AT THE HELM HONORARY SECRETARY'S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members The past two months have been busy times at the Club. We've just completed another exciting regatta – our 12th consecutive annual – with our main sponsor naming it the Corum-RSYC Regatta 2011. We're happy and grateful for Corum's strong support and look forward to more years of closer collaboration, along with other sponsors as well. This year's regatta also welcomed the participation of Sailability Singapore, and the group of determined sailors with disabilities. I must thank the members who stepped forward to sponsor these individual sailors and it speaks well of our Club that we had more sponsors than the 19 sailors who participated. Kudos all round, to sponsors, sailors and their many supporters, and to the many volunteers and our staff who did a great job. Another activity that kept us busy is the construction of the dry stacker. I'm happy to report that there is steady progress, despite the site constraints and some technical engineering difficulties encountered. The five-storey structure that will provide shelter for up to 300 boats, is still on track for a year-end completion, at most a couple weeks late. This leads me to bring members' attention to the on-going membership drive that offers some exciting rewards when you succeed in introducing new members who join the Club now. Please see details in this magazine. Going forward, we have a Charity Cruise 2011 coming up on Sunday

16 October. We plan to have a lovely picnic outing to Pulau Hantu and this year's beneficiaries will be the boys and girls from Children's Aid Society and Jamiyah Singapore. Following the recent donation of Olympic mementoes by former member James Cooke (as reported in our last magazine), we are delighted that the grand-daughter of our former commodore E.G. ‘Ned' Holiday, has also donated her grand-father's Olympic souvenirs to our Club. The late Mr Holiday was a keen sailor who sailed under the Singapore banner in the 1956 Melbourne and 1960 Rome Olympics. This is just a reminder to old members or their families that the Club welcomes any Club memorabilia to augment our collection of Club heritage materials. Following our Main Committee meeting this month, I have the honour to report that our distinguished patron has stepped down as President of Singapore in August 2011 at the end of his second term. We wish to record our special thanks to Mr S.R. Nathan for his excellent support, especially in the past two years when he visited the Club twice and graced the occasion of the launching of our heritage book in June 2010.

2010, and currently still serves as a vice president of the Singapore National Olympic Council. I look forward to your continued support and seeing you around the Club more often. With best wishes, Balakrishnan B. Honorary Secretary 20 August 2011

On behalf of the Club, I wish to also record our heartiest congratulations to our Vice Commodore Low Teo Ping, on his being awarded the BBM (Bintang Bakti Masyarakat) or Public Service Star in this year's National Day honours list. A retired banker, Teo Ping has served as president of Singapore Sailing Federation for 12 years before stepping down in RSYC MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2011

AT THE HELM GENERAL MANAGER'S MESSAGE Dear Members of RSYC, I thank all Members who supported the Corum RSYC Regatta in July, be it as participant in the races or by visiting the Club for the various complementary events. We received good feedback on both. The next major event is the traditional Oktoberfest on 7 October. We have engaged a 12-piece band that will keep you entertained with typical oom pah pah music, regular prosit and plenty of fun and games. Of course, authentic German fare will accompany the evening. I am sure that you all will have a great time and that you will keep the original German Erdinger beer flowing. Make sure that you book your seats early, as we do expect to have a full house. Aside of the Oktoberfest, we have planned a host of activities in the next few months. There is a fishing workshop, a kids' cooking class and a great Halloween Party, a wine event and, of course the traditional annual Charity Cruise. As usual, Chef Martin has come up with some mouth-watering promotions for both restaurants. The summer break is over and many sports are back in full swing. Be it football or rugby or racing, you find it all ”live” at The Mess. We have added some spice in the form of games and competitions to make your favourite sport even more exciting. Do not miss these. With the opening of the dry stack building at the end of the year, we are embarking on a drive to increase our membership base and have come up with a special

promotion to benefit you in helping enrol new members. You can enjoy double rewards and earn up to $1,200 in F&B vouchers for each successful referral. You find more information on all the events and activities, as well as the member referral promotion in this magazine. On a more serious note, I have observed that our control on the entry by non-members to the Club is lacking. We have therefore tightened our access checks at the security guard house as follows: · Members are required to present their membership card or display the car decal if arriving by car. · Guests of members must be registered in the Guest Book that is located at the Reception area. · Particulars of passengers of boats must be submitted before passengers are permitted entry. · Boating members must advise the Club of contractors and suppliers who are expected to arrive. I understand that some of these procedures may be inconvenient to some members. However, for the benefit of the general membership and the good of the Club, I seek your cooperation and understanding in adhering to these simple steps. I look forward seeing you at the Club soon. COVER STORY

We've just concluded another fun-filled annual regatta, the 12th consecutive annual event of the present series since moving to our current west coast location in August 1999. Nineteen boats and about 107 sailors took part. Another great success, despite some nail-biting moments as to whether we'd have enough entries due to the non-increasing pool of yachties and their boats. Several firsts stood out: Our ever-supportive main sponsor – Corum – had naming rights to the event for the first time. We also welcomed a spunky group of 19 sailors with various disabilities who sailed under the aegis of Sailability Singapore. But most notable, I think, was the participation of younger sailors in their early 20s from the universities and polytechnics. And they did pretty well too. These and the following pages tell the story of Regatta 2011. One year has sailed smoothly by since the 2010 RSYC regatta and it's fantastic to see that the sailing community here is still so much alive and vibrant and keen on

being part of such sailing events. The keel boats were well looked after, taking a prominent place in the marina. The addition of the Sailability and RC sailors went a long way in expanding and adding to the Regatta's on water success. Also, the additional activities on land broadened the regatta's festivities and went down extremely well with the land lubbers and children alike. First morning of the regatta saw what looked like the start of a scorching day. The weather didn't disappoint and as the air filled with

4 RSYC_SepOct2011_14.indd 4

heat and anticipation of the day's activities, the crew of the various boats were seen on the marina, packing sails, tidying ropes (oops! There are no such things as ropes on a race boat ) and getting briefed by their respective skippers. Everyone was a picture of efficiency and even the novices on some boats seem to blend in well with the professionals. This would be the morning ritual for all three days of races. Our keelboat O'BluEyes knew that she'd have her hands full, being in the IRC B category with SMUmad,

REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE YACHT CLUB

SMUve, KO2 and Rainbow Dream. They were fast boats with experienced skippers and although a little daunting, the challenge was well anticipated by O'BluEyes crew. Winds were fairly constant on the first day of the race but sometime during the end of the first race, the winds seemed to shift direction, causing the committee boats to take a little longer to chart out the second race. This, however, didn't dampen anyone's spirits as everyone sailed around hurling good natured comments to one another while grabbing a quick meal and a well-needed drink. The rest of the first day's race went quickly and soon we found ourselves approaching the marina wearily but everyone seemed to have a sudden burst of energy when they were met at each respective berth with an RSYC staff who apparently had his hands full with jugs of sweet nectarine (or at least it seemed that way as it was much welcomed cold beer!) Nothing ever tasted as sweet as that first sip of cold beer to a parched sailor's throat. We overheard some female crew (YES! There were female crew who held their own on the boats) lamenting that a bottle of wine would have gone down well with them. Something for the organisers to ponder over in the next regatta perhaps? Most crew were ravenous by the time they got off their boats and

much appreciated the snacks provided right smack on the marina. By early evening, some family members had joined the crew and curious boys and girls were seen asking daddy and mummy all about the day's races. What a great event for the whole family!! Day 2 saw the boats competing in the iconic passage race around Raffles Lighthouse. The start line was around Pulau Salu and travelled along Pulau Sudong, Pulau Pawai and Pulau Senang. It was the PY boats to start first and Velera Linda got off the start line ahead of her two competitors: Spirit of Francis and Charlotte's Web. Next were the J24's, the biggest class in the Regatta. It was a chance to see whether ShengLi and Hakuna Matata could break the winning run of Angel on Day 1. IRC B was dominated by the three Platu's. Last off were the IRC A's who had extra distance to cover. It always pays to do your homework and be familiar with the race route and this was to be the story of the IRC A race. With the wind coming from the south, south-west, it was a white sails race all the way to Raffles. After the rounding of the lighthouse

buoy, the skies were filled with different coloured spinnakers for the short run to Senang buoy. On the return leg, spinnakers were once again seen filling the skies. Most boats chose to fly their spinnakers through the finish line and continued on towards the RSYC marina. Rainbow Dream had a great race and beat KO2 into third place. Rikki Tikki Tavi finished second behind the favourite Windsikher. Unfortunately, Men At Work was disqualified for incorrect rounding of the first mark. Day 3 was the Corum Cup race day with three up wind, down wind races up for grabs. RSYC Satu and RSYC Dua had their work cut out to improve on their placing from previous days and Juno managed to finish second on the last race of

Angel: Winner of One Design class.

The event ended on a high as everyone seemed satisfied with their efforts, of which, many crew came away from the event having learned a little more about sailing and getting along with their crew. The end of Day 3's races concluded with prize giving and a buffet dinner with a sumptuous spread and of course, lots of drinking and merry making. The regatta was a great success, and on behalf of all the skippers and crew I would like to thank the behind-the-scenes people who did a great job in the organizing and running of the regatta and in particular to Captain Robat for the planning of the passage race around Raffles Lighthouse. Looking forward to next year's regatta and thankful to the organisers RSYC and the sponsors for such a well-planned 2011 regatta. Text by Glen O'Grady Pictures by Erick Lo

Mr Karl Chairm Regatta Commi

Winners of the 2011 Corum RSYC Regatta This year's 2011 Corum RSYC Regatta was a repeat of the big success Windsikher had in 2010. In the IRC A class, Sarab Jeet Singh's Team Windsikher chalked up 5 firsts to defeat a strong challenge from Brent Morgan's Men At Work.

The overall winner that lifted the new Corum Challenge Cup was Team Windsikher, coming in first in the passage race. There was much jubilation all round especially at the tables that took home the many big prizes. Our thanks go to all the sponsors for making the 2011 Regatta such a great success.

In IRC B class, the two SMU boats battled it out, with skipper Gregory Ho's SMUve edging out SMUmad helmed by Christopher Lim who had won in 2009. In the PY class, Christopher Nunns in Velera Linda took back his title which he won in 2004, 2007 and 2009. The comfortable winner in the One-Design/J24 class was last year's winner Angel, skippered again by Vladimir Borstnar. Team Angel came in first in six races, a rare feat equaled only by Velera Linda in the PY class.

CORUM RSYC REGATTA 2011

Sailing at the Corum RSYC Regatta the RC way Thought of racing in an intense race without getting wet and a beer in one hand? Well, a fleet of 8 remote control sailors did just that when they participated in the Corum RSYC regatta over the weekend of the 23rd & 24th of July. Sailing a class of International One Meter (IOM) yachts between the fingers of the yacht club's marina provided spectacular and intense one design racing. As the name of the class suggest, these custom built fiberglass yachts are 1 meter long and can carry 3 different rigs which allows the yacht to sail in excess of 25 knots of wind. Sailing between the docks proved tricky as the wind was shifty with the wind shadow from the 60ft+ Green Warrior keeping the sailors on their toes. Each race consisted of 2 or 3 laps on a windward leeward course with a race time of about 10-15mins per race. With a handicap system in place to keep the racing close and 1 discard per 6 races, staying out of trouble and keeping the sailing clean was key to this event. After 26 races over the 2 days (YES its not a typo, 26 races!!) Team Columbia's Colin Ng finished the racing in first place. Lim Khoon Hin in 2nd and Ed Morales in 3rd. Those interested in getting involved with RC sailing can contact Colin at colin470@yahoo.com with questions which involve this hobby. Colin Ng

Jovin Tan wins 2011 RSYC Regatta Access 2.3 Title

Jovin Tan beats Sailability Singapore Open champion Firdhaus to claim the RSYC Regatta Access 2.3 title after 3 days of exciting competitions Prior to his win, Jovin had taken part in the IFDS Worlds in Weymouth, London and finished in 8th position. Returning in style to claim gold in the RSYC Regatta Access 2.3 the 25-year-old former IFDS Skud 18 World Champion finished 17 points ahead of Firdhaus (with 21 points) to prove that he still has what it takes to compete in both the local and international sailing scene. Fellow sailor Abdul Karim finished in third position with 26 points. Sailability Singapore has grown considerably since its humble beginnings in 2000. The recent RSYC Regatta attracted a total of 20 disabled sailors of which 9 of them are wheelchair bound. These sailors have become more active in their participation and exhibit a strong determination to excel in the sport. We are extremely delighted at the progress of the team and would like to thank the RSYC organizing committee for organizing this event for Sailability Singapore and their continuous support to our cause. DEVELOPMENT

Development work on the dry stacker continues steadily on site At time of going to press, the first 12 columns of one half of the stacker building (Zone B) are in place. These columns and the cross-beams should be completed by the time you read this, with roofing works expected to start in late September. It looks like we may see the handover of half the stacker sometime in October 2011.

Steel beams and columns on site.

When the Zone B part is finished, some boats that are currently occupying the Zone C area will be relocated to the newly-completed building. This will be sometime in the 4th Quarter of 2011. The building site is quite a challenge and due to site constraints and engineering/technical difficulties encountered, some minor delays can be expected. The Zone C area, where the second half of the dry stacker is to be built, will become a hive of activity towards year end. Zone C is targeted to be completed by end December or early January 2012. We will continue to keep members informed on a regular basis through this magazine as well as on our website. More photos are available on our website.

Micropile load testing in progress.

| THE BRIDGE

What's new in F&B... September and October is traditionally the season for Chinese families to gather and share a meal to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival. This is a popular harvest festival dating back over 3,000 years to worship the moon in China's Shang Dynasty. We have prepared a special menu for this occasion at The Wharf for you to invite your family and friends. At The Bridge, we offer fresh live mussels in various styles in September. We dedicate October to the traditional German Oktoberfest and serve a good selection of typical German dishes. Among them, Roast Pork Knuckle is a Club signature dish and the most popular. Freshly roasted every day, the keys are to get the crispy crackling from the skin of the knuckle and the tenderness of the meat. Visit The Bridge this month and enjoy the German fare with a glass of cold Erdinger draft beer. At The Mess, it is a time of action. The Barclays Premier League is back. The Singapore Grand Prix will again thrill fans from around the world and the Rugby World Cup kicks off in September. If you are a sports fan, The Mess is the place to be. Have a couple of drinks with fellow members and enjoy the action. Martin Ho Executive Chef

RECENT EVENTS Fathers' Day Special

Kukup Farm & Fishing Village Tour, Durian Fiesta And Firefly Cruise On Sunday 19 June, 62 participants (including 16 fathers) celebrated Father's Day with RSYC as we headed to West Malaysia for a day of fun! We started the day, bright and early, as we set off from the Club to beat the traffic congestion at the immigration checkpoint. Our first stop was the mushroom farm where they learnt how mushrooms are harvested. There was also free-flow of fresh mushrooms for sampling which participants enjoyed over breakfast. Next was the Kukup Fishing Farm. It was quite an eye-opener for some as they posed for pictures with a baby shark and other saltwater fishes. Lunch was a sumptuous feast of durians and other tropical fruits. Everyone ate to their hearts' content. Those who were not a fan of the king of fruits had fried beehoon and curry chicken. There was always time for ladies'

favourite pastime – Shopping! We stopped by at Tebrau City Mall for free & easy time. Some were spotted enjoying coffee whilst others busied themselves with shopping. After a seafood dinner, we geared ourselves for the finale of the trip – Firefly Cruise. Donned in our life jackets, we went on a river cruise to spot fire flies amongst the shrubs and trees. It was indeed a delightful sight! As the night falls, we all headed back to RSYC tired but satisfied as it was, no doubt, a fun-filled trip as the group's spirits were high and friendships were fostered amongst members. Do look out for the next short getaways coming up soon!

HERITAGE

Some unexpected Historical Memorabilia Editor's note: When Annette Holiday, the grand-daughter of former Commodore E.G. 'Ned' Holiday recently donated some of the late Mr Holiday's Olympic souvenirs to the Club, she also gave us a copy of a type-written speech found among his personal effects. This speech was believed to have been delivered by our former commodore sometime in the year 1956 when Ned Holiday was commodore, and Governor of Singapore Sir Robert Black was our Vice Patron. Here is an excerpt on the Club's history.
