COMMODORE'S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members of RSYC The current Committee's term of office will soon come to a close when Members convene to elect a new Committee on Friday 22 June 2012. It has been an eventful year. We are most proud of the fact that we, as a Club, successfully completed the five-storey Dry Stack, a project that was mooted as far back as 1995 when the Committee of the day started planning for this present West Coast site. The dry stack was in the plan at that time, but it was put on hold due to the global economy that also affected Singapore a few years later. Members may recall that about one year ago, on 14 April 2011, we handed the construction site to the main contractor. I am happy to report that the Dry Stack is now completed. If all goes according to plan, we should be getting the TOP (temporary occupation permit) for the second half of the building any time now. A simple ceremony is scheduled to be held on 18 May 2012 to celebrate the completion of the dry stack building. Boat owners who are berthing their boats at the dry stack will be invited to attend the celebration. This will be followed by a dinner BBQ thereafter for all boaters. This day, Friday 18 May 2012, is also a special day for all of us. On that evening, we will also welcome our distinguished Patron, Mr S.R. Nathan, who will be visiting RSYC for the first time after stepping down as President of Singapore last August 2011, at the end of his 12 years in that high office. Mr Nathan has kindly agreed to be the guest-of-honour for the evening and will preside at the opening of the dry stack building. The Committee will be hosting Mr Nathan to dinner at The Bridge thereafter. Three other events need highlighting in this month's message. On Sunday 3 June, we shall be celebrating our traditional Commodore's Day – a family event for young and old alike. Do come with the whole family and bring some guests too, as the management and staff have planned a full day of activities from 10am to 5pm. Having fun is the order of the day. In the month of July, we are rallying our sailors together for the annual RSYC Regatta 2012. This may be the year to get your name on the victors plaque in the foyer! The dates are the two weekends of 14 and 21 July. We also want to ask for volunteers to serve on the Regatta Committee in the ten weeks before the Regatta. A task force is in place, led by our GM Mr Trachsel and our Head of Sea Sports Razib Samsudin. The third event needing your support is, of course, the coming AGM on Friday 22 June. Do mark the date down in your diary and make a special effort to attend this important meeting. A summary of our Financial Review for the year ending 31 December 2011 is on page 5 of this magazine. If your work schedule allows you some spare time, we also need some new volunteers to join in the running of the Club for the next 12 months. According to the book “Three Burgees”, it was 32 enthusiastic sailing aficionados that revived the then Singapore Yacht Club one July afternoon in 1919 that made us the oldest surviving club in Singapore. Except for the World War Two years of 1942 to 1945, the RSYC had always held an AGM without a break since 1920. That is why the next AGM is the Club's 87th annual general meeting. GENERAL MANAGER'S MESSAGE Dear Members, Firstly I thank you for your understanding to have the Club closed on the afternoon of 18 April 2012 for the annual staff dinner & dance. It was a good evening for all and everybody had a really good time. The Boat Asia show in April was more successful than last year in that we attracted a good number of new members and potential members. I was also happy to see that many of you made the effort to come by our booth to say hello and to give our team encouragement. Thank you. Unfortunately, I need to report that we continue to see infringements on the club's by-laws in respect of non-members using the club. Being a member-owned Club, we must protect the privileges and benefits that membership entails. Part of this is to ensure that only members and their guests enjoy the use of the club facilities. We have recently implemented that only Members may be owners and co-owners of new boats coming to berth at the Club. This excludes visiting yachts. This measure will go some way to ensure that only Members enjoy unrestricted access to the Club. For your convenience, we have also placed a Guest Book at the security gantry at the entrance of the club. This will make it easier for you to register your guests, if you proceed from the gantry directly to the marina areas. Alternatively, there is a Guest Book at the clubhouse lobby. I seek your assistance in ensuring that you sign in your guests at all times. I have instructed my team to be more vigilant in preventing entry of non-members and guests who are not registered. This includes random checks of membership cards. Regrettably on a few occasions, some Members objected to this and, rather impolitely, refused requests to register their guests or to produce their

membership cards. I have to reiterate that our employees are working under instructions and that they deserve to be treated with respect. This, of course, applies to team members in all departments. My message thus far is a bit sombre, so I wish to end on some positive information. As has been tradition, the Club will again organise a Commodore's Day before the Annual General Meeting. This family oriented fun event will be held on Sunday 3 June. Among the host of activities that day, we have planned a tele-match series for families. We hope to have at least ten families participate in these games. I encourage you to register early for this fun series. It was great to see so many Members come to the two recent Member Gettogether evenings at the Mess. In view of your support, we will continue with the “Three bucks a drink” theme for these events. Come and meet fellow members on the last Thursdays of every month. We will introduce this month a lunch promotion at The Bridge Restaurant. Visit the restaurant with your associates or friends for the Executive Lunch and one out of four eats for free. The lunch consists of a three-course meal including coffee or tea at $25. Bridge restaurant for private function on 18 May

The Bridge restaurant and the Beacon bar will be closed for dinner on Saturday 18 May 2012. The Club will be hosting a special dinner for our Patron, former President of Singapore S.R. Nathan.

Exchange of Burgees

On 28 March 2012, the Club exchanged burgees with Lahaina Yacht Club when their members Tom and Chris

Brayton paid a brief visit to RSYC. Lahaina YC is located on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Maui and has an active sailing program with several regattas a year. One of their more challenging regattas is a biennial race from Victoria (Vancouver) to Maui, a distance of 2,308 nautical miles. This year's Vic-Maui International Yacht Race starts on 5 July 2012.

Alternate port clearance at Bintan

Good news for boaters intending to cruise around the island of Bintan in Indonesia, and its numerous nearby smaller islands. Boaters can now clear their immigration and customs directly at the Bandar Bentan Telani (BBT) ferry terminal without having to go to Nongsa Point Marina at Batam island. However please note that the pier is meant primarily for the domestic ferries. Make sure you have extra fenders to protect your boat. This alternative landing point is an added advantage for those who do not intend to cruise around Batam and its nearby islands. According to Bintan Resort, the depth at the pier is about 3.5 meters, adequate for most small to medium-sized power boats. “Green Book” and “Sailing Permit” are still required. Please contact the Marine Department for your Green Book and Sailing Permit application. Our staff will be glad to assist you. There are also other charges imposed. Annual General Meeting Please take note that the 87th Annual General Meeting of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club will be held at the Nautica Ballroom on Friday 22 June 2012 at 7.00pm. The Club's Annual Report 2011/2012, which includes the formal Notice of Meeting, will be mailed out to Members during the first week of June 2012. A new RSYC Committee will be elected for the year 2012/2013. Nominations for election to the Committee must be completed on the prescribed form, with an eligible proposer and seconder. Nomination forms can be obtained from the Club's Administration Office. Completed forms must reach this Office not later than 5.00pm on Friday 15 June 2012.

Update on Development Dear Members, With every passing day, the Dry Stack (second unit) comes closer to becoming a reality. In the last two weeks, the roof and side metal claddings of this Unit have been installed. As you read this report that comes out in early May 2012, the second unit would be ready for inspection by the relevant authorities. We fully expect the TOP (temporary occupation permit) to be issued by the middle of May. In anticipation of this, we have tentative plans to hold a simple ceremony to mark the official date of the completion of the entire Dry Stack. Do check our website for more details. The next step would be the allocation of dry berths for the Members' boats in Unit 2. Spaces in Unit 1 have been almost fully assigned when we received the first TOP in January this year. It's a beautiful sight to see all the boats neatly stacked and being easily accessible to the boat owners or their official nominees only. With regards to the extension to the Marina Lodge, work is still in progress, albeit somewhat slowly, due to unforeseen difficulties on the soil condition on Zone A. Our contractor, in concert with our consultant and architect, is doing their best to overcome these problems and the work schedule has fallen behind by several weeks. Our revised timeline for

the Accommodation Wing extension is now pushed back to a completion date sometime in the fourth quarter of 2012. October would be a likely target for the completion of the new four-storey block. There will be some 60 rooms and suites in the upgraded Marina Lodge when everything is completed. Although Christmas is still some months away, it seems likely that some celebrations to mark the completion of the Development projects of 2011/12 would be in order towards year end. Members' views are being sought in connection with this. Do let your RSYC Committee know, if you have some ideas to make the event a memorable one. Early planning is always a good idea. I would like to thank all Members, and especially boat owners, for their patience and understanding during the past year as we fulfill the Club's mission to build first-class facilities for the enjoyment of Members and their families. I am especially indebted to the members of the current Committee who labored long hours at meetings to see through these Development projects. Continue the Tradition

This year will see the 13th annual running of the RSYC Regatta of the current series that started in 2000 shortly after we moved to the present location. The names of the various skippers and their yachts that won the respective classes can be seen on the Victors' Plaque in the foyer. Will this be your lucky year to lift the challenge trophies? There's still time to register, and here are the details:

the organizers will be inviting the SB3 and Corsair Dash 750 boats to participate as well. In all there will be eight different classes, subject to the number of entries received. More details from the NOR can be found on the website, posted in March 2012. The SI (Sailing Instructions) will go up from 7 July onwards.

This year's RSYC Regatta will be on the two weekends in July: the races will be run on Sunday 15, and Saturday and Sunday 21 & 22 July. Entries close on 1 July 2012 at 5pm. Entry forms and the Notice of Race (NOR) are available from the regatta website: www.rsycregatta.org.

A working group comprising RSYC management and staff has been formed since 28 February and more details on the activities both on water and on land will be announced shortly. This group, under General Manager Mr Werner Trachsel, includes Capt Robat, Marina Manager, Head of Sea Sports Razib Samsudin, and Seasports Officer Jasni.

Like in previous years, the classes of the regatta are classified into IRC A / IRC B / J24 / PY / Sailability and RC (radio-control) sailing. This year, for the first time,

RSYC members interested in serving on the Organising Committee for the Regatta are urged to contact the General Manager without delay.

BOAT ASIA 2012

RSYC at Boat Asia Now in its 20th year, Boat Asia 2012 took place on 12 to 15 April at Marina at Keppel Bay, same venue as in the last few years. There were about 100 corporate participants including some leading companies that brought out about 50 luxury yachts from 30 to 130-footers. Two days had glorious sunshine but two others were dampened by inclement weather which affected the attendance, estimated at about 12,000 altogether.

Once again RSYC had a booth at the annual boat show, touted as the largest such event in Asia. We highlighted our new Dry Stack which drew much interest among boaters in Singapore. A number of them signed up for ordinary and term memberships during the show, and many good leads were obtained. According to show organizer TMX Show Productions, Boat Asia 2013 will return to the same venue from 18 to 21 April next year.

For lunch, The Bridge offers a relaxed dining atmosphere. It's the place for a social gathering or a business lunch. A 3-course set lunch is offered daily at only $25 or you can select A la Carte. You can be assured of a value-for-money meal. A good selection of daily dinner specials and Chef's recommendations is also made available for diners. On Sundays, a Carving Wagon is rolled out so that members can enjoy good roast, service and a relaxed dining experience.

Editor's note: We welcome articles from members and their immediate families regarding various RSYC activities, especially water-related sports. This article is contributed by Ms Wee Yan Ran, a junior member who is awaiting admission into a local university. In 1965, the RSYC was involuntarily relocated from its clubhouse at Trafalgar Street to a site at the mouth of the Sungei Pandan. This was less than ideal due to various construction and development projects in the vicinity that obstructed waterways and made it difficult to carry out boating, sailing, and rowing activities. About a decade later, when the river was dammed to form Pandan Reservoir, RSYC staff and members also had to contend with dangerous floodwater discharge from the barrage upstream that caused boats to break free from their moorings. Nevertheless, the club stayed at the Sungei Pandan site for 34 years until 1999, when it moved to a new home not far away at our current location at West Coast. Previously popular mostly with joggers who enjoyed running around the tranquil waters, in recent years, Pandan Reservoir has been redeveloped under the Public Utilities Board's â&#x20AC;&#x153;Active, Beautiful, Cleanâ&#x20AC;? Waters programme to include facilities that have made it much more conducive for water sports activities. These include an amenities centre as well as offices housing the National Sports Associations for sailing, canoeing, and rowing, plus a new radio control sailing and electric boating deck and multiple fishing and viewing jetties. The reservoir has also been adopted by fishing tackle shop E-waves Fishbyte. They continue to help to keep the waters clean and educate the public about responsible fishing techniques such as using lures instead of live bait as well as practicing catch-and-release to avoid disrupting the ecosystem in the reservoir. At the reopening of the reservoir in July 2010, E-waves Fishbyte organised a fishing competition on the newly built fishing jetty to much fanfare and success, with guest-of-honour Mr S Iswaran, MP for West Coast GRC, joining in the festivities. It was a prime opportunity to introduce the public to the new facilities available at the reservoir and a launching pad for the exciting activities that were soon to commence at the reservoir.

Today, the Singapore Rowing Assocation uses Pandan Reservoir to hold their learn-to-row programmes as well as international regattas while the Singapore Canoe Federation conducts its canoe polo courses on its waters. The reservoir is also popular with anglers who visit the fishing jetties in the evening to unwind after a hard day's work. As a member, I am happy that RSYC, continuing its history with the area, has also decided to take advantage of the readily available facilities at Pandan Reservoir. It opened a Sea Sports Office in the amenities centre there, partnering with various MOE schools to conduct basic sailing courses. Most of the Club's dinghies have been moved there to facilitate its weekly dinghy sailing courses, held in conjunction with the Singapore Sailing Federation, for members. In addition to this, the Club also offers tailored sailing programs for team-building events upon request. Pandan Reservoir provides a controlled environment with flat waters that is ideal for beginner sailors due to the lack of boat traffic. Most recently, Pandan Reservoir hosted celebrations for Singapore World Water Day 2012. Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) sponsored by Sony were installed to provide shelter to smaller fishes in the water and ensure a balanced ecosystem, while a fishing demonstration and workshop was held for students and fledgling anglers to learn appropriate fishing procedures at the reservoir. Pandan Reservoir's transformation into a vibrant water sports arena marks a new stage in its life as it now not only provides Singapore with clean drinking water but also plays a vital role in cultivating a love of water sports among Singaporeans. RECENT EVENTS

The Art of Jewellery Making Mothers and daughters came together on a Saturday afternoon of 25 February 2012, for a demonstration of jewellery making in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. All were exploring their creativity through wire works and was impressed by the trainer's creativity and speed in completing a piece of jewellery. The trainer, Patricia, was all ready to share and impart her skills to our members and many were amazed and intrigue by her work-of-art, which include designs with pearls, semi-precious stones and wires. All took home a little creation of their own and requested for more classes on the different jewellery-making techniques. Indeed an eye-opener for all! Look out for the upcoming workshop this May. Staff Dinner & Dance 2012 RSYC staff had a wonderful time on Wednesday 18 April 2012 when they held their annual dinner and dance at the Nautica Ballroom. Several RSYC Committee members also showed up to lend their support, including Commodore Tan Kay Toh, David Cronin, Joseph Kwok and Wee Keng Hwee. To spice up the evening, some of our staff with hidden talents provided the entertainment in the form of a "talentime show" that was enjoyed by all. The D&D was also a fitting occasion for the Club to recognise those staff who have served RSYC well, with long service awards. Another highlight was the lucky draw, with the top prize of a travel voucher going to a lucky staff. All in all, it was a wonderful evening of fun for the staff.

Get Together at The Mess

The evening of Thursday 29 March and 26 April saw members at the Get Together at The Mess where they were able to unwind over few drinks and delectable complimentary snacks on the hour in the midst of good company. There was also a beer drinking challenge at 8pm plus free pool plays throughout the night. If you missed these nights, fret not as it will be held on every last Thursday of the month. So mark your calendars on 31 May and 28 June from 7.30pm to 10.00pm. Members pay only $3.00 for Tiger Beer, Dewar's White Label, Gordon Gin, Smirnoff Vodka, Sauza Tequila and Bacardi Rum by the glass, with complimentary nibbles plus all the fun and excitement.

Easter Sunday Brunch Sunday 8 April at The Bridge

It was a family affair. While the parents ate from a wonderful spread, the kids were entertained by our own Easter Bunny. The eggs-cited kids first tried their hands on painting eggs before joining the Easter morning egg hunt. On hand were also a face painter and magician cum balloon sculptor to entertain not only the kids but the adults as well.
