www.gochicago.com The Prairie State is a renowned year-round destination but its ‘winter’ face is one of delightful contrasts and attractions both small-scale and large. Start in September, which is ILLINOIS WINE MONTH (www. illinoiswine.com) and unwind along one of six major Wine Trails, notably the Illinois River Trail two hours south of Chicago, which features seven major wineries. Then expand your horizons on one of the seven NATIONAL SCENIC BYWAYS (www.byways.org/ explore/states/IL/) that include part of Route 66 and the Meeting of the Great Rivers Route, the latter of which is truly magnificent for fall foliage. As autumn merges into the true colours of winter, December marks

the start of eagle-watching season in Illinois (until March) when thousands of majestic bald eagles migrate here from harsher northern climes. GREAT LAKES OF NORTH AMERICA CHICAGO SHOULD BE AT THE CENTRE OF ANY PLAN FOR AN ILLINOIS VISIT HANCOCK CENTER are two of the world’s tallest buildings and offer superb, contrasting views from the sky-scraping observation levels. For the true outdoor, winter experience (December-mid March), head to sparkling GALENA in the north-west corner of the state. Here the summer golf scene gives way to a vast panorama of snowy splendour at the Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa, with cross-country skiing, ice-skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides and sledding all on offer. WINTER WARMERS Dressing in layers is essential to enjoying a day on the slopes or trails. Skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing are surprisingly energetic endeavours, and a few wellchosen layers are all you need to stay comfortable. Start with a breathable under-layer that will wick perspiration away, followed by an insulating layer such as a body warmer or sweatshirt. The historic French Lick Springs and West Baden Springs hotels both offer luxurious retreats when evenings turn cold. WINTER WARMERS November usually marks the first significant snowfalls and much of Michigan can be covered by December. In most years they will ‘enjoy’ 200-plus inches of snow, and this naturally gives rise to some of the best winter sport and outdoor activity in the Great Lakes region (and beyond!). HIAWATHA NATIONAL FOREST and you can feast on the spectacular displays of yellow, gold and burnished red that stretch for miles. Make sure you also take the spectacular ‘TUNNEL OF TREES’ through picturesque Boyne Country (www. boynecountry.com) from Harbor Springs to Cross Village, where the 19-mile rural highway is designated a Scenic Heritage Route and offers a sumptuously eyecatching panorama. The broad sweep of winter brings another sea-change to the Michigan scene, when the state comes into its own as a real skiing haven. Head to the north-west of the lower peninsula and you are into serious ski and snowboard country, with many of the Mid-West’s top resorts sprinkled through a handful of postcard-pretty towns

www.explore minnesota.com Superbly suited to summer and autumn travel, Minnesota comes into its own in winter, with a wealth of activities found only in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The state is renowned for its natural, rugged beauty and nowhere is the spectacular Fall Foliage more accessible than along Lake Superior’s shoreline, cruising the North Shore Scenic Drive from DULUTH to Canada’s border (www. superiorbyways.com/north-shorescenic-drive). The view from your car window is stunning; when experienced from the seat of a bicycle or along the Superior Hiking Trail (www.shta.org), it is nothing short of breathtaking. Even a small portion of the Trail will reward you with sights as varied as peaceful inland lakes to grand, mountainous terrain. In winter, the trails reverberate with the sound of snowmobiles cris-crossing the forests along the 135-mile North Shore System. Explore NEW ULM, a pretty German settlement situated along the Minnesota River, where the emphasis is on biking and fishing in autumn; ice fishing, skating and sledding in winter. WINTER WARMERS From time immemorial, WILD RICE has played an important role in the lives of Minnesota’s Sioux and Chippewa Indians, who harvest the grain using canoes, according to ancient traditions. Packets of this delicious, hearty grain (which is actually a watergrass seed rather than a true rice) are available in shops all over Minnesota. Its earthy flavour makes it a wonderful side dish on a chilly winter day. The long-grain version is especially good!

OHIO HAS VIBRANT, SHARP WINTERS OFFSET BY BRILLIANT AUTUMN COLOURS
Ohio’s wine country comes as a pleasant surprise to many visitors, and it comes into its own in late September and October. Head to GENEVA, north-east of Cleveland, and you are at the heart of a dozen wineries all offering tours and tastings in leisurely fashion. When light frost on the grass turns to full-fledged snow, Minnesota revels in her outdoor opportunities. Arrive for the first gentle days of autumn (and the seasons do change with a seeming slow reluctance in the latter half of the year) and you can indulge in several major Ohioan traditions and eye-catching events, like Harvest Season in HOLMES COUNTY, to the south of the cities Cleveland and Akron. But this is great autumn territory, too, so there is plenty of choice when it comes to the right time to visit Pennsylvania (which really boils down to the fact there is never a ‘wrong’ time!). For the ‘leaf peepers,’ there is some magnificent countryside to enjoy at PRESQUE ISLE state park, one of the state’s great natural resources as it includes the superb Tom Ridge Environmental Centre and Tower. Here you can sample the full range of the burnished, bejeweled nature of the forest canopy in late September and October, while the Isle is also renowned as a great bird-watching haven, with more than 320 species noted along this 32,000-acre peninsula. Head south and you can also explore Wine Country, with a varied range of wineries and tempting tastings (www. pennsylvaniawine.com). There are more than 100 vineyards, featuring everything from cabernet sauvignon to champagne-method wines, and you will be hard-pushed to sample even a representative cross-section. There are seven wine ‘regions’ but the biggest concentration is in the UPPER and LOWER SUSQUEHANNA areas in eastcentral Pennsylvania. LEHIGH VALLEY is another major producer, notably for its award-winning ice wines at Blue Mountain and Galen Glen Vineyards. Autumn FISHING is another major draw along the many creeks and streams that drain into Lake Erie. The clearer waters and mild climate encourage greater fish activity, with bass, bluegill,

The Poconos are winter fun central, with some 165 trails and slopes to enjoy, whether for downhill or cross-country skiing. You can also try dog-sledding, ice-skating and snow-tubing among a plethora of well-equipped resorts like SKYTOP LODGE (with its serene Skyview Spa), MOUNT AIRY CASINO RESORT and THE INN AT POCONO MANOR (www.poconoski.com).
