spoke With the light of a New Year shining over Boise, 2016 is looking to be another exciting year of growth for Boise residents. Winter is in full swing, with all of our excellent tubing, skiing, and other winter recreation outlets open for business. Of course, with a community as vibrant and varied as ours, there’s something for everyone—even if you’re not the best in the snow. We’ve tried to cover a lot of what’s happening in Boise this holiday season. We’ve covered Joseph Sesay, an inspiring

10

young man studying at Boise High all the way from Sierra Leone. He arrived here from Africa blind, but with the help of his host and the community at large they raised money for him to receive cataract surgery, allowing him to see the world for the first time. Despite the problems our country and our community faces, it’s important to be reminded of the good that is happening in the world. Luckily for us, Boise is a wonderful community and a great place to spend the holidays with family and friends.

This issue is yet again another wonderful collection of stories, activities, and places to explore. There’s no way this short note does it any justice, so read on! Find your favorite story and let us know what you love about Boise.

INDIAN CREEK WINERY GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

For it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart. It was not my lips you kissed, but my soul. - Judy Garland

Love isn’t a one day event. It courses through our beings as sure as oxygen fills our lungs. Even though love should be expressed every day of the year, it is easy to get caught up with the day-to-day and forget what matters most. February 14 which has been designated as Valentine’s Day gives us the opportunity to reconnect with our loved ones. This year, dare to be unconventional and shower your partner with the gift of presence instead of presents on Valentine’s Day. BY BAVANI PUROSHOTHAMAN 14

Boise has some cool spots to chill – these 6 fit the bill! 4

The Springs

A hot spot just 45 minutes from downtown Boise is The Springs, which opened on Valentine’s Day in 2013. Ice and snow free walkways and lighted footpaths guide you to the rejuvenating waters which provide the perfect setting for star gazing. A bonfire at the edge of the pools during the winter months allows warm-up time when you’re not soaking but still want to be outdoors. A 40’ x 80’ geothermal pool or a 16’ hot tub raising the mercury to 104 degrees are two options at this hot springs resort located on 80 acres of wooded bliss. The restorative mineral waters at The Springs are ideal for soaking stressed and tired muscles. Geothermal water has been pumped throughout, including the changing rooms. A fireplace in the main lobby is a cozy spot to sit and share stories.

Mark As Handy’s antler art evolves, she follows new designs that occur to her, exploring and expressing the concepts as fully as possible. Sometimes an idea snowballs and opens up new opportunities. For example, her colorful, varied images of the state of Idaho have sparked interest in fashioning ornaments of other states. Her artistic vision is to keep on creating here in Boise, moving into higher-end jewelry and interior design such as wall art and handles. Handy has hired an assistant for help to keep up with the demand for her designs. And she’s looking for the right setting to display and sell her work in Idaho.

Idaho talisman

Walk into Handy’s workshop, and you’ll see stacks and piles of whole and cut antlers, on tables, on counters. Her medium seems unlimited; so does her artistry and future.

WISDOM & WIT “Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It’s perfect when it arrives and puts itself in our hands. It hopes we’ve learned something from yesterday.” - John Wayne “Talking nonsense is man’s only privilege that distinguishes him from all other organisms.” - Fyodor Dostoyevsky “In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present.” - Francis Bacon “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” - C.S. Lewis “It is our choices... that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

Artist Geo Handy’s surprising medium and designs

- J.K. Rowling

by Laura Wolstenholme, photography by Mark Dyrud

“If we are intended for great ends, we are called to great hazards.”

Method

Medium Hold a piece of Geo Handy’s art, and you might think you’ve fallen into a fairy tale world; her work is that mysterious and authentic. What’s more, you’ll be touching, literally, Idaho’s wildest realm. Handy’s medium, the shed antlers of elk, deer and moose, originates from the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, Idaho’s central core. Her father, Dave Handy, with the help of his trained dog, travels through the wilderness collecting the antlers that are shed each year by these wild animals. Handy’s striking art that includes pendants, rings, buckles, ornaments and hats, is cut and carved from antler. She explains that when she cuts into an antler, she doesn’t know what to expect. Antlers are quite varied in quality, and Handy says she’d like to understand what makes some antlers usable, and some not—she suspects that diet has a role. Her ideal antler is “creamy white and dense, with very little marrow.” Some antlers have a lot of marrow, making them less usable. Her favorite antler is moose, though these are less common. Antlers of animals that have been killed are unusable because blood is still circulating through the antler.

20

- John Henry Newman

Always artistic and visionary, Handy was inspired about 7 years ago to create a gift for a friend from an antler her father had brought home. She created an image of a tree, a design that she’s well known for now. Intrigued with the medium, Handy began to explore creating more ornaments and jewelry from antler. She first used a Dremel power tool that she found at a pawnshop, ultimately burning through a few until she purchased a Foredom flex shaft, the tool she uses now. She learned to incorporate other materials into her art such as gems, crushed materials, and silver. Through trial and error, and a lot of experimentation, Handy has created a body of work that has found customers and admirers.

A MUST READ In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick

Handy’s style ranges from delicate to bold; but each creation is signatory, elaborate, and unique. Her jewelry is often worn as signature pieces for a special occasion or event. Handy says she likes the uniqueness, the originality of her medium and what she can create from it. She says she likes to create a design, and then push the elaboration even further. Her art, she says, is “not inspired by others’, but from her heart”; there’s really nothing to compare it to, and she prefers it that way.

preserving boise The Heritage Homes Tour and the importance of keeping Boise’s historic districts intact

CLEAN. SMART. ECONOMICAL.

This house represents the most articulate expression of the Storybook Style in Idaho. Designed by Crandall, his daughter recalls that the home was conceived based on the books which she and her sister shared. The house features whimsical elements. The swayed, multi-gabled roofs of the house are complimented by half-timbered and stucco walls which taper upward from a red, stone boulder foundation. Stone clusters puncture the stucco and smallpaned windows are paired with heavy, dark doors. A native of American Falls, Idaho, Crandall homesteaded near Jenny Lake in the heart of the Tetons in a log cabin studio which still stands today. His hand-tinted photos and brightly painted landscapes provide a historic record of the Grand Teton Park. Harrison (Hank) and Hildegarde bought 3 acres on the Boise Bench in October 1932 as a seasonal home so their two daughters could attend Boise schools while Hank worked on the art that the family would sell each summer. Crandall had no formal architectural education, but his father was a nurseryman, and the deep lot was carefully landscaped with plantings he had purchased expressly for that purpose. The original pond visible in historic photos has since been filled in but subsequent owners have maintained and improved upon the scenic natural surroundings of the house and its original garage.

P

reservation Idaho has worked to preserve Idaho’s historic and cultural resources for 43 years. The Heritage Homes Tour is their signature event and largest annual fundraiser. It is an annual, self-guided tour of one of Boise’s unique neighborhoods; chosen to highlight Boise’s social and economic history and development, as well as satisfy the curiosity we all have as to how other people live in their communities and neighborhoods. As a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, they receive no State or Federal funding and rely solely on members, donations, and grants to support their mission of “preserving Idaho’s historic places through collaboration, education, and advocacy.” The Heritage Homes Tour takes places the first Sunday in October; mark your calendar for October 2nd, 2016!

This year’s event took place in the Kootenai Street Historic Neighborhood. Platted in 1891, the area was first developed into farms and orchards. By the 1950’s the neighborhood had become a suburb for Boise’s growing middle class. The first homes built on Kootenai belonged to farmers, carpenters, and other laborers with property often helping provide an income. Some of the land in this area became Morris Hill Cemetery and Cassia Park. 22

Construction of the Union Pacific Depot in 1925 coincided with road-improvement programs that helped modernize Boise and encouraged travel by automobile. These changes made living outside of the downtown area easier and desirable. Many homes on the Bench were built between 1935 and 1960, when the ideal of home ownership came to represent success and security. The Kootenai Street neighborhood includes Colonial, Classic, Spanish, and English style homes and is enjoyed today because of its architectural character, the expanse of green space around the homes, and because of the large shade trees that line the streets. Subdivision of these large lots is always a temptation to developers and, despite its architectural and historic significance, Kootenai Street has not been listed on the National Register of Historic Places or given the protection afforded by designation as a local historic district. These homes are vulnerable to demolition and non-sympathetic exterior renovations. It is hoped that events like the Heritage Homes Tour will draw attention to the need for this and other neighborhoods to evolve in ways that are both productive and sensitive to their historic and architectural integrity.

“This is an attempt for people who care about the world they live in to create alternatives that are healthier than conventional society,” Nelson said. Cheryl Mendiola, the project’s soil remediation team leader, is also its eco-weaver. She will work with other local farmers and gardeners to integrate their goods into a localized food hub. “It’s about connecting with others growing food in the community for more direct farm-to-table situations,” she says. Sunny says BEP is looking for collaborative relationships as well as interns, investors, and community members willing to get involved.

volving plans are taking root just outside Garden City, where about three acres of leased farmland will be transformed into the Boise EcoVillage Project. It’s one of the first steps for an organization that’s building a much larger vision of a virtually self-contained alternative community based on caring for the Earth, fellow residents, and fair share. Project manager Sunny Freeman-Genz says BEP volunteers tilled 1.75 acres of the site in late April and planted cover crops to give the land a fresh start. Although the current project site is small, organizers hope to grow into another seven acres on the north side of Chinden as the concept catches on. This year, a portion of that land was planted in pumpkins, which sold at an existing produce stand and earned the non-profit about $900 toward its goals. Partnering with the non-profit Growing Change, BEP will plant 500 trees onsite, mostly apple, cherry, pear, and other fruit trees. Vegetable gardens will go in next year with tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, squash and other favorites due to pop up. 24

Lessons learned from a lifelong passion for cycling in general, and plenty of experience with bicycle touring in particular, have helped Fotsch stay focused. “That requires a lot of patience,” he says of bicycle touring. “You don’t get anywhere fast. I have been able to use that mindset, that patience, to see the project through.” His efforts with Boise GreenBike continue the work he has done in the health sector since mid-1999. Before joining Central District Health in early 2005, he held high-profile jobs with the Idaho State University Institute of Emergency Management and American Red Cross of Greater Idaho. Earlier, he worked in various radio and TV jobs in Milwaukee and Boise, where he arrived in 1991 as a graduate assistant through Boise State University Public Radio.

efore spearheading the GreenBike program, Dave Fotsch spent a lot of time behind a radio microphone or in front of a TV camera. When he wasn’t working, he pursued the “get there when we get there” hobby of bicycle touring, producing a patient enthusiasm that helped him to set Boise GreenBike in motion. Boise GreenBike customers unlock, ride, and lock borrowed bikes in the urban area roughly from Expo Idaho east to Harris Ranch. The Valley Regional Transit-run service fields 114 bicycles at 15 stations, 10 of which have kiosks where users can insert a bank card and sign up for membership. If you spend much time downtown you’ve probably seen them, and you may have already experienced the convenience and utility of the program. Inspired after seeing a presentation from bike-friendly Portland, Fotsch contemplated a sharing program for Boise. Analysis by Boise State University planning experts, two $320,000 federal grants secured with help from a CDHD colleague and $64,000 in startup funds from the City of Boise powered the organization’s launch. “This is my dream job,” Fotsch says. 26

Fotsch started as director at the end of September 2013 and immediately faced a big issue: A regional planning organization had pulled and redirected one of the federal grants.

“When I saw this opportunity, I thought, here is something I could bring to Boise and really make a difference in our community,” Fotsch says. “I know bikes are a transformative technology. They improve cities. This is part of my mission.”

With equipment and infrastructure finally in place, GreenBikes officially launched in mid-April of 2015. The initial year of Boise GreenBike operations has gone well overall, Fotsch says. “Good or bad?” I asked. The inspiring story of Joseph Sesay and how he sees America by Joseph Catrine McGregor

I

magine traveling from a small African village to Boise – blind. Joseph Sesay is an 18-year-old Sierra Leonean who is living in Boise for a year with his host, “Uncle Tony” Boatman. Sesay, who has become something of a phenomenon with his Boise High School classmates, is one of 11 children. Four of his siblings died before the age of five and three were born blind, including Joseph.

When Sesay came to Boise, Boatman took him to an eye surgeon, where they received the incredible news that Joseph’s blindness was due to congenital cataracts. In an example of the Boise community’s kindness, a GoFundMe campaign initiated by Boatman and two Boise High School teachers raised the amount Sesay needed for the delicate surgery. I first met Sesay just 15 days after he regained his sight. He is a kind, humble young man whose smile lights up a room. Though one of Sierra Leone’s neighbors, Mali, recently came under attack by ISIS, Sesay’s home country is known for peaceful co-existence between Christians and Muslims. He wears a large cross around his neck as an affirmation of his faith, while embracing the Muslim community as well. “Sierra Leone had a long civil war that ended not too long before I was born. During that time, the Christians and Muslims worked closely together,” Sesay explained. Sierra Leone is a West African country about the size of South 30

Carolina. Its official language is English, though many dialects are spoken there, the most popular being Krio, a form a Pidgin English. The country is the 27th poorest in the world, with an average daily salary of $2.50 USD. My first meeting with Sesay took place at the home of Dr. Jon Bart, one of the founders of Village Hope, which has implemented a number of successful programs in Sierra Leone for the past seven years. Sesay’s assessment of what his country needs is far beyond that of the average high school student. As he listened intently to Dr. Bart’s goal of paying their Sierra Leonean employees a middle class income of $20 per day, Sesay’s response showed an amazing maturity and understanding of his country. “You will need to provide financial counselling as well. By creating such a radical change to the economy, it could easily cause irresponsible spending instead of betterment of the community,” Sesay said. Sesay is one of 8 disabled students who came to the United States through the American Field Service organization. When asked what he first noticed about the U.S., Sesay had a oneword response: “Movement.” He went on to explain that every kind of movement—how people walk, how cars drive, even the pace of life in general—was different than his home. Then, he laughed and shared something else that’s different: “The food.”

Woods has been a licensed cosmetologist for over 12 years, but says she’s been doing glamour for the stage for over 20. necessary to be a member of the faculty or a student to use them. At the moment, the BSU carsharing program is the only one in Boise—although other services are expanding quickly across the nation. In light of this, Boiseans face some challenges if they want to live partially or fully car-free. Most people need a car to get to work. The buses only run until 6:00 and have limited weekend hours, making mass-transit a difficult service to use for some. While the carsharing service offers an affordable alternative, one needs to live or be in close enough proximity to BSU to pick up the cars.

carsharing in boise Moving toward car-free living in the City of Trees by Buffy Naillon

A

ccording to the United Nations Population Fund, almost five billion people will live in the world’s cities and towns by the year 2030. City growth now vastly outpaces suburban and rural growth, which is leading to a new set of challenges. In smaller metro areas like Boise, the numbers are growing at an even faster rate. If anything is likely to put Boise on the fast track for traffic jams, this is it.

Many communities solve these problems by using a split strategy. The first component is the development of mixed-use communities, which allow people to shop, work, and live in the same place, cutting down on commutes. Alternative modes of transportation like carsharing make up the second component. These solutions work in tandem, and together can effectively reduce the stress population rise puts on a community.

cently conducted a study of 9,500 carshare members. Twentyfive percent of the people who took part in the study said that they got rid of a car or decided not to buy one as a direct result of carsharing programs. This led researchers to conclude that “one carsharing vehicle replaces 9 to 13 vehicles among carsharing members because their vehicles were sold or they postponed purchasing vehicles.” For those unfamiliar with carsharing, it’s a kind of short-term car rental. Carshare members usually rent the cars for a couple of hours. Boise State has a program through Enterprise, and Enterprise’s program is one of many that exist worldwide. A more popular service with millennials, and one you may have heard of in the news is Zipcar. While the specifics of each service vary, the basic idea is the same.

“We see carshare as a complement and as an extension to mass transit or those other forms of sharing programs like bikeshare, for instance,” said Enterprise spokesperson Greg Phillips.

At Boise State, carshare members rent the cars online, then pick them up at their designated spots on campus. Users swipe their Enterprise-issued membership card across an electronic box on the windshield to get into the car, with the keys waiting inside. Gas and insurance are included in the rental price.

And carsharing is an effective means of reducing the number of cars on the road. Dr. Susan Shaheen, Co-Director at the Transportation Sustainability Research Center at Berkeley, re-

Currently, it costs around $8.00 per hour during the week to rent one of these cars at BSU, with weekends costing a bit more. Although the cars are parked at the university, it isn’t

Despite the challenges, it’s still possible to embrace carsharing in Boise, starting with the people who are already near BSU on a regular basis. Some use the cars during their lunch breaks as a quick and convenient way to run errands. Students and faculty, who are on campus for long stretches of time, can use the cars for almost everything they might need, and so far it’s proving to be a popular idea.

As carsharing catches on, Boise may expand to become like other communities that embrace the concept. Carsharing spots in other cities are placed throughout the community and often include memberships not only to carsharing, but bikesharing as well as the mass-transit system. With the combination of various alternative forms of transportation, including the innovative carsharing program, Boise and other metropolitan areas may continue to expand safely and without frustrating traffic jams.

His beliefs on staying local are monumental and moving in ways that really shift perspectives to focus more on our Idaho economy. When asked his thoughts, he responded with heartfelt conviction, “It’s important to understand the repercussions of outside buying.” As tried-and-true Idahoans, we are supported by our state - Idaho provides jobs, education, food, entertainment, our homes, and countless

While we don’t have to stave off entirely and never buy anything from an outsidechain again, we do need to thoroughly understand the benefit of purchasing locally produced and locally sourced goods. Whether it be for a new pair of gloves for this glacial winter or a backpacking tent for your trip to the Sawtooths, shopping at Benchmark is a great way to share your support for local business and the Idaho economy. The word ‘benchmark’ means a starting point, a point of reference for all other measures, which is perfect for Hutton’s idea behind the store. After moving to Boise and opening Benchmark, Hutton began to see the value and importance behind being a locally owned store that gives back to the community. eith Tracy and his wife, Kelly, are self-described “candle nerds.” But the success of their BeefWhip Candle Company may owe more to the “after work” efforts they’ve put in for years as they’ve balanced busy jobs with their business dream. “Guys enjoy candles, too,” Kelly said, adding she has seen sales “all over the board” demographically as she focuses on marketing, event participation and social media.

f you’re taking a winter walk downtown, be mindful not to miss Mixed Greens on 9th Street between Idaho and Bannock. Chris and Molly feel that this experience is far from unusual in Boise. “We would like to encourage everyone to get out and walk somewhere new, and they’ll be sure to find something they didn’t know was there before,” Chris said.

Owners Molly and Chris Gray met each other at Fairmont Junior High, spent some time in Seattle, and returned to Boise to get back to their roots and the friendly faces of Idaho. Mixed Greens came from their passion to share locally handcrafted gifts. The store opened its doors to Boise three years ago, and their original love for these unique and handcrafted gifts has only grown.

Mixed Greens started as a place to show and sell the items made by Molly, including bath and body products, jewelry, and hand-made cards, and has evolved into a store that showcases a variety of handcrafted items from local artists and artisans. Before opening the store, Molly sold her products at the Saturday Market and Indie Made, as well as wholesale to stores like Whole Foods. Chris was an accountant and IT specialist before they two decided to go “all in” on Mixed Greens—a decision they don’t regret.

Boise is growing exponentially, and as business owners, Chris and Molly can really feel the expansion. Their customer base has grown with Boise, bringing new customers who become fans. Many of the people who stop in to Mixed Greens simply changed up their normal routine and walked down a different 40

Gasaway is passionate about her family and her faith. “I am a huge fan of Jesus. I love studying scripture and I pray and meditate on scripture daily. Jesus is my anchor in this stormy life and it’s my faith in Him that gives me the help, strength, courage and wisdom to continue to run my business and take care of my marriage and family.”

Gasaway is inspired by “strong men and women who live by their convictions and persevere. Naghmeh Abedini is a Christian wife and mother who lives here in Boise and whose husband has been imprisoned in Iran for his Christian faith. She continues to trust in God and share her faith despite her present circumstances. That is the type of woman I hope to be.”

Feel like a million at Urban Exchange

HAPP Y NEW Y EAR!

he Discovery Center of Idaho will be holding its 1st Annual Toy Expo on Friday November 27th and Saturday November 28th during the normal Discovery Center hours 9:30 A.M. until 5 P.M. No admission is required to attend the Expo, which will be held at the Discovery Center. Veronica Gasaway, owner/operator of Urban Exchange has lived in Boise since 1994 and been in business since 2009. Founded on the back porch of her West Boise home, Urban Exchange is a locally owned and family operated small business with large goals. “Our ultimate goal at Urban Exchange is to impact every person who visits our place of business in such a manner that their life is better having visited us,” says Gasaway. “I know that’s a tall order for a simple consignment store, but seeing the joy or relief on peoples faces when they come in for something specific and find exactly what they need for a fraction of what they expected to spend is so fulfilling. Sometimes it’s a piece of clothing, other times it’s a simple prayer or even a shoulder to cry on. We are so much more than a consignment store. We exist to offer excellent customer service, quality products and a warm, inviting space for our community to visit in order to look and feel like a million bucks without spending a million bucks.” 42

“Urban Exchange is a high end consignment store for men and women,” shares Gasaway. “We provide a boutique atmosphere without the attitude or outrageous prices. Just high quality clothing, warm, inviting personalities and a fun and peaceful atmosphere. Plus our selection and prices can’t be beat!” Gasaway advises others interested in starting a business to “Go with your gut. We had several professionals and business consultants tell us our business was not going to work. Because of my entrepreneurial spirit, we chose not to listen and went ahead with the dream. I think the most important things to consider are whether you are passionate and whether you will have enough resources financially to see you through the first several years of growing pains. Take the time to do the research necessary for the field or industry you’re interested in. Commit and persevere. Learn to enjoy the process.” “We had a lot of people try to discourage us,” recalls Gasaway. “A few weeks after opening the doors, a lovely older woman handed me a card. She said she walked in the area weekly and noticed my new business and just wanted to come in and say hello. It was a beautiful inspirational card with scripture. I still have it to this day.”
