Fondés par Ludmilla Chiriaeff en 1957, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal transmettent la passion de la danse et stimulent l’imaginaire collectif. Cette compagnie se consacre au développement du ballet sous toutes ses formes, en s’appuyant sur les fondements de la technique classique. Les Grands Ballets rayonnent sur les scènes du monde entier, particulièrement depuis la nomination de Gradimir Pankov à la direction artistique en 1999. Les succès remportés ces dernières années à travers le monde en témoignent : Oman (2012), Chine (2011), MoyenOrient (2009), Amérique du Nord et Europe (Madrid, Berlin, Munich et une participation de trois semaines au Festival des Étés de la danse à Paris, entre autres). Chef de file du milieu culturel montréalais, la compagnie se distingue aujourd’hui en présentant des œuvres d’artistes de la relève (Didy Veldman, Stijn Celis, Christian Spuck, Stephan Thoss et le canadien Peter Quanz) et de grands chorégraphes comme Jiří Kylián, Mats Ek, Shen Wei ou encore Ohad Naharin. Les Grands Ballets s’engagent également auprès de la communauté. C’est ainsi que, depuis 1997, le Fonds Casse-Noisette pour enfants rend le temps des Fêtes inoubliable pour des milliers d’enfants issus de milieux défavorisés en leur permettant de participer à des ateliers éducatifs et d’assister à une représentation du célèbre ballet Casse-Noisette. Le Marché Casse-Noisette, premier marché de Noël philanthropique de Montréal, créé en 2010, contribue spécifiquement à ce Fonds. Les Grands Ballets nourrissent d’autres projets ambitieux, notamment ceux du Centre national de danse-thérapie, lancé en 2013. La compagnie emménagera par ailleurs dans l’Édifice Wilder : Espace Danse en 2017, en plein cœur du Quartier des spectacles à Montréal, lieu unique de création et de convergence. Toutes ces initiatives sont dictées par une conviction : Faire bouger le monde. Autrement.

Ever since Ludmilla Chiriaeff founded the company in 1957, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal has been communicating its passion for dance and firing the imagination of audiences worldwide. This widely acclaimed company is devoted to developing ballet in all its forms, while remaining faithful to the spirit of classical ballet. Les Grands Ballets has lit up stages around the world, particularly since the appointment of Gradimir Pankov as Artistic Director in 1999. The company’s reputation has been reinforced by many international successes over the past few years: Oman (2012), China (2011), the Middle East (2009), North America and Europe (Madrid, Berlin, Munich and three weeks at Les Étés de la danse in Paris). A leader among Montreal’s cultural institutions, the company now presents works by up-and-coming artists—Didy Veldman, Stijn Celis, Christian Spuck, Stephan Thoss and canadian Peter Quanz—and renowned choreographers such as Jiří Kylián, Mats Ek, Shen Wei and Ohad Naharin. The company is also strongly committed to the local community. Since 1997, The Nutcracker Fund for Children has given thousands of children from disadvantaged communities an unforgettable holiday season, with educational workshops and a free performance of The Nutcracker. In 2010, Les Grands Ballets launched The Nutcracker Market—Montreal’s first non-profit Christmas market—to raise money for the Fund. Les Grands Ballets is currently preparing a number of large-scale projects, in particular those for the National Centre for Dance Therapy, launched in 2013. En 2017, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, Tangente, l’École de danse contemporaine de Montréal et l’Agora de la danse se réuniront sous un même toit, en plein cœur du Quartier des spectacles. Afin de compléter le financement du projet, estimé à 99,2 M$, les quatre organismes ont entrepris une campagne majeure de financement conjointe de 25,8 M$.

SYNOPSIS
« Si
le rêve est une traduction de la vie éveillée, la vie éveillée est également une traduction du rêve. » René Magritte
Le rêve est un lieu où tout est permis. Pour Stephan Thoss, se perdre dans ses fantasmes, dans son univers onirique, peut être dangereux pour l’artiste, l’auteur ou le chorégraphe... Pour créer Rêve, Thoss s’est inspiré de son propre tourment de créateur. Il y a une femme, la Rêveuse. Son esprit — tel le tiroir de son pupitre — est rempli d’idées disparates, d’étranges personnages et histoires. Elle s’y accroche mais n’a pourtant pas le courage de les développer entièrement et n’ose pas les partager avec les autres, de peur que l’on se moque d’elle. Histoire : La Femme Lampe aime l’Homme Miroir, mais craint qu’en lui avouant son amour, l’Homme Miroir ne la rejette. Elle aimerait mieux vivre une vie de lampe plutôt que d’être blessée par l’Homme qu’elle aime. Il y a un homme, le Rêveur, l’ombre des émotions de la Rêveuse, un composite de ses histoires inachevées. Il connaît le danger qui se cache dans le tiroir où la Rêveuse a jeté les pages froissées de ses rêves inachevés. Il tente de mettre la Rêveuse en garde. Histoire : Tous les jours, l’Homme Miroir se tient devant la porte de la Femme Lampe, n’osant pas frapper et lui dire combien il l’aime. Il se tient devant sa porte si souvent et pour si longtemps qu’il se dédouble. Bientôt, de l’intérieur du tiroir sortent les alter egos qui hantent la Rêveuse. Ils deviennent enragés et coléreux, secouant et brassant le tiroir, réprimandant et harcelant la Rêveuse. La Rêveuse devient si obsédée par ses personnages, et son incapacité à compléter leurs histoires, qu’elle est aspirée dans son propre fantasme et s’y dédouble. Saura-t-elle reprendre pied dans le monde réel?

SYNOPSIS
“If the dream is a translation of waking life, waking life is also a translation of the dream.” René Magritte
A dream is a place where everything is permitted. According to Stephan Thoss, getting lost in one’s fantasies, one’s dream world, can be a dangerous thing for the artist, the author, or the choreographer… In creating Dream Away, Thoss was inspired by his own creative torment. There is a woman, the Dreamer. Her mind — and her desk drawer — are filled with odd ideas and strange characters and stories. She cares about them, yet lacks the courage to fully develop them or share them with others, fearing that people will mock her. Story: The Lamp Woman loves the Mirror Man, but is afraid that the Mirror Man will spurn her if she avows her love. She would rather live life as a lamp than be hurt by the man she loves. There is a man, also the Dreamer, the shadow of the woman’s emotions, a composite of her unfinished stories. He knows the danger that lies in the drawer where the woman has tossed the crumpled pages full of unfinished dreams. He tries to warn her. Story: Each day, the Mirror Man stands before the Lamp Woman’s door, not daring to knock and to tell her how much he loves her. He stands in front of her door so often and for so long that he doubles himself. Soon, from inside the desk drawer, her alter egos begin to haunt the Dreamer, tormenting her. They become enraged and irate, rattling and shaking the drawer, berating and haranguing her. The Dreamer becomes so obsessed by her characters, and her inability to complete their stories, that she is drawn into her own fantasy and replicates herself. Will she be able to regain a foothold in the real world?

Magritte et le surréalisme Dans Rêve, Stephan Thoss fait référence à une psychologie du temps, et aux Surréalistes, en particulier Magritte, qui remettaient en question tout ce que l’on voit. « Les objets concrets, les choses que l’on peut nommer, nous rassurent. Les choses que l’on ne peut nommer nous effraient », dit Thoss. Les peintures de Magritte présentent des objets ordinaires dans des situations et des juxtapositions inhabituelles, défiant nos perceptions de la réalité : une énorme pomme remplit une pièce; un oiseau blanc dissimule le visage d’un homme au chapeau melon; l’image d’une pipe porte la légende « Ceci n’est pas une pipe. ». Quand Magritte était enfant, sa mère s’est suicidée en se noyant dans une rivière voisine. On a dit que lorsque son corps a été trouvé, le tissu de sa robe recouvrait son visage, une image qui apparaît dans plusieurs œuvres du peintre. D’après certains psychanalystes, les références à la réalité et à l’illusion dans les tableaux du surréaliste sont liées à la mort de sa mère : le conflit entre la réalité — savoir qu’elle est morte — et l’illusion — souhaiter qu’elle soit vivante.
« Mes peintures sont des images qui ne dissimulent rien: elles évoquent le mystère. À leur vue on peut se demander ce qu’elles signifient. Elles ne signifient rien, tout comme le mystère est insondable. » René Magritte Thoss souligne: « En Allemagne, les journalistes veulent toujours que tout soit expliqué avec précision, d’une façon que je trouve rigide et exagérément analytique. Je suis contre cette façon de penser. Parfois la réponse à « Pourquoi? » est « Parce que ». En danse, vous avez besoin de regarder, voir et sentir, d’accepter et adhérer à l’idée qu’il n’y a pas de réponse et que tout ne peut pas être expliqué. »
Magritte and Surrealism In Dream Away, Stephan Thoss refers to a psychology of time, and to the Surrealists, in particular Magritte, who questioned everything we see. Says Thoss, “Concrete objects, things we can name, reassure us. Things we cannot name frighten us.” Magritte’s paintings display ordinary objects in unusual settings and juxtapositions, challenging our perceptions of reality: an enormous apple fills a room; a white bird obscures the face of a man in a bowler hat; an image of a pipe bears the caption “This is not a pipe”. When Magritte was a boy, his mother drowned in a nearby river. It was said that when her body was found, the cloth of her dress covered her face, an image that appears in a number of Magritte’s paintings. According to some psychoanalysts, the references to reality and illusion in Magritte’s paintings are connected to his mother’s death: the conflict between reality — knowing she is dead — and illusion — wishing she were alive.

Says Thoss: “In Germany, journalists always want everything to be explained very precisely, in a way that I find rigid and overly analytical. I am against this way of thinking. Sometimes the answer to ‘Why?’ is ‘Because’. In dance, you need to look and see and feel, to accept and embrace the idea that there is no answer and that not everything can be explained.”

Enfin, je suis fier de vous annoncer que nous organisons le premier symposium national sur la danse et le mieux-être, qui aura lieu à Toronto les 4 et 5 novembre 2016. Nous tenons à vous remercier de votre soutien et sommes impatients de vous en dire plus sur nos projets de la prochaine saison, lors de laquelle nous nous déploierons dans notre nouvelle maison, l’Édifice Wilder : Espace danse ! First and foremost, the data collection of our major three-year research project on the effects of dance therapy on seniors has ended. La saison 2015-2016 du Centre national de dansethérapie (CNDT) fut très stimulante. La collecte de données de notre projet de recherche majeur de trois ans sur les effets de la danse-thérapie auprès d’aînés s’est terminée. Nous avons par ailleurs reçu une forte demande pour des séances privées de danse-thérapie en groupe qui nous a encouragés à mettre sur pied un programme dans les studios des Grands Ballets.
Moreover, we have developed two research projects in dance therapy outside of Quebec with the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa and York University in Toronto, in partnership with McGill University in Montreal. Finally, I am proud to announce that we are organizing the first national symposium on dance and well-being, which will take place in Toronto on November 4-5, 2016.
