2016 Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame Honorees
Greetings From The President Dear Friends: This special year of 2016 marks the 41st anniversary of the founding of the Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame and we are proud to continue this heritage that has thrived ever since a small group of Laredo’s dedicated leaders joined together in 1974 to assure the promotion of the contributions by Latinos in the sports world and in our culture. The Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame, throughout these 40 years, has grown in prestige and many legendary sports figures and personalities have graced our presence, including boxing greats, baseball heroes and coaching legends. The Class of 2016 is special as we honor pioneers, individuals who have set the standards high and have dismantled stereotypes while becoming champions on and off the field, court or track. Although we pay tribute to these legends and their great contributions by preserving their names in the records for our Hall of Fame, they in turn honor us greatly by being here with us.
Andres Ramos, Jr., President
Today, even more than ever, we continue to strive to fulfill our dream of establishing a Latin Sports Hall of Fame Museum that would be the first of it’s kind in the US and will serve to offer people a close up view of the invaluable treasures collected throughout the years. Visitors will soon be provided the opportunity to view the pictures of our honorees and study some of the memorabilia that relives the historical moments at the upcoming Hall of Fame Center. This would not have been possible without the generous support of the Benavides family who will be providing us with their building in historic downtown Laredo. To them, we are eternally grateful. Our deepest gratitude goes to all who have supported us throughout the last forty years and have helped keep this grand project alive. It is because of our supporters that all this is possible. We look forward to the continued sharing of our culture and accolades to be bestowed to the future generations. Adelante! Andres “Andy” Ramos President

He was on the Texas A&M University Kingsville Javalina football squad for four seasons 1997-2000. He even went further and excelled in track and field winning the NCAA Division II title in the shot put in 2000 after a third place finish in 1999. He won the Lone Star Conference titles in the discus 1999 and shot put in 2000 to earn Most Valuable Men’s field performer honors. However, they fell short of the championship losing 29-17 to the Indianapolis Colts. Among the almost 1,700 National League players in the 2006 season, Garza was one of only 19 Hispanics. Garza became a free agent after the 2013 season, but was resigned to a 1-year contract on February 27, 2014. On April 2, 2015, Garza was released by the Bears, ending a ten-year tenure. McFarland High School Cougars 1987 Cross Country Team “To the Top” For eight young men what seemed like an impossibility turned into a concrete reality when they became California’s Division 3 1987 State Champion Cross Country team. Making them the first all Latino California State Champions in Cross Country. Prior to the 1987 season the team made specific goals . 1st was to win the West Sierra League championship. 2nd was to win the South Area championship. 3rd was to win the Central Section championship to qualify them for the State Championship Meet. These were the competitions leading up to the State Meet. All their goals were represented by small mountains one bigger than the other leading up to the peak of the biggest mountain, The state Championship. “To the Top”; became their motto that season. These young men worked in the fields and struggled with family dynamics and discrimination, often taking on adult responsibilities upon their young shoulders., Yet, nothing deterred them from reaching their goal of becoming champions. Coach White helped mold the eight young men into champions. He mentored
Coach Jim White
them, pushed them to the limits and taught them that education would be their vehicle to a better life. He understood the challenges that they faced as migrant farm workers, laboring in the heat and cold, struggling to help their parents make ends meet. Despite the adversities, White held the team together and led them to their ultimate victory, establishing a dynasty of Cross Country excellence that continues to this day. In 2015, the heroics of both coach and team were captured in an inspiring movie, McFarland USA. The film documented the team’s many obstacles as well as its steadfastness and determination in reaching the state championship. Today, the team continues to live in McFarland, each contributing to their beloved community in different capacities. Coach Jim White led the Cougars to 9 state titles. Now retired he is a motivational speaker. Thomas Valles, the lead runner is a correctional officer for the California State Prison system. Johnny Samaniego is a PE teacher who assumed the role after Coach White. Jose Cardenas, U.S. Army, Staff Sergeant. Damacio Diaz is a police officer/detective. William “Willie”Valls Track
The youngest of 10 children born to Antonio Valls and Rafaela Mendiola Valls, William “Willie” Valls grew up near Downtown Laredo where he was exposed to football, basketball, baseball and track. He learned to love sports by watching his brothers participate in various events.
Willie Valls
Track Martin High School 1943-1948 University of Texas 1951-1952
Like his brothers before him, Willie began his sporting career at Martin High School where he lettered in football and track. Of the two sports, he particularly excelled in track, setting records in the 120-high hurdles at the Robstown Relays at 14.9 seconds and then at the Conference Meet, posting a time of 14.5 seconds. These records stood for many years. Although he suffered a couple of setbacks at the state meet, it did not deter him from furthering his track career at Laredo Community College. His speed caught the eye of Coach Clyde Littlefield, the legendary track coach at the University of Texas at Austin. He offered Willie a scholarship to run for the Longhorns and he quickly developed into Texas’ top high hurdler. UT had the world record sprint relay team in 1952 and the track team was invited to many meets across the country. Even though Willie wasn’t the fastest sprinter on the team, Littlefield took him to the meets anyway because of his ability to run the curve on the third leg. Willie had one more year of eligibility at UT and look forward to finishing his career as a Longhorn, however, he sustained a career-ending hamstring muscle injury to his right leg at the Border Olympics in Laredo. Nonetheless, he ended his career as a record-setting sprinter for Martin High School and a top running talent at the University of Texas at Austin. After a stint in the US Air Force, Willie returned to Laredo where he married his beloved Minerva Ramon, a teacher at Martin High School. He then embarked on a career with the Texas Employment Commission that lasted 30 years and yielded many awards and honors for him. Willie believes that his time training, practicing and participating in great sports programs helped him to develop incredible management skills that enabled him to achieve great things in his professional career. Now retired, he and his wife live in Cedar Park, Texas. Together, they have a daughter and a son, and four grandchildren.

Dr. Jane Cigarroa Unzeitig Alpine Mountain Climber Mt. Kilimanjaro/European Alps 2000s to Present
Dr. Jane Cigarroa Unzeitig Mountain Climbing
One can say that the song “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” could have very well been written for Dr. Jane Cigarroa Unzeitig. During the past 10 years, the Laredo doctor has scaled the heights, going to the Mt. Everest Base Camp, climbing the legendary Mt. Kilimanjaro and scaling both the New Zealand Alps and the European Alps, for the latter, making the trek from France to Italy to Switzerland. She also trekked through Three Sisters and Katoomba Falls in Australia, the Torres del Paine in Patagonia and the Glacier National Park. “The key for me is the enjoyment of exercise, the social interaction with different people and the great expectation of new trails to explore,” Unzeitig explained. When planning a trek or a climb, Unzeitig notes that physical conditioning must be optimized and that means “working out, not just for fun, but with a goal in mind.” Indeed, Unzeitig remains active even off the trail. An avid sportswoman, she takes to the Inner City Pool for a 6:00AM swim several times a week and, by her estimation, can “still do a decent flip turn.” For Unzeitig, swimming stands as a lifelong passion. She took to the water as a youngster, swimming at the downtown Boys and Girls Club and participating in water shows organized by Estela Kramer. Competitive swimming got the 1972 J.W. Nixon High School graduate to Northwestern University where she swam for the “Wet and Wildcats” throughout her two years there. Along with aquatics, Unzeitig also enjoys playing tennis. She plays at least twice per week and participates in tournaments all over the State of Texas. Locally, the tournaments are sponsored by United High School, the Laredo Country Club and the Laredo Tennis Association. “I have competed at the UTSA events for several years, advancing my ranking to the current 3.5 level,” she said. She and her sister Marti de Llano have even won a few tournaments. Being over four decades older than most of their competition, the sisters believe that strategy and experience trump physical agility. “Competitive sports, hiking, trekking, swimming and all outdoors activities have been a great outlet for me, and a key to maintaining good health,” Unzeitig said. Even though, by her own estimation, she has never excelled at any sport, Unzeitig exemplifies the goal of persistence in athletic activity as well as in attempting new challenges at every age.
Congratulations
Dr. Jane Cigarroa Unzeitig for your induction into the Latin Sports Hall of Fame Your Laredo Fans. Keep Climbing!

Manuel Hinojosa
Sports Ambassador
This year’s Sports Ambassador stands as a true Renaissance man: architect, artist, collector and historian. Manuel Hinojosa’s lifelong mission remains the preservation of sports history and memorabilia in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and, in some cases, beyond. A graduate of Mission High School, Hinojosa earned his degree in Art from Pan American University (now the University of Texas-Pan Am). He then went on to earn his degree in Architecture from the University of Southern Louisiana in Lafayette. Now in his 38th year of practice, he serves as a partner at the distinguished ROFA Architects in McAllen, Texas. While he has received numerous accolades for his architectural work, including being named a distinguished Fellow of the American Institute of Architecture (FAIA) in 2009, his greatest passion comes in the preservation of sports history for his community. He uses his artistic talents to capture the careers of many famous sports icons. His paintings have attracted the likes of Beckett Magazine, which has printed various pieces including his renderings of Mickey Mantle, David Robinson and Dan Marino. In fact, he also created an impressive sports museum housing many of his autographed paintings collected over the last three decades. His crowning glory remains the Tom Landry Mural housed in Mission, Texas. Two Mission residents, Bill and En Long commissioned Hinojosa to create the massive 95 x 18 foot mural to honor Landry’s Legacy. On September 18, 1995, the retired legendary Cowboys coach himself traveled to personally dedicate the mural and it remains a popular tourist attraction to this day. Hinojosa and his wife Norma Tamez Hinojosa as well as his brother serve as the owners of a sports museum and restaurant named Doubleday’s Sports Bar and Museum in Port Isabel, Texas. The establishment exhibits the largest sports memorabilia in Texas, showcasing over 100 of Hinojosa’s paintings autographed by some of the sporting world’s most revered icons. His interest and pursuit for the preservation of the region’s sports history led to the creation of the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame Museum which is now housed at Doubleday’s. It serves to recognize those who have contributed to the history of sports in the Rio Grande Valley.

Hector J. Noyola
Boys & Girls Club Director Promoter of Youth Activities 1970s – Present
For 44 years, Hector J. Noyola has been the driving force behind the Boys and Girls Club of Laredo. Thanks to his leadership, thousands of Laredo’s youth have received mentoring and a solid social foundation. Noyola is no stranger to working with youth. He taught school for 13 years prior to assuming the helm of the Boys and Girls Clubs. Born and reared in Laredo, Noyola attended LISD schools, having graduated from Martin High School in 1961 and going off to Laredo Community College where he earned an Associate of Arts. He then went on to Texas A & I Kingsville (now Texas A & M – Kingsville) where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Education. Under Noyola’s guidance, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Laredo have offered countless youth exposure to diverse after-school activities, primarily in the realm of sports. From swimming to boxing, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Laredo have exposed youth to positive, life-affirming activities that help them not only stay off the streets, but also help them in their overall development. Many Laredoans have fond memories of using Boys and Girls Clubs facilities, of participating in inner-city basketball leagues and swim meets. In fact, many Boys and Girls Clubs alumni have become today’s leaders within Laredo and beyond. All of this is thanks to the guidance provided by Mr. Noyola through his work with the organization. Along with directing the Boys and Girls Clubs of Laredo, Noyola also serves as a Board Member for the Laredo Independent School District as well as a member of the Workforce Solutions Board. He also serves on the Angel of Hope, Inc., Board. In 1999, he served as the Parade Marshall for the Washington’s Birthday Celebration Youth Parade. The following year, LULAC bestowed on him the Tejano Achiever Award. The Texas House of Representatives honored him as an Outstanding Community Leader in 2005 and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America named him as a top administrator. He ranks as a Tiger Legend, Class of 2011. State Rep. Richard Peña Raymond presented him with the “Future of Texas Award” in 2014. Noyola is the father of three children, Veronica Yvette, Clarissa Laura and Hector, Jr., all of whom are LISD educators and is the proud grandfather of five.
Congratulations Mr. Noyola
Thank you for your support and encouragement! From the Kids at the Laredo Boys & Girls Clubs
Carlos Chale P. Peña “Old Timers” Baseball
Carlos “Chale” P. Peña could certainly swing and sing with the best of them, on both sides of the Rio Grande. Born in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico on November 4, 1928, to Librado and Francisca Peña, the legendary Mexican swingman was orphaned at the age of 17 and supported himself by working odd jobs. As a young man, he developed a deep love for baseball. He played the local Mexican circuit, traveling to different cities in both Mexico and the United States to play ball. In 1949, the Tecolotes de Nuevo Laredo came calling on the 21-year-old, launching his professional baseball career. Two years later, he played with Los Diablos Rojos de Mexico and then he went on to play for the Tigers of Richmond, Texas in 1952. A year later, the Tecolotes called him back to play catcher. That year, the Tecolotes clinched the Bicampeonato. He continued playing baseball for six more years until he suffered a career-ending broken foot while trying to catch a foul ball. In the intervening years, he married Maria Teresa Montante, his childhood sweetheart. The couple had three children, two sons, Carlos and Guillermo and a daughter, Maria Teresa. The couple was married close to 50 years until 1999 when his beloved Maria died. Chale traded in his swingman profession for singing, as music became his second passion. He became well known in Laredo music circles for his beautiful voice and talented rendition of classic Latin American songs. In fact, he was a member of several trios in his lifetime and ultimately became a solo artist, performing in diverse forums in Laredo. He became the heart and soul of the “Coro de Colores”, a choir dedicated to Cursillo Movement in the Catholic Church. In 2000, Chale married Maria Rosales and moved to San Antonio where he continued singing and playing. He maintained an avid interest in baseball, especially the Mexican League, and was known for his encyclopedic memory for players and statistics. Chale died in August 2014 at the age of 84; however, he leaves a legacy of baseball and musical prowess that continues today. He is preceded in death by his wife Maria Teresa Peña and his son Guillermo Peña. He is survived by his son Carlos Peña Jr., daughter Maria Teresa Lopez, 5 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Adriana Gonzalez de Rodriguez
August 13, 1986 – August 29, 2015 The late Adriana Gonzalez de Rodriguez had a passion for running. In fact, her husband recalls that their first date involved running. She enjoyed the sport so much that she would enter as many marathons as possible, including the Austin Biggest Loser half-marathon and the Beach to Bay relay marathon. She even ran the Laredo Relay half-marathon when she was just a few weeks pregnant with her son, Diego. After her son’s birth, she returned to running. She enjoyed training at San Isidro Park. Adriana had a deep love for the sport, but, she also had a deep love for her family and for her profession, teaching. She went above and beyond the call of duty for her students, especially those with special needs. She was equally as devoted and passionate towards her family Adriana had plans for competing in even more marathons, including the Ultra Marathon in Blanco, Texas, and was, in fact, training for a full marathon in San Antonio when tragedy struck. Nonetheless, Adriana will always be remembered for her dedication, determination and love.
Monica Pastrana Monica took up running as a means of losing weight after the birth of her two children She worked her way up from walking to running and grew to love the sport. Her perseverance saw her drop close to 50 pounds, going from 160 to 110 on her 5’1” frame. She looked at running as a way of setting the example of a healthy lifestyle for her children. It became a driving force for her passion for fitness in general. Along with running, Monica also engaged in weight training, high intensity interval training and yoga as a means of developing her ability to run as well as develop her overall fitness. She even included swimming as part of her daily regimen. On that fateful day of the accident, Monica was training for her second full marathon. Nonetheless, during her road to recovery, she has begun to gradually regain her stride, having participated in several events, including a Run for Scholarships in memory of her friend Adriana Gonzalez de Rodriguez where she completed her first three mile walk after the accident, the Flat Creek Estates 5K, the Marble Falls Run/Walk and the LBA 5K Run in honor of Kari, her first full 5K after the accident. She dedicates the remainder of her participation in marathons and races to her two beloved friends and running companions, cherishing their memories forever.
Karina M. Villarreal
October 25, 1982 – August 29, 2015 She was an educator who believed that everyone was entitled to quality education. In the classroom, her dedication to achieve this was equal to none. In the community, she was always supportive of any project that would enable a person to achieve his or her life’s dream. Karina believed that to achieve the maximum learning experience, one had to be healthy of mind and body. Personally, she chose running. She believed running was a healthy way to release stress and acquire confidence and self-esteem. She was relentless in her training and dreamed of running in many events. She encouraged many others to do so by example not just by words. It was her dream to see a community of runners that espoused her desire to nourish the body as a catalyst to positively develop the minds of young children. Karina too was training for a marathon, along with her running buddies on the day of the accident.
Sadly missed along life’s way, quietly remembered every day... No longer in our life to share, but in our hearts, you’re always there. FROM THE LATIN AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL SPORTS HALL OF FAME

About The Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame In the United States, there are Sports Halls of Fame that honor professional and amateur athletes in football, basketball, track, tennis, baseball and other sports. There are also ethnic halls of fame that recognize outstanding athletes from different groups including Italian, Jewish, Irish and blacks to name a few. But, there was not a single sports hall of fame that would recognize, honor and salute the outstanding accomplishments1achievements and contributions of our Latino/Hispanic Sports Heritage not only from the United States but also those who came to this country from Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Central and South America and from the vast talent from the Caribbean Islands. The Latin-American International Sports Hall of Fame/Salon de Ia Fama Latinoamericano del Deporte was organized in Laredo, Texas in 1974. At first it was to celebrate, honor and promote local and regional individuals who had excelled at their particular sport but soon it opened the doors to include National and International Professional Athletes. It also recognizes as Sportsman of the Year individuals who continue to preserve and enhance our Latino culture, values and educational opportunities for our youth and who contribute to the betterment of the City of Laredo and South Texas. There have been since its inception an equal recognition of women athletes inductees. It was important to find role models for our youth and the organizers wanted to include all ages, regardless of sex in their programs. The Latin Hall was also created to promote economic development and stimulate business activity in downtown Laredo when local businesses are contracted to provide services to our inductees, their families and guests who visit Laredo during the annual 3-day welcome reception, media luncheon and induction banquet celebration weekend. Through the years. (1975-2014), and with limited amount of funds the organization has, had the opportunity to help the youth of our community with scholarships and other youth activity fundraisers. Plans are to have a Latin Sports International Hall of Fame Museum (downtown) (soon) which will be a first for the United States and to provide clinics (free of charge) to instruct our youth in different sports. Pitin Guajardo Director
