FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

A MESSAGE FROM OUR GENERAL MANAGER, DAVID TWIGGS 2021 is moving forward as we enter the Fall season and welcome back many of the residents who left during the summer months. With 2022 around the corner, the Association anticipates completing several community enhancement projects that will provide increased opportunities for socialization and engagement, among many other advantages that aim to improve the quality of life. Village Center Enhancement Project: W. David Twiggs General Manager

The Village Center Enhancement Project is about community outside of a physical building by offering more flexibility for ongoing programming and socialization while addressing safety concerns, including walkable space and lighting. With construction underway, sections of the Village Center will be blocked off and restricted to hard-hat workers only. In a few months, when the project is completed, the community will do what it does best and celebrate together. Internal System and Website Enhancement Project: Since the start of the year, we have made progress on our internal systems by condensing multiple software programs into one central platform. The migration not only will improve our Association department processes but will provide a better service to our residents by creating easier access to things like updating your contact information, purchasing event tickets, and reserving time for a lap lane through a new website. We will release additional website updates and our first mobile app following the website launch to continue our efforts to eliminate our third-party websites and create one login for everything you will need. Branding Study: From the initial development of Sun City Grand in the 1990s, our brand has remained relatively the same with a few minor tweaks, which has led others to define our identity and not us. Over the summer, several focus groups and a community survey were conducted to begin the data collection that would assist in creating a new brand. The data analysis and presentation of its findings will go through our standard BOD process for approval and adoption. Integrating the new brand will position the community with a clear message for residents and future marketing efforts. These are only a few enhancement projects underway, and others like the Falls Restaurant will be completed in the following year. Throughout the process, I will be updating through several communication channels that I encourage you to join and follow along as we move forward.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER

all about being

FLEXIBLE This month, we’re going to take a look at flexibility. Flexibility can be defined as the range of pain-free motion around a joint. long and healthy, and able to respond more efficiently to sudden movements, which in turn improves fall prevention, and other possible injuries.

Allison Adams Fitness Manager

O

ur flexibility is determined by the tendons, ligaments, skin, and muscles that surround the joint. Genetics can also contribute to our range of motion. You may know someone who is hyperflexible, sometimes referred to as “double-jointed”. Although the aging process does influence the decline in flexibility, many factors play a role in joint stiffness including inactivity, injury, and lack of stretching. Active exercisers who don’t stretch, as well as those who are more sedentary can experience similar muscle and joint tightness. Loss of muscle mass and thinning of cartilage is a regular part of getting older, making flexibility more of a challenge. A regular stretching program is important to keep our muscles 14

What should we do to get started if stretching hasn’t been a regular fitness protocol? See your doctor to get guidance that addresses any physical limitations you might have. You may be directed to see a physical therapist before embarking on a regular exercise and stretching program. If physical limitations are not a concern, start your exercise program by warming up the body with dynamic stretching, actions that take joints through a full range of motion; often mimicking the motions of large muscle group exercises. Static stretching, holding a stretch for 30-60 seconds is best done after your workout and the body is thoroughly warmed up. As we get older, improvements in flexibility may take several sessions before results are observed. Some benefits of improved flexibility are: reduced risk of injury, improved joint range of motion, reduction in back pain,

improved balance and posture, and increased physical and mental relaxation. Sun City Grand offers many classes that help improve flexibility. We have several yoga classes; Intro to Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Chair Yoga, Yoga, along with Stretch &

Relax. All of our group fitness classes, by nature of increasing your heartrate and movement, will also improve flexibility. We also recommend meeting with a personal trainer who can address your more specific stretching needs in a one-onone environment or through small group training.

What Sets Sun City Grand Apart? IN A WORD ... VOLUNTEERISM

Our Sun City Grand community is like a small city. 17,000 community members, a $22 million-dollar annual budget, hundreds of acres filled with amenities. One of the many things that makes us different from other communities is the way in which we’re governed and how major decisions are made. Many other large active adult communities are run by third-party management firms that often focus on dues collection, financial oversight, record keeping and vendor management. We believe that there are significant advantages to having our community led by the talented individuals who make their home here. Sun City Grand is governed by seven elected community members who comprise our Board of Directors, along with their many appointed committees. Each of our Board members is a resident homeowner, and they work together on behalf of all community members for the greater good, setting policy and providing executive leadership and strategic governance. They oversee the community's short- and long-term goals, including major projects and infrastructure improvements, such as community enhancements, land use, and finances and strategic planning. Hundreds of volunteer Committee members support these efforts and work to maintain and continually improve the beautiful community we call home. Day-to-day operations are carried out by our Community Association Management (CAM) team of experienced professionals, headed by our General Manager, who in turn reports to the Board of Directors. Thank You

to Monica Rodriguez—Upon Her Retirement September 30, 2021 What comes to mind when you hear or see the word HELPER? Collaborator? Ally? Backer? Colleague? Friend? Helpmate? Partner? Assistant? Supporter? Fellow worker? Right-hand person?

For those of us on C.H.A.P.S. Monica was the ‘go-to’ person who would answer our questions, help problem solve and seek out the solution. As our assistant, partner and liaison to the Community Association Management staff, she worked with C.H.A.P.S, to schedule meetings, room reservations, assist with Grand Lifestyles magazine article submissions and prepare minutes for C.H.A.P.S. board and general meetings.

WHO do you think of when you hear the word HELPER? For those of us in C.H.A.P.S., who have had the good fortune to work with her, the person we think of is Monica Rodriguez, our advocate and always an ally and FOC (Friend of C.H.A.P.S.). For the past 10+ years in various roles and job titles Monica was our Community Association Management (CAM) liaison to C.H.A.P.S., our biggest supporter and voice for our service organization. Some of you may only know her from recent interactions as Mr. Twiggs Executive Administrative Assistant. Maybe you had the good fortune to work and collaborate with her on projects when she was in Accounting or Human Resources here in Sun City Grand. If you are a long-time customer of Del Webb/Pulte Homes you may have even been fortunate to run into Monica when she worked at the construction offices on Mountain View while Sun City Grand was being built. Monica worked for Del Webb/ Pulte for more than 32 years, on site, during the build out of Sun City, Sun City West and Sun City Grand. One of the perks of

Monica and Jack Kingsbury, C.H.A.P.S. Chair the job was to be one of the first players on the golf courses. Her customer service expertise, product knowledge and positive attitude has made her a fellow worker, that someone, that everyone wants to work with and be around. Monica has enjoyed her support roles for Block Watch, C.H.A.P.S., Neighborhood Representatives, Board Committees and other SCG service groups. At every opportunity she was the right-hand person for that group and backer.

When we asked Monica what she will remember about her time as our C.H.A.P.S. helpmate she said that she enjoyed hearing of our adventures and resident encounters during Night Patrol service. Monica was also impressed with the organization, classroom and field training and the commitment to service of our volunteers. It still amazes her that our volunteers would arrive at 4:00AM to provide traffic control for our semiannual Garage Sale events. Monica will remember C.H.A.P.S. as a group of “top-notch” volunteers who took pride and care in their service to Grand residents…and we in C.H.A.P.S. say “back at you” Monica, Helper, you certainly set the standard! Congratulations on your well-earned and well-deserved retirement!

*C.H.A.P.S.: Community Homeowner Association Patrol Service C.H.A.P.S. MEETS THE 4TH TUESDAY EVERY MONTH (except December) AT 1:30 P.M. IN THE SONORAN PLAZA. EVERYONE IS WELCOME. MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH C.H.A.P.S. 18

FARCE OF NATURE— A JONES, HOPE, WOOTEN COMEDY

The Drama & Comedy Club season opens with Farce of Nature, written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, Jamie Wooten. Originally scheduled for December 2020, then rescheduled for March 2021 (thank you COVID-19), Farce of Nature will now be proudly performed in October on the Sonoran Plaza Main Stage. The non-stop hilarity of this Southern-fried farce highlights one day in the life of

an Arkansas family, who own the “Reel ’Em Inn,” the finest little fishing lodge in the Ozarks. Well, it used to be, but lately business is down, tourists are few, except for one lone guest. A deliciously funny romp ensues, but by the chaotic end of this one outrageous day, love blossoms, truths are revealed and lives change in incredible and surprising ways. $15/pp | Six Shows: Thursday 7pm; Friday & Saturday 1:30 & 7 p.m.; Sunday 3 p.m. Cash Bar –1 hour before matinee & evening performances | Sonoran Plaza Main Stage OCTOBER 26 • TUESDAY • GRAND TRIP

CHICAGO THE MUSICAL AT AZ BROADWAY THEATRE

As the longest-running American musical and a winner of six 1997 Tony Awards®, Chicago The Musical, a universal tale filled with greed, corruption, and one show-stopping hit after another. Set amidst the decade of the roaring twenties, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and wannabe nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media, and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, and hires the slickest criminal lawyer in town to transform her crime into a barrage of sensational headlines. 7th Annual ‘Stand Up to Falling Down’ VIRTUAL EVENT

Although the weather may not be that different from last month, September 22 was the first day of fall. It was also National Falls Prevention Awareness Day, and the day Sun Health and The Colonnade hosted the 7th Annual Stand Up To Falling Down event. This year’s event provided the community with information and education to help prevent participants from being part of the 3 million older adults who require treatment in an emergency room as the result of a fall injury.

since 2017. She took time to briefly visit with the presenters afterward to thank them for the information they shared.

Sun Health Wellness and The Colonnade campus had planned to offer the event as both an online and in-person presentation. However, as COVID-19 numbers began to rise in Maricopa County in August and September, the event became fully virtual for everyone’s safety.

“The Stand Up to Falling Down program was absolutely great, and I really learned a lot from Laura’s presentation,” she said. “I also take advantage of quite a few of the Life Enrichment programs and will make sure to work with our physical fitness

More than 120 people logged into the Zoom broadcast featuring Banner physical therapist, Laura Goedhart’s presentation “The Relationship Between Your Body and Falls; and Banner clinical ambulatory pharmacist Matthew Gotfryd’s presentation about “Medications and Falls: What is the Connection?” Alex Stark, M.S., Sun Health wellness specialist, hosted the event and is currently in the process of creating an online version of the program that will soon be available on Sun Health’s LiveWell Learning online platform. Among the many people who tuned in to watch the presentation was Chickie Smith, a resident of The Colonnade 34

Chickie stated one of the most important things she learned was that need to strengthen her legs, despite being an avid walker.

team to improve my leg strength and stay on-track with my exercises.” This program is just part of the many opportunities residents of The Colonnade have to stay healthy, which include oncampus physical fitness classes that are part of the Sun Health Communities Life Enrichment Program based on Masterpiece Living’s holistic approach to successful aging. The event coincided with the National Council on Aging’s Falls Prevention Awareness

Week, and is especially timely as falls are becoming more common with people spending more time at home. More than a third of people between ages 50 and 80 have reported that their physical activity has declined since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the University of Michigan, which can lead to increase the risk of falls. As we begin to again see an increase in COVID-19 cases and the need to spend more time at home, the issue of at-home falls persists. Residents of The Colonnade as well as those who live in Sun City Grand are able to take advantage of the many programs and services available through Sun Health Wellness. For more information about everything Sun Health offers to keep the community healthy, visit SunHealth.org and click on the blue “THRIVE” banner. The Colonnade, a nonprofit Sun Health Life Plan community is part of Sun City Grand, and has more than 320 residents in Independent Living. The campus also offers Assisted Living and Memory Support services open to the public. For up-to-date information about the campus, including what we are doing to keep everyone healthy and safe during the ongoing pandemic, visit SunHealthCommunities. org or call (623) 236-3770.

THE BASICS OF MIXING LIVE SOUND LARRY DIRKSEN

Meets 4 times on Mon/Fri 10/4, 10/8, 10/11, 10/18 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM FEE $10

Sound Engineers work in theaters, concert halls and sporting arenas, radio, TV and recording studios, meeting rooms, houses of worship, hotels, casinos and night clubs, and many more places. They capture, manipulate and transmit voices, music and other sounds to audiences small and large, both nearby and far away. This course will focus on the five most important aspects of mixing live sound for theater and concert applications. Participants should be comfortable with the basic operation of typical sound systems including choosing sound sources and deploying microphones, mixers, amplifiers and speakers. Gain setting strategy, gating, equalization, compression and effects will all get detailed attention. We will include some theory but most of the course will place heavy emphasis on “hands on” learning. At the conclusion of the course, participants can expect to have a good understanding of how audio engineers go about shaping sound for directors and audiences. For those interested in putting this knowledge to work, there will be an opportunity to join the sound team for a production with the Music Club or the Drama and Comedy Club.

SEA WATER DESALINATION JEFF GIBBS

Meets 4 times on Thur 10/14—11/4 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM FEE $30

The year 2021 has been a year of considerable concern with regard to the adequacy of our water supplies – both in Sun City Grand and in Arizona as a whole. Yet most of the focus has been on how to get us thru just the next 3-5 years without severe water restrictions. There has been little focus to date regarding the need for the long-term, structural changes which will be needed to ensure water sustainability for our community in the next decade and beyond. One of the solutions which has been suggested is the creation of large-scale infrastructure to desalinate ocean sea water for use in supporting our life here in the desert. This course will enable Sun City Grand members and other interested parties to understand how this solution might assist us in achieving long-term sustainable water supplies: Session I - Water Sustainability and The Colorado River Basin - This session will provide an overview of the current water issues in the Colorado River Basin and the Valley of the Sun in Arizona. Session II - This session will explore the various solutions which have been proposed to ensure our long-term water future, focusing on the possibility of sea water desalination. Session III - This session will provide an overview of how other countries and other states have deployed this solution as a part of their portfolio of water supply options. Session IV – The final session will take a look at activities to date to consider this solution here in Arizona along with suggesting some of the challenges which would need to be overcome for its widespread implementation.

When the US Army ordered troops into Arizona Territory in the 19th century to protect and defend newly established settlements, military men often brought their wives and families, particularly officers who might be stationed in the west for years. Most of the women were from refined, eastern-bred families with little knowledge of the territory. Their letters, diaries, and journals from their years on army posts reveal untold hardships and challenges. They learned to cope with the sparseness, the heat, sickness, and danger, including wildlife they never imagined. These women were bold, brave, and compassionate. They became an integral part of military posts that peppered the West and played an important role in civilizing the untamed frontier. Combined with research tracing their movements from post to post, their personal stories personify the tragedies and triumphs many early military wives endured.

In addition to being a prolific sculptor, he was a painter and innovative architect. His buildings combined architecture, sculpture, and sometimes natural light. They were known as bel composto [beautiful whole]. We will discuss his life, view many of his works, and discuss some of his masterpieces in detail until we run out of time. You will see how Bernini set the standard for centuries to come.

A wagon train of over eighty-five settlers leaving Missouri in 1850, bound for the promised land of Bashan (California), is reduced to a single family crossing the Sonoran Desert of western Arizona. The ensuing massacre of the family, abduction of two of the daughters and the eventual release of Olive, created a newspaper sensation throughout the U.S. followed by books, magazines and lecture tours. Men Putters Club HAVE ANY INTEREST IN PUTTING?

Want to meet others that share this interest? If so, then plan to come over to the beautiful 18-hole putting green located just west of the Cimarron club house, right off of W. Clearview Blvd. You are invited to play a “guest” round with one of a Men Putters club member.

PUTTING SCHEDULE

The Men Putters do “their thing” weekly on Tuesday and Wednesday, at 1:00 PM, both days, starting in November. (In the summer, we go to an early morning start time in order to beat the heat.) Members feel free to pick whatever day they prefer to participate and some even putt both days.

HERE IS A TYPICAL DAILY EVENT

Register to play, be paired with another person, putt 18 holes, and lastly, participate in a 19th hole challenge (this is a special one-hole challenge). Other change-of-pace fun putting challenges are offered throughout the year long program.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

There are some occasional social activities when members meet to vote on new officers OR just meet for club sponsored soda and hot dogs.

VOLUNTEERS

Member volunteers run the club’s daily putting activities such as setting up the course, registering members and guests, etc. The Men Putters is a new club, started several years ago, and membership has continued to grow with each new season.

Stop by the Cimarron green to meet us and just ask about joining.

SOUND & LIGHTING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO KEEP THE GRAND’S ENTERTAINMENT “BEST IN CLASS”

The Sun City Grand Music Club and Drama and Comedy Club justifiably receive accolades for the many fine musical, dramatic and comedy shows that they bring to our stages each year. But it’s true for any live entertainment venue – the shows are only as good as the sound and lighting teams make them. We are currently looking for residents who want to practice their existing skills or learn new ones for the upcoming season starting in the Fall 2021. And the best part is absolutely no prior experience or knowledge is required. We will train anyone who is interested in learning the lighting and sound systems. With the many performances we are planning well into 2022, and the different roles each require, there will be much need for more trained technical people. This is a great way to learn some new skills and become a member of the Grand’s entertainment team. If you have ever wanted to be a part of Live Theater, this is your opportunity. Now that we are returning to a full schedule of performances, the need is even greater for more people to join our lighting and sound teams. For more information, contact Larry Dirksen – 623-363-5040 (Sound); or Bob Nix – 623-2148280 (Lighting)
