G R E E TI N G S ! At Grand Pacific Resorts we’re passionate about finding ways to enrich your vacation ownership, and we hope everything within the pages of Time Together inspires new experiences in the destinations you already love, and encourages you to explore new vacation opportunities. We’re proud of the sense of community you can find throughout our family of resorts (p. 36) where owners and associates make meaningful connections and build traditions year after year. Reintroduce yourself to The Grubbs Family and how they continue their annual vacation tradition by road tripping to the Strawberry Capital of the World in Oxnard, California where they explored the Channel Islands Harbor (p. 8) and found a new home away from home at Channel Island Shores Resort (p. 12). Owners looking to make memories in the Sunshine State can cruise the coast to San Juan Capistrano, travel to the seaside haven of San Clemente, and learn about the rich history as we celebrate the resort’s 30th anniversary (p. 30) and 90th anniversary of the cozy-coastal beach town, or plan your next vacation by discovering all the great events happening throughout the Golden State (p. 94). We’re privileged to have a devoted team (p. 98) who embrace every day as an opportunity to add more value to your ownership. From the Vacation Specialists at Grand Pacific Vacation Services providing personal service to our owners and guests (p. 83), to the team of creative contributors to the pages of Time Together (p. 5), we’re dedicated to our core purpose of “Enriching Lives by Creating Experiences Worth Sharing.” As always, your feedback is valued. Please take a few moments to share your thoughts about this issue and how we can make Time Together and your ownership more enriching to you and your loved ones. You'll find an opportunity on the back cover to win items featured in this issue and provide us with your feedback. On behalf of Grand Pacific Resorts, I want to thank you for allowing us to be your timeshare management company and hope you find the inspiration to treat yourself to more vacations with the newest issue of Time Together. Sincerely,
Nigel Lobo, Chief Operating Officer Grand Pacific Resorts 4

Let’s Pull Back the Curtain Meet Alex R., Content Writer
Meet Taylor G., Our Multimedia/Graphic Designer
“Nothing makes me happier than bringing three of my favorite things together: writing, family, and travel. It’s exciting to work with a team of talented contributors who are just as passionate about bringing family traditions and travel inspiration to life, making Time Together a dream come true project. I hope everything within the pages of this issue inspires as much joy as they were to write about. Growing up, my parents showed me that some of the best memories are made when experiencing new places and cultures with family and friends, which is why I always tell readers: explore more with the people who mean the most to you! Knowing that Time Together inspires new adventures and spending quality time with one another is the biggest reward a writer could ask for.”
“I love bringing Time Together to life! While I help out on photo shoots and video production, I’m really responsible for taking the collective information and bringing it together into a cohesive, entertaining format. Allowing my creativity to take control so you can enjoy flipping through is the best part of working on our owner magazine. It’s so rewarding to be a resource for you and your vacations! After experiencing a lot of what’s in this issue firsthand, my advice would be to try all the things. Seriously! Even if it sounds outside of your comfort zone, just go. Experience it all, and explore everything the destination has in store for you! I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what you find.”
Meet Renée W., Director of Creative Services Brand Management
Meet Chris H., Our Multimedia Production Specialist
“Creating Time Together for you is truly one of the most fulfilling outputs of my work. I think back to watching my mom save-up so we could take a vacation every year because she knew the importance of spending time together and broadening our horizons. Each year, I visit with owners at annual meetings and learn that the same is true for so many of our families. Knowing how valuable your vacation time is, we approach everything that we do with a heartfelt commitment to ensuring that you and your family get the most from your vacation experience. I hope that you connect with the stories we bring to life in this edition, and find value in our recommendations. We would love to know what Time Together means to you, and how we can make it better in the future. If you give us your feedback, we’ll put in the work to make sure it’s everything you want it to be!”
“I was part of the pilot edition of Time Together – I’ve been involved from the start! I love being able to look back and see how it’s grown and expanded to be what it is today. We have a small team, but the work we put forth is comparable to one significantly larger! Our staff is dedicated to making sure you know and see what is out there. I’m the one taking professional photos and producing the videos of our destinations and resorts, and really hope that everything you see inside this edition inspires you to get out and explore. Hopefully it will inspire you to take some photos and videos of your own for us to feature in future editions, too! More than anything though, I hope that reading Time Together inspires you to try new things, spend time with your loved ones, and enjoy every minute of it.” T I M E TOG E T HE R : 2018

Reacquaint yourself with the Grubbs Dan, Kristina, and their two young daughters, Aubrey and Payton, are a family of avid vacationers who make annual family trips a top priority. We had the pleasure of meeting them when Dan won our 2016 GPX Father’s Day Contest, earning them a free 7-night stay vacation!

As we got to know the family better, we learned that Kristina was brought up with annual vacations and is now a timeshare owner herself at RiverPointe Napa Valley. Kristina’s mother passed down her ownership in 2001 so Kristina could continue to treasure past memories while creating new ones with her family. The Grubbs love using their week each year to create new memories. They also take advantage of any opportunity to explore new destinations and truly understand the value of spending time together making memories in exciting places.
“We love to travel and want to give our kids a childhood filled with amazing memories that we’ve created together,” Kristina said. Since meeting The Grubbs family two years ago, we’ve followed them on several of their vacation adventures, ranging from Big Bear to Branson—and now, Channel Island Shores!

A NEW
Dan and Kristina used their Owner Benefits to continue their annual vacation tradition by road tripping up the coast to the Strawberry Capital of the World in Oxnard, California. With eco-friendly travel as another top priority for their family, the Grubbs opted for a hybrid car rental to wind their way up the Pacific Coast Highway and soak in the stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.

When on a road trip, gas costs (especially at these current prices) can be cost prohibitive. If you have a long drive coming up and don’t own a hybrid car, it may be beneficial to you—and the environment—to rent one! Hybrids are available at all major rental car companies.
Gran dPacific Re s o r t s . c o m
Pros of renting a hybrid: • Less expensive to operate and get 20% better mileage than regular cars • Improved fuel efficiency, preventing unnecessary consumption
• Reduced emissions, helping keep pollution at a minimum
CHANNEL ISLAND NATIONAL PARK FUN FACTS: • The chain of islands boasts 175 miles of pristine undeveloped coastline • Temperatures range from 20-100 degrees • Home to 150 unique species found nowhere else in the world, earning them the nickname Galapagos of North America • Oldest human remains in North America dated at 13,000 years old was found here • Is located 60 miles from 18 million people but is one of the least visited of all the National Parks

This adventurous family are pros when it comes to road tripping.
“Family road trips are a rite of passage,” said Dan, an avid childhood road tripper himself. Always looking for ways to make long drives more fun and engaging—and also to stave off some of the “Are we there yet?” questions—Dan and Kristina always have snacks at the ready. The parents keep everyone entertained by playing road trip classics like “I spy” or even singing along to car karaoke as ways to pass the time on long stretches of road that don’t include using gadgets. The Grubbs even manage to make their road trips educational!
“Creating a list of questions or fun facts for quizzes to take on a road trip is one of our favorite ways to not only learn more about each other or the areas we’re visiting, but also sets the stage for a lot of laughter and smiles on the way to our resort,” explained Kristina. Once the family rolled up and checked into Channel Island Shores Resort, they were happy to discover how close they were to Oxnard State Beach and quickly made plans for a family volleyball match. They got a free ball rental from the front desk then bumped, set, and spiked it on the beach volleyball court as the sun set behind them. The next day, The Grubbs set out to explore Oxnard. They drove to Channel Islands Harbor, just five minutes from the resort, and spent the early part of the afternoon kayaking through the marina. To the girls’ delight, they also encountered seals napping right on the docks!
12

After working up an appetite, they had their pick of restaurants and dessert shops at the harbor before deciding on Fisherman’s Catch Restaurant for a taste of locally caught fish. After lunch, they all treated themselves to frozen yogurt at Buttercups Cool Treats where Aubrey and Payton loved selecting all their favorite toppings and flavors!

cactus cooler
When vacationing under the desert sun—no matter the time of year—there's nothing more refreshing than a Cactus Cooler Cocktail over ice! Even more delicious than its citrusy sweet taste? This drink is less than 200 calories—even less if you make it non-alcoholic. We picked up all the ingredients at a grocery store around the corner from our resort and prepared our drinks in time to enjoy the beautiful sunset from our patio.
Ingredients for two cocktails: 1 ounce of orange juice 1 ounce of lime juice 3 ounces of cranberry juice 1 ounce of tangerine or other favorite juice 8 ounce can of lemon lime soda
Optional: 2 ounces of tequila 1 ounce of triple sec (Pro tip: We purchased the little 2-ounce bottles at a discount liquor store)
Directions: Using a large shaker or covered pitcher, add the ice, juices, and optional alcohol then shake for 30 seconds. Pour mixture into a serving glass and add a dash of lemon-lime soda. Garnish with fresh fruit slices, mint leaves, and a fun straw then enjoy!

San Clemente:

BEFORE BECOMING A
CIT Y The quaint town’s decidedly Mediterranean feel and relaxed pace of life could easily be mistaken for a vacation destination somewhere along the Amalfi Coast rather than just a short drive away from Southern California’s two most metropolitan cities—the exact sentiment San Clemente has aimed to evoke since its inception 90 years ago. San Clemente was originally occupied by the native Juañeno people but was virtually uninhabited until Father Junipero Serra established the San Juan Capistrano Mission in 1776. Natives were conscripted to work for the mission, and it was during this time that native and Spanish settlers alike began to establish villages nearby.

A MAN WITH A
Vision
In 1925, Ole Hanson, the mayor of Seattle and major land developer, craved a sun-filled seaside escape that would serve as a vacation haven for Southern Californians tired of “the big city.” With its idyllic weather, pristine beaches, and fertile soil, San Clemente embodied Hanson’s vision of a Mediterranean-style resort town. The town’s founder declared: “I have a clean canvas, and I am determined to paint a clean picture. Think of it—a canvas five miles long and one-and-a-half miles wide…my San Clemente by the sea!” Hanson’s ideas for developing the area were initially rejected, many people fearing that investing in a city far removed from Southern California’s two main urban areas would spell financial ruin. Yet Hanson clung to his dream. Then one rainy day in December of 1925, Hanson invited over 600 LA inhabitants to venture out to the undeveloped plot and hear his real estate presentation, providing luxury transportation and meals for all interested buyers. His efforts proved to be worthwhile: Within six months, Hanson sold over 1,200 lots at an average price of $300/lot. Private homes and public structures alike were developed, including San Clemente’s iconic pier, community center, the Beach Club, and San Clemente Plaza. In an effort to lend the town a uniform Spanish colonial charm, a mandate was issued with each land deed that required buildings sport white stucco exteriors and red tile roofs, an architectural style that’s since distinguished the area. A House Of
ROMANCE Hanson himself wanted a slice of his seaside resort dream. He built a villa-style home for his family that he named “Casa Romantica,” a sprawling estate perched on a bluff overlooking the town’s iconic pier. He lost the property in the Great Depression shortly after inhabiting it, and the home was confiscated by the bank. After passing through the hands of several different owners, Casa Romantica eventually fell into a state of neglect and seemed doomed for demolition. Fortunately, a group of San Clemente activists, coupled with generous donations from local residents, were able to preserve the historic house, restoring it to its original glory and converting it into San Clemente’s cultural and historical center.

THE WHITEHOUSE OF
THE WEST San Clemente became a sought-after getaway not only for weary LA residents, but for weary DC politicians as well. In 1969, Richard Nixon purchased a portion of the HH Cotton Estate, one of the original Hanson homes. The property was nicknamed the “Western Whitehouse”—a term used for a president’s vacation home. World leaders would come visit Nixon at his San Clemente home, and after his resignation, he made the Western Whitehouse his permanent residence until he sold it in 1980. Prior to Nixon, the estate also hosted Franklin D. Roosevelt who liked playing cards while overlooking the ocean.

HONORING THE LOOKING TO
San Clemente is celebrating its 90th year of becoming a recognized city and is now home to approximately 65,000 residents who are committed to preserving its original charm. On top of restoring and maintain historical buildings, vendors are also designing new storefronts to match Hanson’s original vision of white stucco walls contrasted with red-tiled roofs.

We can connect to anyone, anywhere, anytime with the click of a button. While email and social media posts are certainly a convenient way of reaching multiple people quickly, the art of personal communication is being replaced by the luxury of instant communication. Picking out postcards and sending them with handwritten greetings is a fun and creative way of letting your friends and family (and the neighbor watching your house) know that you’re having a good time and are thinking of them. It’s also certain to make their day when they receive a personal note in the mailbox. (When was the last time that happened?) Often times, postcards will become keepsakes that your loved ones will save, re-read, and cherish whenever they feel like taking a trip down memory lane. It’s not quite the same printing out an email to place in a box! We’ve enjoyed this Harris family tradition for years, and as a result, our four grandkids have a shoebox full of postcards from our travels. It's fun to share our adventures with 34

them knowing that maybe someday they’ll visit the very places we’ve sent postcards from. We have a collection of a couple hundred vintage postcards at home that we rotate on display—sort of like holiday decorations. We have cards for all the major holidays as well as birthdays, anniversaries, and many travel destinations. Postage is only .35 cents for a regular size card or .50 for an oversized one. Don't forget to pack postcard stamps when you travel. It makes it so easy to drop a couple of cards in the mail each day. You can also make your own personalized postcards, which is easier than ever.

How to make your own postcards in 3 easy steps: 1

Is Your Sunscreen Green? Sunscreen has come a long way since it’s invention in 1938 by a Swiss chemistry student. As recently as a few decades ago, many people didn’t give much thought to using any form of sun protection. Although sunscreen gained more fame after WWII with the invention of Coppertone (remember the baby on the bottle?), it wasn’t until the late 1970s that the FDA began to regulate production, and sunscreen began to be widely used. However, recent discoveries show that many sunscreens contain chemicals that can potentially put our health— and the environment—at risk. The chemical ingredients contained in many sunscreens have been linked to various health issues, and our oceans are also being affected. Certain active ingredients in chemical sunscreen damage coral, making reefs far less able to regenerate. According to Reuters, between six thousand and fourteen thousand tons of sunscreen end up in coral reef areas each 76
Gran dPacific Re s o r t s . c o m
year, and sunscreen chemicals deposited in more remote swimming areas can easily flow downstream into coastal waters. The good news is that there is a viable, healthy, and environmentally sustainable alternative: organic sunscreen! Its innovative yet all-natural ingredients eliminate all the chemicals we don’t want on our skin—or in the environment—while still protecting us and the planet. In fact, effective in January 2021, Hawaii has officially banned all chemical sunscreens in an effort to protect its waters. In addition to helping preserve marine life, natural SPF also has multiple health benefits for those of us who slather it on: 1
Natural minerals form a protective barrier on the skin, unlike chemicals such as parabens and oxybenzone that absorb into the skin and the bloodstream.
2
No more having to wait 20 minutes after applying to go out in the sun! Unlike chemical sunscreens, organic options take effect immediately and don’t break down in the sun.
3
Organic SPF naturally provides a broad spectrum of sun protection while most chemical sunscreens provide only UVB protection or require a mix of chemicals to achieve both UVA and UVB protection.

WHEN CHOOSING A SUNSCREEN... TRY TO AVOID THE FOLLOWING INGREDIENTS: • Oxybenzone—the top offender! • 4-meth-benzyldencamphor (4-MBC) • Benzophenone-3 • Octyl-methyl-cinnamates (OMC) • Octyl-dimethyl-para-aminobenzoic Acid (OD-PABA) • Homosalate (HMS)
LOOK FOR SOME OF THESE INGREDIENTS INSTEAD: • Avocado oil, red raspberry seed oil, or tea tree oil • Cocoa butter • Vitamin E • Aloe vera • Grape seed • Tocopheryl acetate (derived from vitamin E and a natural alternative to parabens)

One of our favorite picks for organic sunscreen is the COOLA collection. Scientifically advanced and locally sourced, their range of plantbased suncare products are fully sustainable, rich in antioxidants, and offer full spectrum coverage. With sunscreens designed for everything from face and body to sports and baby, there is something for everyone to enjoy safe fun in the sun!

VACAT ION SP ECI A L IS T SP O T L IGH T It’s Our Pleasure to Introduce You to
Christine W.
Christine has been part of our team for over ten years and enjoys assisting owners with their benefits and helping make their vacations a reality. Her favorite part of the job is that each day is the gift of a new experience. She loves getting to talk to a variety of folks, helping them plan everything from their annual vacation to a family reunion, to honeymoons, and so much more! During her many years of making meaningful connections with owners, Christine has learned that owners consider their home resort and the associates as part of their family. Her most memorable professional moment being the time she helped an owner who had lost a parent plan a “Celebration of Life” at Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort. She learned that they wanted to celebrate their parent’s life where they had made so many cherished memories. “I was so grateful to help them,” explains Christine. “The experience made me realize I’m not just making a reservation—I’m helping make a memory that could impact a family for the rest of their lives.” Christine enjoys talking with owners and says that her most common requests are for the most budget friendly resort options and to vacation in Southern California. Her advice to owners looking to book their next vacation is to plan far in advance so the GPVS team can make their vacation dreams come true! Along with being passionate about the vacation experience, she is also a dedicated grandmother. With her music background and musically inclined family, she enjoys singing with her daughters and grandchildren. Her family loves to vacation at Grand Pacific Palisades because it’s perfect for all ages! Their favorite resort amenities are the family pool and arcade. Christine says her grandson always asks, “Nana, when are we going to the resort again!” T I M E TOG E T H E R : 2018

Giving back to our local communities has been at the heart of Grand Pacific Resorts for decades, with our efforts rooted in a mantra of ‘what matters to you, matters to us’. This year, we were inspired to see so many owners join us in giving back. From sharing charities with us that you would like us to support, to actually donating your vacation time to families in need, we experienced a record year engaging our community of owners and charitable causes.

Giving TIME TOGETHER
We partnered with Send Me on Vacation, an organization that funds trips for financially disadvantaged breast cancer survivors, for many years and are proud to continue to grow our partnership even stronger. In 2017, we furthered our longstanding partnership by launching a new program called Revive & Thrive. Through this program, you as an owner can donate your vacation week to a cancer survivor to provide her and her family with some muchneeded rest and rejuvenation. Through your generosity and kindness, four women and their families were gifted a week-long vacation. Some of you that donated your weeks asked us to relay messages of hope and love, and some stories of going through cancer yourself. It was an absolute honor to present the deserving women with their vacation weeks, and sharing your stories with them was overwhelmingly emotional. We are always inspired by the families that Send Me On Vacation supports, but we're exceedingly uplifted and inspired by our owners gracious gifts. We were already a top sponsor for their benefit, Champions for Charity, when we learned that they were short of their goal to raise $50,000 by only $890. Our team came together and added $900 to our donation so that Send Me On Vacation could exceed their goal and send even more women on the vacations they deserve. If you are feeling inspired and would like to give the gift of rejuvenation by donating your vacation week to a breast cancer survivor, fill out the form at https://gpxvations.com/donate

SWING INTO ACTION
Every year, we host an annual Christel House Open Golf Tournament, a fundraiser in which the proceeds directly benefit the charity Christel House. This organization is committed to helping transform the lives of impoverished youth around the world through education, medical care, and love in an effort to break the poverty cycle and raise self-sufficient members of society. This year, we raised over $50,000 to help provide children in need with the education and tools necessary to create a better future for not only themselves, but also their families and communities. That’s a 43% increase from our donation last year! We know how generous and giving our guests are, and decided to open another opportunity for our guests to get involved with our first annual Christel House Putt-Putt! This mini golf fundraiser was held right on the mini golf course at Carlsbad Seapointe Resort, and we were so excited to see so many of you show up for the cause.

This summer we extended summer internships to Christel House graduates: Charley Jackson and Zirci Ayala. These young women attended Christel House Indianapolis from first to twelfth grade, and are currently attending college in Indianapolis. During their time at our home office, they received hands-on experience in hospitality marketing, event coordination, and helped out at Grand Pacific Palisades for two weeks. While we were the ones teaching them new skills, we learned something as well: you can give back more than money – you can use your time and talent to provide opportunities to the next generation, setting them up for success. Learn more about Christel House and how you can get involved by visiting their website at https://christelhouse.org/. Just a $25 donation covers medical care for 60 students!

Clean
AS A WHISTLE We partnered with Clean the World, an organization committed to gathering and providing basic hygiene necessities for people around the globe affected by poverty, homelessness, and natural disasters, back in 2016. In 2018, with your help we gathered unused or partially used soaps from guest units to produce…drumroll please…12,928 bars of soap! The recycled soap goes into hygiene kits that are then sent to impoverished countries and emergency room distribution centers. It was even used to help out during the hurricanes last year! We want to do even more, and know you do too! So when you’re leaving your vacation, don’t throw bath items away. Simply leave them on the counter, and we’ll take it from there.
