We heART Summer Local Boise Artists BY VERONICA LEMASTER

Suzanne Lee Chetwood—a local artist from Pennsylvania who specializes in Idaho landscape paintings. Growing up in a sheltered forest in Pennsylvania, she remembers observing colors in the sunset before learning how to read. Chetwood’s work focuses on healing practices, such as color therapy and physical and mental healing, due to her suffering from chronic pain since she was 12. “Everything I put into my work is filled with great energy and good intentions,” Chetwood said.

Being diagnosed with a life changing illness has shifted the lens of Chetwood’s work to be Earth driven and featuring “cut-outs” that represent another dimension, or the road not taken for each personal story of healing. She was recently notified by St Alphonsus regional medical center that her style of art has been proven by scientists to heal chronic pain. Chetwood is a member of Swell Artist collective with a local gallery representation at Finer Frames Gallery in Eagle. She is currently focusing on gallery work and private commissions. You can paint with her at Paint N’ Sip, where she brings her fun teaching style and bubbly personality to each private party. See her work shine at Evermore Prints in Boise the month of July. Join her for the closing reception the Last Thursday of July! On July 26th, from 5-9pm, you can meet Chetwood and see her latest work which she describes as opening up about her personal struggle with autoimmune diseases and Lyme disease. Wine tasting hosted by Indian Creek Winery and Americana live music by Andy Porter. To learn more about what everything Chetwood has done, or upcoming events, visit her website at suzanneleechetwood.com. (208) 433-0220 14

Fire Fusion Studio—Fire Fusion Studio specializes in metal and glass

enamel fabrication, a new concept to Boise. Owner Delia Dante works with copper and steel, emblazoned with beautiful enamel colors to create sculptures, wall pieces, and jewelry. She also specializes in commission work—you may have seen Dante’s fourteen-foot sculpture “Me Deuce” at Barbacoa. Fire Fusion Studio shares studio space with Boise Art Glass at their downtown location, as the owners are business partners. Dante was a teacher for 12 years and taught art classes at a junior high in Boise. She has also been a professional enamel artist since 2004, which is why she decided to teach the skill. “I had the desire to teach people my passion, and my passion is enameling and welding, and pretty much nobody knows about enameling, they don’t even know what it is!” she said. With that, she decided to make a change. “I wanted my medium to flourish and grow, and I also wanted people to enjoy it, and I know the only way to get people to learn about it was to have a place public to teach it and share it,” she said. Alongside getting people to learn about enameling, Dante has a mission of empowering women in using tools, welding, and art. “We have this life to help others,” Dante added. Fire Fusion Studio offers custom fabrication and custom orders along with a full retail gallery to choose from. Although it’s a new business, Dante has seen nothing but positive feedback and has taught nearly 4,000 people enameling. Learn more about enameling, welding and Fire Fusion Studio at firefusion-studio.com, and call (208) 345-1825 to book a class! 1124 W. Front St. in downtown Boise (208) 345-1825 15 15

Boise Art Glass—Interested in glass blowing? Then Boise Art Glass is the place for you! Art Glass provides classes such as torch and flameworking, and a furnace and hotshop class that anyone above the age of 8 can participate in. In 2003, owner Filip Vogelpohl opened Boise Art Glass to spread the word on art blowing and teach his skills to the community. “A great portion of what we do here is to expose anyone and everyone who’s interested about glass blowing,” said Vogelpohl. His interest in glass sparked when he was exposed to glass blowing in Eugene, Oregon. He decided to try it out and became hooked. “The first year was strictly self-taught, where I would basically melt glass,” he said. “Then I would take seminars and classes to learn more but had to travel because nothing like that existed in Boise.” After doing that for a period of time, Vogelpohl decided to bring glass blowing to Boise. As the city grows, he hopes the business will grow with it, and aspires to see more people interested in glass blowing. “We really appreciate the community and how it’s supported this business,” he added. Boise Art Glass also specializes in commission work, which includes lighting for residential and commercial places. For instance, the gorgeous chandelier at Barbacoa Grill was done by Vogelpohl, along with the Inn at 500 lighting fixtures. They also do wholesale and ship to 48 different gift shops in the United States. Join them in one of their many classes and hand-make and item of your own! To sign up for a class or shop retail, visit boiseartglass.com. 1124 W Front St. in downtown Boise (208) 345-1825 16

Gallery 601—Looking for one-of-a-kind art to hang in your home? Look no further! Gallery 601 has been the go-to shop for everything art related. They also sell handcrafted jewelry and offer a ‘private shopping hour’ that’s designed for that one-on-one personal experience. Boise is brimming with unique talents and individuals that often slip by undetected right under our noses. You can find Urie Layser doing his best to trace back to his childhood roots by throwing daring stunts off of local bridges and cliffs, and now, his motorcycle. For those meandering city streets, Sara Geiger can be found rhythmically picking strings on her banjo as she busks all over Downtown Boise. Meanwhile, Adam Chavarria can be found rocking out at any number of local bars, restaurants and music venues all over the Treasure Valley about 26 nights out of the month. Sector Seventeen aerosol artist Hawk Sahlein is bringing city buildings and infrastructure to life through dazzling murals. Landscape photographer Sage Bielenberg can be found perusing the foothills daily in pursuit of the perfect sunset—that is, when he’s not taking his show on the road to Stanley, McCall and other scenic destinations littered throughout the region. Collectively, these and other “everyday” Treasure Valley residents help make Boise not just a desirable city to live in, but a home for talents of all varieties.

Urie Layser - Casual Daredevil “I lived in Montana and there was this bridge. I pretty much always wanted to be like my buddy Micah, who was just like this crazy kid. When I started out, I would do whatever Micah would do. He back flipped off a bridge, then I backflipped off of it. I didn’t realize how many times I’ve hucked off of stupid, random stuff until this moment, actually. It’s gotten to the point where it’s been so many years and so many things and so many times that it’s become muscle memory. Really, when it comes down to it, it’s just me just still trying to be dumb like when I was younger—but still safe. I have a few other tricks in my bag of flips, but the backflip is always kind of the go-to. The way you can kind of layout a backflip and the whole sense of slowly being able to throw it around rotation wise has always been my style.”

Sara Geiger - Busking Banjo Player “Both of my parents are musicians, so music has always been in my family. One day I asked my mom for a banjo for Christmas and, lo and behold, she got me a banjo. It’s been like a stress-release…I just kind of get lost in it. I’m not the best banjo player in all of Boise and I don’t care to be. I don’t need to be rich and famous—it’s a hobby. I like to stay modest because I still have that stage fright in me. I don’t want to make a big scene, I just want to be the weird girl playing banjo in the corner. Each dollar that I get, I feel like I play a little bit better, a little bit louder, a little bit more confident. It’s the most rewarding feeling to have multiple people approach you—strangers approach you—and compliment you on what you’re doing. It puts you in a good mood.”

SARA

Hawk Sahlein - Sector Seventeen Aerosol Artist “Through graffiti and skateboarding I got into painting and then from there progressed into painting more imagery versus just graffiti lettering. Right around that time Freak Alley was starting and after a while I started doing some pieces down there with Collin [Sector Seventeen partner] and our late friend Jeff. When I’m painting and getting in the zone, listening to music, it’s something that I don’t feel could be replaced by many other things in my life. I look at it as an escape and a place to go to focus on one thing in front of me. When I’m painting for myself or coming up with ideas for projects I’m interested in, it still has that spark that helps me feel my imagination working. It’s a cool place to be. I wouldn’t have gotten this far if Boise hadn’t helped me along the way as a community, finding a place for this kind of art and my style and I’m thankful for that.”

HAWK ADDAM

Addam Chavarria - Solo Guitar Player and Singer “Growing up we had a keyboard and I taught myself to play by ear. I wanted to play guitar so bad, but I never had a guitar until I was about 16. We got it at a pawn shop for like 30 bucks and I learned how to play that night. My first show I played was at The Reef and that’s where I met most of the people I do shows through now. This is the second year I’ve been able to do it full-time and I’m 24 now. I don’t know, it’s just something I want to do for the rest of my life. I want to put it all in and learn as much as I can because I’m living and breathing music. That’s my life now. Some people see my profession as a dream that is hard to reach or almost impossible. By me succeeding, I’m inspiring others to reach for their dreams.” ¢ 19 19

FAMILY DAY! There’s no better place than Boise to spend a day with the family BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS

20

PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER

R

enowned poet, George Santayana said it best, “Family is one of nature’s masterpieces.” Family is absolutely fundamental—whether it’s your birth family, adopted family, or a family of close-knit friends, we need to foster these familial connections in order to fully progress through life. And what better way to get close to family than to spend the day on a bike, eating ice cream, and playing in the sun? Bicycling is a complete stress-reducer. And St. Luke’s quickly realized, that while Boise loves its bikes, not everyone had the luxury of owning their own bike. Or bike racks for that matter. Being the benchmark for health and wellness in the city, they decided to make a change and sponsor an upcoming company—Boise GreenBike. Boise GreenBike teamed up with Valley Regional Transit and Social Bicycles to develop a more user-friendly way to bike with the fam: rentals! And St. Lukes was more than happy to be a part of the GreenBike movement, hence the St. Lukes logo across all of the bikes. Aside from the obvious and incredible health benefits, they sought to reduce air pollution and vehicle emissions by offering an alternative mode of transportation. Any effort helps and with the partnership between St. Lukes and Boise GreenBike, Boise can say that we truly are trying to make a difference with carbon emission. So, grab your family, grab a GreenBike, and head outside for a day of fun, bonding, and exercise! Boise GreenBike There are GreenBike hubs all over the city. In fact, their website www. Boise.GreenBike.com has a convenient map that lists each of their hubs and whether there are bikes available for renting. At an affordable rate and dozens of convenient locations, there’s almost no excuse not to get out and get some exercise with the family! Their mobile app makes renting quick and hassle-free.

21

LIBRARY! AT BOWN CROSSING

Outside of the bustle of downtown, there is a Boise GreenBike hub at the library at Bown Crossing. A perfect stop on your family journey. There are books for every age group and a family that reads together, grows together. After you’ve had your fill, hop on a GreenBike and hit the road!

RANCH MARKET – WARM SPRINGS

It’s summer, it’s hot. The kids are hot, you’re hot— you need some ice cream. And barely two miles down the road, a quick jaunt on a bike, is the Ranch Market. Ranch Market is so much more than your typical convenience store. They have more healthy snacks and drinks than any convenience store I’ve ever seen. And not to mention, the really important part… they have so much ice cream. So much. Ben and Jerry’s, big pints, small pints, cookies and cream, strawberry, buttercup, the list goes on and on. And of course, outside they have a snow-cone shack and hand-scooped Tillamook ice cream.

JULIA DAVIS PARK

Cruising back down toward Boise, there are so many stops and sights to see. From Barber Park with its grassy expanses and sandy-snack-shacks to the Military Reserve with their elaborate trails and beautiful views to Julia Davis, and there’s never a shortage of things to see there. Zoo Boise. Whether you stop in or just ride by to see the heads of the giraffes, the Zoo is always a good option for a family day. Plus it’s butterfly exhibit season! Rose Garden. Stop and smell the roses, literally. Boise Art Museum. A cheap, fun way to educate and experience with the family. New art installations happen all the time, so it’s always new and exciting. Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial. This beautiful memorial captures the importance of history and human rights. Paddleboats. Take a break from the ride and hop in a paddleboat. And of course, Julia Davis is the perfect place to relax in the shade and watch the clouds go by. With several picnic areas and chill spots to listen to the river, Julia Davis Park is a must-stop on our family day ride.

DISCOVERY CENTER OF IDAHO

And why not discover a thing or two while you’re out and about with the family? From the iconic giant

bubble wall to their rotating exhibits, the Discovery Center is always a good place to stop in and check out.

IDAHO STATE CAPITOL BUILDING

When was the last time you went inside the capitol? Rich in Idaho history, there’s so much to learn, and the astounding architecture is guaranteed to make everyone stop in awe. Did you know that dome reaches 208 feet into the skyline? Take a capitol tour and explore a building that’s over 100 years old!

EVEN STEVENS SANDWICHES

By this time, the ice cream has probably worn off and it’s about time for another meal. Stop in to Even Stevens for family-friend food for all ages that helps support a good cause. Plus, it’s nestled in the heart of Freak Alley, another great stop on our family day tour. And then you can drop the bikes off at any one of the Boise GreenBike hubs. While this list may not encompass all of the incredible things you can find on a day trip through Boise, it’s a good and lengthy start to spending time with the family. It’s important to set aside days where you bond with family, friends, and loved ones. Our community is a strong network of close relationships, and as the city grows, we need to continue to foster those relationships. ¢

THERE’S SO MUCH HISTORY, BEAUTY, AND CULTURE IN OUR BEAUTIFUL CITY. SO, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? GRAB THE FAM, GRAB A GREENBIKE, AND HIT THE GREENBELT. 22

INSTAGRAM SENSATION Mossy the Squirrel BY JANELLE STEAR PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER

Meet Mossy the Squirrel A year ago, Tiara and her husband were relaxing on a cool spring evening eating dinner when they heard a loud, persistent cry. They found an abandoned, three-week-old baby squirrel, injured and clinging fiercely to the bark of tree, with a harsh sprinkler spraying her. They took the squirrel home, cared for her, and expected to release her. Why keep a squirrel? Tiara says “Mossy” is her name because she 24

had been clutching to the bark like a small patch of moss. Tiara explains how Mossy will never survive in the wild. The trauma Mossy had suffered left her with an injured spine and a spiral tail. Tiara’s family chiropractor has been treating Mossy so now her spine is better, but she still has the spiral tail that affects her balance and tail mobility. You would not know this watching Mossy as she jumps around the house, with a zesty, energetic, playful manner. Mossy even pries open tin lids to find her treasured nuts then hides them in different places

around the house, even in Tiara’s hair. She especially likes to bark at the family cat lounging out the window. Tiara says, “I never thought I’d have a pet squirrel… I have rescued other animals, but always released them. Mossy just is special and needs us.” A Squirrel’s Value Tiara wants you to know: squirrels are creatures that need a place to live just like humans. They almost never carry rabies, and are in

SPIN fact, cleaner than most household pets. In the fall, we rake up the materials that the squirrels need to stay warm and nourished in winter; they hide their food to be able to survive during the cold. If, instead, we left some of the leaves by trees, then we would be helping to protect their natural habitats. And, if we would put out food for them, then they would be less likely to eat our plants. Tiara informs, “Squirrels use the entire tree for their survival, nourishment, and protection all year. They are intelligent and beautiful animals that want to coexist with us. They deserve a chance at life too. Let’s be kind to squirrels in Boise.” Mossy: Internet Sensation Mossy is bringing happiness around the world via her Instagram page. Some followers have shared that they suffer from ailments that affect their quality of life, but that they look forward each day to seeing Mossy’s posts because it uplifts their spirits. One follower sent Mossy

a hand-crocheted hanging nest from Germany to sleep in; another in California sent date palm seeds. Tiara has been “overwhelmed” and “touched” at the output of support for Mossy. Tiara wants to continue to share Mossy’s kindness and love with others. “Mossy brings a joy to my life… Her companionship, her quirkiness, and the fact that she’s chosen to trust me is a privilege that I feel honored to have,” Tiara enlightens. “I share her life with others via her Instagram and around town because I don’t want to keep that kind of joy to myself. She has the potential to uplift and inspire people and I think that’s worth sharing.” ¢

ARE YOU LAUGHING AT MY ART? Fine art humorist, Jeff Leedy SELF-SUBMISSION PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER

This is an artist who comes to make you laugh. Wait a minute. This is ART! I’m not supposed to laugh, am I? Yes, you are! This is the work of Jeff Leedy, nationally known fine art humorist. Whether you crack up at “Counsel Approaching the Bench” or “Dogus Interruptus,” you’ll find yourself in a lighter, happier mood. Jeff Leedy’s art just makes people happy. One customer quipped, “ I laughed so hard, I forgot I was an attorney.” After graduating from Syracuse University, just after the Spanish American War, Leedy began a long career in advertising after being told, “Advertising would be the most fun you could have with your clothes on.” Several big New York ad agencies including Y&R used his talents until he braved his way to San Francisco in 1974 where he won a Clio, the “Oscar” of advertising. After that, he white-knuckled as a freelance humorous illustrator and did so for eight years with top national clients like IBM and Qantas. Then, he hit a wall and needed a big change. 26

“I felt I needed to do my own creations, my own art.” But that meant doing the art and then (gulp) finding out if anyone wanted it. In other words, be a starving fine artist.

Two turning points happened simultaneously in 1989. First, Leedy entered—and won—a gold medal in the NY Society of Illustrators (a very conservative bunch) first Humor Show, beating out 3500 international entries. And second, his new oil pastel style was accepted into the Sausalito Art Festival, the #1 outdoor show in the country, (where he has now exhibited for 18 years). The horse was out of the barn and the word got around. His originals, reproductions and commissions are a colorful delight to his customers. Former owner of two waterfront galleries, Art that Makes You Laugh, in Sausalito and Mendocino, for ten years and exhibitor at hundreds of outdoor art shows around the country, Leedy estimates he has sold over 350,000 of his prints and originals. Currently, his work is being licensed onto magnets, mugs, calendars, and more as he creates new works in his Garden City studio. Leedy also has several wholesale accounts who carry his reproductions. His humor gallery concept, Art That Makes You Laugh® is available as a franchise to those who desire to own a great humor gallery, a gallery that makes people happy. Leedy gives utmost thanks to his wife and partner, Elaine, who keeps the boat afloat and is a fine art pastelist in her own right. Now in Boise, his passion and humor are directed towards humorous 2-minute video blogs he calls The Funday Sunnies©. Jeff feels it is his mission to share and spread the humor that he was given by God. And lucky for us Art That Makes You Laugh® does just that. ¢ www.artthatmakesyoulaugh.com

PET PORTRAITS BY PETE

The subtle transition from tragedy to triumph BY URIE L. LAYSER PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER

It’s a beautiful Sunday afternoon as we find ourselves sitting on the patio of Even Stevens sandwich shop in downtown Boise. As he begins to recall the events that brought him to this stage in his life, Peter Burns brandishes to me his outstretched left hand and the four and a half fingers that remain. “It was a turning point,” he says. “My life really could have went either way.” It all began in March 2015 when Pete was coming out of a significantly low-point in his existence. Having just secured a landmark job as an editor for the Dan Patrick Show and about to celebrate 90 days of alcohol sobriety, he was beginning to make strides in both his life and career—the only thing standing in his way were a few hundred hours of community service at a local animal shelter in Chatsworth,

28

California. Upon arriving for his first day at the shelter, Pete was informed by management the first task-at-hand would be to clean out occupied dog kennels using a hose. It was supposed to be a relatively straight forward operation, but fifteen minutes into his first shift, Pete’s hand was attacked by a previously abused and scared dog. After two days in the hospital and a failed attempt at reattaching his finger, Peter found himself at a crossroad in his attempts to move forward and escape the clutch of alcoholism. The pain of losing part of his finger was amplified by the fact that the dog responsible was sentenced to euthanasia for its aggression. Unable to work, Pete was devastated, frustrated, and was considering going back to the very habit that brought him to this place. Luckily, at

that moment in walked his sister, Karin, whom he hadn’t seen in almost a year. “Things are going up and then all of a sudden you hit a huge bump in the road,” recalls Pete. “You can either continue to go up, or go back to whatever it was you were doing that caused you to go down that that path in the first place.” With that thought and the support of his family, Peter decided to relocate to the Treasure Valley where he spent the next few months convalescing at his sister’s house. While on the mend, Pete channeled his frustration into a forgotten hobby—drawing. He began sketching pet portraits for family and friends while donating the proceeds to the ASPCA, a national organization that works to combat animal cruelty. What began as only a hobby, turned into an outlet. He found that through his art, he could make a positive impact and hopefully prevent more innocent animals from encountering a similar fate. In January 2016, Pet Portraits by Pete officially launched and it didn’t take long for the artist to attract attention on a national stage. In June of that year, Peter and his sister were invited to share their story on the Today show with Kathie Lee and Hoda. After his appearance, his email began to flood with drawing requests from people all around the US; including many celebrities such as Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and even the Dog Whisperer himself, Cesar Millan. His palette of bright neon colors represents the antithesis of the darkness that brought him to this point. It’s full of hope and truly captures the innocence of our favorite friends. Boasting nearly forty years of marriage, that impressive dedication and determination can be seen in the way that they operate their business and how they treat their customers.

MEET THE MENTORS: PATRICK LAWLESS BY NORRIS KRUEGER, PHD PHOTOGRAPH KIMBERLEE MILLER

One doesn’t really meet Pat Lawless, all of a sudden you notice he’s there, helping out and offering good ideas and amping the positive vibe. Who is this guy? Some people see whether a tech works, some understand whether there’s demand, but Pat adds the rarer skill of seeing if there’s actually a business. That’s a gift. What I love about Pat is that he’s always around to help. When you want to start something, he’s there, often without being asked. Doesn’t suffer fools yet relentlessly optimistic. My kind of guy! His advice to me has always been spot on. Well worth getting to know! What makes a good mentor? A bad mentor? “I was most effective when the client and I were matched via a formal support organization and for specific expertise. I mentored formally with the Irish Enterprise Ireland (EI), responsible for developing and growing Irish enterprises globally with a formalized process for matching and supporting mentors who get specialized training and extensive resources. EI’s program provides good guidance and shares ideas and best practices. Why not here?” 32

What should I know/ask/do to see if a mentor is good for me? “Successful entrepreneurs understand the areas where they need supplemental support and surround themselves with experts in those areas. If you are not strong with raising funding or sales or manufacturing processes etc., look for experts in those areas. Ask them how they can help support your quest.” What do mentees really need to know (and do)? “Entrepreneurs need to understand their weaknesses. Don’t be afraid to discuss these needs. First time entrepreneurs should do their homework. Really do their homework.” How do grow good mentoring in Boise/Idaho? “The Enterprise Ireland model is a good starting point. If we can recruit and train mentors the match them to the right situations, we’ll save some aggravation and heartache. If all we do is screen out the selfish mentors, we’re ahead of the game. For too many it’s more ego and being seen as A Great Mentor.” What is one thing that each of us can do to grow the entrepreneur ecosystem? “Boise has no shortage of entrepreneurial

focused groups who have formed or opened chapters here. Why don’t these organizations do a better job of joining forces to share what works? We all share similar reasons for furthering ideas and shaping innovation. We’d be well served to share our best and brightest instead of trying to just better our own organizations.” I believe it is incumbent upon all stakeholders to surround ourselves with likeminded entrepreneurs and constantly share ideas and best practices. What would YOU like to do & how can we help you? I am very interested in working with all entrepreneur support groups to figure out how we can better formalize our offerings and share ideas and practices across those organizations. No group has all of the best ideas and members… If we all work more closely, we will better serve the entrepreneur and the support community. ¢ Patrick Lawless: phlawless@gmail.com.

EXPLORING BASQUE CULTURE Boise Basque Museum BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS PHOTOGRAPH KIMBERLEE MILLER

Annie Gavica grew up in northern Nevada as a third generation Basque where she learned early on the importance of keeping their culture alive. And that’s precisely what she does every day as the Director of the Basque Museum, a title she earned in 2016. Living in a highly concentrated Basque area gave Annie many opportunities to explore her culture. She spent a lot of her time pursuing traditional dance with the Oinkari dancers, which allowed her to visit the Basque country twice. After moving to Idaho, she attended Boise State, just around the time they began offering the Basque Cultural Studies minor, and she, of course, jumped at the chance to learn more about her culture. Annie enjoyed the time she spent teaching at the Boiseko Ikastola, a Basque preschool, but when an education position opened up at the museum, it seemed like the right move, and it absolutely was. “I am very lucky in that I am able to spend my days helping to preserve, promote, and perpetuate Basque history and culture to the local community, visitors and, beyond,” says Annie. History of the Basque People What is called the Basque Country is, in fact, not a country at all, but rather it is a sizeable plot of land that straddles the border of France and Spain. Their language is the oldest Endo-European language still spoken and is unlike any other on Earth, making it both challenging to learn and captivating to understand. After a series of wars, many of the Basque people immigrated to other coun-

tries, hoping to earn money that they could send back to their families, and like thousands of people before and after them, they found a haven in Idaho. And while Idaho doesn’t have the highest population of Basque, we do have the highest concentration per capita. Many of those who came to Idaho never left and are now firmly rooted in our history and politics. The Museum “The Basque Museum not only tells the story of my Basque family, and many other Basque

families and their immigration to the United States, but also the broader immigration story to the US and the many impacts the various cultures have had on America over time,” says Annie. There are several consistent and rotating displays in the museum that depict the history of the Basque country. From old photos to life-size renditions of sheep-herder carts, the museum is chock-full of beautiful stories and historical depictions. It is also conveniently nestled next to some delicious Basque restaurants, like Leku Ona and Bar Gernika. Events There are so many upcoming events to look forward to this year, such as the Running of the Bars fundraiser on July 7 and the Basque Festival July 27 and 28. Music from Basque performers will also be featured, and we personally cannot wait to see Xabi Aburruzaga, master of the Trikitixa, an incredible diatonic accordion. It’s amazing to see a culture so alive and thriving as well as the Basque. It’s imperative that we spend time celebrating all cultures and expanding our perspectives (and our palates!). Take a day trip to the Basque Museum, learn about both Basque and Idaho history and how they have grown to support one another throughout the decades. ¢ www.basquemuseum.eus

JAMES CASTLE HOUSE Artist Legacy and Historical Significance BY KAYLI CORBIN PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER

Art is something we can all relate to. It is a tool for us to share our experience and elicit understanding in others. The James Castle House is a way for our community to experience the unique life of James Castle, learn about our history, and reflect on the ways we interact with the world around us. Castle’s wonder and observation are found in every corner of this house. James Castle was born in Garden Valley in 1899. Being one of seven children and born deaf allowed him to be excused from many household chores. Although he attended the Gooding School for the Deaf and Blind, he never learned proficient use of language. After five years of attendance, he left school and his 34

FLOW family moved to farmland near Star. In 1931 James and his mother moved to the still-standing James Castle House. The spirit of agriculture is strong throughout Castle’s body of work and in the community surrounding the house. Signs for farm fresh eggs and fresh local honey adorn Castle Street as you approach the house, reminding you of the standing importance farming has had through the decades and in Castle’s works. When speaking with Rachel Reichert, Cultural Sites Manager with Boise City Department of Arts & History, she explained that “We get to be the conduit of that spirit.” A presence that is so thoroughly weaved in all the creations of James Castle. Castle’s mediums were things found in his environment and his muses were all things observational. A standing exhibit, The Material Life of James Castle, showcases items that have never been on display before. Many of them found at Castle’s Boise home during its restoration. Bits of art covered by years of renovation, a variety of tools used in creation, and pieces of inspiration Castle found in his everyday life shed light into his creative process and self-expression. The James Castle House offers residencies for creatives of all means to immerse themselves in the home and life of James Castle. Offering 3-month summer and winter residencies allows artists an extended stay and the ability to create a comprehensive body of work during their time in the house. Residencies are offered to anyone living in the United States. Kristen Hill, the Cultural Sites Program Coordinator, leads the Artist-in-Residence programs and is excited to facilitate an open studio every Saturday from 1-3 PM in June and July, showcasing the current artist-in-residence. Shorter residencies are also available for those looking for less of a commitment. A tour of the James Castle House is necessary to understand the details of Castle’s life and his body of work. An informative, humbling, and reflective experience is provided as you explore one of the areas that influenced this amazing artist. The James Castle House is open Thursday – Saturday from 11 AM – 6 PM. Visit https://jamescastlehouse.org for scheduling details and an incredibly in-depth summary of the house and Castle himself. Keep an eye out for upcoming events and make the time to visit the James Castle House, you won’t regret it. ¢ 35

BELLA MAE Authenticity Through Creative Expression BY KAYLI CORBIN PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER

A fourth-grade girl longingly thinks of a boy. Wondering what her first kiss will be like, what love feels like, and if these thoughts are shared by this boy. He had caught the attention of Bella Mae, who was only 10 at the time. She mistakenly confided in her younger brother and was devastated when he told Matthew of her curiosities! This ten-year-old girl sat in a tree in her front yard, having just tasted the pain of heartbreak that we all have experienced countless times. In this moment, a singer/songwriter was born. Bella Mae’s first song, 7 days, came to life, allowing her to express her emotions at a very young age. This creative drive continued through her middle school years and into today. She recalls nights when she would wake from sleep, filled with lyrics or rhythms and knew she needed to get them out. She explained that music drained every anger, fear, or sadness within her and allowed her to put

those emotions to work. Something we can all relate to, and a staple of Bella Mae’s creation process. Being in Bella Mae’s presence highlights her humble nature and dedication to music. Her vibe would lead you to believe she’s had many more than 16 rotations around the sun. She emphasized the most important part of what she does in a simple and concise way, “everything I do is based around love.” Her style spans many genres, including indie, R&B, soul, pop, rap, and singer/songwriter. This diversity lends incredibly well to love songs. She can’t help but to write about it and all the associated emotions it can elicit.

She shares her love with advice for the younger generation saying, “People can say whatever they want…in reality, they cannot tell you your art is not art.” That creative expression and spirited approach to creation has allowed Bella Mae to hit over 150,000 views on Spotify in 30 days. Her music speaks to people. Her raw and authentic emotion allows for connection and understanding. Bella Mae balances an incredibly busy schedule and works tirelessly to reach her goal of creating music to be received by international audiences. She says, “loose sleep now, so you can sleep easy later,” and truly exemplifies that philosophy. She goes to school full time, is in the process of releasing her debut album, models, and manages to maintain a personal life. We are eager to see Bella Mae’s progression and to listen to her debut album, which is sure to be as personable, raw, and genuine as she is. She says “My upcoming album can easily be described as a silver platter with all my feelings, love stories, tragedies, and heartbreaks on it. The album is me, my heart, and is as real as it gets. Expect vulnerability and authenticity. That is what you’re going to get.” Follow her journey on Snapchat (@thebellamae), Twitter (@imbellamae), Instagram (@ theofficialbellamae), and be SURE to keep an eye out for her debut album coming soon! We’re confident that we’ll be seeing more of Bella Mae and will continue to be graced with her creative expression. ¢ For bookings, please contact Tina at Tatum Productions at tina@tmtvtalent.com.

IN HER ELEMENT  A local artist finds inspiration in the natural beauty of the Gem State BY RYON MORRIN

PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER

Jennie Kilcup is an incredible Idaho watercolor artist. You can see her captivating paintings in shops everywhere from Sun Valley to Boise. Homeschooled as a child, she spent a majority of her time outside in the wilderness of Ketchum, Idaho. From a very young age she had an observable gift for all things artistic; 38

creations on paper of various subjects served as evidence of her natural abilities. Kilcup’s mother enrolled her in extracurricular courses to supplement her home-based education. At the age of 8, she began watercolor painting under the guidance of a locally-renowned instructor. From the start, her teacher

recognized the skill she has with a paintbrush in hand. As a result, she was immediately placed into the adult-level class while simultaneously attending with similarly-aged peers. Kilcup continued painting until the age of twelve, when her teacher made the switch to a public school. She admits that she felt slightly jilted after she left. She stopped painting because she felt like she was treated unfairly, picking up brushes only occasionally as well as during elective college courses. After earning her degree in Northern Idaho, Kilcup and her husband made the move to Boise to take advantage of employment opportunities. She soon came to the realization that it wasn’t her true passion. Three years ago, while contemplating her next move, she started an Instagram page where she showcased her rediscovered love of painting. Initially, her followers were just friends and family, but her page grew to a level she says she never could have imagined. Kilcup’s account not only gained followers, but has been promoted by big time art accounts on the social media platform. Along with followers and increased exposure came customers interested in purchasing original works of art as well as commissions. In her own words, “it blew my expectations out of the water.” She hadn’t been actively promoting her artwork, and it turns out she didn’t need to. Kilcup took the opportunity and ran, turning her gift with paints into a business. Kilcup’s paintings focus on the natural beauty of the pacific northwest, something she attributes to her upbringing in a town where nature is an integral part of life. Landscapes with lush scenery as well as the critters that reside there are her subjects of choice. When asked why she opts to leave white space behind subjects, she stated that she appreciates the simplicity it creates. As a resident of Boise who truly loves the City of Trees, Kilcup has also put her brush to the task of recreating iconic, locally-valued landmarks such as Table Rock, the Train Depot, and the Capitol. Her appreciation of Boise is rooted not only in its beauty but in the unwritten mantra of “community over competition” that sets it apart from art scenes in bigger cities. She is thankful that Treasure Valley artists have been welcoming and supportive, offering help and guidance whenever possible. If you’d like to see her watercolor paintings in person, and have the opportunity to buy one, visit her website at www.mrskilcup.com for a list of Boise businesses that have her work on display. You can also purchase original works as well as contact her regarding commissions through the online shop. ¢ @mrs_kilcup, www.mrskilcup.com

CHANGING LIVES THROUGH EQUINE-ASSISTED THERAPY Idaho Youth Ranch Expands Near Caldwell to Double Impact

BY CAITLIN COPPLE MASINGILL PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER

Nicole’s bright, bubbly voice and wide smile can light up a room, but she’s quick to explain she wasn’t always this way. Nicole, now 22, was born addicted to meth because her mother used the drug while pregnant. Her “bio” dad was also an addict. After her mom was arrested, Nicole and her siblings were taken away and put into foster care. In the 11 years that followed, she and her siblings were in and out of 12 foster homes. She was adopted at age 11, but after an argument with her adoptive mother, she was dropped at Hays House, a youth homeless shelter in Boise operated by the Idaho Youth Ranch. She was just 12 years old. After a month at Hays House, Nicole moved to the ranch in the Magic Valley which opened more than 60 years ago, operating initially as a working ranch and home for troubled boys. Today, the Youth Ranch is building a new residential and out-patient ranch facility outside of Caldwell on a 258 -acre campus that will serve the growing needs in Idaho’s population center, the Treasure Valley. One of the largest nonprofits in Idaho, the Idaho Youth Ranch funds its services for 40

traumatized youth and their families through 25 thrift stores, individual and corporate donations, and foundation and public grants. In 2017, the Youth Ranch served 626 of Idaho’s most vulnerable children and families, providing therapy, residential treatment, job training and workshops, and adoption services in North Idaho. A hallmark program is equine-assisted psychotherapy, which Nicole says benefitted her tremendously. “When I arrived at the Youth Ranch, I didn’t know what to expect,” said Nicole. “There was a horse there I connected with a lot. I would just brush her, and it felt so calming. The first time I put her lead rope over her neck and she followed me, I started crying because I knew she loved me and wanted to be with me.” Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) uses collaborative, sensory experiences between clients, counselors, horse professional and horses themselves to promote growth and learning to achieve treatment goals, according to Cecilee Heath, LCSW, Senior Clinical Program Manager at the Idaho Youth Ranch. “We have seen great success using this model

for a variety of conditions facing Idaho youth, such as depression, anxiety, grief and loss, behavioral challenges, trauma, and navigating major life transitions,” Heath said. “The horses mirror and respond to participants body language, tone of voice, and even implicit intentions or energy. Horses are large and powerful, which naturally gives clients the opportunity to overcome their fears and to develop confidence in working with them.” Nicole credits the Youth Ranch with giving her a number of tools: respect, responsibility, work ethic, and being able to recognize her emotions and change them. Today, Nicole lives in the Treasure Valley with her nearly 2-year-old son and his father. She’s also employed full-time. CEO Jason Fry agrees that a differentiator of the Youth Ranch is the commitment of the staff and board members to “finish the job” when it comes to transforming the lives of traumatized youth. “We don’t give up on them,” Fry said. “We care deeply about their success and for many, we’re the first people who have believed in their ability to do something productive with their life.” Fry said that 96 percent of Idaho Youth Ranch graduates are currently working or in school, and 86 percent are drug and alcohol free since discharge. Fry’s goal is to double the number of kids and families served each year. The new facility in Canyon County, which is slated to open in the fall is a key part of that goal. “The need is there, and it’s our mission to be there for every kid and family who needs us,” says Fry. ¢

MODERN MIDWIFERY

A Meaningful and Empowering Relationship BY KAYLI CORBIN PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER

There are times in your life that pull from an untapped and undiscovered reservoir of strength. These times shower us in defining experiences and catalyze transformation. Arguably one of the most life-changing moments any woman can experience is the birth of a child. Imagine yourself, plump with human life and convinced that now is the time for your miracle to bless this world. Your spiritual and physical rite of passage is beginning. Who do you turn to? Building a relationship with the medical professional responsible for guiding you through the delivery of human life is integral to a positive birthing experience. Kristi Rhodes and Megan Kitterman, Certified Nurse Midwives at Idaho Stork, radiate 42

the support and kindness that is necessary for a successful birth. They boast a combined 25 years of experience in child birth, having both previously worked as Labor and Delivery Nurses. Kristi and Megan have a passion and dedication to uplifting mothers, sisters, wives, and families. All women are inherently different, and the Midwives of Idaho Stork promote their patient’s rights to make decisions about their individual birthing process. The Midwives of Idaho Stork attend births at St. Luke’s hospital in Boise. They use their knowledge of birth, calming presence, and loving support to create a peaceful birthing environment. When visiting their office, you will notice touches of personality everywhere. Decorative quilts replace cold exam paper,

décor graces the walls and elicits serenity, and countless photos display the soulful work of the Midwives of Idaho Stork. Every aspect of this practice is focused on the creation of a personalized experience, allowing your divine motherhood to flourish and radiate. The midwifery model of care is supported by a large body of evidence, founded upon many years of research. A 2016 report by the Cochrane Collaboration states that women who received midwifery care were more likely to experience a spontaneous vaginal birth, less likely to utilize an epidural, less likely to experience intervention, and had a decreased incidence of preterm birth. An editorial titled ‘Finding the Path’ beautifully states, “Giving birth is supposed to shake us right down to our roots and leave us in awe of the power of the experience – and of the power in ourselves for getting through it”. The Idaho Stork midwives believe that women and families are strengthened through positive birth experiences, and they are here to walk the journey with you. Kristi and Megan work collaboratively with Glen Lovelace, MD and owner of Idaho Stork. They believe that during pregnancy, women are best served by a MD-Midwife team. The Midwives of Idaho Stork work in tandem with Dr. Lovelace for routine prenatal ultrasounds and when complications arise during birth. This model assures you are provided with the highest quality of care possible. To find more information on their philosophy and detailed bios of the whole team, head over to www.idahostork.com. Women can find help at every step of their journey. From adolescence to menopause, Idaho Stork is here for you. ¢

BLOOMS FLOWER STUDIO The Power of Flowers

BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER

“I must have flowers, always, and always.” – Claude Monet There is nothing in this world quite like the beauty of a flower. Vibrant colors contrasting against deep greens and luscious earth—every flower is a truly a blessing and a gift, from daisies to peonies and everything in between. We would truly be remiss not to stop and smell the roses from time to time, if not every time. Julie Browne shares that deep love for flowers and has since she was a teenager. Growing up with a teacher for a mother and an entrepreneurial father, Julie learned at a young age how to be a successful business owner, and with that mindset, opened her first flower shop at the age of 20. “Looking back, I did not realize how much guts I had. And no fear.” And it does take a lot of guts to start a business, but Julie picked the industry that she knew and loved and she stuck with it. Her store, Blooms Flower Studio, is kept extremely busy with both walk-ins and event planning. With everything under the sun from weddings to first dates, funerals and graduations, Julie and her team work diligently to craft the perfect, unique assortments and bouquets for each individual’s needs. “I love making people smile and be happy. I have also learned to love to help people grieve when they have a loss in their family, and getting to know what that loved one was like. I love what the healing power of flowers gives to people,” says Julie, when asked what she loved about her job. Over the first several years, she had a hard time with funerals, but being such a large aspect 44

of her business, she grew more accustomed to that environment and found the beauty in helping people get through the trying times in their lives. Flowers truly do bring joy and happiness. It is terribly difficult not to smile, at least a little bit, when smelling a fragrant lily or appreciating the bright colors of an iris. With hundreds of thousands of different flowers across the world, it’s not easy to pick a favorite, but Julie is partial to roses herself. “It [roses] can have so many shapes and sizes. One can look like a peony, another ranuncula, and another a poppy. She finds joy in helping each client, whether they are rushing in before heading to the courthouse for their nuptials or helping organize a large party, there is always something magical about creating floral arrangements. Blooms also partners with several local businesses, such as The Chocolat Bar and Ladybug Press. Julie maintains that it is important to always shop and buy Idaho first. Whatever your floral needs, Julie and Blooms Flower Studio have you covered! Whether you’re planning an event or just simply stopping in to smell the roses, all are welcome at Blooms! ¢ Follow them on Facebook and Instagram (@BloomsFlowerStudio) to stay up-to-date on all their beautiful arrangements! 208-395-1300

PATTY COSTELLO Sharing equality and support through children’s books BY VERONICA LEMASTER PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER

“Everyone is welcome” is the main message in Patty Costello’s new children’s book, Catalina and the King’s Wall. The book, which is a lighthearted tale of a king wanting to build a wall between his kingdom and the nearby kingdom, is an interpretation of real issues seen in the United States of separation and greed. It tackles subjects such as the travel ban and building a wall using the king, his baker, and edible treats such as icing, sprinkles and cookie dough. Costello has a PhD in Neuroscience and currently works for higher education remotely 46

for Walden University. She and her husband moved to Boise from Minnesota five years ago, where she quickly got involved locally working on initiatives such as getting Medicaid expansion on the ballot, volunteering for Global Talent Idaho, and going through the extensive training needed to become a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for abused and neglected children. When asked what sparked inspiration to write a children’s book, Costello’s answer was simple: her two-year-old son. She took her son to the Women’s March in January 2017 where

the outcome from the election was still fresh. It was at the Women’s March where Costello had her son on her back in a pink on-sale snowsuit where she was worried about what message he would get. “My main concern was how people were going to treat one another, because I would hear instances of people feeling more bold about people telling others to go back to where you came from or you don’t belong here, things like that leading up to the election and after the election. People felt more empowered to do those types of things, and I was concerned what type of message my son would get,” she said. “Although he’s not of minority, I certainly didn’t want him thinking he could say things like that when he got a little older.” While asking herself what she can do to send a positive message to kids about belonging, a book came to mind. “The family [in the book] is Muslim, because it’s supposed to represent certain countries

that were not allowed to come visit the United States, which represents the travel ban,” Costello said. “But, to kids, it’s more about standing up for what you believe in and there’s no reason to build a wall, why should we separate ourselves?” While her son was her main inspiration, she made the book for all children to enjoy, especially those on the receiving end of feeling “different,” whether they’re from another country, not the predominant race, or feel different in any other way. She wanted to send a message to kids on how to treat people and show them that everyone is equal. Although she didn’t have previous experience with writing a children’s book, Catalina and the King’s Wall has had great reviews, includ-

ing one from Foreword Reviews, saying “Catalina is a lighthearted parody full of colorful confections.” You can find the book locally at Hyde and Seek in Hyde Park, at Amaru Confections who hosted her book launch party, at Rediscovered Books, and online at Amazon. com. The book can also be checked out at all local libraries. Costello’s mission with her work is to “create books that inspire children to want to change the world, one step at a time,” as seen on her website. She finds importance in the quote said by Jacqueline Woodson, “Reading = Hope x Change,” which can be seen in her future plans of publishing a nonfiction picture book biography. ¢

ENTERTAIN

PURSUIT OF PASSION Max Pham Nguyen

BY VERONICA LEMASTER PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER

You may have heard of this Boise native that toured with Ariana Grande and danced in the 2018 Super Bowl with Justin Timberlake, but little did you know, his passion wasn’t always dance. Pham graduated from Timberline High School in 2009 and went off to the College of Idaho with a scholarship in tennis. After spending two years there he changed schools and studied at Boise State University for a semester. That is when he decided to stop everything, including school, and focus on his new passion: dance. “I felt like I needed to put more time into dancing and just give it a shot,” said Pham. He started moving in 7th grade, where he would watch and mimic dance moves in music videos for fun. He began with the ending dance scene in Footloose, then 50

went on to Michael Jackson’s music videos, along with the shows So You Think You Can Dance and America’s Best Dance Crew. “Nobody told me that what I was doing was dancing. I liked it, I thought it was cool, and I knew my family didn’t really understand it so I didn’t really show them,” Pham said. “It was something that I literally fell in love with that I discovered on my own and decided to do my homework and study it.” In 2013, Pham packed his bags, said goodbye to his family, and moved to Los Angeles to focus on his dancing career. Although he was fueling his passion, he couldn’t help but face hardships such as financial stress and working overtime. Pham found himself working eight-hour shifts at Apple, then heading straight to a

dance studio to practice, then sleep and start all over again. Even with tough times, Pham would place himself in situations where he would feel inspired which helped him continue chasing his dreams. “It was a struggle, but it really wasn’t a struggle,” Pham said. “When you just enjoy the process, it’s not hard.” Luckily, he saw the hard work pay off just after his first year of moving to Los Angeles. While working at Apple, Pham landed his first gig touring with Jesse McCartney, which helped him build relationships and later give him the confidence to quit Apple, and dance full time. This led him to getting a gig dancing on Ariana Grande’s Honeymoon tour in February of 2015. He also danced on her Dangerous Woman tour last year. He had a few months of off time before Justin Timberlake’s campaign called and asked if he’d like to be a part of his tour, which included 2018’s Super Bowl. “[The Super Bowl] was the most fun process I’ve been a part of. I was dancing alongside so many of my idols and generations of Timberlake’s dancers that I look up to,” he said. “The people that I literally was watching in high school in Idaho, I was dancing alongside.” The world tour is still going on until 2019, but that hasn’t stopped Pham from starting a side project giving back to his community. He collaborated with Clay Lee, who gave him his first job teaching dance, to contribute to a heritage fund through Boise Parks and Rec. The fund will cover hip-hop, which wasn’t offered before, called the Max Pham Heritage Hip-Hop Fund. The Fund will allow youth to dance at a reduced cost, with his hopes of inspiring more children to dance.
