Mountain Biking

Mankato offers five mountain biking trails to explore for experienced riders and biking newbies.

North Star Bicycle Festival

Ft. LeHillier Trail

Mankato continues to be a great place to spend time on a bike. As cycling grows and becomes more popular with people of all ages and abilities, the city is expanding the miles of designated bike lanes and getting around town on a bike is more practical.

Open mid-May through October, this 2.2-mile public-use mountain bike trail is located at the intersection of Highways 66 and 90 just south of Mount Kato. Maintained by the Mankato High School Cycling Team, this trail is a great spot for the kids to try out mountain biking.

Indian Lake Conservation Area

Indian Lake Conservation Area is a 120-acre regional park that provides an outstanding recreational and environmental resource. The park, located south of Mankato on Indian Lake Road, melds environmental and recreational amenities. It offers a multi-use trail system which circles Indian Lake and connects with other regional trails.

Kiwanis Mountain Bike Trail & Skills Park

Built and maintained by the Mankato Area Mountain Bikers club, Kiwanis Mountain Bike Trail & Skills Park was named one of Minnesota’s “20 Popular Fat Bike Trails You’ve Never Heard Of” by Singletracks, this park offers five miles of mountain biking fun in addition to a new skills park. Located just north of the Hwy 169 and Hwy 14 intersection north of Mankato, the park also offers dog park areas, a canoe/kayak area and an archery range.

Mount KatoMM

Before the snow flies and after it melts again, Mount Kato turns its attention to mountain biking. Slightly more than seven miles of mountain bike trails are accessible during the non-winter months.

Seven Mile Creek Trail

Our Greater Mankato Biking and Hiking Guide offers a bike map for beginning bikers to experienced riders on both trails and country roads. Download your guide today online at visitmankatomn.com or call 507-385-6660 to be mailed a map.

Join a local ride

Local rides are scheduled Monday through Thursday nights by different groups and are open to anyone who wants to join in the fun and exercise. The schedule is posted on Visit Mankato’s website on the biking page under Group Rides.

Seven Mile Park is a 628-acre county park located off Highway 169 between North Mankato and St. Peter. There are eight miles of multi-use trails with North Mankato Tri equestrian parking and a highway underpass. Several footbridges cross Seven Mile Creek. Mankato is proud to be designated a “bronze” Bike Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, Washington D.C.

LOCAL TIP

Road biking is very accessible with the various trails that surround our city and the area. Bikers can enjoy time outdoors riding on the Sakatah Trail, Red Jacket Trail and the open roads that offer challenging hills and inspiring views of our community, river and landscape. Sibley Park offers beautiful roads and paths right in our own city. Riders can be found riding south across the Red Jacket Trestle Bridge to the Rapidan Dam, or heading west to enjoy Minneopa State Park and the majestic waterfalls, and the scenic Judson Bottom Road. Leaving town to the east and north begins many adventures on county roads that are popular with bikers. Mountain biking is growing in popularity, both with adults and students. Mankato Composite Cycling Team is for riders in 7th – 12th grade and they compete with other teams across our state. Mount Kato was the site of the State Championship in October of 2017. Riders of all ages are using the Kiwanis Recreation Area, with new trails added each year. Seven Mile Creek Park is another destination for great mountain biking. My favorite part of biking is being part of the group rides in Mankato. Our biking community has grown close because of the weekly rides that include riders of all abilities. The local bike shops host rides each week, and they include options that vary from a simple 30-minute family ride, to fast- paced 50+ mile rides, and everything in between. Afterwards, riders gather at a local restaurant for refreshments and great conversation. As I travel around the state each week, I have become aware that Mankato has one of the strongest biking communities in Minnesota. Most weekends I ride with friends and we usually include a stop at the Rapidan Dam Store for pie. Life is great on a bike, so get out and I will see you on the road.

LOCAL TIP Cherise and Matthew Barker Family of 5

Our family comes from a big city in California, so we were pleasantly surprised to experience all Mankato has to offer. We love spending time outdoors, and that doesn’t change across the seasons. When the weather is warm, you will find our family at Sibley Park, enjoying the animals and the farm-themed playground. We also enjoy going for a swim at the Tourtellotte Pool, which has a splash pad for the younger kids and a slide for the older ones. In the winter, you will find us either outdoors, sledding on Sibley Hill, or in the warm indoors at River Hills Mall, which has a play area for the younger kids. The Sakatah Singing Hills Trail is great year-round. We use it for running, biking, and walking, but there are also snowshoe and cross-country trails for the winter, and much more.

Chesley Skate Park is the place for youth to socialize with others who are just as enthusiastic about skating. Rental of helmets, pads and skateboards are available for your use.

Is the outdoors not your thing? Check out the Verizon Center downtown. We have enjoyed a few concerts there. It is a fantastic venue for Mankato, and there are also plenty of restaurants nearby to satisfy your hunger before or after an event. There are also various small retailers that help on days when it is just too cold. We enjoy Bounce Town so the kids can burn off some energy, the Wow! Zone where our family can get in a competitive game of bowling or mini golf, and we are really looking forward to ARTifact, a paint your own pottery studio, opening in Mankato’s City Center. One of the best things about Mankato are the events held here. The Mankato Marathon is fun for the whole family. There is bacon served for the 5k participants, KidsK for the kids, and a beautiful run for the marathon races! LOCAL TIP Mike Lagerquist

Board Secretary Twin Rivers Council for the Arts The Greater Mankato area has started creating a name for itself in the area of film and play competitions. Thanks to the Speechless Film Festival, started in 2013 and coordinated by Bethany Lutheran College, amateur and professional filmmakers from around the world recognize now the Mankato name. Through the hard work of Greg Abbott and his MN Shorts Festival, which is celebrating its 10th annual event in 2018, the same can be said for original short plays. The mission of the three-day spring Speechless Film Festival is “to foster cross-cultural engagement through the celebration of visual storytelling, a creative endeavor rooted deeply in the history of cinema. Visual storytelling transcends a wide variety of film genres including documentary, animation, drama, experimental, etc.” In 2017, Speechless moved to the Verizon Center in downtown Mankato, where attendees walked easily between several screening rooms to enjoy films presented every 75 minutes. Different festival passes made attending easier, and provided some behind-the-scenes and special event access. The sixth annual Speechless Film Festival will be April 12-14, 2018. The 2018 MN Shorts festival on Sept. 6 & 7 will bring back 14 of the favorite plays from the first 10 years, so no play submissions will be sought. In years past, hundreds of submitted original plays were read to determine those to be presented over two nights. Locals were selected to direct and star in the plays, with audience members each night choosing the winner.

In 1880, Mankato was the fourth largest city in Minnesota with a population of 5,500. Today, more than 50,000 people call Mankato and North Mankato home. In 1852, Parsons K. Johnson and Henry Jackson staked claims along these banks and founded the town of Mankato along the banks of the Minnesota River. The city was established on land purchased in a treaty between the U.S. government and the Dakota; the breaking of this treaty by the government led to the U.S.-Dakota Conflict of 1862. North Mankato, which sits just across the river, was established in 1898. The first bridge between North Mankato and Mankato was the Veteran’s memorial Bridge, an iron truss bridge constructed in 1879. The bridge represented an interdependence and partnership between the cities that continues. Today, many memorials and buildings exist to commemorate the diverse and important history that has shaped the Greater Mankato area. Mankato and North Mankato have many historical attractions that are must-sees for visitors.

Scott & Lisa Wojcik Family of 6

Although neither of us grew up in the Greater Mankato Area or Minnesota, we fell in love with this area after Lisa went to graduate school at Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU) and have chosen to make Mankato home for our family. We were both college athletes and Scott played professional football in Germany and the Indoor Football League, so one of the things that we love about the area are the many opportunities to both participate in and attend sporting events. Our four boys Konnor (15), Riston (12), Braxton (9), and Keaton (9) have been involved with baseball, soccer, football, bowling, and basketball over time. In addition, we’re very pleased with the opportunities that exist for our oldest son and other community members with special needs to participate in a variety of adapted sports and Special Olympics sporting events. Our summer months revolve around baseball with our boys and camping when we can. You will also find us at Franklin Rogers Park cheering on the Mankato MoonDogs every chance we get! We are a host family for a player and have thoroughly enjoyed adding another ‘son’ to our family during the summer months. We also love to catch MSU, Mankato men’s and women’s basketball games, football games, hockey games and volleyball games at some great local sporting venues including the Taylor Center, Verizon Center, and Blakeslee Stadium! We also frequent Mankato East High School football, basketball, and adapted bowling contests as well. Sports have been a big part of our lives over time and we believe we are instilling that love of sports and the values that go with it in our boys as well.

Minnesota bands perform in the community favorite Songs on the Lawn (June) and Alive After Five (August) outdoor concert series in Civic Center Plaza. The Old TownMM Art Fair (September) also features lots of local music, along with unique and compelling art in a relaxed outdoor atmosphere. Holidays bring special celebrations. Mankato’s Red, Hot, Boom in Riverfront Park features music by the Mankato Symphony Orchestra and, of course, fireworks. Both the Betsy-Tacy houses and the R.D. Hubbard House offer views of Christmas past during December events. The annual Kiwanis Holiday Lights display in Sibley Park runs from the day after Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve and is ranked as one of Minnesota’s top holiday lights experiences.

CityArt The CityArt program, a collaboration of the City Center Partnership and the Twin Rivers Council for the Arts, provides thrilling public art experiences for City Center residents and visitors. They include: CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour

The CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour is an exciting rotating exhibit of outdoor sculptures displayed year-round in the City Centers of Mankato and North Mankato. Artists from around the world display their sculptures, and from May to October, you can vote for your favorite. The People’s Choice-winning sculpture is then purchased for permanent installation in the City Center. For a tour map, visit www.cityartmankato.com.

CityArt On the Go

CityArt on the Go is an exhibit of 20 traffic signal box murals. Pedestrians and drivers enjoy seeing something different about the traffic signal boxes in the City Center, as infrastructure is transformed into colorful art.

CityArt Public Art Tour

The CityArt Public Art Tour is a selfguided walking tour of over 35 unique pieces of art, including the People’s Choice Award winners from previous Walking Sculpture Tours and the new Mni Mural and Kites mural. Learn more and find a map at cityartmankato.com.

ARTS & CULTURE Greater Mankato boasts a thriving arts community, with five public art galleries, three dance companies, four community choruses, the symphony orchestra and theatre group. In addition, area colleges offer outstanding, theater, music, dance, and visual and written arts programs. While strolling around the City Center, art is all around you with the annual CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour. A new City Center art attraction in 2016 is the Mni Mural, Mankato’s Flood Wall Mural. “Mni” means “water” in the Dakota language. The mural reminds the community that this is a river town.
