THE BIGGEST LITTLE TOWN FAIR IN TEXAS!
2012 Zapata County Fair Letter from the president
Dear friends and visitors: Welcome to Zapata County Fair! On behalf of the Zapata County Fair Association, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 40th Annual Zapata County Fair! The Association takes great pride in the work we do on behalf of the residents of Zapata County and of our many volunteers and staff members who spend countless hours working on the many areas of this annual event. We sincerely thank them for their hard work and dedication. There is much to see and do during this three-weekend festival. From our famous animal auctions, to the performances of our local youth, to the spectacular performances of Intocable, Duelo, Los Invasores de Nuevo Leon and many others. Also, don’t forget to try your favorite county fair food! These activities and many more are listed in the Official Zapata County Fair Program book. Please take the time to review it to ensure you don’t miss out on your county fair favorites. We thank you for your support of the Zapata County Fair and hope that your visit is fun filled and creates memories to last a lifetime. Be sure to let your friends and neighbors know what a great time you had at the Best Little Fair In Texas! Yours truly,
Carmen Paredes,
Zapata County Fair President

asking in its unique bicultural and binational ambiance, the Zapata County Fair showcases the very best that is Zapata County. From its spectacularly regal Queen Pageant to its exciting livestock competition, from the feasting up and down the midway to the thrilling carnival rides, the Zapata County Fair has something for everyone. Last year, the ZCF introduced new and enticing activities, designed to attract every member of the family. These included the electrifying Battle of the Bands, where three local and regional favorites vie for the chance to be crowned the top musical act in the area. This maiden event is sure to join the pantheon of beloved traditions held sacred by fair-goer. There are also some events that endure, such as the venerable trail ride, where participants channel their inner cowboy (or, if the case may be, cowgirl) in homage to that rich Texas tradition. Of course, what county fair would be complete without the music? The Zapata County Fair boasts an impressive line of boot-scooting Tejano favorites like Grammy Award winner Intocable, Los Invasores, Duelo and many others designed to keep everyone on the dance floor until the wee hours. Along with combining the best of the traditional county fair genre with new, innovative features, the Zapata County Fair also serves as the venue of choice for family reunions. Relatives and friends make the annual trek to Zapata to visit loved ones, often planning their trips around the dates of the fair. In fact, it’s been said that most family reunions happen while the fair is in town. It’s common to run into old friends and classmates while meandering through the midway. Friendships are renewed and relationships reconnected. No wonder the Zapata County Fair maintains a solid reputation as Texas’ unofficial family reunion capitol!

The Fairest of The Fair!

hey say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. At the Zapata County Fair, there is plenty of beauty to behold as seven of the county’s loveliest young ladies vie for the title of Queen. Elizabeth Karina Flores, Alyssa Gutierrez, Rebecca Quintanilla, Sofia Regalado, Andrea Ramirez, Daniella Lopez and Samantha Zepeda will compete in a lavish pageant for the right to preside over this year’s Zapata County Fair. The girls, all from Zapata High School, spend several weeks preparing for their big moment, as the Zapata County Fair Queen Pageant stands as one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the fair. The show-stopping production, one of the best in South Texas, features choreography and talent that rivals even the larger pageants. The girls perform high-stepping
dance numbers, both individually and as a group, and undergo dazzling costume changes that are designed to showcase their particular sense of style. They even face tough questions during the interview section, putting each young woman’s mettle to the test. In the end, one young lady’s dreams will be fulfilled as the outgoing Zapata County Fair Queen places the glittering crown on the winner’s head. “It’s a feeling that you never forget,” said Paola Marie Jasso, the 2011 Zapata County Fair Queen. “To be standing there as my family and friends were cheering and watching was just incredible. It’s a huge honor.” For one Zapata teenager, it will be a night she won’t soon forget. For the Zapata County Fair, long live the Queen!

Each of these Zapata County High School students are leaders, donating their time and giving back to the community. For them, the pageant is not only about outer beauty, but, inner beauty as well. Along with holding court over this year’s festivities, the new Queen will also represent Zapata in various events around South Texas, including parades in Laredo, Hebbronville and Corpus Christi. These seven lovely and talented young women represent the best that Zapata County has to offer. They are our pride and joy. They are Zapata through and through! Congratulations to you and the best of luck!!!

outcome determines which lucky young man will have the new Queen on his arm. These magnificent seven galanes, all from Zapata High School, represent the best that the community has to offer. Their appearance during the elaborate pageant will not be the only time that they will be seen about the fair. Many of them are also involved in various events, such as the livestock competition, staffing the various booths or other duties. Along with the seven beautiful Queen candidates, these dashing young escorts are Zapata’s future. Someday, these youth will take center stage as business men and women, elected officials and community leaders. The pageant marks their collective debut on Zapata’s grandest stage!

PAOLA MARIE JASSO
2011 Zapata County Fair Queen
I remember my childhood years as I enjoyed playing dress up and pretending to be a glamorous beauty queen.
T
hose moments in life are precious to me as my dream of being crowned Zapata County Fair. Becoming the 39th Zapata County Fair Queen has been a great accomplishment that has taught me new things in life which will help me grow in various ways. I feel it has helped me believe that with a good disposition and discipline anything and everything is possible. I thank everyone who helped me accomplish the dream of representing my home town in various events. My journey began in rehearsing my talent, choosing my alluring wardrobe and focus on becoming a good role model to all the young girls who, like me, had a dream of becoming a queen. As queen, I enjoyed participating in all the fun filled events that I will always remember and cherish every second of. The tea party, the trail ride, the bully dog show followed by live music performances, advertising for the “Best Little Fair in Texas” at Radio Stations and Television Networks, donating money to St. Jude’s hospital, the fair parade, the livestock auction, the vivacious carnival and the simple act of the community coming together to have a good time, visiting the different schools, the Jim Hogg County Fair and Parade, the Rattle
Snake Round-up, the Relay for Life, the Second Annual Roar by the Lake Poker Run, the Grand Opening of our Museum, the Christmas parade and the light up Christmas Ceremony, the Jamboozie, and last but not least, the George Washington Celebration Parade. I am honored to have taken part in all these thrilling events, and I can proudly say that I was glad to have been able to represent Zapata as queen. The wonderful memories of this year will stay with me forever. I would like to give thanks to the Queen’s Committee, and Zapata County Fair Association. A special thanks to Mrs. R. Martinez, and Miss. T. Uribe for their help, guidance and support, I truly appreciate all you’ve done for me. Most importantly I would want to give thanks to my family, friends, and loving parents Mr. & Mrs. Manuel & Belen Jasso for their unconditional love and always being there for me, I couldn’t off done it without you. I love you all!! Once again, thank you. Best wishes to the new queen and her court, may you enjoy every second of your reining year as I did, and I hope everyone can join us at “The Best Little Fair in Texas”!!
