GREAT LAKES OF NORTH AMERICA

A Great Lakes Winter Warmer! Holiday destinations don’t get much more diverse and rewarding than the Great Lakes of North America, but come here in autumn or winter and you are on course for some of the best experiences the region can offer.

FROM

the blazing Fall Foliage to the splendour of the winter scenery – and we’re talking genuine winter wonderland territory here – this is the stuff of magnificent memories and fabulous photography. In fact, we’d go as far as to say your Great Lakes winter experience will take you to unimagined heights of real, raw, physical grandeur; Mother Nature at her finest – with the addition of some of the best indoor attractions man can devise along the way! Forget any notion of dour autumn and wretched winter UK style. This is a full-on adventure into pioneer territory that retains its free-spirited heritage but adds lashings of modern style, comfort

and efficiency. Yes, you might get three feet of snow overnight, but the roads will be cleared, transport still runs, things still work. Drink in the ‘big picture’ scenario and you can take your pick from Snowmobiling, Skiing (both downhill and crosscountry), Snow-shoeing, Dog-Sledding, Ice-Fishing, Snow-tubing, Tobogganing and Skating (in fact, snow-mobiling is almost the winter religion in these parts and should definitely be experienced at some stage). Then go state by state through the great panoply of the Great Lakes and you have even more to consider, a seven-strong lure of the most enticing kind. From plentiful PENNSYLVANIA,

where the cities still exude that Colonial sense of possibility and the countryside exhibits the full range of Fall Foliage; to wide open OHIO, and its vast tableaux of winter sports; marvellous MICHIGAN, with masses of varied, picturepostcard-pretty winter resorts; intriguing INDIANA, where Christmas festivals jostle for prominence with frolicking reindeer and cosy Winter scene, cabins; absorbing Wisconsin ILLINOIS, a state that does both autumn and winter in high style; rousing WISCONSIN, with its rich mix of indoor water parks and entertainment and the full variety of outdoor fun; and on to the majesty of MINNESOTA, where the change of seasons is just an excuse for some of the most wonderful winter activities yet invented! For, ultimately, a Great Lakes adventure in either Autumn or Winter is about feeling the restless spirit and enthusiasm that created these seven great states – and which is the key to enjoying their many attractions to the full today. Ready, Steady, Snow!

Getting the most out of your Great Lakes visit in autumn or winter means exploring the best that each state has to offer at different times of the year, starting with...

ILLINOIS

www.gochicago.com The Prairie State is a renowned year-round destination but its ‘winter’ face is one of delightful contrasts and attractions both small-scale and large. Start in September, which is ILLINOIS WINE MONTH (www. illinoiswine.com) and unwind along one of six major Wine Trails, notably the Illinois River Trail two hours south of Chicago, which features seven major wineries. Then expand your horizons on one of the seven NATIONAL SCENIC BYWAYS (www.byways.org/ explore/states/IL/) that include part of Route 66 and the Meeting of the Great Rivers Route, the latter of which is truly magnificent for fall foliage. As autumn merges into the true colours of winter, December marks

Chicago Christmas

the start of eagle-watching season in Illinois (until March) when thousands of majestic bald eagles migrate here from harsher northern climes. The city of ALTON (www.visitalton.com) is at the centre of this unique wildlife opportunity and their online Eagle Watcher’s Guide is an essential aid to this activity. Just remember to wrap up warm! However, as with almost everything Illinois, CHICAGO should be at the centre of your plans for your visit here. First off, shopping in the Windy City (it really earns that nickname in the winter months – protect extremities at

all times!) is world class, and you could easily fill your Christmas list 10 times over with high fashion items, designer label bargains and much more. The Magnificent Mile is Chicago’s upscale shopping district, while The Loop/ State Street affords more distinctive retail style at the likes of Nordstrom Rack, Macy’s, H&M and Filene’s Basement, often at rock-bottom prices. Head out to the suburb of AURORA and Chicago Premium Outlets has 120 outlet stores to further enhance the region’s reputation as a shopaholics’ paradise, while SCHAUMBURG is another hidden gem, with the Woodfield Mall and chic shops and restaurants of Woodfield Village Green, plus the year-round entertainment of Medieval Times dinner show. Back in Chicago, make sure to sample the city’s first-class array of museums and art galleries, which provide guaranteed visitor appeal year-round. Make note especially of the magnificent ART INSTITUTE, MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & INDUSTRY, SHEDD AQUARIUM, ADLER PLANETARIUM and the stunning 1920s-built FIELD MUSEUM. The WILLIS TOWER (formerly the Sears Tower) and the JOHN

WINTER WARMERS Good winter clothing is absolutely vital for any visit to the Great Lakes region in winter. A warm coat, hat, gloves, boots and thermal socks should all be in your suitcase – or the first things you buy when you encounter the many great shopping opportunities here!

GREAT LAKES OF NORTH AMERICA CHICAGO SHOULD BE AT THE CENTRE OF ANY PLAN FOR AN ILLINOIS VISIT HANCOCK CENTER are two of the world’s tallest buildings and offer superb, contrasting views from the sky-scraping observation levels. For the true outdoor, winter experience (December-mid March), head to sparkling GALENA in the north-west corner of the state. Here the summer golf scene gives way to a vast panorama of snowy splendour at the Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa, with cross-country skiing, ice-skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides and sledding all on offer. Chestnut Mountain Resort adds downhill skiing on 19 runs, a vast terrain park for snowboarding and a great kids’ programme. Go via the friendly, tree-lined streets of ROCKFORD and you can also try out the superb indoor Coco Key Water Park – great fun at any time of year but especially enjoyable in winter. Snowmobiling is also popular in the northern region, with dozens of trails open to the public and rentals available at the likes of DIXON, SHABBONA and RICHMOND.

WINTER WARMERS You’ll hear a lot about ‘Lake Effect’ snow in the Great Lakes region. This occurs where the cold winter winds sweep over the warmer waters of the lakes and generate huge but localised snowstorms on the windward shores, often several inches an hour. If you run into lake effect snow, be ready to get bogged down for a while – but it makes for superb ‘winter wonderland’ photos!

WINTER WARMERS Dressing in layers is essential to enjoying a day on the slopes or trails. Skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing are surprisingly energetic endeavours, and a few wellchosen layers are all you need to stay comfortable. Start with a breathable under-layer that will wick perspiration away, followed by an insulating layer such as a body warmer or sweatshirt. If you really feel the cold, add a fleece layer; if not, simply cover up with a high quality ski jacket and ski pants. Now you’re ready for any weather!

INDIANA

www.visit indiana.com Indiana won’t tax your thermals quite as much as her northern cousins do, but the state’s temperate nature makes it ideal for an autumn or winter break, with an emphasis on scenic outdoor recreation. Looking for quintessential American countryside in all its autumn glory? You’ll find it in BROWN COUNTY STATE PARK, south of Indianapolis, where world-class mountain biking trails, horse riding and 20 miles of scenic roadway traverse some of the Mid-West’s most varied terrain. PAGE 6

Great Lakes 2010.indd 6

October brings the award-winning HILLY HUNDRED cycling challenge (www.hillyhundred.org), a 3-day event across Southern Indiana’s back roads, their lush foliage ablaze in fiery reds, yellows and oranges. Live entertainment, refreshments, a costume contest and a vendor’s tent add to the festivities. Then visit trendy BLOOMINGTON, where a vast array of international cuisine, globally inspired shops and informative cultural centers put a surprisingly cosmopolitan face on this hilly community.

Head to the treetops for Dagaz Acres Zipline Adventure, where thrill seekers enjoy an unparalleled view of SWITZERLAND COUNTY’S spectacular countryside (Sep-Dec). A flourishing art colony resides in nearby RISING SUN, where streets are lined with shops and galleries featuring local handiworks. More sedate recreation awaits in FRENCH LICK, two hours south of Indianapolis. INDIANA IS WHERE THE STYLE OF TODAY AND THE LURE OF YESTERYEAR ARE COSY COMPANIONS a casino, horse-riding and world-class golf will slow your pace as the last days of summer wind down. The historic French Lick Springs and West Baden Springs hotels both offer luxurious retreats when evenings turn cold. Sample the state’s liquid bounty along the Indiana Wine Trail in the south-east, starting in BATESVILLE and COMMISKEY, then winding along the Ohio River through MADISON and VEVAY (www. indianawinetrailcom). If the lure of yesteryear is more appealing, PARKE COUNTY is the covered bridge capital of the world, boasting 31 historic bridges. ROCKVILLE hosts an annual 10-day festival, starting the second Friday in October, celebrating the area’s heritage with crafts, live entertainment, regional foods and guided tours. To the north, Amish Country offers more small-town charm and genuine historic overtones as you tour the likes of BRISTOL, ELKHART, GOSHEN and SHIPSHEWANA (www. amishcountry.com).

Once the snow flies, Indiana’s pace quickens in DEARBORN COUNTY, with snowmobiling, downhill and crosscountry skiing, and snowboarding at Perfect North Slopes (www.perfectnorth. com). STEUBEN COUNTY’S Pokagon State Park features Indiana’s only refrigerated toboggan run, an exhilarating 90ft series of dips and rises that take just 20-30 seconds to traverse from top to bottom! Potawatomi Inn, nestled within the park’s boundaries on the shore of Lake James, features a warm, welcoming lodge-style accommodation with an elegant, woodsy ambiance – a restful haven after a day on the track. Stay in the French Lick area for PAOLI PEAKS ski resort’s 17 trails (Beginner, Family, and Difficult), 3 snowboarding terrain parks, and Arctic Blast snow-tubing. Children will

appreciate the resort’s Kid’s Fun Park and Kid’s Snow Camp, offering downhill skiing and snowboarding (www. paolipeaks.com).

MICHIGAN

www.michigan.org You can really get your teeth into the Wolverine State at any time of the year, but autumn and winter bring out a stark beauty in Michigan that simply has to be witnessed to be believed. Just to begin with, the northern region, most notably the Upper Peninsula (the state is split into two parts, the ‘mainland’ lower peninsula and the upper part, surrounded by Lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan), offers some of the most best fall foliage in America. WINTER WARMERS November usually marks the first significant snowfalls and much of Michigan can be covered by December. In most years they will ‘enjoy’ 200-plus inches of snow, and this naturally gives rise to some of the best winter sport and outdoor activity in the Great Lakes region (and beyond!). HIAWATHA NATIONAL FOREST and you can feast on the spectacular displays of yellow, gold and burnished red that stretch for miles. Make sure you also take the spectacular ‘TUNNEL OF TREES’ through picturesque Boyne Country (www. boynecountry.com) from Harbor Springs to Cross Village, where the 19-mile rural highway is designated a Scenic Heritage Route and offers a sumptuously eyecatching panorama. The broad sweep of winter brings another sea-change to the Michigan scene, when the state comes into its own as a real skiing haven. Head to the north-west of the lower peninsula and you are into serious ski and snowboard country, with many of the Mid-West’s top resorts sprinkled through a handful of postcard-pretty towns

like GAYLORD, HARBOR SPRINGS, BELLAIRE, GLEN ARBOR and BOYNE FALLS. Take your pick from the likes of Treetops Resort (fabulous for families and beginners, plus it boasts a great spa; www.treetops.com), the extensive Shanty Creek Resorts (a stunning, 4,500-acre outdoor playground; www. shantycreek.com), Boyne Highlands Ski Resort (with its beautiful Main Lodge) and the multi-faceted, Alpine-styled Boyne Mountain Resort (which boasts its own indoor water park, Avalanche Bay, and the blissful Solace Spa), where the Mountain Grand Lodge offers a classic ski experience (www.boyne.com). SKIING – both downhill and crosscountry- and SNOWBOARDING are usually just the start of your Michigan winter experience, though. Many of the aforementioned resorts and regions can offer a marvellous mix of all that makes the Great Lakes so compelling. You should certainly try your hand at SNOWSHOEING – a great workout for the legs and lungs! – DOGSLEDDING and ICESKATING, while you will find many opportunities for horsedrawn WAGON and SLEIGH RIDES. SNOW-TUBING – bobbing down pre-prepared lanes on oversized, inflated tubes – is also a big hit with all the family. The really brave can try SURFING on Lake Superior in the winter, when the waves are at their best – check out www. greatlakesurfing.com. Another uber-cool

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE FAMED SNOWFALLS AND CRISP, BRIGHT WINTER DAYS IN SUPERIOR NATIONAL FOREST opportunity can be found throughout northern Michigan, where miles of well-prepared trails lead visitors along secluded byways and through snowladen forests. Or you can just chill out amid scenery that fills the soul with a true sense of winter wonder, snuggling down in peaceful backwaters like PETOSKEY, BAY VIEW and BAY HARBOR, where the locals immediately make you feel welcome and the trials and tribulations of modern-day life melt away. Check out The Perry Hotel, Bay View Inn – www. staffords.com – and the Inn at Bay Harbor – www.innatbayharbor.com – for a range of choice accommodations in this chic little trio). MINNESOTA

www.explore minnesota.com Superbly suited to summer and autumn travel, Minnesota comes into its own in winter, with a wealth of activities found only in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The state is renowned for its natural, rugged beauty and nowhere is the spectacular Fall Foliage more accessible than along Lake Superior’s shoreline, cruising the North Shore Scenic Drive from DULUTH to Canada’s border (www. superiorbyways.com/north-shorescenic-drive). The view from your car window is stunning; when experienced from the seat of a bicycle or along the Superior Hiking Trail (www.shta.org), it is nothing short of breathtaking. Even a small portion of the Trail will reward you with sights as varied as peaceful inland lakes to grand, mountainous terrain. In winter, the trails reverberate with the sound of snowmobiles cris-crossing the forests along the 135-mile North Shore System. Explore NEW ULM, a pretty German settlement situated along the Minnesota River, where the emphasis is on biking and fishing in autumn; ice fishing, skating and sledding in winter. Don’t miss Schell’s Brewery (www.schellsbrewery.com), especially when Oktoberfest rolls around, and the Harkin General Store, where costumed characters bring the 1870s to life. Vast tracts of prairie land wave gently in the breeze, recalling a time when the RED RIVER VALLEY saw herds of buffalo grazing its grasses. Nestled within the Valley, Buffalo State Park

in GLYNDON and Bluestem Prairie preserve near Moorhead capture the feel of bygone days, slowing the pace with fishing and birding as the days turn cool. Snowmobiling takes center stage in winter, especially in THIEF RIVER FALLS, 2 hours north of Moorehead. Enthusiasts can even tour the Arctic Cat manufacturing plant to see how these powerful machines are made. The ultimate bird-sighting experience is found in WABASHA, at the National Eagle Center. View wild eagles soaring high above the Mississippi River, then get an up-close view of this majestic bird in the Center’s rehab facility. The Center also highlights Native American culture and the eagle’s role in military history (www.nationaleaglecenter.org). More native culture can be found in PIPESTONE, south-west of Saint Paul.

WINTER WARMERS From time immemorial, WILD RICE has played an important role in the lives of Minnesota’s Sioux and Chippewa Indians, who harvest the grain using canoes, according to ancient traditions. Packets of this delicious, hearty grain (which is actually a watergrass seed rather than a true rice) are available in shops all over Minnesota. Its earthy flavour makes it a wonderful side dish on a chilly winter day. The long-grain version is especially good!

OHIO HAS VIBRANT, SHARP WINTERS OFFSET BY BRILLIANT AUTUMN COLOURS

Ohio’s wine country comes as a pleasant surprise to many visitors, and it comes into its own in late September and October. Head to GENEVA, north-east of Cleveland, and you are at the heart of a dozen wineries all offering tours and tastings in leisurely fashion. For the ideal base, try the classic architectural heritage of POLLY HARPER INN (www. pollyharperinn.com) or try out the many options with the WESTERN RESERVE TOURING CO (www.ohiovinetours.com), who include a magnificent five-course meal, with wine pairings, en route.

Like the state bird, the Cardinal

The Historic District boasts 20 buildings made from Sioux quartzite, while nearby Pipestone National Monument’s visitor center (www.nps.gov/pipe) tells the story of the quarry’s importance to American Indians, who made pipes from the veins of soft red stone layered between harder quartzite, hence the name ‘Pipestone’. When light frost on the grass turns to full-fledged snow, Minnesota revels in her outdoor opportunities. Bundled up against the cold, the thrill of dog-sledding and mushing (www.ely.org/winter/dogsled. php) competes with the meditative pleasures of ice fishing in Ely. Winter carnivals abound, with January’s SAINT PAUL Winter Carnival (www.wintercarnival.com) being the granddaddy of them all, celebrating its 123rd year in 2010. Finally, a visit to SUPERIOR NATIONAL FOREST is essential for

getting the best from the state’s famed snowfalls, taking full advantage of winter’s crisp, bright days, along the Boundary Waters trails. The Banadad Ski Trail, stretching almost 19 miles, includes a 4-mile snow-shoeing trail and the option to ski ‘Yurt to Yurt’, staying overnight in comfortable, secluded cabins or guest houses. Fully inclusive tours or ‘On Your Own’ packages can be found at www. boundar ycountry.com.

OHIO

www.discoverohio.com There is never a bad time to visit the Buckeye State but autumn and winter highlight two immensely contrasting and enjoyable seasons in this huge destination. From the gentle Fall panorama of Amish country to the all-out snow-laden fun of the north-east region and some fabulous festivals, this is another journey into a Great Lakes wonderland.

Arrive for the first gentle days of autumn (and the seasons do change with a seeming slow reluctance in the latter half of the year) and you can indulge in several major Ohioan traditions and eye-catching events, like Harvest Season in HOLMES COUNTY, to the south of the cities Cleveland and Akron. The official Gateway to the Heart of Amish Country is the cue for some major festivals each September and October, culminating in the 122nd LOUDONVILLE STREET FAIR (www.loudonvillefair.com). But you simply can’t go wrong here as towns like BERLIN, MILLERSBURG, WINESBURG and SUGARCREEK all host a variety of shows, parades and cook-offs, many of which date back to CONTINUES OVER...

The sevenmile circuit around Kelley’s Island can be completed in roughly four hours and highlights the fancifully-carved

glacial outcrops as well as the glittering arboreal display that extends for miles along the shoreline. When the weather does turn to distinctly more wintry climes, the major cities of CLEVELAND, COLUMBUS and CINCINNATI offers a myriad of indoor possibilities, from the visual and performance arts to great food and wine and on to the more sybaritic pleasures of great Spas. Make sure you take in the SHORT NORTH ARTS DISTRICT (www. shortnorth.org) in Columbus, Cincinnati’s innovative (and occasional controversial) CONTEMPORARY ARTS CENTER (www. contemporaryartscenter.org) and Tremont on Cleveland’s west side, where the city’s funky, artsy side is well evidenced (www.restoretremont.com). Of course, there is also the world-famous ROCK ‘N ROLL HALL OF FAME in Cleveland, the huge PLAYHOUSE SQUARE performing arts centre (one of America’s largest) and the taste-bud tingling WEST SIDE MARKET, where foodies can indulge in a wide range of

ethnic delicacies and award-winning restaurants. But do also try the Big Outdoors in winter – cross-country skiing is widely available in 33 state parks in both the north-east and across the southern region; snowmobiling is also widely popular; sledding can be tried in any one of 43 different locations; and ice fishing is a must-try activity. ALPINE VALLEY (www.alpinevalleyohio.com) is one of the premier winter resort areas, but you can also enjoy much of the above, plus snowboarding and snow-tubing, at the likes of MAD RIVER (www.skimadriver. com), BIG CREEK and SPICY RUN MOUNTAIN. of the weather’s propensity to deliver plenty of the ‘raw materials’ for skiing, snowboarding and even ice-boating. But this is great autumn territory, too, so there is plenty of choice when it comes to the right time to visit Pennsylvania (which really boils down to the fact there is never a ‘wrong’ time!). For the ‘leaf peepers,’ there is some magnificent countryside to enjoy at PRESQUE ISLE state park, one of the state’s great natural resources as it includes the superb Tom Ridge Environmental Centre and Tower. Here you can sample the full range of the burnished, bejeweled nature of the forest canopy in late September and October, while the Isle is also renowned as a great bird-watching haven, with more than 320 species noted along this 32,000-acre peninsula. Head south and you can also explore Wine Country, with a varied range of wineries and tempting tastings (www. pennsylvaniawine.com). There are more than 100 vineyards, featuring everything from cabernet sauvignon to champagne-method wines, and you will be hard-pushed to sample even a representative cross-section. There are seven wine ‘regions’ but the biggest concentration is in the UPPER and LOWER SUSQUEHANNA areas in eastcentral Pennsylvania. LEHIGH VALLEY is another major producer, notably for its award-winning ice wines at Blue Mountain and Galen Glen Vineyards. Autumn FISHING is another major draw along the many creeks and streams that drain into Lake Erie. The clearer waters and mild climate encourage greater fish activity, with bass, bluegill,

rainbow trout and perch among the best catches (www.pagameandfish,.com). As autumn gives way to the first snows of winter (usually by midNovember in the Pocono Mountains in the north-east and the Alleghenies just to the west), the locals take full advantage by breaking out the skis, snowboards, skates, snow-shoes and ice-fishing gear. The Poconos are winter fun central, with some 165 trails and slopes to enjoy, whether for downhill or cross-country skiing. You can also try dog-sledding, ice-skating and snow-tubing among a plethora of well-equipped resorts like SKYTOP LODGE (with its serene Skyview Spa), MOUNT AIRY CASINO RESORT and THE INN AT POCONO MANOR (www.poconoski.com). From December to March, devotees of ice-fishing make their way (climate permitting) to HORSESHOE POND and MISERY BAY back in Presque Isle state park, where the lakes freeze and anglers congregate around their ice huts to drop a lure through man-made holes. Pan-fish (especially perch) are the main catch, but the real fascination is in watching these hardy souls spend hours of patient recreation time plumbing the ice-cold depths. Not a common sight in Britain, no matter how cold we think it gets! But perhaps the signature event of the region is ICE-BOATING, a truly eyecatching sport carried out by a handful of intrepid adventurers along the lakes of western Pennsylvania and frozen Lake Erie shoreline. With 800 miles of snowmobile trails, 600 lakes ideal for ice fishing, 200 miles of cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing trails, ChequamegonNicolet National Forest appeals to the heart of true winter sports enthusiasts. Granite Peak Ski Area at Rib Mountain State Park in WAUSAU, known as ‘Mid-America’s Ski Town’, boasts 75 ski runs, a terrain park and 20 miles of cross-country ski trails in nearby Nine Mile Forest, plus a vast array of accommodation choice, from luxurious resorts to intimate, historic B&Bs (www.

WINTER WARMERS Possibly Wisconsin’s best-known family destination in summer, the WISCONSIN DELLS make an ideal base in winter, too, not only for easy access to snowmobile trails and skiing at Cascade Mountain, but also for the 20 indoor water parks, perfect for a lazyriver float while the snow swirls outside (www.wisdells.com).

Iron ore put the bawdy town of HURLEY on the map, but with an average annual snowfall exceeding 200 inches, its fame now lies in its reputation as a skier’s dream. Arrive in autumn and the area’s 50 waterfalls are likely to be in full flow and you may just spot moose and elk, or hear the call of a timber wolf. Collectively a part of Lakeland Area, WOODRUFF, MINOCQUA and ARBOR VITAE (www.minocqua.org) are renowned for exceptional groomed trails, but their proximity to 3,200 bodies of inland waters, including expansive Minocqua, Tomahawk and Big Arbor

GREAT LAKES OF NORTH AMERICA WISCONSIN IS WINTER SPORT CENTRAL – WITH THE ADDITION OF GREAT WILDLIFE Vitae Lakes, makes ice fishing a ‘must try.’ Come in from the cold at LITTLE BOHEMIA LODGE (www.littlebohemialodge.com) in MANITOWISH WATERS, where gangster John Dillinger stayed in 1934 (and which was the site for the recent blockbuster film Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp). Today, Little Bohemia operates as a historic restaurant, faithfully preserved to maintain its brush with infamy – bullet holes still pepper the walls, Dillinger memorabilia is on display

and legend tells of a missing bag lost during the gang’s escape! Winter festivals bring out Wisconsin’s playful spirit with events like Klondike Days honouring the lumberjacking and fur trading history, and the World Championship Snowmobile Derby, both in EAGLE RIVER. MINOCQUA revs up with the Cruiserfest Snowmobile Parade; PINE RIVER has the Pine River Run Sled Dog Races; and CABLE and HAYWARD host the annual Subaru American Birkabeiner cross-country ski marathon. Experience dog-sledding through a variety of outfitters, including A Wilderness Haven Resort in HAYWARD, Snow Ryder Dog Sled Adventure in LA POINTE, Siberian Outpost in MALONE and Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing in BAYFIELD. Adventure is also found along the 47 miles of trails that make MINOCQUA’S Winter Park a cross-country skiing favourite. Beginners should try Mecca Trail in MERCER while more advanced skiers will appreciate CHEQUAMEGON-NICOLET

NATIONAL FOREST’S Lakewood Trail, where you may also just spot moose and elk, or hear the call of a timber wolf. Can’t decide between cross-country skiing and dog mushing? Try both at the same time! Strap on some skis, tether yourself to a sled dog and experience SKIJORING, from the Norwegian word for ‘ski driving’. And, if nighttime Candlelight Skiing is on the menu, you should also give this unforgettable experience a try.

Chicago

Travel by Amtrak and you’ll do more ®

than just get from Point A to Point B – you’ll discover a whole new way of experiencing America! Enjoy the relaxed pace and stress-free ambience of contemporary train travel. Stretch out in a spacious seat or lounge in your private Sleeping car room. Make new friends over a game of cards or dinner in the Dining car. Or simply marvel at the spectacular scenery right outside your window. Because on Amtrak, the journey is just as inviting as the destination.

Chicago is America’s rail transportation hub and an excellent base from which to explore the Great Lakes region. As one of two direct rail routes between the American heartland and the great metropolises of the Northeast, the scenic Amtrak Lake Shore Limited™ offers stunning views of Lake Michigan and Lake Erie as well as the Erie Canal and New York’s Hudson River. The train leaves Chicago’s striking skyline behind, traveling east across Northern Indiana – where the University of Notre Dame’s gilded dome is visible over the treetops near South Bend – then along Lake Michigan, the Mohawk River and the southern shore of Lake Erie. After passing through Toledo and Sandusky, Ohio – home to Cedar Point, one of the world’s premier amusement parks – the Lake Shore Limited® continues to Cleveland, known to music lovers as the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and to sports fans as the home of the Browns, Indians and Cavaliers. As the train heads into New York State, enjoy a scenic ride through the Finger Lakes region before continuing to Albany – with connecting service to Boston – and New York City. Amtrak Hiawatha® Service offers convenient, regularly scheduled service from Chicago to nearby Milwaukee, Wisconsin, home of the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team and the architecturally striking Milwaukee Art Museum. A quick 90-minute trip will have you in the city known worldwide for its

beer, with seven round trips offered each day (six on Sundays). Complete your journey by taking the Hiawatha Service directly to the new Amtrak station at Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport, where you’ll receive free shuttle service to the airport terminal. Chicago’s central location also makes it the perfect point from which to embark on an exploration of the American Northwest. On board the Amtrak Empire Builder®, you’ll follow in the footsteps of the early pioneers, tracing parts of the original trail forged by legendary explorers Lewis and Clark. The train travels from Chicago to Milwaukee before heading west across Wisconsin and alongside the Mississippi River to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul, where picturesque paddlewheel boats transport visitors from scenic Harriet Island to the limestone bluffs of Fort Snelling. The Empire Builder stops at Midway Station in St. Paul, the state capital and birthplace of author F. Scott Fitzgerald (The Great Gatsby). Minneapolis is known for its extensive Skyway System of enclosed walkways linking most of downtown. From the Twin Cities, the Empire Builder continues across Minnesota and into North Dakota and Montana, stopping at Glacier National Park before splitting into two routes that conclude on the Pacific Coast at either Seattle, Washington or Portland, Oregon.

Admire works by Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky and other contemporary masters in the newly opened Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago. Located in Chicago’s Grant Park, The Art Institute is America’s second-largest museum, with one million square feet of exhibition space showcasing worldclass paintings, sculpture, photography and more.

Willis Tower: Gain a new perspective on Chicago and America’s

heartland on the Skydeck of the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower). Dare to stand out on The Ledge – four new, retractable glass ledges that suspend visitors out over Chicago more than 1,350 feet in the air. Mall of America: More than 35 million visitors make the pilgrimage each year to Bloomington, Minnesota in the Twin Cities metropolitan area and the giant Mall of America, home to 520 stores and more than 50 restaurants and attractions, including Camp Snoopy named for the beloved Peanuts comic strip character created by Twin Cities native Charles Schulz. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum: Celebrate Rock and Roll with a visit to Cleveland, Ohio’s interactive museum of rock and pop culture.

value for money is uppermost in most people’s thoughts these days, hence the hunt for a bargain gets our attention quicker than anything else. And each state also has its own specialities and curiosities that make browsing a richly rewarding experience. Just try this range of highlights and must-sees: you’ll be hard-pressed to get out of Chicagoland if you have a serious shopping agenda,

but several other notable centres would be the Southern Illinois Artisans Shop & Visitors Center in WHITTINGTON, the GALENA ANTIQUES MALL, which draws interest from all over the USA, the distinctive shopping and dining of downtown Geneva and the 1800s period style of Long Grove Historical Village. antique hunters flock to the country roads here in great numbers, seeking out the Amish stores of SHIPSHEWANA, MIDDLEBURY, ELKHART and BRISTOL. The Covered Bridge art of Rockville is another big attraction and the Lehman-Goertzen Pottery in GOSHEN is internationally renowned. while Metro Detroit offers some great malls and big-name stores, you can find unique opportunities further afield. The attractive Victorian downtown of

MINNESOTA If nothing else, the stunning MALL OF AMERICA is one of THE great reasons to visit the Minneapolis-St Paul area. Not so much a shopping mall as a vast entertainment centre, it features 520 stores, 50 restaurants and a range of attractions highlighted by its own theme park. Department stores Bloomingdales, Macy’s, Sears and Nordstrom key some 4.3 MILES of storefront, while the 7-acre NICKELODEON UNIVERSE is the big family draw with its 27 roller-coasters and other rides. Then there is Underwater Adventures Aquarium, LEGO Imagination Center, Dinosaur Walk Museum, A.C.E.S Flight Simulation and NASCAR Silicon Motor Speedway. Guaranteed fun for everyone. PS: There is no sales tax on clothing in Minnesota! Check out www.mallofamerica.com for more.
