THE SMALLEST OF GUESTS Article by Johanna Osborne
course) was made up of just children, with no bridesmaids or groomsmen at all. It can be done, it’s different and it’s wonderful.
I VIVIDLY RECALL THE GUEST LIST AT MY WEDDING BEING A BIG DEAL. WHO TO INVITE, WHO TO LEAVE OFF ONCE THE LIST GOT TOO LONG AND THE VENUE TOO SMALL, AND WHERE TO SEAT EVERYONE. GOSH IT WAS STRESSFUL! BUT ONE THING WAS FOR SURE, THE LITTLEST GUESTS WEREN’T GOING TO BE LEFT OFF. I ENCOUNTERED A BIT OF EYE-ROLLING FROM PEOPLE WHENEVER I SAID THAT CHILDREN WERE “ABSOLUTELY INVITED”, AND MANY ASKED ME WHY ON EARTH I’D DO SOMETHING SILLY LIKE THAT.
Yes, children - especially babies - do cry. And they can be annoying. But mostly for the parents, and not so much for the host. If the Mum and Dad are game to bring them, then really it’s them we need to help and reward. And there are a few ways of making sure kids are entertained and have fun – and from experience a happy child is a good child. A good way to eliminate any issues is to assign tasks to as many children as possible. At the ceremony, children can act as ushers, hand out programs, circulate mass books, or distribute packets of rice or rose petals. At the reception, kids can manage a guest book or pass out favours in a basket or on a tray. Children can also perform a group reading either in the church or the reception. A kids table at the reception is always a good idea, with great food, fast service, activities and games. If a separate room is available, activities including board games and movies are also an option. Invite a children’s entertainer or make it a real “Kids’ Club”, and hire insured childcare providers to act as supervisors for the day who set up themed activities. The parents will love you forever!
Whilst I appreciate people’s reservations on such matters, to me it was a no-brainer. Weddings are ingrained in my own childhood memory as being the happiest, most fun and exciting events of all, and it was always such a highlight and massive treat to wear a pretty gown and attend such a fabulous party. I know what it feels like to be a child, and I don’t intend to ever forget. To me weddings have always been about family, togetherness and celebrating life – and obviously a huge ingredient in that is children! I wanted the hustle and bustle, kids running around the reception, playing tag, hiding under tables and eating cake. I wanted to be escorted up the aisle by flower girls scattering rose petals on the way. Sadly I had none at my disposal back then, so I had 2 handsome candle-holding, ring-bearing young boys instead. I thought they looked so swish in their little suits and cravattes (I gave up on the idea of forcing them to wear a pretty frock!) and I loved having them as part of the ceremony, and equally loved having them at the party later on. I recall my 8 year old nephew Yannik doing some impressive impromptu singing and dancing to Queen at 10pm, much to everyone’s dance floor delight. It was a party and everyone was invited! My little nephew Orlando was all of 6 months old at our wedding, but I recall everyone fighting to sit next to him, and one of my favourite photos of the day was the one of my parents with him. It would not have been the same without him there
Of course child-free weddings are also nice. I have been to a few very formal ones and it was understandable that it might be better not to have kids there wreaking havoc. They were also wonderful, and it is entirely up to personal choice what might suit a couple best at their special celebration. Whatever path you choose, it’s your decision and it will be the right one. Just remember to make it clear early on, so that parents with children can make arrangements. And if you do opt to go the ‘children are welcome way’, then enjoy the ride. It will make for colourful moments and memories, not to mention some fantastic photos! From experience the smallest of guests make the biggest of impacts!
I know I’m not alone with these thoughts as I have attended plenty of weddings where children were featured heavily. Our Editor Paula Bevege had a bevy of gorgeous children of varying ages accompany her up the aisle, and it made for absolutely stunning photos. I have attended several weddings where the whole bridal party (apart from the bride and groom of

TWO HEARTS Rebecca & Harvey – March 22nd 2013 Article by Johanna Osborne WHEN SOMEONE FROM THE EXPERT TEAM GETS MARRIED YOU KNOW IT’S GOING TO BE GOOD. YOU SEE, REBECCA CONNOR HAS ATTENDED HUNDREDS OF WEDDINGS, CALMED MANY NERVES, SHOOSHED UP PLENTY OF PRETTY BRIDES AND BESTILLED MANY A BEATING HEART. ARMED WITH HER EXPERT MAKE UP, LOVELY MANNER AND PROFESSIONAL APPROACH IT’S USUALLY REBECCA WHO MAKES THE DAY FOR SO MANY BRIDES. BUT ON THIS DAY THE ROLES WERE REVERSED, AND ONE OF WELLINGTON’S FINEST MAKE-UP ARTISTS WAS NOT ON DUTY, AND INSTEAD SHE STEPPED INTO THE SHOES OF THE BRIDE, AND LET US TELL YOU, SHE WAS QUITE POSSIBLY ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WE’VE EVER LAID EYES ON! It is with enormous pleasure we document a little part of Rebecca and Harvey’s amazing wedding day. The words perfect, picturesque and romantic don’t really do it justice. Looking absolutely spectacular in her handmade Helen Forster design, Rebecca took everyone’s breath away. The talented Candy Capco was on hand to shoot the dream-like images of this perfect day, which included a scenic celebration with all the trimmings at the divine Brackenridge Country Retreat in Martinborough.
HOW WE DID IT CAPTURE: Candy Capco
CUISINE:
The official part of the day was a highlight for both Rebecca and Harvey; “The ceremony felt like magic. Having all of your friends and family around you at once – it’s just such a special day.” But that is not to say it was all about formalities, in fact this could not be further from the truth with Rebecca sharing that “fun” was very much on the agenda for the entire weekend; “We didn’t want it to be too stiff or serious, and ensured this by incorporating little games along the way, including a quiz about us, a meat raffle giveaway (which one of the only vegetarians won!) and we played the shoe game. With the seating plan we had tables of 20, guests were designated a table and they could sit anywhere they wanted at that table!” It was certainly a weekend of frivolity with guests enjoying themselves immensely, and there being a joyous atmosphere all round. white knuckle moment for those in attendance occurred when a sheep chose to jump the fence right at the very moment Rebecca was making her grand entrance down the aisle. Everyone held their breath for a short moment, hoping it would not try and steal the bride’s thunder. Thankfully the rogue invader disappeared as quickly as he appeared, and later this wee story provided fuel for more good cheer.
the beautiful bride, the entire bridal party and extended family. No wonder everyone looked so amazing! Both Rebecca and Harvey are self proclaimed proud Wellingtonians, who love everything about our beautiful city- including owning their own businesses. Harvey operates Wellington based commercial cleaning company CM Office Services, and Rebecca operates the successful and popular Penny Rose Makeup and Hair Boutique as well as Rebecca Connor Mobile Styling. The couple love what they do, and even share an office together!
The wedding weekend certainly turned out to be the entertaining affair Rebecca and Harvey had so much hoped it would be, and many loved ones had a helping hand in creating this marvellous celebration. Sister Melissa, Mum Janet, mother-in-law Annie and father-in-law Ian all oversaw important tasks ranging from hens’ night planning to florist duties, creating the dessert table, putting on a divine BBQ for friends and family, as well as sourcing the highly praised wine selection. Simply put, Rebecca calls them her “angels”. Possibly most touching of all was that Rebecca’s father picked her up in his red Dodge Chrysler, which has been his pride and joy since he was 17 years old; “It’s still as shiny and new as ever!” A very significant journey for father and daughter to share on her special day, and something that meant a great deal to both.
Rebecca and Harvey are evidence that real-life fairytales do exist. These two really are the quintessential soulmates; “We were engaged after 5 months and married after 2 years. We believe in fate and love and at first sight. We plan to continue growing together through life and once a fortnight we go for a date night and a movie night too. We truly are best friends and love to laugh at everything.” As if that wasn’t dreamy enough, their new house in Mt Victoria and Jack Russell Walnut complete the picture. We wish them a lifetime of love and magic!
And whilst Rebecca was off-duty on her wedding day, her amazing team from Penny Rose were certainly not laying idle – the entire Penny Rose makeup and hair team completed 18 ladies for the wedding, including

FIELD OF DREAMS – SUDBURY Article by Johanna Osborne Legend long tells of the calming effect of horses on people and the undying loyalty and kinship between man and horse. Perhaps this partly explains the invisible magical radar that surrounds Sudbury and touches everyone who enters its parameter.
WHEN YOU BEGIN THE QUEST FOR THE VENUE THAT WILL HOST THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY OF YOUR LIFE, THE WORDS SPECIAL, UNIQUE AND MAGICAL CERTAINLY MAKE THE LIST. BUT OFTEN IT’S HARD TO FIND ANYTHING THAT EVEN HOLDS A CANDLE TO WHAT WE HAVE IMAGINED AND DREAMED OF ALL THESE YEARS. IT HAS TO BE PERFECT, AND PERFECT IS A HARD THING TO FIND. THAT IS, UNTIL YOU ARRIVE AT SUDBURY. THERE IS A CALM TRANQUILLITY, AN AURA OF BEAUTY, A FEELING OF FREEDOM AND ESCAPE THAT ENVELOPES YOU. A SANCTUARY OF ALL THINGS THAT WASH AWAY THE STRESSES OF THE OUTSIDE WORLD, SUDBURY ENHANCES JOY AND RELAXATION; THIS PICTURE-PERFECT, IDYLLIC COUNTRY ESCAPE, SET ON ROLLING PASTURES WITH BREATHTAKING VIEWS, IS WHERE FOREVER BEGINS.
The journey starts now. A stunning setting, a champagne garden, an alfresco lounge bar, an outdoor fireplace, a gorgeous courtyard, quaint stables, beautiful fields with horses a plenty, dramatic views in every direction- it all makes for a venue that simply cannot be surpassed. Resident Caterers Capitol add the cherry on top with their divine food and ability to cater to everyone’s wildest wishes and desires. Managed by Paula Bevege Events, Sudbury has fast become the most popular of event destinations in the greater Wellington region. We talk to owner Janine Sudbury about her remarkable venue. 14

M&M: JANINE, HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD SUDBURY AND WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BUY IT?
M&M: WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE WEDDINGS THAT TAKE PLACE AT YOUR BEAUTIFUL VENUE?
JS: “I
JS: “I
bought Sudbury ten years ago as a base for my horse training and leadership business, Talkinghorses. It was one of those ‘love at first sight’ stories. As soon as I set foot on the property, I was overcome by something magical about the place. It’s difficult to explain, but other people have told me they felt the same when they first set foot on the farm. I’m not sure if it’s because of the breathtaking views or the hills which frame the views or something different altogether, but I was hit by this feeling of having come to a very special place. I did not view any other property and bought the farm at auction after a very competitive bidding war.
love being able to share my special place with other people and take great pleasure in seeing their eyes light up when they first arrive on the farm. In turn, I love being able to share their special day. How many people have a job that is all about celebrating the stuff of life, the glue that binds human beings together? “
M&M: WEDDINGS AND EVENTS IN GENERAL CAN BE STRESSFUL WORK, HOW DO YOU MANAGE IT ALL AND MAKE IT LOOK SO EASY? HOW DO YOU OPERATE TO MAKE IT ALL RUN SO SMOOTHLY?
I spent the first four years cleaning up the farm, putting in new fencing, relocating the cottage on the farm and generally pouring my heart and soul into the place. It was then that I was approached by a corporate client who asked if she could get married here. She did and I am still great friends with Fiona and Brendon and recently helped them celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary. That was the first of many wonderful celebrations, which, given my love affair with this place, feels rather apt!”
JS: “A
successful event requires attention to detail plus a good dollop of vision. One without the other is a disaster! That’s why I have teamed up with Paula Bevege, who is one of New Zealand’s leading wedding planners. When couples hold their weddings at Sudbury they don’t just get a magical venue- they get a team of people who are one hundred percent committed to making their special day a huge success.”

background is as a radio journalist. I have been a newsreader on the BBC, made documentaries in Hong Kong, ridden nutty racehorses... but none of these experiences comes close to the tingle down the spine I experience when I see two people join together in their love for each other.”

FROM NEW YORK MINUTE TO ETERNITY Tessa & Edward – 28th December 2012 Article by Johanna Osborne
HOW WE DID IT
THEIR STORY READS LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF A BEAUTIFUL FILM. TESSA AND EDWARD’S PATHS CROSSED 8 YEARS AGO THROUGH HAPPY COINCIDENCE WHEN THEY WERE BOTH HOLIDAYING IN QUEENSTOWN. THEY MARRIED BACK IN 2010 ON A BEAUTIFUL FALL AFTERNOON IN A SIMPLE SERVICE IN NEW YORK’S CITY HALL. AFTER THE VERY BRIEF NUPTIALS, THE PAIR JUMPED IN A YELLOW CAB AND ENJOYED CELEBRATORY DRINKS IN CENTRAL PARK. THEY SAT ON A PARK BENCH NEAR THE BOATHOUSE AND DRANK CHAMPAGNE TILL THE SUN WENT DOWN. IT JUST DOESN’T GET MORE ROMANTIC THAN THAT!

CUSINE: Guten Appetit Catering
ENTERTAINMENT/MUSIC: The Ed Zuccollo Trio with Nikita Tu-Bryant Followed by DJ’s: Henry Kember & James Findlater
And as breathtakingly starry-eyed as take-one was, Tessa and Edward had always planned to do it again here in New Zealand, with all their loved ones present, as a true “celebration of their nuptials”. And that was very much what determined the focus of this divine wedding; everything was special, meaningful and completely personalised for this immaculately planned day.

After an extensive venue search ‘Longwood Estate’ in the Wairarapa ticked all the boxes, reminding Tessa of her favourite childhood book ‘The Secret Garden’ with its magnificent dilapidated chic vibe. The estate’s intimate and unique setting, as well as the look and character of the venue fitted perfectly with the couple’s vision, and the day they were trying to create. With the careful selection of venue complete, the stage was set for the grand performance. Edward and Tessa, who reside in New York, were particularly thrilled at the prospect of celebrating back “home” in their beautiful native country. Edward passionately explains;

“It was a true destination wedding; although we didn’t have bridesmaids and groomsmen, it was marvellous to have both our families, and our nearest and dearest friends staying with us on location at Longwood for the few days over the wedding; that was really special.”
songs “Everlasting Light”. It truly was a melange of unforgettable personal moments! Wanting to inject a New York flavour into the festivities, Tessa and Edward decided to create and offer some decadent cocktails to their appreciative guests. The cool and calm groom played mixologist and prepared the 2 delicious offerings earlier on the day. For the party these were then served out of two 25 litre glass dispensers, and into over 300 vintage cocktail and champagne glasses, which the mothers of the bride and groom had accumulated over the course of a year. Another one of many ‘personalised touches’ the couple made, and felt was well worth the extra effort involved.
What was the most special part of their wedding? There is no doubt for either Tessa or Edward; “Our ceremony - hands down. Having already ‘eloped’ at City Hall in New York, we really wanted the ceremony to be unique to us and our situation; we didn’t want to get ‘remarried, rather we wanted the opportunity to share our feelings for one another with those we care about; a true proclamation and celebration of our love.” For Edward and Tessa this entailed many unique and very precious touches – such as writing their own ceremony and vows, which they did not share with each other until the time came to say them out loud in front of their 130 guests. One of their closest friends and first room-mate when they lived together as a couple served as celebrant on the day. Edward’s mother Jenny walked with her son hand-in-hand down the aisle just ahead of the elegant bride and her father, to one of the couple’s favourite
Tessa further explains “We really wanted the opportunity to relax and mingle with our guests before our ceremony, so we decided very early on that we wanted to do cocktails, lawn-games, and live jazz for a few hours before our vow-renewal. In fact, we decided to do away with many of the more conventional wedding traditions such as a bridal party, white wedding cake, first dance, sit-down meal and accompanying seating plan; instead favouring a more relaxed ‘cocktail-style’ format, which allowed guests 20

Thankfully my mother-in-law is extremely gifted in many areas including (now) wedding cake piñata restoration.”
to more easily mingle with one another.” And it appears their approach worked, everyone had a blast and the bride and groom could not have been happier or more relaxed with the proceedings and the flow of the weekend. Tessa credits being married already as a big help in keeping stress and anxiety in check; “It really meant we were able to focus on what was most important to us without having to worry about what other people thought ‘we should do’. There was also something really special about celebrating 2 years into our marriage, and having that perspective. The day and the lead-up to it was for me at least the ultimate confirmation that I had made the right decision, and that Edward was ‘my guy’.”
In fact, Rosie Gould, Tessa’s Mum sounds like she was a true angel throughout the entire preparation phase, with Tessa and Edward planning their NZ wedding from New York. Rosie’s proud son-in-law states; “It still amazes me how Rosie helped pull everything together; it can’t have been easy with us shouting commands from across the other side of the world, but she took it all in her stride!” Between an obviously highly capable mother-of-the-bride on location, and the experienced and professional Paula Bevege Events on the case, the planning process was seamless for Tessa and Edward, and resulted in the perfect finish: a celebration full of precious beautiful things from an era past, personalised to reflect the couple’s style, taste, attitude and story perfectly.
However, no wedding is complete without a minor challenge or two, and in this case it was the wedding cake shaped piñata that was the culprit. Edward says; “Let’s just say transporting a very large wedding cake shaped piñata back from New York to Wellington, via LAX and Sydney was just as difficult as it sounds. Without going into full details, an unnamed airline took an almighty ‘swing’ at the piñata, and did some serious damage before the final leg of our flight to New Zealand.
Would they do anything differently? Absolutely not. “To be completely honest, we wouldn’t change a thing: the location, the weather, the format, the theme, the dress, the food, the drink... it all worked perfectly; we really did have the best time ever!” 21

COUNTRY LOVING Amadee & Lance – 1st March 2013 Article by Johanna Osborne ON THE FIRST DAY OF MARCH THIS YEAR 160 PRIVILEGED GUESTS STOOD BY AS AMADEE AND LANCE SAID THEIR VOWS TO EACH OTHER ON THE PICTURESQUE MOTUKARAKA POINT IN PAUATAHANUI. WITH THE BEAUTIFUL INLET AND ROLLING HILLS AS THEIR BACKDROP, THIS WEDDING WAS AS ENCHANTING AS THEY COME. HAVING ONLY A FEW MONTHS EARLIER BOUGHT A HOUSE IN THE VERY SAME PLACE, THE COUPLE FELT SO HAPPY TO SHARE THEIR NEW HOME WITH THEIR MANY LOVED ONES. AMADEE AND LANCE PASSIONATELY EXPLAIN; “WE IMMEDIATELY FELL IN LOVE WITH THE LOCATION. WE THOUGHT IT WAS PERFECT TO GET ALL OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY OVER TO EXPERIENCE IT AS WELL. WITH THE WATER, THE NATIVE TREES, THE WILD LIFE AND THE SUNSET, THE LOCATION WAS AMAZING AND NAILED JUST WHAT WE WANTED FOR OUR WEDDING.”

Another reason this was an exceptional affair was because of Anais; Amadee and Lance’s gorgeous 4 year old daughter; “It was very important to us that she had a really special role to play on the day. Anais was our flowergirl, and to make her stand out we chose not to have a page boy… so the limelight was completely hers! She was just marvellous. Anais was so very excited for the months leading up to the wedding, and we are sure the memories of the day will last with her forever.”

meant that absolutely everything was well organised, and ran seamlessly. Paula brought so much knowledge and creative ideas to the table, and made all of our wishes possible. We were unusually relaxed in the week leading up to the wedding – and that is thanks to Paula, as she had absolutely everything in hand.”
Trish and the incredibly capable team at Simply Food served wonderful food for the guests to enjoy whilst taking in the breathtaking scenery of the day, and enjoying the catchy sounds of the Shenanigans who performed for the happy guests. Katie Bevege created the pretty bouquets, which made for a perfect complement to the overall theme and styling of this lovely wedding.
The fact they had a professional on the case meant Amadee and Lance were able to enjoy every minute of their beautiful wedding. To cap it off, post wedding they escaped on a relaxing campervan trip around the beautiful Bay of Island; “It was such a great way to wind down, reflect and relax! We can highly recommend it to anyone!”
The bride and groom used the services of Classic Cars and travelled via their sleek and cool Mustangs. Coming from a very large family it was important to Amadee that all loved ones could be present to celebrate on the day. The couple also wanted a big, glorious party with plenty of atmosphere; a night that everyone would remember! Thankfully with Paula Bevege’s help they were able to achieve both. Amadee and Lance could not be more grateful to Paula for her efforts; “The most helpful part was having the help of our wedding planner, Paula Bevege. Paula said to us at our first meeting that with her assistance we would ensure that there would be nothing we would look back upon and wish we had done differently. And we can gladly say, Paula couldn’t have been more right! Her experience, style and can-do attitude
Now they are back from their adventures and excited to start their life as newlyweds in their perfect little spot in the country; “We’re keen to kick back as a family, and really settle into our new community here in Pauatahanui. The next few years look pretty promising – with lots of quality family time together enjoying the outdoor lifestyle that’s right on our doorstep!” Not a bad happy ending for a couple who met during an early morning gym class. True love is alive and well in the beautiful country! 26

YESTERDAY MAN – AND WOMAN Sally & David – 5th January 2013 Article by Johanna Osborne IT WAS1997. BOTH WERE 1ST YEAR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS. BOTH IN THE NORTH TOWER ON THE 8TH FLOOR. AND BOOM, THERE YOU HAVE IT. CUPID’S BOW AND ARROW HIT ITS MARK. IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT WHEN SALLY AND DAVE FIRST SAW EACH OTHER THOSE 15 YEARS AGO. AND NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED SINCE. KINDRED SPIRITS WHO SHARE A PASSION FOR VINTAGE, THESE TWO HAD A BLAST PLANNING THEIR STYLISH WEDDING.
HOW WE DID IT BLOOMS:
As self described hunters of collectibles and curiosities, Sally and Dave’s wedding day just had to be vintage themed. Guests were even requested to ‘dress to impress in vintage style’. The couple felt this would help put people at ease and be a good talking point for those who didn’t know one another. The decor on the day was heavy on nostalgia with a rustic edge, grandma’s doilies, old silverware and bottles, home-made jams and a Wedgwood inspired cake. “We wanted a wedding that reflected who we are. We decorated the venue with an assortment of collectables and curiosities gathered over the 15 years we’ve been together - mostly during the year leading up to our big day.”

When it came to her dress, Sally also knew what she wanted – the challenge just lay in finding it. The eager bride-to-be spent a year looking for the perfect vintage gown, and purchased numerous back-up dresses along the way. But the hunt for the perfect one continued until the very last minute. “In the end I found my perfect dress - a gorgeous designer gown by my favourite bridal dressmaker - Johanna Johnson from Australia. I purchased it from a second-hand online store two weeks prior to the wedding!! After a tense couple of days waiting for the courier, I tried

dear friends who helped the couple set up the day before. Tasks included hanging doily bunting, arranging flowers and centrepieces, all right down to Sally’s exact photographic examples. Sally’s twin sister also travelled from London 3 weeks prior to the wedding in order to help her other half, and got stuck into printing menus, stamping labels and generally helping to make sure all the last minute things were taken care of, all the while recovering from jet lag! “She was such a star” a grateful Sally says.
Ask Sally what she found most helpful in planning her wedding, and she will not hesitate to list The Wellington Wedding Show as one of her most valuable tools; “We found our lovely photographer Mel Waite at The Wellington Wedding Show. Her work is fantastic. She really understood where we were coming from, which meant we had full confidence in her. She was fantastic on the day and captured it all wonderfully.” And not only that, but hair and make-up also fell into place; “We also made contact with Artist Michele Perry from Belle Rouge at the Wedding Show. She really captured the 30s glamorous look I was after. “
And that’s how Sally and David’s wedding day came to be – a team effort full of love and joy the whole way through: “The whole day was so special. We enjoyed all those little moments throughout the day when we would look at each other and realise that this was really it!” All the effort paid off, and the couple could not have been more pleased with how their unique vintage celebration turned out.
In terms of planning Sally and David had everything well under control with “one spreadsheet to rule them all”, but enjoyed giving others input into their big day; “We were given a lot of really useful advice throughout the year and we really enjoyed hearing the different stories people would tell us and watching their faces light up as they remembered their own wedding day.”
After departing their idyllic Wairapapa wedding destination the pair flew down to Awaroa Bay in the Abel Tasman, where they escaped the maddening crowd and stayed in a secluded log cabin just off the beach, no electricity, cellphone reception or internet; “It was the perfect place to snuggle up and relax.”
And then of course there was family. And in this instance they were an incredible help and support. Sally’s mum assisted with the finer details, such as sourcing doilies (“we had hundreds!”), milk bottles and the like, and also for hiding the many back-up wedding dresses that arrived from the future hubby-to-be! Then there was the über-amazing bridal party and

The big secret: the flowers were not real, but thanks to excellent styling and quality, the admiring guests were none the wiser! Other dazzling touches included a tall table to the side of the altar dressed with candles and a gorgeous large pewter urn filled to the brim with Magnolia blooms, the bride’s favourite. Meredith shares “Our first dance to ‘Crazy little thing called love’ was magical, as was the groom’s surprise solo dance serenade in the fashion of Patrick Swayze’s Dirty Dancing to Usher’s ‘O.M.G’!” This couple sure knows how to have a good time.
Unsurprisingly Meredith says she could talk forever about this topic; ”It is actually really lovely to reminisce! Especially as our 2nd wedding anniversary has not long been, and we now have our wee Fred (20 months old) to celebrate with too!” And if that weren’t exciting enough, by the time their 3rd wedding anniversary rolls around, there will be a second bambino to celebrate with them too! Looks to us like Meredith and James are certainly very busy living their happily ever after!
The ambience in the Hilton’s grand ballroom was very romantic; “I knew I wanted candles in abundance, so I dressed each table with at least a dozen candles of all sizes, either in votives or tall glass cylinders.” Meredith explains. Janus Bakerij’s stunning wedding cake was another touch of classic beauty –not to mention divine taste. WE TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET TO KNOW HER A LITTLE BETTER AND FIND OUT WHAT MAKES THIS TALENTED YOUNG LADY TICK. Everyone says you are a joy to have around on their wedding day and that you bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Where does your motivation come from?

I just love my job, and couldn’t imagine doing anything else. Being able to spend time with a couple on what is one of the best days of their lives and then at the end being able to give them something so special, which they will value and treasure for the rest of their lives... to me that is one of the most rewarding jobs imaginable. THE LAST THING MAURA EXPECTED AT HER 21ST BIRTHDAY PARTY WAS TO FALL IN LOVE WITH A GATECRASHER. BUT THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. AND PERHAPS THIS UNFORESEEABLE CHANCE ENCOUNTER SET THE TONE FOR WHAT WAS TO FOLLOW – A UNIQUE, PERSONAL JOURNEY FULL OF UNEXPECTED, HAPPY SURPRISES.

Maura and Steve wed on a sunny December day almost exactly a decade after their first chance-meeting. Their wedding day, much like their approach to life in general, was relaxed and full of fun with a big emphasis on the couple’s love of vintage and the retrospective.
FASHION: Dress – Brides on Thorndon Grooms Suit – Working Style
Setting out to provide their 80 guests with a veritable feast for the senses, Maura and Steve planned a wedding full of amazing moments, seemingly with all the trimmings.
GETTING THERE: Capital Cadillacs
PAMPER:
Zealandia’s beautiful Heritage Lawn and its delightful Rata Cafe provided the first setting in the elaborate proceedings. The theme? “Retrospective rustic whimsy with a few birds thrown in. We love retro things especially from the post World War II era, and combined this with the rustic beauty of our venue, a New Zealand native birds sanctuary. The bridesmaid’s were styled as 1940s pin-up girls and the boys were rat-packers in the summer.” Steve says Maura couldn’t resist the idea of having the bridal party make their entrance by boat across the reservoir. And who can blame her? The pretty ladies arrived across the lagoon to plenty of “oohs” and “ahhs” from the delighted guests. This grand entrance marks one of the many highlights of the day for the couple. As for their choice of venue, both Maura and Steve were thrilled with Zealandia; “Anna and her team are very supportive and offer excellent planning advice throughout the process.”

Beer Quarter provided an excellent location for the revelry that was to follow, especially as both Maura and Steve love nothing more than a good ale. The pair laughs; “We were not a typical couple choosing to slink off early, we partied with our guests into the night and had a great time!”
The couple held a post-ceremony cocktail hour on the Heritage Lawn, staging something rather like out of an old glamorous film. As the co-owner of Vintage & Pretty, Maura and Steve had access to a huge collection of antiques and retro items, and were able to create a scene and set a tone that would transport friends and family to a bygone era. There was a vintage bird watching station, an outdoor bar, a marital advice school desk and an outdoor lounge suite. Mini props were set-up all the way around Rata Cafe, from the seating plan station to the retro DJ table. Guests were treated to boat rides in between taking in Zealandia’s breathtaking scenery and enjoying this vintage-chic party.
The recipe to the huge success of their wedding day? “Our goal was to have a total, no holds barred, celebration of our relationship. To achieve this we wanted to create a very personal and fun wedding that was undeniably “us” and enjoyed by all. We created a light-hearted, very bespoke wedding by packing it full of entertainment and by customising everything, right down to an M & S wedding stamp!” Yes, it’s true, this couple left no stone unturned with a myriad of small touches as well as bigger effects, including a gift table with reconditioned post-box and vintage type-writer, and a DJ booth with 1950s Poweray record player. The list goes on!
With the official part of the day over, the couple then took a cruise around the city in 1958 white Cadillac limos with their bridal party in tow, and paid a little visit to their other businesses. Yes Maura and Steve co-own Wellington favourites Beach Babylon and Little Beer Quarter as well! The after-wedding celebrations then continued at Little Beer Quarter in Wellington’s Edward St. As a quirky and welcoming craft-beer bar, Little

– of course – spreadsheets for every activity and budget. Our spreadsheeting surprised very few of our friends and family!” And there you have it, amazing planning and organisation is the key to undeniable success. The secret is out!
The couple also opted for a decadent dessert table and combined a retro pink, red & blue candy buffet with a dessert table brimming with candy apples, cake, cake pops, cookies, lamingtons, cheesecake, tarts, cupcakes, fresh summer berries & macarons. Maura says “This was enjoyed by all and much less stuffy than standard plated desserts.”
Steve and Maura were extremely happy with how their day unfolded, including the ceremony which again was tailor-made to suit their personalities. So what’s next? Fresh from creating a picture perfect wedding, Maura says; “I’d love to help others create weddings as beautiful and special as ours was.” And through her business Vintage & Pretty she can do just that!
The wedding was unsurprisingly nicknamed “Weddingmageddon” and an “MGM Production” by their friends. Behind the whimsical, light-hearted day lay the couple’s usual tendency to plan everything out to the ‘nth degree: “We had extensive instruction booklets for everyone (known to us as the wedding dossier!) setting up the wedding, decorations in ordered boxes, back-up plans for every possibility including snow and earthquakes, and
Gosh, I’m not sure about you, but this sounds like one huge, amazing hum-dinger of a party that I’m a little sad I missed out on! Thank goodness for the talented Melissa Thorburn, who captured the amazing photographs of this incredibly special day. Thanks to the gorgeous images we all get to enjoy some amazing eye candy, and a little bit of the very cool retro flavour of Steve and Maura’s Wedding Day. 51

THE CELEBRATION STARTS NOW! Lindsay & Chris Article by Johanna Osborne, photography by Amy Schulz
the Chateau before our trip, as it looked like a really magical place to stay. We weren’t disappointed. When we arrived we were the only guests on site and had the whole place to ourselves. We were greeted by the housekeeper and shown up to our room. Chris suggested we take a walk around the grounds before the other guests returned. At the time I thought it strange that Chris would need to bring a backpack along on a garden walk, but he said he needed to bring a bottle of water along (but unknown to me it was to conceal his ulterior motives behind the garden walk!). We explored the grounds for a while and then stopped in one of the cottage gardens set amongst some of the ruins and passed underneath a stone archway covered in roses. Chris then pulled out a photo memory book he had designed filled with special photos of us over the years and a story poem he had written about our journey together. The poem led up to the final page of the book where it was written ‘Will you marry me?’ and I looked up to see Chris kneeling in front of me with a ring in his hand. To be honest I was such a mess at this point I can’t remember what he said, although I did remember saying YES repeatedly! We celebrated that evening over dinner at a lovely romantic local rural restaurant called L’Auberge in the middle of nowhere. The night was topped off by an amazing sunset over the French countryside - a perfect end to a perfect day.
THE BEAUTY OF MODERN WEDDINGS IS THAT WITH TIME NEW TRADITIONS AND WAYS OF DOING THINGS SLOWLY EVOLVE, AND THE SOMEWHAT NEW-FOUND TREND OF DOING “ENGAGEMENT SHOOTS” IS ONE WE ARE PARTICULARLY FOND OF. AFTER ALL, HOW OFTEN DO WE HEAR COUPLES SAY WHAT A BLUR THEIR WEDDING DAY WAS, AND THAT THEY ARE GRATEFUL THEY HAVE THE PHOTOS TO REMIND THEM OF THE BEAUTY OF IT ALL? Well, in many ways the same can be said for the months of planning leading up to the big day. Once you are engaged, the whirlwind of organising quickly ensues, and you can be up to your ears in bunting and pink table-runners before you know it! It truly is a great time to do something momentous and take hold of the moment. And that’s where these very cool engagement shoots come in. Think of it as the entree to the real thing; a wonderful keepsake to look back on, and remind yourself of how young and fabulous you once were. Young love, there’s nothing like it. So let’s immortalise it on your timeline of life! We chat to Lindsay and Dave who did exactly that, and now have some stunning images to proudly look back on. This young couple are thrilled with their decision to work with the very popular Amy Schulz who captured their young love so beautifully. Lindsay and Chris felt instantly comfortable with Amy, and were sold with her vision - soft lighting, beautiful colours, natural moments. In fact, Amy had to laugh at the amount of shots of Chris and Lindsay kissing, leaving no doubt the couple definitely felt at ease with her! M&M:
M&M: When
How long have you been together and how did you meet?
L&C: Ours
was a typical ‘office romance’ story! After meeting at work in 2008 and playing together in the lunchtime netball team we soon realised we had great chemistry on and off the court. At the beginning we both agreed to try and keep our relationship a secret at work - but little did we realise most of our colleagues had cottoned on long ago.
M&M: How
will you have your wedding?
We’ve just sent out our ‘Save the Dates’ for Sunday February 9th 2014! This has given us over 18 months to plan for the wedding and plenty of notice for our guests, some of whom we are hoping will make it from overseas L&C:
M&M: What
do you think is the most exciting thing about getting engaged?
L&C: As we were overseas when it happened it was so exciting to be able to call up our friends and family to share the good news with them. My parents already knew of Chris’ plans (along with our travel agent!) so I think they were just relived they didn’t have to keep it a secret any longer. The rest of our holiday was spent in a bubble of post-engagement bliss, which made travelling together all the more special.
did the proposal happen and did you know it was coming?
We had just arrived in Normandy at the Chateau de L’isle-Marie near Bayeux after a month travelling around the UK and Europe. We booked 63
