FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

W. David Twiggs General Manager

I want to thank our residents for their cooperation in adhering to the new covid related procedures that have had to be enacted in order to open our amenities for member use. We have seen very good compliance from our members as they are using those facilities we have been allowed to open. For the most part our restriction come from the Arizona required mandates for re-opening. All of Executive orders and the processes they put in place for applications from must be reviewed to see how they impact and apply to all of our many various activities. These government policies have been somewhat fluid and vague as the are rolled out, but your staff is continually following these requirements and getting our applications to open in as soon as feasible. I also want to thank the staff for their diligent work on these issues and for their constant goal of keeping Sun City Grand as safe as possible during these trying times. I assure you that we will continue our efforts to open our amenities as safely and quickly as possible. I have enjoyed seeing residents enjoying themselves as their preferred activities become available. Continuing to do the things we love is very important even when those have to be adjusted with social distancing, zoom meetings, or wearing masks. At the core Sun City Grand is a festive active place to live and that will carry on regardless of the challenges we face.

Thank you, David W. David Twiggs

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER

Hello Sun City Grand Members We are prepared to re-open when our Governor grants permission to do so.

Allison Adams Fitness Manager

Raise your hand if you are tired of the restrictions in your life due to the pandemic. I can say with confidence that the last several months have forced our team to pause and redirect our ideas about planning for the fitness department this summer an onward. Without a precedent on how to operate during a pandemic, SCG Fitness is paying close attention to recommendations from the CDC, our state Health Department, and national leaders in the fitness community. We have in place, protocols which meet the suggestions by the CDC, and the requirements outlined by the AZ Dept. of Health and the Sun City Grand Board of Directors.

With constant media attention on the issue of COVID-19, volumes of information have already been shared on how to maintain your safety. Our focus is to provide opportunities for you to treat your health and wellbeing now, regardless of whether our fitness facilities are open or not. Making healthy lifestyle choices is one of the ways to maintain your safety. It’s no surprise that exercise is a great tool to boost the immune system. We hope you are taking measures to keep your body moving, not only for the physical advantages, but the mental value as well. The isolation many of us are experiencing is one facet that takes a toll on us physically and mentally. It’s easier to slide into a more sedentary way of life since our ability to move about has become more of a challenge. We want to help with that. Back to the concept of the effects on physical and

mental health with regard to isolation. In our attempts to fend off a serious virus, we are putting other aspects of our health at risk. Clothing manufacturers are selling inventory in higher size ranges since March 2020. Revenue for the sale of processed foods have gone up. Reports on “quarantine fatigue” have shown increases in anxiety, emotional distress and depression. An increase for counseling services and psychiatric medication have risen. The benefits of social interaction and physical movement should be prioritized to offset the results of our current way of life. Let’s remember that exercise benefits brain health as it does the physical being. In addition to body benefits, blood flow increases the vasculature of the brain to help reduce the risk of dementia. This improved blood flow also improves neural activity, which helps in better motor control (balance), executive function, attention, learning memory and mood (now you’re talking). We are excited that we have

launched a limited number of group fitness classes both online, via Zoom, and outdoors at the pavilion. As weather permits, and as we watch for interest in outdoor classes, more will be added. Aqua Aerobics classes are in the works on a limited basis and may already be up and running by the time of this printing. FROM STANDARDS

Zoom Town Hall on Residential Design Guidelines WEDNESDAY | SEPTEMBER 9TH | 1:00–4:00 PM. The Architectural Review Committee and Subcommittee and the CAM Standards Department are undertaking a review of the current Sun City Grand Residential Design Guidelines (RDGs). The RDGs apply to all exterior modifications to residential properties in Sun City Grand, and are one of the ways in which our community stays attractive and current. This review has several goals, including making sure the RDGs are clear and internally

16

consistent, removing unnecessary items, adding items that need guidelines, and modifying existing guidelines to take account of new developments and resident opinion.

or Cimarron. That is currently not possible, so we will have a virtual Town Hall via Zoom, on Wednesday, September 9th, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Part of this review process is to get residents’ views on the current RDGs, and on changes to the RDGs that would be appropriate. Pre-COVID-19, we would have had an in-person Town Hall in the Grand Ballroom

You can use Zoom on your desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. If you need assistance with setting up Zoom, you can visit the Sun City Grand website for information. Please join us on September 9th!

The Stats of Our Community other than SCG. Beyond Arizona, the State with the most closings was Washington with 10%.

Debbie Goodman Membership Manager

Ever wonder what our average age is, or how many resales there are in Sun City Grand every year? The average age in Sun City Grand is now 73. That’s a .56 increase from one year ago. The number of homes with owners under age 55 is less than 2%. We had 682 homes that closed escrow in the year 2019. Of those closings, 22% were Sun City Grand owners purchasing another Sun City Grand home. An additional 19% were Arizona buyers

Kathy Woodhead (WINNER)

Since we are from Alaska, we tend to catch and eat quite a bit of Salmon during the summer months. I enjoy having our Alaska Salmon canned so we can use it in various types of recipes throughout the year. My "Alaska Salmon Burger" is one of our favorites. Although we love to fish for all species of fish, the Silver Salmon from Resurrection Bay in Seward, Alaska is definitely my favorite.

Alaska Salmon Burgers INGREDIENTS n 2 Cans of Alaska Salmon (I prefer to use Silver Salmon caught in Resurrection Bay in beautiful Seward, Alaska) n 2 Tsp of freshly squeezed Lemon Juice n 1 Egg (beaten) n ½ Cup of Panko Bread Crumbs n ½ Cup of Mayonnaise n 2 Tablespoons of chopped red onion n 2 Tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley n 1 Tablespoon of chopped fresh dill or ½ tsp of dried dill n 1 Tsp of dry mustard DIRECTIONS Drain canned salmon, (reserving 2 tablespoons of the liquid;) Flake the salmon into a bowl. Sprinkle with freshly squeezed lemon juice. Add panko bread crumbs, mayonnaise, beaten egg, chopped red onion, parsley, reserved liquid from the salmon, dill weed and dry mustard. (Use fresh herbs if possible.) Mix well. Form into 4 or 5 patties depending on your burger size preference. Cover and refrigerate until well chilled. (I usually let them chill for a couple of hours.) Pan fry the burgers in a lightly oiled skillet on medium heat for about 5 minutes or until lightly browned; turn the burgers over halfway through cooking time. Place Salmon patty on bottom half of each bun. Top with homemade tarter sauce, lettuce, tomato, red onion. If preferred, you can also add a slice of cheese to your salmon patty while it is cooking. HOMEMADE TARTER SAUCE n ½ Cup Mayonnaise n 2 Tablespoons of Sweet Pickle Relish n 1 tsp of lemon juice n ½ tsp of Dijon mustard n 2 Tablespoons of finely chopped green onion (optional) n Mix together Burger is best served on a Fresh Kaiser Bun with Sweet Potato Fries, Watermelon Wedge, Veggie Garnish and a cold “Alaska Amber Beer.” Enjoy!

Don Bartolotta This is our family’s Famous Bartolotta Burger. It is usually prepared on special occasions. It is a stuffed hamburger, generally stuffed with whatever each person may want. This particular burger is stuffed with sautéed mushrooms, bacon bits, onion and cheddar cheese, served on a hollowed out Italian roll and garnish with jalapeño and sweet pickled red peppers. And let me tell you it was delicious!!

As executive director, Nina oversees all operations at The Colonnade, a 40-acre campus with more than 300 residents in Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Support Services and a staff of over 120 team members who work right in the heart of Sun City Grand. I have a love for serving others and a particular joy for serving seniors.” Her first impressions of the campus were of warmth and energy. “I was welcomed so warmly by so many residents and you could really feel the positive energy,” Nina said. “I’d been at my last company for seven years. And it was hard to leave that family where I had a lot of strong ties to come to a new family. I was nervous and hesitant. So, to be able to walk into here and immediately be greeted so warmly and feel that energy is amazing. That energy has come both from the residents and the staff here, and that is all anybody can ask for.”

We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call Julie Madden (CAM) 623-546-7473 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! THE HISTORY OF CHAPS Ed Harrold, Director of Sun City Grand’s Community Association Management (CAM), introduced the idea of a vacation watch program at a 2001 meeting of Block Watch volunteers. A group of fifteen interested Sun City Grand homeowners met to organize a vacation watch service for residents who spend weeks/months away from their homes. With about two dozen volunteers and two golf carts, Vacation Watch inspections began in March 2001. In January 2004, C.H.A.P.S. expanded its service to include nighttime patrolling of Sun City Grand neighborhoods. Today there are approximately 140 active volunteers using three Association vehicles. C.H.A.P.S. plays a large role in maintaining a low crime rate in Sun City Grand.

VACATION WATCH When residents are away from home for two weeks or more, they are encouraged to fill out a Vacation Watch form which is available in the Welcome Center and the Membership Office at the Palm Center, as well as online at grandinfo.com. Completed forms are to be returned to the Membership Office in the Palm Center.

2 DOZEN VOLUNTEERS & 2 GOLF CARTS LATER Three criteria are required for homeowners to use this program: (1) homeowner must be away for a minimum of two weeks; (2) a keyholder must be identified on the request form; and (3) homes for sale and those using paid house-sitting services will be accepted. C.H.A.P.S. volunteers will walk around the home checking for unlocked doors, unlocked or broken windows, etc. The goal is to make the house look occupied. When an irregularity is found, the designated keyholder will be notified. C.H.A.P.S. does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.

Grand Lifestyles | September 2020 | suncitygrand.com

EVENING PATROL During evening hours, volunteers patrol our streets in Association vehicles to observe and report unusual activity. The volunteers look for breaches of security such as open garage doors, suspicious vehicles and/ or people. Street light outages and road hazards will be reported to the proper authorities. Due to COVID-19 we are presently not going out on Evening Patrol. During the evening homeowners are encouraged to develop the habit of checking the position of their garage door prior to retiring for the night.

TO VOLUNTEER We are actively looking for new volunteers. All residents are welcome. We will provide classroom and field training. There are two-person patrols where you select your days/ evenings to volunteer and you select how many times each month you wish to volunteer.

GENERAL MEETINGS We meet the fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:30 pm at the Sonoran Plaza. We welcome you to come to one of our meetings to learn more about C.H.A.P.S. or you may call the CAM office at (623)546-7473 or the C.H.A.P.S. office at (623)546-7553. At the present time our in-person meetings have been put on hold. Our C.H.A.P.S. Board in conjunction with CAM will inform us when meetings can once again safely take place.

DONATIONS C.H.A.P.S. welcomes all donations. Those wishing to make donations may do so at the Membership Office. Make checks payable to Sun City Grand Community Association and designate “Donation to C.H.A.P.S.” on the note line. 27

CLUB & INTEREST GROUP INFORMATION ARMED FORCES SUPPORT GROUP

You do “not” have to be a Veteran to belong to the AFSG, although many of our members are Veterans. You only need to have a desire to say “Thank You” to our active and Veteran military families and wish to continue to help many of them on their journey of healing. The AFSG has been very successful raising and donating money to vetted 501c 3 Veteran support foundations. Three of these foundations are within the state of AZ – Honor Flight AZ, Soldiers Best Friend, Foundation for Service Dog Support, and one national organization, Feherty’s Troop First Foundation. We would like you to join us in our mission of supporting those who have served, do serve and continue to serve and sacrifice so much to give us our freedom. For more information check out our website – scgarmedforcessupportgroup. “We shall never forget”

BOCCE

Please go to www.scgbocce.com for our latest updates. Everything relating to this club is in flux as this is being written. We will post the latest on our homepage. This club’s board of directors is very concerned for the health of all bocce players on our courts and we are finalizing plans so that the courts may be opened safely. We need to sanitize the balls as long as this covid-19 virus is a threat. When the summer winds down, like in September, we hope to begin organizing DROP-IN BOCCE, a popular event open to all Grand residents. At these events, we teach those who are new to the game and get everyone playing just for fun. Weather permitting, we will offer it on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday evenings. Our league play will begin in mid-October providing we can do it safely relative to the virus. We will be opening up new leagues of 16 players each. We will announce the day and time of available openings, so keep an eye out for this in September.

STITCHERS

During this pandemic our Beaders SIG has continued to order beads and create beautiful items that remain unseen because of Covid-19.. The creativity of our beaders using a pattern or not needs to be seen. Our Quilters SIG has continued to work numerous hours to meet the needs of our community whether making masks or Caring Quilts. Our story of Caring Quilts is a simple one. Quilters found a need to provide comfort quilts to women going thru breast cancer surgery at Banner Del Webb. Every patient gets a quilt from us. We have donated hundreds of quilts to this program, and our quilters did not Quit just because the Sewing Room was closed. This program has extended to Donor Families as well. When a Organ Donor Patient goes into surgery, the family gets a quilt to remember their loved one. A lot of work goes into each quilt, from sorting donated fabric, cutting quilt kits, assemble of quilts, creating an attractive quilt back, cutting the batting and binding, quilting them on both our Long Arm at the Sewing Room or members home machines, binding, labeling and washing and packaging the quilts. Many hands touch each quilt, and each hand is a gift of their hearts. The director of Quilting has a motto she uses "A quilt is a hug from me to you". And that's what we try to give cancer patients at one of the most difficult times of their lives. Paula Forster, President, SCG Stitcher's. Paulaszoo@aol.com

TABLE TENNIS CLUB

When the SCG Board approves our re-opening, please come in to enjoy a great game of table tennis. Why are Bill Gates & Warren Buffet the world’s wealthiest persons? GRAND LEARNING Information and Registration at 623-546-7470 or grandlearning.org Grand Learning has been providing educational opportunities for adults in Sun City Grand and the surrounding area for nearly 20 years. Traditionally held in our well-equipped classrooms, we have offered 100+ classes in the spring and fall semesters. This year has been challenging because of the covid restrictions and having to close our buildings as a result. But as they say…the show must go on! We are diligently working with instructors, making modifications, and are excited to offer several online classes with Zoom beginning in October. To avoid problems joining a meeting and possibly missing your class, it is highly recommended to download Zoom to your device in advance. Just visit zoom.us/ download. Also, please make sure that you are in (ASAP) the Grand Learning registration database in order to sign up

for classes online. Visit grandlearning.org and click on “log-in/register” to create an account with a user name and password. (Note: All Zoom links to access classes are sent to the email in your ASAP account) Now, back to the show. One of the hottest topics these days is the upcoming election. November 2020 Elections will

meet before and after the election for discussions in a non-partisan manner (is that even possible?) Winnie Fritz explores health-related trends and changes occurring in the U.S. and around the world in Staying Healthy in an Often Unhealthy World. Dr. Edelita Jamis offers alternatives to medication and costly procedures with Lifestyle Medicine. Allen Reamer is back on Fridays…with 8 classes from Gothic Cathedrals to the Prado Museum of Art. History buffs will enjoy Civil War classes, or a presentation about Eleanor Roosevelt by Historian Ken Sorensen. Women’s History month may be over, but Bonnie Saunders will take you through the history of Women’s Rights. Staying home a lot these days? Why not learn how to make your home smarter? Tony Spata will show you how! And we’ll “zoom” to outer space in Astronomy Part I and Astronomy Part II. Plus much more! Check our website for updates and class listings.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT

ALL ABOUT ZOOM

We are not the most computer-savvy but would like to know how difficult Zoom is. Almost all the clubs we belong to in Grand are going to have Zoom Meetings in lieu of regular meetings when we return in September and now we hear some of our favorite clubs are teaching classes also via Zoom. All our relatives and friends want us to participate in Zoom Meetings too. Is it safe? Hard to install? Difficult to learn how to use? Greg and Laura

Dear Greg and Laura, Yes indeed, everyone seems to be video conferencing via Zoom. While Zoom had some issues earlier this year with hackers bombing meetings (a term which describes uninvited guests entering meeting), this issue has been remedied with the following changes: n Guests cannot join the meeting before the host of the meeting n Password protections are on by default when setting up meetings and it is recommended that users keep those protections on to prevent uninvited users from joining n Encryption has been beefed up for free users as well as paid

Hundreds of thousands of people are now using Zoom. Simply put, Zoom Meetings are audio and video conferences that allow two or more people to communicate online. You can use Zoom on a PC, Mac, smartphone or tablet. There is a free version and a paid version, but the great majority use only the free version. The easiest way to join Zoom is if a friend, family member or organization sets up the Zoom Meeting and invites you. All you need to do is follow the instructions in the email invitation to start using Zoom. n You will need to click a link to install the Zoom app. You will be asked for permission to install YOU’LL ALWAYS BE TREATED LIKE FAMILY... and run the app. This process will take just a few minutes and then USUALLY you will see a series of screens asking if you want to test your audio and video. You will also be asked to provide a name, which you will want to do so that the “host” knows who is asking to join the meeting. n Rarely, you might be asked for the conference ID and/ or Password so it is helpful to write down those two numbers from the email invitation which you received. n At that point, you will probably get a message that says you have been put in a “waiting room,” or a message that the host has not yet started the meeting. Just wait patiently because the host is busy signing in and/or okaying people to join the meeting. To host (start) your own meeting, you have to go to the Zoom website (https:// zoom.us/), click “Sign Up, It’s Free” at the top of the page and follow the instructions. Once completed, you will be able to host your own meetings. There are numerous videos and Support on the site itself and as well as on You Tube, to help you through the finer points of using the app. For mobile devices, you can

get the Zoom app in the App Store or Google Play Store. This app is so popular because it is easy to use, offers a lot of options for free, and is a relatively reliable tool that works easily and effectively. Within Sun City Grand, the Computer Club will provide an experienced Zoom user to help a member via telephone and to host a quick Zoom meeting just with you, and will offer free classes on Zoom, for members--but try it yourself first. It is quite easy to use. Hopefully, you will be “zooming” in no time.
