WILD AT HEART Martine and Renze – 25th February 2012 Article by Johanna Osborne QUESTION: WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN TWO CREATIVE PEOPLE WHO WORK IN THE FILM INDUSTRY DECIDE TO TIE THE KNOT? ANSWER: A UNIQUE, TOTALLY FUN WEDDING THAT COULD DOUBLE AS THE STAGE FOR A ROMANTIC MOVIE. THE EVENT WHICH UNFOLDED ON THIS MOST SIGNIFICANT SUMMER’S DAY SHOWCASED MARTINE AND RENZE’S JOIE DE VIVRE, LOVE OF A GOOD PARTY AND KNACK FOR DOING THINGS THEIR WAY WITH THE CORE FOCUS FIRMLY REMAINING ON THEIR NEAREST AND DEAREST THROUGHOUT.

HOW WE DID IT BLOOMS: Moonflower

Nothing about the 25th February 2012 was ordinary, nor was it ever meant to be, for Martine and Renze describe themselves as “creative and stubborn”. Martine explains; “the word unique was surely invented to describe my husband! I’m really glad we just stuck to who we are as individuals and as a pair, and it all worked out beautifully. Most important to get right was that it was our wedding, our way. We figured out the big picture together, made a rough sketch of the ceremony itself, and then I let loose on decorating and details.”

So what made this day so unique? Let us count the ways...

Suit – Groom wore his father’s suit, groomsman wore Rembrandt suits

Stunning bride Martine drove herself and her “best woman” Megan to the ceremony in “Belladonna” - a glossy black 1967 Triumph Herald Coupe which Renze had lovingly been restoring, and managed to complete in the nick of time. However a small glitch provided Martine and Renze with one of many hilarious anecdotes of the day; “The night before the wedding we left Belladonna safe inside the venue, as the cottage Martine was getting ready in on the day was right next door. Unfortunately she didn’t flick the lights off properly and in the morning the battery was flat, so our tiny female MC Lindsay and Martine had to push start her – on the wedding day!”

SETTING: Ceremony – The couple’s home in Featherston Reception – Tauherenikau Race Course

Martine and Renze held their wedding ceremony at their own home in rural Featherston, majestically overlooking the grand lake Wairarapa. 100 metres of bunting, red beach umbrellas and straw bale seating set the tone for the relaxed, rustic nuptials. The couple explain; “Our home is our peaceful haven and gives us somewhere to be creative. It was really special to share it with everyone on the day, and now we have the great memories there from the wedding as well.” The reception that followed at Tauherenikau Race Course was very much like “a country day out at the races”. During dinner Martine and Renze sat at a round table with their “best people” and respective partners in the centre of the room, which meant they were nicely nestled in amongst their jovial guests. “We loved all of it!” they delightedly state.

Staying true to their individualistic approach, Martine and Renze opted not to serve cake, but instead an impressive stack of cheeses from Moore Wilsons, which proved to be a big hit with everyone. The tasty supply was so plentiful the happy couple were still enjoying delicious morsels 3 weeks later. In another very cool twist, Martine was the one that proposed to Renze. She shares; “Actually, in the end I proposed! Renze had asked twice; first time after 2 months together over a batch of scones, and I still am not sure if he was serious or not. Second time, I just didn’t think we were ready, and said “probably”. So then he said I would have to ask him. After waiting a year, I realised I really was going to have to, so I asked him on New Year’s Eve, in the last few minutes of a leap year!” Needless to say, the happy groom accepted his proposal.

The party was fuelled by delicious food served by Zane Saba ‘Chef on Demand’, who did most of the catering. A decadent dessert buffet by Martine and Renze’s favourite French Cafe, Cafe Mirabelle of Carterton, followed the mouth-watering meal.

Renze added something borrowed and very sentimental to the occasion by wearing a beautiful cream seersucker suit, which his own father had worn on his wedding day when he married Renze’s mother many years ago. 5

and the warm-heartedness that defines Martine and Renze’s celebration shines through in both their story and photographs. Martine goes on to share one of her favourite memories; “After the reception I’ll never forget walking back together, otherworldly in our white outfits, in the dark to the cottage we were staying at. It was about 20 minutes through the trees of the Racetrack grounds and up a country lane, on a clear still night.”

Mel Waite captured the stunning wedding in its full glory and the photos are a true credit to her amazing work. Martine and Renze agree; “Mel did a great job, and was a pleasure to have around on the day.” Rebecca at Moonflower in Greytown oversaw the beautiful buttonholes and bouquets. As per Martine’s wishes, she incorporated an herbal theme and included rosemary and ivy, which was used throughout to symbolise the masculine & feminine.

Yes, when Martine and Renze got married there were several points of beautiful difference, which made their day all the more memorable.

Martine and Renze have no regrets when looking back at how their day went. In fact, they are thrilled with the results and the way the party spanned for several days with jovial guests coming back to Martine and Renze’s home the following day for a BBQ and left-over desserts. It was a true weekend of celebration and bonding of nearest and dearest,

The very special country festivities still has the lucky 75 guests in attendance talking about that wonderfully romantic weekend in the Wairarapa, when Martine and Renze said “I do”. 6

Which brings me to ask the question, what would your wedding be like if you eloped? Just like the quote on the Rolex Carrie gave to Big in Sex and The City 2, ‘Me and You, Just us two’ would your priorities change, only thinking of 2 people? I personally think weddings are all about celebrating with your family and closest friends. I have had it said to me many times and experienced it myself, the overwhelming feeling of seeing everyone who means something to you in one room really is amazing. It is a chance for both families to spend time together and to have the different branches of your life come together to witness your love and commitment to each other. What could be better?

I have met many couples in my 13 years in the wedding industry and I do sometimes worry that because weddings are so fashionable, are we losing sight of what the day is all about? Is it about the marriage or the wedding? With a hectic schedule leading up to your wedding day, it is often not until you are facing the love of your life and remember what the day is all about, then all of a sudden things are back in perspective. Suddenly all the stress of organising a wedding is gone, and you will ask yourself “why was I so worried about all the little things?” So my advice to you when planning your day is to remember it really is about ‘the two of you’.

A CHANCE ENCOUNTER Steve and Annette – 21st January 2012 Article by Johanna Osborne THERE IS A SAYING THAT LOVE FINDS YOU WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT. AND IN STEVE AND ANNETTE’S CASE, THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. WHEN STEVE ARRANGED TO INTERVIEW ANNETTE FOR A JOB, HE GOT A LOT MORE THAN HE BARGAINED FOR. THE UNSUSPECTING GENTLEMAN HAD NO IDEA HE WAS ABOUT TO LAY EYES ON HIS FUTURE WIFE! A HAPPY COINCIDENCE BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER, AND THEIR SHARED INTERESTS AND VIEWS HAVE LAID THE FOUNDATION FOR THEIR FUTURE.

Annette and Steve are a stylish couple who love enjoying the good things in life with their close friends and family; “We are both real foodies, and this seems to sneak into all our big moments.”

And as part-owner of Wellington’s much adored Logan Brown restaurant, it was little wonder that Steve took over the careful menu design for the day. With such a crucial part of the planning in expert hands, this allowed Annette to focus on all the trimmings - making the wedding a veritable feast for all the senses. The happy bride explains; “Steve was planning such an amazing wedding dinner, so I really wanted to create a really nice, inviting space to enjoy it in.”

So Annette got to work on various small projects to add her unique touch. And one of these in particular made for quite the humorous anecdote; “We made lots of bunting to decorate the marquee. LOTS. It took weeks to make. We had a neat little production line going, I’d do the cutting and sewing, and Steve trimmed them and turned them inside out. It was a fun little task to do together, and it made me smile on the day to remember Steve up to his elbows in pink triangles – so manly!!!”

the funny wedding speeches. It was all so special!” Fineline photography’s lens captured all these moments in action, and the images portray the emotion and joy of the day perfectly.

The vivacious couple opted for a small, intimate and family-orientated wedding, and chose to hold it at Steve’s parents’ stunning estate in Silverstream; “Bas and Judy’s place has always been the centre of all the Logan family celebrations, so it just felt right. “

Many family and friends travelled from overseas to be present, and everyone had a fantastic time throughout the festivities. The Amazing Travelling Photobooth once again ensured everyone got to capture a unique moment in time in the most entertaining of ways. And bands Gypsologie and Joosey Fruit saw to it that there was fantastic live entertainment during both the reception and party afterwards. Everyone had a ball.

The pretty bride wore a lovely dress purchased in the UK, and the talented Robyn Cliffe Couturiére assisted with alterations and “some jooshing”. Annette was very pleased with the result; “Robyn Cliffe Couturiére were great!” The groom wore a Working Style suit and managed to wow his adoring bride without much effort. The beautiful makeup on the day was a credit to the brilliant Hil Cook.

Having spent as much time as possible with lingering friends and family in the weeks post-wedding, Steve and Annette are yet to embark on their honeymoon. With exciting travel on the cards in the very near future, there is obviously only one other thing left to do. What might that be, you ask? Why, “live happily ever after of course”, the joyful couple declares! We will certainly toast to that! Long live Steve and Annette!

Flowers Manuela delivered the lovely flowers, which were a perfect complement to the overall chic yet relaxed mood of the wedding celebrations. The day was jovial and jam-packed with lots of special moments. Rebecca and Chris planned their beautiful New Zealand wedding from Australia where they currently live. Being organised and relying on excellent communication was therefore instrumental in pulling this stunning event together. And with the immense help and support from Rebecca’s Wellington based parents things got nicely underway. Rebecca and Chris explain; “For us it was all about ensuring our guests had the best time possible, so a lot of thought went into the food, alcohol and entertainment. It was a particular focus of ours because so many people were travelling long distances to attend.”

And it comes as no surprise that the couple picked a true “dream team” when deciding on whose services to enlist; “We had a lot of help from all of our suppliers – every single one of them did a fantastic job and were so, so helpful and accommodating!”

Opting to use the ever popular Simply Food for catering was a decision Rebecca and Chris were very happy with; “Simply Food were outstanding, well organised and the food was delicious.”

real. It was very special walking alongside my dad and seeing how proud he was, and then seeing Chris for the first time and him seeing me. There’s nothing else like it really.”

Rebecca and Chris also could not rate Paula Bevege Events any higher; “Katie and Paula were wonderfully helpful. At the rehearsal and on the day itself they were making sure everything was timed perfectly, and the flowers were gorgeous.”

No wedding is complete without a funny tale and Rebecca and Chris’ is no exception. Rebecca’s doting father ended up with a full glass of red wine all over his crisp white shirt during the festivities – but luckily this happened well into the night, by which point it was funny. We think this can only mean one thing – good fortune for the whole family. And there was plenty more humour too with the best man planking in Erskine’s chapel, all caught on camera!

The glowing couple were lucky enough to have the incredibly talented Kate MacPherson photograph their wedding. They share; “Kate was just amazing, so patient and lovely to be around. She really made everyone feel so relaxed in front of the camera, and the photos are stunning.” We couldn’t agree more! Empire classic cars had the all important job of escorting the beautiful bridal party to the venue. Upon their arrival, guests gasped in admiration at Rebecca in her lovely custom-made gown, and the groom looking handsome in Hugo Boss. The bridesmaids wore pretty Alannah Hill dresses, and the groomsmen were well looked after by the ever reliable Frank Casey Formal Suit Hire. The award winning Verity Griffiths oversaw both the bride’s hair and makeup, as well as the pretty bridesmaids’ make up. Bouy hairdressing took care of the bridesmaids hairstyles and did a magnificent job.

Rebecca and Chris are a fun and easygoing couple who list attending live music and stand-up comedy gigs, going to the beach, eating out and travelling as some of the many things they love to do together. But top of their list of shared passions is their much loved cat Alfie! The pair honeymooned in Mexico, New York, LA and Las Vegas, and are now ready to see where life takes them. A move back to Rebecca’s home country New Zealand one day is not out of the question. Looking back Rebecca and Chris couldn’t be happier with their flawless wedding day: “I don’t think we would change a thing. We really did have the most perfect day. Everything went according to plan, nothing went wrong and everyone had a fantastic time. Even the Wellington weather Gods turned it on for us!”

Rebecca joyfully adds; “Everyone who had a part to play put in 100%, and I think this is one of the main reasons the day was so successful.” What was the most special moment of the day? The radiant bride doesn’t hesitate; “When I was walking down the aisle. It’s that moment when all of your daydreams, excitement and planning come to a head and it all becomes

FOREVER SWEET 16 Renee and Jared – 14th January 2012 Article by Johanna Osborne “JARED AND I STARTED DATING AT SCHOOL AS 16 YEAR OLDS, AND DECIDED THAT IT WAS ONLY RIGHT TO GET MARRIED AT RATHKEALE COLLEGE WHERE IT ALL BEGAN.” AND SO THEY DID. WITH HISTORY LEADING THEM FULL CIRCLE BACK TO WHERE THEIR LOVE FIRST BLOSSOMED, IT WAS INEVITABLE THAT THIS WEDDING WAS GOING TO BE QUITE THE ROMANTIC EVENT!

With a gorgeous vintage theme in mind, the wedding planned itself seamlessly around Renee’s clear vision, with the help of her much loved mother’s resourceful assistance. Renee describes collecting the gorgeous vintage tableware as one of her favourite parts of the planning process; “We started our collection off with some of our mothers’, grandmothers’ and great grandmothers’ cups and saucers. It was so special to have these items as part of our wedding.” Renee’s mother was also responsible in sourcing some of the most important venue decorations. Renee says “I had mentioned to my Mum the possibility of having vintage bird cages on the tables. The next day she rang me to say that she had 12 vintage bird cages on hold at a local shop. This is just one example of many where my mother went above and beyond to make our day amazing!”

The laid back groom’s only request was; “To have his huge stock trucks drive the bridesmaids right up to the ceremony.” And lucky for Jared, who is co-owner of Martinborough Transport, Rathkeale College granted this humble wish. In turn this masculine touch gave the romantic wedding, with its many soft pastel colours, a slight edge. Another such contrast, Renee being driven to the ceremony by her father, in her late grandfather’s Holden Kingswood Ute!

La Femme

Rathkeale College was one of the big stars on the big day due to its beautiful grounds, which allowed for the impressive photos to be shot on site without the bridal party having to leave the venue. With stunning backdrops such as the rose gardens, a Greek theatre, and bush walks on offer, skilled photographer Sharisse Eberlein had plenty to work with, and the images truly captured the old school glamour of the day. “Incredible” is the first word Renee and Jared use when describing Sharisse’s work.

Renee looked picture perfect in her ivory lace strapless gown with a full length veil. The bridesmaids wore floor length Grecian-style dresses in a most complimentary lilac shade. Hil Cook and her expert team unsurprisingly made the girls look amazing. No one could take their eyes off the beautiful bride and her beaming bridesmaids.

In terms of entertainment, there was quite an array; “Our guests very much enjoyed their experience with The Amazing Travelling Photo Booth”, the couple shares. La Femme provided the live entertainment, and to add an extra touch of fun, guests were given lolly bags and encouraged to fill them with their favourite sweets at the vintage themed candy bar. A real delight for all, and a wonderful way for guests to interact by unleashing their inner child.

Renee carried a full posy of gorgeous antique roses from the Piccadilly Flower Company, with the bridesmaids toting smaller versions of the bride’s flowers. The groomsmen were decked out by Wilkins Formal wear in offwhite suits with ivory ties and shoes, which once again added very nicely to the theme of the day. Much to Renee’s pleasure, the Piccadilly Flower Company further assisted in creating the final vintage touches that were so important to her - such as the classic ribbons tied to the top of the French bird cages, along with the candles that were placed inside them. Every detail was carefully thought out and planned, and the results certainly spoke for themselves. And continue to do so in the pretty images!

The wedding day was a huge success with Renee and Jared both over the moon with how wonderfully everything came together; “We just wish we could go back and relive the whole day again and again!” The newlyweds have recently moved into their new marital home and still have an exciting American honeymoon to look forward to. With destinations such as Florida’s Disney World and Las Vegas on the itinerary, it looks like after 9 years together they are only just getting started! May the joy, fun and laughter that brought them this far continue to guide them along their way always.

Article by Johanna Osborne Fast forward a little and Paula has now been involved in the wedding industry for over 12 years, and owns and operates her own business. Formerly known as Belle Vie and now trading as Paula Bevege Events, Paula has guided hundreds of brides, from start to finish, through the most precious journey of their lives. With a strong passion for decorating and entertaining, Paula together with her sister Katie Bevege (a skilled florist amongst other things), have forged a niche in the industry, as event stylists and wedding planners.

SOME PEOPLE ARE BORN CREATIVE. IT’S IN THEIR BLOOD. GOOD TASTE AND STYLE COMES NATURALLY, WHILST OTHERS STOP AND STARE IN ADMIRATION. PAULA BEVEGE IS ONE OF THESE LUCKY AND TALENTED INDIVIDUALS. There was never really any doubt that Paula would follow in the footsteps of those that shaped her earliest childhood memories; “My passion for flowers and weddings came from the hours spent with my great aunt as a child. She was an amazing florist, cake decorator and president of the NZ Rose society. Saturdays were my favourite day, racing from wedding to wedding to see the bride coming out of the church. Not much has changed!”

And that is how I met Paula. Our fateful encounter occurred long ago, when I was planning my own wedding. I recognised immediately that I needed someone to help me tick all the boxes and make sure I was on the right track. Not because I’m disorganised, but because I am a perfectionist and I like to have everything under control. Especially for something as precious as my very own once-in-a-lifetime wedding, I knew I needed an expert to be on my side and have my back. I was referred to Paula through word of mouth; people simply raved about her. I was a bit nervous and really didn’t know what to expect- I was about to meet a stranger and ask her to help me with the most personal and meaningful event of my life! But from the minute Paula sat me down in a tastefully decorated room, complete with gorgeous mock table set-up and decorations a-plenty, and poured me a cold Pellegrino and a crisp glass of wine, I knew I was in good hands. Breathing a sigh of relief I listened to Paula tell me she would do as

And when I was jittering through my big speech I glanced towards the back of the room and there she was, giving me an encouraging smile and nod... I simply couldn’t have done it without her. TWO PEAS IN A POD Marissa and Dominic – 17th March 2012 Article by Johanna Osborne IF IT’S A BIG TRADITIONAL WEDDING, PACKED WITH ALL THE TRIMMINGS AND OODLES OF LOVE THAT YOUR HEART DESIRES, THEN MARISSA AND DOMINIC’S IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW IT’S DONE. Having met on a blind date that initially didn’t go so well, Dominic was quick to win Marissa over on their second meeting. The pair has been inseparable ever since and even play for the same football club. “We’ve been described as two peas in a pod. Dominic is truly my best friend and we have so much in common, we have the same sense of humour and we laugh a lot” shares Marissa about her brand new husband. Even when asked who was the most help during the planning process, Marissa immediately cites Dominic, followed closely by both sets of wonderful parents.

Marissa and Dominic wanted their wedding to be elegant, soft and romantic. The gorgeous tones of lavender and soft pink in the bridesmaid’s dresses were echoed in the invitations and reception decor. Simply Food oversaw the delicious offerings on the day. To begin, guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and champagne whilst the bridal party had their photos taken. Marissa explains; “We are quite traditional about certain things and were adamant about having a sit down dinner to follow at the reception.” Simply Food once again did not disappoint; “All the food and service provided by Simply Food was outstanding” the couple says happily.

overnight bag with her; “When I left the Hotel the next morning I had to wear Dominic’s shorts and t-shirt, with no shoes. I had a wedding dress in one arm and a bouquet and gold shoes in the other. My exit was a slightly less glamorous than my entrance to the Hotel!”

It was Erskine’s honour to host this most special occasion, one of its last before closure. The bride arrived a fashionable half hour late, in one of two gorgeous 1955 Rolls-Royce Silver Clouds from Prestige Cars, which had the honour of bringing Marissa and her 5 bridesmaids to the service held upstairs in the beautiful chapel.

The couple reflects that keeping a spreadsheet detailing everything they had organised was a huge help in the planning process; “It assisted with our budgeting and what we still had to organise.” The day was a huge success, with the Marissa and Dom thrilled with how it all turned out. Marissa goes on; “The only thing I would change would be to have started planning a few months earlier than we did, at the end there was just so much to organise and not so much time! Having said that, I wouldn’t change anything about the day at all, it was perfect. It was even a beautiful sunny day in Wellington!”

The day was filled with special moments a-plenty, and the warmth and love shared within this big family brims out even from the still-frames of this day. One particular highlight for the blushing bride was Dominic’s speech, when he thanked his parents for raising him to be a man that somebody as lovely as Marissa would choose to fall in love with.

With the couple on an adventurous American honeymoon as we go to print, and “hopefully the pitter patter of tiny feet in the not too distant future”, Marissa and Dominic can look towards the rest of their lives with great excitement, happiness and of course the laughter they so love to share.

The clearly enraptured couple stayed at the Museum Hotel on their wedding night. Marissa shares that in the whirlwind of everything that was going on when she left her parents’ house to go to the chapel, she forgot to take her 57
