Any visit to The Prairie State should definitely begin with a trip to Chicago and a chance to shop (almost!) around the clock in ‘that toddlin’ town’. Then, head out into the many neighbourhoods that make up the Chicago scene. Sample the artsy streets of Bucktown and Wicker Park, or make for Lincoln Square, which has a great mix of independent and nationally-known stores selling everything from toys to tools and art to armchairs. Outside of Chicago, the nearby suburb of Long Grove is an eclectic shopping destination that’s both classic and contemporary, while in the north-west corner of the state, Galena’s historic downtown shops were voted ‘Best Main Street’ by Midwest Living Magazine. But if you are looking for something ‘uniquely Illinois’, the store in the Illinois State Museum in the state capital, Springfield (on the fabled Route 66 and the home of Abraham Lincoln), offers fine crafts by members of the Illinois Artisans Program. Sixty miles north-west of Springfield, the Dickson Mounds Museum Store in Lewiston also highlights Illinois’ hand-crafted textiles, ceramics, jewellery, baskets and woodworks. When it comes to a visit to The North Star State, one of the key attractions is arguably the USA’s greatest shopping centre, so the cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul should be at the very top of your agenda. Sitting just south of these two sparkling metropolises in suburban Bloomington is Mall of America®, the country’s biggest indoor shopping centre – and a lot more besides. Not only does the Mall encompass 520 stores, but it also boasts its own theme park – Nickelodeon Universe® – a cinema multiplex, a 1.2-million gallon aquarium, mini-golf, flight simulators, LEGO® kids’ adventure playground – and 50 places to eat. Cleveland should certainly be where you start your shopping journey into The Buckeye State. Its diverse neighbourhoods offer a wide variety of experiences – and a series of unique possibilities. Downtown has its marquee attraction, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where you can buy everything from a guitar-pick mouse pad to a 3D peace-sign guitar ornament, while other neighbourhoods offer opportunities for taking in the arts, dining and, of course, shopping. Little Italy, for example, has a good variety of art in its many galleries, while the Historic Warehouse District is a fine mix of dining and shops, including Constantino’s Market, a Mecca for foodies. The city’s West Side Market is also a haven for foodies, with more than 100 vendors offering everything from Vietnamese hot sauces to Spanish and Tunisian olive oils, as well as freshly-baked Polish pastries or crusty Tuscan bread. Ohio’s Amish community is the largest in the world, so shopping in Amish Country is a treat. Products are normally sold directly by their makers, so you can discover how your new quilt’s pattern has been passed down through the generations. Other popular Amish gifts include hand-crafted cheese, leather goods and metalwork. If pottery is your ‘thing’, you can find a huge range of historic and new pottery in Zanesville. One of the bestknown art pottery towns in the world, it has been producing rustic stoneware, art deco vases and functional tableware for 150 years.

Pennsylvania runs the full gamut, from large retail malls and expansive outlet centres to chic boutiques and fascinating artisan shops and galleries. Philadelphia offers exceptional cultural, dining, recreational and historic experiences, but for shoppers, the city is an absolute haven. www.MICHIGAN.ORG Get ready for a real shopping adventure in The Great Lakes state, where you can indulge your passion for fashion in one of the most upmarket centres in the Mid-West, rake in the bargains in top outlet centres, or browse some unique gift offerings in places such as Frankenmuth, Glen Arbor and Traverse City. As with most things in Michigan, you start in Detroit; or, more correctly, the suburb of Troy, just to the north. There you’ll find the superb Somerset Collection, a modern, eyecatching mall with a wonderful collection of luxury shops and department stores. The architecture alone is worth seeing. Another good mall can be found just to the west in Novi, where Twelve Oaks Mall boasts an excellent line-up of well-known names, while nearby, Twelve Mile Crossing at Fountain Walk offers more shopping, dining, a multiplex cinema and indoor mini-golf! But Michigan is not so much about the mall experience as the more individual and unusual. To the west of Detroit,

Ann Arbor has a downtown that offers great shopping for books, distinctive food – it has chocolate and cupcake boutiques – hand-made, upmarket clothing and some terrific art galleries. Head north and you find charming Frankenmuth. There, Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland – the ‘world’s largest Christmas store’ – is a major draw, along with the other period shops and styles of ‘Michigan’s Little Bavaria’, with the famous Bavarian Inn taking you ‘into the heart of Germany’ while you are still in Michigan. In the north of Michigan, just off the coast between the state’s Upper and Lower Peninsula, lies Mackinac Island. A wonderful Victorian-styled getaway, the island is famous for its fudge, horse-drawn carriages and excellent shopping. Then, turning south along the coast of Lake Michigan, the old frontier settlement of Traverse City is a haven for artists and, hence, a treasure trove of arts and crafts. You won’t find many big-name brands there, but you will discover a veritable gold mine of small-scale artisans and speciality shops, notably the indoor marketplace of The Village at Grand Traverse Commons, housed in a collection of historic buildings. Nearby, the small town of Glen Arbor is a must-see for the truly eclectic Cherry Republic, a collection of shops, crafts and tastes, with freshly-baked goods and even ice cream dedicated to Michigan’s big annual cherry crop. Driving south down the Lake Michigan coastline, don’t miss the opportunity to call in at some of the distinctive beach towns en route, until you reach Harbor Country in the New Buffalo area, which features an array of galleries and quaint antique shops.

Designer names, local arts and crafts, and unique gifts and experiences can all be found in The Badger State, where big shopping – and bargains – can be tracked down in small towns as well major cities. Wisconsin’s largest city, Milwaukee, known for its cosmopolitan flair and rich brewing history, also has a lot for shoppers, especially at Mayfair Mall, an indoor emporium with 180 shops offering everything from high fashion to fashion jewellery. For a change of pace, the Historic Third Ward teems with trendy shops and galleries. Anchored by Milwaukee Public Market, the fashion scene is well represented, along with local artisans, gifts and even pet boutiques. Madison is another great city shopping stop, with chic Hilldale Shopping Center and its 60 upmarket shops. State Street is a pedestrian mall lined with eclectic speciality stores, while Monroe Street features more boutiques, galleries and unique treasures. Get out into the wide, open spaces and you’ll discover a wonderful range of small-scale delights, such as Door County, a charming corner of the state that is often referred to as the ‘Cape Cod of the Midwest’. It offers the opportunity as you tour the peninsula to hunt for treasures in galleries, museums and lighthouses and there is a huge variety of one-ofa-kind shops, such as the Rusty Rabbit Shop, or you could pick up some American folk art at Scrimshanders, both in North Ephraim. Mineral Point, named as one of a ‘Dozen Distinctive Destinations’ by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is a haven for art lovers, with potteries, galleries, antiques and its own brewery. Princeton’s Water Street district is flush with home-decorating and gift options, and its Famous Outdoor Flea Market runs from spring until autumn. There are also many Amish communities a short drive away, where you can pick up cabinetry, baked goods or beautiful quilts. Bayfield, nestled on the shore of Lake Superior by the beautiful Apostle Islands, is a big draw for nature lovers and nature-loving artists, notably with the driftwood carvings, hand-made soaps and paintings at the Bayfield Arts Guild and Eckels Pottery. Many of the town’s shop owners have created the handcrafted items and often have interesting stories to share about your selection. Finally, Racine’s downtown revitalisation has turned the area into one of the state’s finest art and boutique shopping destinations. In Wisconsin, you can mix your retail therapy with a fine taste of small-town America – because, ultimately, that’s what makes our Lakes great.

As befits its central location within The Hoosier State, Indianapolis is the heart of Indiana’s best shopping opportunities – with both famous department stores and smaller, moreboutique offerings – while elsewhere, arts and crafts abound. Start in Indianapolis by enjoying the big-mall experience at Circle Center, with its 100 or so stores – and the Indianapolis Artsgarden, which has more than 350 free performances and exhibits each year. Alternatively, head for the Fashion Mall at Keystone, where a unique mix of upmarket stores and luxury, speciality retailers make up its 95 shops. Nearby, Zionsville – pure Americana, with its bricked, paved, historic main street – hosts several fine art galleries, while the Carmel Arts & Design District, in Old Town Carmel, is home to speciality shops such as Joy of Raphael, a holistic wellness centre and natural pharmacy, and Kilpatrick Traditions, which offers furniture made by Amish craftsmen. The pleasant neighbourhood of Broad Ripple Village has several one-of-a-kind shops, including the Indy CD & Vinyl shop, Artifacts art gifts, Big Hat Books and the Rock & A Hard Place General Store. You should also visit the funky Fountain Square District, where vintage bowling alleys and antique shops stand alongside concert venues and art. One of the newest centres is Metropolis, a ‘modernurban’ development of outdoor shopping, restaurants and services, which offers big-name stores, including

JC Penney and Barnes & Noble, as well as speciality shops such as Hot Topic – with unique gifts and unusual accessories – and Lids, with traditional and unique hats for every occasion In northern Indiana, the tranquil worlds of Elkhart, Shipshewana (be sure to visit the Menno-Hof Museum), Middlebury and Nappanee are where you’ll find the Amish (people who travel by horse and cart, live without electricity, and sell quilts, woodworks and crafts in the many roadside shops). Das Dutchman Essenhaus (in Middlebury), with its distinctive gift shops and stores filled with unique treasures, and Amish Acres (in Nappanee), a restored 80-acre Old Order farmstead, are well worth visiting. Antique lovers should head to Indiana’s famous Antique Alley, a 33-mile stretch of the Old National Road, which has more than 900 antique dealers. The US’s largest antique mall is based in Centerville, and there are many intriguing antique and speciality shops there, too. Historic Huntingburg boasts a charming Victorian downtown area with a myriad of gift and craft shops, while Nashville, in Brown County – where one-of-a-kind stores such as the Coca-Cola Shop, which features everything from nostalgic Coca-Cola items to clothing, kitchen accessories, collectibles, signs and more – is known as the Artist Colony of the Midwest and features many galleries and unique shops tucked among the rolling hills. Once again, you’ll be spoiled for choice – and richly rewarded for getting off the beaten track to explore.
