Come Hell or High Water

by Jordan Rodriguez Spring is a beautiful time of year in Boise, with trees and flowers in bloom, temperatures warming, and outdoor enthusiasts flocking to their favorite rivers, parks, and trails. But this year, spring came with some unwelcome side effects. After one of the harshest winters anyone can remember, Idaho’s rivers are swelling with runoff. And while it’s not as serious as having to buy sandbags or flood insurance, it’s totally reasonable to wonder: Where can I go fishing when the water is raging? Let’s start with the obvious—avoid the rivers. The Boise, Snake, Payette, and Owyhee systems are all blown out, rendering fishing difficult at best and dangerous at worst. It simply isn’t worth the risk to be on the water right now. So where does that leave us? Ponds are a good place to start. They are sure to be full, and most are also teeming with fish, including stocked rainbow trout, largemouth bass, bluegill, and catfish. In Boise, Parkcenter Pond, Quinn’s Pond, and the brand-new Esther Simplot Pond are worth checking out. West of town, Kleiner Pond in Meridian and the Caldwell Rotary Pond are very popular with anglers. For those looking to venture further out, lakes and reservoirs are a good bet. Just east of Boise, Lucky Peak and Arrowrock offer good fishing for kokanee salmon and rainbow trout. Lake Lowell in Nampa is an excellent largemouth bass fishery. Lastly, C.J. Strike Reservoir near Mountain Home holds a mixed bag of species, including trout, perch, crappie, sturgeon, and bass. As you look for fishing holes, keep in mind that reservoirs tied to river systems might be tricky—ponds or lakes that don’t connect to the river are likely to turn on first. And because many species aren’t fully active until the water warms up, fishing with small, finesse lures such as spinners, plastic worms, panfish jigs, flies, or bait will likely work best until summer arrives. High water definitely means tougher fishing. But if you put in your time, you should catch enough fish to hold you over until better conditions arrive. Stay safe out there, and tight lines! Jordan Rodriguez is the fishing columnist for the Idaho Statesman in Boise. He also teaches fishing classes through The College of Idaho’s Community Learning program in Caldwell (www.cofifun.com).

STORY BY DYLAN CLINE PHOTOS BY AMANDA ANTILLA
A
t 4pm on a Friday afternoon, I picked up the phone to buzz Jake Bolin for a quick interview. Jake texted me back to let me know that he had been called to work and just landed in Orlando with less than 24 hours notice. Steve Miller needed his main guitar luthier/technician for a weekend run of shows in Florida. This is common occurrence for this family man of two girls. Whether it be sanding guitar bodies, or coaching snow sports instructors around the region, time is a precious commodity especially this time of year. Jake wakes at 4:00 am most days, and is at the gym by 5:00 am. When I ask him why he wakes so early he simply replies, “No one can take time away from you if they’re all sleeping. That time sets me up to do my best the rest of the day.” I figured I might catch up with John Bolin, the patriarch and founder of Bolin Guitars, however he and his wonderful wife Cristi had already checked out for the weekend. Bolin Guitars began in John Bolin’s small shop in the 1978. Motorcycle parts were as common as band saws and wood scraps. As a young father, John encouraged artistic expression in his children, his daughter Celeste taking up dance and Jake learning the family craft. “I always encouraged my children to follow their hearts and pursue 15
what brought them joy, then work wouldn’t be a mundane chore, but a passionate journey.” In the early years, John focused primarily on acoustics, which is a passion he still says is like a first love. One of John’s first breaks came during a ZZ Top concert in Boise when John slipped past security and showed Billy F. Gibbons a custom-made guitar, built just for him. Billy played that Bolin guitar and hasn’t put it down since. The two began collaborating on what would soon become an obsessive quest to break the traditional guitar norms, including sleek designs like the sexy “BillyBo” and the iconic Furr guitars. Over the years, the Bolins’ reputation as bad boy boutique guitar luthiers parlayed into commissioned builds from the likes of Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Joe Perry, Lou Reed, Joe Walsh, Jeff Beck, Steve Miller, and many more. Growing up in the guitar shop, Jake learned the tricks of the trade and decided to join his father in the ranks of Master Luthiers. Jake puts it in perspective, “My father is a worldrenowned guitar maker, his passion is apparent. I had no visions of grandeur this would be my path, however, I knew I must learn the craft.” In his next installment in a series of good decisions Jake would eventually find himself working with many famous artists, setting out on the road for months as a touring technician for numerous bands. Just recently he shared with me a story much like that of his fathers. He had showed up to a Mastodon concert bearing his goods, and left with 16
an order for the guitar player Brent Hinds, which can be found in the most recent Guitar World magazine. John and Jake’s guitars can be seen in numerous videos and publications, from coffee table books to guitar magazines. Jake and his handiwork can be seen with Steve Miller in the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Bolins’ work was featured as part of an exclusive collection in the Neiman Marcus Winter Holiday Catalog 2016. Their presence in a niche market is well known, however their demeanor doesn’t show it. Both John and Jake Bolin choose to operate under humility and grace. John sums it up quite eloquently, “Jake and I have something unique, something special. It isn’t the 50 years of combined experience, it isn’t the five generations of woodworkers in our lineage, it is the ability for my son and I to work alongside each other. Jake has his own unique techniques that were originated by my guidance, but are now his own. We can approach our builds from completely different aspects, however, reach the same, consistent, and beautiful results that we both stand proudly by. It is truly a bond only a father and son can have.”

Solid Grill & Bar
Nestled in the heart of BoDo, Solid Grill & Bar is definitely worthy of patio praise. They have an incredible summer cocktail menu featuring drinks like their Italian Spritz and the Thai Basil Kamikaze, with fresh muddled basil, lime, orange liqueur, and vodka. Daily live music and two happy hour specials every day of the week (4pm - 6pm and 10pm - midnight) makes Solid the place to be on these hot summer days…and nights!
The Matador
It is a perfect place to relax and unwind under the spring and summer sunshine. They’re rolling out a bunch of new seasonal menu options including drinks, appetizers, and entrees. Look for a new tasty seasonal cocktail menu soon with light, fruity drinks and beer releases from several local breweries. Cottonwood Grille likes to adapt their menu to the produce harvests and will be featuring delicious new menu items like Ahi Salad and Heirloom Tomatoes with Mozzarella. Whether you want gourmet fine dining or happy hour hot wings, Cottonwood Grille is the place to be this season! Happy hour: 3pm - 6pm everyday, 11am - 6pm on Saturday.
Every restaurant on 8th Street has a patio worth checking out, but with over 150 different tequila choices, The Matador Restaurant and Tequila Bar has put themselves on the map for one of our favorite summer spots. Along with one of the most extensive tequila selections in the valley, their made-fromscratch food is guaranteed to satisfy any craving. From grilled stuffed jalapenos to street tacos, Matador has it all. Bet you can’t finish their $5 dollar happy hour nachos (4pm - 6pm and 10pm - 1am). We dare you to try!
Payette Brewing Cottonwood Grille
Cottonwood Grille has one of the most beautiful patios in town— surrounded by lush greens and the calming sounds of the Boise River.
18
There’s nothing quite like a cold craft beer on a hot day! And to make things even more appealing, Payette’s delicious seasonal release, the Fly Line Vienna Lager, will be available all summer long. With the opening of Payette’s second location on River Street in Boise, they now produce
more beer than any other local brewery in Idaho and what better place to enjoy their massive beer selection than in their grassy outdoor beer garden? This summer, they will be adding more to the garden including extra seating. Payette is also catered by local food trucks, including Genki Takoyaki and Burgerlicious. Stop in, grab a beer, play some cornhole, and listen to live music in Payette Brewing’s beer garden.
cocktails and some people watching. Piper Pub honors the concept of community and creates an atmosphere around European ‘pub culture.’ Their encompassing menu features dishes for everyone, including their weekend brunch special from 11am - 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. In addition to their fun, inviting atmosphere, they have live music every Friday at 8 pm. Once you get settled in on their patio, be sure to check out their seasonal drink menu or try some grown-up razberi lemonade
Prost!
Back on 8th Street, the land of the patios, is Prost! a German bar in the heart of Boise. With a large bier selection and a tantalizing menu like nothing else downtown, Prost! is authentic German cuisine. Some of our favorites are their Bratwurst Sandwich and Brotzeit Teller plate with assorted deli meats, veggies, and cheeses. A perfect pairing to their various weisses, dunkels, and maibocks. Almost nothing beats relaxing on their wooded patio, watching the world go by, with a liter of the Warsteiner Dunkel in hand, a dark malty lager with hints of caramel.
The Shed
The Shed, located on La Pointe Street near Ann Morrison Park, has the perfect atmosphere for all of your drinking and dining desires. They have sports promotions, TVs, brunch specials, and a full bar all in one great location. And just in time for warm weather, their back patio is undergoing a huge remodel and will be open in May. With seating of up to fifty people, The Shed should be a frequent patio spot this season. Satisfy your weekend brunch cravings on Saturday and Sunday from 9am - 1pm for $3 dollar mimosas and bloody mary’s. They have several vegan options available as well. To sweeten the pot, their daily happy hour (3pm - 6pm) features $1 off draft beer and wine, $3 wells, and $3 fireball shots. And of course, being so close to BSU, The Shed definitely shows love to the students with $2 daily domestics with student ID.
Piper Pub
On the other side of 8th street, upstairs, is Piper Pub, on the corner of 8th and Main. The large outdoor patio wraps around the building and provides the perfect setting for one of their specialty crafted
with Stoli Razberi, raspberry puree, and refreshing lemonade. This list is by no means complete and there are so many more patios to check out this season! Others that we really love include Bittercreek, Red Feather, Juniper, Pengillys, Bardenay, Bar Gernika, Leku Ona, Taj Mahal, The Drink, Mulligans, The Sandbar, The Reef, 13th Street Pub, The Yardarm, Bodovino, The Beerhouse, The Modern Hotel, Prefunk, Barbarian Brewing, and so many more! Killer Whey!
Entrepreneur Louis Armstrong Turns Ice Cream into a Healthy Choice
Y
ou probably know that protein is a necessary nutrient your body needs every day to help build, repair, recover, and maintain muscle mass, but did you know that protein can come in the form of heavenly ice cream?
20
and farm duties. These formed the foundation of his ethics for hard work.
Hanging out with a friend after a gym workout, Louis Armstrong munched on an ice cream sandwich and mused, “Wouldn’t it be cool to have an ice cream with 20 grams of protein in it?” And so the idea for Killer Whey was born. This was in 2011. It would be 5 years before Armstrong’s brainchild would come to fruition.
While pursuing a degree in Food Science, a collaboration program between the University of Idaho and Washington State, Armstrong was introduced to his first taste of dairy production at an on-site creamery at Washington State. This experience paved Armstrong’s path to an internship at a creamery in Eagle, now home to the production of Killer Whey. The internship gave him a peek into the world of dairy product operations and development.
Born in New York but raised in Kamiah, Idaho, Armstrong’s spirit of entrepreneurship was nurtured from an early age as he grew up around entrepreneurs that included his stepfather who had a few businesses of his own. He also helped with commercial fishing
However, life had different plans for Armstrong. He moved to Sandpoint and worked for Litehouse Foods for 6 years. With a wealth of corporate experience under his belt, the dream to start his own business resurfaced, stronger than ever. Moving to Boise, GREENBELT MAGAZINE | MAY - JUNE 2017
he reconnected with the owners of the creamery with whom he had interned with. March of 2016 saw Armstrong beginning the process of creating test batches for Killer Whey. What was born from this process was a gluten-free and all natural goodness in the guise of irresistible vanilla and chocolate ice cream. Killer Whey now comes in both single and pint-sized servings, with mint chip now being available as a new flavor. Armstrong confessed that his favorite would be a toss-up between the chocolate and mint chip. Armstrong shared that Killer Whey’s mission is to “provide people with nutritious and delicious products that are made with simple and natural ingredients that consumers can understand.” He said that while he could have gone with the ‘health product’ approach, his choice was for his products to be a representation of the “funny and punny” person that he is.
Market. You may also spot him on his ice cream bike downtown with a small freezer stock full of ice cream! Armstrong is the epitome of what it means to live your dream. He shared his philosophy, “Take the risk and dive in. If you have an opportunity or an idea, you should put effort into it as quickly as possible so you have no regrets. Just get out there.” When asked what he wants consumers to know, he said, “People are skeptical, but you have to try it. You’ll be surprised to find out that it tastes just like normal, delicious ice cream.”
Within a short period of 6 months, Killer Whey has made its appearance at local gyms and on the shelves of Hyde Perk Coffee, Ranch Market, WinCo, Boise Co-op, and Rosauers. Armstrong sees a future of Killer Whey expanding into grocery chain stores within and beyond the Northwest. While I believe that any season is ice cream season, in reality, summer is probably the ideal time to enjoy the frosty treat. Armstrong looks forward to a summer of catering for events, samplings at stores and gyms, and Saturdays at the Farmers’

Idaho’s adventures in preservation Celebrating Our Historical Heritage During National Preservation Month
F
or the past 43 years the month of May has been celebrated as National Preservation Month across the country. Preservation Month was established by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to raise awareness about the power that historic preservation has to protect and enhance our historic communities. Boiseans can understand the importance of this movement firsthand, as the 1970s featured a development movement bent on destroying historic downtown buildings and replacing them with a shopping mall. Luckily, local groups like Preservation Idaho were started to help preserve Boise’s historic past and allow us to enjoy our vibrant downtown.
“With this year’s IAHPM activities, the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is trying to reach not only our typical audience, but also people who might not normally think too much about archaeology or historic preservation. We want to give people a way to tangibly connect to Idaho history and their environment, so that they’ll be inspired to get involved in preserving their own communities,” said Tricia Canaday, Outreach Historian for the Idaho SHPO.
Today, the month of May continues to be a celebration of our cultural heritage with Idaho Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month (IAHPM). This year will be Idaho’s 29th year celebrating this national month of education and awareness, with the theme being Idaho’s Adventures in Preservation. 22

he Snake River Stampede Hall of Fame Rodeo in Nampa, Idaho is back again this summer and has a great schedule in store for all! The Stampede has evolved from its roots as a bucking contest in 1911 and while previously held in conjunction with the Nampa Harvest Festival, today it is one of the Top 10 regular season rodeos in the nation. The Stampede prides itself on being family-oriented entertainment. There’s something for everyone! With over 700 contestants and prizes reaching half a million dollars, the event boasts contests in bareback and saddle bronc riding, bull riding, tie-down and team roping, steer and barrel racing, plus clown and specialty acts. The dates for this year’s rodeo are July 18-22, nightly at 7:30 pm with a matinee on the July 22nd at 12 noon. Hall of Fame rodeo announcer Boyd Polhamus will call the shots while riders compete on National Finals Rodeo bucking stock from the Cervi Championship Rodeo outfit. The top 12 contestants from the first five performances will come back on Saturday night, July 22nd, for championship finals. The entry list for this year’s rodeo is a virtual who’s who in professional rodeo. The Stampede is a must-stop for the competitors who have their eyes on a world championship. Only the top 15 money winners in each event every year qualify to compete at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada. 24
In addition to championship rodeo, there will be a calf scramble event in which 4-H and FFA members compete in trying to catch, halter, and lead a calf across a line in the arena. The event will be held on Tuesday night and also during the Saturday matinee. The rodeo also features a colorful riding club drill performed by the famed Snake River Stampeders Night Light Drill Team. This group of riders is the only drill team to be invited to ride at the National Finals Rodeo and have done so for five years. They also performed at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002. The Team will ride at every performance. In 1997, the Stampede moved into an indoor, air-conditioned arena at the Ford Idaho Center off Interstate 84. Easy access to and from the interstate makes it one of the most popular summer events in the Treasure Valley.
The 103rd Annual Snake River Stampede is from July 18th-22nd at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa Learn more about the Snake River Stampede and get your tickets at: snakeriverstampede.com

S
even years ago, I walked through the doors of Off Broadway Deli to satisfy a pregnancy craving for fried chicken, a craving I admit has never quite gone away. The best chicken in town is not the only reason that keeps me going back. It is also the warmth exuded by Stephanie Robertson-Nolind and her crew, which consists primarily of Kasey Robertson-Hammond, her sister, and Amber Hill-Wolfe, Kasey’s childhood friend. Stephanie comments, “We have known Amber forever.” Stepping into the Deli each time, my head is filled with the lyrics from the theme song from the sitcom Cheers, “Sometimes you want to go, where everybody knows your name!” Off Broadway Deli is a family-owned, family-loved, and familyoperated shop. Its story began when Stephanie embarked on her first job there when it was known as Hugo’s Deli in 1995. Kasey joined her in 1997 and Amber in 2006. In 2006, the shop was put up for sale. Stephanie and her mother, Diane Robertson, jumped at this opportunity and found themselves the proud new owners. While Diane is not involved in the day-to-day running of the deli, she plays a key role in monitoring and maintaining the finances. Paying the royalty fees for the original name of the deli proved to be too costly, and in 2009, the deli was christened Broadway Deli after its location on Broadway Avenue. Realizing that their location wasn’t giving them the exposure they needed and deserved, they decided to move to Federal Way three years ago, which Diane
26
says, “was overdue and the best decision” they made. Thus, Off Broadway Deli was born. Off Broadway Deli isn’t your run-of-the-mill sandwich shop. It offers a tempting selection of sandwiches made with fresh ingredients. Some of the popular ones include the Hot Broad, Grinder, Porkman, Larry, Fat Head, and Poor Boy. My favorite would have to be the Rachael sandwich, consisting of corned beef, coleslaw, mayo, and Swiss cheese on rye. The Deli keeps up with its customers’ requests and has added a variety of sandwiches over the years. Other delights include fried chicken, fries, house made soups, and salads. Stephanie believes in supporting locally owned businesses and includes delectable desserts from Sugar Whipped on the menu. Wanting to bring the Deli to the community, boxed lunches, sandwich trays, and catering are also offered. Stephanie says fondly, “What makes this place work is my crew and my customers. Most of my customers are like family and I couldn’t do it without them.” This has been especially evident since Kasey was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in July last year. While Kasey and her family have been dealing with this devastating experience, they are touched beyond words at how “customers have gone above and beyond with their support, care, and concern.” GREENBELT MAGAZINE | MAY - JUNE 2017
Stephanie shares, “It amazes me how many people you can touch, how many lives Kasey has touched. It has shown me how much life means. Kasey has been a trooper and has maybe taken 3 weeks off in total. She has kept working despite the surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy.” This is a testament to Kasey’s positivity, hardworking nature, and commitment to the Deli.
Stephanie advises, “Just know how much work you will have as the owner. It will take time away from your family. You have to be dedicated. I worked 12 hours a day, 6 days a week when I first started. Don’t go into it thinking you are going to make money at first. Make sure your employees are happy. I have been lucky. These girls are wonderful.”
Off Broadway Deli’s journey has been a learning experience for the Robertsons, one filled with ups and downs. Diane confesses, “We didn’t have any idea what we were getting into. It probably wasn’t a smart business move but we just jumped in. I would advise anyone getting into this business to research. To make sure you know what your costs are going to be. Taxes, payroll, employment, licenses, fees, and advertising are just some of the costs.” Diane shares that the idea behind the Deli was for it to be her retirement plan. Stephanie teases her mother, “You’ll be part of the crew one day too!”
Visit the Deli on any day and you’ll find yourself filled with a sense of home and greeted with a hearty kindness. With genuineness and simplicity, Stephanie concludes, “I love my business and my customers. I have seen children growing up, including yours. If I don’t see someone for a while, I feel like I have to call. One little old lady doesn’t have any family, so I call her. The amount of people who have compassion is amazing to me. It just shows me how amazing people really are.” Ultimately, Off Broadway Deli is not only about that special something created to satisfy your taste buds. It has the added flavor of being served with graciousness.

tap & cask New Boise Pub is the Ideal Spot for Local Beers and Delicious Food
“W
e wanted to have a place that has enough TVs to be a sports bar and enough taps to do have what any brew pub would want,” shared Wesley Harris, proprietor of the Tap and Cask. The Tap and Cask is, locally owned and operated restaurant and bar located off of Broadway Avenue in Boise, where the Tilted Kilt had been. Opening the Tap and Cask in January of this year, Harris, the previous proprietor of the Tilted Kilt had decided create a new establishment that better encompassed what he envisioned for an ideal pub.
the game and have wings. All our food is made by hand, it’s really good and not just because we make it,” laughed Harris. Two signature dishes of the Tap and Cask are the Boise Crunch burger and the Sloppy Suzy burger. The Boise Crunch is a burger where the burger patty is fried to encapsulate the flavor. The Sloppy Suzy is a burger topped with a deep fried ball of molten cheese that you squish over the patty and it releases hot molten cheese and jalapeños over the burger.
“I wanted a place for people who enjoy sports, entertainment, music food, and date nights. We’re trying to be all encompassing with the Tap and Cask,” said Harris. In this spirit, their menu has a variety of options from a few traditional pub fares as well as pasta, steak and pizza. “We wanted to create something well-rounded. We wanted a place where you could come for date night, or come down for 28
GREENBELT MAGAZINE | MAY - JUNE 2017
Harris credits his General Manager, Marshall Myern with redesigning the menu and being very proud of his accomplishments. Myern shared, “It’s very humbling to have people come and visit and to have them come back. We try to make everything by hand; good food and good drinks are made that way, put a little love into everything we do and make it special.” Tap & Cask’s hand-picked wine list will suit every palate out there and their 36 taps rotate and focus on local craft brews. They also have a selection of cocktails from classics such as gin whiskeys to more modern mixed drinks. “We try to focus on local craft beers. We don’t have 100% local beers but 100% of our stuff is good,” joked Myern. The Tap and Cask also has 56 TVs playing a variety of content including sports and music. Utilizing an app called Orange Door, customers can request songs for free from their phones from a library of over 40,000 videos ranging from modern music back to the 1930s. Harris said, “I brought my mother in here. She loved Elvis so I played an old video they had of him singing for her. She loved it and it will be very entertaining for the customers because we’ve evolved in our entertainment.” Additionally the Tap and Cask now offers breakfast on Sunday, hosts large private events, offers regular events such as St. Patrick ’s Day, and even sporting events. Also a secret speakeasy coming soon, shhh don’t tell anyone!

transform your life, one meal at a time Meal Prep by Papaya Founders Share Their Story
A
s I sit across the table from Martin Ronquillo and Norton Gumbo, the co-founders of the iOS application, Meal Prep by Papaya, their enthusiasm and energy are apparent. I can’t help but step into their world for a moment to see it through their eyes. Ronquillo, 24, a true blue “Tater” who was raised in Star is a Boise State University graduate and Gumbo, 20, originally from Michigan, is a senior at Boise State. Ronquillo’s exposure to technology began as early as his junior in high school. He started initially freelancing as a web developer and then realized his passion of being able to create things of value to others. He prides himself in being self-taught and observes that “in this exciting era of technology, with the ease of accessibility to open source technology, even those without much experience will be able to develop an app provided they are willing to put in the time to learn.” Together, Ronquillo and Gumbo bring to the table a powerful combination of knowledge and skills, Ronquillo with his business degree and Gumbo with his computer science degree. They agree, “You really don’t need one degree or the other. All the knowledge is out there and readily available at your fingertips. You should feel free to question and challenge preconceived notions.” The Meal Prep by Papaya application uses the details of a user such as the gender, weight, and height to calculate an individual’s 30
calorie requirements and provide a suggestion for macros (which are nutritional requirements). A meal plan is then recommended using an in-app recipe database created using the expertise of nutritionists, dietitians, and free recipe websites. The app currently has nearly 4,800 registered users. Ronquillo shares that the motivation of the app concept stems from his personal struggle for 8 years to lose weight. He came
to the realization that yo-yo dieting does not work and was at his heaviest and lowest point when he discovered meal planning. Something resonated. What started off as breakfast planning turned into planning all his meals ahead of time by coming up with detailed grocery lists and cooking on Sundays for the week ahead. On the other hand, Gumbo notes, “I didn’t have the same experience as Martin. I was always fit and ate healthy, somewhat. But I know that nutrition can make a big change in your daily life. I like knowing that I can help people feel better about themselves and accomplish their goals.” One might even call it serendipitous how Ronquillo and Gumbo met. Working for the same startup company in the spring of 2015, they first met in Salt Lake City during a work meeting at the company’s Airbnb accommodation. Noticing that Gumbo was the only one of his colleagues who was utilizing the groceries provided to prepare his meals, Ronquillo started an ‘off the record’ interview with questions about the types of meals and the regularity of preparation. Venture College had taught him the importance of researching customers’ needs before developing a product. By this time, Ronquillo had already lost 55 pounds and was determined to find a way to “help people eat better.” During the summer of that year, coincidentally, Ronquillo and Gumbo changed their residences and found that they lived in close proximity. Entering the Boise State Innovation Scramble in 2016, they furthered their research and development exploration. After pitching the idea at Venture College, they started developing the app during the summer of 2016 using web technology. They switched to native technology in September that year when they had 1,000 users. QuarterPageVertical-Greenbelt.pdf 1 10/22/2014 AM too difficult to While Ronquillo and Gumbo realize that 11:11:56 it is not get people to try using the app, their challenge lies in ensuring
continuity with their users. This was overcome by using feedback received to continuously upgrade features and increase the app’s user-friendly elements. Gumbo believes that “pushing through the hurdles and staying open is the key to success.” Sharing wisdom from their experience, Gumbo says, “Just know that it’s going to be rough. Even though we are self-motivated by the concept, and we believe in it, there are days when we are overwhelmed with the work and simply feel knocked down. A lot of it is just persistence and listening to feedback and not having a single notion of what you want because that may not be the right answer.” Ronquillo reflects, “Failure isn’t failure. Failure is a lesson. The setbacks that make it seem like we are ‘failing’ are signs that some change is needed. Ultimately, what I would tell a younger version of myself to do would be just set a goal and start. Things align themselves. Once you have the goal and you set it in motion, you start seeing the opportunities to get there. Often times it almost feels like luck. But I am a believer that a large part of what luck is you believing that you are lucky then going out and actually doing the things that will allow you to be lucky.” Gumbo and Ronquillo are excited to discover what opportunities the future holds for them. In the meantime, they are investing their blood, sweat, and tears to grow their company, increase the number of users and launch the Android version of the app. They are committed to doing whatever it takes to help improve the quality of people’s lives. This is their ultimate gratification.

ninja division Local Board Game Company Brings the Video Game Console to Your Tabletop
“G
ames have been a part of my life since I was a kid. They’ve been central to my life and friendships. The idea we had with Ninja Division is that with our games there is something for everybody. There is room for everyone in the tent,” shared Dave Freeman, Director of Operations. Ninja Division is a local board game publisher and design studio located in Garden City. They design and sell a variety of board games. Many of these games, such as Super Dungeon Explore and Ninja All Stars come with paintable figures representing heroes, ninjas, monsters, and more. Freeman said, “We came up with the name Ninja Division for a couple of reasons. We thought ninjas were cool, we wanted an Eastern feel, and our art drew heavily from anime and chibi (super cute) styles. The ‘Division’ part came from the organization of a military unit, a division.” Founded officially 3 years ago, Ninja Division has come a long way since its origins in 2009 when they made their first figure. 32
“Originally I’m from Nampa. I had a house and stuff here. My basement was our warehouse. I really like it here and pushed pretty hard to get Ninja Division to be in Boise and bit by bit, our telecommuters are moving here,” shared Dietrich Stella, Soda Pop Studio Lead. Within Ninja Division there are three design studios: Ninja Division itself, Shinobi 7, and Soda Pop Miniatures which have specific areas of development focus. Shinobi 7 is the studio branch that partners with high-end licenses and creates games based around that license, such as their ‘My Little Pony: Tales of Equestria’ role-playing game set to be released in March. Soda Pop produces figures for games as well as the game, Super Dungeon Explore. “Soda Pop makes all the cool stuff for Ninja Division,” joked Stella. “With Super Dungeon Explore, it’s a high fantasy game that’s happy and bubbly in an otherwise bleak landscape within the fantasy genre. We’ve been orienting our games to where whole families can play them together and both adults and kids can enjoy it.”
GREENBELT MAGAZINE | MAY - JUNE 2017
Two of Ninja Division’s most popular games are: Super Dungeon Explore and Ninja All Stars. Super Dungeon Explore puts players in a dungeon where players will either be heroes or monsters, with each side competing to clear the dungeon of the other team. Ninja All Stars is a ninja-based game where players chose a clan and select a team of recruits from their clan to fight for them. Each game can have a different challenges and the ninja team that has
the most points at the end of game wins. Also, local area game stores host periodic league nights for Ninja All Stars, where people can come and play games with other members of the community. Creative Director John Cadice, shared, “We are absolutely passionate about what we do and hope that carries through in what we make and how excited we are to make it. We have great fans! And for those people who have played games but don’t know us, we are really hoping to get our game in front of them too. We think they’d love it if they saw it.”

rustic luxury where you’d least expect it

A look into the newly reopened South Fork Lodge in Lowman
hen most people think of Lowman, they think of the town they drive through on their way from Boise to Banks. But the new owners of the South Fork Lodge have every intention in changing people’s perception of the sleepy mountain town. “We’re two hours from anywhere,” says Michael Mosher, bar manager of South Fork Lodge. “We’re offering a getaway of rustic luxury.” Chris and Beth Armour purchased the South Fork Lodge in July 2016. Both veterans, Chris served more than 20 years in the Air Force. “We’ve traveled the world and have seen good and bad ways to do hospitality,” tells Chris Armour, co-owner of the South Fork Lodge. “We saw the property about 10 years ago, and fell in love with it and all it had to offer.” The new owners got off to a hot start, unfortunately, due to the Pioneer Fire. Luckily, thanks to the hard work of firefighters, the lodge was saved and helped the lodge in more ways than
42
expected. South Fork Lodge is situated on 42 acres, all of which was used to set up the spike camp for hundreds of firemen and other personnel while fighting the Pioneer Fire. Housing all those people and vehicles gave the staff of South Fork the practice and confidence they needed for hosting future events and bringing large crowds to the small mountain town. “The main reason we love Lowman is because it’s so easy to get to. You can hop on the motorcycle after work, have a bite and a cold one, ride back and be home before sundown,” says Armour. There are nine inn rooms, priced at an average of $130 a night, each facing the south fork of the Payette River for quick access to drown a few worms. Three private cabins are available which offer beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and glimpses of an occasional elk bugling in the meadow nearby, which will cost you about $170 a night. We retreat to the mountains to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature, and the rooms and cabins at South Fork Lodge have no telephones or televisions. But rest assured, your millennial children will be able to upload their next Instagram worthy photo in the main lodge where Wi-Fi is available. GREENBELT MAGAZINE | MAY - JUNE 2017
Walking the picturesque property, a girl can’t help but imagine having her “big day” at a place like this. The 5,000-square-foot barn is being renovated with hopes of hosting weddings and corporate retreats. South Fork Lodge also offers a massive guest house perfect for relaxing before and after you say “I do.” The rooms are available individually or as a whole package. Rooms are offered on the upper and lower floors, perfect for keeping the groom from sneaking a peek at his bride. “The guest house is the crown jewel of the property,” claims Armour. “It has a huge deck that overlooks the river with gorgeous mountain views.” For those who are just passing through Lowman, you may want to reconsider. Even if you only have time for a quick lunch and stretching of the legs, you can’t go wrong with the food at South Fork Lodge. “The potato salad is a secret family recipe and is great with our burgers served on our South Fork pretzel buns along with a great selection of craft beer on tap,” Mosher says. The dining room is the definition of rustic luxury with beautiful wooden tables overlooking the meadow while a fire roars in the fireplace, adorned with a massive antler shed chandelier overhead. The patio is dog friendly and is located next to the Payette River with big screens for watching the game and fire pits to keep warm.
“There’s beautiful stargazing near the fire pit which is perfect with a bucket of beer from the bar,” Mosher says with a smile on his face, looking relaxed already. The kind folks at South Fork Lodge are wanting to change Lowman’s image and make South Fork Lodge more than just a place to stay. Plans include destination vacation itineraries including a base camp for explorations such as snowshoeing, snowmobiling, fishing, soaking in nearby hot springs, tour groups, river rafting, and more. One can’t help but admire the blood, sweat, and tears they have put into remodeling the lodge. The lodge has been in Lowman since 1937 and has endured being burned down, rebuilt, closing from 2009 until 2016, a changing of ownership, and most recently, a thorough facelift by the Armours. You can feel the passion they have for the lodge and for the town the very moment you walk in the front door and see the hosts’ smiling faces. Lowman is so much more than just a drive through town. It’s a place to slow down for a bit, listen to the silence of the mountains, throw in a fishing line with a cold one, and star gaze under an unspoiled night sky. The folks at South Fork Lodge would be happy to show you around.

the secret to aging well? five minutes
C
Genesis Longevity Center Focuses on Feeling Young at Any Age
an five minutes change your life? I asked myself that question as I waited in a Genesis Longevity Center examination room one Wednesday afternoon. I was about to undergo a MonaLisa Touch laser procedure. The research I’d done described overwhelmingly positive clinical trial results, and the procedure had been FDA approved since 2014. I had read the gushing testimonials describing the “life changing” and “relationship-saving” results. But was it really safe and painless? And could something so simple really work? Five minutes of a pleasant tickling sensation later, without any anesthesia or downtime, I walked out of the clinic hoping that I’d found a non-invasive solution to a minor but annoying problem that any woman who has given birth to a child, or in my case, four children, may know all too well. These are the things our mothers didn’t warn us about: the facial lines, the sagging chins, the problem fat areas. They didn’t talk 44
to us about menopause, or vaginal dryness, or ways to stop menstruation. But silence doesn’t make the problems disappear, and they only get worse as we age—unless we do something. Genesis Longevity Center is the answer, but it isn’t just for women. This unique new Boise clinic focuses on health issues that arise for people of both genders as they age. In addition to the MonaLisa Touch, Genesis’ services include bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for both men and women, outpatient SmartLipo surgery to destroy fat cells in targeted areas, and Novasure, another five minute procedure designed to remove women’s endometrial lining, dramatically reducing period bleeding in 9 out of 10 women while leaving the uterus intact. I met with Tamara Simon, M.D., an Idaho native and Medical Director at Genesis who has personally undergone the procedures she offers, to learn more about her practice and philosophy of patient care. “I’ve always been completely fascinated by science,” GREENBELT MAGAZINE | MAY - JUNE 2017
Dr. Simon told me. “As we age, science can help us to feel and look our best.” Dr. Simon explained that researchers now understand the aging process as chronic inflammation, a process that hormones can help to regulate. With an on-site lab, Genesis staff works with both male and female patients to balance their hormones at an optimal 35-year-old level. She also counsels patients on the most effective anti-aging diets to ensure that they look and feel young. “We treat patients from the inside out,” she stressed. But anyone over the age of 35 knows that aging takes a toll on our physical appearance. Genesis addresses all of their patients’ concerns, from hormones to excess fat deposits to lines and wrinkles. In June 2017, Genesis will partner with the Stem Cell Institute of Idaho to provide truly specialized and individualized patient care. “We can use patients’ own stem cells collected during an outpatient SmartLipo procedure to treat joint pain and as a dermal filler for facial lines and wrinkles,” Dr. Simon explained.
problem areas to destroy fat cells, increasing tone, and improving appearance. Many patients schedule their appointments on a Friday and are back to work on Monday, with no general anesthesia and only minimal side effects. While Genesis does not accept insurance for its procedures, the costs are affordable, and financing is available for qualified patients. Their website provides additional information about all of the services Genesis Longevity Center offers. Dr. Simon’s satisfaction comes from applying her love of science and innovation to her patients’ specific concerns. “It’s so gratifying to see people come in and have their lives changed for the better,” she says. “Aging is not a graceful process. But with support, people can meet and exceed their health goals.” Can five minutes change your life? Genesis Longevity Center may have some surprising answers.
SmartLipo procedures are performed at Genesis as outpatient, onsite surgery. This minimally invasive surgical procedure targets
