, Texas Laredo Your Celebration Destination We welcome you to the City of Laredo’s 120th Washington’s Birthday Celebration™, your celebration destination.

W

ith more than 500,000 attendees and continually growing every year, the annual George Washington’s Birthday Celebration™ is one of the biggest events that contributes to Laredo’s history and a must see in South Texas!

Since 1898 this celebration has grown tremendously and has helped spread the international goodwill between neighboring countries and its people. It all began in 1898 when the Improved Order of the Red Men sought to embrace the unique influences that make Laredo a gem deep in the heart of the Texas border. The Order wanted to unite the City of Laredo in celebration of its American, Native American and Mexican ancestry. After extensive research, they discovered that the first president of the United States of America, George Washington, was part of the Improved Order of Red Men, a Sachem. A second historical figure, Princess Pocahontas, was added as part of the commemoration. The Red Men staged an Indian raid at city hall where the mayor was held captive. It was Princess Pocahontas who saved the lives of the mayor and the rest of the crew in that staged battle. In gratitude, the mayor gave Pocahontas the key to the city

The Society of Mart

For one magical evening, Laredo transforms herself into colonial Mount Vernon.

T

he Society of Martha Washington’s signature event, one of the most beloved of the Washington’s Birthday Celebration, transports its audience to a time and place that is sacred to American history: colonial Mount Vernon during the time of General George and Martha Dandridge Washington. As the houselights dim, all eyes focus on center stage as unseen narrators lead the captivated audience through a theatrical scene in the life of the Washingtons, be it a victory gala hosted by Washington for his generals, or a special soiree that he and Martha are hosting for foreign dignitaries. As part of the Society’s long tradition, George and Martha Washington make a grand entrance, both dressed in spectacular fashion. The couple is greeted with a loud

28 / wbcalaredo.org

applause from the audience. As they stroll along the stage for their grand promenade, the intricate details of both costumes are on full display from all angles. As the first couple reaches center stage, they bow and curtsey to the crowd, acknowledging their admirers and beckoning them to enter into their world for at least one night. Then, one by one, fifteen beautiful Society of Martha Washington debutantes each dressed in equally exquisite ball gowns, make their way on to the stage escorted by handsome young men in colonial attire. Each debutante and escort are introduced by name and by the names of the historical personalities they are portraying. As they reach George and Martha at center stage, each acknowledges the First Couple with a curtsey from her and a bow from him. After the introductions, George and Martha lead their party in a

gracefully choreographed minuet or waltz. The grace from each couple is a sight to behold. The dresses seem to take on a life of their own as the spot light catches the elegant designs formed from the carefully selected fabrics and magnificent beading. After the elaborate pageant concludes, guests are invited to attend the Colonial Ball where George and Martha Washington, the debutantes, and their escorts can freely mingle with guests. Family members and friends alongside honored guests from around the country, attend the Ball for an up close view of the magnificent dresses that are each a unique piece of art. Now in its 77th year, the Society of Martha Washington Colonial Pageant and Ball continues to thrill audiences with its unique theatrical pageantry and subsequent ball. Come see Laredo’s moment to shine.

The International Bridge Ceremony brings dignitaries from both sides of the border, both American and Mexican as they walk to the middle

Anheuser-Busch Washington’s Birthday Parade Thousands gather each year as they come from all over Texas and surrounding areas to enjoy the Anheuser-Busch Washington’s Birthday Parade.

T

he highlight of the Washington’s Birthday Celebration and one of the oldest and most anticipated events is the Anheuser-Busch Washington’s Birthday Parade. The majestic Budweiser Clydesdales make an unforgettable appearance. George and Martha Washington, marching bands, spectacular floats, and beautiful debutantes parade through the historic streets of Laredo. The WBCA™ Parade dates back to 1898, the beginning of the WBCA™ festivities where the founding organizers of the Celebration, the Order of the Red Men entertained captive audiences with a mock “siege” of Laredo City Hall. As part of this mock dramatization, the heroic Princess Pocahontas rescued the captive Laredo Mayor and was awarded the ceremonial Key to the City. The Mayor of Laredo continues this gift giving tradition and hands each Princess Pocahontas the Key to the City every year at the start of this annual parade. The graceful George and Martha Washington debutantes and escorts have also established a tradition of their own and every year surprise parade gatherers with creative footwear – a special treat for when spectators shout out “show us your shoes.” Clowns and walking acts stroll down the streets of Laredo and delight spectators both young and young at heart.
