INSIDER INFO What does it mean to let wine “breathe”? Letting a wine “breathe” means exposing it to oxygen. For most wines—especially whites—it’s usually not necessary. However, it sometimes improves young red wines. After breathing, the wine should be smoother, more aromatic, and even a bit less tannic than if you just poured it into your glass. It’s a little bit like aging the wine in a cellar, but faster.

Tide Pool Lowdown Tide pools are usually found on rocky shores that are influenced by the rising and falling ocean tides. Many different plants and animals call San Diego’s tide pools home. Ocean tides deliver oxygen and food to these inhabitants, which include sea stars, urchins, sea cucumbers, barnacles, mussels, snails, crabs, limpets, octopi, and anemones. Algae grows in the tide pools as well. Palm kelp, scouring pad, and surf grass are some common species. F L AT ROCK

Always swim near a lifeguard station and watch for zones exclusively for swimming. In summer, they are marked by a yellow flag with a black dot. Ask a lifeguard to help you identify any rip currents so you can avoid them while swimming. Rip currents usually cause a noticeable break in the pattern of the waves.
