In Towanda, enterprising townsfolk have preserved a segment of Route 66 as a 1.6-mile walking trail dedicated to ‘America’s Main Street’. Some towns are true oddities, like Atlanta – with its murals and 19ft tall Bunyon’s Statue of a man holding a giant hotdog! – and the strangely named Normal. ● McDonald’s first franchised restaurant opened in DES PLAINES in 1955. No longer a functioning restaurant, the building is now McDonald’s #1 Store Museum, with memorabilia recreating that 1950s feel.

● METROPOLIS, the official ‘Home of Superman’, is a real place on the Ohio River. See the giant Superman statue, the Superman museum, or have a flutter at Harrah’s Casino. ● Popeye the Sailor Man turns 80 this year. In CHESTER, a six-foot bronze statue commemorates the spinacheater, or rather his creator, Elzie Segar. The annual picnic (early September) is an excuse for concerts and fireworks.
at their Route 66 Dream Car Museum, with 30 motors to ooh and aah over. Illinois capital Springfield is synonymous with President Abraham Lincoln and, in 2009, the city celebrates the bicentennial of Honest Abe’s birth. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential
Library and Museum brings the 16th president to life, using the latest technology. But Springfield is also home to Bill Shea, the No 1 Route 66 fan. At Shea’s Gas Station Museum, he has collected everything from a 1952 Airstream caravan to fuel pumps and oil cans.
Drive on and the sense of yesteryear persists with one of the oldest diners on Route 66, the 1924 Ariston Café in Litchfield and the 170ft-tall water tower shaped like a ketchup bottle in Collinsville! More surprising here is an archaeological site dating back at least 1,000 years. The Cahokia Mounds are a World Heritage Site where you can learn about flint-knapping and discover why the 68 mounds were created by the most sophisticated prehistoric Indian civilisation north of Mexico. Then, swing north on the Great River Road (www. greatriverroad-illinois.org), through Granite City. To the west is the 5,353ft-long Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. Cars and trucks thundering along Route 66 used to cross the Mississippi River here; now it is one of the world’s longest bike and foot bridges.
Continue north along the Mississippi (and the Great River Road) with historic towns, such as Elsah, Quincy and Nauvoo, the latter with its beautifullypreserved homes, 1840 print shop and Illinois’ oldest vineyard. The bustling Quad Cities consist of Moline, Rock Island (of Rock Island Line fame) and (across the river in Iowa) Davenport and Bettendorf. For the ‘best Hot Fudge in the Solar System’, head for Lagomarcino’s, a century-old family business in Moline. For a tropical paradise of towering plants and flowers, head for Rock Island’s Quad City Botanical Center. In East Moline, climb aboard a massive modern-day combine harvester on a tour of the John Deere Pavilion, one of the world’s largest agricultural equipment manufacturers. ny visit to Indiana should start with the city of Indianapolis, the state’s principal and capital city, which is home to a wealth of attractions, both modern and historic. Just don’t count on seeing it all in one or two days! Set almost literally at the crossroads of America, its 19thcentury origins are well displayed and you can enjoy an epic journey through time at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art and the Indiana State Museum, both of which are set in beautiful downtown White River State Park. Railroad’ (the network of secret routes that allowed many slaves to escape the South during the Civil War) and then head up into Wine Country, where a string of charming towns boast some award-winning wineries that are well worth taking time to sample among the rolling hills of south-east Indiana. Make sure you see Madison, with its extensive National Register of Historic Places (all 133 blocks of it!), including the Lanier Mansion, just one of many fine preserved examples of 19thcentury architecture in the Federal and Greek Revival styles. ● The first ‘interstate’ highway in America was built in the early 1800s and is called the National Road (from Maryland to Illinois). It is now an All-American National Scenic Byway and travels right through Indiana. Highway 40 follows much of the original road. Look up www.route40.net. ● Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is home to the unusual phenomenon of the ‘singing sands,’ areas of the dunes that emit a strange, low-frequency sound under pressure. Just walk on them to hear them ‘sing’!

South Bend, Indiana, home of famous Notre Dame University and its revered American football team, where you can see the famed ‘Golden dome’ above the treetops. Travelling via Waterloo (Indiana) and Bryan (Ohio) brings you to Toledo, where, just south of Fort Miami, General ‘Mad’ Anthony Wayne defeated the Native Americans at Fallen Timbers in 1794, a conquest that cleared the way for the settlement of north-west Ohio and northern Indiana. Erie is Pennsylvania’s only major Great Lakes port and is known as the ‘Gem City’ because of its sparkling bay (although the name comes from a tribe of fierce Native Americans, the Eriez). After 11 hours, the Lake Shore Limited finally exits the Great Lakes states for Buffalo-Depew, a city just across the Niagara River from Canada and famous for manufacturing steel, chemicals and auto parts before heading east to either New York or Boston, via Albany-Rensselear.

EMPIRE BUILDER Travelling daily between Chicago and the Pacific north-west along major portions of the historic Lewis-Clark trail, Amtrak’s Empire Builder provides the perfect way to experience the rugged splendour of the American west. Its exciting passage passes through some
majestic wilderness territory, following in the footsteps of the early pioneers. The full journey to Seattle takes 46 hours, but the section to Minneapolis-Saint Paul is a more manageable 8¼ hours. From Chicago, there are magnificent views of the mighty Mississippi as you head north-
west into Wisconsin via modern, suburban Glenview, with the view punctuated by older farms and industrial complexes. Next stop is Milwaukee, the Brewing City made famous by its German immigrants, with the big baseball stadium on the right and the Miller Brewing
Company on the left, as well as the glass domes of the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory. Continue on through Columbus (with the landmark steeple of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church) and you reach Wisconsin Dells, with its glorious red sandstone canyon. Tomah is the gateway to Wisconsin’s Cranberry Country, with rugged limestone bluffs, which soon gives way to soft, tree-covered mountains as you reach the town of La Crosse, where the Black, La Crosse and Mississippi Rivers meet. This marks the start of a 140-mile stretch following the wide, quiet and scenic Mississippi valley, via the towns of Winona and Red Wing. Finally, with darkness fallen and the glowing city skyline of Minneapolis-Saint Paul looming into view, it is time to leave the Amtrak behind and let it continue on its much longer voyage to the Pacific.

Ohio has long been at the leading edge of new technology. A century ago, Dayton was buzzing with inventors, most famously the Wright brothers. Start in the Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, with the Wrights’ original bicycle shop, then move on to Carillon Historic Park. Also here, just outside
Dayton, is the National Museum of the United States Air Force, the world’s largest and oldest military aviation museum, at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. See 400 planes, including a Sopwith Camel, World War II B-17 bomber Memphis Belle and a Northrop B-2 Spirit, the eerie ‘stealth bomber’. As well as the original 1905 Wright Flyer III, the first plane capable of properly-controlled flight, the collection includes a Dayton-built 1908 Stoddard Dayton and a 1915 Cyclecar, built in nearby Xenia. But don’t miss the Canton Classic Car Museum, with its rare 1901 curved-dash Oldsmobile and 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz. Of course, what every car needs is tyres – welcome to Akron, and the Goodyear World of Rubber Museum. It was Charles Goodyear who accidentally invented the vulcanised rubber needed to make hard-wearing tyres and his story is told here, from a reproduction of his workshop to a moon buggy and even an artificial heart.
