News... You will notice a few changes in this season’s brochure. Firstly we have put the season in to Genres rather than date order, this is so you can find the type of shows you like. We have as always listed the season in date order on the back page for you. Booking Fees: In line with legislation our £1.50 per ticket booking fees is now included in all stated ticket prices.

Welcome The Grand Theatre is truly a theatre at the heart of its community. As well as presenting a great programme of professional drama, dance and children’s theatre this season, The Grand plays host to the outstanding talents of our local performers from seven different groups from all across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. Literally hundreds of local people will be ‘treading the boards’ this spring. Performing on a professional stage in front of a packed house is an amazing thrill, whether you’re one of the pupils participating in Schools Alive, a seasoned singer from a Blackpool Operatic Society, or a natural comic from a local drama group. Watching the amazing quality, commitment and enthusiasm that these performers bring to their productions is equally as exciting, so why not come along and see for yourself? As well as showcasing local talent, The Grand plays its part in the Showzam! festival, presenting the world premiere of Meet the Hogwallops – a rip-roaring romp through the crazy lives of the eccentric Hogwallop family who refuse to play life by the rules. Mixing comedy, circus and downright silliness together into the perfect recipe for a fun family treat, this is a must for all the family. There is, of course, something for the seasoned theatre-lover too, with Brassed Off, Eternal Love, the RSC’s First Encounter: Taming of the Shrew and Entertaining Mr Sloane gracing our stage. Plus, we continue with our programme of amazing national and international contemporary dance. This season you can enjoy performances from Fabulous Beast and James Wilton Dance as well as the return of Northern Ballet with a charming production for younger audiences of the fairy-tale favourite, Three Little Pigs. So, young or young-at-heart, drama or dance-lover, or just passionate about performing, I feel sure there’s something for everyone to enjoy this spring. We look forward to welcoming you.

Dance at The Grand Since April 2012 The Grand Theatre has been funded by Arts Council England to present a programme of contemporary dance with a range of regional, national and international companies. In parallel with our programme, we have also worked with these companies to offer a range of opportunities to be involved with dance. To date, this has included nearly 1000 children and young people working with dancers in schools and colleges to learn about the companies and experience dancing with them. We have offered these opportunities to local and Lancashire dancers to perform on stage in our new Curtain Raiser Programme. We continue to work in partnership with our local Dance Development Officer - Sarah Hall, Ludus Dance, Blackpool Cultural Services and Blackpool P.E. and Sport Team in addition to Colleges and Universities.

The Little Mermaid

Wednesday 2 April

Sunday 27 April

Directed by Ellen Kent, this brand new production is traditionally staged and features beautiful sets and costumes and international guest soloists. La Bohème is one of the most romantic operas ever written. It tells the tragic tale of the doomed, consumptive Mimi and her love for a penniless writer.

Join Ballet Theatre UK on this dramatic re-telling of Hans Christian Andersen’s all-time favourite story of The Little Mermaid, who falls in love with a human Prince and gives up everything to win his love. The kind hearted Little Mermaid rescues the Prince during a storm at sea, and begins a journey that takes her far from her home beneath the waves. Determined to pursue her love on to the shore she makes a bargain with an evil Sea Witch, but it comes at a heavy price.

The set reflects the Bohemian art of the period and will include a colourful carnival scene, a local brass band, real snow effects and Muzetta’s dog will also make an entrance. This classic tale of Parisian love and loss features many famous arias including Your Tiny Hand is Frozen, They Call Me Mimi and Muzetta’s Waltz.

Ballet Theatre UK’s charming and poignant ballet explores the nature of longing, how making choices has lasting consequences and how goodness can be rewarded in unexpected ways.

Beautiful Beast - Norrdans. Choreographer Thomas Noone said: Magical horses, godesses, warriors, fires - when I first heard the music of Gjallahorn I was taken to a mythical world at once very old and also timeless, ancient and contemporary, and so for this collaboration wanted to create my own atemporal tale through dance to compliment their soundscape.

Push - Company Chameleon. Athletic yet sensitive, the work continues a conversation that began in childhood between artists Anthony Missen and Kevin Edward Turner. Triple Bill

Tuesday 1 April

THE GRAND a great night out!

The two halves of Michael Keegan-Dolan’s thrilling dance theatre double bill are a contrast in light and dark that mirrors the Stravinsky music of the same name. The imagery in The Rite of Spring is dark, shocking, violent and sexual. The rhythmic elements of the music are played out in scenes of a pagan fertility rite, as age is sacrificed and Mother Earth is worshipped.

25

By contrast Petrushka is bright and light. Elements of folk dances and warmer days are conjured as the company dances for approval from their ancestors. Performed by an international cast of 14, both works are theatrical interpretations of the original music that created such an outrage and excitement in the early 20th century.

Thursday 3 April 12◦ North, the fresh and dynamic North West Graduate Dance Company, introduces a new triple bill with work by the talented James Wilton (Choreographer for the Opening Ceremony of the Rugby World Cup). His dance is daring, intensely physical, and with infectious energy. In contrast, Lea Anderson (Artistic Director of The Cholmondleys and Featherstonehaughs) creates fascinating, challenging and visually stunning dance theatre which bursts with idiosyncratic movement.

Glorious. **** JENNY GILBERT, THE INDEPENDENT

Guest Emma Lansley presents her trio Talking to Mia and Butch, a quirky dance theatre piece with a light twist, focussing on the complex lives of three socially awkward individuals. With music by Kate Bush and a hint of lemons, this is humorous and heart-warming dance.

Three Little Pigs - A ballet for children

Chris & Pui Roadshow

Saturday 5 April

Wednesday 9 April

After the fantastic sell-out success of Ugly Duckling and Bafta nominated television adaptation for CBeebies, Northern Ballet is delighted to announce their new ballet for children, Three Little Pigs.

See Chris and Pui from ‘Show Me Show Me’ live on stage!

THE GRAND a great night out!

Three little pigs set out into the world. The first pig decides to build a house of straw, the second a house made of sticks and the third pig chooses to build a house of bricks.

35

Then along comes a very hungry wolf. The wolf begs each little pig to invite him in for dinner. When they refuse he threatens to huff and puff and blow their houses down. Will any of the pigs be smart enough to escape the big bad wolf?

CBeebies’ favourite double act is bringing songs, rhymes, comedy sketches and lots of joining in for all the family. Poor Old MacDonald has recklessly lost his animals! Jason Manford First World Problems Thursday 23 January Everybody’s favourite northern comedian, Jason Manford, has announced a brand new tour for 2014. The show promises to feature a wealth of comedy anecdotes, comic misunderstandings and audience banter delivered with Jason’s likeable charm and teasingly intelligent wit. Jason said: “Some of you might think I’ve had a career change what with all the opera and musical theatre I’ve been doing lately. Not a chance, I’m excited to be getting back to what I really love the most – stand up!” Effortlessly entertaining.

Ed Byrne Roaring Forties Friday 7 February A self-confessed “miserable old git” since the age of 23, Ed Byrne is now in his forties. While for others this might result in a crisis that prompts the purchase of a sportscar, Ed embraces middle age with open arms. Come join him, as he truly comes of age and gives out his clarion cry: “I am in my Forties. HEAR ME ROAR!” Comedy’s holy grail... Go See! THE SUNDAY TIMES

The Vicar of Dibley THE GRAND a great night out!

By Ian Gower and Paul Carpenter

41

Tuesday 24 to Saturday 28 June Life in the sleepy Oxfordshire village of Dibley is turned upside-down when the ancient Rev Pottle dies and the diocese sends a new-fangled female vicar, Geraldine Granger, as his replacement. Her arrival is met with a mixture of wonder and horror from the assorted collection of rural yokels who call Dibley home. Autocratic head of the Parish Council, David Horton, is particularly appalled, and when it becomes clear that Geraldine does not intend to play second fiddle, he resolves to have her removed. But in the run-up to Verger Alice’s spectacularly silly wedding, even David must admit that Geraldine is the best thing to have ever happened to Dibley.
