Welcome to
InspiredLiving!
Welcome to the third issue of Inspired Living, your magazine. Thanks to everyone who gave us feedback on the last issue. As you’ll see in this issue we’re making so much progress in all areas of the Oldham PFI project. As a team we’re thrilled to see everyone’s hard work come to fruition. Our regeneration work is now starting to make a real impact in the community. You can see this in action with the opening of the Crossley Centre, which will provide residents with a community hub. There’s a real buzz and excitement around the place and we hope you use this important facility as it’s run by you, for you. Please support it! Not forgetting Primrose Bank which will see the doors of their new community centre opening in the coming weeks hopefully – we are still looking for volunteers and further information on how you can get stuck in
is included later in the magazine. Again, we have high hopes the Primrose Centre will create the same excitement and anticipation we have seen at Crossley.

AMIR TAKES TO THE TABLE Oldham’s very own talented table tennis star Amir Hussain has swept all before him on his way to becoming national junior champion. Inspired Living challenged him to a game.
The table tennis prodigy gave a demonstration of his smashing skills in front of spell bound onlookers at the opening of Crossley Community Centre where he trains twice a week. The 10-year-old is currently England under 11 champion and number one in the country in his age group. His prodigious talent has seen him travel abroad to represent England and he has been to training camps in the Far East to hone his skills. He has received plenty of support from his dad Khamal, who is a talented player in his own right, mum Hasna and sister Naimah who are all very proud of his achievements. Amir said: “It was my dad who introduced me to table tennis. He plays regularly and he is also a table tennis coach. He showed me how to play and I enjoyed it straight away.
Amir with his coach
“I train between five and six times a week and two of my sessions are at the Crossley Community Centre. My aim is to be one of the top 50 players in the world.” Zillur Rahman, who runs the table tennis club at the centre, said: “He is very much a home grown talent. He started playing at St Mark’s Church in Glodwick. He has won many tournaments including national ones. “He’s even been to Hong Kong twice to train with other talented youngsters. China is the best country in the world when it comes to table tennis and Amir is as good as their top players. “We run table tennis session twice a week at the centre and it is popular with the local children and it’s great that Amir comes along.”

NEWS from the wider borough HOUSING BENEFIT CLAIM FORMS GO ONLINE ON 6TH OCTOBER For residents who apply for housing benefit to help with their rent, from 6th October all forms must be completed online. The online form is very easy – it’s intuitive so will only ask questions relevant to you, providing a specific evidence list at the end. You’ll get information on how much you’ll be eligible for, providing all information completed is accurate. This may not be the case for homeowners, but either way, the entry of the claim online will speed up the whole process. Great Places is happy to help those who are making a claim – please contact your neighbourhood coordinator. Some claimants won’t need to submit original evidence, photocopies will be accepted as long as they are clearly marked with which claim they are for – name address, claim number etc. Anyone who needs assistance with using the internet can attend the digital inclusion roadshows and IT sessions that are covered on later pages of this magazine.
NEW PLAY AREA FOR THE TOWN CENTRE Oldham town centre has a new family attraction – a new children's play area. The fun-filled facility in Market Place has a small range of new play opportunities for younger children and we hope it will become a favourite place for youngsters to visit. Fixed timber equipment gives little ones the chance to climb, swing and slide to their hearts content – and all in a safe softimpact setting. The new play area includes a multi-purpose unit offering climbs, swings, and a slide with platforms, walkway and ladder access. A smaller unit has a low-level platform with a climbing slope and sliding ramp. There is a ‘spring rocker’ animal unit and the site is enclosed by a small fence. Come along with your family and discover how much Oldham town centre has to offer.
CROSSLEY PLAYING FIELDS WILL BE TOP OF THE LEAGUE Grassroots football in Chadderton has received a boost of more than £550,000. The cash has been provided thanks to funding from the council, the Premier League and the FA Facilities Fund, delivered by the Football Foundation. The money will go towards improving the drainage on five pitches at Crossley and refurbishing the site’s changing rooms. All teams that used the playing fields last season will be relocated to other pitches across the borough. It is hoped the initial work will be completed by late September so the pitches are ready for the start of the 2015/16 season. Fundraising by local football clubs, under the banner of Chadderton Together and a donation of £5,000 from Wates Giving, raised a further £7,500. Contractors Laing, which are working on the nearby Crossley estate have also given £5,000 towards the project.

OLD TOWN HALL IS CINEMA SMASH HIT Prepare to roll out the red carpet – the council and ODEON have agreed an exciting deal to open a seven-screen cinema in the town centre
CGI image of how the future cinema will look
The Grade II-listed Old Town Hall is to become a new 805-seat family cinema complex boasting seven screens, plus six restaurants and a branded café franchise. The plans capitalise on the Old Town Hall’s town centre location – conserving as much of the existing building as possible whilst also adding a modern glazed ‘light box’ extension. There will also be a new public square adjacent to the venue in Clegg Street which will feature restaurants and play host to arts and cultural events. Since we last updated you on progress, work has progressed quickly to dry the building out and the external stonework is being cleaned. Hoardings featuring photographs of local people and their connections with the historic building have been put up around most of the site. A gallery of photographs now surrounds the scaffolding, and at night the images are being projected onto the Yorkshire Street side of the building.
The next stage in the dramatic transformation will see work begin to the Clegg Street side, which will be removed to make way for cinema auditoria and a unique glass box extension. In the next few weeks the contractors will begin removing the brick chimneys and slate tile roofs, followed by the timber roof trusses, and the upper storeys of the external wall. The external wall on Greaves Street, which will form the back wall of the new cinema, has been propped to support it while the works are carried out. Both the approach and timing of the works to the original building are essential to preserve the internal heritage features of the Egyptian room, conserving it for future generations. Any materials salvaged from the building are being safely stored off site and will be renovated for use elsewhere in the new complex wherever possible.
Get involved! Please tell us your stories and recollections about the Old Town Hall, using the #historybuildingfutures hashtag on Twitter or on www.facebook.com/loveoldham

CROSSLEY COMMUNITY CENTRE OPENS ITS DOORS Hundreds of residents turned out to celebrate the opening of this exciting new facility available for everyone in the community and beyond. Inspired Living went to share in the joy.
Councillor Fida Hussain, the Mayor of Oldham, officially unveiled the new community centre on Central Chadderton’s Crossley estate as part of a fun-filled day of entertainment and activities. Peggy Cooke, 75, treasurer for Crossley Residents’ group, said: “This means so much to me. I have lived here in the same house for 46 years and we have never had a community room like this before, it’s brilliant. Now we want all the youngsters to get involved and use the centre.” Peggy also showed off her baking skills by making two cakes to celebrate the occasion. She said: “I’ve made one with rum and the other without so everyone can enjoy a slice to mark this great day.” Dorothy Holton, 65, of Rainham Way, said: “I’ve lived here for 44 years and we have always wanted something for the children to be able to use and now we’ve got it. This is a brilliant place.” Mum of five, Sandra Hearne of Petworth Road, said: “There’s so much going on here and everyone can see for themselves just what the centre can offer. My children will be using it and we want everyone to come along here and support it.” Members of the public are already using the centre and taking part in fitness classes, table tennis coaching and attending health, housing and financial advice surgeries. Weekly IT sessions, provided by Great Places Housing Group, regular arts and craft sessions, and parent and toddler drop in sessions are set to start soon. The Crossley Residents’ Social Group is also applying for funding to operate a pop-up community café from next month. To ensure everyone can have a say on how the centre is run Great Places has set up a management committee that will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the centre. The board members will ensure that the centre generates enough income to cover its costs. Great Places has also contributed £20,000 as an initial start-up grant. Cllr David Hibbert, cabinet member for housing, planning and transport, said: “Having been part of this process from the very start, there is a real sense of fulfilment being here. “People are now returning to live in the area and the opening of the centre shows how far we have come. Oldham Council, local councillors, Great Places and Wates have worked really hard alongside residents to make this happen and it gives me a real sense of pride seeing so many people here enjoying themselves.”

Halloween and bonfire special
Advice, tips and ideas on staying green and saving money!
For many, autumn is an exciting time of Halloween parties and bonfire extravaganzas! Below you’ll find some top tips and a recipe for the season. All of us know that pumpkin is a good food and it's heart breaking to know that many will be carved out and the flesh discarded purely to make Halloween lanterns. Here’s a recipe that means you won’t be wasting anything!
Pumpkin & Coriander soup Ingredients 1 small pumpkin 2 red peppers 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, crushed ½ teaspoon juniper seeds 100g celery, chopped 2 small red chillies, deseeded and finely chopped 1 litre vegetable or chicken stock Large bunch of fresh coriander, chopped Salt Black pepper 2 tablespoons of crème fraiche Pinch of Spanish smoked paprika
Method 1. Quarter the pumpkin, remove the seeds (don't discard them, they are lovely when roasted and make a great nibble). 2. Cut the red peppers in half, remove the seeds and place them with the pumpkin onto a roasting tray. Drizzle the flesh with a little olive oil and place into a pre heated oven set at gas mark 6/200C/400F and roast for about 40 minutes. 3. Remove from the oven. Scrape the flesh from the skin of the pumpkin and place to one side along with the roasted pepper.
4. Heat a little olive oil in a saucepan, add the chopped onion, crushed garlic, juniper seeds, celery and red chillies. Cook for a few minutes until the onions and celery are soft. 5. Add the pumpkin and red peppers, the stock and finally the chopped coriander. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and allow to simmer for 15 mins. 6. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and then process the soup in a blender to make it smooth. 7. Serve with a spoonful of crème fraiche over the top sprinkled with a little paprika.
Bonfire Night
Remember, remember be green this November... • Try to attend a public bonfire or fireworks display rather than having your own (which will only add to the pollution), but if this is not possible use clean, dry material in order to minimise smoke. • Remember to check for small animals and hedgehogs that may have crawled into your bonfire. Build bonfires in well lit areas to reduce the risk of wildlife getting inside. • Treat your children to a Blow Light to keep them entertained, this is the world's smallest wind generator and is a great environmentally friendly toy.
YOU CAN GLOW Our staff will once again be visiting your homes in November to make sure you’re all set up for the winter months ahead. We’ll also be providing you with energy-efficient advice so you can save on your bills. This year we are focusing on residents who are aged 70 or over, so if you would like to arrange a home visit please call Aimee Spencer on 0161 447 6097.

PUTTING THE ‘CARE’ INTO CARETAKING Terrific trio Ray Heyes, Denis Brennan and Jason Horrocks are the men who keep the different schemes of the Oldham PFI project in order and gleaming bright. Inspired Living went for a chat at Crossley towers in Chadderton, one of many sites they look after, to find out more about their typical day.
“There is no day the same,” explains Jason, who’s been at Great Places for four years. “That’s the beauty of the job. We could be cleaning hi-rise blocks one day and picking up litter another.” Routine is crucial but the trio admits that sometimes they’re dealing with unforeseen incidents like flytipping and rescuing pensioners from toilets according to Denis, who works from 8am to 5pm across Primrose Bank, Fitton Hill, the new community centres, and at Oldham’s key worker sites. You may have seen any three of them with a mop and bucket cleaning communal areas, wiping smudges off windows and mirrors within the Crossley tower blocks, emptying rubbish or carrying out minor repairs. But on top of that they also carry out fire safety inspections, help the Wates team clean and clear PFI empty homes, and assist our neighbourhood co-ordinators and managers by helping residents in need.

Whether it’s putting someone in touch with the financial inclusion team, calling housing benefit, or just giving a resident enough so they can buy a pint of milk to make a cup of tea, nothing is too much trouble for these guys. But isn’t being a counsellor, a friend, a handy man and a caretaker all at once a bit too much sometimes? Ray, who’s been dedicated to the profession for 17 years and lives on the job in a house across from the towers, thinks not. “We deal with so many different people: those with mental health problems, residents who don’t think life is worth living, old people who just want someone to talk to…and feed cake to! They’ve got nobody and won’t see people from one day to the next. We are their first point of contact really.”
From left to right: Caretakers Jason Horrocks, Denis Brennan and Ray Heyes
Here’s a typical day for our caretakers:
8am
Clean external areas – jet washing, sweeping, clearing debris!
10am

1pm
Internal inspection – mopping floors, cleaning internal windows and communal areas
3pm
Sorting the rubbish, moving furniture
Look out for their vans driving around your area! If you need to contact anyone about the cleanliness of your neighbourhood, please email OldhamPFI@greatplaces.org.uk

Neighbourhood NEWS WATES UPDATE Primrose Bank • The old community centre at Primrose Bank is now coming down and the new one will be open mid October. • The new apartment block on Magnolia Gardens has now been completed and residents will be moving in over the coming weeks. • The parking court gates at the rear of Chamber Road, Lee St and Foxglove Ave are in operation which means increased security. Residents will be provided with fobs allowing access to their own secure parking areas in the coming weeks.
MOVING ON UP Our work at Keswick Avenue and Primrose Bank is coming on a treat. Many families have already moved into their brand new, spacious homes.
We’re not quite finished yet so please bear with us. Read Claire’s story on page 12 about how her family, having moved from Greece, is settling into their new home at Keswick Avenue.
• The ‘green’ in front of the new community centre is coming on and the outline and pathways are clearly defined.
Crossley • As part of an energy efficiency drive in the next few weeks we will be upgrading the communal lighting on Lansdowne and Stockfield Mount to an LED Lighting system. This will reduce the energy used and the heat generated and is being jointly funded by both OMBC and Wates Group • Over the coming weeks Wates and Great Places will be offering training to the residents of Stockfield and Lansdowne on the recently upgraded CCTV system. Residents will have the ability to view who is calling the door entry system on their own TVs. This will give residents the opportunity to see who is calling before allowing them access to the main entrance gates and to the blocks themselves.

WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOUR GARDENS… Our ground maintenance contractor Sodexho is there to make sure all the communal areas and gardens surrounding your homes are tidy and thriving: grassed areas are cut, shrubs and trees are tended to, and hard landscaped areas are free from rubbish. But it’s your responsibility to keep your own garden tidy. Anyone not looking after their garden or outside area risks losing their tenancy with us. We never want it to get to this stage so please make sure you tend to your garden. You’ll be more likely to spend time in it!

KESWICK AVENUE CALLING
18 18
When Claire Hawksworth and her family moved from Greece two years ago they wanted to find a family home where they could be settled for a long time. They eventually found it on our new development in Keswick Avenue! Inspired Living went to meet them.
“
I’m originally from Heywood but moved to Greece, Halkidiki, and was living there for 16 years where I met my partner, Vasile, who is Romanian. Recently we decided to come back and thought Oldham would be a good starting place. We wanted a change really and there are much better opportunities for the children in the UK now. Our children are adapting really well. My eldest is 17 and at Oldham College studying English, my other daughter’s 7 and we’ve got little Ryan who’s 3. He’s just started nursery. Vasile is also studying English so he can get a job as a chef. We used to live at Abbey Hills with First Choice Homes but the house wasn’t big enough for us and it had a disabled bathroom which wasn’t really ideal when we had a little two-year old running around! I started bidding for homes before Christmas. At one point I was bidding up to ten times a day. We were so happy when we were told we’d been successful. The house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms which is good for girls! It’s big for the children to run around. I only knew of it because a friend of mine who I work with lives round here. It’s a good area. They’re still building but it’s very safe. They’re going to put greenery on one side with a play area for the children. I’m a support worker for people with learning disabilities – I’ve been working there for about a year now. It’s a really rewarding job but it’s difficult because I do two 25 hour shifts a week. I understand that the council want some people who are working because it makes for a good community. We’ve only been in a month and it already feels like home.
“
If you’re in employment, training, or make some form of contribution to community life, then you could improve your chances of getting the home you want. Working Extra homes are only allocated to bidders who have been doing any of the following for the previous 6 months: • Working at least 16 hours a week • Volunteering for at least 4 hours a week • Doing work related training • Caring for a household member (as a registered carer)
To find out more about these new schemes and how you could qualify, please contact the One Point Housing Options Centre on: T: 0161 700 6699 E: onepoint@fcho.co.uk www.fcho.co.uk or go in person to FCHO at 1 Medtia Square, Phoenix Street, Oldham, OL1 1AN
