. A tremendous thank you, of course, must go to the Election team itself, Adrienne Kirschner, Annie Gregory, Barbara Minick, Suzanne McFadden, and the interim General Manager, Rod Rankin, under whose authority we function. BASEBALL AND GARAGE DOORS
Submitted by:
Dennis Hanscom C.H.A.P.S. Member
The citizens of Grand have become accustomed to seeing the little white cars (and sometimes a pickup truck) with the yellow magnetic signs on the doors. Those are the vehicles driven by our C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers while cruising through our neighborhoods. In the mornings they are checking for unlocked doors and windows of our neighbors
homes while they are away on vacation. To the C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers this is known as Vacation Watch.
Those same vehicles are also out patrolling at night looking for open garage doors, and unlit street lights while keeping an open eye for any suspicious activity. This segment of C.H.A.P.S.* is referred to as Evening Patrol. C.H.A.P.S.* also has a group that directs vendors to their designated spaces at the Spring and Fall garage sales. These hearty individuals serve from 3:30 a.m. until 7 a.m. on those days. Hey folks, it’s Spring Training time…well maybe! At copy deadline time this writer is still very optimistic. I will be
able to view my Mariners… or Diamondbacks from my favorite second level seat as they play the Royals or Rangers. We are so fortunate to be able to enjoy the best stadium of all the spring training game sites. At least in my opinion, I say it is the best for two reasons: it offers the most shade and FREE parking. Not to mention two teams in Texas and Kansas City that are always in the mix at playoff time. C.H.A.P.S.* has approximately 150 volunteers. A large contingent of our C.H.A.P.S.* members also serve as Sundancers. Sundancers was founded in 2002 and made up of approximately 750 members. The Sundancers serve as the official volunteer group at Surprise Stadium. They handle
parking of cars, ushering and other stadium duties. So…the next time your doorbell rings in the evening to alert you of your garage door being open you may see the same friendly face that helped you find your seats at Surprise Stadium. TO VOLUNTEER We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call Danielle Amato (CAM) 623546-7539 or the C.H.A.P.S.* office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! Our next meeting is March 22 at Cimarron at 1:30 p.m. You are most welcome to join us to learn more about C.H.A.P.S.* DONATIONS C.H.A.P.S.* welcomes all donations. Those wishing to make donations may do so at the Membership Office. Make checks payable to Sun City Grand Community Association and designate “Donation to C.H.A.P.S.”

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE
The Colonnade Scholarship Program Benefits Team Members at The Colonnade There are more than 110 employees, or team members, as we call them, working at The Colonnade. These team members range in age from those still attending high school to those with much more life experience. One of the benefits of working at The Colonnade, is The Colonnade Scholarship Program, a resident-run program that benefits team members who are pursuing educational and training programs for personal and professional growth. The financial assistance offered by this program has greatly eased the financial burden associated with educational pursuits. In fact, for some team members, it has meant the difference between forgoing their educational goals and achieving those goals. Clearly, the financial incentive offered by the Scholarship Fund has been helpful in both attracting and retaining our team members, which has benefitted the community greatly overall. Over the past three years, 57 scholarships have been awarded, totally more than $83,000. Over the last two years, COVID has reduced the number of applications. There were 14 scholarships awarded in 2021, compared to 22 in 2019. Nonetheless, the usefulness of the scholarship program makes it very important, and something that residents continue to fund. The scholarship fund is supported by resident donations, as well as two generous estate gifts, one of which will continue in perpetuity. Donations go directly to The Colonnade's special account in the Sun Health Foundation, and the Foundation, in turn, tracks and acknowledges them.
Sun Health Foundation then pays the scholarship awards after the submitted applications have been approved by The Colonnade Scholarship Committee. Committee members have knowledge of the total funds in the account but do not know the names of contributors. Based on the size of the account, the Committee makes upward or downward adjustments in the maximum permissible annual award with the aim of providing as much assistance as possible without depleting the funds. Over the past three years, the maximum award dollars per recipient in a 12-month period increased from $1,800 to $2.000, and then to $4,000. The Colonnade Scholarship Committee includes Judith Bridges, Secretary; Dwain Ehrlich, Janet Rehman, Darlene Bradner, Co-Chair; Barbara Hesskamp, Co-Chair; Jerry Goode; Duane Thompson; loni Williamson; Karen Mayfield and Robin Mandell. The Colonnade is a nonprofit Sun Health Life Plan community. It’s part of Sun City Grand and has more than 320 residents in Independent Living. The campus also offers Assisted Living and Memory Support services, which are open to the public. While life has changed over the last two years, our commitment to health and safety hasn’t wavered. We’ve successfully implemented stringent protocols in response to COVID-19 and continue to work with residents and team members to ensure a thriving, healthy lifestyle for all. With your safety in mind, our communities are open and ready to help you start planning for the future. For up-to-date information about the campus, visit SunHealthCommunities.org or call (623) 236-3770.

WRITTEN BY PAUL SLADE SMITH GUYS AND DOLLS—A MUSICAL FABLE OF BROADWAY Ned Newley doesn’t even want to be Governor. He’s terrified of public speaking; his poll numbers are impressively bad. To his ever-supportive Chief of Staff, Ned seems destined to fail. But a political consultant sees things differently – Ned might be the worst candidate to ever run for office. Unless the public is looking for just that… the worst candidate to ever run for office. Adding to this satire are a professional pollster whose view of politics is a series of contests to be won; the Governor’s executive assistant who has the air of a politician about her; and a TV reporter and cameraman who round out this interesting cast. A timely and hilarious comedy that skewers politics and celebrates democracy. $20/pp | Five Shows: Thursday & Friday | 6:00pm Cash Bar 7pm Performance| Sonoran Plaza Main Stage Saturday | 12:30pm & 6pm Cash Bar 1:30pm & 7pm Performance | Sonoran Plaza Main Stage Sunday | 2pm Cash Bar | 3pm Performance Sonoran Plaza Main Stage

HERE IS A TYPICAL DAILY EVENT

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
There are some occasional social activities when members meet to vote on new officers OR just meet for club sponsored soda and hot dogs.
VOLUNTEERS
Member volunteers run the club’s daily putting activities such as setting up the course, registering members and guests, etc. The Men Putters is a new club, started several years ago, and membership has continued to grow with each new season.
Membership, pictures and lots of other information can be found on our website: www.scgmenputters.weebly.com. Or, you can simply stop by the Cimarron green to meet us and just ask about joining.

Deliver mail across the western United States in both directions, twenty-eight hundred miles each way, every twenty-five days, 365 days a year per the Postmaster General. Cross major deserts with little to no water and scant vegetation for construction, deal with robbers and Indians, withstand 100-plus degree temperatures in the summer and cross mountain passes in the winter, all with the absence of discernable roads, only trails and virtually no towns or village in-between. We will review the efforts, accomplishments and the fabulous story of John Butterfield, Sr., and his Overland Mail Trail.
JOHN WAYNE KEN SORENSEN
Meets 1 time on Wed 3/30 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

He became known for standing up for oneself and being able

The subject matter is different from Chemistry and Biology. It includes mechanics, heat, light, and other forms of radiation. Also electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms. Showcase of Toys Contributed by: Andy Tofil SCG Resident

The Grand Woodcrafters Club held it’s annual “Showcase of Toys” on December 2nd this year between 7-9 PM at Cimarron Center. We had excellent attendance for our show. This event could also be called the “Presentation of Toys” as over 22 toymakers presented what they had made during the year.
T
his year’s mission was to help fill the void for children who suffered through Covid. There were many new and intricate toys made, and of course, some of our traditional favorites. 1055 toys were produced this year. The next day, the toys were all delivered to six charities:

We host the “Showcase of Toys” to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our toymakers. They meet at the woodshop Thursday nights between 6-8, many of them year-round. Quite a few toy makers contribute their own money into building toys, some producing them at home. Also, we host this event to recognize the talents of our other Sun City Grand Clubs who participate in this effort. They include the Art Club who paint individual designs on many of the toys, Community Service of the Stitchers Club who make clothes, bedding and other items, and the Beaders who make bracelets that are placed in every jewelry box. This year we also had involvement from the Paper Arts & Memories Club who made hundreds of generic Christmas cards for the kids. Finally, we want to show our residents the ways that Sun City Grand gives back to our greater community. Our Toy Project operates on a donation basis only! If you would like to contribute, please stop by the woodshop and drop your contribution off in our donation box, located near the front door. 100% of your contributions go to the Toy Project! Thank you!!!

WEEDS—FRIENDLY REMINDER FROM STANDARDS We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO KEEP THE GRAND’S ENTERTAINMENT “BEST IN CLASS”
The Sun City Grand Music Club and Drama and Comedy Club justifiably receive accolades for the many fine musical, dramatic and comedy shows that they bring to our stages each year. But it’s true for any live entertainment venue – the shows are only as good as the sound and lighting teams make them. We are currently looking for residents who want to practice their existing skills or learn new ones for the upcoming season starting in the Fall 2021. And the best part is absolutely no prior experience or knowledge is required. We will train anyone who is interested in learning the lighting and sound systems. With the many performances we are planning well into 2022, and the different roles each require, there will be much need for more trained technical people. This is a great way to learn some new skills and become a member of the Grand’s entertainment team.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT
FAKE WEBSITES—BEWARE! Dear Cappie, I have heard awful things can occur if you go to a website that is fake. How can I be sure the website I visit is legitimate? Tony Dear Tony, It is not easy to tell real from fake in anything these days, and with more than 18,000 fraudulent websites created each day (according to Help Net Security), your question is an excellent one. First, when you yourself open a web browser or use a search engine to find a website, be sure to spell the website name correctly. Many scammers create websites with names that look similar to popular named websites, but they are either slightly misspelled or have a different domain name; e.g., the address uses .com or .org instead of .net. Once you are on a website, to be sure it is legit, double check the spelling of domain name and then then look for a padlock to the left of the URL in the address bar. That padlock indicates it is a secure site and encrypts (secures) data that is sent between the website and your device. If there is an “!” (exclamation mark), it is not certified, so any data you send is at risk of being intercepted. Hover over the padlock with your mouse, click it and then click on “Connection is Secure” from the menu that comes up. More details about the valid certificate will appear as who the certificate was issued to, who it was issued by, and the expiration date, and more. While this is not one56
hundred-percent risk free, it is a very good indicator that you are visiting a legitimate site. Another way to be more mindful of fake websites is to never click on an embedded weblink in an email even if it comes from a trusted source. Instead, go to your browser and type in the link there. Once on the site, click on the padlock and go through the above stated steps. The browser will have detailed information on the website’s authenticity so click on the padlock, carefully read the site information especially if it asks you to enter your own information on the site (like credit or debit card information, passwords, email addresses, etc.). In addition, you can use a site scanner application before going to a website. These apps “crawl the web” (visit websites and test the sites for malicious content such as malware, spam, etc.) that could bring dangerous content to your computer or other devices. The site scanner notifies you before entering the site of potential threats. Most will then ask if you still want to proceed to visit the site. There are free and for-pay sitescanner applications on the market rated by internet sites that deal with technology and security applications (CNET. com, Digitaltrends.com, Gizmodo.com, PCWorld.com,
TechCrunch.com, Techradar. com, Thenextweb.com, Tomsguide.com, Wired.com, ZDNet.com, etc.). Also be aware that cybercriminals are now exploiting QR codes (short for “quick response”). One example, recently found in several states, were stickers with QR codes overlayed on parking meters, and unsuspecting motorists were led to believe they could pay the parking fees online. Using their smartphones, they scanned the link to the malicious site, which in turn, collected their credit card information. Be wary of codes posted in public areas and examine the code to see if it fits with the background. Restaurant menus given by the server, advertisements in store windows, etc. make sense, but QR codes in an email may not. If you are already on the web with your PC or laptop, why use a second device to get to a website? Therefore, be extremely careful before scanning a QR code in emails, text messages, and paper junk mail. If you do scan a QR code, know that smartphones will preview the code’s URL while scanning. If it looks questionable, stop the scan. If you continue and enter the site, before entering any personal data, check if the site looks legitimate. You can also use a reputable secure scanner app, which is designed to spot malicious links before your phone opens them. For

a list of various scanner apps, check your favorite tech site for recommendations. Finally, use a password manager. If a link or QR code takes you to a fake website (that might look convincingly like the real thing), a password manager knows the difference between a real website and a fake website and will not autofill your personal data and passwords. The bottom line is to use common sense: do not click on links that are unfamiliar.

Is the pandemic stopping you from getting the support you need?
The Colonnade offers move-in ready assisted living and memory support for everyone.
It might be the best-kept secret in the Northwest Valley, and we want to share it with you! The Colonnade’s Assisted Living and Memory Support services on our 40-acre, secure gated Life Plan community in the heart of the Sun City Grand is available to everyone, not just our own residents.
