Idylically set in the heart of downtown Boise, on the corner of Myrtle Street and Capitol Blvd, The Inn opened its doors to the public in February of this year. With 700 pieces of art on display, strolling through the hotel gives one a feeling akin to being in a cozy gallery. Vibrant paintings and murals by Boise artist JanyRae Seda adorn the walls on each floor of the hotel. This art haven incorporates various elements of Boise, Idaho and the Pacific Northwest to offer its guests a glimpse into our area.
First impressions count. Upon entering the stylized lobby of the hotel, one is “wowed” with the warmth and charm of the carefully selected décor and furniture. A doubled-sided fireplace separates two

The hotel introduces interested guests to restaurants and events in the Basque Block, and has 2 basque-themed rooms to go hand-inhand with the experience. The boutique-style hotel offers guests 11 different room designs, and more than 30 themed rooms representing activities and places in the community. Some of these themes include the Boise Zoo, Boise Art Museum, Idaho Potato, Discovery Center, Egyptian Theater and Boise State University. Nooks with artifacts and paintings reflect these themes in dedicated rooms. The hotel and its sister hotel, The Inn at the 5th in Eugene, Oregon, are known for gracious service and mind-blowing attention to detail. A veteran traveler, the hotels’ founder and former Eugene, Oregon mayor Brian Obie has gone the extra mile to put care into every detail “to enhance and give guests an unparalleled experience.” Featuring 110 guest rooms and suites equipped with a wealth of carefully selected amenities, the rooms offer breathtaking views of the cityscape and foothills. Every room features a private butler’s pantry, affording guests full privacy to enjoy room service without ever having to open their door. Rooms also include fireplaces, 55inch flat screen TVs and open-air private terraces. Every floor of the hotel has its own business center, adjacent to a picture window with a panoramic view. Another thoughtful addition is a freezer on each

floor with pre-packaged ice, eliminating the need for noisy ice machines. Keeping in line with the “local authenticity” philosophy emphasized by Obie, the hotel partners with the restaurant Richard’s. Chef Richard Langston offers a fine dining experience featuring a modern take on regionally inspired Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, with locally sourced ingredients when possible.

SURF’S UP STORY BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS
While The Corridor Paddle and Surf Shop founder Victor Myers hails from the Midwest, he grew up kayaking for most of his childhood, so he is no stranger to the water. He and his family are avid outdoor adventurers with a wanderlust and desire to see the world. Naturally inquisitive, Myers has been taking things apart and rebuilding them since he was young, so it’s no surprise to anyone that today he’s making his living from doing just that.
Brought to Idaho by our many rivers and lakes, Myers was kayaking the North Fork long before he decided to actually move here. After traveling the world, he realized that there was something about Idaho and its beautiful landscape that he could really make something out of, quite literally. He began building boards about 10 years ago in Belize, where he was managing a private island adventure company. The paddleboarding trend was barely starting to scratch the surface at the time, but he was intrigued. Unfortunately, there was no way
18

to get boards in Belize, so Myers began to building them for himself. Over the years, he experimented with various materials and their densities, shaping them for surfing, paddleboarding and wakesurfing. He continued working and traveling, building and foraging for materials all over the world, from Asia to Guatemala. He was constantly shipping the products that
19
he was drawn to. Eventually, his passion for outdoor recreation combined with his passion for building landed him at his very own surf and board shop in Garden City. The Corridor has a vibe unlike anything in Idaho, except for maybe The Yardarm next door, which is the bar that he co-owns with his friend Guy Midnight. Myers has turned the property into a workshop and retail store where he can build as he pleases, stocking the shop with all things fun and recreational. From custom-built boards and bike rentals to RV renovation and biofuel energy development, there is definitely no shortage of innovation happening at The Corridor on any given day. What started out seven years ago as a strictly online retail platform has developed into a full-fledged brick-and-mortar storefront, conveniently adjacent to the Boise River Greenbelt and Whitewater Park. Myers took a gamble on converting the online store to a building, but the location was perfect. The Corridor opened its doors on April 15, 2012, creating a physical space for the many projects Myers brings from his imagination into reality. he Corridor is open during the warm seasons, from April through October. Myers spends the rest of the year traveling to various surf spots and spending his time in the tropics. During the warm seasons, whether you are looking to simply rent a board for the day or have one custom built, The Corridor has everything you will need for outdoor recreation and watersports.

Design and Construction Trends in Idaho
F
STORY EMILY BAKER
rom modest family homes to sprawling estates, this year’s award-winning Parade of Homes revealed designs that can be replicated at any budget. In both style and function, Idahoans are changing the way we use our homes. Designers and builders are listening. BUILDING CHARACTER Across the price spectrum, homeowners are seeking rustic finishes that give their homes a modern farmhouse feeling of “lived-in” warmth. These inviting spaces feature hand-textured walls, scraped plank flooring, barn-style doors on main floors and tiles designed to look like weathered wood and rich fabrics. Hubble Homes’ Parade home featured a Sun Valley hand-textured wall finish throughout echoing the look of plaster. These informal, durable finishes remove the stress of home maintenance, easily hiding the nicks and scrapes of daily family life. EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED Designers are using materials in bold new ways. Builders are using wood planks on ceilings and vertical surfaces to create rich, warm accent walls. Weathered, wood-style tiles are also being used on floors and adjacent walls, creating fluid continuity from the ground up. Shelburne-Marrs’ “Preston” in this year’s Parade of Homes featured tiles mimicking worn, painted wood planks on both the floor and walls of a shared bath to great effect.
Textile-inspired tiles with herringbone, houndstooth and linen textures combine style with durability and are surprisingly affordable. Laying tiles vertically on walls can visually lengthen the space and add a fresh spin. Conjuring the look of cloth imparts warmth and layers texture into rooms like bathrooms and laundry rooms. Simple, solid tiles are being laid in new patterns, with herringbone overtaking the still-prevalent chevron, creating timeless, classic looks. CASTING A NEW LOOK Alchemy is the hot, new aesthetic in home design, with metals layered all over the house. Mixing industrial steel railings with chrome finishes and oil-rubbed fixtures, creates transitional, layered styles rich in contrast. Shape and structure are used in eye-catching ways, bringing depth and interest to design. Delicate glass pendant lighting is coupled with stark, industrial, faceted fixtures or a bold look that is modern elegance. No need to match your metals -- an eclectic look ties your home together, from the kitchen to the bathroom and every fixture in between. UNWIND AND RECHARGE With our computers a footprint of their original sizes, traditional office spaces are on their way out. Tiny tech grotto docking stations in central areas have overtaken them, tucked in small corners of kitchens, mudrooms and communal spaces. Gone are the towering desktops and jumbled wires of the past. Our electronics can move from the couch to the yard with ease, wirelessly changing the way we use our favorite spaces. Turn that extra room into the craft room or fitness space that serves you best. LANDING PAD
22
For years, home buyers have put open floor plans on their “Must Have” list. But those open, communal living spaces have lost the cozy, secluded living retreats from the rest of the bustling house. Home builders and designers have solved this with second-floor family rooms. Utilizing the large landings at the top of the stairs, nestled between bedrooms and away from the central nervous system of the house, homeowners across price ranges are choosing second-floor enclaves, creating distance from the downstairs while not forcing family members to be closed behind their bedroom doors.
room are favorites. In the kitchen, functional pantries are on everyone’s list. Taking clutter and appliances off the counters and into the pantry creates a cleaner kitchen aesthetic. GET OUT AND PLAY
ONE BIG, HAPPY FAMILY Idaho families are designing multigenerational living spaces. Realtor Will Loverde shared that “Buyers are thinking ahead and designing their homes with grandparents and adult children in mind.” Builders are offering flexible home plans that swap bedrooms or dens with modified, apartment-like spaces with separate bedrooms, bathrooms, sitting rooms and kitchenettes, all on the main floor. This removes the hazards and difficulties of staircases for elderly family members and offers accessibility with privacy. Separate entrances offer privacy, while practical details, like walk-in showers and low thresholds offer safety and peace of mind. Idahoans value family and keeping their loved ones close. Home builders and designers are recognizing this trend. CLOSETS, BATHROOMS AND PANTRIES, OH MY! Gourmet kitchens and luxurious master bedrooms remain on trend, but with a fresh angle-- the more functional use space. Lavish bedroom square footage is being replaced with expansive master bathrooms and closets. Spa-like master suite retreats are now realistic and affordable in all family homes. Walk-in showers, soaker tubs, built-in linen closets, large closets and plenty of elbow
Boasting some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes, Idaho is an outdoor family playground. But our favorite varied outdoor activities have one thing in common: the gear, and where to store it. Most families would love additional storage space without having to change home facade or lose the footage across the front of their properties. The new solution is the play-inspired, tandem (or “L-shaped”) garage. This flexible design allows for three cars, but the double-deep bay stores boats, bikes, paddleboards, fishing equipment, ATVs and all the other trappings of Idaho’s outdoor lifestyle. Direct access to a mudroom or laundry room off the garage makes quick work of dirty clothes and shoes. If work is your play, the double-deep bay lends itself perfectly to a shop or workbench, equipped with plenty of space and privacy. GOING GREEN FROM THE GROUND UP Idahoans prioritize environmentally-conscious, cost-efficient construction. Residents expect their homes to mirror their values, so energy-efficient homes are in high demand. Home owners are seeking not only efficiency, but clean, healthy environments for their families. Families are buying efficient, socially-responsible homes with the highest HERS (Home Energy Rating System) and Energy Star indexes. They’re also paying attention to the unseen details, like energy efficient windows, power-ventilated crawl spaces to help provide constant circulation and cleaner air, and 2x6 framing construction for better insulation and sturdier homes.

T
he Boise River is an iconic landmark in the Treasure Valley-a welcome deviation from the desert landscape, and a feature that makes possible the very trees for which the city owes its name. In the spring, the mountain snowpack begins melting, and the resulting watershed embarks on a lengthy journey through reservoirs, rivers and countless divergences as it passes through our valley. It provides our community with a multitude of recreational opportunities, produces a fertile valley in an otherwise desert environment and draws us in with its contradictory behaviors. Each spring, it unleashes unyielding power before reducing to the peaceful current we see in the latter days of summer.
24
When last winter’s record snowfall required a sustained release of water from the reservoirs feeding the Boise River, Treasure Valley residents became increasingly aware of the watershed process. With summer’s arrival and triple-digit forecasts, the river clambers with activity as residents appear in droves, searching for a reprieve from the unrelenting heat. While nearly every Boisean finds their way to the banks of the Boise River this time of year, I encourage you to venture off the beaten path to a place known as the Boise WaterShed Environmental Education Center. Summer Edutainment Earlier this summer, I met with Cindy Busche, Watershed Program Manager, to explore the Boise WaterShed Environmental Education Center and the adjoining River Campus. I discovered GREENBELT MAGAZINE | JULY - AUG 2017
I’d inadvertently happened upon a goldmine for parents, teens or anyone looking to broaden their understanding of water resources, while having fun in the process. Free, beautifully designed and entertaining, it should be an absolute must for your summer bucket list. “We’re all about sharing the Boise River as a resource and teaching kids how to protect and conserve water so that we’ll always have the clean Boise River we know today,” said Cindy. As she escorted me around the facility, it was clear she took water stewardship seriously and enjoyed educating the public. The program is funded by private donors, the City of Boise Public Works and City of Boise Percent for Art. Young and old will appreciate the innovative exhibits placed throughout the campus. Prior to visiting the Boise WaterShed Environmental Education Center, I’d more closely associated the term watershed with a popular country music festival. After touring the facility, I now understand the proper definition of the word, in every sense. Cindy explained, “We all have this connection to water where we live, because our actions on land all affect the water quality.” Cindy also shared with me information I was learning for the first time. “All the storm drains in town go to the Boise River,” she continued. In all my years as a Boise resident, this fact slipped my notice. The center educated 22,900 citizens in 2016 and aims to increase that number each year. Find Your House on the Digital Map Built in 2008, the center was established to teach water stewardship through interactive exhibits designed to encourage natural resource conservation. The facility contains both indoor and outdoor elements, making it the perfect place to explore any time of year.

The Online Search for BBB by Emily Valla, Senior Marketplace Director As you walk up to a local business, you’ll see stickers in the window declaring business hours, announcing various memberships, and on some, you’ll see the Better Business Bureau Accredited Business seal. As a nonprofit organization for more than 100 years, the logo is recognizable and iconic. But did you ever stop to wonder, what does it actually mean to be accredited by the triple B? “Better Business Bureau Accreditation telegraphs a strong story about the business displaying the BBB Torch Seal. Accreditation tells people the business has taken an oath to uphold standards of responsiveness, truth and transparency,” Dale Dixon, Chief Innovation Officer explained. In the past 18 months, Idaho’s BBB has partnered with BBB’s in Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Montana to form BBB Serving the Northwest. Since then, the BBB has discovered that every four seconds, someone searches BBB Serving the Northwest to find a business they can trust. They help businesses and consumers resolve disputes fairly and without expensive litigation through their mediation processes. And BBB-Accredited Businesses support their education and outreach efforts, including scam warnings, consumer tips and an annual scholarship competition. “BBB Accreditation is a confidence builder for potential and current customers,” Dixon added.
In the heat of summer, the River Campus will cool you off while educating you on our valley’s waterways. The two-acre outdoor exhibit features some of Boise’s most intriguing art features, each one representing a component in the watershed process. The interactive experience allows you to control water-flow from a makeshift reservoir, divert streams, build rock dams, water crops and irrigate fields. Step inside the exhibit hall for an air-conditioned learning opportunity the whole family will enjoy. Dig into a hands-on activity with the augmented reality sandbox, or find your house on a digital map and discover the route your pipes take to the water treatment facility. he early morning light shines through the trees and awakens the seedlings from their nighttime slumber. Leaves outstretch their stalks, reaching for the rising sun. Flowers emerge into full bloom as honeybees leap from blossom to blossom. Bounding Hound Farm is the setting for a perfect fairytale, this wonderland of elderflowers and budding blueberries, amongst rows and rows of freshly grown veggies and lush, wellloved plant life. Visitors are immediately greeted by two adorable dogs, Cindy and Evelyn, the farm’s namesakes. It’s hard to believe that such a beautiful setting started out as a simple dirt lot--a lot that Anna Demetriades and her husband Dustin Scott have transformed into this magical garden where they grow and harvest their own herbs, flowers and produce.
Demetriades began studying herbology with her mother years ago. This interest grew into a passion, and she dedicated her time to creating and perfecting formulae for lotions, salves, creams and oils. The name Anthea means ‘flower blossom’ in Greek, which was perfect branding for her company. Even her last name is fitting. Demetriades is derived from ‘Demeter,’ the Greek Goddess of the Harvest.
But Bounding Hound Farm holds so much more magic than the ordinary garden. Demetriades has harnessed the properties of her plants into a high-quality line of skincare products that are natural and locally sourced. From Bounding Hound Farm, Anthea Skincare was born. 26
GREENBELT MAGAZINE | MAY - JUNE 2017
The ingredients that Demetriades doesn’t grow herself are always ethically harvested and collected with sustainability in mind. She has a strict “no palm oil” policy, ensuring that her customers get the highest quality products that are best for their bodies and the environment. She uses a water and heat distillation process to extract the oils and hydrosols from her plants. This process takes hours to complete, but she wants to guarantee that all of the extractions retain the benefits of the plants. Each unique, healing property remains intact during distillation, giving Anthea Skincare incredible power and potency.
and perfect the skin. Demetriades recently started working with Oracle Perfumes in Boise to create her own signature botanical fragrance: Ochre. Demetriades has always been interested in research and loves stretching her creative mind. Anthea Skincare has given her the venue for combining her herbology passion with a much-needed product line that is genuinely kind to the body.
Perhaps one of her biggest challenges was finding a natural preservative allowing Anthea Skincare to have a longer shelf life. She discovered natural preservatives like radish root ferment and potassium sorbate worked well. Anthea Skincare creams and oils keep the skin looking youthful and feeling soft. Demetriades also creates tinctures to help balance the body and boost the immune system. One of her favorite ingredients, the ancient lomatium root, makes a powerful tincture that increases the body’s natural ability to fight illnesses. STORY BAVANI | PHOTOS AMANDA ANTILLA knowing that it was possible,” she recalled. Her father also authored a dozen more books. Turner credited her writing style to a variety of writers. She said, “Rolf Potts wrote about vagabonding. It helped me to look at travel with a different mindset. Laurie Notaro inspired humor. Through Bill Bryson, I learned that people could travel and write about it. Sloane Crosley opened my mind to the possibility that I could write about my own funny experiences, and if I did it in a way that the reader connected with, I could maybe make a career out of it.” Turner’s first solo book, This Little Piggy Went To The Liquor Store, was the product of rebellion. She was shocked by how much unsolicited advice people gave her during her first pregnancy. Fueled with ample material, Turner went on to write two more books in that series. During that time, her long-term family travel was increased yearly. The ‘Vagabonding with Kids’ series was the natural transition of incorporated traveling with kids as its main theme. Turner shared that moments of embarrassment in her life served as inspiration for her writing too. “Any time I screw something up, I think, ‘At least this will make a great chapter,’” she quipped.
local NY times bestselling author A.K. Turner Beyond The Prologue
N
ew York Times bestselling author Amanda Turner -- A.K. Turner to her fans - confessed that she was unsure of how to classify her writing genre to when she first started out. It clicked for her when she showed her early work to a Penguin Books editors who said, “Don’t you know that humor is your strong suit? Get rid of all the serious stuff. You should be writing humor.” That day, a humorist was born. Turner wears many hats. She authors the Vagabonding with Kids series. She speaks at conferences and live comedy events. She blogs. She’s a humor columnist, a volunteer with the Idaho Writers Guild and the Boise Public Library and an adventurous traveler. While writing is her main passion, Turner admitted, “I enjoy making a crowd laugh. I am not a motivational speaker. Sometimes I entertain, but most of the time, I’m lecturing on writing or the process of publishing books.” ON INSPIRATION Turner’s earliest inspiration was her father, Midnight Express author William Hoffer. “I grew up aware of writing as a profession and

ON WRITING Many reasons motivate writers. Some write to inspire, while others write as a form of therapy. Turner writes to entertain. “I like bringing someone somewhere, giving them a smile or a laugh and providing a form of escape.” Writing also serves as a record of her adventures with her children. Turner finds the most challenging aspect of writing to be getting out that first book. “It takes courage to get that first book finished. You want it so bad that when you get close to it, you freeze up. When you get over the first time, it is easier with the following books. While self doubt never goes away, you can manage it better.” On the flip side, she relayed that the easiest part of writing was, “making fun of myself--that’s what readers can most relate to. If you are going to make fun of other people, ultimately, you have to come back to making fun of yourself. Otherwise, you’re just being mean.” Turner’s ability to schedule her writing changed when she started homeschooling her daughters this year. Unable to write every day, she now practices “binge-writing out of necessity,” whenever she gets the opportunity. Turner isn’t a believer in writer’s block. Mindful of her words, she offered, “Sit down with a pen and piece of paper. Start writing. Start transcribing a speech if you have to. You’ll start making progress somehow. It’s a job. You have to sit down and get the job done.” GREENBELT MAGAZINE | JULY - AUG 2017
Her advice for new writers? “Write more. You can talk about writing ‘til you’re blue in the face. You can spend all your money on books about writing. At some point, you just have to sit down and write. Getting involved with writing groups or organizations can be beneficial. I was scared of them at first. I thought, ‘Oh no, a bunch of crazy, nerdy writers like myself.’ Finding the right writing group is like dating. You have to find a good fit. It is really beneficial to have writing accountability partners. If you’re just starting out, you can’t be afraid to submit stories and ideas. Keep plugging away and you will get there. Write a paragraph. Little blocks of copy add up to something.” She added, “As a writer, one should never stop learning. You should always want to get better. While you shouldn’t obsess with reviews, you should pay attention. If reviews are overwhelmingly negative, you should learn from it to improve for the readers who enjoy your type of writing.” ON TRAVEL Turner’s love for travel began with her first trip to Russia when she was 15. It was organized through an exchange program and she recalled that she surviving being “dropped off with a crazy host family.” She has since traveled to countries including Greece, Ireland, France, Australia, Morocco and Italy. With the growth of her family, Turner realized the value of gifting her children with the experience of understanding different cultures and ways of living. She proudly shared, “My daughters are good travelers. There are some sacrifices they have to make, like not celebrating Christmas at home. But they understand it is an opportunity that not everyone gets.” The Turner family lives and works in another country for up to three months at a time. They frequently participate in home exchanges with families from their travel destinations, swapping homes and cars for that period of time. They have gotten more adventurous with their choice of locations, including Mexico, Australia, Brazil and soon, Spain. Turner reflected, “Many people say they will travel someday. Someday is the saddest word in the world because someday may not come.” Turner demonstrates through her Vagabonding with Kids series that traveling long term is affordable and beneficial as a family. ON AMANDA In reflecting on her childhood, Turner said, “I was always sort of a nerd. I guess there was a good mix of nerd and a little bit of a wild child thrown in there. I usually kept that on the down low, so I didn’t get into trouble much. I always loved books, writing and travel from early on.” Turner’s early ambition to become a writer stemmed from watching her father write. She also toyed with becoming a cartoonist and wanting to work for the FBI or NSA, the latter being a product of her Russian college major and growing up in Maryland, just outside of the beltway. She ended college disillusioned with her Russian studies, which brought Turner home to writing, which also meant waiting tables and accounting jobs for the next 10 years. When she’s not writing, Turner enjoys the simpler pleasures in life. “My nerdy side is happy doing a jigsaw puzzle for hours.” She spends her leisure time with her husband and daughters. For many years, Turner thought that cycling wasn’t her strength, but she recently bought a good bike and joked, “It turns out, it was the bike all along.” In nice weather the Turner family bikes the greenbelt, exploring and stopping at restaurants along the
way. She said that even though they are together 24/7 when they travel, “We still like each other, which is good.” ON LIVING Turner subscribes to the philosophy, “There is never one correct way to do something, whether it is traveling, writing or parenting.” She added, “I think my generation grew up very aware that you went to school, got a job, retired and then you died. I love seeing so much alternative thinking now. People who traveled back then were just crazy hippies. Now with the internet, people can work from any location. When I am told this is the way something has to be done, I ask myself, ‘Does it have to be?’” ON THE FUTURE Turner said that she remains open to possibilities. When she completed the third book in her first series, she knew that she was ready to move on. Currently, she is working towards seven books in the Vagabonding with Kids series, balancing her time between writing, homeschooling and motherhood. For now, Turner is following the advice she would have given her 20-year-old self: “Don’t take everything so seriously. Write more. Focus on kindness.” A.K. “O
How Australia Influenced a Boise Taproom
ur mom and dad were professors and they did a sabbatical in Australia. There was a lot of cider there and they asked themselves, ‘Why not here?’” shared Kate Leadbetter, owner and operator of Boise’s Meriwether Cider. Leadbetter, along with her mother, father and sister started Meriwether Cider in February of 2016 as a family-owned-andoperated cider taproom. “The craft brew scene has exploded in recent years. We really liked living here and thought it was the right time, in the right place, for our cider,” she recalled. Originally from out of state, Leadbetter and her sister moved here to attend the College of Idaho before becoming wildland firefighters. They have never looked back. “We love it here and the community has been really
30
great to us, too. Boise is such a unique community; people here are really supportive of local businesses. It’s very heartening to see,” she declared. Located on Chinden in Garden City, the taproom is open Wednesday through Sunday with cider production taking place on site. Utilizing dessert-type apples sourced from Idaho, Washington and Oregon, Meriwether offers seven varieties of cider during the year, four of the ciders are offered year round, and three are rotating seasonal ciders. “I would like people to know that not all of our ciders are sweet, Leadbetter explained. “We have dry ciders and other varieties that are completely different drinks than commercial ciders. For example, we have our Foothills Semi-Dry, which is an oaked cider reminiscent of a chardonnay.” Other examples of Meriwether’s offerings include the Hop Shot, exclusive to their taproom, which is a hopped cider. There’s the Gin and Juice, in which a botanical-infused gin is added to the cider, giving it a unique taste. There are fruit-flavored ciders such as Cherry Thyme Bomb, Cranberry Crosscut and more. Sangria and Peach Tea-style ciders are slated to be the seasonal offerings for July and August. GREENBELT MAGAZINE | JULY - AUG 2017
Leadbetter laughed, “Even in the fruit flavors, we just use juice but not sugar or syrup to sweeten the cider. The exception is the Apple Pie Cider; apple pie needs sugar!” Meriwether hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including attending the Boise Farmers’ Market. Additionally, each Friday and
Saturday food trucks come and park on site, and also during special events. Leadbetter elaborated, “I consider myself a little bit of a foodie. We have Grilled Cheese Nights where we have a grilled cheese truck come and park. Finding that perfect combination of cider and food is just phenomenal,” she enthused.
They press 5,000 gallons of juice at a time, which lasts about 2 months. Meriwether Cider derives their name from the famous explorer Meriwether Lewis, a family relative. Meriwether Ciders • 5242 W Chinden Blvd. Garden City meriwethercider.com and follow them Facebook and Instagram

The Accidental Tea Company
t all started with an accidental two-month honeymoon. Ashley and Austin Townend, the founders of Wanna Matcha, traveled out of the country to celebrate their wedding for a month, but wound up staying for two.
After their extended honeymoon, the couple returned to Boise, where Ashley knew something had changed. “I was home and getting low-key obsessed with this,” she explained, “I knew we had to do something!” The idea for a matcha bar began forming.
“It was originally going to be a month in Europe, but we messed up our return date” Ashley explained. “It was the best mistake.” While there she found something that would turn into her lasting passion. “We discovered matcha while we were in England. We spent two weeks in Brighton, and went into a tea shop, and there it was,” Ashley said.
“We didn’t know if a matcha bar was going to work. We knew we had to start at the Farmers Market,” she recalled. They began playing around with different ingredients. After researching and learning the science behind the tea, Ashley decided to create one-of-a-kind healthy recipes.
The small shop was giving samples of matcha, the powdered green tea they tried for their very first time, and fell in love, again. Ashley became a matcha fan, with no thought of it becoming a career.
32
“We discovered it all while we were doing it.” Once they simplified two pages of possible recipes for their stand into fiv drinks, they were ready to start selling. Next up was a creative name for the matcha bar. “There’s a great company called Cha-Cha Matcha, and that was my first idea.” Ashley said. “I did a lot of brainstorming of what would be fun. I was just sitting on my couch muttering to myself, ‘Cha cha matcha, wanna matcha… I wanna matcha you wanna matcha.’ It reminded me of the old ‘I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!’ saying.” GREENBELT MAGAZINE | JULY - AUG 2017
After finalizing the name, Ashley and Austin began the long waiting process for their stand’s approval from the Boise Farmers Market. During the wait, they began planning how to introduce this new concept to Boise. Wanna Matcha was officially included in the Boise Farmers Market for 2017. Opened on April 1st during the first day of the Boise Farmers Market, Wanna Matcha has remained a Boise hit. “We stay busy!” Ashley exclaimed. Trial and error was key when trying out different recipes. “When creating drinks to put on our menu, we think ‘This is good, let’s try it out!’” she shared. “We want our menu to change a lot, but for starting out, we’re keeping it the same for a while until we understand the seasons of the farmers. Next year, we’re preparing to change it every month.” Wanna Matcha uses all locally sourced ingredients in their 10 matcha mocktails, and incorporates crops from Boise farmers such as beets, basil and tumeric, which is mixed on site into the drinks. Customers can find something sweet, like the unicorn drink made with ingredients such as turmeric coconut milk and beet simple syrup, or something spicy like the ‘Some Like It Hot,’ which includes jalapeno and mint. Ashley is the designated matcha maker. “It’s kind of my baby,” she said. “Austin’s naturally good with people. Also, I’d forget to give people a punch card or something,” she laughed. In the future, Wanna Matcha may become a year-round drinks resource for Boise. “Our goal is to open a spot somewhere,” she opined. “We’re not just sitting on that idea, we are constantly working on it. As soon as it can happen, it will. We’re considering a delivery service as well, since the coffee world is starting to deliver coffee,” she added.

Idaho’s Top Tourism Draw
daho is filled with little hidden gems--lakes, hot springs and tasty restaurants. Idaho also has a big gem tucked into the Nampa community. The Ford Idaho Center is one of the most versatile entertainment centers you could ask for, just a 20-minute drive, 15 miles west of downtown Boise.
Owned by the city of Nampa, the Ford Idaho Center has been open for music, sports and horse lovers for more than 20 years. In 2014 the venue was still called the Idaho Center. They announced a new title sponsor, Ford, who agreed to give $1 million dollars to the city of Nampa over the next five years. Few cities the size of Nampa, or even Boise, have venues like the Ford Idaho Center. The venue includes an amphitheater that holds 10,500 people, an arena that holds 12,279 people, the Ford Theater with a capacity for 2,500 people, a sports complex and a horse park. This four-in-one complex brings great flexibility to the area, allowing for multiple events to happen at one given time. For example, this summer the two largest events, the Lady Antebellum concert and the Idaho Cutting Horse Association Show, will be held simultaneously. The venue was originally built for The Snake River Stampede. It was bought by the city and has been growing ever since, eventually 34
overtaking the Nampa Civic Center. The sports complex is the home of the Boise State University indoor track and field team, with the capacity to host events like the Monster Truck Jam. The venue is also hosts popular outdoor concerts during the warm weather months. Recent concerts have included Chance the Rapper, Tool and many others. Upcoming shows will include Train, The Head and The Heart, The Piano Guys and Lady Antebellum. In addition to the sporting events and concerts, this venue generates thousands of dollars from the horse shows throughout the season of March to October. The horse park is the number one tourism generator in all of Idaho. They’ve started building more hotels in Nampa to accommodate the large number of people flocking to the Ford Idaho Center for these horse shows. The Ford Idaho Horse Park has hosted thousands of horses in events such as Team Roping, local 4H, Regional Arabian Horses, Quarter Horse Association, Mounted Shooting, Dressage, Cutting, Painted Horse and many others. The FIC does not discriminate; they have 596 stalls and space to rent additional space as needed. Ember Gutierrez, head of marketing for the FIC explained, “The number of horse stalls that we have available for events is unique to us.” 16200 N Idaho Center Blvd • 208.461.6185 • fordidahocenter.com

Boston Marathon-Qualifying Tribute Race
etsy Luce and Jan Bastain, two of the most energetic, women in Boise have made Boise the destination for a world-class Boston-qualifying marathon event for the past two years, attracting runners from all over the globe. Honoring their friend Shay Hirsch, who died after an 11-year battle with cancer, Jan and Betsy created the “Onward Shay!” race with the help of Shay’s husband, George. Onward Shay! is a tribute to Shay bringing runners together from all over the world, while giving back to the Boise community. “We are so happy to bring this event to Boise. It helps grow this city in a good way,” said Bastain. Onward Shay! is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with proceeds going back into Boise nonprofits. Shay’s favorite book, The Wizard of Oz, serves as the theme for Onward Shay! with messages of courage, heart and bravery. These are the pillars of this race, mirroring Shay’s beliefs. Celebrating its second year on October 29th, Onward Shay! is enjoyable for the entire family. This year, the race includes a kids’ race called, Run Toto Run, a 5K, and a 10K, all in addition to the half and full marathon. “We are excited to add the 5K and 10K distances this year. This makes the race accessible for every type of runner,” said Luce. If you’re thinking about running a race this fall, Onward Shay! is it. Where else can you run alongside runner royalty like Amby Burfoot, Nancy Ditz, Nick Symmonds, Bart Yasso, Alexi Pappas, Dick Fosbury, Frank Shorter, and George Hirsch, while supporting an amazing cause? “The feedback we received last year was overwhelming,” 36
said Bastain. The track itself is fast and flat, giving participants a glimpse of Boise’s finest. Runners will get a scenic tour of Boise’s best as they run through Harrison Boulevard, 13th Street, the North End, downtown Boise, Boise State University, Julia Davis Park and more. “This race showcases what makes Boise so great,” said Luce. “You’re running through the beautiful neighborhoods of Boise, while experiencing this amazing and giving community, from the participants to our sponsors.” This year the start and finish lines will be at Payette Brewing Company, one of the sponsors of this year’s race. They’ve created an exclusive brew just for the race called, Onward Shay! Ruby Red IPA, which will be available at the brewery during and after the race. “Our greatest accomplishment is pulling this off. From becoming a 501(c)(3) organization, meeting with sponsors, getting permits to close the streets and marketing this event, making Onward Shay! happen was our goal from the beginning,” said Luce. “Boise can join the ranks with other major cities that have marathons and be a destination race, attracting runners from all over the world.” It’s no doubt that as Onward Shay! Continues, it will only get bigger and better, help grow Boise and establish a lasting tradition commemorating Shay Hirsch.” Registration is now open for the Onward Shay! Their Approach to VR Training Can Save Lives
lthough virtual reality technology has been around for decades, creating an affordable, easily mass-produced system used to be science fiction. Today, recent industry breakthroughs have made virtual reality (VR) applications possible on a greater scale. When VR technology became affordable and accessible, David Cleverdon, owner of Boise-based marketing company DTX Creative, was quick to realize the possibilities.
executive to becoming the leader of a nimble startup. This wasn’t easy. Through feedback from staff, she forged a healthy company culture that allowed them to acquire and retain key employees. Lastra also had to overcome her fear of public speaking, so she confronted it head on by accepting any opportunities to publicly speak. Today, she is a sought-after presenter who was recently asked to keynote a prominent technology event.
Cleverdon saw opportunity. He could transform conventional training techniques with the interactive, immersive nature of VR. For example, VR could optimize the quality of training for first responders, such as paramedics or law enforcement officers. This could mean the difference between life and death. To achieve his vision, Cleverdon needed a partner who could help him create a world-class VR company. He hired Jennifer Lastra, who had proven history in business development and project management. Together, they rebranded DTX Creative and formed 360immersive, with Lastra as Managing Director and CEO.
Lastra’s leadership has been instrumental in the company’s mission–to use immersive technologies to enhance training while improving team communication and collaboration. Although virtual reality has been primarily associated with gaming, Lastra and Cleverdon recognized how the technology could become a disruptor in the training industry. Increasing the information retention rate is a key goal for trainers, but existing training models often fall short.
After forming the company, Lastra had to overcome several obstacles. They found a way to finance 360immersive and acquire tech talent, but Lastra had to transition from being a corporate 38
Most training is conducted with live presenters, using the infamous “death by PowerPoint.” Online courses are more cost effective, but the lack of engaging content often causes users to click through content without learning anything. difficult to duplicate. 360immersive addresses these challenges by providing an affordable, easily replicated experience to create interactive content. According to prominent educator Edgar Dale, individuals remember 90% of what they say and do, which is achievable through VR simulations. 360immersive provides an affordable VR training solution with their uShareVR platform, which can be accessed through inexpensive VR headsets paired with mobile devices. VR content allows users to experience all the sights, sounds and emotions of a real-life scenario in a 360-degree environment. It provides an engaging way to train with risky scenarios, such as performing a complex surgery or responding to an active shooter. The VR course module allows users to experience learning objectives in real time, and can track how users are performing. These modules are available through a downloadable app, so training is easily duplicated. Users can repeat the course as often as they need. This training is a game changer, especially for public service organizations in rural areas with smaller budgets. Lastra is passionate about the company’s mission to provide virtual reality training to a worldwide market. She explained, “At 360immersive, our vision is to prevent fatal and non-fatal injuries from occurring, one VR training experience at a time. The success of our mission saves lives and also impacts how organizations attract, prepare and retain tomorrow’s workforce.” 360immersive’s innovation has attracted interest from federal, state and local organizations across the country, including the Department of Energy and counter-terrorism organizations. Despite their success, Lastra and Cleverdon haven’t forgotten their Idaho roots. They are founding members of the Idaho VR Council, an organization committed to creating a thriving VR industry in Idaho. 360immersive also provides support for the Idaho Technology Council, which helps Idaho technology companies start, grow and thrive.
A legacy of skill, honesty, and integrity lives on.

H
Why One Boise Couple’s Fast Food Revolution
ave you ever wanted to eat healthy but simply couldn’t’ afford to, didn’t have the time, or just downright didn’t think it tasted as good as, say, a cheeseburger? If so, there’s good news. You’re like the majority of Americans who find it challenging to make the sacrifices necessary for a healthy lifestyle in the modern world. The better news, however, is that one Boise couple is changing consumers’ idea of “healthy,” one store at a time. Eric and Zaira Sutherland opened the doors to their new franchise, Fresh Healthy Café, in downtown Boise on May 13th at 860 W. Broad Street. Immediately upon walking in the front door, customers are met with earthy, vibrant colors and a menu filled with healthy meal choices. Customers can choose from wholesome entrees such as paninis, wraps and protein bowls, or nutritious fillers like smoothies, soups, salads and fresh-squeezed juices. Affordable Healthy Eating The best part? Each of these delicious menu items can be yours in five to 10 minutes for under nine dollars. “We’re trying to take the fast food image in people’s heads and flip it,” voiced franchise owner Eric, brimming with ambition. Like countless other fast food chains, Fresh Healthy Café prides itself on versatility, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner from 7 a.m. 44
to 9 p.m. every weekday. As Marketing/HR Manager Zaira puts it, Fresh Healthy Café’s goal is to “provide the best possible, easiest access to the freshest and healthiest food.” But why? What is driving this couple to try to revolutionize a fast food industry that, quite frankly, doesn’t value the “freshest and healthiest food?” Awakening Good Health Flashback to five years ago in Puerto Rico, when Eric and Zaira first met. Zaira, then 26 years old, had just been diagnosed with high blood pressure and prescribed pills to take twice daily to treat her condition. In total disbelief, she took one pill and then opted to fight it “with positive thinking and nothing else.” The always health-conscious Eric was concerned with Zaira’s health and convinced her to try a 10-day red and green juice detox with him. The detox was wildly successful and awoke the health nut inside of Zaira, prompting her to change her lifestyle for the better. “I haven’t taken a single pill since,” she beamed. The Tipping Point A tight-knit family, Eric and Zaira relocated to Boise to raise their two young children and live near Zaira’s sister. But life happened, GREENBELT MAGAZINE | JULY - AUG 2017
and Eric found himself frequently traveling for his work as an electrical engineer. “He was on the road all the time,” recalled Zaira, adding, “I was home with the two kids 10 days, sometimes 17 days at a time, by myself.” Meanwhile, Eric found out firsthand how challenging it can be to eat healthfully on the road. With constant flights to catch and deadlines to meet, he was unable to make the healthier food choices he was so accustomed to eating and deeply believed in. “Everything you put in your body contributes to how you feel,” Eric said, with conviction. As a result of his traveling struggles, the seed was planted in Eric’s mind for a healthier fast food alternative to rescue other busy, on-the-go eaters from what he endured. “One day he called home and said he’s done traveling, he’s done with the distance, and he wants to be home,” said Zaira, her voice warming at the memory.. “I made a promise to her a long time ago that we would settle down and be a family,” explained Eric. Being a man of his word, Eric began researching how to make his vision for healthier food options a reality. He stumbled across Fresh
Healthy Café, reached out to founder and CEO Jeff Parker, and began the process of franchising last October. Just seven short months later, the Sutherland’s find themselves “taking care of our health, our community and our environment,” according to Eric. The Boise downtown location is Idaho’s first Fresh Healthy Café location, but expansion is already on the horizon. Eric and Zaira are currently eyeing additional locations in Boise, Meridian and Eagle as they attempt to revolutionize the fast food industry in Idaho. At what Eric and Zaira hope is only one of the first steps in a long journey towards making Idahoans everywhere greener, cleaner and healthier, there are plenty of unknowns. But one thing is certain: Fresh Healthy Café is here to stay. “We’re really dedicated and committed to this,” Zaira declared emphatically. “We’re just getting started.” Fresh Healthy Café is poised to carve out a niche in Boise’s growing food scene. Be part of a revolution and get on down to Fresh Healthy Café—fair warning, though: fast food may never be quite the same for you again. “W
hat if you brought in a few fake pine trees and painted the bathroom door like an old-timey outhouse with a half-moon cutout?” Kelsey squinted at the space near the back of the shop next to the kegerator as I made suggestions on how to enhance the store’s Pacific Northwest, outdoorsy vibe. “Oh! You could use part of a big log as the table here and get a luxury camp chair instead of this one.” I gestured to the stuffed, bright yellow chair I was sitting in. Once she started chiming in about the addition of glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling, I knew Kelsey was on board with building an indoor campsite to complement the VSSL gear and Levi Commuters shelved throughout the space. Kelsey Miller and her sister Megan Quintero are the owners of KEYSTONE station in downtown Boise. Filled with work-toweekend wear for the typical Idaho guy, KEYSTONE is the little brother to Boise’s popular SHIFT Boutique. The shop came to fruition in February of 2016 after hosting a successful men’s popup during the holidays, plus the serendipitous availability of retail space just around the corner from SHIFT. “We kind of guessed where we wanted to start,” said Kelsey. She recalled delving into the world of men’s fashion by volunteering Megan’s reluctant husband to model clothes while they studied how each piece fit. Megan opened their first order from RVCA, looking at the shirts and remarking, “Don’t you want to date this guy?”
46
For two women with very little experience in the men’s clothing industry, their eye for everyday dude wear—specifically in Boise— is spot on. Kelsey noted that nearly all of what they’ve brought into the store has been met with excitement from customers shopping for everything from boots to bottoms, and button-ups to basics. Having known Kelsey for a while, I attribute this success to the sisters’ ability to channel their personalities into their brand. What you see is what you get; if consistency is your thing, they’ve got you covered. It doesn’t hurt that KEYSTONE also partners with nonprofits and a variety of local businesses on a regular basis to treat their customers and support their fellow entrepreneurs in the Treasure Valley. “We wanted to do this because we saw an opportunity for the business side, but more importantly we want to build a longterm relationship with the community,” Kelsey said. “We want to help Boise grow.” KEYSTONE has welcomed local brewers like Payette, Powderhaus and Edge Brewing to pour on site as a treat for customers during special events. Since we’re on the topic of beer, one of my favorite characteristics that resonates strongly within KEYSTONE and SHIFT is that Kelsey and Megan keep things simple. Take for example, the inspiration for KEYSTONE’s name: “My father drinks a lot of Keystone Light,” Kelsey explained, poker faced. I’ll drink to that, and you should, too. Stop by KEYSTONE station for a brew, an unexpected find and a purchase that will leave you saying “I finally have a place to shop!” GREENBELT MAGAZINE | JULY - AUG 2017
Restoring Peace of Mind The Cure for Homeowner Headaches
by Troy “Hoop” Hooper In 1999, Bill Ryan had no idea that his next 18 years would be with ServiceMASTER Restore in Boise. With determination and an entrepreneurial spirit, he started his own franchise with this globally renowned company. Ryan ran it until 2009, when Butterfield Inc. purchased his business and added a construction division, asking Ryan to stay on as the General Manager. Today, with more than 18 years’ experience as the longest-standing ServiceMASTER Restore in the Treasure Valley, Ryan and his team take pride in their purpose statement--every morning they wake up determined to be respectful and make others feel valued. The company’s core values are being engaged, prepared and practicing teamwork. Their stringent requirements for capable, hard-working techs with solid work ethics can make it difficult for them to fill open positions. “Never forget who you work for and what your brand stands for,” Ryan advised. Over the years, they have built relationships with insurance companies, adjusters and homeowners to grow to where they are today.

“We’re here to restore peace of mind for homeowners in the event of a loss with fire, water, mold or trauma,” noted Troy “Hoop” Hooper, head of Business Development/Marketing. “We are the pill curing the headache when people experience these kinds of losses. “Our business is based on relationships and referrals,” Hooper continued. “We look at a loss like looking at both sides of a penny. On one side, there is a home; on the other side is the homeowner. We take care of the homeowner first.” “ServiceMaster Restore stands out among others in their industry,” noted Brandon Clark, an Independent Broker at Ricketts and Associates .Clark shared that the company educates homeowners on the claims process, helping them to understand what is taken care of by their insurance, to cope with their loss and providing honest work in an industry that can be known for nickel-and-dime tactics. ServiceMASTER Restore walks homeowners through every step in the process of restoring their home. Hooper shared this advice for homeowners “Do seasonal checks around your house. Repair things before they get too bad. Know where your water shut-off valve is located.” A recent client’s home flood prompted Hooper’s remark. “A homeowner was out of town for the weekend,” Hooper recalled. “She had 30,000 gallons of water flooding her home, just sitting there for three days. The city of Boise finally shut off her water. When we met her and began working, she was overwhelmed with emotion. We tried salvaging her home’s contents. One of our techs found an item of considerable sentimental value and quickly brought it to her attention. When we told her that we would be restoring it, there were tears and hugs all around. We finished doing the water mitigation and reconstruction quickly. She thanked us for going above and beyond, and we replied “That’s just what we do—‘Restore peace of mind.’” A member of the Meridian and Caldwell Chambers, and contributor to various charitable organizations across the Valley, ServiceMASTER Restore believes it is vital to be engaged with the community and making a difference. This past year they worked with the Soroptimist Club on their holiday gift program for elderly and children, providing pick-up service for gifts and sharing their warehouse for gift storage and distribution. ServiceMaster Restore works with all insurance companies and is a preferred provider for insurers including Farmers, State Farm, Allstate, American Family and many others. the yardarm Where Funky Meets Fun
yärd-ärm: the outer extremity of a ship’s yard When the sun is over the yardarm, it’s time to start drinking!
N
estled in Garden City next to Whitewater Park and a stone’s throw from the Boise Greenbelt is The Yardarm—a fully up-cycled bar with a surfer’s beach vibe that will transport you to a tropical oceanfront location in the matter of seconds. From the minute that you sit down on one of the handcrafted, wooden bar stools and dip your toes in the ‘sand’ (it’s actually decomposed granite, so it’s less likely to stick to your feet) you’ll be hooked! The first of its kind in Idaho, The Yardarm was built from an old shipping container. The concept for this unique bar was born over beers between the two partners, Guy Midnight, who managed bars for years, and Victor Myers, the owner of the Corridor Surf Shop next door. With the completion of Whitewater Park, Idaho 48
finally put itself on the map as a surf spot. Once these boys were done on the water, they felt like something was missing…beers-and a sandy spot where they could relax! The two friends decided to make this concept a reality. They curated some up-cycled materials and got to work building The Yardarm. Practically everything been repurposed, with refreshing ingenuity and environmental awareness. The walls were built from recycled surfboard foam. The entire bar top was crafted from a fallen bridge beam relic found in the Boise River. The tables are salvaged wood from beetle-kill pine. The Yardarm’s opening day was on August 12, 2016, and business has been booming ever since. The entire bar is outside, so the Yardarm is open during “hoodie weather,” from spring to fall. Their GREENBELT MAGAZINE | JULY - AUG 2017
hours of operation are totally dependent upon Mother Nature, so it’s wise to check their Facebook page before hitting the sand. Their fare is upscale street food taken to a new heights—like carnitas fries, fish tacos with Baja Brussels sprouts, or asparagus with aoli—from Gem Street Kitchen, their on-site food truck. Their motto is “Farm to Street,” promising locavore, quality ingredients for all their innovative dishes. Gem Street is the perfect accompaniment to The Yardarm’s local, rotating craft beers and regional wines. All of this converges with the backdrop of periodic, live music and the best roofless view in town to watch the sunset. Midnight has managed several local spots in Boise, including Bittercreek, the Reef, Red Feather and Parilla Grill. Once the idea came for The Yardarm, he was ready to be his own boss and create something unique to Idaho. “I didn’t do this to become rich,” Midnight admitted. “I did it to support my family and have a good life.” During the off season, Guy and Victor take time for their many other hobbies and ventures, which usually involve hitting the waves in tropical settings while traveling the world. Midnight said he plans for the Yardarm to remain a fun, funky place to enjoy the warm seasons with a refreshing beverage and simply forget you’re not beachside.

PRODUCTION SPONSOR:
by Jordan Rodriguez “Fishing is way easier if you have a boat, right?” This is one of the most common questions I get asked by people interested in fishing. The basic answer is yes—having a boat opens up many different angling opportunities. You can cover more water in less time, particularly on slow days, or when fishing vast lakes and reservoirs. But that doesn’t mean fishing from the shore is bad, or that fishing from a boat is always going to be better. I know both sides of the equation. Growing up, my family never had a boat, so 99 percent of my fishing happened on shore. I learned many valuable lessons while fishing from the bank: • How to read a river for good fishing holes • How to land large fish • How to safely wade and navigate the shoreline. To this day, I enjoy the physicality of fishing on foot. When you hike several miles into a fishing spot, wade waist-deep through a strong, chilly current, and pack out the extra weight of a stringer full of fish, fishing feels like an extreme sport. In recent years, I’ve expanded my boating resume. I started out fishing Lake Lowell, C.J. Strike, Lucky Peak and other local waters from friends’ boats. Last fall, I finally purchased my own vessel, a 14-foot aluminum model. It’s not fancy, but it definitely does the job. In addition to covering more water, a boat allows you to fish places you couldn’t reach from shore, or to find better casting angles. You can also go trolling for trout and kokanee salmon. As an added bonus, it’s easier to rescue snagged lures without taking a swim! So yes, boat fishing certainly has its perks. But if buying or storing a boat isn’t in the cards for you, don’t let it keep you from fishing. Idaho has thousands of spots you can try on foot, and hundreds you couldn’t access with a boat, anyway. If you want to expand your repertoire without breaking the bank, try investing in a float tube or kayak—small watercraft that offer many of the benefits of the boat at a fraction of the cost and upkeep.
