A LITTLE WORD FROM US We are so excited to bring you the 8th edition of the MR & MRS magazine. This little magazine was born out of a desire to promote Wellington, and the surrounding areas, as a prime option for weddings. With so many talented people involved in the local wedding industry, contributing to the most stylish weddings taking place each season, it is a particularly unenviable task choosing which weddings will fill the pages. This year the Real Wedding section showcases Wellington and the unique opportunities it presents for weddings. Our cover couple, Haydn & Narelle, whose wedding encapsulated one of the many backdrops our quirky and cool capital offers also epitomised how couples are searching for new and unique ways to celebrate their individuality as a couple.

HADYN & NARELLE 24 / 9 / 2016
M&M: Tell us your engagement story… H: It was the night before our friend Dom’s wedding in Napier, January 2015. We had decided to go out for dinner at Mr D’s. It was a good choice because they gave us a fantastic night of wine and food and after a few more drinks in the bar next door we walked back along the beach to our hotel. It was a hot summer night and even at midnight the air was still warm. We sat on the beach, just out of sight of the road, and watched the ocean. We were there for a while when the moon came up over the horizon, a full, blood red and very bright moon. I decided that this might be the most romantic moment and so started to ask the question, Narelle said yes before I could finish.
H&N: Blue Carrot Catering were amazing. From planning the menu with us, making delicious beautiful food, to providing super friendly and helpful staff, we couldn’t recommend them enough! M&M: Tell us about the dress… N: One thing was for sure, I didn’t want to wear white. It’s just not my colour. Finding a wedding dress in a rich colour is a hard task, so I turned to the creative place that is Etsy, where I found Mermaid Bridal who were willing to hand dye the fabric and lace, then make it into one of their wonderful wedding dress designs. When the dress arrived it was beautiful, if a tiny bit big and long. I found Reah’s Clothing Alterations in Lower Hutt to make the necessary adjustments and we decided to change the back to a corset style. They did such an awesome job.
M&M: Tell us about your engagement ring… N: We wanted something a little bit different and we thought an emerald would be nice because it’s a vibrant green and Green is also Hadyn’s surname. So we decided on a square cut emerald set into a diamond pave art deco inspired setting.
M&M: Any special items on the menu or beverage list? H&N: We had three different beers made for the wedding. Narelle brewed “Blushing Brew” a raspberry gose with Tiamana Brewing. Hadyn made “Reception Ale” an American red ale with ParrotDog. And our friends at Garage Project (who also helped on the day with a set of taps) made us a champagne ale.
M&M: In 3 words describe your wedding style… H&N: Non-traditional, tropical, glam. M&M: What was the best planning advice you received? H&N: Get someone to coordinate on the day, you can’t do everything yourself — this is so true! M&M: How did you select your wedding venue? What was important to you? H&N: It was important to us to have a central Wellington venue so it was easy for our guests to attend. And it was necessary that we could select our own catering and drinks suppliers as we had some specific things we wanted.
M&M: Planning a wedding is all about a little bit of give and take, what was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? N: I really wanted a glamorous but laid back atmosphere at our wedding. I’m a designer so I planned the wedding set up down to the very last detail, from creating the all white furniture layout, hand painting the centerpieces gold and making a lighting plan, to selecting the kind of palm trees we wanted.
M&M: What music did you play? H&N: Aisle: I Like The Way This Is Going by Eels Signing: Lean On by Major Lazer Recessional: Howlin’ For You by The Black Keys
H: I really wanted a make your-own-taco bar and Blue Carrot came through with a blinder! One of our friends said he would be invoicing us for a new pair of pants after eating too much at the taco bar.
M&M: Tell us about a stand out vendor that provided amazing service…
M&M: In three words – describe your day… H&N: Love, laughter, and breaking the rules

HAMISH & MANDY 02 / 04 / 16
M&M: Tell us your engagement story… M&H: Very low-key, I had no idea that he had purchased a ring that week or was planning on popping the question, but it was obviously burning a hole in his pocket and he asked me while we were sitting on the couch as soon as our flatmates had gone out!
H&M: Larissa our photographer was great, very calm while being able to give the groomsmen the hurry along and make last-minute amendments to their attire! Larissa also put us onto a friend who bakes cakes from home and she made two amazing cakes that were delicious. She was so helpful leading up to and on the day.
M&M: Tell us about your engagement ring… H&M: White gold with 3 stones, chosen by Hamish.
M&M: Tell us about the dress… H&M: I was initially more excited about choosing a venue rather than a wedding dress. I had never thought about the kind of dress I would want to wear and pretty much left the decision making up to my friends when I was trying them on. The wedding dress shopping experience turned out to be quite fun after finding a few dresses from a designer that I liked in a shop in Wellington. I decided to make the trip up to Auckland to try more of them on. The one I chose was an easy decision, I loved the lace and full silk skirt.
M&M: In 3 words describe your wedding style… H&M: Classic, minimalistic, relaxed. M&M: How did you select your wedding venue? What was important to you? H&M: Originally we thought we would get married down South where our families live and where we both grew up. But ended up deciding to have a look at venues in the Wairarapa, a place we love visiting. We went over to Martinborough and looked at one venue only and that was Lacewood.
M&M: Tell us about the suit… H&M: Chosen by Hamish, couldn’t go past a classic navy and white shirt from Barkers.
When looking at venues online I knew that I wanted some accommodation onsite as well as having the ceremony and reception on site too. I was also hoping I could find somewhere that didn’t need a marquee for the reception. Lacewood provided all of this and the grounds for their ceremony, the accommodation in nearby cottages and large barn was perfect for the relaxed and informal wedding weekend we were after.
M&M: Planning a wedding is all about a little bit of give and take, what was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? H&M: Being able to stay onsite and have our friends there too, the different houses and cottages at the venue were perfect for this.
M&M: What music did you play? H&M: Aisle: John Mayers cover of Beyonce’s XO Recessional: Walking on a dream First Dance: Sam Smith
M&M: Did you have a honeymoon? Where did you go? H&M: We went on a trip to New York City and Mexico later in the year with friends.
M&M: Tell us about a stand out vendor that provided amazing service…
M&M: In three words – describe your day… H&M: Relaxed, fun, autumnal

NADINE & DAVID 29 / 01 / 2016
M&M: Tell us your engagement story…. D&N: We live in Amsterdam and we’d gone away to Prague. N: It turns out David had organised a whole day of stuff for us to do in Prague, which is why every time I suggested something to do in advance he said “No”. We were on the Charles Bridge at sundown and it was really beautiful. Then David started acting really weird. When I realised what he was doing I freaked out. But he told me to be quiet and talked me round to the idea of saying yes quite easily.
M&M: What did you include in your wedding that was uniquely you? D&N: A couple of things stand out in particular. Firstly, our vows and ceremony which we wrote in full with the support of our celebrant Jhan. Secondly, the involvement and inclusion of our family and friends was what helped make our wedding unique. During our ceremony we passed our rings around to everyone in attendance to hold and impart good vibes onto. Living on the other side of the world, this means a lot to us and something we both think about often.
D: Prague is a very beautiful and romantic city, even though the bridge was crowded and Nadine was initially in denial when I asked her, it eventually worked out for the best. In my mind I had prepared a speech for when we got on the bridge and it all came out as I wanted it to, but it was the reaction that caught me most by surprise it was classic Nadine. Basically I wasn’t going to take no for an answer…
M&M: Any special items on the menu or beverage list? D&N: Instead of just having a standard dessert or wedding cake, we had a dessert table that extended almost the length of one side of the venue with the majority of the desserts being gluten free. Nadine and our master-baker friends and family did a lot of baking. There were about ten different cakes including an impressive wedding cake made by Nadine’s mum, pavlovas, trifles, macaroons, a ‘cheesecake’ of cheeses, tiramisu, lemon yoyos, friands, brownies, and much more. Needless to say there was enough left over for the afterwedding barbeque. D: One of Nadine’s friends, when we first started `going out’ didn’t think we were going to last very long, so at the time she promised to bake a cake for every month we were together… 16 years later we got married - her cake in particular was a real show stopper.
M&M: What music did you play? D&N: In general we are not very traditional so we did a lot of things our way. This includes not walking down the aisle (we had our guests do it instead) so we didn’t have an aisle song. However during our registry signing some of our very talented friends performed the Age Pryor & Tessa Rain version of Singing in My Soul which was very special. Again, we didn’t do a traditional first dance, but at about midnight when Can’t Do Without You by Caribou came on we found each other and danced together in front of all of our friends and family, that was our organically chosen first dance song. It’s a great song that reminds us of dancing with each other, with our close friends, and summer festivals in Europe.
M&M: Did you have children at your wedding? If so, how did you accommodate them, any special considerations? D&N: We did have children of all ages at our wedding. We get that some people don’t want kids attending, but it wouldn’t have been the same without the kids there. As there were a few kids of matching ages, they made friends and entertained themselves (…a modern day teenage romance that played out on Instagram was even sparked at our wedding). We also had a lot of games and a big outdoor space for kids to play, and speeches were kept to a minimum to avoid boring the adults and kids alike.
M&M: Tell us about a stand out vendor that provided amazing service… D&N: All of our suppliers were great! Christine Grace from the Makara Community Hall was fantastic – very accommodating, practical, and experienced. She also runs an amazing B&B up the road from the venue where we stayed with friends and family before and after the wedding – it also meant we could walk to our wedding altogether which was one of the favourite parts of our day. The staff from Blue Carrot were all super accommodating to our guests – including taking over babysitting duties of a 4 month old so the parents could eat.
M&M: In three words – describe your day N: Us. Love-filled. Perfect. D: Honest. Special. Fun.

JEMMA & NICK 25 / 2 / 2017
M&M: Tell us your engagement story…. N&J: We went up to a good friend’s beach house in Paraparaumu for a birthday celebration with most of our closest friends. After a bit of a bender on the Friday night, Nick forced me to go walk our puppy with him on the beach. It was an awful grey and blustery day, as we were walking he turned to me and got down on one knee. Needless to say, the celebrations continued for the remainder of the weekend! It was one of the most fun weekends of our lives and so amazing having all our friends there with us.
pleasure to deal with. She is incredibly talented and also has fantastic taste and style. The flowers suited the day so perfectly and we had everyone commenting on them. We’ll be recommending both of these superstars to everyone we know! M&M: Tell us about the dress… J: I had an idea of something simple and fun that I wanted. Thankfully the amazing team at Sally Eagle shared my vision! It was a long simple skirt with a structured top underneath a backless, sequined t-shirt. M&M: Tell us about the suit… N: My suit was from Barkers, the service was amazing! I didn’t want a classic suit so I wore a beige jacket and navy trousers with a maroon pocket square and bow tie.
M&M: In 3 words descried your wedding style….. N&J: Relaxed, Festive, Fun. M&M: What was the best planning advice you received? N&J: Hahaha we didn’t take any advice and found Paula Bevege right away!
M&M: Any special items on the menu or beverage list? N&J: While we were having our photo’s taken, we had antipasti picnic boxes to share so that people would mingle and line their stomachs. We also had three food trucks serving dumplings, Argentinian beef and Indian pakoras and chicken and paneer on skewers. We also had family do a pig on a spit for late in the night. It was all a HUGE hit! And of course Mr Whippy!
M&M: What music did you play? N&J: Aisle: I walked down the aisle to my cousin singing “How can I tell you” by Cat Stevens. Recessional: Again, my cousins Adam and Sam Sherry, sung “These arms of mine” by Otis Redding. M&M: Tell us about a stand out vendor that provided amazing service. N&J: By far the best thing we did in my opinion was hire Paula as a wedding planner. Because of this, we didn’t deal with any of the vendors directly. We are both very busy people and it was very important to us that we would enjoy the lead up to the big day and not be stressed out in anyway. Paula delivered on this in every single way! At times I felt bad because I wasn’t doing anything! She has exceptional style and vision and carried out our ideas with perfection. We absolutely could not have survived without her. Not only during the lead up, but on the day of the wedding and the surrounding days, we realised just how worth her weight in gold she really is. Rhiannon at Rose Road Botanicals was another absolute
M&M: Planning a wedding is all about a little bit of give and take, what was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? N&J: We were unbelievably lucky that we wanted the exact same things and Paula was able to make it all happen. M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you? N&J: That it’s been the best wedding they’ve EVER been too – A great feeling hearing that! M&M: In three words – describe your day… N&J: BEST DAY EVER!

Guests were able to get involved with the mixing (which they highly enjoyed) and his interaction and enthusiasm was vivacious.
M&M: Did you have a honeymoon? Where did you go? M&P: Honeymooned for 5 days in beautiful Queenstown with time spent doing activities, wining‘n’ dining and relaxing. M&M: In three words – describe your day… M&P: Beautiful. Amazing. Unforgettable.

BEN & KATIE 11 / 2 / 2017
M&M: Tell us your engagement story… K: It was my 30th birthday and Ben gave me some instructions. Take Levi (our 2 year old son) to his Grannies house and get the train to Wellington, call me when you get there. I arrived at Wellington train station where I was given the next set of instructions; catch a taxi to Miss Fox where I was booked in to have my hair and makeup done. Once done being pampered I called Ben, and again a taxi collected me and took me to The Rydges Hotel where he met me. He told me we were going out for dinner. When we arrived at the restaurant I was greeted by friends and family. I couldn’t believe it! We had a lovely night. The next morning, we woke up and went out for breakfast and Ben said, we better get home to Levi. I was still buzzing from the night before. But instead of heading home we ended up at the AIRPORT and he handed me a boarding pass to Queenstown - our favorite place in the world! On our way home from a beautiful candlelit dinner, walking along the lakeside, Ben got down on one knee and proposed.
K&B: Mel Waite Photography. Wow… just wow. She photographed my sisters wedding last year and I just knew I had to have her for our wedding. We juggled dates just so we could have her. She is incredibly talented and she captured our wedding so perfectly. Every special moment, every laughter and every tear. Catherine McKinlay! This lady is AMAZING. Catherine decorated the marquee, did the table settings, and styled the ceremony. I showed her my pinterest board and she made it come to life, exceeding my expectations. I can’t thank her enough for creating such a magical setting for our special day. M&M: Tell us about the dress… K: Elegant and sleek. M&M: Did you have children at your wedding? If so, how did you accommodate them, any special considerations? K&B: Our 2 children Sunny and Levi aged 4 and 2. Also our niece Isla, aged 4. The girls were our beautiful flower girls and Levi did his best at being paige boy.
M&M: Tell us about your engagement ring… K: Ben chose the ring all by himself. Its from Michael Hill, 1.05 Carat of Diamonds in 14ct White Gold
M&M: Planning a wedding is all about a little bit of give and take, what was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? B: I wouldn’t compromise on the band, we had the Roger Fox Big Band. K: Catering, I insisted on using Clareville Bakery
M&M: In 3 words describe your wedding style? K&B: Romantic. Elegant. Magical M&M: What was the best planning advice you received? K&B: Having an outside wedding….make sure you have a backup plan and don’t worry about the weather, you cant do anything about it!
M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you? K&B: They couldn’t fault it. Perfect in every way and the band was a hit!

RACHAEL & PAUL 24 / 2 / 2017
First Dance: “A Sky Full of Stars” by Coldplay Signing of Register: “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran
M&M: Tell us your engagement story… R&P: Paul said lets go to Sydney for Easter 2016. We stayed at the QT Hotel in the CBD and Paul had booked a lunch at Quay Restaurant. We shared a bottle of our favourite champagne (Laurent Perrier Rose) down at the Quay with the Sydney Harbour Bridge to our left and the Opera House to our right. Just as we were about to go in for our degustation lunch Paul popped the question. It was very surreal and exciting – we had the most wonderful lunch and afternoon!
M&M: Tell us about a stand out vendor that provided amazing service…. R&P: Mel Halford was our florist and such an amazing help to me. The flowers on the day were above and beyond. I’ve honestly never seen such beautiful flowers in my life. M&M: What did you include in your wedding that was uniquely you? R&P: Paul built the arch that we were married under and we have it in our garden now. It was incredibly romantic.
M&M: Tell us about your engagement ring…. R&P: We designed it together with The Village Goldsmith. It is a beautiful classic design, solitaire 2 carat diamond – it’s fair to say I’m a very lucky girl.
M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you? R&P: Honestly this is going to sound a little show off – but so many said it was the best wedding they had been too! Venue, setting, food, alcohol, flowers, the band and both families and friends gelled, it was the whole package. And of course that we couldn’t have possibly had a better day weather wise. It was a picture perfect, not a breath of wind and the most divine sunset. Even the staff were taking photos. Everyone on the day was saying the gods are certainly smiling on us – and given the Wellington summer this year they certainly were.
M&M: In 3 words describe your wedding style… R&P: Classic, Chic, Traditional M&M: What was the best planning advice you received? R&P: A lot of people said this, but it doesn’t make it any less true – don’t sweat the small stuff. M&M: How did you select your wedding venue? What was important to you? R&P: We loved Boomrock obviously because of its breathtaking views and that we could be married, have the ceremony and photos all in one place. We are passionate about our wine and wanted somewhere where we could choose what wines we have on the day. Anyone close to us knows we are major foodies and the Boomrock chef Mark Hartstonge had an excellent reputation and didn’t disappoint – all the food was absolutely outstanding. We wanted an intimate wedding and Boomrock just ticked all the boxes.
M&M: Did you have a honeymoon? R&P: We spent 8 nights at the Intercontinental Hotel, Da Nang, Vietnam – it was voted the best Resort in the world in 2016. It didn’t disappoint and we really had the time of our lives at this world class resort. Very relaxing and very indulgent! M&M: In three words – describe your day… R&P: I know this is a bit cheesy and cliché but it really was the BEST DAY EVER!
M&M: What music did you play? R&P: Aisle: “The Promise” by Tracy Chapman Recessional : “On Top of the World” by Imagine Dragons

ROLLING WITH JONO Only a few years ago if anyone had asked if you’d like to watch their wedding video, you would have most certainly faked an illness, had an urgent meeting you had to attend or ran for your life to avoid the long and painful torture.
showing people how they created their films. With the help of Jason Naylor of We Do Photography, who introduced me to one of his wedding couples, I decided to give it a go and shoot my first wedding film, that was just over 5 years ago.
But a new guard of innovative wedding videographers has emerged and there is one man leading the way. When I first meet Jono Tucker 5 years ago, he had a great idea of developing his already very successful photography career into something more memorable, something that evoked more emotion and that idea was to make wedding films.
M&M: How would you describe your style? JT: That’s a tough one, I’d say it’s a pretty honest narrative style, focussed on the story of a wedding day. The aim is to not manufacture the moments of a wedding day, but just document it and then combine the best parts into a wedding video that people actually want to watch. My wedding films are like a time capsule, so that when you look back in a few years you’ll feel like you’re actually there in the moment.
Jono Tucker is a natural storyteller, creating films that are beautifully crafted from start to finish. While his technical skills are undeniable, it’s his ability to capture the important moments that will transport you back to your special day. A warning, when watching - be armed with tissues.
M&M: What do you love most about weddings? JT: My last wedding I had this season was the perfect example where the speeches were just the absolute best. It’s funny how when people are given a microphone they take that chance to open up and share the love. It’s a chance to openly and publicly declare their love and gratitude to their family.
The old cliché of “the day went so fast” is so true and today with friends and family spread all over the world it has become increasing important to capture those moments so you can experience them in the months and years afterwards. A wedding day is a roller coaster of emotions and Jono’s films certainly tell the full story.
M&M: How would spend your ideal day off? JT: Running my own small business can sometimes be tricky to get a proper day off, so my ideal day would start with a fantastic home cooked breakfast, followed by a mountain bike ride around Makara Peak, and then a family outing where I get to make some memories with my wife and daughter. Not surprisingly my camera wouldn’t be far away so I could capture the memories.
This genuinely lovely guy is professional, creative and super talented, I can assure you, you will love working with him. After the dust has settled, your honeymoon is over and your wedding is a distant memory, you will be so pleased you have the most amazing film, starring YOU, to share with anyone that was not able attend your wedding, friends on the other side of the world and even your future generations. You’ll laugh, love and maybe even cry as you experience it all again on film.
M&M: Aside from family and friends, list three things you can’t live without? JT: Hmm, that’s tricky. It sounds bad, but my iPhone would be up there, mainly because I can do so many things with it, both personally and also keeping the business running. It’s no secret that I love my gadgets. Second would be my camera, and thirdly my mountain bike.
Today we take Jono from behind the camera and put the spotlight on him: M&M: What made you want to be a wedding videographer? JT: When I first saw the new style of cinematic wedding films I thought they looked incredible, and I instantly knew I wanted to give it a go. Even though I’d never shot one at the time, I knew I could create something in that style and I had most of the gear that I needed. When I filmed my first wedding and saw the emotional reaction from the couple when they watched their film, I knew it was something I wanted to do more of. I had never seen a photo album create that sort of emotional reaction before.
M&M: Where would we usually find you on Sunday morning? JT: Currently my Sunday mornings revolve around dad time, so making time for my daughter Isabelle. Then we’d be whipping up bacon and eggs for brunch, while switching between The Wiggles and my own music on Spotify. M&M: Your favourite Wellington coffee spot? And favourite Wellington eats, café, or restaurant. JT: We have a pretty decent coffee machine and grinder at home, so my favourite Wellington coffee spot would be the Havana headquarters on Tory St to buy some coffee beans to take home. When my wife Jen and I want to head out for dinner we love getting down to Havana restaurant on Wigan St, or perhaps lunch at Chow and 2-for-1 on Mondays.
M&M: Tell us about the path to get there… JT: I originally started in the wedding industry as a photographer, but prior to that had done a little video work filming motorsports for TV. Then I stumbled across a video production company in Canada who were sharing tutorials on how to shoot wedding videos using DSLR’s. Their work was incredible and they were
