Shopping – from glamorous, big-city style in Chicago’s Michigan Avenue (pictured here) to small-scale, more-boutique offerings – is a major feature of any visit to the Great Lakes

Virb

e Talk

The Great Lakes region has long been known for its wonderful scenery, fabulous cities, friendly people and active, outdoorsy style, but there is another aspect that the area does wonderfully well and is sure to be high on everyone’s list of things to do – shopping. The amazing variety and sheer value-for-money of its shopping opportunities has become one of America’s greatest attractions in recent years, and it is something that is firmly to the fore in the seven Great Lakes states. You can choose from the glamorous, big-city style of places like Chicago, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Minneapolis; the small-scale, more-boutique offerings of the region’s unique locations such as Amish country in Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania; the many distinctive markets, arts and crafts that abound here; the stylish offerings of big-name stores such as Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue; and the eye-catching bargains of the great, designer-name outlet stores, which are another stand-out feature of retail therapy in the USA. Very often, you will find all five – and more besides – within a short distance of each other and able to provide a rich and well-rounded shopping opportunity. And it’s all just another part of the great Great Lakes experience!

Any visit to The Prairie State should definitely begin with a trip to Chicago and a chance to shop (almost!) around the clock in ‘that toddlin’ town’. Because, outside of New York, this is one of America’s major shopping Meccas. Start with the glamour and glitz of The Magnificent Mile, a one-street wonderland of big-name retail therapy. From major fashion houses to trendy retailers, Michigan Avenue (as it should actually be called) fulfils just about every shopping fantasy. Whether it is ‘the little black dress’, the latest ‘it-bag’ or newest ‘gotta have’ gadget, The Magnificent Mile has it all – and some hotels, such as Chicago’s Essex Inn, offer free shuttles there and back for enthusiastic shoppers. Together with The Loop and Gold Coast, The Magnificent Mile makes a downtown shopping extravaganza. State Street forms the core of The Loop, where well-known names such as Filene’s Basement and Macy’s contrast with the likes of the Illinois Artisans Shop, which showcases one of the most diverse collections of handcrafted work in the Midwest. Just minutes away, the Gold Coast offers an incredible collection of haute couture and upmarket home furnishings, with the beautiful shops along Oak and Rush streets featuring the celebrity-magnet department store of Barneys New York, highprofile Ultimo, Jimmy Choo and famous jewellers Lester Lampert. You can also enjoy some spectacular views over Lake Michigan.

Galena’s historic downtown shops were voted ‘Best Main Street’ by Midwest Living Magazine

Springfield, the home of Abraham Lincoln (above), is on the legendary Route 66, which has many colourful stops (below) on its way through Illinois

Then, head out into the many neighbourhoods that make up the Chicago scene. Sample the artsy streets of Bucktown and Wicker Park, or make for Lincoln Square, which has a great mix of independent and nationally-known stores selling everything from toys to tools and art to armchairs. Outside of Chicago, the nearby suburb of Long Grove is an eclectic shopping destination that’s both classic and contemporary, while in the north-west corner of the state, Galena’s historic downtown shops were voted ‘Best Main Street’ by Midwest Living Magazine. But if you are looking for something ‘uniquely Illinois’, the store in the Illinois State Museum in the state capital, Springfield (on the fabled Route 66 and the home of Abraham Lincoln), offers fine crafts by members of the Illinois Artisans Program. Sixty miles north-west of Springfield, the Dickson Mounds Museum Store in Lewiston also highlights Illinois’ hand-crafted textiles, ceramics, jewellery, baskets and woodworks. And in southernmost Illinois, Whittington hosts the Southern Illinois Artisans Shop, featuring 25 categories of arts and crafts from more than 900 state artisans, while Alton is a major antiques centre. All in all, it’s an Aladdin’s Cave of shopping splendour – with plenty to go round!

When it comes to the eye-popping lure of the discount outlets – huge repositories of big-name brands sold at huge markdowns, often up to 65 per cent off regular prices – no one does it better than the Premium Outlets group. Here in Illinois, they offer the CHICAGO PREMIUM OUTLETS and HUNTLEY OUTLET CENTER as the pinnacle of retail pre-eminence. The Chicago centre (10am-9pm Mon-Sat, 6pm Sun) is in the chic western suburb of Aurora, with 120 high-quality stores offering everything from Ann Taylor to Georgio Armani and Salvatore Ferragamo. The Huntley stores (all 50 of them; 10am-9pm Mon-Sat, 7pm Sun) are further west near Rockford in the town of Huntley, with more quality brands such as Reebok, Guess and Tommy Hilfiger.

PREMIUM SHOPPING

For Minnesota’s share of discount outlet shopping, look for ALBERTVILLE PREMIUM OUTLETS, just 30 minutes west of downtown Minneapolis. With 100 stores (10am-9pm Mon-Sat, 7pm Sun), the Albertville line-up includes adidas, Banana Republic, Calvin Klein and Converse, split between the main Plaza and a Promenade area, plus plenty to keep the children happy with a Toys R Us Express and Kids Supercenter.

When it comes to a visit to The North Star State, one of the key attractions is arguably the USA’s greatest shopping centre, so the cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul should be at the very top of your agenda. Sitting just south of these two sparkling metropolises in suburban Bloomington is Mall of America®, the country’s biggest indoor shopping centre – and a lot more besides. Not only does the Mall encompass 520 stores, but it also boasts its own theme park – Nickelodeon Universe® – a cinema multiplex, a 1.2-million gallon aquarium, mini-golf, flight simulators, LEGO® kids’ adventure playground – and 50 places to eat. Its amazing interior architecture covers 390,000 square metres, with almost seven kilometres of store frontage, anchored by department stores Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Sears and Nordstrom at each corner. The full A-Z runs from Abercrombie & Fitch and Aeropostale to Zales Jewelers and Zumiez apparel, and includes big-name fashion from Banana Republic, Burberry, Gap, Guess, Lacoste, Nike, Tommy Bahama and many others. Top electronics stores include Apple, Microsoft and Best Buy. More than 60 new stores have opened at Mall of America in the past year and it now receives 42 million annual visitors annually. You will need at least a full day to explore everything – and probably an empty suitcase for all your purchases! The mall is also highly family-friendly with all its attendant attractions, notably the Nickelodeon theme park, which features more than 30 rides spread over seven acres. As a bonus, there are more than 400 annual events at the Mall of America to enjoy – all free to guests – including Hollywood celebrity appearances, performances and autograph signings. Of course, the Twin Cities offer more than just one Mall (big as it is). You can explore Lake Street (check out

Then head out to the charming Mississippi River towns of south-east Minnesota and visit the likes of the WabashaKellogg area (home of LARK Toys, the largest independent speciality toy store in North America) or Red Wing (where Red Wing Shoes have been produced since 1905). PS: Minnesota has no sales tax on clothing and shoes, hence value-for-money goes even further here!

Visitors inspect a giant guitar at Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Cleveland should certainly be where you start your shopping journey into The Buckeye State. Its diverse neighbourhoods offer a wide variety of experiences – and a series of unique possibilities. Downtown has its marquee attraction, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where you can buy everything from a guitar-pick mouse pad to a 3D peace-sign guitar ornament, while other neighbourhoods offer opportunities for taking in the arts, dining and, of course, shopping. Little Italy, for example, has a good variety of art in its many galleries, while the Historic Warehouse District is a fine mix of dining and shops, including Constantino’s Market, a Mecca for foodies. The city’s West Side Market is also a haven for foodies, with more than 100 vendors offering everything from Vietnamese hot sauces to Spanish and Tunisian olive oils, as well as freshly-baked Polish pastries or crusty Tuscan bread. For quirky and eclectic, head for Coventry, where the Cleveland Heights district features nostalgic lunch boxes and action figures at Big Fun Toys, and rhinestone collars at Coventry Cats! PREMIUM SHOPPING

In Ohio, the discount outlet experience is best evidenced by AURORA FARMS PREMIUM OUTLETS, near Cleveland, and brand-new CINCINNATI PREMIUM OUTLETS, directly off motorway I-75 north of Cincinnati. With 75 stores (10am-9pm MonSat, 6pm Sun), the pretty Aurora Farms boasts Bose, DKNY Jeans, Brooks Brothers and Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th among its attractions, while the Cincinnati outlet centre (100 stores, 10am-9pm Mon-Sat, 6pm Sun) features the likes of Coach, Converse and J Crew.

renaissance of this up-and-coming neighbourhood. In Columbus, Ohio’s biggest city and state capital, the Short North Arts District has dozens of art galleries, with artwork ranging from Asian masterpieces to Turkish treasures. Reflecting the fact that the city was settled more than 150 years ago by major German immigration, its German Village historic area retains its small, brick-built homes and a variety of one-of-a-kind stores and eating places, such as Schmidt’s Restaurant and Sausage Haus. The ‘Queen City’ of Cincinnati, on the banks of the Ohio River, boasts some bright, modern retail attractions, such as Deerfield Town Center – check out the fashion accessories at Charming Charlie – and Kenwood Towne Center, which has an excellent mix of well-known stores, as well as gift shops such as Sterling Cut Glass and Things Remembered. Ohio’s Amish community is the largest in the world, so shopping in Amish Country is a treat. Products are normally sold directly by their makers, so you can discover how your new quilt’s pattern has been passed down through the generations. Other popular Amish gifts include hand-crafted cheese, leather goods and metalwork. If pottery is your ‘thing’, you can find a huge range of historic and new pottery in Zanesville. One of the bestknown art pottery towns in the world, it has been producing rustic stoneware, art deco vases and functional tableware for 150 years.

Travel by Amtrak and you’ll do more ®

than just get from Point A to Point B – you’ll discover a whole new way of experiencing America! Enjoy the relaxed pace and stress-free ambience of contemporary train travel. Stretch out in a spacious seat or lounge in your private Sleeping car room. Make new friends over a game of cards or dinner in the Dining car. Or simply marvel at the spectacular scenery right outside your window. Because on Amtrak, the journey is just as inviting as the destination.

Chicago is America’s rail transportation hub and an excellent base from which to explore the Great Lakes region. As one of two direct rail routes between the American heartland and the great metropolises of the Northeast, the scenic Amtrak Lake Shore Limited™ offers stunning views of Lake Michigan and Lake Erie as well as the Erie Canal and New York’s Hudson River. The train leaves Chicago’s striking skyline behind, traveling east across Northern Indiana – where the University of Notre Dame’s gilded dome is visible over the treetops near South Bend – then along Lake Michigan, the Mohawk River and the southern shore of Lake Erie. After passing through Toledo and Sandusky, Ohio – home to Cedar Point, one of the world’s premier amusement parks – the Lake Shore Limited® continues to Cleveland, known to music lovers as the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and to sports fans as the home of the Browns, Indians and Cavaliers. As the train heads into New York State, enjoy a scenic ride through the Finger Lakes region before continuing to Albany – with connecting service to Boston – and New York City. Amtrak Hiawatha® Service offers convenient, regularly scheduled service from Chicago to nearby Milwaukee, Wisconsin, home of the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team and the architecturally striking Milwaukee Art Museum. A quick 90-minute trip will have you in the city known worldwide for its

beer, with seven round trips offered each day (six on Sundays). Complete your journey by taking the Hiawatha Service directly to the new Amtrak station at Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport, where you’ll receive free shuttle service to the airport terminal. Chicago’s central location also makes it the perfect point from which to embark on an exploration of the American Northwest. On board the Amtrak Empire Builder®, you’ll follow in the footsteps of the early pioneers, tracing parts of the original trail forged by legendary explorers Lewis and Clark. The train travels from Chicago to Milwaukee before heading west across Wisconsin and alongside the Mississippi River to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul, where picturesque paddlewheel boats transport visitors from scenic Harriet Island to the limestone bluffs of Fort Snelling. The Empire Builder stops at Midway Station in St. Paul, the state capital and birthplace of author F. Scott Fitzgerald (The Great Gatsby). Minneapolis is known for its extensive Skyway System of enclosed walkways linking most of downtown. From the Twin Cities, the Empire Builder continues across Minnesota and into North Dakota and Montana, stopping at Glacier National Park before splitting into two routes that conclude on the Pacific Coast at either Seattle, Washington or Portland, Oregon.

Admire works by Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky and other contemporary masters in the newly opened Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago. Located in Chicago’s Grant Park, The Art Institute is America’s second-largest museum, with one million square feet of exhibition space showcasing worldclass paintings, sculpture, photography and more.

Willis Tower: Gain a new perspective on Chicago and America’s

heartland on the Skydeck of the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower). Dare to stand out on The Ledge – four new, retractable glass ledges that suspend visitors out over Chicago more than 1,350 feet in the air. Mall of America: More than 35 million visitors make the pilgrimage each year to Bloomington, Minnesota in the Twin Cities metropolitan area and the giant Mall of America, home to 520 stores and more than 50 restaurants and attractions, including Camp Snoopy named for the beloved Peanuts comic strip character created by Twin Cities native Charles Schulz. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum: Celebrate Rock and Roll with a visit to Cleveland, Ohio’s interactive museum of rock and pop culture.

The Café Court (above) in The King of Prussia Mall; (below) Pennsylvania is home to many Amish communities

Pennsylvania runs the full gamut, from large retail malls and expansive outlet centres to chic boutiques and fascinating artisan shops and galleries. Plus, shopping for clothing and shoes is absolutely tax-free in The Keystone State. Philadelphia offers exceptional cultural, dining, recreational and historic experiences, but for shoppers, the city is an absolute haven. Start by visiting www. philadelphiausa.travel/savingspassport to obtain your Savings Passport, then make for Macy’s for an additional 10 per cent discount. For upscale boutiques, head for Rittenhouse Square, where modern designer names such as Armani and Zahra Saeed rub shoulders with the city’s colonial heritage, and the restaurant choice is equally impressive. Historic Antique Row on Pine Street is a unique collection of galleries – from long-term antique trader M Finkel & Daughter to the clever, speciality gifts of The Crystal Cage – while Old City is home to some of the trendiest stores, offering designer clothing to speciality cheeses. Reading Terminal Market, a local institution since 1893, features fresh field produce, Amish specialities, oneof-a-kind pottery and a vast range of eclectic restaurants. Travel beyond the city’s boundaries to the King of Prussia Mall and you’ll discover the largest retail mall (in size, not number of stores) in the US, with eight department stores and another 400 shops, the most-recent of which are fashion shop Coco & Lolly, sporty Golf by Design and luxury goods store Gucci. Pittsburgh is equally appealing, with a blend of culture, parks and modern retail therapy. Check out One Oxford Centre for exclusive shops such as NJ Richetti’s Fine Men’s Clothing

As with most things in Michigan, you start in Detroit; or, more correctly, the suburb of Troy, just to the north. There you’ll find the superb Somerset Collection, a modern, eyecatching mall with a wonderful collection of luxury shops and department stores. The architecture alone is worth seeing. Another good mall can be found just to the west in Novi, where Twelve Oaks Mall boasts an excellent line-up of well-known names, while nearby, Twelve Mile Crossing at Fountain Walk offers more shopping, dining, a multiplex cinema and indoor mini-golf! In the north of Michigan, just off the coast between the state’s Upper and Lower Peninsula, lies Mackinac Island. A wonderful Victorian-styled getaway, the island is famous for its fudge, horse-drawn carriages and excellent shopping. Then, turning south along the coast of Lake Michigan, the old frontier settlement of Traverse City is a haven for artists and, hence, a treasure trove of arts and crafts. You won’t find many big-name brands there, but you will discover a veritable gold mine of small-scale artisans and speciality shops, notably the indoor marketplace of The Village at Grand Traverse Commons, housed in a collection of historic buildings. Nearby, the small town of Glen Arbor is a must-see for the truly eclectic Cherry Republic, a collection of shops, crafts and tastes, with freshly-baked goods and even ice cream dedicated to Michigan’s big annual cherry crop. Driving south down the Lake Michigan coastline, don’t miss the opportunity to call in at some of the distinctive beach towns en route, until you reach Harbor Country in the New Buffalo area, which features an array of galleries and quaint antique shops.

Designer names, local arts and crafts, and unique gifts and experiences can all be found in The Badger State, where big shopping – and bargains – can be tracked down in small towns as well major cities. Wisconsin’s largest city, Milwaukee, known for its cosmopolitan flair and rich brewing history, also has a lot for shoppers, especially at Mayfair Mall, an indoor emporium with 180 shops offering everything from high fashion to fashion jewellery. For a change of pace, the Historic Third Ward teems with trendy shops and galleries. Anchored by Milwaukee Public Market, the fashion scene is well represented, along with local artisans, gifts and even pet boutiques. Madison is another great city shopping stop, with chic Hilldale Shopping Center and its 60 upmarket shops. State Street is a pedestrian mall lined with eclectic speciality stores, while Monroe Street features more boutiques, galleries and unique treasures. Get out into the wide, open spaces and you’ll discover a wonderful range of small-scale delights, such as Door County, a charming corner of the state that is often referred to as the ‘Cape Cod of the Midwest’. It offers the opportunity as you tour the peninsula to hunt for treasures in galleries, museums and lighthouses and there is a huge variety of one-ofa-kind shops, such as the Rusty Rabbit Shop, or you could pick up some American folk art at Scrimshanders, both in North Ephraim. The peninsula also has many speciality food shops

and farm stands and, in Fish Creek, the Top of The Hill Shops presents 23 gift shops in a park-like setting. Mineral Point, named as one of a ‘Dozen Distinctive Destinations’ by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is a haven for art lovers, with potteries, galleries, antiques and its own brewery. Princeton’s Water Street district is flush with home-decorating and gift options, and its Famous Outdoor Flea Market runs from spring until autumn. There are also many Amish communities a short drive away, where you can pick up cabinetry, baked goods or beautiful quilts. Bayfield, nestled on the shore of Lake Superior by the beautiful Apostle Islands, is a big draw for nature lovers and nature-loving artists, notably with the driftwood carvings, hand-made soaps and paintings at the Bayfield Arts Guild and Eckels Pottery. Many of the town’s shop owners have created the handcrafted items and often have interesting stories to share about your selection. Finally, Racine’s downtown revitalisation has turned the area into one of the state’s finest art and boutique shopping destinations. In Wisconsin, you can mix your retail therapy with a fine taste of small-town America – because, ultimately, that’s what makes our Lakes great.

As befits its central location within The Hoosier State, Indianapolis is the heart of Indiana’s best shopping opportunities – with both famous department stores and smaller, moreboutique offerings – while elsewhere, arts and crafts abound. Start in Indianapolis by enjoying the big-mall experience at Circle Center, with its 100 or so stores – and the Indianapolis Artsgarden, which has more than 350 free performances and exhibits each year. Alternatively, head for the Fashion Mall at Keystone, where a unique mix of upmarket stores and luxury, speciality retailers make up its 95 shops. Nearby, Zionsville – pure Americana, with its bricked, paved, historic main street – hosts several fine art galleries, while the Carmel Arts & Design District, in Old Town Carmel, is home to speciality shops such as Joy of Raphael, a holistic wellness centre and natural pharmacy, and Kilpatrick Traditions, which offers furniture made by Amish craftsmen. The pleasant neighbourhood of Broad Ripple Village has several one-of-a-kind shops, including the Indy CD & Vinyl shop, Artifacts art gifts, Big Hat Books and the Rock & A Hard Place General Store. You should also visit the funky Fountain Square District, where vintage bowling alleys and antique shops stand alongside concert venues and art. One of the newest centres is Metropolis, a ‘modernurban’ development of outdoor shopping, restaurants and services, which offers big-name stores, including

JC Penney and Barnes & Noble, as well as speciality shops such as Hot Topic – with unique gifts and unusual accessories – and Lids, with traditional and unique hats for every occasion In northern Indiana, the tranquil worlds of Elkhart, Shipshewana (be sure to visit the Menno-Hof Museum), Middlebury and Nappanee are where you’ll find the Amish (people who travel by horse and cart, live without electricity, and sell quilts, woodworks and crafts in the many roadside shops). Das Dutchman Essenhaus (in Middlebury), with its distinctive gift shops and stores filled with unique treasures, and Amish Acres (in Nappanee), a restored 80-acre Old Order farmstead, are well worth visiting. Antique lovers should head to Indiana’s famous Antique Alley, a 33-mile stretch of the Old National Road, which has more than 900 antique dealers. The US’s largest antique mall is based in Centerville, and there are many intriguing antique and speciality shops there, too. Historic Huntingburg boasts a charming Victorian downtown area with a myriad of gift and craft shops, while Nashville, in Brown County – where one-of-a-kind stores such as the Coca-Cola Shop, which features everything from nostalgic Coca-Cola items to clothing, kitchen accessories, collectibles, signs and more – is known as the Artist Colony of the Midwest and features many galleries and unique shops tucked among the rolling hills. Once again, you’ll be spoiled for choice – and richly rewarded for getting off the beaten track to explore.
